A D. P. N. DULCD<IER KIT REVIEW At> promised, we are slowly bringing to the O. P. N. pages some review. of the various dulc:1!IIer kits available around the country , This issue vU.l f eature the dulcimer ldt available from Green River Dulcimers of Elkhor n . Kentucky.

To begin with , this dulcimer is pretty easy to put together because of the tact that the s ides are flu-eady bent (hourglass shape ) and the loWldboard 111 glued onto them (Boundholes are cut also - hearts) . Another big plus vitb tbb Idt is that the f'retboard already haa all. the slots cut and ready to r eceive the floet vire. The head s t ock 18 also already pNl-shaped and dr1ll.ed to r eceive the grover friction pegs which come vith the instrument. After thia inatruaaent is together an easy task with the great instruction sheet that COllIeS with it - only a 1D1n1m1.m o f sanding and f1nishlna I s required. The kit I bu1lt va. all made o f walnut which was in solid pieces except t or the toP. sides , and bottom which was an i nter esting (and. very tonaly pleasing) lJuzd.nate consisting of so11d. layers of walnut whi ch wer e thin. 11ght, and. very flexible . On August 15. 1975 approximately 100 people gathered on 'the Washington Coast to explore modes and dulcimene. Your instrument was your admissio n to if weekend of yoursel f. This was the beglnnmg of a concept for an annual kindred gathering that each year moved to a d,f· ferent setting. The second was held at 8500 feet in the Northeast Colorado Rockies and the third wilt be held in Northern Californ ia. Th is is " The Pacific Rim Kindred Gathering". The artists on this album have been and will be hosts to many gatherings to come .

There has never been a dulcimer album with the scope and intri· cacy of this project. Included are 19 songs; traditional Swedish, Irish , English . French ·Canad ian and American songs, a medieval parade, original tunes by the artists. and one all-out dulcimer rock song . If you are at all interested in dulcimer, you undoubt edly have spent time with at least one of the books written by these dulcimer masters, or even one of their dulcimers. NOTES ON A PERSOJiAL COLIECTION OF DULCIMERS AND DULCIMER- TYPE INSTRIJ.IE1fI'S by Mitzie Collins, Rochester, N. Y. When I first heard a

dulcimer,played by Howie Mitchell at the Fox 1968 ~ I was seized with an overwhelming i=pulse to own and play such an ins trument . I really had no other plan than to be able to au that kind of happy and compeillng mu s i c . Some yean later, I fi nd I not only I118ke IllUlic on t he ha.aJlered dulciJ:ler, but I &lso have been s tricken by the "disease~ of collecting dulcimers and r elated instruments fo r no other reason than sheer fas cination.

My first humered du.lebler vas pu-chased in t he Slllllller of 1970 troc Dennh Oorcgi of Brocton, Hew York. He had Just lIIIlde a lIIOuntain dulc1l!ler f o r lie , and when I asked hi= i t he would build lie a he_r ed dulcble r, he agreed "ying he had restored and r epaired leveral tor historical hoae l and societiel , but hadn ' t yet actually made one rr~ acratch. I becue the proud p:laeS50 r of Dorogi Ha!!mered Dulcimer 11 . Dorog! lIlOd.eled the instrumet\t after an old dulciJ:ler he had bought in a local antique and junk shop. Even though Chautauqua County, where Brocton is located, va. the h~ ot several nineteenth centur y dulcimer builder., Oorogi belleves tnts dulcimer was trom We s tern MiChigan and dates from the last halt ot the nineteent h century. My dulcimer hal tvelve treble courses ot f our .trings each, and eleven bas a courses ot two stri ngs each. This instrument has a particularly brilliant sound, due in part to the fa ct that it i s not braced internally as heavily al IDIlny dulcime r s . o r, a s Dennil has told me, as t he later ones he has built. I have never found the twelve bass strings to be very USef ul; this I118Y have something t o do wit h ~ playing style a nd the gu'ge of the vire o This dulci~r has UIIlple pin block. , 1oIIo!nut aides , and a apruce sound board. The r osettf'S in the round lOund hole. are very intricate and are copies of those of the old~r inst r~ nt. Trapezoid in . hape, the dulcimer hal a bottom lengt h of l07cIII , a top lengtt. of 53 (:111 . a widt h o r 39 OIl, and a depth o r 8 CII . I tune it like this:

I can play with ease in the keys of 0, C, and C I118jor and e, . , and b lIIinor. That I cannot play in the key of A Ie v~ry annoying when I &III playil18 wit h fiddler s . The hall'lllers I most enjoy udng arf' mait' fOr bent wiI10v and are purchased fro= Ralph Ca=pbell of ~nnington, West Virginia. I first lav them uled by Russell Fluha r ty and I find they give a very clear ~ound an.:! ar~ ('a::<,)' to handle (For thi l dulcimer see pi cture Nl .

The Deeond duldltler I acquired is actually called a psalte ry. It .... s IIlIlde by Michael Autorino o r Montgomery. New York, and is a copy of t he antique nin ... teentl. 路 century psaltery owned by the late Bob Beers. There are fourteen courses of tt,rep str ings that cr ol' the three treble br idges , and eleven courses of two st rings eac! vhl'ch uo .. the two ban bridges . The treble cour se is tuned clJ'omaticaUy and tI,P ball courle i . tuned IIIOre or l~ss diatonically. This 1s the tuning scheme : CONTINUED
