End of Term Highlights Autumn 2022

Welcome from Dr Adrian Rainbow

Dear Parents,

I would like to thank all of you who I have met over the last few months in various parent consultations or events. Your insightful suggestions about how we can improve aspects of our provision have been invaluable to me in terms of framing my immediate action plan. Thank you.

What I have enjoyed the most, however, is getting to know you and learning more about your children. It is clear that I am entering a caring, vibrant and diverse community and, as a Canadian, I feel very much at home at ESS.

I will write to you at the beginning of the new term to outline the immediate steps I will be taking, particularly around how we plan to drive academic rigour at the school.

In the meantime, I wish you and your families a wonderful festive season and I hope that 2023 is a year full of health and happiness for all.

With best wishes, Dr Rainbow

Welcome

Dear Families,

As an incredible Autumn Term comes to a close and I write my final newsletter introduction, Christmas is certainly in the air, with snow still on the ground in Green Park from the beginning of the week and the students taking part in the annual BIG ESS Christmas Quiz!

The Autumn Term has been another productive and eventful term and there are many highlights below, so please do take time to enjoy reading them during those quieter festive moments. I am incredibly grateful to staff who have worked endlessly to ensure our students are given the best possible education and care. The school would not be the special place it is without our dedicated staff.

A personal yearly highlight of mine is meeting with our new Year 7’s over breaktime hot chocolate in my office and this year was no exception! I am always in awe at their creative ideas and ability to communicate so confidently at the start of their secondary education. It’s been a pleasure to get to know them and I wish them all the very best for the remainder of the year and beyond at Eaton Square.

In my previous newsletter I spoke about the opening of our brand new Sixth Form at nearby 79 Eccleston Square and it has continued to flourish as the term has progressed. The students have particularly enjoyed the Speaker Series, joining in a Business Enterprise Competition and visiting SOAS (School of Oriental and African Studies) to take part in a series of lectures and workshops on Asian sub-cultures. Next term will see the launch of the EPQ (Extended Project Qualification) and a number of fascinating trips and speakers are already in the diary.

As I sign off, I must reiterate the thanks I gave in my end of term letter, to you, our parents, for being a wonderful parent community to work with. I have thoroughly enjoyed my four and a half years as Head of Eaton Square Senior School and leave content with the progress that has been made and the plans that are in place for the future. I know Head elect, Dr Adrian Rainbow, will continue to build on the strong foundations that are in place. I wish him the very best as he takes on his new role.

I hope you all enjoy the festive break and manage to spend time with family and loved ones.

All the best Mrs Caroline Townshend (Head)

Maths Challenge

Academic Maths

This year the Mathematics department (for the first time) took part in a 90 minute, mutiplechoice Senior Maths Challenge.

This challenge encourages mathematical reasoning, precision of thought and fluency in using basic mathematical techniques to solve interesting problems.

We are happy to announce that two of our Year 11 students, Alan and Vladimir have obtained Silver and Bronze certificates.

Academic Geography

Y11 Human Geography - GCSE FieldTrip

On Monday 28 November, Year 11 Geography students went to the Kings Cross area to study Human Geography fieldwork and look at the challenges that exist within an urban area. We started our day in the newly re-developed and gentrified area of Granary Square/Coal Drops Yard.

Taking a service tally and using land maps to work out the main uses of land in the area, we assessed how it has changed over the last 300 years. We also conducted a survey of the building quality and the level of development, including a crime index. It was interesting to see how much the land use had changed since the 1700s.

We then walked to our point of comparison, the deprived area of the Bremerton Estate, and conducted the same surveys and tally’s to compare our results. It was really fascinating to see how within a couple hundred metres the quality of building and land use had changed so drastically.

We found that the quality of housing in Coal Drops Yard was significantly higher, with much of the land use being for offices. In contrast, building quality in the Bremerton estate was much poorer, and the public agreed.

My favourite part of the trip was undoubtably talking to members of the public, simply because we found it really interesting listening to their thoughts and opinions of the area. We really enjoyed the fieldwork day and know that it will help us in our studies for the GCSE Geography course.

Academic Science

Royal Society of Biology’s Annual BioArt Attack Competition

To coincide with Biology Week, our Year 7, 8 and (some) 9 students have been submitting their Science projects to the Royal Society of Biology’s annual BioArt Attack competition.

We have had some fabulous entries from Biology enthusiasts ranging from small scale digestive systems in the form of collages that made use of different types of fabric, candies and beads to a life size model of the popstar Justine Bieber that showcased his digestive organs. Other pieces of Biology artwork included a model of the blood depicting the different cells that make up our blood as well as representations of animal cells.

Structure of DNA

This term, our Year 9 students have had a lot of fun making the structure of DNA using sweets. It’s a useful activity for them to familiarise themselves with what DNA is and how it is pieced together.

Citizenship Week

Remembrance week (7th-11th November) is also Citizenship Week at Eaton Square School.

We set this week as a reminder of the Fundamental British Values yet also to demonstrate the various ways a Citizen can contribute to their country. Examples such as famed Suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst, who broke social conventions and expectations for a greater cause, and famed War Poet Wilfred Owen are used purposefully to show the importance of individual liberty amongst a wider society.

Students are encouraged to look and look again at the world they inhabit and to consider how they may contribute to make a better future for themselves and future generations. It is our goal to communicate an understanding from Year 7 to Sixth form that Citizenship is not a mere right, it is a responsibility.

Remembrance Day

In recognition of Remembrance Day, Mr Roberts led an assembly, to remember those that gave their lives in conflicts so that we can enjoy a free and fulfilled life today. It was a reminder to the students about the Fundamental British Values and to demonstrate the various ways a Citizen can contribute to their country.

Examples such as famed Suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst, who broke social conventions and expectations for a greater cause, and famed War Poet Wilfred Owen are used purposefully to show the importance of individual liberty amongst a wider society.

Our Year 7 student Anna brought in some beautiful poppy cupcakes which were then donated to a charitable cause.

Academic Business Studies

Year 11 students debate the consequences of Globalisation

Our Year 11 Business Studies students had an intense debate on the effects of globalisation, backed by facts citing reliable sources and also delving into how globalisation had transformed the economy, environment & sustainability, global standards of living and culture. Sam Nagammy and Marina were excellent moderators of the debate and conducted it to a high professional standard.

Both teams (for and against) demonstrated outstanding articulacy and passion for their stance on the debate. They each researched and brought forth their ideas together as a team, as a result we all came out more informed and even more conscious of the fact that as business leaders of the future, our trade relations with the world bear a direct impact on economic systems and societies.

The

Year 10 Business Studies students “add value” to products!

From market mapping to innovative business ideas, the Year 10 students got busy on how best they could add value to their products and thereby to the world around them. Their concepts were creatively impressive, financially viable and socially responsible.

The students donned their business hats to add value to a plain t-shirt and whilst this was an impromptu exercise, the output shed light on what could be a new era of business practice. It reflected the importance of sustainability, conscious consumerism, and simplicity as differentiators that could determine business survival.

winners of the debate were the team that argued against it. The winning team included Archie, Chelsea, Freddie, Ibrahim, and Salha.

Academic Drama

The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe

On Thursday 10 November, the Year 8 students attended the performance of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe at Gillian Lynee Theatre.

Step through the wardrobe into the magical kingdom of Narnia for the most mystical of adventures in a faraway land. Join Lucy, Edmund, Susan and Peter as they wave goodbye to wartime Britain and say hello to a talking Faun, an unforgettable Lion and the coldest, cruellest White Witch.

This was an exciting opportunity for students to experience and learn how theatre is created and performed.

Art Year 10 GCSE Fine Art Woodblock printing
GCSE

A-Level Art

Year 12 A-Level Fine Art

Our Year 12 students have been working on some pieces of work during their Fine Art lessons, the theme for the artwork (pictured) was “Humans and their environment.”

Students utilised a variety of different materials and mediums to create these stunning pieces.

Sports

In November, our U13’s football team enjoyed an unforgettable weekend at St Georges Park, the FA’s national football centre.

Students played six fixtures on the David Beckham pitches as part of the P4S Challenge Cup, where we had a difficult first day but bounced back on day two with some excellent team performances. The hard work eventually paid off, winning our final game of the weekend to clinch the gold medal in the P4S Plate-bowl match.

Over the course of the weekend the students also got an opportunity to try the futsal hall, play in the England team games room, and stay in the hotel used by the players. The highlight for the students was the recovery session in the hydrotherapy pools which was run by an England fitness coach and included hot and cold plunge pools, and an underwater treadmill. It was an incredible experience to live and breathe the life of an England footballer, especially so close to the World Cup.

Special mention to Lorenzo and Connor who captained the side admirably, ensuring the team conducted themselves well both on and off the pitch.

Winter Sports Day

It was a chilly but exciting afternoon at our Winter Sports Day! We were delighted to welcome parents who attended to support our students and would like to say a HUGE thank you to our Year 11 student’ Archie’s mother for the delicious treats, we thoroughly enjoyed the mulled wine on such a cold afternoon.

Year 10 Economics

Year 10 students of Economics present their views on Market Structures

and Real World Markets

With the global economy experiencing a slowdown and with inflation higher than seen in several decades, Year 10 students of Economics at ESS put together an impressive presentation on the effects of this on real-world markets.

These students went beyond their curriculum and incorporated many interesting economic applications such as the forces of supply and demand, on these markets. They discussed how markets play a fundamental role in the economy and how they form a key part of operations at financial institutions such as banks, hedge-funds and more.

The quality of the presentations and the depth of knowledge showcased by these students was truly commendable.

Sixth Form Visitor

We had the pleasure to welcome Professor Mark Bailey, Managing Director of Dukes Education, Safeguarding Governor at Eaton Square Schools and Professor of Later Medieval History at the University of East Anglia to our Sixth Form.

Professor Bailey delivered a fascinating presentation on the topic of Pandemics and the lessons that can be learned from history. The students’ knowledge was challenged on the global Pandemics and were encouraged to participate during the insightful session. Our Year 12 students were extremely engaged and shared their own thoughts and opinions in response to some of the theories that were discussed during the presentation.

A key highlight of the session was encouraging the students to compare the impacts of COVID 19 against the effects of other global diseases through history, to reframe their thoughts and opinions on the scale of this recent pandemic. This was certainly achieved and many of the students continued this discussion well after the lecture came to an end.

We would like to thank Professor Bailey for providing the students with a sneak peak of an academic lecture they can expect at university, in a couple of years’ time when they start the next phase of their education journey.

Sixth Form Visitor

We were delighted to welcome Lucy Pearson (osus@act.org ) - Senior Strategy and Development Manager at the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development (UN) to speak to the Year 12 students as part of our weekly lecture program in November.

Lucy delivered a thoughtful and fascinating talk on her natural hazard advocacy work in Nepal. Much of her work has focused on advocating the role of civil society in improving building resilience in earthquake disaster zones such as Nepal.

Lucy has experience in the international disaster risk reduction and climate adaptation field that includes working in NGOs, networks, and research institutions in the UK, Africa and the Asia-Pacific region. She openly discussed her own career journey since leaving school and gave our students valuable insights and advice about their own chosen career paths from the lessons she has learned on her own journey.

Dr MacManus, Senior Lecturer in State Crime and Acting Director of the International State Crime Initiative (ISCI) visits our Sixth Form

Last week Dr Thomas MacManus visited our Sixth Form to talk to our Year 11 and 12 students. Dr MacManus is Senior Lecturer in State Crime and Acting Director of the International State Crime Initiative (ISCI) at the School of Law at Queen Mary University London (QMUL).

As an area of his own research focus, Dr Macmanus delivered a fascinating and thoughtful talk on the 2014 Genocide in Myanmar and was well received. The material really challenged all our students and gave them a real insight and flavour of the kind of academic material they can expect at university.

We are hugely thankful for Dr Macmanus to give up his time and visit the school to highlight such an important global issue for our students.

Sixth Form DLD College Visit

Seven of our Year 12 students visited DLD College last month to take part in a business enterprise competition with students from the college as well.

In mixed teams, the students were set a variety of business-related challenges with which to come up with ideas and a business plan. This year, the focus was festivals; every year, over 40,000 tents get left at festivals, most of which go straight to landfill which is a huge waste.

The task?

To design an all-weather poncho using material from the waste tents that could be sold to festival goers throughout the UK. In teams, students had to produce a mock-up of their poncho and put together a business plan which included production costs, projected sales, and branding.

The winning team included three Eaton Square Students who designed a handbag that could be converted to a poncho! It was a fantastic, fun afternoon for all who attended and gave our students some real-world business and marketing experience.

Sixth Form Year 11 Induction

Year 11 Introduction to Sixth Form

On 24th November, we welcomed the Year 11’s to Ecclestone Square to give them a flavour of what to expect at Eaton Square Sixth Form.

Following a series of subject presentations on A levels that the school offers, the students then a had a series of talks ranging from A Level options and making informed decisions, the Extended Project Qualification and life in the sixth form. There was also a short Q and A session organised by our Year 12 students.

The second half of the morning, the focus shifted to teamwork, leadership, and collaborative learning. Split up into groups of 7, teams then had to complete an ‘Escape Room’ Box. Students were introduced to the escape boxes work and the relevant theme – in this case, it was a bank robbery! The boxes had a series of compartments, locked with a padlock. Working in small groups the students then had crack codes, work out riddles, solve puzzles and as a result gain access to the next compartment. The groups race against the clock, to reunite with information, to unravel the mystery. Classroom Escapes are an immersive learning experience that unlock communication and perseverance skills as well working collaboratively and as part of a team – all key skills needed for success in the Sixth Form. It was a unique learning experience, with lots of fun and all the teams cracked the boxes within the 2-hour time limit.

Sixth Form Visitor

Our Sixth Form Students attended the SOAS University for the RSAA (Royal Society for Asian Affairs) Sixth Form lecture Day on Asia this term. The day included presentations from speakers with broad backgrounds, lecturers from prestigious Universities and Firms, and passion-driven Entrepreneurs. All the speakers delivered very enthusiastic and academically stimulating presentations, our students were highly engaged throughout the day.

The presentations covered an extensive range of interests such as political affairs, economics, humanities, and international law. A few headliners included “The economic effects of geopolitical decisions in the Middle East” and an empowering talk on “Women’s education in Asia”. Perhaps the most eminent of the speakers was Mr. Iain Frew, the ambassador for Vietnam, who offered all the Sixth Form students that attended from various schools’ an insight into his home country and role in international politics for the UK.

Students were encouraged to participate in independent thinking and were given a chance to ask indepth questions directly to the speakers. In addition, we were given a choice between an introduction to the Arabic or Mandarin language, complementary to the university’s ethos. Overall, the day was a diverse and unique experience that allowed a glimpse into university standard education and topics that will challenge you as an academic intellectually, as well as a taste of what being a student in university and attending lectures can be like.

Thespian Society

This term a group of passionate young ESSS Thespians headed to South Bank to watch Hex, a musical adaptation of Sleeping Beauty at the National Theatre. The aerial special effects and the bright sumptuous costumes put immediately us under spell. Eclectic music and amusing choreography guided us through an original and witty version of the classic fairy tale, full of unexpected - at times darktwists, which give the audience the chance to reflect on ‘who really we are’. Magical, entertaining and thought-provoking. You may find yourself humming some tunes of the musical on your way home!

Here's what our students had to say:

Careers Week

This term our students engaged in a number of activities and interactive workshops for Careers Week. Some workshops included personality quizzes to help students recognise their own strengths and weaknesses, and subject teachers delivered Careers’ sessions during classes and form times.

During our Preparation for Life sessions students had the opportunity to learn how to articulate and apply communication skills in an interview setting, and discussions around how important eye-contact is, when communicating with individuals from diverse cultures and those that speak other languages.

Our Head of Psychology and Preparation for Life, Miss D’Auria said: “It’sbeenreallyinterestingtoseehowthestudentscanapplytheirknowledge, forexampleof differentlanguages, indiscoursearoundcommunicationskills.Studentsshared, forexample, howeyecontactneedstobeappropriatefortheaudience, becauseinsomeculturesitisperceivedasasignon confidencebutinothersitcanbeconsideredthreatening”.

InvestIN Education:

We were really pleased to welcome Willow from InVestin and Emily from the University of Essex who came in to deliver workshops during Careers Week. Willow delivered whole school assembly on careers in general, what employers are looking for and how the working landscape is changing. Willow visited again later in the week to run a session on effective communication skills in year 9 Preparation for Life.

Emily took over at the end of the week, exploring higher education choices with year 12 in Preparation for Life and demystifying some of the UCAS process.

A year 12 student said, “I hadn’t considered going to the University of Essex before, but I am seriously considering it as an option now”.

Anti-Bullying Week

During November, we celebrated Anti Bullying week raising awareness on the impact of bullying has on a school community. In registration session and assemblies we discussed and developed our understanding of the different forms of bullying both in person and online.

Years 11 to 9 had a great time debating if all forms of bullying should be legal or illegal while Year 7 also had the opportunity to take part in an Anitbullying workshop delivered by Open View Education.

Through the use of Drama they explored different ways they could resolve situations, help friends who are experiencing bullying and reach out when they need help. It was wonderful to see all involved students responded each activity with great maturity, empathy and compassion.

Theatre Trip

The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe

On Thursday 10 November, our Year 8 students were so excited to attend the The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe at the LW Theatre.

It was and magical experience and the perfect way to end this term, The students had the opportunity to experience and learn how theatre is created and performed.

Clubs

‘Core Conditioning’ Club

‘Core Conditioning improves posture, alignment and strength. Developing core muscle strength can boost the effectiveness of workouts and reduce the risk of injuries. A strong core also contributes to better balance, flexibility, cardio performance, the lifting of heavy objects and sporting performance in a specialist field.’

Year 10 and Year 11 Boys have worked hard whilst attending this fun but intense lunchtime club to develop their core strength. Over the course of the term they have learnt some core exercises and built on strengthening these muscles on a weekly basis. Well done boys – terrific effort!

Sixth Form Christmas Lunch

We were thrilled to see Dr Adrian Rainbow join us for a delightful Christmas lunch at our Sixth Form.

Dr Rainbow spent the afternoon with our Sixth Form students' and staff, we all thoroughly enjoyed tucking into a delicious traditional Christmas lunch including classic Turkey with all the trimmings, brie and cranberry baguettes, pigs in blankets.....and not to forget the Christmas tree brownies!

Christmas Celebrations

A couple of weeks ago we welcomed some of our students’ parents to the School, to help with decorating this stunning tree. Thank you so much to the AMAZING parents for helping, it was a fantastic evening and the tree looked just perfect. It was so great to see our School community coming together and getting into the festive spirits.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas...
