Dear Readers there. That need might be small ("That song is a favorite and I enj oyed hearing it tonighl.") o r large (" ['ve always wanted

f you ever see Peter, Paul, a nd Mary, wou ld you give the m a message for me? They changed my life-and I wa nt to thank them. They won't remember me. I was o ne grinnin g face in a concert crowd and it was a bit more than thirty years ago! But I'll neve r forge t th a t life -
I
changing moment.
Friends had asked me to go to a concert by PP& M at the Carter Baron Amphitheater in Washington, DC. I saw a nd heard, for the first time, a performance where th e audience was an integral part of the concert . The audience sang wellloved cho ruses prompted and enco uraged by PP&M, and I fe lt the magic in the air. My frie nds had d iffic ulty pulling me away (cou ldn 't we sing all night?) . Soon after, I bought a guitar a nd began finge r-hurt ing practice; a bit later I began playing the guitar (t he five chords I knew) and singing at an old inn for tips and dinner. After that, I left my job as a school teacher for a life as a performer. The rest, as they say, is history. Well, th ose thirty years we re filled with nervo us moments,
new instruments (mountain and hammered du lcimers), nervous moments, Dulcimer Players NelVs, wonderfu l new frie nds, experiences beyond my dreams-and nervo us mome nts. All of th is began with PP&M; [ was an audience member whose life cha nged tha t evening. With the recent terrorist acti vities all of our lives have changed as we continue to expe ri e nce sorrow a nd loss. But wit hin hours of th e shocking September events [ heard men and women singing songs of hope and dedication as they gathered th roug hout the U nited States and in othcr countr ies. I heard the melodies and words; th ese peop le gave me courage through th eir music. Many years ago I was told that whenever yo u perform (formally or informally) at least o ne listener needs to be
yo u play."). Just knowing yo u're pa rt of something is enough. To those of yo u who experi e nce th e sha kes whcn playing your du lcimer for eve n a sma ll gathering of fr iends, I hope you'll consider this: most of us will not be sough t after for a leading du lci mer player role on a hit television series. All of LI S, however, have touched people's lives and eve n nicely changed them more limes th an we'd imagin e.
I sing with the hamme red dulc imer. [ d idn 't think of doing so unt il Sa m Rizzelta asked me to sing "Angels We Have Heard On High" while he a nd his wife, Carri e, played the dulcimer and Seth Austen played gui tar at a Kentucky Music Weekend performance. I was noored with the expe rience of
singing along with this beautiFu l, sustaining instrumenl. Within days I was experimen ting wi th the sa me song and, agai n, th e rest is history. I've told Sam how he cha nged my dulcimer li fe that weeke nd. The people who brought th e ir voices to the streets in September don't know they touched my heart wit h hope. [ wo uld lovc to tell them. Peter, Paul, and Mary don't know know what they started in my li fe. If [ were n't so shy I'd probab ly te ll th em. But I'm not too shy to te ll you. Share yo ur music whenever and however you can-now mo re than ever. The st rength and beauty of music is alive and can heal, bri ng hope, inspire, a nd change lives. We need music's gift, and it comes th rough you.

Dear DPN: I was pleased to see the article I wrote, " Recipe For A Dulcime r Fest iva l," in the Nove mber 200 1 DPN. T ha nk yo u for the opportunity to write. The o nly issue I have with it is th at my name was spelled wrong o n the art icle and in the table of contents. It was spelled ri ght o n the little bio a t the e nd of the article though .

Dear DPN: I am new to playing the hammered dulcimer, although I have loved the instrum ent for years and have many
recordings by various dulcimer artists. I've con nected wit h Maddie MacNeil for instruction, but I still felt I should be "getti ng it" faster. That is why I found the Nove mber-Jan uary issue of DPN particularly comforting. I opened it to read Maddi e's declaration that she is still learning the instrument. Then I turned to Linda Lowe Thompson's discussion of all of the aspects of learning a tune using the ears, eyes, hands, and brain . This resonated so well with my experience that I began to believe that maybe I was on the right track after all. Her description of having to re-Iearn songs repeatedly precisely pinpointed the frustration I sometimes feel , particularly if I have not been ab le to practice every day. This article really "spoke" to me and gave me great comfort. One of my greatest pleasures is playing the dulcimer and I am beginning to believe that I might even learn it well enough to play in front of other people-some day.

Oh no, don 't let this expire. It's the on ly magazi ne I still get. I've ca nceled the nursing mags and the retirement stuff; they get in the way. But DPN I need for new music, advice, and vacatio n planning. (Which fest ivals, camps, and music stores can we visit on this trip?) Act ually, I don 't play the hammered dulcime r well, but I have me t so many great people and musicians, and have enjoyed the music so much, that I'll keep on playing. I recognize so many names now that it's like reading about old friend s.

via the Southern Ontario Dulcimer Dear DPN: Your November 2000-January 200 1 issue was of grea t interest to me. John
Stockard was featured on the cover and in a profile article a nd there was also an art icle about a dulcimer snowbird
group. I play with a mo untain dulcimer snowbird group that was started by John Stockard in 1996. He helped three people learn to play that winter. Last wi nter the "Off The Wall: group in the state park (Gulf Shores, Alabama) had twenty-four players. We arc a mountain dulcimer group that meets togeth er two afternoons a week ,
December through Ma rch. We a lso perform five times during the season. If you arc a mountain dulcimer player snowbird migrating through the area, plea se come join us.

Musical Reviews Neal Wallers
What an embarrassment of riches this issue! I norma lly try to review only five or six items in ord er to do them justice but I received so many nice things in the mail this time that I just have to cover morc ground, even if it mea ns writing a little bit less about each ite m. Le t's start with the ham mered d ulcime r.
reenfire, Ke n Ko lodn er's musical partnership with fid dler La ura Risk, has already produced two outsta nding a lbums in Walking Stones and Greelljire. The ir thi rd release, A Roof for thc Rain, is the ir best ye t. Ke ith Murphy adds some fin e guitar and Joseph Sobol contributes a rhythmic cittern on several numbers, but the centerpiece is the wonde rful interplay betwee n Ken's hamme red dulcimer and Laura's fiddle and viola. This is a program of mostly Celtic music spiced with a sprin kling of Quebec;ois tunes and a full measure of Kolodn er, Risk and Murphy ori ginals. The re is a chemistry at wo rk here that goes well beyond Ke n and Laura's combined resumes. This is magical music and YO LI should own it.

Hammered Dulcimer Tales & Traditions
Winter 2002 • 21
by Paul Gifford
An Unusual Old Dulcimer [n some parts of the count ry antique dulcime rs are not particul arly uncommon. Although they usua lly lack any identifying info rmation, most were buil t between 1850 and 1875, sometim es in factori es and sometimes on an individual scale.
They ge nerally fa ll into one of several types, based on string ar ra nge me nt, bridge design, sound-hole design, and whether they are rectangular or tra pezoidal. Once in a great whil e, however, one finds dul cime rs of unusual design. These reflect both makers' eccentricities and sincere attempts to improve
th e instrumen t's traditional tuning, tone, or stabili ty.
This past summer Karen Jenkins, of North Branch, Michiga n, brought an old dulcimer to the Fun-Fest at Eva rt, Michiga n. She said that he r mother had found it on to p of a trash
heap in Otter Lake, Michigan, about forty years ago. lts wires and tuni ng pins we re badly rusted, but it was still solid. She brought it home, where it lay unti l recently. The dulcimer explosion of recent yea rs led Karen to try to fix it up. By its ge neral appearance and the use of zither pins, [ guessed that it was made around 1900, perh aps in the vicinity of O tte r Lake.
Its shape was un like any I have see n. For one, the two pin blocks are not straight, but fl are outwa rd so the string le ngth of the lower strin gs is longe r (hence they are mo re ta ut) than it would othe rwise be if the pin blocks were straight. Without attempting to analyze th e load and stress on the strings, it seems that the ma ke r understood one of the inhe re nt problems in achieving an " idea l" str ing le ngth. His attempt involved cutting the ouli ine of the walnut pin blocks in curves, wit h the usual beveled top into which holes for the tun ing pins a re d rilled. continued on next page
Are you tired of playing music not written fOI' yoU!' instrument?
In 1872, we began making dulcimers because they were easy to play, not too expensive, and lots of fun.
Dulcimer Impressions fills that void. Finally, solo music written to show ofT the beauty and depth of this wonderful instrument. Appropriate for all skill levels.

But that was not al l. Each pin block was intended to rest at a different angle from th e other, so that the treble bridge lies at a 90-degree a ngle to the from of the dulcimer. There may not be any practical ndvantagc to the sq uare angle, since pin blocks placed symmetrically will result in the treble bridge being placed at a slightly acute a ngle, something with which players have no trouble. The maker obviously had an imerest in geometry. Dulcimers of European origin universally have had a treble bridge placed at a ratio of 2:3 between pin blocks (creating an interva l of a perfect fifth) , a ltho ugh there have been individual a nd reg ional exce ptions as makers attempted to produce a chromat ic tun-
ing. T he designer of this d ulcimer, however, arra nged the bridge to create an
interval of an augmented fourth/diminished fifth. Pythagorean th eOlY, through th e d ivision of a string le ngth, would make th e rati o 32:45 for th e augmented fourth and 45:64 for a dimin-

One thing does not change, and that is the continuing arrival in my mailbox of immensely interesting information on, a nd pictures of, old dulcimers. These pictures show the immense originality of the old make rs, and also reveal how li ttle we still know about who saw what and who influenced whom.
ARemarkable Tailpiece and an Intriguing Head Dr. James B. Smith of Santa Fe, New Mexico sent me the pictures of the instrument that appears in Figures 1 and 2. Dr. Smith writes, "The dulcimer belonged to my maternal gra ndfather, James Bradley Shepherd, who brought it to Missouri from Virginia by way of Kentucky. I do know that he was considered to be quite musical with a fine tenor voice, and he played the dulcimer as well as the piano and pump organ. He died in 1939 or 1940." This instrument has the single-curve body shape of old Virginia dulcimers. The S-shaped soundholes are very attractive. The soundhole in the fre tboard near the foot reflects an old Virginia tradition in which one to four sound holes were drilled into the fretboard. An interesting feature is the "parking" of the fretboard fully above the line of the body. This looks to me like the echo of a very o ld tradition. 1\vo specimens of this type of construction appear in my column in the November 1999-January 2000 issue of DPN. Even more unusual is the tailpiece ,
Figure 1
Figure 2
Figure 3
which looks rather like an odd-shaped mushroom growing out of the bottom of the instrument! The shape of the
head is also unusual. The moment I saw the side view photo, I recognized the style of this head as being the same as that of a much more primitive in strument in my co llection , a picture of
which appears in The SIOI), of Ihe Dulcil1le1; Figure 52A. These two heads, on instruments th at otherwise have little in common , appear to reflect a design tra-
dition. Somebody saw some th ing, somewhere, a nd adopted it. We don't know where the design tradition began, or w here these in struments stood in it s dissemination.
A Dulcimer with a Short Fretboard Short fretboards arc sometimes seen on folk revival dulcimers, but they are uncommon on old in strum ents. M s. Jean S. Ham of Newburgh, Indiana,
sent me the photos of the instrument that appear as F igures 3 and 4. Ms. Ham wr ites, " I recently came into possession of a

Mrs. Jean E. (Akers) Bruner of Owensboro, Ky. She said it came from her mothe r's fam ily. r estimate Mrs. Bruner as being at least in her 70s. Her mother's mother was a Worsham from Ben-
ham s, Virginia, near Bristol. She
married a Mr. Booker fro m Bristol. He was the musician of the family, and she thought he may have buil t it. " T he dulcimer's body length is 34 inches, but the fretboa rd is onl y 23 inches lo ng. As with the instrument in Figures 1 and 2, the fretboard is " parked" on top of the body. The spacing of the frets, which appear to be made of broom wire, seems to be
approximately chromatic rather than diaton ic. Figure 5
A Beautiful Dulcimer of ''Open 0" Virginia Design Take a look at the dulcimer in Figure 5, and see if you don't agree with me that it would be hard to imagi ne a more beauti ful specimen of the traditional Virginia design with an "open 0 " tail -

A Special Concert with

wo nderful wa rmth replaced th e cool evening air on
September 29th . A hush ca me over the audience as Jean Ritchie made he r way to cente r stage at the Kentuc~'Y Folklife Festi val in Fra nkfo rt, Kentuc ~'Y. Before being fo rma lly introd uced by Jo hn Gage, Jea n gave a very specia l gift to the Ke ntucky Historica l Society to be placed in their Frankfort museum . It was the fi rst dulcimer she owned, o ne bu ilt by Je th ro Amburgy in 1946. Hearing a ran Ie, she explained that th ere was a treasure inside, one that her babies had dropped in yea rs ago. Whe n Jean we nt to New York City in 1947 she used this dulcimer for performances. Jean explained, " It is precio us to me. If you wa nt to give a good gift, give a precio us gift. " It was a lso a gift in honor of the Appalach ia n dulcimer being named the officia l musical instrument of Ke ntucky. After a warm introd ucti o n by Jo hn Gage, Jean o pened her progra m with "The Cuckoo," an old song sung by he r fami ly in he r yo uth, followed by "Lovin ' H enry. " Seeing some you ngs ters playing in fro nt of the stage, she sang an old school ya rd song which told of little girls who tried to kiss anyone in reach, but had little luck luring the boys away fro m their marble game. Jean had in vited dulcime r players to join her for he r fina l

were tuned and ready to go. T he last ve rse was sung a cappe ll a, with all of the audience participating. A standing ovati on give n by her grateful a ud ie nce showed, once again, our appreciation for a ll that Jean Rit chie has shared with our state and du lcimer playe rs everywhere.

Sherlo(k have always been surrounded by music. I have wonderful childhood memories of my dad playing his mandolin nearly every night before I went to bed. Family reunions were more li ke big jam sessions. There were guitars, mandol ins, banjos, fiddle, steel guitar, drums, and beauti fu l vo ices. I also enjoyed wa tching my two o lder brothers pick up th e family tradition and play the gui tar. I never played guita r but I did play the recorder in grade school, which lead to the alto sax in high school. I neve r really cared for th e sax but it allowed me to indulge my passio n fo r th e music. And as a bonus I learn ed to read music and develo ped a n ele me ntary know ledge of music th eory. After high sc hool I a ll but aba ndo ned music. I began an edu cation in engineering, married, and began raisi ng a fami ly. And for

At first it was a so und I cou ldn 't quite identify o n a recording. Then, on a trip through the Nort h Carolina mountains, I saw o ne : a hammered d ulcimer. I loved hearing the deep bass notes ringing together wit h the music-box-like treble notes. A nd the best part was, I knew the minute I saw it that I wou ld be ab le to pl ay it! So, for many months I dreamed of having o ne of th ese unusual instrum ents. I finally acquired my first dulcimer th e fo llowing yea r (1995) from Jerry Read Smith in Black Mountain , North C wo lina. Bu t fo r over a yea r I played mostly by imitat ing what I heard o n recordin gs. I had no idea what I was doing. I simply played what so und ed good to me. But th e more I played, the more I felt an irresistible need to share. I simply co uldn't keep this amazing thing to myself! I began going to local jams, and " filling in" for o th er musicians during the ir breaks at gigs. I acquired a list of beginner dulcimer players fro m a local Renaissa nce festival , and o rgan ized a dulcimer workshop that I lead for several mo nths. I began teaching priva tely and soo n developed a fo rmal eight-week course, which is offered through the Continuing Education Department at York Techn ical College in Rock Hill, South Carolina. In 1996 I d iscovered dulcime r festiva ls. I began attending th e Swannanoa Gathering near As heville, North Carolina. It was tl,ere that I was ex posed for the first time to th e playing
of Ken Ko lod ner. Wow! That is what a ham mered dulcimer should so und like! Shortly after, I met Steve Schneider and Randy Marchany. Now, completely inspired, I began to follow these players, studying, im itatin g, a nd soaking up everything I co uld fro m th em.
am excited that I have been invited to teach and perfo rm at several fes tivals across the Un ited States including th e South Wes t Dulci mer Festival, the Queen City Dulcimer Festival, the Bay Path Dulcimer Festival, and the Winsto n-Sale m Dulcimer Festiva l. I have been a featured musician fo r the last fo ur years at a number of South Carolina festi vals. I have also played regu larly at th e Ga rd en Cafe restauran t in York, South Carolina, since October 1998. Most exciting of a ll, in October 2000 I was honored by the North Carolina Arts and Sciences Cou nci l to be a recipient of a Regio nal Artist Grant to complete my deb ut recording of traditi o nal America n, inte rn ati onal folk and o ri ginal tun es. My CD Waleree was released June 15, 200 1.

In full glory reflected, now shines on the stream: 'Tis the star-spangled banner: oh, long may it wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave. The Perfect Practice believe that practicing a piece can destroy their sponta neity. If you are a jazz musician who thrives on improvisation, there may be some truth to that statement. When recording the landmark jazz album, Kind Of BIlle, Miles Davis refused to hand out scores to the musicians ahead of time because he wanted a totally improvised feel to the music. However, most of us mortals can benefit by practicing, and even the best jazz musicians have to practice im provising. The truth is that most of us probably don't practice because (1) it is too much work, (2) we can't spare the time, (3) we don't have the space, or (4) it doesn 't accomplish anything.

Living with that attitude, practice quickly becomes an exercise in torment, summoning up long periods of suffering in solem n solitude. If your practice sessions resemble scenes from Sartre's No £XiI, then it's time to think about what yo u are trying to accomplish when you practice. Of course, this assumes that you do practice from time to time. Many musicians don't practice for various reasons. Some don't feel the need and actually

If you don't enjoyi ng playing your instrum ent, you 're not going to practice. If, on the other hand, yo u enjoy playing your instrument, then any opportunity to pick it up shou ld be welcome. Let's face it, most of us will not be able to make a living performing or teaching Illusic, so music is something we do for ourselves. Practicing shouldn 't be a punishment, it should be a chance to step o ut of our daily ro utines and do somcthing for the pure joy of it. Remember when yo u first discovered an instrument and played it non-stop until yo ur fingers were sore and blistered? Aim for that fre shness each day, and yo ur practice sessions will be less like a burden and more like a blessing. Well, what if yo u wa nt to practice, but just don't have time? Generally I find that if people want to do something badly enough, they make the time. Gran ted, some of us may have busier schcdules than others. In fact, several short practice sessio ns a day ca n be more productive than one mammoth session. Keep yo ur music out and accessible. Keep yo ur instrument handy as well, but keep it in the case for protection. I keep mllsic stands and instruments in several rooms at my ho use. I can go from jazz to baroque simply by wa lking from the bedroom to the living room. Sometimes yo u ca n also combi ne activities to save time. ment. Others, however, believe that your practice area should be a source of inspiration . Some musicians hang pictures of their musical heroes in their practice room to inspire and encourage them. If at all possible, it is nice to have a special area of your home reserved for practicing. This enables yo u to focus better on the task at hand. You should ask other members of your household to respect yo ur practice area to avoid distractions. You don't need much in the way of furniture, but a few items are essenti al. First, you need a straight-back chair that allows yo ur feet to touch the floor. I know there are all kinds of chairs being marketed for music rooms, bu t wlUll you want is one th at supports good posture to avoid back and wrist inju ry. If you wear bifocals, you want a music stand that can be adjusted to any height. These stands cost more than the non-adj ustable ones, but are worth it if you are straining your neck to see the music. A CD, cassette, o r video player shou ld be within easy reach for interac-

tive lessons. Finally, a full -le ngth mirror shou ld be ava il able so you ca n check yo ur posture while playing. Du lcimer players often look down 100 much at their instrume nt. You can practice looking up and sti ll see your fingers in a fu lllength mirror. You can also practi ce smiling at the audience. You have the motivat io n, you have
the time, and yo u have the room, but
practicing seems to be a waste of time. You really aren't gelling anything out of it, so now what ? First, stop and ask yourself what yo u are trying to acco mplish whe n yo u practice. What do you want to ge t o ut of a practice session? Some people fee l that learning new tunes is not practicing, that yo u sho uld be concentrat ing o n improving yo ur playing rat her th an adding repe rloire. I bel ieve th at add ing reperto ire can be a form of practi cing, but it shou ldn 't be the o nly o ne. Practicing can take va rio us forms. One day you ca n learn new tunes, onc day you can concentrate on improving sections of old tunes, one day
yo u can devote to writing a nd a rra ngi ng tunes, one day you can concentrate on techn ique, and one day you can concen-
trate o n learnin g how to relax whe n yo u play. These are a ll valid forms of practice, and they are all valuable. Write dow n your practi ce goals. If yo u don 't know what you're trying to accomplish, you probably a ren't gelling the most out of yo ur practice sessio ns. Some musicians keep practice journals to chart the ir progress. If you can o nly practice for sho rt periods, kn owi ng precisely what yo u wa nt to accomplish ca n save a lo t of time and still be productive. If you are rushed for ti me, concentrate only on the measures that are th e
most difficult o r give you the most trouble . There's no rul e that says yo u have to play the entire piece every time you sit down to practice. Other times, yo u may want to play the en tire piece simply because yo u enjoy hearing it. Yo u are th e audience when you pract ice. Some-
times it's c nou gh just to playa beautiful tune for o ne's self. If you haven't wept w hen playing
,I tender tunc, you're
missing the point of the music. You set your own practice rul es.
However, yo u sho uld stri ve 10 practice a
piece the sa me way you perform it in front of a n audience. If yo u practice sloppily, you will perform slo ppily. If yo u practi ce mistakes, you will perform mi stakes. Take th e tim e to overco me
mistakes by stopping, then backing up a measure before the problem and playing throu gh it correctly. Don 't ignore a problem just because it is a prac tice session. T hat's the time to lea rn to play it right. So what 's the perfect practice, and is it possible? Sometimes I think the perfect practice is li ke ze n meditatio n. The harder you try the more e lusive it becomes. You have to lea rn to be awa re of the mo ment. Stop and reft ect on what yo u are doing dur ing practice, a nd listen to yo urself as yo u play. I have a fr iend who says no matter how expensive a guit ar he purchases, iLwi ll not
e nable hi m to play Carnegie Hall, but it doesn't matt er to him because he ca n
enjoy a fine gu itar just as well in his living room. Most of us, no matt er how
hard we practice, will neve r pl ay Carnegie Hall, but it sho uldn 't matter as long as we learn to listen as we practi ce to the music in the privacy of our own hea rt. 0

Replacing a Fretted Dulcimer String Strings. L ove them, hate them. We love them for th eir sound and the tactil e connection th ey provide between Ollr fi ngers and our dulcimers. With frett ed instruments like gui tar and fre tted dulcimer, we literally caress the strings to coax music fro m wood in a
most d irect manner. Playe rs may eve n wax poetic over the " feel " of favor ite instrument s. But when stri ngs break love may turn to hate. O ur instrument has let us down. It no longer yields its lovely sound . It has inconvenienced or perhaps eve n embarrassed us. It is wounded, broken. We 're a little shocked to go from swee t music to anx-
In the Fall 2000 Tech column we took an in-depth look at replacing hammer dulcimer strings. Attach ing fretted dulcimer strings is a little differen t. Those of you who are used to rep lacing strings on other instruments, li ke guitar or fiddl e, have probably had no trouble lIsing the same string changing procedures on your dulcimers. For the rest of
us, a review of the process may prevent some headaches and ease the hate part of our love/hate relationship with strings. T he ri sk of string breakage is a part of life for li S. A lways have replacement st rin gs wit h you. Your dulcimer builder should be able to provide rep lacements or, at leas t, tell you the proper string gauges for your instrument and the tunings you usc. If you can't obtai n that in formation , find someone wit h a

the gauges used by other players who
have dulcimers somewhat similar to yours. D ulcimers are often tolerant of string experimentation , bu t st r ing size cha nges can alter playi ng action, into-
nation, tuning, tone, and balance between strings. Accurate string gauges
are lIsually give n as the string diamete r in th ousandths of an inch. A common set of strings for a 0 ' 0' AD (h igh to low) tuning might be: .0]]" .011" .014" and .022". The .022" might be a wound string; a banjo 0 string is often used. A pa ir of long-nose pliers wi th a wire cutter is helpful and will be th e on ly string changing tool you need. The first step is to remove all of the broken string from th e tuning peg and th e hitch pin. Then get ou t your replacement string. Most dulcimers have hitch pins near the saddle (at the strumming end of the du lcimer) which requ ire strings with loops in one end. Sim pl ify your task by buying ready-made strings with loops in the end. You ca n find th em sold as dulcimer stri ngs, or use banjo

Bend the wire smoothly (without any kinks) around a large nail to form a loop and wind a tight noose by wrapping the tail of the wire around the main shaft of the string two or three times. It should look like Figure 1. Cut the tail off so that it sticks out at a right

takes o ut melody notes in th e odd-n umbered measures and replaces them with ot her notes. In measures AI, AS, A6, AJ3, and AI4, there are fewer notes added than taken out. When a tune is proceeding at a fast pace, Ihis makes a nice change of pace. In measures A3, A 8, A9, and All , the added notes dance around on the chord ton es, add ing more notes than were taken out.

Songs from Canal Days Bill Schilling and Linda Sigismondi, c/o Linda Sigismondi, 474 Kathy St, Gallipolis, OH 45631, 740-446-9244, Isigis@zoomnet.net, www.lsigis.homesteadcom (Book/CD).
Soaring Steve Eulberg, Owl Mountain Music, 1015-M S. Taft Hill RD #144, Fort Collins, CO 80521, 970-472-1352,OwIMntnSbe@aolcom, www.owlmntnmusic.com (CD).
Bill and Linda's recording pays tribute to the Ohio and Erie Canal. Though a few of the songs on the recording are traditional, many were composed by Pearl R. Nye, who lived his whole life along the canal and wrote expansively about it. Bill and Linda playa variety of instruments-mountain and hammered dulcimers, auto harp, guitar, recorders, and percussion-and they both sing. Titles include The Old Canal, Fairy Palace, Canal Boat Wedding, The Erie Canal, and That Old Towpath. Linda has also prepared a companion tablature book for mountain dulcimer that contains all of the tunes on the CD.
Steve Eulberg is a championship-caliber mountain and hammered dulcimer player. His seventh CD release celebrates the 10th anniversary of Owl Mountain Music. Steve combines traditional tunes like Simple Gifts and The Water Is Wide with original songs like I Am a Pond, and Uncle Jim's Song. Accompanying musicians are Russ Hopkins on mouth harp and percussion; Carole and Teresa Lundgren on fiddles; Mike Moxcey on banjo; and Heather Wagner and Kevin Jones on backing vocals.

Glad Tydings Gladly Playe wyth Stryngs, c/o Bill Stine, 2109 Junction Rd, Manheim, PA 17545, 717-898-6301, glad/yplaye@glad/yplaye.com or billstine@paonline.com, www.gladly playe.com (CD). Gladly Playe features the twin hammered dulcimer playing of Megan Bartges and Bill Stine with Eric Muench on acoustic bass, Betsy Swartz on violin, and Craig Zumbrun on guitar. Titles such as The First NoeVAngels We Have Heard on High and Patapan/Quantz Menuet, provide a nice selection of music for the holiday season.
Strollin' by Ute Fox Bill Robinson and Friends, 36 W 395 River Grange, Rd, St. Charles, IL 60175, 630-377-0519, dulcimer@ameritech.net, www.ghostlight.com/hr-dulcimer (CD). Hammered dulcimer player Bill Robinson has pretty much averaged one CD release per year since he last appeared on the cover of our Spring, 1996 issue. This is his latest and the title reflects his appreciation for the Fox River Valley area of Illinois where he has lived for the past twenty years. In addition to Bill's dulcimer, the album features Ed Cosner on fiddle, Dan Hoehm on mandolin, Merle Lawson on banjo, Jill Stargardt on bass and vocals, Helen Wilson on vocals, and Sterling Wilson on guitar and vocals. The fifteen tracks on the album are a mixture of toe-tapping dance tunes and heartfelt vocals that serve to showcase both the band's versatility and Bill's dulcimer stylings.
How Great Thou ArtSongs to Ught the Journey Helen Johnson, 208 Oyster Creek Dr, Lake Jackson, TX 77566, 979-297-7015, azalea@computron.net (Book). Helen Johnson has just published her fourth book of mountain dulcimer music, a collection of thirty gospel duets or solos in D-A-0 tuning. The arrangements are all presented in standard notation and dulcimer tablature and include song lyrics as well as sources for each selection.
Swinging on a Gate Phil Passen and Tom Conway, Phi/bar Music, PO Box 617913, Chicago, IL 60661-7913, 312-715-0414, Hammerwrite@ CompuServe.com (CD). Chicago's Phil Passen and Tom Conway have released their first album of oldtime, Celtic, and traditional tunes. Their approach is straightforward: Phil plays lead on the hammered dulcimer while Tom contributes solid guitar backup and the occasional lead. The tunes are mostly session standards along with some nice contemporary compositions included to provide a change of pace. Titles include One-Eyed Cat/Cuckoo's Nest, Blackberry Blossom/Old Woodard's Tune, and Whiskey Before Breakfast.
Bottle Up and Go JimJim and the Fat Boys, Owl Mountain Music, 1015-M S. Taft Hill RD #144, Fort Collins, CO 80521, 970-472-1352, OwlMntn Sbe@aolcom, www.owlmntnmusic.com (CD). Although it's not explicit in the liner notes, I am guessing that JimJim is Jim Pierce and Jim Babcock while Jeff Lilley and Steve Eulberg are the Fat Boys. If I'm wrong, I apologize! Their new album is "an acoustical gumbo flavored with Celtic, bluegrass, Delta blues, gospel and spiced with original and folk rock." The "boys" all play mountain dulcimer and add acoustic guitars, an electric bass, and a specially-made "box set" drum machine. Selections include a few staples from folks like Bill Staines, Lightnin' Hopkins, and J.S. Bach.
How Can I Keep from Singing Tull Glazener and Jim Sperry, Eagle CreekMusic, 6936 W 71 st St, Indianapolis, IN 46278, TULL@falcon.iupuledu (CD). Waltzing with the Mountain Dulcimer Tull Glazener and Jim Sperry (CD). Best of Dulclfled Vol. 1 & Vol. 2 Tull Glazener and Jim Sperry (CD). It gives me great pleasure to announce the CD release of three highly recommended recordings that were previously available only on cassette. These are already staples of most readers' collec-
tions but it's great to have them available on CD. Tull has also published a tablature book for mountain dulcimer to accompany Waltzing with the Mountain Dulcimer and a single volume of tablature for selected cuts from the two original Dulcified recordings.
Greatest Hits of the 18th Century Janice Steinbeck, 809 Quail Rd, Marlton, NJ 08053, jannasong@aolcom (book). Janice Steinbeck has a wonderful and scholarly new book of 31 tunes "tastefully" adapted and arranged for mountain dulcimer. The collection includes eleven songs from The Beggar's Opera, a unique arrangement of the Star Spangled Banner, and selections from J.S. Bach, C.P.E. Bach, Johann Krieger, Playford's Dancing Master, and D'Urfey's Wit and Mirth; or Pills to Purge Melancholy. Each tune is presented in standard notation and dulcimer tablature and she includes extensive and valuable notes on each song and describes its original setting. 0
