AN eight-year-old boy has displayed a real heart of gold by making a huge sacrifice to raise funds for charity. Tadhg Reaburn, made the generous decision to have his hair shaved in aid of Barretstown after being moved by a recent visit to the centre which caters for children with life-altering conditions. The inspiring young boy from Funshog, Collon, has decided to get the chop at the end of this month and has set himself a target of €150 for his efforts. However, it is likely that the Collon National School pupil will exceed those expectations as already he has raised €75 online by

Margaret bids farewell to school By Paul Byrne After first entering the doors of Realt na Mara as a four-yearold pupil, deputy principal Margaret Conlon bid farewell to the Dundalk school on Thursday of last week after 39 years as a teacher. Not surprisingly, after such a long association Margaret was given a fitting send-off by staff and pupils. They treated Mrs Conlon and her family to a morning full of music, song and activities celebrating her many contributions during her time in Realt na Mara. All classes had a part to play and the concert concluded with an uplifting rendition of Pharrell Williams ‘Happy’ which had everybody in the room dancing. Full story on page 2

Margaret bids farwell to Realt na Mara school By Paul Byrne
Pupils and staff at Realt na Mara school in Dundalk paid tribute to deputy principal, Margaret Conlon last Friday upon her retirement after 39 years of teaching in Realt na Mara. As well as spending the past 39 years teaching in the Mill St school, Mrs Conlon herself was educated in Realt na Mara and she described the feeling of going back to teach in the school as ‘a very proud moment in my life’. “I first came to this wonderful school when I was aged four and I

think I cried the whole way throughout my first term”, recalled Margaret. “However, I soon got over that and I ended up loving school. I decided when I was in Second class that I wanted to be a teacher and I worked hard to make that happen. I remember the day I came back here to teach having got my teaching qualifications and it was without doubt
one of the proudest moments in my life”, she noted. “This place is like a second home to me. Our school motto is ‘Be the best you can be’ and our wonderful pupils and wonderful staff have always adhered to that and I am so proud of each and every one of them that has passed through these doors over the years. It’s been a privilege to be
a part of this school for so long and I wish my successor Mrs Clune all the best in her new role”, concluded Mrs Conlon. Principal McCaul finished off proceedings by wishing Margaret all the best in her retirement noting that it was a very emotional day for him and everybody in the school as they said goodbye to their friend and teacher.
Joyriders damage property
At 3:30am in the early hours of Sunday morning, an elderly couple got a rude awakening when ‘joyriders’, or ‘death drivers’ as they are more commonly known in the north, were speeding

past their small cottage in Maxwell’s Row beside the Lisdoo. The driver lost control while doing ‘doughnuts’ and hit their cottage. The driver fled the scene. Sinn Féin Councillor Jim Loughran called with the couple on Monday morning. Cllr Loughran said “they are still very shaken after their ordeal which is understandable. At 3:30am they heard a massive bang and when they got up, a car had lost control while doing doughnuts and hit their home, causing structural damage to the inside and outside of the property”. Jim Loughran and Sinn Féin Councillor Liz Kimmins from Newry held a meeting with Superintendent Gerry Curley last week and this very subject was raised as Cllr Loughran explained. “We told him how these drivers were causing havoc on both sides of the border. They

are intimidating other drivers and we need to get them off the roads. They race along the motorway, go round the roundabouts the wrong way and do doughnuts at different junctions. Sinn Féin are calling for the PSNI and Gardaí to cooperate in taking measures to rid the North Louth/South Down area of this blight. “Someone is going to get badly hurt or killed. It’s bad enough they are intimidating other road users but now people aren’t even safe in their own homes. We have been very lucky this
weekend that the car didn’t go right through the house”, stated Cllr Loughran. In the meantime, Gardai have asked if anyone has any information on the incident, to contact them.

Mass At Shrine
A Mass will be celebrated at the St Oliver Plunkett Shrine, Ballybarrack, Ardee Road on Sunday July 13 at 7.30pm. All are welcome.
A man who crashed his van after he panicked when he saw Gardai following him admitted that his behaviour was outrageous. Anthony Quinn of 9 Lisleitrim Rd, Cullyhanna, Newry, pleaded guilty to a series of motoring offences, including dangerous driving charges, as a result of the incident on Januray 16, 2013. The court heard that on that date the defendant was observed at Marshes Upper, Dundalk, driving a van that didn’t have tax or insurance displayed. The driver didn’t stop for Gardai but drove
into a retail park, proceeded through the car park and made an illegal right turn. At the Marshes Lower roundabout he forced his way through traffic causing other motorists to take evasive action, then accelerated and forced oncoming cars to avoid him. He then went through a red light before colliding with a car, losing control and overturning his vehicle. He then jumped from the vehicle, scaled a wall a fled, but was arrested soon after.
Solicitor, Paul Tiernan, stated that his client admitted he drove in an outrageous manner but he simply panicked when he saw the Gardai as he had no insurance on his van. He added that the married father of one, is an active member of his community and held in high regard by his employer. He added the it won’t happen again. Mr Tiernan stated that the defendant had €5,000 in court to pay towards compensation. Judge Flann Brennan adjourned the case to September 24.

Sticky situation on the streets By Niamh Kirk
Dundalk shoppers found itself in a sticky situation on Tuesday afternoon as the roads were covered in a thick syrupy substance. Tyres crackled loudly, flip-flops snapped and shoes lost their soles as they stuck hard to the viscous layer. It was powerful enough to strip paint off the road. The town centre roads were closed in sections over a number of hours as the clean –up operation took place. The disruption was caused when concentrated fruit juice leaked from a vehicle transporting it. The spillage started in spots at the Ballymac Roundabout but by the time it hit town it continued in a steady layer through the lengths of the Newry Road, Market Street and Clanbrassil Street. Roads in parts of the town centre were closed to facilitate the clean-up resulting in some businesses shutting-up shop ear-

ly as footfall dropped. Council staff and fire crews were called in to help remove the juice using a dispersant while Gardai managed the road closures. The teams methodologically walked the streets with the powerful fire hoses, spraying the roads clear of the glue with water and the dispersing agents.
Rolling road closures were required which resulted in some unavoidable traffic disruption and the council notified AA Road Watch to alert motorists to the situation said a Council spokesperson Two fire tenders took part in the clean-up which took from 4pm in the afternoon to 9pm at night to complete.
The council has identified the leaking vehicle and the cost of the clean-up should not be coming from the public purse. A council representative said that in cases where damage is caused by third parties to public roads, the council will seek to recoup costs incurred by it in dealing with the matter.

go in their quest for European medals. “Amy cannot wait to get over to Italy to box and she is fitter and more focused than I have ever seen her”, noted Amy’s father and coach. “She had her Leaving Certificate this year and we obviously prioritised that but she has got plenty of training in over the last couple of months and she is really enjoying the sport again
having falling a bit out of love with it last year”, explained Tony. Seventeen-year-old Amy who hails from Muirhevnamor won the EU Championship gold two years ago before following up that success with a European Title last year in Hungary. She will now look to make it three on the trot when she travels to Italy in two weeks time. Amy’s successes in
the ring were the catalyst for her cousin Orla to put on the boxing gloves and the Crossmaglen native is looking forward to representing her country according to her coach Tony. “Orla won her fourth national title recently and that gave her the chance to travel to the European Championship’s in Italy. She is fighting at 57kg which is the same weight where Amy won her first European gold two years ago. She got involved in boxing thanks to Amy’s successes and we’re delighted that she will travel alongside Amy to the Europeans in July. Both girls are really dedicated to the sport and I know they will do themselves proud over there”, promised Tony.

Man had broken glass in pocket A man who suffered serious injuries after being knocked down was handed a six month suspended sentence at Dundalk District Court after pleading guilty to having a broken glass concealed in his coat pocket, and a charge of criminal damage. The court heard that on June 14 this year, Shane O’Hanlon of 6 Distillery Lane, Dundalk, was seen acting suspiciously outside a night club on Park St at 2.40am. When he was searched, Gardai found a broken pint glass concealed in his pocket. It was described as having a pointed end
and capable of causing harm. Solicitor, Frank McDonnell, stated that his client took an unfinished drink with him when he was leaving the night club, but it broke in his pocket. He revealed that Mr O’Hanlon had spent some time in the National Rehabilitation Centre following his accident and was due to return in September. He added that he was permanently disfigured and that he also suffered a brain injury. He has spent some time in the Simon Community since leaving hospital but had now secured
rented accommodation. He added that €100 compensation had been paid in respect of the criminal damage charge at Pearse Park on July 19, 2012. Noting that the defendant had 14 previous offences, Judge Flann Brennan stated that due to his bad record, he would impose a six month sentence, suspended for 12 months. “He has an awful lot of problems and it is easy to sympathise, but it is not encouraging when he got a chance and then went out and re-offended”, stated Judge Brennan.

seaweed on the beaches By Niamh Kirk
Cllr Tomas Sharkey has called on the management of Louth County Council to get rid of rotting seaweed on Blackrock beach. It appears Neptune’s gift is not appreciated by all. “Every few years we get a build up of seaweed on the beach which starts to rot before the next strong tide carries it away. “The smell is very strong and takes away from the amenity of the area and the pleasure for residents and visitors. “Local businesses in Blackrock have been working hard to build up a trade and summer is when they get to reap the rewards. Visitors should not be deterred by this
bad smell. “I have asked management in the council to clear this seaweed. It is not a regular issue and should not take long to do. “Hopefully all will be resolved soon,” he said. Rotting seaweed produced hydrogen sulphide, a noxious and foul-smelling gas that in large doses can cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. Coastal local authorities in Ireland and the UK sometimes dump the seaweed back into the water when it builds up on the shoreline and begins to breakdown and release the rancid odour. Seaweed is an important environmental marker and its presence is a positive sign that the ecology
of Blackrock Beach is in good shape. Seaweed is anchored as it grows through winter and washes ashore at its end of life in summer. However fresh seaweed is a rich and varied resource that is not always left to rot; it has been argued that the ‘seaweed smell’ experienced by tourist towns is a modern problem compounded by EU regulations, as previous generations knew how to extract value from the annual seaweed crop. Washed-up seaweed can be foraged and used as a rich fertiliser for compost and when simply treated it is versatile and can be used as an ingredient in the making of a wide variety of products from animal feed to biomass fuel.

Over to you Question: What do you plan to do during the summer holidays?
Sophie Curley
Callum Markey
Cara Doherty
I’m going to go away with my friends and cousins and go to places like the zoo and Funtasia. I have lots of time off now so I have lots of fun projects to do.
I love playing outside in the sunshine and playing with my Daddy. Hopefully the weather stays as nice as it is today.
I’m going away on my summer holidays to Portugal in a couple of weeks. I’m really looking forward to it. The weather is always lovely and they have two pools in the place that I am staying.
Rohan Fergus Smyth I’m probably going to go camping in the west of Ireland in a few weeks. I’ve gone away camping before with the scouts and I love it so I can’t wait to go.
Oisin Gartland I love the summer holidays because I get to play football with all my friends. I also plan on trying to make some new friends during the holidays.
Man became upset as he wasn’t taken into custody A man who was trying to turn his life around became so upset when Gardai didn’t take him into custody that he caused €797 worth of damage to a patrol car. Michael Mallon of 30 Glenmore Park, Muirhevnamor, Dundalk, pleaded guilty to a criminal damage charge following the incident on May 7 this year, when he bent the bonnet of a patrol car at the Garda station. He also pleaded guilty to a charge of possession of knives and other articles on March 6 when he presented himself at Dundalk Garda Station and
handed in a sports bag containing a machete and hammer. Solicitor, Peter Lavery stated that he handed in the articles as he knew it was inappropriate for him to have them. In relation to the other incident he went to the station hoping that he would be taken into custody as he thought it would help with his drug problem. He was intoxicated at the time and when he wasn’t taken into custody at the time he became angry and damaged the car. Mr Lavery added that the defendant had been in custody since May 7 and had been doing

Dundalk on top in Oriel Park tournament
Dundalk Schoolboys League under 14 representative team were the cup winners at the highly successful one-day tournament organised by local club Shamrocks FC held in Oriel Park on Saturday last. Saint Chamond from near Lyon in France were the guests of Shamrocks who hosted the event with the help of one of their former club members, Roy Belazri, who now lives in the Fatima area and is the current under 14 Shamrocks manager. The under 11 tournament took place from 10am to 1pm and the under 15 section was staged in the afternoon from 1pm to 6pm in short 20 minute games held in both Oriel and Hiney Park. Eight teams entered the under 15 section, Shamrocks, Ardee Celtic, Glenmuir, Saint Chamond from France, Dundalk SL under 14’s, Redeemer Utd, Woodview Celtic and Lisburn Youths. Dundalk secured a narrow 2-1
The successful Dundalk team with the cup
win over Woodview in their first group game with goals from Peter McStravick and James Prendergast and a Kizito Ekwueme solitary strike was enough to give them a 1-0 victory over Lisburn Youths in their second game. Dundalk then had a comfortable 6-0 victory over Redeemer with a hat-trick from Kizito Ekwueme and further goals from Colm Bracken, Liam O’Callaghan and James Prendergast. Dundalk were paired with an under 15 Glen-
muir selection team in the semi-final and came out on top after a penalty shoot-out. The last game of the day brought together Dundalk and French side Saint Chamond in the cup final of two by 15 minutes halves and it was the French team who dominated the first half and led 2-0 at the break. Dundalk refused to accept defeat and staged a determined comeback and scored two goals in the closing stages of the second half with a penalty from Mark Kilgallen
and Chad McEneaney’s to make it 2-2. The Dundalk players held their nerve in the penalty shoot-out to emerge 5-4 winners, Dundalk FC ‘keeper Peter Cherrie made the presentations to both teams after the final. Productive member of society News in Brief before the drink took over A man who was described as having been a productive member of society until drink took over was given the opportunity to avoid serving a jail term at Dundalk District Court. Kevin O’Hare of 21 Fatima Park, Dundalk, was given a threemonth suspended sentence after pleading guilty to unauthorised taking of a car, driving while disqualified and drink driving. The court heard that on April 13, 2013, Gardai were called to the scene of a single ve-
hicle accident at Bellurgan. The car and a wall were damaged and the driver arrested on suspicion of drink driving. It was later established that the defendant had taken his mother’s car without permission. Solicitor, Sean T O’Reilly stated that the 31-year-old defendant – who had previously been disqualified on a drink driving charge – had alcohol at the root of his problem but he had finally come to realise it. “He knows he faces a potentially serious situation but he tells
me that he has stopped drinking. He has got himself together and now has access to his four-year-old daughter. “He was previously a productive member of society but unfortunately drink took over and all his problems relate to drink. In relation to each of the three charges, Judge Flann Brennan, imposed a threemonth sentence which he suspended for three months. The judge also imposed six-year driving ban.

Drink driver fails in wrong address challenge
A woman who was over the legal limit for driving was unsuccessful in her claim that the charge against her should be dismissed after the address on the blood sample returned to Gardai was different to her actual address. Barrister for Joanne Toner of 15 Park Drive, The Demesne, Dundalk, stated that the paperwork for the sample is for a person who lives at 15 Perth Drive. As a result, barrister Gabriel Haughton argued that this meant the sample could relate to another person. “The court refers to Joanne Toner but not the Joanne Toner of the address in the Garda custody record or summons, so it can’t be presumed that it relates to the Joanne Toner before the court so the prosecution must fail”, he stated. He also pointed out that the certificate of posting of the sample didn’t have the correct information linking it to the defendant. In making his ruling on the application to dismiss, Judge Flann Brennan reviewed a previous case where the name of the defendant was spelled incorrectly. “The difference here is that in DPP v Cullen where a discrepancy arose in the name of the defendant. This relates to an address which is ‘Perth’ as opposed to ‘Park’ and I am not satisfied that it is all that removed from Cullen and I won’t grant the direction”, stated the judge. Mr Haughton stated that there was a break in the chain of evidence as there was no evidence of the sample being posted. However, Judge Bren-
nan ruled that this was covered by presumption. The barrister revealed that his 52-year-old client is the full-time carer for her mother and has to drive her to hospital and to medical appointments. In convicting, Judge Brennan imposed a €250 fine and disqualified for three years, with the ban postponed until December 24. He fixed recognisances in the event of an appeal. The charges related to an incident on August 10, 2012, when Gardai were called to a report of a single vehicle crash on the Castletown Road at 11pm. Officers saw a car badly damaged with debris on the road going back 50 yards. The investigating Garda stated that when he spoke to the driver, Joanne Toner, she said she couldn’t remember what happened. He noticed a smell of intoxicating liquor and her speech was slurred. She told him she had a glass of wine with her dinner. The defendant was taken to Dundalk Garda Station where a blood sample was taken and later revealed she was over the limit. Mr Haughton put it to the Garda that Ms Toner had told him that the accident was caused by her dog who jumped on to her lap while she was driving. He also questioned the fact that the Garda didn’t make his statement until September 25. The Garda stated that he hadn’t previously heard that the defendant stated that she had been given a drink from a woman in a local pub.

Nikkita McArdle (Back 4th from left with trophy), Ardaghy National School, Omeath receives her prize from Peggy McGlynn, Local Enterprise Office Louth and Sophie Coyle, Creative Spark for her poster and slogan to “Encourage Entrepreneurs In County Louth” pictured with pupils from 5th and 6th Class.
Pupils show enterprising spirit Twenty-two primary schools with over 1,000 students took part in Enterprise Awareness workshops facilitated by Lena Shaw and sponsored by Local Enterprise Office Louth. The aim was to show the students that the very things they learn at school every day and their inherent abilities can make them a successful businessperson. Making Primary School students aware of enterprise puts them on the road to becoming the entrepreneurs and micro company owners of tomorrow. Students will realise they can run their own company, know they inherently are creative and innovative and realise the importance of teamwork and the need to complete tasks within a specified time. All the students were given a gift pack and each school was asked to write a slogan:To Encourage Entrepreneurs In County Louth Sophie Coyle Creative Spark www. creativespark.ie judged the slogans
based on a matrix, namely key benefits to the county, location, positivity, trendiness and uniqueness. Congratulations to Nikkita McArdle, Scoil Naomh Brid, Ardaghy, Omeath with winning slogan and logo ‘If your Enterprise is new, Louth County Enterprise could help you’ Following on from the workshop, the students from the class, inspired by Emily Ward and Katie Carville created ‘The Loom Band Company’. They sold their loom band creations at the school and raised over €100 which they donated to Down Syndrome Ireland. The school was awarded a craft piece commissioned by Joe Lawlor Drogheda Congratulations also to Manus O’Neill Rathcor NS Riverstown who won the teacher’s prize of travel voucher.
A man who started out doing a good turn for his mother ended up facing charges of handling stolen property at Dundalk District Court. Andrew McCourt, originally from Dundalk, but now living at 15 Ivy Hatch, Greenlane, Redhill, Surrey in England, had been given €6,500 by his mother to buy her a car. The vehicle he purchased needed parts which Mr McCourt purchased from a man in the North, but these turned out to have been from a car stolen in Blackrock. The court heard that after Mr McCourt had been stopped by Gardai on Febraury 8, 2013, in the
car he had purchased, a search was conducted of a property in Proleek, Ravensdale which had been owned by the defendant’s grandfather. An engine was found that belonged to a VW Passat that had been stolen on January 22. A Sat Nav was also found with the total value, put at €5,015. Airbags from the stolen car were found at another property in Carrickarnon. Barrister, Donough McDonough, stated that his client had started out doing a good deed which turned into a mess when he bought parts that turned out to be stolen.
He revealed that one of the investigating Gardai had told his client that he got caught up in something that had snowballed and it was an illustration of how somebody could get sucked into something very easily. He stated that the defendant had been reckless rather than it being a case of knowing the goods were stolen. Mr McDonough stated that his 28-year-old client was married with three children and now living in England where he was running a successful gardening business. He asked Judge Flann Brennan to be lenient as he was a man of previous good character.

Local violinist in fundraising concert for SVP Local student and violinist Mary Quinn has organised a spectacular night of music from classical to modern classics in aid of St Vincent de Paul. Mary, who studies music in Queens University Belfast, began organising the event last September when she called on her new friends to get involved. Mary was looking for some more performance experience and began to organise a small concert. As she is also a volunteer with St Vincent De Paul, she took the opportunity to raise funds for the local branch of the charity. “I like the fact the money raised is used locally and because I volunteer there I know the funds will be going to people who are in genuine need of it,” said Mary. Among the stellar line-up of acts performing on the night is the Dundalk Musical Society who blew Mary away at a variety performance in Kilkerley last week. Pianist and musical director of the Celtic Tenors Colm Regan. Classical flautist Emma Quinlan and Goltai, a traditional group made up of Roisin Ward Morrow and Hannah Mulholland and vocalist Jennifer Reynolds. Dynimic dance and Scoil Rince CosCeol are also set to perform. A raffle has also been organised for the night with a whopping 20 prizes, but the top prize is a pair of tickets to a Garth Brooks concert - one of the most sought after summer events.
Mary Quinn. The gala night takes place in the Blackrock community centre on July 5, at 8pm. Tickets are available from the door on the night for €10, with concessions of €8, all of which is donated to SVP.
