Dear Phil, . .. It vas 1ntereating to see how BIIny people wrote in about tret.: I must, hovever, disagree with Glen Branham when he say. that "the degree of pitch error that the equal temperament sc:a.le produces ia not objectionable. ' Maybe for very progressive style. vith lots of bizarre c:hords, but the continuous elrone of noter- style playing tend.l to throw eac:h interval. into "higher reUef" and the ear beCOllles IIIOre diser1m1nating. For whatever reason, when I play noter- style on IfI3 (equal tempered) dulcimer, the very sharp thirds a.nd .l1ghUy flat titth. are IIIOSt annoying. I am not alone in this - Boria Boriaort, a gentlellllln of great IlUdc:al sense who hal played instTUlllents in equal t_perlllllellt, _an tone, and just intonation systems for 67 years. is a voc:iferous c:ritic of equal temperament and a chluztplon 01 pJre tUJl.ine; . I have yet to meet a serious harpsic:hordbt that felt equal te~rament vaa a really aatisfactory compromise for hiS/her in.trument . (It _s not until the adoption of the piano with ita jumbled timbre that equal teaperament beClUlle the flOral) . The advantage of equal teaperament, the abiUty to play in every key, is ...... ted on the dulCimer, which due to its diaconic fret. c:an onl,y play in a fev keys anyway . I feel that the solutions advocated by IlUslcologbts veraed onl,y in Western concert mudc: are not alway. beat tor folit music , and that dulc:icDer f't-ett1n6 1. j\nlt .uch OJ. caee in point . The Dulcimer ShoP!?! Kft The Dulci.er Shoppe (Dr.wer E, Haunt.in View, Ark.ns.s 72560) h.s a single 4-strlng kit, selling for S36 plus postage, which shares ~st COMPOnent parts wfth its ~el K-SW pre-assembled dulct ..!!,. The face, bAck •• nd sides are 3-ply walnut-veneered I 11111 na te. The aaterials are of high quality, all parts 'r'e precisely pre-cut, including the heart-shaped soond hQles in the traditional hourglass configuration, Ind the sides Ir'e already bent. The fretboard Includes I ~ fret, Ind Grover tuning pegs are supplied, as well IS lynn McSpadden's Four' Twenty Instruction Dook. The kit Includes a four-Plge assembly Instruction sheet and two I15s_ly braces that are discarded after glull'l9 the sides to the back. As with any dulcf~r-.. klng project, froM a kit or otherwise, clamping the face and back to the sides to assure tight. Invisible, strong glue joints will probably be the MOst challenging problf!ll to the novice. IlIJIrovislng with a few large C-clamps or even bricks on boards .fght work fine If you have them, M ~ approach was to trace the dulcl~r outline on a very flat piece of S/8 M plywood. and to install ~M X 20 X 4 stove bolts with thu-bscrews at two-inch Intervals just outside the tracing. Using wood discs ~de with an electric drill hole saw, these bolts beca.e the clamps (~ch like violin-makers' clamps) for the various gluing operations, aided Intermittently by two large C-clamps. To ~ke the fretboard perfectly straight, as well as to obtain other flat, square sanded surfaces, I had a 15 MpiKe of 2~ X 3" fir planed flat on one Z" edge by a loe.l .f11work shop, and stapled a strip of sandpaper tightly al"1)t.lnd It. This WIS a very sfllple and yet IICst effective Ind useful tool. Finally, a third assembly brace was IIIde to size, patterned after the two In the kit, to hold the sides at the hourglass Mwaist" -- the two supplied case shed for use In the wider sections of the dulciMer body, And I found this thIrd brace Indispensable. The fretboard was hollow, but there was no corresponding opening In the face, so , decided to cut three 3/4· X 6· slots, froN 2· above the upper sound holes to 2· below the lower sound holes, with 2 one-Inch bridges between holes. Everything fit together well; no wood-cutting Is required (unless you cut slots under the fret~rd IS I did). The dulciller WIS finished with enough COltS of OErr spray lacquer to fill the wood grain, sanding between coats and using 0000 steel wool on the last coat. The kft dulcimer came out very close to the pre-assembled Model N-8W In appearance, with Invisible glue joints and a SMOOth sheen. The laminate edges of a lighter wood give In effect of purfling which looks nice. Total elapsed ti.e was one week since I kept clamps In place overnight on each gluing operation. The Dulcimer Sheppe kit dulciMer is a pleasing. orthodox shape not unlike the early Thomas dulcimers -- thin, narrow, somewhat delicate-looking, with a sweet but quiet sound. (With the holloltt fretboard, "II not sure the slots I ~de affected either the tone or the volume.) Some experience with woodworking and a collectton of basic hand tools and clamps would be assets to constructing this or any other dulcimer. The only improvements , would suggest for this kit Ire. third asse.bly brice and additional assembly Instructions which offer $ugge5tlons and det.1l5 for clamping the long glue Joints. I do not hesitate to rKOII!Iend this kit to anyone. Woody Padgett

A RW ICID ON THE BtoeP;
A Review of: " Belilt Loved tly1an1il Arraoged tor the Appalachian Dulcimer- by Mark & Carol Blair SUbdtted by: Fred Montague Several 8OI'Ittt. ago I rec1eved a notice t'rotII ~ieationlil Pre" about theiI' rort~~ liIeries on the Appalachian and hlUDered dulc_rlil. When I "'"w " ha_ r ed dulcimer" my eyes lit up and ~ heart IiIkipped a beat, but ala. a. I read on I learned that the tirst book va. to be yet another tor the Appalachian dulcimer . I really don ' t think that the last word (or note) has been written on or about the -.:nmtaln dulc1mer, but letl be honest , little *,re than the tlrat word (or note) hal been written tor the ha.mered dulcime r. Without ~ bookliat I ' d gue.a there are between 20-25 lIIOuntain dulci_r boo.... compared to the 3 or ao tor the baaDered dulcwr. I proIlptly <laabed ott a note to the I»bllsher. which in eSience nid "ve need anothe r dulc1mer book 11.ke they need anov in Siberia - .0 get crsckina: on the ba_r dulcimer booka". I sot a reply which in enence aaid, "ours will not be like othera , we have a 2nd generatiQn ot book. oo.1ng out". Being the cur1ou1il devil that 1_, I plaeed 1IIY order. My copies have arrived and arter lookina the book over I ' ll ahare lIlY thoughtiS with )'Ou. SO you will under.tand ~ review, i t will be baaed on two pointa: 1. Like _ny dulcimer players, I can ' t read . . alc - but would 11ke to. 2 . The p,lbllsher calls this a ~ generation so let. look at it that vay.
Just a quick gl.ance will ahow that "Beat Loved Hymns" ill truly ot the ~ generation but certainly not the rIr.t child. Like all children though this one hn ctw.racter traits peculiar to ihelr. Aa stattld in the early j:8gea. no tillle fa apent on auch things 11.1 tuning. UIOdal scalel, introduction to the iDJItrUllent, etc. But one thing that i, mentioned, and rarely tound in other book., ill' two examples ot string guage and the range of key. that can be achieved with them . BRAVO~:':' There are a tew errorl in the text on sase 9 &. 11 but before the 2nd. dratt ot this review was written, I'd recieved a correction .heet rro. the editor. The major criticllilm that I have (thia ia becauae ot 1IIY lack ot knowledge ot mUlilic notation) II The 'ection that I wilh IIIOre bad been done wIth is the one on "fincering ot c.bords" . I tor one would like to see ",.cone do .ome .terlal that would take the .. dulcUler player f'I"OII staple Chord to IIIOre colllplex onel aOO arrange the lOngS in such a way that the chorda would be added in alii the player progre .. edj abo to explain why certain finger' are used and how by ualng them )'OU can get to the next chord euier. WhUe on the aubject, I would like t.o have had the chorda Uliled !dentUie-'. There are 25 h:ymnl included in the book, many of which I grew up with and thia helped me to get atarted. Thole that I played .ounded really good, although I stumbled thru thell the tint tiDe around. It should oot be very difficult to .ster _ny ot the tune. and that ' . a plealilant lurpr1ae~' On the \/'hole, "Beat Loved l\ymn." 1a a good book, and colllp&red to other dulcimer boo .... it is better than IIIOst. It haa atte..pted to break out of the uliIUIll I*ttern, -.de a few lIliatakea in the proce .. , and. when :you look at it overall you juat know i t h. . a place: in every dulcimer playera library. COIIIIIUDie:e.tions Pre .. has ao.e truly exciting booka on tap tor ua dulcimer people too.
