Dumbarton House A n n u a l R e p o rt Fiscal Year 2013 September 2012 – August 2013

Headquarters & Museum ~ The National Society of The Colonial Dames of America

Letter from the Executive Director and chairman

Dear Friends, Our temporary exhibition this past year—Metamo’rphosis I—provides a fitting theme for our 2013 fiscal year activities here at Dumbarton House, with exciting transformations afoot at your NSCDA national headquarters and museum. In the museum, new collections acquisitions have allowed us to enrich our interpretation of life in our national capital’s earliest days, while the Metamo’rphosis I exhibition encouraged contemporary artists to find inspiration for their modern creations in our historic collection. In the museum interiors, the Dining Room received a stunning facelift, returning it to its authentic Federal period aesthetic. Outside, a transformation of another sort commenced with extensive upgrades to irrigation and garden lighting systems performed alongside emergency repairs of the air conditioning compressor and multiple sink holes. Inside, summer renovations carved out dedicated collections storage space from a former custodial supply closet and office space, and created a headquarters entrance, reception, meeting, and office space in the building’s west wing. Meanwhile, a team of skilled engineers, conservators, preservation architects, and sustainability consultants conducted a year-long study of the site’s HVAC system, funded through a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. The NSCDA 2012 Biennial kick-started this year of metamorphoses as members elected new national leadership (including Anna Duff as new NSCDA Vice President-Headquarters, Dumbarton House) and unveiled an engaging new brand for the Society. Our numerous museum programs, serving just under 20,000 this past year, and these numerous preservation efforts would not be possible without the generous support of friends like you from across the country. Here at Dumbarton House we take our responsibility—as stewards “Entrusted with History’s Future”—seriously, and your contributions allow us to advance our vital mission of preservation and education. Please enjoy the highlights of the transformative past year included in the following pages. We look forward to reporting on still more accomplishments in next year’s report and offer our sincere thanks to the many donors, volunteers, members, and staff who support our efforts to inspire patriotism in our fellow citizens. Most sincerely, Anna F. Duff Chairman, Dumbarton House Board

Programs and outreach Programs

National Headquarters

Dumbarton House continued to host a variety of programs throughout the year such as lectures, book signings, history and cupcake walking tours of Georgetown, Jazz concerts, blood drives, and outdoor film screenings. These programs, along with general museum visitation and guests of private events, account for the nearly 20,000 visitors served at Dumbarton House in fiscal year 2013.

• In October, Biennial was held at the Ritz-Carlton in Arlington. Dumbarton House supported coordination efforts to serve 322 registered attendees. • The first Director’s Roundtable was held in October 2012 following the Biennial. There were 24 museum directors from NSCDA museums across the country. The Roundtable met for two days of discussion on shared successes and issues at each of their museum properties. The Roundtable also included a trip to Gunston Hall for a tour and presentation by Charlie Bryan, former director of the VA Historical Society, on the future of historic house museums. • The DC Society hosted several programs at Dumbarton House, including a lecture by Benjamin Patton on his memoir of his grandfather General Patton.

Author Jodi Daynard at a signing for her book The Midwife’s Revolt

• The Governing Council of the Virginia Association of Museums (VAM) appointed Executive Director Karen Daly as a new member and director for the District of Columbia. The mission of VAM is to serve as the resource network of the Virginia and District of Columbia museum community through education, technical assistance, and advocacy.

Picnic Theatre Company performing An Ideal Husband

• This year Picnic Theatre Company performed Oscar Wilde’s An Ideal Husband in the fall and Moliere’s Tartuffe in the summer. Performances were attended by a combined audience of over 700 guests, and Tartuffe was the fifth performance offered in partnership with the troupe of local, volunteer performers.

Dumbarton House is the first museum and historic site to be honored with the Mayor’s Sustainability Award due to ongoing green efforts such as the purchase of 100% wind power, 100% carbon offsets, and a robust recycling program

• Dumbarton House was recognized as one of nine recipients of the Mayor’s Sustainability Award for environmental stewardship, best practices, pollution prevention, and resource conservation.

Concert with classical guitarist Benjamin Biers, made possible by an individual donor

• Success in rental events at Dumbarton House continued throughout the year. Events included weddings, engagement parties, memorial services, professional retreats, and holiday celebrations. Among the organizations that rented Dumbarton House are KAVI Corporation, Georgetown University, the Field School, and Edward Jones.

Dumbarton House was named one of Washington DC’s “2013 Best Wedding Vendors” in the Washingtonian Bride & Groom magazine

CA Trip participants visit Wolfang Puck’s restaurant Spago in LA

California Trip In the winter, Dumbarton House Board member Judy Mack and Gunston Hall Regent Anne Rhett Merrill organized a fundraising trip for Dumbarton House and Gunston Hall to historic sites and art museums in California. Twentythree participants enjoyed visiting sites such as the Reagan Ranch, the Getty Museum, the Huntington Library and Gardens, and dinner at Wolfgang Puck’s restaurant Spago.

Preservation AND Conservation Historic Site Maintenance Dumbarton House received a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) to fund a one-year holistic study of the HVAC [heating, ventilation, air conditioning] system. Grant monies supported a team of engineers, HVAC contractors, conservators, architects, and Dumbarton House board and staff members, and resulted in numerous reports, including an Energy Audit, Staff Practice Audit, and Systems Operations Manual, which will aid in determining the best approach to updating the current system.

Repair of the air conditioning compressor, damaged by lightning storms this summer

An entirely new irrigation system was installed on the property to better care for our 1.2 acres of landscaped gardens with a total of 40 separate irrigation zones. Advisory Committee member and award winning landscape designer Guy Williams & DCA Landscape Architects advised on the system upgrade

Historic Interiors The Dining Room Restoration work revealed the entablature below the cornice dated to two different periods. The entablature was restored and painted the earliest known color along with the cornice and ceiling. Varnished green paper for the Dining Room was installed in late August. Another major project in the Dining Room was the removal, conservation, and reinstallation of the mantel. To conserve the mantel, two electrical outlets were removed from the top, a crack in the panel with the carving of the USS Constitution was stabilized, and a majority of the paint was removed to allow the ornamental detail to show through.

Removal of layers of paint in the Dining Room revealed that older portions of the entablature in the Dining Room were within the bow of the room and around the chimney box

Collections and Exhibitions Collections

Exhibitions

Several exciting artifacts were accessioned into the Dumbarton House collection in fiscal year 2013. A 1796 letter from Agnes Friere New York Easy Chair, c. 1785 with an early description of Washington was added to the permanent collection in the fall and a mahogany New York Easy Chair c. 1785 was accessioned in the last half of the fiscal year. Dumbarton House also acquired Joseph Nourse’s land indenture for Dumbarton House dated April 22, 1805 for the sum of $7,472.93 and the receipt for the mortgage payments with the final payment on March 24, 1808. The mortgage document gives a description of the land and references it as part of the Beall addition of Georgetown known as the Rock of Dumbarton.

Metamo’rphosis I – Jewelry and Fine Metalware was the first in a series of exhibitions that will demonstrate how forms and design elements found in the Dumbarton House collections are capable of inspiring the imagination. Five artists were invited to create pieces of jewelry and fine metal ware, taking objects in the collection as their starting point. Harlan Butt, Cappy Counard, Ana Lopez, James Thurman, and Charleen Weidell were the artists selected by their peers to participate in the exhibition. Each one is a professor in the field of craft, design, jewelry or metalsmithing. The pieces they created incorporate the reinterpreted forms and design elements and reflect historical social contexts and personal influences. The materials the artists used included sterling silver, mother-of-pearl, ebony and enamel. The exhibition closed in April with all of the original works of art being auctioned off at a fundraising event, raising over $12,000 to benefit Dumbarton House.

In Metamo’rphosis I, the contemporary pieces were displayed alongside the objects they recalled. Among them were a bellows, a violin bow, a handkerchief, saucers, and a dessert plate

Adopt an Object The acquisition of the Nourse land indenture was made possible through a generous contribution from Mr. R. Scott Nourse

Stuart Cobb, Bonnie Trismen, and NSCDA Membership Manager Bridgitte Rodguez model jewelry auctioned off at the April fundraising event

Dumbarton House loaned this c.1815 mahogany sofa made in Baltimore to Stratford Hall-Robert E. Lee Association, which was placed on view in their Great Hall, and renewed a loan of a white porcelain ice bucket, lid, and liner to Gadsby’s Tavern Museum

The 1793 invitation to Joseph Nourse for a ball in honor of George Washington’s unanimous re-election was conserved through an adoption in honor of Janie Grantham by the Dumbarton House staff.
