It vaa with deepest regret that I learned th1l SUDlDer o f the de&th of JilllllY Cooper, the great SootUsh ha.aDer dul.ciller player, on June 24th of thil year . Sadie Cooper, JiD!y ' s widow, wrote to me s ayine that "He was ill tor quite a while, but he was a great pretender and tried to hide it t"roaI me •.. hia chest va ll bad and we didn ' t get anywhere las t year IllUch at all". Jim:I!y va s from the town of Coatbridge , near Glasgow, but retired vith Sadie in Dorlet , in the soutlnrelt at England. He tirst started playing the dulcimer in hia teeDS:

"I vas thrown in a t the deep end; i t vas over 50 years ago, ve all le&rnt troa another. Arter the t'irst var there vas no jobl and no do le (ve lfar e), 80 we took up bUlld.ng (str eet. IllUsic ). It. vas illegal on t.he ..un st.reet , but not in the baek rows : one day ve got ehased ott, we vere playing outlide the pollce ltattOD ... another time I val sit.ting outside a big tel'l8.lllent block with IQ' _te , a WOIIIIlD vent to throw us s~ IIIODeY and ahe knocked a tl.ower pot down on -.y eate ' s hear - I ' ll not target the.t ~" ODe

And there 'll be little torgetting Jimmy Cooper , e i t.her. His exuberant perlonality and impeccable 1II,Isicianllhip took the Brithh folk scene by sto rm, born witnellS to be a triullphant appearance at the Royal Albert Hail in 1976 . Hia albulll, ~Y COOPER, DULClMER PlAYER, va s dubbed the "d.et"initive hallllller dulcimer record" by MELODY MAKER magat.ine. But for me and the .ul,Y others who got. to know JimQy peraonally and played IllUsic with hta t'l"OIII t1llle to t1llle, it is an even IIIOre glorious lIIe1110ry and 1egacy he leaves behind. His IllUdc bad a spirit and breadth t.hat. was not.hing short at contagious . He loved to teach what he knev and vas patient, but. exacting . His style on tbe dulcimer was as unique all vas hil repetoire (see DPN SUDlDer 1978 - Vol. 4, No . 3 - tor lIlY thoughtl on hill playing) and he opened up for generations ot dulcimer enthuliasts t.o COlD!! a whole DeW apectrwa of DIsic for the instrl1lllent. Surely no one has known the total COIIIIIIIlnd. of the inatrument that Ju.,y exhibited. So, the old dulcimer nav lies s ilent.. But Jimmy Cooper's allie, thankfully, 11 preacrved for us all to enjoy tor IIIBny years to «Jme. His first slbum 11 J1HoIY COOP!R , DULCIMER PLAmR (spoot Recordll rrs 3(09) . lie appears on the latest Boys at the tough albwa, GOOD FRIll'IDS • .• GOOD MUSIC (Philo 1(51). He also 11 featured on an Ashley Hutchings production entiUed KICKING UP THE SAWDUST. Sadie Cooper told !Ill! in a letter that he had a new albulll released IIhortly after he died , but I think it 1II&Y haVl! been the Hutc:hingl recording. Each example at JiaIDy ' s dulc1aler playing 11 l ure to thrill any music lover and tnspin: any avid hanserer, al:! it did (and Itill doea) IDe. But. m::t thoughtll were best exprelled by FIlu1 Van Arsdale, the great halrmer dulcimer player troa Buffalo, upon learning of J~ ' a passing: POh. no! ..• hc reall1 vas the greatest of all ... "

Dear Maddie: We yere very interested to read Keith Young ' s reviey in the Autumn, 1978 DPN or the 43rd Old Fiddlers C<lnvention at Galax, Virginia. In it, he gives a li st of the dulcimer contest winners and mentions that Shar on Shelbourne frOlll Colonial Heights , Virginia had placed by playing a song called ''Mountain Sky". I u wonde ring if this is the same "Mountain Sky" I ,"ote and recorded in IllY album OLD TRADITIONS several years ago. (Ed. Note: YeS, it i s.) If so , it ' s not only a very flattering compliment that someone is hearing and playing lIlY music, but a great thrill that it has been used yith some success in a contest . I feel any composer would feel the same, to find compositions getting some public acceptance . .u the "Mountain Sky" Sharon Shelbourne played h, indeed, my song, I'd like to express my gratitude and thanks to her for using it. In case some of your readers ~ght be interest.ed, here is s copy of "Mountain Sky" for you to share . Jean SchiUing P.O. Box 8 Cosby, Tennessee
