Message from the headmaster The first year of Dulwich College Yangon is now coming to a close and we have seen our school pass many important milestones over the past 12 months. Most noticeable amongst these has been the opening of our new classrooms and outdoor sports facilities. However, these will soon be overshadowed by the completion of our impressive new Middle School building, black box theatre, additional covered sports arena and full-sized football pitch. In this respect, I would like to thank our Board of Management for continuing to provide the considerable support and investment that have enabled us to fulfil our promises to expand the Pun Hlaing campus. The past year has also been marked by the arrival of our new Head of School, Mr Luke Chaeter, and the many new staff who built upon the successes of the existing teachers to consistently drive up standards of student learning and wellbeing. Their shared commitment to the school has been greatly admired by our whole community. The Pun Hlaing campus will further expand its staff in August 2017 to reflect the growth of the Middle School, welcoming specialist teachers in mathematics, humanities, English as an additional language and modern foreign languages. At the same time, all of our current teachers will be returning after the summer break, which will provide our students with an outstanding faculty for the 2017-18 academic year. As for myself, I will sadly be spending less time at Pun Hlaing, albeit due to happy circumstances with the opening of the Star City campus on 21st August 2017. Our joint facilities will be the envy of any school in the region, and will be shared by all our students, staff and parents under the ethos of ‘two campuses, one College’. Therefore, I hope to see the Pun Hlaing students and parents on a regular basis, either at this campus, or by offering you a warm welcome when you visit us at Star City. Finally, I would now like to invite you to enjoy the memories of the past 12 months contained in this yearbook. It has certainly been a busy year with many new and exciting activities for our school community. Let me finish by wishing you all a relaxing summer break and I look forward to seeing the much expanded Dulwich College Yangon when we open our gates for the new school year this August! Message from the head Of School I would like to officially say how proud I am to have been Head of School for the first Year of Dulwich College Yangon, Pun Hlaing campus. This year it has been an absolute honour having the opportunity to work with such fantastic students, staff and parents. Looking through this Yearbook, I wonder how we managed to fit everything in and accomplish so much. In the words of our Director of Schools, Mr Brian McDouall; ‘This truly is a relentless and restless school, everything which makes Dulwich so special.’ Our students have engaged in an array of activities from the fantastic academic and residential trips in Myanmar, international sporting events to Singapore and conferences in China. Our students have been both praised and awarded top honours in sports, music, photography, film and debate and have collaborated both locally and internationally. As a College, we are proud of the academic, creative and sporting success of all our students, but also the opportunities which our student community have embraced. Our extensive extra curricula program is a real strength, students actively engage each week in a variety of clubs ranging from chess, coding, art and gardening to Kendo and Taekwondo, creative dance and drama. This will continue to grow further next year, as we want our students to have a rich and varied experience. Friends of Dulwich continue to be an inspirational group of parents who support Aung Zayar Min Monastery School and it has been a pleasure meeting and sharing experiences with the teachers at the school. They have been visiting our Pun Hlaing campus on a weekly basis to observe teaching and collaborate with staff. This has been a great learning experience for all and will continue throughout the next academic year. Speaking of next year, I am very excited to introduce students, staff and parents to the facilities of our new school campus – opening August 2017. Our Middle School campus will boast a ‘Black Box’ theatre, covered sports facilities, 21st Century learning spaces and a full size outdoor grass football and rugby pitch- not to mention a superb coffee shop! Also in August, our Star City campus will open, featuring a 50-metre pool with training pool facilities, an indoor air conditioned gymnasium and outstanding learning environments. Our shared facilities across both campuses will be second-to-none and will allow us to draw the best from our students. I would like to wish you a happy and restful summer break, and I hope this Yearbook brings back many fond memories of what has been a very successful and busy year. Best wishes, Luke Chaeter Head of School Dulwich College Yangon, Pun Hlaing campus

Message from the Early Years Coordinator I would like to start by saying what a wonderful year it has been. A big thank you to the children for making this year full of enthusiasm and smiles, none of what we achieved would have been possible without the staff and parents of Dulwich College Yangon. I have huge appreciation for all the support, cooperation, hard work and kindness that has contributed to a successful and memorable year for the Early Years children. We are all so pleased with the progress the children have made throughout the year. Children, look at how far you have come… A two-year-old cried when their parent went away and shouts, “I want to go home.” Look at me now. A three-year-old dressed in a doctor’s coat collapses in a corner and yells, “I can’t put on my shoes! I can’t!” I can now. A four-year-old proudly washes all the art materials “all by myself,” only to fall apart when a cup of water tips over. Watch me now. Children, we leave you with this message to take on your journey. Always keep in mind… You’re a really special person, And we want you to know. How we loved being your teachers, How quick the weeks did go! Please come back to visit us As through the classes you grow, Try hard to learn all that you can There is so much to know!! The one thing we tried to teach you To last all your life through, Is to know that you are amazing Just because you are you!!! On behalf of the Early Years team, With a big thankful heart, Miss Devanny Early Years Coordinator

Message from the Key Stage 1 Coordinator It has been a busy year for Key Stage 1 at Dulwich College Yangon with many new and exciting changes taking place. The first major change was the arrival of two new teachers, myself and Mrs Chaeter, who have come from the UK and taken up our first international teaching posts. It has been a year of many challenges but it has also been a very enjoyable one and we have learnt a lot which we will carry forward into next year. It has been a fantastic to meet and work with children, parents and staff from such a wide variety of countries and cultures. One thing that has really amazed me is the adaptability of the new children in our school and how they are able to adapt so quickly to a new learning environment. There is so much I could write about the new initiatives that have been trialled and implemented in Key Stage 1 this year, but I would like to focus on a few key developments which I feel have really enhanced the learning in this part of the school. A key part to our Literacy curriculum this year has been the delivery of well-planned and consistent phonics teaching throughout the school. We all use the ‘Floppy Phonics’ program to plan and deliver our sessions and the skills taught help develop independent reading and writing skills by familiarising children with the sounds that letters and groups of letters make. In Key Stage 1, we realized early on that there was a huge range of abilities within the two classes as we have some children who are first language English speakers and others who are learning English for the very first time. Due to this, we decided to mix up the two classes so that the children could progress through our phonics program at a level that was appropriate to their needs. Mrs Chaeter and I were able to adjust our timetables so that we could run our phonics sessions at the same time, this collaborative learning across classes allowed students to be taught the appropriate phonics skills with students at a similar level. This collaborative approach is common across Dulwich Colleges and something which you will see more of throughout the school as we introduce additional shared learning areas next year. We have also implemented a new initiative called CLIC maths which has helped to improve the core numeracy skills of our students. The CLIC program is a quick 20-minute burst of maths which takes place at the start of every single maths lesson before the main focus of the day is taught. The sessions focus on the same elements each day and the constant repetition and reinforcement has resulted in a clear improvement in recall and mental arithmetic. The Friday session takes the form of a quick test which is graded depending on the ability of the students and with time they move up through the levels. We have seen massive improvements within the maths scores of our children and we believe that this is partly due to the new approach we are using. As well as the success of these schemes it is also important to mention some key events that have taken place in Key Stage 1 this year which we are extremely proud of. It was wonderful to be part of the whole school celebrations for the Myanmar festivals of Thadingyut in October and Thingyan in April. The children (and staff) loved learning about these local festivals and the rituals that are associated with them. The staff were also extremely proud of all the children in Key Stage 1 who worked ever so hard in the preparation and performance of their Christmas production, ‘The Colours of Christmas’. It has been an extremely successful year for Key Stage 1 and we are sure that this will continue into next year as the school continues to grow and develop. Best wishes, Mr Martin Thompson Leader of Learning, Key Stage 1

Message from the Leader of learning
Writing a contribution for the Dulwich College Yangon Yearbook provides a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the School’s remarkable achievements throughout this academic year. Considerable changes have taken place, far too many to mention, all of which have enhanced the quality of learning that we provide for our children. From a teaching and learning perspective, I wish to highlight just a few initiatives that I personally feel have had a significant impact on learning. Seeing children develop and progress into independent writers is something that all teachers work hard to achieve - providing them with the tools to do this with independence was therefore high on our list of priorities. Our first focus was to introduce a dedicated phonics based teaching programme, which lays the foundations to support children in reading and writing. Phonics is now taught daily to all children from Foundation 1 through into early KS2; and in as little as two terms, we are already seeing a dramatic impact. Big Writing; an initiative which puts the key areas of vocabulary, punctuation and sentence structure at the core of writing, has also been introduced. This gives all children regular opportunities to write, and older pupils the chance to write at length to improve their writing stamina. Mathematics teaching has also been a focus, with the introduction of CLIC Maths; a mental maths programme that has counting, number facts and calculating at its core. These fundamentals in literacy and numeracy, alongside introducing a new and stimulating topic based curriculum, provides well-balanced learning for all our children. Giving children the opportunity to have a voice in the things that directly affect them is also something that we were very keen to establish. The Student Leadership Council, which formed in August, is a group of volunteers that were democratically elected by their peers. They bring ideas, suggestions and sometimes complaints from their fellow class members and these form the basis of our discussions and work. Outcomes from the meetings are then fed through to the relevant people, including the Headmaster, which directly affects what happens in the School. Already this year, they have influenced school decisions, written policy documents, helped with Founder’s Day and supported a range of charitable causes. When a terrible fire destroyed houses in Pun Hlaing, they were at the centre of organising a collection of donations and money for those affected. These selfless acts came from the Student Council members themselves, and were heart-warming to see. Many other noteworthy events such as carol singing at the Sedona Hotel and the British Ambassador’s Residence, the Primary Games at Dulwich College Singapore, and not one but three pupils winning awards in the group-wide Science Art Photo Competition, have been excellent opportunities for our students to showcase their talents. With these achievements in our first year, it makes me excited to think about what lies ahead for Dulwich College Yangon. Best wishes, Mr Christopher Perkins Leader of Learning, Key Stage 2 - 3
