If my ...·ortls stop in mid-se ntence. you' lI know somethi ng e lse spectacular just happened. As IllOSt of you know. we've been ...·orking with a ncw printer for the last four issllCS. We've also e~pcrienced delays as ...·c try to lit into their busy schedule . I' ve gotten copy to them earlltr than with previous printers , but DPNs have been going out to 5ubscribel"5later, For example . copy for the Ju ly DPN 10111$ sent to the printer toward the end of May. 11w:: magazines we~ shipped to us from Michiganon July 12th. live weeks later. and arrived he~ at ~ p.m. on July 19th. As to mai li ng . you can sec that it took a week ror thdr sh ipment to ~ach me . I began my vigil for the summer DPNson Mooday July 16th and rart'Jy mo,"Cd from the: fron t door an:a . I thought if ...t controlled the mailing , }"Qlld recc,,'e your DPN sooner. I don 't like lurking by the front door ror days. A~ a side note , you should have been he~ for the: long-awaited arrival. !he ~kaging (or lack of same) doesn't matter much. Poople woo ha,'e jllS! heard your music don't usually care what the package looks like as long as you an: on it. Therefore, ca5seHC packaging docsn't have 10 be so fancy, Note, IIowever, thDt if you an: ioini to use the cassene as a demo for bookings, you are ~k in the fOllrcolor world. Howe,'cr. color seps for somethingcasscnc-sizcd are much less expensive (about 575-5100). Printing costs are likewise reduced and. although we ha· ven't gOllen to this yct. C!lSsellCS can be ordered in batches of 100. while LPs are usually in 300-1000 copy 10tL.less monty up front here. too. So. you can package and relea.se a cassette very inelpensively compared With an LP. And, you can sell it for the same price as an LP. Bul. you ask, didn't I say thaI stores don't do we ll wilh cassettes? Thi s is 3 parado~. Mort than half the recordings sold in this country lafol year were cas· selles. In the folk "'"OI"ld. howe"cr, lhat figure is more like 5'i>. or i(,Si. Rceord ston:s don't sell many fol k music cas· sene!. and neithcr do folk music di stributors. Manufacturing both nrords and cassettes. ofcour.;c. implies an even ireatCT in\,estment in packaging. printing and inwntory. Since pcrfOlTllCrs nped labels to co,'er these oos.ts. twO th ings follow: I) some anists can't find labels for their music. since even small indie labels doo' t believe they can sell enough to make it worthwhile ; and 2) labels need to ke..-p more of !he income 10 cover their costs, Here we come to the great DIvision of Money question. If you make a cassette recording and n::lease it. you spe nd whatel'cr it costs to do the recording. but after that you probably spcnd "ery little. Cassettes only cost about 5 1.25 each in quantity. and If yoo are buying 100 and selltng them each at 57.00 each to get the money to buy the next 100. yOll make a nice return on YOUf moncy. If your rc<:ording costs were 5250. this works well. You spe nd allOlher S250 for your fil1il ba!(h of cassenes. sell them. use pari o( the proct:eds to buy the ne~t 100, and you an' on the golden rood to happiness. But if you have se,·tTlllthoosand dollars tied op In the n::c. ortIing. you probably can't m~~e enough to pay pay back the inilial IIlveSl/Tll.'nt be· cause you can't sell enougll C3l-SCUes off the Slage. so you must either seck out a label to release the recording as an LP or take a loss. II's good to elaminc these

possibilities before beginning the adl'enlure , Okay. so you don' t release it )·ourselr. You take your tape to ont: of the indies and (praise Elvis) they wanl to n:lease il. No,,' what? The label will do seveml lhlllgs. They will share to some extent in the investment costs • put some of their own money into manufacturing and promotional costs. and sometimes even into the recording (if you are famous or ,hey are rich). They will help get yOUT record into StOTts. into areas of the country you don', get to yourself. and. however fleetingly and with however low wattage . onto the radio. Although they an:: only human . just like you, lhey can do !hesc things which you will find very diffICult by yourself. They also get some of the money. which is how !hey slay in business. How much? Well, the stOTt se lls the LP forS7 .00. They btJy it for 55.00 from a distributor who btJys il from the indie for about 53 .SO. The irldie pays manufacturing and copyright cmts (about 51.50) and there's about 52.50 left. Of that they 'lI gi,'e yOll SOto 75 cents. depending upon the copynght situa· tion. and keep !he rest . It's not home free fO!" them. however. since they have their own o verhead. as well as promoIion and inventory costs to pay. Mornl: don't quit your day Job. How do you make more of the money? Buy YOllr records from the label and sell off the stage . You can usually buy the ~Ibums from lhe label at a fairly low COSt (53.00. or so), and sell them for the same 57 .00. Without co nsidcring royalties. you've now made S4.00 on each of those sales (not as moch as you would have made if no label was involl·W. but you're really on ly paying about SOcents for each label's investment. and you IIope to make thecash up on royalties and lIave the other benefits be gravy). What other benefits? The first tncenti"e to choose a label is the money made on sales the artist woolll 001 make O1herwlsc--Boston. LA. Lon· dOll or even Chico. A second lneentive is promotion: the possibility that radio play and reviews in other ",ies will allow your touring to Spread out profitably from your home an::a. Most successful ortlSts make much more from touring than from record sales. so it's worth sacri ficing some record profits to incn::ase your touring potential. A third incentive is the company-it's nice sometimes to know that someone thinks
