You are warmly invited to the Dukes Education Conference
2025. As we step into the new year, we have a wonderful opportunity to come together once again as a unified community—our family of Nurseries, Schools, Colleges, and Dukes Plus organisations.
Over the past few years, we have navigated unprecedented changes, discovering new ways to innovate in education while striving to maintain the essential human connections that bind us. On the 6th of January, we will gather to celebrate these connections, exchange ideas, and explore the evolving educational landscape.
The theme of this year’s conference, The Heart of Education, reflects our commitment to balancing innovation with the relational aspects that make education truly impactful. Throughout the day, we will hear from thought leaders and experts who are passionate about the power of education to transform lives.
This year, we recognise a key challenge across our community: the need to integrate technological and innovative teaching methods while preserving the human connections that are at the core of education. The conference provides us with a unique platform to explore this balance, ensuring that we continue to enhance learning outcomes without losing sight of the human touch.
Our four key strands for the event—Leadership, Innovation, Wellbeing, and High Performance—will guide our discussions and ensure that everyone leaves with practical insights to apply in their own contexts. We hope this day inspires each of us to continue our vital work of empowering young people to lead extraordinary lives.
This brochure outlines the speakers and sessions available throughout the day, and I encourage you to make the most of this opportunity to connect and learn, together.

The AI Classroom: Surprising Truths Every Educator Should Know
Dan Fitzpatrick
We’ll undergo more technological progress in the coming decade than we did in the preceding 100 years, signalling a global transformation. Education requires innovative solutions to prepare students for an AI-driven future. It’s vital not just to have technology but to comprehend its transformative capacity in learning. In this “The AI Classroom” keynote, Dan Fitzpatrick underscores AI’s role in education.
Heart, Hands, Heels and Help: Reconnecting Heady Education with its Biological and Social Roots
Professor Guy Claxton
Traditional education selectively disadvantages young people who are not naturally intellectual and sedentary. Cognition is designed by evolution to be warm and active, not cold and still. Eggheads are not
necessarily good at life. The ‘heart of education’ has to beat if learning is to function properly. The new science of embodiment shows clearly that moving, feeling, making, gesturing and interacting are integral aspects of intelligence. We can’t let any child be disheartened by their schoolingwhatever their grades.
Mental Health and schools: for better and for worse
Dr Tara Porter
In this talk, Dr. Tara Porter introduces the concept of mental health, exploring how thoughts, feelings, physiology, and behaviour contribute to overall well-being. The discussion then extends to mental health within a social context, examining the roles of parenting, friendships, schools, community, and society, and addressing the critical question: “Why is there a mental health crisis now?”. The focus then shifts to the education system and schools, highlighting how they can both contribute to and support mental health. Evidence from high-achieving schools in the US is drawn upon to
examine contributing factors to poor mental health. The talk concludes with a focus on helpful practices, emphasising the ‘ordinary magic’ of trusted relationships, in alignment with the theme of connection.
Pam Mundy
‘Early childhood is ... seriously and dangerously fun, and a sandbox for new ideas about evolution’ – New York Times
A human-focused, future-centric approach to learning and care in Early Childhood has never been so important as it is now. This is our chance to drive forward what has always been the ‘beating heart’ of this phase and at the same time, harnessing the ‘opportunity of community’ that Dukes affords us all - to be extraordinary leaders of Early Childhood worldwide! This session is intended to light that fire!
Jonathan Simons
A new Labour government in Westminster may bring changes to education policy, including modest curriculum and assessment reforms, teacher recruitment and retention efforts, and accountability system updates. From January 2025, VAT will be added to independent school
fees, which, although primarily affecting the state sector, will impact the independent sector due to shared job markets, exam adoption, and potential pay and pension changes. Jonathan will provide expert insights on how these changes could affect both state and independent school leaders, teachers, and governors over the next five years.
Paul
Warwick
Inspirational Leadership will examine how we give the best of ourselves to inspire and engage our schools, especially when under pressure and when facing uncertainty and doubt. Shakespeare’s play of Henry V is used as a backdrop to look at themes such as motivation and helping ourselves and others through challenging times.

The core of resilience and wellbeing resides in emotional awareness and regulation. This talk delves into the developmental aspects of emotional regulation in children, explores strategies to enhance their capacity to tolerate challenging emotions, fosters the cultivation of emotional intelligence, and examines methods to maintain composure when confronted with emotional triggers.
The independent sector post VAT: closer together, or further away
Jonathan Simons
As of August 2024, independent schools are set to be charged VAT and full business rates by January 2025. This policy introduces uncertainty for schools, school groups, and parents in managing finances and raises questions about
the independent sector’s future role in English education. Will the imposition of VAT and loss of business rates relief bring the independent sector closer to the government as a partner in addressing issues like teacher recruitment and children’s mental health? Or will it widen the gap, making schools more socially and economically exclusive? How should the sector respond, and will the approach differ between senior and prep schools? What does this mean for large groups like Dukes?
future challenges and opportunities for the children of today. How does Dukes Plus tackles these successfully?
With the dawn of AI, an employment landscape which is transforming, the concept of the 100-year life now becoming a reality for many and mental wellbeing challenges on the rise, we will discuss some of the key emerging themes facing
the young people of today. We will highlight how Dukes Plus supports and sets students up for success both in the present and future.
Over the past couple of decades, the boundaries between the real world and the digital have blurred, almost merging into one. Whereas in the past we only had to consider keeping ourselves safe from physical and mental harm, we now also need to be worried about the harm we may receive online. During this session you will learn about the growth of new cyber threats, what you can do to protect yourself online and how you can play an active role in keeping the wider Dukes family safe and secure. Jason will discuss new cyber security threats and their impact on us as users. Joe and Peter will share strategies for staying safe online and the wider Dukes cyber security strategy.

Lessons from the world’s highest performing education systems
Lucy Crehan
Lucy Crehan, an international education consultant and author, shares insights from her ethnographic study of five top-performing education systems: Finland, Japan, Singapore, Shanghai, and Canada. By living with teachers and immersing herself in classrooms, she explored the impact of system-level policies on everyday teaching. Her findings, detailed in her acclaimed book Cleverlands, which was named one of The Economist’s ‘Books of the Year,’ reveal surprising truths about these successful education systems. In this session, Lucy will discuss the core philosophy behind their success and the practical strategies that schools employ.
Professor Rose Luckin
This session will examine the vital role of AI in enhancing, not replacing, human interaction in education. Luckin will argue that AI’s true potential lies in deepening relationships between educators and students, fostering sophisticated human intelligence, and supporting wellbeing. Drawing from her research, she will present a vision where technology and human touch coexist to create personalised, engaging, and effective learning experiences. The session offers insights for educators and school leaders on navigating the evolving EdTech landscape while keeping human connection at the core of education.

Covering areas such as learning, homework, feedback and marking, you will leave this session with a range of strategies, tips and traps to avoid.
Chanel Contos will explore the concept of rape culture, highlighting how societal attitudes, media portrayals, and institutional behaviours contribute to an environment that normalises sexual violence. The presentation will discuss ways rape culture is upheld in youth (including in an online context), and ways to disrupt this. Educators play a crucial role in dismantling this culture, and this session will give tangible suggestions that can adopted to your school in order to be transformative in preventing sexual violence and promoting healthy intimacy.
In this session, Dr. Tara Porter explores the toxic environment young people face today, driven by a culture of comparison and competition. She examines how parenting and phone use impact mental health, drawing from her book Good Enough. Dr. Porter discusses how a focus on children’s achievements undermines the essence of childhood and how phone use negatively
affects body image and sexual relationships. The session concludes by emphasising that self-esteem is nurtured through connection, not achievement, and highlights the crucial role schools and teachers play in fostering this connection.
