The Three Stages of Ceremonies in Marathi Matrimony

Simplicity is often considered as an attribute of the Marathi community. This is well reflected when it comes to their wedding. The Marathi Matrimony ceremonies don’t believe in showing unnecessary opulence.

Moreover, most of the ceremonies are conducted in the early morning as it’s considered as the most auspicious time for the ceremonies of the new beginning.

If you have never been to a Marathi wedding and want to know about it in a deeper way, then this is the right place for you. We provide you with sketch of different ceremonies that makes it different from the other communities of the country.

A take from the start… The wedding rituals begin long before the actual marriage takes place. The first ceremony is known as Sakhar Puda. It is the ritual that can be taken as an engagement. The groom’s family presents the bride with a sari, sweets, and other gifts. That is followed by a puja and ultimately ends with a meal.

This process of celebration doesn’t end here and the next part is the Haldi ceremony. Known as Halad Chadavane, this is a ritual where the turmeric paste is applied on both groom and the bride. The pre-wedding ceremonies ultimately end with Simant puja where the groom visit the bride’s place to get his feet washed by her parents and then offer him gifts.

Finally the big day

One of the main elements in a Marathi Matrimony ceremony is a silk shawl. It is known as Antarpat that is used to separate the bride and groom when they sit down for marriage. After some initial rituals by the maternal uncle of the bride, the shawl is removed. This is a very romantic moment where the bride and groom can see each other for the first time on the day of their wedding.

The marriage enters one of its final stages when the groom putting vermilion in bride’s hair parting. Then, the couple takes seven rounds around the sacred fire and with each turn, they take a vow. At the end of the seven-round, the marriage is considered completed and the couple seeks blessings from the elders who are present in the ceremony.

The new life

After the marriage, the bride begins her journey of going to the groom’s house. She is welcomed through a special ritual that is known as Grihapravesh translated ‘entering the house.’ It begins with a traditional aarti and the bride has to knock down a glass of rice kept at the entrance door. Of course, after the bride enters she is showered with gifts from the elders and then the day ends with sumptuous food for the guests present.
