1. By the age of 8 years old, children will have spent on average 1 year of 24 hour days on recreational media
Welcome
2. 16-24 year olds spend more time on social media and communications than sleeping Negative impacts can include sleep disorders, diabetes type 2, negative impact on body image and self-esteem and disorders such as gaming disorder. So, please do speak with your children about this if they are already stuck to their screen and try and encourage them to see friends in person and stay busy with activities and exercise!
Congratulations again to our Year 11 cohort for completing their GCSE’s. We look forward to celebrating with them on GCSE results day. In the meantime, I wish everyone within our school community a wonderful break.
All the best Mrs Caroline Townshend (Head)
In my final assembly to students last week, I emphasised the need for rest. Students need time to wind down and recover from what has been a very busy term. The temptation is always to book lots of plans but please ensure your children have time to sleep, to switch off and to reflect on the year. Sleep featured prominently in my assembly as I decided to talk to students about the dangers of screen time and points for them to consider over the summer break.
A significant number of global health organisations are concerned about the negative effects of screen time on adolescent health with reports from the NHS, Public Health England and the World Health Organisation (WHO). Many of these reports were published pre-COVID with leading figures agreeing that the current situation is undoubtedly worse.
The summer holidays are upon us! Well done to all students, staff and parents, and thank you for another brilliant year. The Summer Term is the first term since Autumn 2019 which has not been significantly impacted by COVID and how we have all enjoyed it! As you can see from the term’s highlights below, so many wonderful events, trip and activities have taken place over the last few months. I very much hope this is a sign of full return to normal as we plan for a great year next year.
There were two facts that I shared which led to gasps within the sea of students:
Dear Families
Last term the Mathematics department held their first fundraising event. The department raised a small fund of £145.49. The house with the most raised funds picked two teachers to be on their teams. It was very exciting to see the students and teachers working together in teams to compete against other houses. All funds raised were donated to Teenage Cancer.
This year 5 students from each year 7 and 8 took part in the Junior Maths Challenge. We obtained 8 out 10 certificates. Well done to all students, especially Misha and Daniel for qualifying for the next round.
Gold: Daniel Song and Misha Prokopenya Silver: Alkakhkhar Kaliyev and Victor Timchenko Bronze: Ramida Schiller, James Lao, Valentino Corbett-Englaro, Alexander Tyukhtin

Academic Science
Our Year 7 students have thoroughly enjoyed learning about all the plants that rely on bees to reproduce. Perfect topic for this season!
Science Experiment - Dissecting Tulips
They also studied various flowers that need to be pollinated by bees before they can make a seed in the absence of crop plants, the students dissected tulips to separate the different parts of the flower and to learn about the function of the different structures.
They have been learning about all the fruits and vegetables that are pollinated by honey bees, such as broccoli, apples and almonds.

Computer Science
Over the summer term, Year 9 students have been learning how to make their own websites using HTML and CSS. The students learned in a practical way how to: format and align text, create headings, insert and resize images, add hyperlinks and tables, etc. They also learned how to use Cascading Style Sheets to style their webpages and add animations and other decorative features.
IT Skills
The students learned a range of image editing skills, such as image manipulation and image editing, free-form drawing, transcoding between different image file formats, and more specialised tasks. Examples of image manipulation activities completed by the students are: creating a Graffiti Effect, creating transparent text effect, turning a picture into a watercolour, selective colouring in GIMP, adding falling snow to a photo, turning photo into sketch and much more.
Academic ScienceComputer
During the Summer term, both Year 7 and Year 8 students have been introduced to image editing using GIMP, an open-source graphics editor used for image manipulation.

On 14th June, the Year 10 GCSE Drama students participated in a three-hour devising workshop led by Cordelia Stevenson from Splendid Productions.
Drama Workshop - Splendid Productions Academic GCSE Drama
The workshop stimulated the student's creativity, providing a starting point for devising. They were shown how to be obvious, positive, and inventive. It also supported their examined coursework which requires the students to work in groups to devise a piece of theatre.

We are thrilled to announce the launch of the Eaton Square Thespian Society which is their performance skills and knowledge outside of the classroom. 20 students attended the Wyndham Theatre to watch the five-time Olivier award-winning play Life of Pi. After a cargo ship sinks in the middle of the vast Pacific Ocean, a sixteen year-old boy named Pi is stranded on a lifeboat with four other survivors - a hyena, a zebra, an orangutan, and a Royal Bengal tiger. Time is against them, nature is harsh, who will Basedsurvive?on one of the most extraordinary and best-loved works of fiction – Life of Pi is the smash hit adaptation of an epic journey of endurance and hope. Students will have the opportunity to join the student committee, attend West End musicals/plays, participate in workshops led by theatre companies, engage in career presentations delivered by professional artists, and much more.

Comments from students and teachers: “I loved the puppetry; I think the movement of the animals was so realistic and majestic! The scene where Pi tames the tiger was very intense and thrilling!”
- Natalia Noskova “I thoroughly loved the whole performance, but especially loved the change between intense and peaceful music because it also replicated how the audience was feeling at that time.” - Adam Rauf
- Miss Sotiropoulou “I loved the creativity of the stage and how in the scene where he tames the tiger, he jumps into the stage through a little trapdoor style opening as if he was swimming in the water.”
- Gabriel Da Silva “I loved the movement and body language of the animals; I also found the rapid change of scenes unique and mind-blowing.”

Sports
Eaton Square Prep School Sports Day!
Our Year 9 Sports’ Leaders have done a fantastic job in helping and supporting our Prep School with Sports Day. The sports day took place just before half term at the Millennium Arena, Battersea Park, and it was a glorious day for our junior students.
Ela, Jose Maria, Aleyna, Youmna, Eduardo and Gerard (featured in the photo) were responsible for the coaching and officiating different athletics events, and all did a fantastic Atjob!the start of this term, five of our extremely talented students attended Westminster School for the Ultimate Frisbee Tournament. We had three mixed teams competing at U13 level, and despite a very high level of competition, they managed to secure two wins and three draws. A HUGE well done to all the students that participated, each team did brilliantly and our students are certainly looking forward to the next event.

It was the first of four indoor sessions before we visit Dukes Meadows for a full outdoor round at the end of term. Golf Society
Ice Hockey Tournament
During Half Term, Connor Welsh from Year 7 played for the England Ice Hockey Team up in Dumfries, Scotland. What an incredible achievement, we are so proud of Connor!
Comment from Connor: "In the first weekend of June, I played for the England Under 13 Ice Hockey Team in Dumfries, Scotland. This was a great finish to the Ice Hockey Calendar which saw me play for the England selection tournament in May, where I was awarded the most valuable player. My club team, the Haringey Hounds who play at Alexandra Palace were placed 3rd in the National Championships in Sheffield.
Following our Golf Society Launch students thoroughly enjoyed our very first Eaton Square Golf Club this week at the famous Knightsbridge Golf EstablishedSchool. in 1951, it's seen as one of the top Golf Schools in Europe, with an impressive selection of former students including Sean Connery, Hugh Grant, Colin Firth and Geri Halliwell.

The next morning, we finished up with the Jacobs ladder and some archery, which was a perfect end to the trip. All students thoroughly enjoyed themselves and were in high spirits.
CampPGL
Our students had a marvellous time at the PGL Camp last term and were eased into proceedings with some afternoon splash games, some blindfolded trail walks, and an evening campfire. Things became significantly more adventurous, with students enjoying some high line trapezing, and raft building in the on-site lakes. Then in the afternoon we were tunnelling in the forest, taking part in some fencing, and finished the evening with a capture the flag competition.

To get to the BFI our class took one of the most beautiful routes: through Green Park, down the Mall to Trafalgar Square (where we discussed whether the statue was of Napoleon or Nelson!), then over the bridge and to the institution. We watched 3 short films in the Target Language with different plots and outcomes.Someofthe Spanish students (Varya Latysh, Emma Pederzolli, Flora Wadsworth, Jacob Tembo) worked together to describe their experience in Spanish to continue Lapractising!semana
TRANSLATION: Last week, we went on a school trip to BFI. It was very interesting because the films were emotional. We learnt about the difference between short and feature films in Spanish and new vocabulary. The short films were the best. We loved “Cocodrilo” and “Uno”, but we didn’t like the film “The spirit of the beehive” because it was extremely boring and it made no sense. In conclusion, everything went well and we had a great time as we behaved really well. We would recommend this experience.

The French students (Emmett Hoffman, Elizabeth Hoffman and Otto Myers) said: Many large schools from across in London came with big groups of students compared to us four. We all loved taking the day out to learn about French film.Thegoal of the trip was to explore culture and identity in French films, completed by 3 short films before lunch and one film after. The first of the three was about Madagascar, second about immigrant culture in France, and lastly a short film about a girl exploring trans identity. The films were very informational and a pack to assist the interactive learning was also provided. The last film, “Intouchable”, showed a hilarious story we all enjoyed. Overall our trip to the BFI was an immersive experience, full of education, entertainment and fun. The excellent films put on display helped us better understand this amazing culture. The peak would arguably be the movie Intouchable. Driss and Philippe’s story brought a hilarious, heart-breaking and heart-warming crescendo to a fun day. Now we look back on the day with laughs, partly at the audience, and how cool it was for us to have such a fun and educational experience.

• Year 7s were inspired by Michael Craig Martin and produced some beautiful acrylic paintings featuring personal symbols
• Year 8s created a range of mixed media artwork inspired by Cubist
It was fantastic to welcome families and staff to our ‘Night of MADness’ on Wednesday 29 June, showcasing work from music, art and drama throughout the entire building.
• Another Year 8 group had a lot of fun working with plasticine stop motions on screen
• Our GCSE students worked on mixed media compositions, some of the mediums used were acrylic painting and print making
We had vibrant and stunning art work displays produced by all year groups:
• Year 9 students were perspective inspired whilst exploring composition

Drinks and delicious canapes were available to all visitors, located on the ground floor, followed by musical performances in our main stateroom Adams. The chamber choir set the tone with contrasting pieces they have been working on all year, followed by talented soloists playing everything from AC DC to jazz to Beethoven. The y7, 8 and 9 rock bands provided a rebellious and raucous end to the music before it was time to head to the drama studio and top up the drinks.
We were treated to a wide range of dramatic styles including moving monologues from our talented GCSE students and a witty retelling of the familiar tale of Rapunzel, by the drama club. The turn out was amazing and we would like to say a HUGE thanks to all those who came along. It was wonderful to be able to showcase the talent and hard work of the students in such a large face to face event again and we can’t wait for the next one!

Just Like Us
Just Like Us are an LGBT+ charity who work with schools to change attitudes towards diversity and support young people across the UK, making schools a safer, happier and more welcoming place for all young people. Volunteers who work with the organisation came to speak to all year groups at the start of the Summer Term, sharing their experiences growing up LGBT+ and the importance of allyship in schools.
The young volunteers, all who had very recently left school themselves, were able to connect with the students in an age-appropriate way. They broke down stereotypes and explained the key concepts and terms relating to their community, whilst sharing positive and diverse representations. Our students were hugely engaged, asking many questions on a wide variety of topics, we were lucky that our guests were happy to run over their allocated time but even then eventually we had to stop the session before the enthusiasm had finished.

EAL Trip We concluded this academic year with the EAL Cultural Awareness trip, taking our students on an afternoon tea bus tour around London, designed to enable them to take part in the research and planning stages, building on individual input and teamwork. Throughout the summer term, students were involved in the organisation of the trip while developing their presentation and communication skills, designing tourist guides and fun activities, writing formal emails and reviews. On the day of the trip, students enjoyed various elements of the British culture and familiarised themselves with significant London landmarks. They were particularly excited to taste the delicacies of a traditional afternoon tea and to spot and capture well known monuments and famous buildings in the city centre.

The summer term has been a busy one for the Learning Enrichment department with various exciting events. One of the highlights has been the celebration of International Week with assemblies delivered by teachers and students, form activities regarding language and culture and of course International breakfast which entailed food sharing among students from all parts of the world! Karak chai and pad thai were rightfully the most enjoyed elements of the morning. Cultural Awareness Week

On 10 May, an educational company called Elevate Education facilitated a workshop to the Year 10 students about study skills.

Study WorkshopSkills
Comment from Student: “Last Thursday we had a visit from Elevate Education. Our speaker, Jai, discussed with us effective ways of revising for our exams. He spoke about methods such as using examiners comments as well as mark schemes to complete past papers. I found the tip to use google Sholar to gather ideas for essays particularly useful. Overall the whole year group really enjoyed the session and found it very helpful as our end of year exams approach.” Khush Malde
• Utilising the syllabus to frame study
The workshop is called Study Sensei and explores:
• Conceptual learning to develop deep understanding
• Utilising practice exam papers
• Structuring and reviewing organised notes
• Standing out through independent learning
Over 700 senior schools across the UK have already chosen Elevate Education to run their study skills programmes for one key reason: each programme actually works! Elevate’s study skills workshops and seminars are designed to achieve behavioural change amongst students. It isn’t enough that students simply understand what they need to do in their study: the challenge in any study skills programme is getting students to use and apply the skills they learn. Elevate gets students using the skills from its seminars and workshops by using an integrated process that works.

Year 11 Study Leave Began
It was a delight to share our last lunch together as a year group, especially given that the students were able to design their ideal lunch menu. We do hope they enjoyed their survival kits and the personalised notes of support from their teachers.

It only feels like yesterday when we welcomed the students back to Eaton Square on Thursday 9 September 2021 for their final year of Secondary School and now, they have just finished their GCSE examinations. We couldn’t be prouder!

It was fantastic to welcome back parents and we hope you all enjoyed a brilliant day of exciting events. With points available for all finishing positions, in every event, there was a great deal of healthy competition, especially in the teachers race and tug of war event.
Once the dust had settled, and the scores calculated, it was time to announce the winning house Browne secured the House Athletics Shield for the second year running but it wasn’t enough to secure the grand prize. A HUGE congratulations to Hypatia who won by just 19 house points! A reminder that every point throughout the year counts.
We rounded off the end of this term perfectly, as we all attended our 2022 Sports Day at the Millennium Arena in Battersea Park and it was truly a glorious day!
Well done to all our students, staff and parents that participated and got involved!

AwarenessDrug Visit
At the start of last term we had a visit from Paul Hannaford who spoke to our Year 9 and 10 students about the dangers of addiction, drugs and alcohol as well as involvement in gangs, knife crime and county lines. Paul offers workshops and talks to all year groups ranging from year 4 up to sixth form, tailoring the message appropriate to their ages. Through his own experiences as a former addict of over 20 years, Paul conveys an incredibly powerful and hard-hitting message. Travelling extensively throughout the UK, visiting primary and secondary schools, youth centres, young offenders.

Craft Club Our school counsellor ran a Preparation for life session on Non-Violent Communication (NVC) which is a specific social skills process which teaches pupils to resolve conflict in a peaceful way through empathic listening and honest expressing of feelings. It teaches us to understand and express our feelings and to hear our own deeper needs and the needs of others. The four steps in NVC are Observation, Feelings, Needs, and Requests.
The students were taught about these stages, and they were then provided with different conflict scenarios and they spent time in pairs role-playing resolving these conflicts using NVC. We then discussed the benefits and effectiveness of this conflict resolution communication process and a few pairs demonstrated their role-play to the class.

It has been wonderful to see the return of trips, both residential and day, in addition to weekly house assemblies and cross-year group events and competitions. There have been so many amazing highlights throughout the year that we shared with everyone as we collectively celebrated the progress and achievements of our students in all areas of school Annually, life.September
We ended this term with a super celebration as we all attended our Annual Prize Giving Ceremony, held at the well-known Chelsea Old Town Hall, located on the famous King’s Road. It was fantastic to finally be together again in person after two years of online Theceremonies.afternoon
brings a sense of newness and excitement in schools and we very much look forward to the opening of our Sixth Form in Eccleston Square as the final phase of opening Eaton Square Schools to offer education from ages 11-18. Many of our Year 11 students joined as new Year 7’s in 2017, and it is great to see so many of them continuing as pioneers of our Sixth Form under the leadership of our Head of Sixth Form, Mr Nick Lee. We also took the opportunity to thank our whole staff community for their tireless work to provide our students with the support, encouragement and opportunities to thrive.
