Dundalk community deliver festive cheer for homeless
By Paul Byrne
THE season of goodwill is well and truly upon us with just a week to go until Christmas Day and the local community have once again shown that the spirit of generosity is alive and well as they once again help the homeless and most vulnerable in Dundalk.
Save Our Homeless which has been up and running since 2016 to help out the homeless in Dundalk, continue to work tirelessly to help those in need and according to Sonja Van Kalkeren the response from the local community to help those in need has been overwhelming.
“We are a group of volunteers who get absolutely zero funding from anybody so we are completely reliant
on the generosity of people in Dundalk and surrounding areas to ensure those in poverty can put food on the table and if they are not yet homeless can keep a roof over heir heads.
“Thankfully, Dundalk and the surrounding area is full of very generous people which has been shown again over the past two weeks with huge amount of donations coming into our office on Park Street. Unfortunately there are more people in poverty know than ever before and we are being pushed to the very limit as we try and help out people locally. We are volunteers and for the last week we have been putting in fifteen or sixteen hour days to ensure everybody in need gets a package for Christmas.

Suspect in Kyran Durnin murder investigation found dead
THE man who was arrested last week in connection with the suspected murder of Kyran Durnin was found dead yesterday morning. The male, who was in his 30’s, was found by Gardaí at a house in Drogheda, after emergency services were alerted, following the discovery of his body. Last week that house was the subject of a massive search operation launched by Gardaí investigating the suspected murder of schoolboy Kyran Durnin. Kyran who would now be eight years old was reported
missing in August of this year but Gardaí believe he could have been killed two years ago. He was last seen alive in May 2022 when he was six years old. In October, Gardai in Dundalk began searching the former family home of Kyran Durnin in Emer Terrace, Castletown as part of the investigation into his disappearance. Under a District Court Order, gardaí took possession of a private house in Emer Terrace, Dundalk.
The purpose of these searches were to discover any evidence which
might provide Gardaí with information as to Kyran’s current whereabouts or what has happened to Kyran.
The house was known to have been Kyran’s family home for a period of years up to May 2024.
It was also confirmed that Kyran was a student in a local national school in Dundalk, up to approximately the end of the 2021/ 2022 primary school year.
Kyran was reported missing, along with his mother, to An Garda Síochána on the 30th August 2024, and as having been last seen on or
about the 28th August 2024. Gardaí released a statement yesterday afternoon confirming that the body of a man in his 30’s had been discovered at a domestic residence in Drogheda. They described his death as a ‘personal tragedy’.
“Earlier today, Tuesday, 17th December 2024, Gardaí and emergency services were alerted following the discovery of a body of a male aged in his 30s in a domestic residence in Drogheda, County Louth. The local Coroner has been notified

“The people of Dundalk, Ardee and North Louth always have our backs and we are eternally grateful,” stated Sonja.
“There are also a few brilliant businesses in town who always support us and all we have to do is call them and they deliver for us whether hat be through sponsorship or donations. We started Save Our Homeless Dundalk back in 2016 as it had got to the point where myself and my friends were walking through town and seeing homeless people left right and centre. We were compelled to try and do something as nobody else seemed to be looking out for them.
“We will spend the next few days putting together food packages
were delightd to
and donations to those in need and hopefully that will bring at least some festive cheer to struggling families during what can be a very expensive time. Once again we want to thank all the brilliant people who have donated to us and we wish them all a very Happy Christmas,” stated Sonja. Among the many
donations received by the Save Our Homeless campaign included Castletown Pharmacy who have pledged to give all money raised from their annual Christmas raffle to the local charity. Michelle Byrne in the Bodhran Bar who donated al proceeds from a recent bingo night to Save Our Homeless. St Patrick’s Scout Group,
Dromad Hire, The Tipsy Cow bar, Kathleen McSweeney, Patsy Byrne, Deaghlan McGovern, Helen Ní Mir, Almac Group Ltd, Aqua Ladies, service users from the Dundalk Wheelchair Association and Prometric were just some of the generous souls who contributed to the Save Our Homeless Christmas drive.
and a post-mortem examination will be arranged. The outcome of the post-mortem will determine the course of the investigation.
No additional information is available at this time. Early indications are that this is a personal tragedy,” read the statement.

County Council join emergency services in ‘Gift of a Lift’ appeal
WITH the build up to Christmas now underway, many people are preparing for work parties or meeting up with friends to celebrate the festive season. But we all know that it can be difficult at times to get transport home at the end of a night out. To raise awareness of the importance of planning your journey home, Louth County Council’s Road Safety Officer together with Louth Fire and Rescue Service, An Garda Siochana and the National Ambulance Service have launched their ‘Gift of a Lift’ road safety Christmas campaign.
Adrian O’Sullivan, Road Safety Officer with Louth County Council explained:
“The “Gift of a Lift’ Christmas card is a novel way of getting across a serious message at a time of year when road users need to be extra careful, as roads are at their busiest and conditions can be dangerous. The idea is that you ‘gift’ a family member or friend a lift home or or-
ganise a taxi for them over the festive season, ensuring they arrive home safely.”
Sergeant Declan Higgins from Louth Roads Policing Unit welcomed the initiative and had the following advice for road users:
“We must all work together keep each other safe on our roads. As of 9th December 2024, there have been 167 fatalities countrywide, that’s 167 empty seats at the table this Christmas, which is far too high. Four of these fatalities have occurred in Co Louth. In addition, there have been many serious collisions, most of which didn’t even make the
news headlines, but which have left people with life changing injuries, Joe Lumsden, Senior Assistant Chief Fire Officer with Louth Fire & Rescue Service and Tom Horwell Assistant Chief Ambulance Officer, made a joint appeal as part of the ‘Gift of a Lift’ campaign.
“We are urging all road users to act responsibly and to not drink or drug drive when using the roads throughout Christmas, New Year or any time. Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs can have catastrophic consequences with members of the Gardaí, Fire and Ambu-
lance services and Local Authority staff all having to deal with the horrific aftermaths of such collisions. We would appeal to all road users not to take risks and to make safer choices. Wear your seatbelt, watch out for vulnerable road users and never walk on the road when intoxicated. Don’t let your actions spoil a good night out and bring tragedy to your family this Christmas.”
The Gift of a Lift card is available from any Louth library branch (subject to availability) and can be downloaded from the Road Safety section of the Louthcoco.ie website.
All Abilities Action Alliance Louth unveil new inititiatves
ALL Abilities Action Alliance Louth, also known as 4AL, are a local voluntary group set up in April of this year to advocate for and to support families of kids with additional needs.
In recent months, the group, which is now almost 30 families-strong and growing, has been busy campaigning, with the help of local TDs, journalists and education sector workers, for opening more Special Educational Needs (SEN) classes within the local secondary schools,
to answer the growing demand.
There have been, however, other initiatives from 4AL happening on a continuous basis in the background.
One of them, called AAC Club, is a monthly meeting that takes place in Air Bound Trampoline Park, in Northlink Retail Park, Coes Road. AAC stands for alternative and augmentative communication and is used by individuals with speech and communication disorders. There are many low- and high-
tech types of AAC available, and the AAC Club allows for the families, carers, special needs assistants and anyone interested in the topic to chat, share their experiences or ask questions, all while the kids enjoy what the trampoline park has to offer.
AAC Club was set up by the 4AL founders Eimear and Alexandra, whose sons, Myles and Tristan, both have autism and significant communication challenges.
‘’Myles is 11 and has been using an AAC device for nearly 2 years, given to us by the HSE. The support from the HSE and the app developer (LAMP) helped us to get going with it. Myles has some words but does not communicate functionally with his words. At first I was worried this would impact his verbal speech but that has not been the case. Myles is benefiting from having multiple ways to help us to understand him. We are still working on it and making slow but steady progress.’’ - says Eimear.
“ We started our AAC adventure when Tristan
was just 2.5 years old, using the low-tech method of printing and laminating cards with symbols, with which Tristan could communicate basic requests.says Alexandra, whose son Tristan, 11, is nonspeaking.
“When he was about 7 I began enquiring with the HSE about getting an AAC device for him. I felt for the little - to none help we got with his speech over the years, he was owed that. After completing initial assessments, the speech and language therapist arranged for us to try 3 different softwares, before we chose one that we thought worked best for us.
When Tristan got his own device, I realised that this is only the beginning of the road, that now it’s me who needs to learn the ‘new language’ so to speak, to be able to model and teach it to Tristan, and then also to help and encourage all other people in Tristan’s life to use the AAC to communicate with him. I had the ‘benefit’ of over 2-years of Covid delays to do my own research, so I
felt confident about using the device from the start, but hearing from other families, who have not taken so well to using their AAC devices, I knew that we are all alone on this journey.
“The HSE runs information sessions and there is a wealth of information online, but there is nobody to walk us through the daily steps of what can be lifechanging, but too often ends up with parents feeling overwhelmed and defeated.
This is where the idea of an AAC Club started in my head - continues Alexandra - and together with Eimear we took it to the owners of Airbound, who were helpful and happy to facilitate our monthly meetings.
The AAC device made us realise how much potential for communication and for learning Tristan actually has, and it gave him a sense of independence and a huge boost of confidence. I think every non-speaking child should avail of AAC and 4AL’s AAC Club is here for other families who need encouragement and sup-
port on their journey.’’ AAC Club runs in Air Bound Trampoline Park Dundalk on Friday’s ‘Silent Hour’ at 6 p.m., on the 1st Friday of each month. All interested are welcome. E10 per child, adults free of charge.
Some of other ongoing initiatives of 4AL, in their fundamental pursuit for access of children with disabilities to education, services, entertainment and sports are: Fun Gymnastics for Kids of All Abilities, run every Wednesday 5 p.m. Horse-riding at Oak Tree Stables, every Tuesday 6 p.m. and Saturday 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. Gardening 4AL, run in conjunction with D.I.G. every Saturday. Sensory Cinema Club - a new monthly sensory-friendly family cinema screening at IMC Dundalk.
For information on how to become a Member or how to help, please email Eimear or Alexandra on info.4alouth@gmail. com or visit www.4al.ie .
Celebrations in Kilsaran NS as they retain Active flag
THERE were celebrations in Kilsaran N.S recently when it was confirmed that they had retained their Active Flag.
The school received their first ever Active Flag during Covid and thanks to the efforts of the Active Schools Committee along with teacher and Active Schools co-ordinator, Mrs Claire Todd they have retained it for at least another two years.
The whole school gathered to celebrate this special occasion with the Active Committee, alongside Mrs. Todd and the school’s special guest of honour, TJ Molloy (past pupil), in raising the flag with pride.
According to Mrs Todd the road to receiving an Active Flag is a hard one but one that the pupils took on with great excitement and dedication.
“We got our first ever Active Flag during Covid and over the last year our Active School’s Committee which consists of pupils from 2nd to 6th class have got really involved and invested to ensure we retained our flag.
“We have kids in mainstream classes and also special classes and every child was involved in activities such as the Active Break Challenge where pupils had to be completely active during lunch break for four weeks. There was also a run around Europe challenge where the pupils figured out how many miles it
was to various cities and then between them they would run that distance as if they were running from city to city.
“We integrated the activities with talks about well being and we sometimes gave the kids a night off written homework and gave them active homework instead which might have involved doing some exercises at home. We had our Active School Week in June which was great fun and everybody got involved and we also gave talks about the importance of staying active during assembly.
“We had to fill out an application form telling the Active School Flag organisation what exactly we do in the school and why we deserved an active flag. We had a visit from one of their representatives just before MidTerm and they checked that everything we said was true. We recently got confirmation that we had retained the flag and we are very proud as we feel it is very important and the focus the school has on being active will have enormous benefits for our kids,” stated Mrs Todd.
Celebrating the power of volunteering in Louth
TO MARK International Volunteer Day, Louth Volunteer Centre launched a groundbreaking research report titled “The Impact of Volunteering and Future Opportunities for Volunteering in County Louth” at a vibrant event in the Monasterboice Inn. This celebratory occasion brought together stakeholders, volunteers, and community leaders to recognise the transformative power of volunteering and explore pathways for its future growth.
According to the 2022 Census in Louth, 13% of the county’s population or almost 17,900 people were volunteering in their community.
The new report showcases the profound personal and community benefits of volunteering, highlighting its role in building confidence, fostering integration, and driving community development. The research revealed that: 79% of volunteers reported increased confidence
76% noted improved interpersonal skills. 75% of employers value volunteering experience when hiring
The evening was hosted by Kayleigh Mulligan, Manager of Louth Volunteer Centre. Opening remarks by Richard Hanlon, Chairperson of Louth Volunteer Centre, and Carol West, ViceChair of the Local Community Development Committee, provided context for the research findings.
In recent years, there is a growing focus on supporting effective integration for refugees and international protection applicants. In Louth, we too have seen an increase in registrations from new arrivals in Ireland. Volunteering is playing a key role in supporting the integration of the newcomers into our communities..
One highlight from the report, referenced on the night, is that in 2023, 42% of new vol-
unteer registrations in Louth were non- Irish. This increased to 55% so far in 2024. An amazing 66 nationalities are represented in this diverse group in Louth. Are you looking to start your volunteer journey? Anto promises to lead sweeping changes in boxing as he is named President of IABA
DEALGAN Boxing
Club coach Anto Donnelly has been returned as the President of the Irish Athletic Boxing Association (IABA), Anto also became a member of the Board of Directors of the IABA at the central council meeting.
Anto, has been a boxing coach for 32 years and along with his fellow coaches has helped thousands of kids both young and old inside the walls of Dealgan Boxing Club which is located in Marian Park.
Having been both the secretary of the County boxing board as well as sitting on the Leinster Provincial Council, Anto decided to put his name forward for the top job in Irish boxing. According to Anto, there has been a lot of turmoil in the association over a number of years and rather than moan about it he decided to try and step up to the plate to try and get Irish boxing back on track.
“It’s well known in boxing circles that the association has been through many years of turmoil and I thought it was about time I try and step up to the plate to
give their time freely a number of nights every week. We need to build bridges and I am painfully aware that I have a big job in front of me but I’m passionate about this and determined to fix the problems,” he added.
“I’ve been coaching 32 years and it can be tough when you are being overlooked for grants or struggling to pay the bills. A frustrating week can be followed by a positive week and that can be through seeing the enthusiastic faces of the young kids coming through the door and getting exercise in a happy friendly environment. That is why we keep fighting to improve things for them.

try and fix things rather than sit back and moan about it. I contacted a number of clubs across the country and set out my stall. I explained what needed to be changed in my opinion to get the association back running functionally again and obvi-
ously what I said struck a chord as was shown by my election as President,” explained Anto.
“I want to stand up for boxers and coaches. There has been a breakdown in communication between the hierarchy in the IABA and the volunteers on the ground who
“Boxing is our most successful sport but there is a stigma attached to boxing as primarily the clubs are generally situated in low economic areas. The funding we receive from government simply doesn’t reflect the work we are doing for them. The general public only think about boxing every four years when it is time for the Olympics. That is only the tip of the iceberg. 99% of the ice-
“The general public don’t see what we do for the HSE with our antiobesity programmes. They don’t see the work we do to help young kids mental health. Without boxing many kids would be lost and tempted to go down the road of anti-social behaviour. We are curbing anti-social behaviour in low economic areas where 99% of boxing clubs are situated. We strive for the scraps in government funding after the GAA and soccer clubs are getting the majority of the funds. Nothing against either of those sports as they do great work too but we have to be fair about this.
“”Through those storms we are still here. From here on in I will try to ensure that everybody involved in boxing in this country is pulling in the same direction. If we all pull together and don’t dwell on the past we can learn from mistakes that have been made and create
Women Intercultural Network first anniversary
WOMEN Intercultural Network celebrated their first year of starting Women Intercultural Network with a WIN InSpo Conference. Founding member Seun Grace Atiroko said that she and all involved with the project were delighted with all they have achieved over the past twelve months.
“We had amazing speakers at our event and we would like if the Irish independent will put information about our Conference in the news.
“The WIN-InSpo Conference 2024 was a remarkable celebration of women’s aspirations and dreams, centered around the powerful theme embracing women diversity and the topic, “She Inspires - Believe in Her Vision.”
Through this initiative, we encourage women to keep their dreams alive, maintain their belief, and actively work towards realizing those dreams.

wealth of knowledge.
Representatives from LMETB discussed the educational opportunities available to individuals within our community. The Credit Union highlighted the importance of financial literacy, while Lilaina from the NWC addressed the significance of empowering women in politics and navigating the political landscape in Ireland.
“An Inspirational moment of the conference was the presentation by Evelyn Nomayo, who passionately encouraged women to get involved in technology. She provided insights on the “how,” “what,” and
“why” of digital technology, along with opportunities for women who wish to learn or engage in this thrilling field. Additionally, Tinuke Achioya spoke on women’s empowerment, focusing on community inclusivity for all women with the power to build and keep learning.
“The conference also tackled critical issues, including Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and domestic violence.
The WIN-InSpo Team, alongside NWC, provided informative resources, and we were grateful for the contributions from Akidwa and ODVS, represented by
Anna, who shared vital information regarding the elimination of gender-based violence.
“Dr. Ebun Joseph delivered profound insights into how we can pursue our dreams, urging participants to understand their values and concentrate on their goals. Councillor Yemi Adenuga closed the session by equipping us with effective strategies for implementing our newfound knowledge, emphasizing the need to be authentic, consistent, and serious about investing in ourselves. As she rightly pointed out, whether people love us or not, it is essential to
“Boxing clubs, boxers and coaches are the fiundamental building blocks of the association. We must increase transparency, communication and policy and protocol and make everything fair. Maybe I’m a fantasist but isn’t it better we try and strive for this than not try at all? Respect is a motorway. It goes both ways. If we can do all of what I am saying we can make a hell of a go at improving the Association over the next two years,” concluded Anto.

“A heartfelt thank you goes out to all our volunteers, our guest artists, sponsors, supporters, believers in our inclusive dreams, and the service providers who supported us, including the Garda, whose discussion on community safety and encouragement for open communication greatly contributed to the event’s success.
“We also extend our gratitude to our sponsors and supporters — Fairways Hotel, SICAP, Louth Local Development, Cultural Migrant Centre, Louth County Council, NWC, Garda, Credit Union, LMETB, LASG (Louth African Support Group), ODVS, Turas, and Future Stars Parent Group—organizations committed to supporting both migrants and non-migrants with special needs. Brendan
3rd ANNIVERSARY
Remembering Brendan Tuite, late of 14 Mountain View, on his third anniversary, 16th December. A golden heart stopped beating, Hard working hands at rest, It broke our hearts to see you go, God only takes the best. They say that memories are golden, Well maybe that is true, But we never wanted memories, We only wanted you. Your life was love and labour, Your love for your family true, You did your best for all of us, We will always remember you. We sat beside your bedside, Our hearts were crushed and sore, We did our duty till the end, Til we could do no more. In tears we watched you sinking, We watched you fade away, And though our hearts were breaking, We knew you could not stay. Our lips cannot speak, How much we loved you, Our hearts cannot tell what to say, But God only knows how we miss you, In our home that is lonely today. XX.
—Your loving wife Maureen; children Paul, Brian, Brenda and Lorraine; sons-in-law Marco and Stephen, daughter-in-law Andrea, grandchildren Leah, Nadia and Patrick and greatgrandson Jayden. Anniversary Mass, Wednesday, 18th December, at 7.30pm in St. Joseph’s Redemptorist Church.
