Thanks for takfng the tf~ out during your busy mailing to ~fte - hope you've recovered by now from it and can take a bft of a breather for awhile. B1g mai11ngs can certainly be s&ressful! Hope too that by now you've gotten a secretary - even though you spell f1ne. hch issue of the OPH gets bet't er and fs always so interesting! ~

continuing busy - f1nished up the last class in dulcimer play1ng techniques for this semester last wee~ - we all had a lot of fUn and learned a lot. They learn how to plav and

[ learn how to ca..tJnfcate better. Besides. the p.ay helps. of course. We all had a laugh about how you can't put your dulcimer down once you get • chance to sit down and start

playing!

when are you gonna make supper?M

I reply. MIn. minute. soon

And before you know it II half hour goes by!

My family is pretty

patient ",1th me though and have been a big encouragement to continue. Oh, lIlY husband a I just conpleted one of Here, Inc's kits as barter for some ~rk done on ~ old car - put the strings on Frid'Y and it sounded beautiful - came out real nice looking, too - sure hated to deliver ft. Thought you'd get a kick out of my -fan Nil¡ - I recefved an envelope of thank you notes ff"Oft'l the 4th & 5th graders I played for in October. Jr1y boss had let me off an hour to do the program and I told them I'd love to stay longer, but If I stlYed too long I might get ffred - hence the -hope your boss didn't ffre you~! (Please excuse my errors today!) I '. continuing -.y ~rk on the Modes and will be sending you N.terh l later on similar to the lydian Hode. Takes a lot of time and thought to get it clear enough in .ind to illustrate and explain logically on paper. Anyone who likes traditional folk music should k~ about them. , think, but "ve seen so lfttle on the why's .nd wherefores. "ve got one of tnose .inds that fsn't satisfied ~fth just knowing how to do somethfng _ , ~nt to know why, too - ft's hard to be self-taught. but there's a lot of satisfaction fn learning SOMething thoroughly from scratch. too. About the Pig Nose Amp and the Marcus-Berry pickup - , use then both. The Pfg Hose amp does have a funny-lookfng ~tal projection on the front that looks 1fke a pfg's nose! I've used ft fn locations where there was no electrfcal sourc.e - 1fke Crafts shows, etc. The Ntt.erfes provide enough power - not super-loud, but enough so that the fnnedhte audience can enjoy the soft sounds of the dulcfmer wfthout being deafened efther. 'use a neck IItke. whfch hangs fn 11ttle metal frame stn.lftg on a lace that fastens around the neck. Wfth ft, , can be heard even when movfng about a bft - J get a terrible crfck fn Iqy neck tryfng to stay close enough to a stationary mfke - and' don 't 1fke being "tied" to one either. The pickUp is very very small and fnconspfcuous and pfcks up beaut1fullyft ought to - it's not cheap - that' s where thfs summer's teaching money ~nt! So, plug .ike and pfckup fnto a .fxer, plug into the 8Inplff1er and there you are _ electri'fied!

I have a picture somewhere of a QroUD of school children Derformfnq together - they're tauqht from chi l dhood how to olav them . .. ff t ~ver find it again will send it. The Mountain Dulcimer Section TH E DULCIMORE ....... Dear Ph1l t r i p to

Be~a,

More again on old dulcimers.

Kent.ucky.

My _1t'e and :I recently made a Which 1.n conjunction w1tb Berea Co118se has become

a center :for t.he preeervat.lon and promotion or the Appalach1an cu1 t~ . The area 18 r1.ch in dul,.c1.mer lore and playera, and well worth the v1s1t. f'or any du1cimerph11e.

ESpBcially not.able 1& the col1ect.lon of ant.1que dulcimers (hammered and plucked) 1n the Museum of' Appalach1a 10 Berea. Many or t.he better known 01dtimers are represented, including W1ll Singlet.on , Ed Thomas , and Jethro

Amburgy. &s well as &omB leeser- known but t.alented b~lder8. The collectlon was assembled by John Jacob Niles . In ssvera1 10catlons in the town, the work. of' more recent dul.clmer bu1lders may be aaen - Bome truly t:1.ne instrument.s are for sale. Other pe1nte of' interest. in Berea are t.he "Log House" where excellent. crai'"ts by Berea College st.udent.s and other craf't.Sm&n are sold. including du101.mers, and The Berea Co llege Library where a n1ce Ledf'ord instrument. is on display, as wel l as an ant1que sche1t.holdt- shaped dulc~er. For t.hose "'ho have read Chet Hines I dul.c1mer book and m1.gh.t be th1.nk.1ng or seek1ng out. t.he Renfro Valley dul.c1mers, an update 1s 1n order . John La1r . owner of' the 1nst.ruments, held an auot1on last. summer and the d\ll..c1.mers have been dispersed to rar conters. flenf'ro Valley 1s a rew m11es south of Berea, and rema1..ne a center of Appalach1an mus1c. On the play~ s1de or things I've recent.1y added at.rap buttons to my dulc1.mer . St.and-up players (Al d 'ossche & Bob Force, for example) have used t.hese ror some t1me. but. i t can be ad8ft.ed to t.he a1t.t..1ng players needs by running the strap under the knees . It s eepec1al1y useful ror qu1.ck passages played 1n a chord1ng style and el1.m1nates the rear of' sending your du.l.c1mer fly1ng on a s11de. YOU'd be amazed at how much cleaner you can play when you can keep pressure on t.he fretboard w1thout worry1Jlg about the instrument sh1f't.1ng . . • I'm enJoying D.P.N. great.ly - t.hanks ror a good publ1cat1on . Doug Murray 1013 North 5th Ave. Apt C Rome, Georg1s }O161 . . . . .Dear .Phil - Congratulations on a trul.y..1"1ne publ1.cat1on . I 1earned about. 1t. f'rom Kat.e Luke, who pushes DPN at. every opportun1t.y . She's an excellent. maker and player . and well liked .1n the T1dewat.er area of Virginia. I've been making dul.c1mers for about. 6 years now, and have been doing 1.t. :rull t.1.me f'or t.he past year or so - which adds up to about. 250 1.nst.ruments . Many of' these go out. of' the area. and I woul.d ~1.ke t.o request inf'ormatlon about t.eachers . You've been publishing a short list. of t.eachers. but. I suggest. a concert.ed effort to "'ork up a card :rile 1n your office which cou1d be a re so urce l.n exchange for a S.A.S.E. My spec1al need r1.ght. noW is for an elementary (beginners) t.eacher in t.he Mchmond, Va . area. Perhaps a ment.1on l.n D . P.N. could get. a name & phone number for my customer. Your readers may be 1nt.erest.ed t.o know t.hat Old Dominion Un1vers1t.y in Norfolk, Va. has had a non-credit. course in making and playing t.he plucked du1c1mer for a couple of years. and has Just st.arted a make & pl.ay course for the hammered du1c1mer. Bot.h these courses use k1ts. regul.ar classrooms. and do the Job va ry quickly. • • Dulc1mers are popular 1.n t.he Tidewater (which inoludes NorfOlk. Portsmouth. Va. Beach and Chesapeake , mostly). Rambl1n' Conrads Gu1t.ar Shop and Folklore Cent.er sells k1t.s. f1n1shed 1nstruments and provides lessons. I'm the main dulc imer teacher there. and aleo give .tn-home lessons • • • Thanks for a great. publ1cat1on. --- George Hendr1ckson DulCimers, P.O. The comb1nation oC dulcimer and piano. both electr1c and acoustic. 1. something to bear to believe; It.'a Colk and yet up-to-date and modern wlthout being commerclally detrimental to the record It_lt'.. Both Rlck and Lorraine lAe have a love of thelr mus1c . whlch can e be seen 1.n thelr own wrltten sone,s; Astronomer, Broken Toya, Pear 'l'ree (wrlt.ten ror son on.. vo both wlth one another and wlth banJo , dulc1me r, and p lano Ions l.aced throue)lout t.hla dellghtful rec ord . When dId you become

A

In 1958 vhen Jaok nl10tt caate to lihgl.and wit.h the songB or Woody Gut.hrie , he waa t.he st.art.ing point Cor many people over here . Prevloua1y there had been a skIrr'}.e Cr&18 and guitare were atrummed but. Jack Ell10t "'aa the Clrat to play properly in a 1'o1k 8t.y1e and to 8~ good Bonga .

Q

How inTo1ved were you with the gultar?

.A.

For the f1rat. year or 80 I used to spend every spare m1nute Playing and at. one at.age even came home f"rom work at lW\cht.l.me to pract1se t'or 15 minut.ea ~ :io' rom 1965- 1969 I t.aught. guItar at. t.he Engliah Folk Dance and Song Societ.y 1n London. I hardly ever pl.ay t.he guit.a r now, partly due t.o a lack: or tIme but mainly becauae I relat.e IDOre t.o the dulcimer and get. more enjoyment. 1'rom It.. In many "'aye t.he du1clmer 1s a more creative instrument ae with the guItar It has vIrtually all been done before whIle the du1clmer haa a largely Wlexplored potentIal.

Q

DId you play 1n folk groups ?

A

Yea. I was part or a trio called ' The ~agent' in 1970 with tvo rr1ends. we played traditional Ehg11sh eonga w1th du1cimer. guItar and flute . Arter nlne month a we split up 8S they wanted to get a professlonal e1ectrlc band together and I wanted to rema1n an amat.e ur Beouet.1e du1c1mer Player.

Q

Hov d.1d you come across the dulclmer?

A

A:t t.he 1968 he1e 1"olk Festival vhen I saw 11. first played by a vls1t ~ American whom I only recently d1scovered was Tom Kruakal - a good rriend of Jean ~t.chie . Lat.er In London I contact.ed F ran k Bond who made me the f1rst or what vas to be five dulcimers and a dUlspinet . He Is actually the only person 1n Britian who specIa11ses 1n mak~ du1cI mere, conaequent.ly t.hey have t.he best t.one and are beautU'u11y respon sive to play. As I came more addIct.ed t. o t.he dulcimer 1t made me aware of t he whole area of modal mus1c rang1ng from trad1tiona1 EnglIsh songB to East.ern music and that of t.he Y.dIeval snd early renaIssance perIod .

Q

What influences d1d you have?

A

Du1clmerwi&e, Jean Rit.chie and Howie Hlt.chell. I wrot.e Howle and we later exchanged t.apes . He g.ave me a great deal of encouragement. and I rat.e h 1m as t.he most. i~nov at.lve player. Other influences come from many sources lnClud ing harpsichord mus ic. Irish p1pe and harp mus1c and even IndIan sltar technIques "'h1ch make extensive use or the right hand to get. a whole range or notes and decorat.lona .

Q

You also seem Interested ln Ellzabethan Music?

A

Yes, very much, the lut.e repert olre partlcul.arly contains some beautl fUl senslt.1ve muslc ,.,hich adapts well to t.he dUlcImer . besides which they are very good t.unes. In Elizabet.han England t.here were ::Iany "'1re strung 1nst~enta auch as the cittern, pandora and orpharlon whIch sound s1milar t.o the dUlc 1mer.

Q.

Ia t.he du1c1.mer popular in England?

A

Yea. on the folk acene there 1s a groW ing number ot make rs and players . Many peop1e have gott.en to know of the dulc1mer through It. being pl ayed 1n electrIc groups auch as St.eeleye Span and l"airport Convention , others perhaps buy one because It looks att.ract.1ve (on the ...:all?) and becauee t.he y are all indivIdual und hand made. They then d1scover t hat t.he bas1c playing style 1 s easy t.o do and brines them qulck resul ts - unfortunately becauee or t.h Is t he du1clmer 1s of~n ~~de r rated ,.,hen 1t. act.ua11y haa great pot.entla1. Another drawback 1s that many t olk &1ng_ ers who play the dulcimer use it. as a second or e ven third Inst.rument. , BO t~ and. their audIences neve r Set. to know Its ful'" possib1l it.1es. •

l H7 Roger Nicholson Although rrom dlrrerent ou1tur8a the Appalachian dulcimer and 1nd~an aitar have several common features which make comparison 1ntere8t~6. The moat. obviouB o r theBe 1s the drone aspeot, which can also be heard on other ancient and rolk derived 1nstruments such as hurdy-gurdy and bagpipes. In India the drone 18 associated with the basic pu1S8 or l1fe ltselr - the heartbeat. The sitar 18 1n many ways a Bcaled up du1clmer, i t generally baa 81gh1.••n

drones (cal led ohlkarl atr1ngs and also used for rythmlc emphasis) and the remainder are tuned to the individual not8s or the chosen raga and vibrate 1n sympathy when a correapond1ng note 1& struck on any or the other str1ngs. The comb1ned er:fect 1s hypnotic and has aptly been described as 'a r1llgree 10 sound'.

A pert'ormance or Indian mus1c includes the t8.Dlboura. which looks 1ike a sma1l aitar but on1y has Cour strings. These are tuned to the tonic and dom1oant notes oC the raga and plucked out or time creatlng a cont1nioUB baokground drone against which the melody is outl1oed. Indian mythology states that the melodic Corm or the diatonic 8ca1e derived Crom the calls or animals and birds. i.e. the peacock's cry ran6BB one ootave and forms the toniC, the bull produces the second, the goat the third, the crene the fourth the cuckoo the rifth, the horse the sixth and the elephant the seventh.

The du1cimer and sitar cannot norma11y

chan~

key unless the strings

are re-pitohed, they are designed to play purely moda1 music based on various

sequences or sharp, flat and natural notes. Neither 10strument has a set concert p itch, the sitar is traditionally tuned between C an d D and the pitch se1eoted will usually be retained by the player all his llCe, this is because tbe Indian musician is trained to hear the smallest intervale oC Bound wbich can on1y be pert'ected through repetit.ion or t.he not.es at a constant. pitch .. On. a practical level perhaps a change or key would involve re-t.Wling all eight.en strings plus those oC the tamboura and t.he heads or t.he tabla drums_ a long and dlrrlcu1t Job in • hot climate on instrument.s ritted with wooden Criction pegs. The dulcimer haa two or three strin~s used as drones against which the .-lody 1s played on one or two others. These are pitched according to the players vo1.ce or the string tensio,n and sound pref'ered , and most people seem to tune to D when using banjo strings but each dulcimer has a particular key and mode in which 11.. responds best . The dul.cimer f'ami1y or f'ret.ted instruments together with the sltar and its close relative the vina are the only stringed instruments having a :flngerboard runnlng the entire length or the body. A dulcimer f'ingerboa.rd is orten hollow and acts 8S a second soundchamber whi le t.he Sitar has a concave fingerboard, so t.hat the strings may be pul1 ed sideways across t.he rrets to produce the dist1nctive slurs (meads) and micro -t.ones. Both have gapped Cretting scales for playing 10 modes rather than keys. Indlan music consists of aeventy-t.wo parent scales (melas) with dlrf'erent ascendlng ~nd descending sequences, t.hese are obtained not only by re-~uning the strings but sometimes by moving one or two rrets whlch are tie.d on with gut f'or that purpose. Th. dulcimer has f'1.xed :frets flun.k int.o the Cingerboard and t o change the mode only the melody string need be re-tuned .. The modes used 1n traditional and medieval mUSic can be traced back to ant1qu1ty when their basic principles were established. or this Yehudi Manuhin haa said, ItI am convinced that if we went 1'ar enough back lnto history we should Cind all. or most, of the strande of Western music originating 1n Ind1a, ror we know that the Ancient Greeks em pl oyed more t.han the two modes or scales in use today, and we know th at in Greek, Gypsy a nd Arkbic music we hear modes not. used 1n t.he West.ern tradlt.lon.
