WELCOME TO THE FAMILY

Aatif Hassan, Founder and Chairman
I know that for some of you, news that you are joining us can be a bit daunting. The unknown always is. However, I’d like to reassure you that, in becoming part of Dukes, you have joined a organisation that is led by the right values. I left the world of finance for a reason: I went through some extremely challenging experiences in my life that reinforced for me that there’s more to the world than making money. I wanted to do something that filled me with a sense of purpose. A reason to get up day in, day out and work tirelessly because I felt inspired.
And the thing that fills me with that purpose? Seeing my children - all our children - learn, soak up the wonder in the world; see the extraordinary.
That is what I’m here to make happen with Dukes, and I chose your school because I saw it happening there too.
I really look forward to meeting you and getting to learn and understand what is unique and special about your school in more depth. Through willing, positivity, and having the experience of our pupils unwaveringly at the forefront of our hearts and minds, I believe this new union will be the start of something really special.
What wil Dukes bring?
Purposeful leadership and exceptional people.
It’s people first at Dukes, starting with our pupils; ecompassing our parents, and celebrating our staff. We look for people who put their heart into what they do, and then help them to lead.
Strategic focus, extra funding, and a growth mindset.
Being part of a wider family means more stability and security. In turn, this makes room for being more ambitious, and doing new and exciting things.
Team & peer-to-peer training.
Ultimately, great education is simple: quality teachers, spending quality time with students. We are working hard to make Dukes the best place for staff training & development anywhere in the sector, so our teachers can do what they’re best at, better.
Shared resources
From US universities or digital marketing, to setting up a summer school, there is a wealth of niche expertise within Dukes that we can share to deepen the experience of our students.

Welcome to Dukes. In this guide, we give you a brief introduction to Dukes – who we are, why we do what we do, and how we work together.

A quick tour of Dukes: the why, what, and how.
What is Dukes? 2
WHAT IS
An Extraordinary Family
The formula for the best education has been the same for thousands of years: quality teachers spending quality time with students. At Dukes, we are firm believers that nurturing closer relationships between people is the best way to help bring these learning experiences about and enable the education community to thrive.
Dukes is more than a collection of excellent individuals. We are a community of peopleeducators, parents, and young learners - who connect in closer ways to raise the bar for all.
Being part of Dukes means belonging to a family that is there for the long run. We strive together and we celebrate together. It’s a community for sharing and growth. And for those who share our purpose and our values, it’s a home, where extraordinary things can happen.
Our Purpose
Our Values
We lead with heart
We are for: Placing the highest value on people. We are against: Putting results before people.
We’re a team
We are for: Once you’re part of the set, you’re set for good.
We are against: Isolation.
We love learning
We are for: Joy in learning at every stage of life. We are against: Education as a means to an end.
To inspire and empower our children to live an extraordinary life 1 2 3 4
We do it well
We are for: Expecting the best from everyone and for everyone in the family.
We are against: The ordinary.

DUKES?
Individuals in a family are not all the same. Each of our member organisations has its own, unique take on how to deliver outstanding teaching and learning. Each has its own brand, ethos, history, its own special place in the community.
We love this and we want to keep it this way.
But there is also commonality. For us to work together well, there must be a common thread that weaves through the whole organisation, drawing us together, connecting us, making us strong.
At Dukes, our shared purpose and values form our common thread.
We choose every new school very deliberately. Though each may have a different approach, in every one, these principles are embedded at the core.
Our Structure
Dukes has brought together a curated selection of exceptional schools and nurseries.
Around them, a collection of further offerings beyond the classroom offer our students the very best opportunities for developing their talents and pursuing their ambitions. As a family, we want to be with our pupils the whole way through their journey, as they ready themselves to take their next steps in life.
WHAT
DUKES? 12

The Dukes Offering
“No one can be an expert in everything, but with such talent across Dukes, our collective expertise is something really special.”
Richard Fletcher, Director of Performance
Our Strategy 2025
Across the group we are making great strides towards excellence in our five strategic priorities.
Doing it well
So how will we measure whether it’s working?
Pupil numbers
How many are coming to us? How many are staying? For how long?
Are our parents and pupils reporting that they are happy? Happiness
Educational outcomes
Are our academic programmes delivering?
Staff retention & satisfaction
Do people love working with us?
Compliance
Are we upholding rigorous standards of care?
Financial stability
Are we looking healthy enough to ensure we can provide quality education for our children in the coming years?

24 WORKING TOGETHER
When a new organisation becomes part of Dukes, we interact in three ways.
Most aspects of our organisations are run autonomously at the local level. We then have some elements that are kept consistent, and some which are managed centrally.
eg: Teaching & Learning
Local Marketing & Brand Curriculum
Locally-led
By ensuring most activity and decision making is led at the local level, we enable the leadership and the staff on the ground to react quickly to the needs of their communities.
eg: Safeguarding Software Health & Safety Approaches to inclusion
By making some processes and systems consistent throughout Dukes, we reduce the overall costs, allowing further investment into individual schools, and improve communication throughout the family.
eg: Compliance & Statutory Policies
Autonomous Consistent Centralised Kept the same
Budgets, Payroll, Insurance Finance Accounting
Centrally-led
Moving some processes to centralised manangement frees up administrative pressure on our organisations, enabling the focus to be on the pupil experience as much as possible.

WORKING TOGETHER
26
Our Leadership Framework
Board of Governance
Each school has its own Board of Governance chaired by our Founder, Aatif, with at least one further Lead Governor (Managing Director & Dukes Board member) and an independent governor. Each Beyond the Classroom (BTC) organisation has an equivalent review led by Dr Glenn Hawkins. These meetings take place termly and are the engine room for all decisions. They feed into the ExComm meetings.
ExComm
1 2 3
These are strategic meetings attended by the Head of each organisation, grouped together in their divisions (Boarding Colleges, Outside of London Schools, London and Cambridge Schools and BTC). These meetings allow for collaboration and greater sharing.
Board of Directors
The five ExComms form the basis of reporting to the Dukes Board of Directors, who also meet formally every term, plus an additional annual strategic review.
How We Govern
Our sense of purpose shows us where we’re going, and our values remind us the way in which we want to go about running the family. Alongside these, we have four key non-negotiables that direct how we govern:
28 WORKING TOGETHER
Long-term thinking Investment in people Local management & flat structure Staying pupil-focused
“We’re not remotely interested in quick gains at the expense of long-term growth. If we’re doing our job right, our children will be with us for years, so long-term thinking is everything.”

Sustainability
Sustainable development is about meeting the needs of the current population without negatively affecting future generations accessing what they need.
It includes addressing pressing matters such as the climate emergency, biodiversity loss, marine pollution, unemployment, and inequality. The lower the priority society places on addressing these matters, the greater both the compounded effect on the inability of the environment to continue to provide services that support life and the cost implication of righting affect we are having on future generations.
Education has a pivotal role in enabling a mindset that:
Truly understands the interconnectivity between human society and the negative impacts it creates on the environment through pollution and over consumption, and societal progress through lack of education, inequality and exploitation
Innovates and takes action to put right negative impacts and enhance the capability of the environment and human society
How is Dukes implementing sustainability?
GOVERNANCE
Dukes is passionate about sustainability; it is a key aspect of our value to lead from the heart, and it will be a golden thread across the group. We have implemented a new quarterly reporting process so the Board has greater oversight of sustainability performance.
A new policy has been adopted which commits us to achieving Net Zero ahead of 2050 and adopting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) by incorporating them into our plans.
After our colleges successfully achieving Planet Mark Certification in 2022, we have set ourselves a challenging target of achieving Planet Mark Certification across all of our settings by the end of 2023.
32
WORKING TOGETHER
OPERATIONS
Our case studies are examples of our sustainability work in 2022 and showcase the breadth and depth of the sustainability agenda.
OUR COLLEGES
During 2022, our five colleges all achieved Planet Mark certification.
They also took part in Dukes Sustainable Career Weeks which raises awareness of the types of jobs that are included in the growing field of sustainability. In addition to hearing from industry experts in aftercollege lectures, 54 of them attended The Engineering Design Institute and built scooters out of waste paper, which they then test drove.
OUR NURSERIES
Many people feel that nursery aged children are too young to understand about the natural world, but at Miss Daisy’s that is exactly what they learn about as the curriculum is designed to include lessons on all of the United Nations Sustainable Development goals from inequality and intergenerational learning to pollution. The children are Ambassadors and have their say on what is important and what different topics mean to them.
Both Miss Daisy’s and Eaton House Nursery have a focus on waste and recycling and zero food waste.
At Eaton House Nursery, the children even shout out ‘zero waste’ if they finish all their food as a way of celebrating their achievement.
SUSTAINABILITY CURRICULUM AND SANCTON WOOD
Many of our nurseries, schools and colleges include sustainability in curriculum to create awareness of the challenges we face, like waste and recycling, inequality, food waste, air pollution and energy efficiency.
At Sancton Wood, the curriculum is citizen-based and includes human rights, wellness, diversity, equity, work-life balance, empowerment and the value of community engagement, philanthropy and volunteerism. Following an application for solar photovoltaics, the children are also experiencing the application process from start to installation.
