A LOCAL teenager is currently making a huge impression on the fashion world as she follows in the footsteps of her mother and grandmother. Stefania Egan from Blackrock is turning heads in the industry after being snapped up by Belfast modelling agency CMPR and she is determined to make the most of her opportunity. Although just 13 years old, Stefania has been called upon to take part in a number of photo-shoots over the summer and is looking forward to

her biggest assignment yet, the Belfast Fashion Week which takes place in October. It is hardly surprising that Stefania got involved in the

fashion business as she is the third generation of her family to do so, as she explains. “My mother, Anna, is a fashion designer, while my grand-

mother, Anne Egan, was also a model and one of her jobs was to promote Jacob’s biscuits”, she explained. Continued on Page 13

Staff and students release balloons at Coláiste Chú Chulainn on Wednesday

By Eunan Whyte A new chapter in the history of education in Dundalk commenced on Wednesday last when 80 students came through the doors of Coláiste Chú Chulainn for the first time. The sense of excitement and enthusiasm was palpable as the historymaking students were joined by their proud parents in being officially welcomed to the town’s newest school. The morning began with the pupils writing

down their hopes and aspirations for the next six years, with the notes being placed in a time capsule which will be opened on their graduation night. The students were also presented with a beech tree which will be transplanted from the temporary buildings in Chapel St to the new school at The Marshes. They also received a gold medal to mark their special place in the school’s history and as a reminder to always strive for the ‘gold medal’ in whatever they do in the future. Despite the short history of the school it was already clear from the gathering that the staff have created a great sense of community and the ceremony was concluded when each student released a balloon

into the sky as a symbol of the high hopes of all involved. Coláiste Chú Chulainn principal, Deirdre Uí Liathan, spoke of the honour, privilege and delight she felt in welcoming the new students, and thanked the parents for taking the step to choose a brand new school. “Eighteen months ago the parents were sold a vision of what Coláiste Chú Chulainn could be and that it had the promise to be something special. “Thank you for taking the plunge into the unknown and for having the trust in us”, she stated, while thanking the students for being the founding class of the school. Bn Uí Liathan reminded all that the ten staff would strive to achieve the goals of the school

motto – Cúram, Forbairt and Feabhas (Care, Development and Excellence). Peter Kierans, CEO of the Louth Meath Education and Training Board (LMETB), welcomed all to a very historic day and reminded all that the new students were becoming part of history. “Forever you will be the founding students of Coláiste Chú Chulainn and nobody else can say that. You will be the first football team, the first basketball team, the first debating team, and no matter what you do, it will be the first”, he stated. Mr Kierans, revealed that it was hoped the plans for the new school building would go to tender over the coming months and that the new school would be ready in 18 months.

SOSAD are joining in with suicide prevention and mental health awareness groups from all around the world to mark World Suicide Prevention Day on Wednesday September 10 and to raise awareness about suicide prevention and mental health issues. SOSAD Dundalk will be launching the week with the official opening of the new premises at 42 Jocelyn Street on Saturday September 6, with Peter Moroney outlining a number of events throughout the week. “On Wednesday September 10 we are holding a Memorial Mass for those who have died by suicide in the Redeemer Church at 7.30pm. On Thursday morning The Coachman’s Tearooms and Curios will be hold-

ing a coffee morning in aid of SOSAD. We will finish off the week on Sunday September 14 with the Dundalk Daffy Duck Derby at Newry Road Bridge at 3pm, finishing off World Suicide Prevention Week with a smile and a bit of craic. “We will also be working closely with local priests and our community partners to try to reach more of those struggling with life or trying to live with their depression”, explained Mr Moroney. “We want people who are despairing and thinking about suicide to know that there is help available. All you need to do is to ask for help”, he added. The number of lives lost each year to suicide exceeds the number of

deaths due to homicide and war combined. Suicide is the fifth leading cause of death among those aged 30-49 years globally and is the second leading cause of death in the 15-29 years age group. SOSAD can be contacted at 042 9327311 or dundalk@sosadireland. ie, www.sosadireland.ie.

On Your Bike team head for Clare By Niamh Kirk

Today (Wednesday), will see 45 people hopping on their bikes in Blackrock and cycling to to Liscannor in Co Clare over three days in order to raise funds for the Irish Cancer Society and North Louth Hospice and the Millford Hospice in Ennis. The On Your Bike fundraiser was founded by the family of Stephen Carroll who passed away after battling cancer in November 2013. His family suffered further heartache only four months later when the inscribed watches Stephen had left for his sons were stolen during a robbery on Stephen’s parents home. Stephen’s family and friends went to great efforts to get the watch s returned but to no avail. An information campaign and a

reward of €7k for the watches return has not yet yielded any response from the thieves. Nine months on from the theft and just over a year since Stephen’s passing, his family and friends have banded together and raised a staggering €55k for the three cancer support charities. Such was the overwhelming level of support from local people, businesses and groups the fundraising target has been raised to €75k. The hospice in particular was a considerable comfort for the family, who said that the care and compassion, enabled them to nurse Stephen at home surrounded by those he loved. “We are forever grateful to the night nurses and palliative care team that came in to our lives for those few short weeks and while we can never repay them for all they did for us we wanted to raise

funds in Stephen’s name to ensure the amazing work they do can continue,” said Stephen’s sisterin-law, Kerri Carroll. Over the weekend a group of participants took to the Marshes Shopping Centre for a ‘Spin-athon’ to raise funds and awareness. Between them they covered 360 km in one day with people hopping on the exercise bikes to help the fundraiser go the distance. On Wednesday September 3 these 45 people will get on their bikes, and embark on a 350km fundraising cycle from Dundalk to Liscannor in Co Clare To donate to this cause, you can go visit www.mycharity.ie/event/onyourbikecancer The organisers of the cycle say that the aims is to help the charities continues and any donation no matter how small of big is welcome.

in Brief MND fundraiser

Dundalk’s annual family fun fundraiser for motor neuron disease is set for Saturday, September 14. Now in its third year the day was established by the parents of Siobhan Stewart who was lost to motor neuron disease. The family day had been Siobhan’s idea, and she had hoped to attend the first of many fundraisers in September 2011 but sadly passed away in July of that year. Her parents decided to hold the family day in her memory and it is developed into an annual event in Oriel Park. The day’s event take place on the pitch and includes a penalty shoot out against Dundalk FC goalie Peter Cherrie, a treasure hunt and old style family fun events. A popular raffle for a Dundalk FC jersey signed by the team will also take place. The family day for motor neuron disease takes place in Oriel Park, from 2pm to 5.30pm, admission for adults is €5, children are €2 and there is a family discount. All proceeds for the day will go to Irish MND Association.

Netwell Centre launch Memory Café initiative When it comes to the care of older people, the Netwell Centre believes in combining the latest evidence with a whole-person approach to healthy ageing. Over the past seven years, the Cúltaca, Ann Marron and Pat Kerins, have developed a range of innovative supports, including a dedicated home visiting service based on the development of personal plans to ensure that older people access the services they need and are entitled to. They have also established a number of older people groups, including the Nestling social clubs, Good Morning Louth, the Men’s Sheds and regular Netwell Social outings. More recently, over the past year, they have turned their atten-

tion to developing supports for families living with memory loss, as Ann explained. “We wanted to create a friendly and informal place with a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere for people with memory problems, their families, and friends to gather and share information on dementia. So we are delighted to have joined forces with Ruby’s Vintage Style Tea Room in Francis Street, Dundalk to run a monthly Netwell Memory Café”, revealed Ann. The Netwell Memory Café will be open from 6pm to 8pm on the third Thursday of the month, from September through to November and depending on demand will resume in the New Year. “We invite families living with

memory loss to come along to our Netwell Memory Café where a warm welcome awaits them on Thursday September 18. “It may also be of interest to health care professionals”, added Ann. Guest speaker on September 18 is Olive Joyce from the ASI with presentations from Dr. Grace Kenny (GP) and Dr Olwyn Lynch, Geriatrician in October and November. “These are short, informal presentations lasting just 15 minutes. They are not intended as a question and answer session but the Netwell Centre will follow up on any queries raised on the night. We are delighted with the level of support and interest to date”, Ann added.

Diabetes education programme The HSE’s Health Promotion Department is inviting members of the public who have Type 2 diabetes to attend a free group education programme. The six-week programme, X-PERT, is commencing in the Armagh Diocesan Pastoral

Centre, The Magnet, Dundalk on September 3. The two and half hour weekly sessions will provide participants with information on up-to-date treatment and management of Type 2 diabetes. Participants will also

have the opportunity to learn how to manage their diabetes through positive lifestyle changes. The X-PERT programme is being delivered by trained HSE community dietitians nationally. The HSE is con-

Adding another dimension to the challenge the pair are also calling for donations of towels, robes or thermal blankets that might help keep them warm during the challenge. Afterwards the items will be washed and donated to a local charity. If anyone wants to volunteer to help or donate items that might help Threasa and Gary, call Kay on 0868467226.

Motorists warned over petrol stretching News As if fuel quality is not already a major concern for Louth motorists, petrol-stretching can now be added to washed and illegal diesel of things to lookout for at the petrol pump. Senator Mary Moran this week warned motorists of the dangers of petrol stretching, which involved adding home heating kerosene to petrol. Kerosene is half the price of petrol and is being mixed with petrol after it enters the state. The problem is particularly prevalent around the border area and the west. The stretched fuel can badly damage a car’s engine, with smaller sized petrol engines most at risk. The fuel is more toxic

than laundered diesel can cause irreparable damage to engine pistons and the engine carbonated. There are some tell tale signs that petrol may have been contaminated when driving: cars have a lack of power, the engine can misfire and a knocking noise can develop too. “In recent days, there have been reports of cars across the midlands, west and border regions having their engines severely damaged due to petrolstretching. “I would urge all motorists in Louth, particularly those with smaller engines, to be cognisant of this potentially serious threat

of petrol stretching. Watch out for the key signs that your car has been affected”, said Senator Moran. “Customers who notice any of these should immediately alert a mechanic and the petrol station they last visited. “According to the authorities, the petrol is being mixed with kerosene after it arrives into a county, and identifying the culprits is proving difficult due to the multitude of suppliers. “However, I am aware that an investigation involving the Revenue, Customs and Excise Officers, and the Gardai is looking into this worrying new trend,” she said.

Call for more cohesive approach to tourism A more cohesive approach to tourism is needed to see the north east reach its potential says Dundalk Chamber PRO Paddy Malone. “The problem with tourism is that because there is no focused group to sell it, to sell the whole area, “ he said. “Every American who gets off a flight in Dublin already knows to go to go to Burren, to the Giant’s Causeway or visit the Ring of Kerry.” Mr Malone said that the Cooley Peninsula and the Mourne Mountains together could be a tourism rival to match the Ring of Kerry if a

more focused and cross border approach was taken. The legacy of the Troubles he says should no longer be an issue for tourists. “That ise over for 20 years, so the reason why we are not attracting the volume of tourists is because the area is not being sold to them. We are at the tail end of two tourism areas north and south. But what we need is joined-up thinking.” There are some cross border tourism initiatives, but overall the two industries on either side of the border are funded separately with agendas.

This week the UK national lottery invested £1million in Newry and Mourne to help protect the Ring of Gullion. The investment is designed to protect the natural beauty of the area and will help boost number of tourists coming to Ireland to go and visit the site. Mr Malone believes that there is considerable room to capitalise on the shared cultural history with countries like Scotland. “700 years of history there to capitalise on from a tourist point of view,” he said. Among the links is the bur-

ial site of Robert Burns sister, Alice, in Dundalk. Robert Burns was a Scottish poet and the author of Auld Lang Syne. His sister is buried in St Nicolas graveyard with an inscription of Robert’s second most famous poem, Sweet Afton on the gravestone. (The story goes that PJ Carroll named the brand of cigarette Sweet Afton after noticing the poem on the grave while walking through the graveyard.) Edward the Bruce who was killed at the battle of Faughart in 1318, the youngest brother of Robert the Bruce, king of the Scots and the historical

leader of the Gaelic revival in the 1300s is buried on the Hill of Faughart in Cooley. Praising the work that has been done so far, Mr Malone said: “The tourism officer in Dundalk and others in the north east should get credit for their hard work. There is great stuff going on and the good work can be built upon”, he continued. Mr Malone added that there is an interest in the connection between these two regions and that he would like to see a serious, joint effort north and south to sell the region as a tourism area.

Great win by Greenore U-13s

Greenore juveniles travelled to Baltray on Saturday to contest both the Monarch trophy for U-18 and the McGooey/ Cassidy trophy for U-13. In the morning matches the U13 team of Kyle Rafferty/Jack McArdle and Mark McGrath/ Niall O’Callaghan, defeated Ardee in the semi-final by two holes to set up an afternoon final with the host club. That match was very finely balanced but started to swing Greenore’s way when the pairing off Kyle Rafferty and Jack The Greenore U-13 team that captured the McGooey/Cas- McArdle won two holes on sidy trophy in Baltray pictured with Peadar Gallagher and the trot courtesy of Jack pitchKevin Gallagher ing close on one hole and then

pitching in on the next for a two with Baltray on the green. A superb approach shot to the last by Kyle Rafferty was matched by Baltray. Kyle had a six-foot putt to win the match which he duly dispatched for Greenore to capture the McGooey/Cassidy trophy. The captain, committee and members would like thank Peader Gallagher and the juvenile committee for their efforts throughout the year and congratulate the boys on their fine victory and hope it will inspire the Newsame cup team to victory this Saturday as they face Ardee in Royal Tara at 2pm all

support would be welcome In the Monarch trophy the team of Ciaran Smyth/ Caolan Murphy, Ronan Molloy/ Gareth Kilgallon and Cian McGoey/ Derek McGrane came from behind to beat tournament favourites Ardee on extra holes to set up a final with neighbours Dundalk. In the afternoon final a change was made to the Monarch team with Stephen Finnegan coming in to partner Gareth Kilgallon. Again Greenore got off to a bad start but Dundalk were too strong and didn’t let them back into the match and went on to win 2-1.

No shortage of drama for MAD YT

STRICTLY FIRST COME, FIRST SERVED LIMITED STOCK AVAILABLE!

Up to Members of MAD Youth Theatre are set for a busy time

Organisers of MAD Youth Theatre promised that 2014 would be a bigger and better year for drama. They have met and exceeded their promise and now they look forward to the new youth theatre year that starts in September. Some of the highlights included, taking over the Bellurgan house for the autumn in 2013 for the haunting and then later an engaging site-influenced performance of A Christmas Carol where the audience moves through the house. In February senior members travelled to the Czech Republic to take part in the Class in Action International Youth Theatre Festival to perform a short play they devised. This short play won best play voted by the judges and audience and Craig McHugh won

best actor. The Youth Theatre took part in many events the national association for youth drama had to offer. Members took part in the new stage play 2014 where they performed Midnight in the Theatre of Blood and they loved it so much they later performed three nights in May. Member Catriona Quigley was selected to take part in the Young Critic Programme and Andrew Duffy was selected to take part in the National Youth Theatre LAB. The youth theatre participated in NAYD’s National Festival for Youth Theatres this summer and Griese Youth Theatre Festival in Kildare. They engaged with guest facilitators from NAYD arts train, Smashing Times theatre company, Trestle theatre company and Kalichi. Members attended a few

theatre trips too. “MAD Youth Theatre artistic programming enables the participants to grow and develop as an ensemble and as individuals”, said a spokesperson. MAD Youth Theatre is calling all young people between the ages 12 to 21 who have interest in drama to come see for themselves and get a taste of what youth theatre is all about. MAD YT is hosting their annual open day with two dates on Tuesday September 9 at 5.30pm and the Saturday 13 at 130pm located at (the Coffee room) North Link Business Park on the bypass. If you would like more information contact artistic director Kwasie Boyce at 083 1404747/0860457026 or email ytfordudalk@gmail.com.

Local fighters impress in action packed competition Five members of the Team Torres Competition team made the trek to Dublin recently to compete in the highly anticipated ‘GrapplePalooza Submission Only Nogi’ event’. This event differed significantly from a traditional BJJ competition as the athletes wear only shorts and T-shirt (rashguard) which makes for much more action packed bouts. What made this competition even more challenging was that the winner would be the person who forced the other competitor to give up by using a variety of submissions, largely

consisting of chokes and joint locks. First up was Blackrock teenager, and at only 15-years of age the youngest member of the team, Barry Quaile.

This was Barry’s second competition and his first time to compete in a Nogi event. Nonetheless he laid a marker down for the rest of his team mates by taking the first

medal of the day, when he secured a well deserved Bronze in the under 18 medium heavy division and in the process obtained some valuable competition experi-

ence. Next up was Ryan McCartney in the Lightweight Division, who having only recently returned to competition displayed some excel-

lent grappling skills, but in the end had to settle for a Silver after a very tough final and demonstrated that at only 18 years of age competing in the adult section why he is considered as an international star of the future. Team mate Fergal McArdle found himself in a stacked Featherweight section where after pulling off a beautiful ankle lock in his first bout progressed to the semi-finals where he took Bronze. Rising star Andrew McGahon competed in the Mens Featherweight division and took home a well deserved silver

after narrowly losing the final and en route displayed some excellent defensive skills. Not to be outshone by his younger team mates, Stephen McDaid who was competing in the masters middleweight division won all three of his bouts on the day to take home a prestigious Gold Medal. Coach Sebastio Torres expressed his delight that at all five members of the team secured a podium position in such a prestigious event and with a rising pool of dedicated young talent he foresees further glory for the team over the coming year.

Birches benefit from charity race night By Caoimhe Duffy

The Birches Alzheimer’s Day Care Centre was presented with a cheque for an astonishing €18,100 following their Charity Race Night on Saturday, August 16 in the Dundalk Golf Club. Organised by Peter Durnin of Image IT Group, Joe Durnin of Joe Durnin Accountants and the extended Durnin family, the event attracted over 160 charitable supporters. Business sponsorship was an enormous part of their fundraising effort, with roughly 120 local businesses such as Horseware, Costa Coffee and McKenna Man sponsoring raffle

prizes, jockeys and entire races. All of their sponsors were acknowledged in the race programme and thanks to Dave Durnin, the audio visuals on the night were particularly impressive with over

eight large TV screens displaying the names of sponsors and details of each race. “The response from local businesses and all those who attended the night was fantastic and we would like to thank

everybody who donated and supported the Race Night,” said Peter Durnin. “The Birches provide vital services to people suffering with dementia and we were happy to help”, he said.

However, despite that history, it came as a surprise to the Second Year Grammar School student that she got the opportunity at such a tender age. “I really can’t believe that I am doing this as it is an amazing experience. I was always interested in fashion because of my mother and grandmother and I am more than grateful to get the chance. “It is something that I want to take as far as I can and I will give it my best shot, but I still have my studies to concentrate on as well”, added Stefania, who was born in Panama and spent seven years in Luxembourg before moving to Blackrock in 2008.

A daughter of well-known businessman, Stephen Egan, Stefania explained how her opportunity came about by chance. “My tennis coach, Jim Pringle, suggested that I get photos taken with his daughter, Cara, and we sent a portfolio to a number of agencies. Luckily Cathy Martin of CMPR in Belfast took me under her wing and I have been called for various jobs over the summer. “One of the jobs was the launch of the Belfast Fashion week on August 21, ahead of the event which will take place over a number of days in October. It is going to be a very busy few days but it is something I am really looking forward to as it is the biggest assignment so far. “The agency have been great

to me as they give a lot of advice and support, while it is great to be part of such a professional team”, added Stefania who lives in Blackrock with her parents and brother, Patrick.

Autumn in Dundalk Library After a busy Summer, Dundalk Library is preparing for autumn and winter with a host of events. Saturday September 6 marks the end of the Summer Reading Challenge. The prize-giving ceremony will take place at 11.30am and all children who successfully completed the challenge are invited to call in to collect their certificate and medal. On Wednesday Sep-

tember 10 at 11am, Harry Lee presents “Bringing Back the Memories of Dundalk in the Old Days”, a reminiscence workshop. Numbers are strictly limited so please book at issue desk. On Thursday September 25 at 6.30pm, local historian, Dr Donal Hall, will give a talk entitled “From Home Rule to World War”, Dundalk in 1914. By the summer of 1914, Ireland teetered

on the edge of Civil War. With the passing of the Home Rule Bill, Nationalist and Loyalist militias were arming to fight for or against implementation while the British government desperately sought a compromise. Dundalk with its major army base and traditional support for Ulster Nationalists, was likely to be deeply involved in any conflict. Instead, the world was plunged

into a World War taking Ireland and Britain with it. This lecture will examine how the people of Dundalk reacted to the events of 1914 which were to trigger a decade of cataclysmic change at home and abroad. To book a place at either workshop or for more information please tel: 042-9353190 Or email: libraryhelpdesk@louthcoco.ie.

Back To School - Back

Hi, my name is Geraldine Hughes. I am a 39 year old mother of 6. I have been a member of Curves on and off for over 9 years, in Ardee, Carrickmacross and Curves Dundalk since June 2013. I weighed 14 stone when I joined and my health was beginning to suffer. It’s amazing how quickly weight piles on and how badly it can affect you. My cholesterol was rising and I wasn’t able to keep up with my childrean. But now, over a year on, I have lost 45lbs (3stone & 3lbs), 37.37” and 10% body fat. I have lowered my cholesterol and I’m becoming the mother my children need. I have been able to achieve these results by working out 3-5 times a week and eating a sensible diet. It’s very easy to make excuses not to exercise or to not eat healthy but at the end of the day I have to take responsibility for my own health and be a good influence on my children. I live just outside Carrickmacross and it takes me half an hour to get to the gym, but the 1 1/2 hour round trip is the best time of my day!

Ireland’s Paracycling team of Katie George Dunlavey and Dundalk’s Eve McCrystal (acting as pilot for Katie) are celebrating after claiming a silver medal at the World Paracycling Championships in Greenville, USA on Sunday. Competing in the tandem road race the pair were edged out in a sprint for the gold by the British pair of Lora Turnham and Connie Hall, with the Spanish in third. The Irish team had been in the US for the last three weeks becoming acclimatised to the stifling heat and humidity of North Carolina. On the previous Friday the Irish tandem duo had been unlucky to puncture in the time trial event, yet still managed to take sixth position. Also competing in the male tandem time trial and road race was Ireland’s James Brown, with Dundalk’s Bryan McCrystal, like his sister, acting as the pilot for the visually impaired athlete. The men posted top 10 results in both events but just couldn’t quite make it onto the podium. The last competitive event of the year went to Tomas McCabe when he won the Louth Hill Climb Championships ahead of Nathan McGreehan. Tomas also won the Leinster A3 event, with the main event going to defending champion James Davenport. In the women’s event Annette Dolan took the gold ahead of Sandra O`Hagan. Sunday also saw the final round of the Skoda Cycling Challenge descend on Louth. Fiona Rogers and Philip Kerely headed up a team that organised an excellent event for over 500 cyclists. An 80km route and 130km route were both on offer to the cyclists, taking in the likes of Ballymascanlon, RIverstown and the Long Woman’s Grave. Good weather meant than more than expected tackled the longer route, but with a well stocked food stop at the Fairways Hotel everyone managed the distance. The club extends a huge thank you to the organising committee, marshals, drivers, Irish Red Cross, Skoda Ireland, The Fairways Hotel and St. Kevin’s GAA Club.

Annagassan Historical Walk Annagassan and District Historical Society is hosting the Killally and Milltown History Walk on Sunday September 7 at 2.30pm. The walk, which covers about 3km, visits the following areas: The Bellew Memorial Tower, which was occupied by the Grangebellew Volunteers during Easter week 1916; Thornogs, a small hamlet of houses. We will view old photos to see it as it was in the past; Killally Moat where plans were made for the 1798 Rebellion; Killally House - described in 1656 as “Killally with a fair stone house and Tuck mill”; Milltown House - a thatched house dating probably from the 18th Century to which Napper Tandy was a visitor; Milltown Corn Mill first mentioned as a water-powered corn mill in 1340. Please assemble on the road beside the Bellew Memorial tower. This may be reached by driving straight through Grangebellew cross coming from the Dunleer side. Turn left at the T-junction which is 200 metres beyond the cross. The tower is 500 metres down this road on the left. Wear walking boots or strong footwear. Organisers will provide refreshments during the walk, which costs €5 (children are free). All are welcome.

RCNE host awarness morning in Old Gaol By Niamh Kirk

An awareness raising coffee morning is being held in the Old Gaol aid of Rape Crisis North East from 11am to 1pm, on Thursday September 11, which will include coffee cakes and a tour of the Old Gaol. There is no admission charge, donations are welcome and there will also be some raffle and spot prizes. Rape Crisis North East (RCNE) is a dedicated professional counselling service available to women, men and teenagers who have suffered as a result of Rape, Sexual Harassment, Sexual Assault and Child Sexual Abuse within the North East Region of Ireland. They provide a range of intervention support including; advocacy, information, court ac-

companiment, garda accompaniment, accompaniment to sexual assault treatment units, counselling support and crisis intervention. RCNE also run a dedicated helpline. RCNE 2013 report says that the vast majority, 77%, of people they treated were from the Dundalk area. In 2013 Rape Crisis North East supported 95 survivors of rape and sexual violence out of which over 83% where female and nearly 17% where male. The number of survivors of sexual violence among the under 18s has gone up by 4% in one year. 22% of survivors attending RCNE for counselling are under the age of 18. 88% of perpetrators of sexual violence where known to the survivor and nearly 26% of perpetrators of child sexual violence were family members. There have been almost 100 of-

ficial reports to Gardai of sexual assault in Co Louth in the past six months, however sexual assault is one of the most under reported crimes. The RCNE report shows that only 35% of those who have suffered a sexual attack go the Gardai. The coffee morning is a great opportunity to create awareness for RCNE, what they do and how important it is. All proceeds will go to Rape Crisis North East to provide a much needed counselling and support service to the increased number of women, men and teenagers attending the service. Prior booking is advised but not essential. For more details contact Rape Crisis North East Centre on 042 – 9339491, emailinfo@rcne.ie the RCNE helpline number is 1800212122.
