Library Staff Spotlight
Meet the Duluth Public Library’s Safety Specialist, Kaitlyn! Kaitlyn has been working at the Main Library since September 2022. Kaitlyn holds a Masters degree in Social Work, is a Licensed Social Worker, and has worked in group homes, taught music to young people, and has worked as a therapist, among several other things. Her various skills, experiences, and jobs held over the years have all gone into preparing Kaitlyn for her current position. “This is the job I was made to do,” she says with a smile. The role of Safety Specialist is a new one, created in a months-long process to ensure that the library is a safe space for all who come through our doors, whether they are using the library to check out books or as a space to relax and take a break from cold weather. Adding Kaitlyn to the staff is part of the library’s ongoing effort to ask questions about and expand the concept of what is deemed appropriate library use. As she puts it: “The majority of my work is connecting people with resources and building relationships with patrons, library staff, and other people in the community doing work that overlaps with mine.” She adds: “I like to approach my work with a whole-person perspective.” She can most often be found strolling the library, inside and out, striking up conversations and greeting many people by name.
When not working at the library, Kaitlyn enjoys spending time with friends and family, playing with her dogs, hiking, and reading Science Fiction and Fantasy. Thank you, Kaitlyn, your work is appreciated!
