Year 7 Science: Forces Congratulations to the Year 7 Science students who have investigated the impact of forces around them; as part of their studies, they designed parachutes in order to establish which variables resulted in the parachutes experiencing greater air resistance. They have also investigated the impact of forces in a range of sports.

Visit by Canadian Universities The Senior School was delighted to welcome representatives of the Canadian Universities, Trent and Dalhousie, to visit the College. The representatives enjoyed a tour of the school site and met with interested students who had a chance to learn more about the higher education opportunities available. The universities both offer scholarships to IB students. Further information is available here: http://www.trentu.ca/ http://www.dal.ca/

University of Leeds The Senior School was pleased to welcome Ms Lorraine Emmans of Leeds University to our campus. Ms Emmans is a member of the Business School and spoke extensively about the programmes and courses available at Leeds. This prestigious university offers a range of courses, both single and joint honours degrees, in business subjects. There are also many opportunities for internships with leading companies such as Glaxo Smith Kline, Price Waterhouse Coopers and L’Oreal. Students were interested to learn about the opportunities available to them and the Senior School looks forward to welcoming Leeds University back to campus in the future. For further information: http://www.leeds.ac.uk/

Visit by Southampton University and Winchester School of Art The Senior School was delighted to welcome representatives of Southampton University and the Winchester School of Art to campus. The representatives facilitated an Art workshop with students in Year 8 along with Mr Brown. The students were examining the design cycle to produce a pair of shoes. To undertake this, they examined a painting by Hundertwasser for inspiration and used his style, techniques and colours to help develop their own ideas. The results were very stylish and fashionable, which demonstrates how much everyone learnt during this workshop activity. It is anticipated that further workshops will be offered in the coming years.

Questions and Answers The Reception children learnt about Sharks. You will be surprised how many facts and figures a small person’s brain can hold when they are interested. They may forget where they left their school jumper, but many of them can tell you all sort of things about sharks that even we did not know. Mr Sherwood came to visit in his wet suit pretending he was going to go diving and was a little concerned about the sharks and how safe he would be. The children loved talking to him and asking about his suit and snorkel. They bombarded him with facts and questions. The children played sharks, measured sharks, sorted them, created an underwater wonderland and realised that sharks are not scary. It is more important than ever that we develop a sense of wonder and awe about the world in which we live, especially during Earth Week. We did this by sparking their interest, getting them to ask questions and then to think about the deeper things in life; about the philosophical questions that spring into their minds when you and we least expect them. With their love of facts and figures and attempts to dispel the generally held belief that sharks are man killers, a group of children were told that for every 1 person that is killed by a shark, 24 million sharks are killed by people. A little voice at the back of the classroom said, “That’s not very fair is it…why?” Sometimes it is difficult to find the right answer.

The Power of Cardboard Walking around Seoul in the early mornings or late afternoons you will be familiar with the piles of cardboard neatly stacked up on the pavements; piles that seem to grow inexplicably and then disappear as if by magic. As teachers we never see it as cardboard, but as a pile of endless possibilities. The Reception Shared Area came alive all because of cardboard. It may be fashionable to live in a tall sky scraper, but in Reception castles are definitely the ‘in thing’. The children and Ms Ji, Ms Jenny and Ms Jem worked really hard to prepare and build the castle out of a few cardboard boxes, some tissue paper and lots of skilfully applied grey paint. Some torches were added, a wonderfully gothic chandelier, a table and some silver wear and it was ready to go. When the children were in assembly on Monday morning we added the finishing touches: knight’s costumes, crowns, tunics and enough princess dresses to fill…well …fill a castle. The final addition of some cardboard shields and swords and the castle was the best place to play. The excitement of the children was immense and so was the number who decided they wanted to be there at the same time. It was like Shinsegae food hall on a Saturday afternoon. We are now planning on how to build the jousting area for all of the knights, and working out how to build horses from more cardboard, and to fulfil the request for a school for training witches and wizards to be next door to the castle And in case you were wondering, we do have a large dragon too and there is often, like in all good castles…a fairy to be seen floating around and waving her wand. 63
