ONE of the organisers of last Saturday’s successful anti water charges protest has called on the people of Dundalk to keep the momentum going and not bow down to Government pressure. Maeve Curtis of the Dundalk Campaign Against Water, Household Tax and Austerity group was delighted with the high turnout at Saturday’s protest stating that people have had enough and they refuse to be bullied anymore. “People are just so, so angry with this government. Enda Kenny promised change before he got into power but when he did get in it was just more of the same old same old. He has

All systems go for Christmas Shoebox Appeal By Paul Byrne
It’s all systems go for the annual Christmas shoebox appeal as Peter Lynch and his team of volunteers once again help out some of the most underprivileged children in the world. The nationwide appeal has been running for over 15 years and was established to organise the distribution of presents to children in poor countries who might otherwise receive no Christmas gift. Schoolchildren, businesses and households nationwide are being
asked to create gift filled shoeboxes for Christmas presents which will then be sent to needy children in Africa and Eastern Europe. Many schools around Dundalk are expected to take part in the appeal according to project co-ordinator Peter Lynch. “Last year Damien Higgins and his team did a great job and sent over three thousand boxes from Dundalk to disadvantaged children in Africa and we are hopeful of doing a similar job this year. We have teams set up in these countries and we need to get the
fully people can get behind us again this year and help these kids out” urged Peter. This year’s drop-off point for the shoeboxes are Curves (Coe’s Road), Dundalk FM and Emmanuel Community Church 17 Seatown Place. Shoeboxes are gener-
boxes to them pretty soon to ensure that they make it to the kids for Christmas”, explained Peter. “The schools of Dundalk have been fantastic and this year we have again invited all schools in the area to help us out. If we’ve missed out any schools they are more than welcome to contact me and offer their services. “The shoeboxes tend to contain a variety of items. We’d generally ask people to put in educational items such as pens pencils, copybooks and colouring books -

gifts that will give the child an opportunity to read and write” added Peter. Peter who has been involved with the shoebox appeal for years has seen at first hand the joy a shoebox gives to a child having spent a Christmas in Armenia as part of the project.
And the newly appointed co-ordinator has asked Dundalk for their continued support to ensure the children receive a gift this year once more. “Most of these kids just have the clothes on their backs and I have to say it is a very humbling experience when
you see the excitement on these kids faces after they open their box. I had the privilege of spending time in Armenia and seeing at first hand the joy expressed by the children as they open their presents. “I’d like to thank everybody who has donated to us so far and hope-

2,000 people organisers of the protest claim that the real figure is closer to 8,000. The protest was one of a number staged all over the country with up to 150,000 standing up against water charges all over Ireland. Maeve believes that there is a growing belief among the people that enough is enough and she thinks the momentum will bring even more people out for next month’s protest outside Dail Eireann. “We are organising buses from Dundalk up to Dublin on December 10 to take part in the National Citizen’s Movement which appropriately will take
place on World Human Rights Day. We will march outside the Dail to let the Government know we are not going away and we will fight these water charges to the bitter end”, warned Maeve. “We stand at the Square every single Friday and have done for three years now protesting against various government charges. Anybody is welcome to join us even if they can only spare ten minutes. We have to let the Government know we are not taking this lying down”, she added. For further information regarding the protest outside the Dail on December 10 go to www.yourwater.me.

Dundalk man wins second fishing gold By Paul Byrne
A Dundalk man can claim to be one of the most successful fishermen in Ireland after he won his second gold medal at last week’s Stillwater 2014 Four Nations Fishing Championships. Joseph Quinn who hails from Marian Park has now won a gold medal in each of the two fishing associations in Ireland, a feat which has rarely been accomplished.
Joseph who now lives in Ballina, won his first gold medal with Ireland in an Irish Trout Fly Fishing Association (ITFFA) competition back in 2012 and completed a rare double last week when coming out on top in a Trout Angler’s Federation of Ireland (TAFI) event in England. As well as winning two gold medals Joseph has represented his country on numerous occasions and is currently coach of the Irish Senior Fishing Squad.
Having fished for almost 50 years Joseph insists he still gets that buzz of excitement every time he picks up a fishing rod. “I love fishing as much today as I did when I first got into it back when I was a child and I still get that same buzz whenever I catch anything”, smiled Joseph. “I can vividly remember the first time I went fishing back in the late 1960s. My dad brought me out to Toberona on the bar of his bike and we spent the
afternoon fishing. I loved it immediately”, he noted. “It’s been a great honour representing my country in the sport I love and I have been lucky enough to enjoy some success over the years. However none of that would have came about without the brilliant coaching I received in Dundalk through the Dundalk and District Brown Trout Anglers Association and especially John Sharkey who ran the juvenile section and taught me so much

A man who admitted driving while disqualified was given the opportunity to avoid serving a prison sentence when he appeared at Dundalk District Court. Glen Darby of 7 Maxwell Cottages, Lisdoo, Dundalk, was stopped by Gardai at Plaster, Mountpleasant, on February 4 this year. He had been disqualified after being convicted of drink driving and was not insured. Barrister, Irene Sands, stated that her client, who had 13 previous convictions, had been offered work and accepts that he should
not have been on the road. “He holds his hands up and has no excuse. He was offered work and took the chance”, she stated in relation to the 56-year-old defendant. Judge Flann Brennan stated that he would consider 100 hours community service in lieu of three months in prison as he adjourned the case to January 21 for a Community Service Report. “This is a very serious matter. Quite simply, he should not have been driving”, said the judge.

Having won his first competition in Magoney on the Fane back in 1972 the Dundalk man has come a long way in the intervening years as he has climbed the ranks to become one of the finest and most respected fishermen in the counJoseph Quinn try.

Man has his drink driving charge dismissed A man who appeared at Dundalk District Court had a drink driving charge against him dismissed after no evidence was given as to the exact time of his driving. Loy McParland of Inagh, Rockmarshal, Jenkinstown, Dundalk, provided a sample which revealed that he was over the limit for driving. However, the case was dismissed after Judge Flann Brennan ruled that as no evidence had been given by the prosecution as to the time of driving, as a consequence there was no evidence that the sample had been taken within three hours. The court heard that on June
16, 2013, Gardai received a call of a road traffic accident on the inner relief road near Ballymascanlon roundabout. Two vehicles had been involved and when Gardai arrived, the two drivers were on the side of the road. Mr McParland approached one of the Gardai and claimed he had been assaulted by the occupants of the other vehicle, while the occupants made a counter complaint against Mr McParland. The defendant failed a roadside breath test and as Gardai found him to be aggressive he was placed in handcuffs for the safety of himself and the officers. A sample taken at Dundalk
Garda Station showed he was over the limit for driving. The barrister for Mr McParland stated that there was no evidence of the time of driving, no evidence of an opinion being formed that the defendant had been drinking, while the evidence of the posting of the sample to the bureau was inadequate. He stated that all those points taken together were fatal to the prosecution case. Judge Brennan agreed that the fact that no evidence of the time of driving was given meant there was no evidence that the sample was taken within three hours and he dismissed the case.

Farmers join nationwide protests Louth farmers have joined their colleagues from across the country in taking part in a protest over beef prices. The National protest took place at 30 locations on October 27 and 28 with over 15,000 farmers in attendance in support of IFA’s beef price protests which organisers saw is a clear indicator of the anger over the €350 per head cattle price gap that has now opened with the main export market in the UK. Matthew McGreehan, Louth IFA Chairman outlined the reason for the protests. “Since 3pm on October 27, 200 Louth farmers, voiced their deep frustration with the

factories outside Euro Farm Foods over the 24hour period. Our main markets have recovered strongly and farmers are not prepared to tolerate loss-making prices any longer. “The strong turnout of farmers and their families at Euro Farm Foods, Duleek and other meat plants around the
country over the 24 hour period has been huge. I would like to thank farmers, friends and families who attended; your support was greatly appreciated”, added Mr McGreehan. “Farmers are very angry with the failure of the Minister of Agriculture Simon Coveney to tackle the factories on
the beef issues that have seriously damaged the sector and farm incomes since last January. “Farmers feel let down on the beef specification issues and the Minister’s failure to insist that the factories implement the Quality Payment System or price grid in a fair way in line with their agreement with suppliers”, he continued. Louth IFA held their County Executive Meeting on Tuesday October 28 in Donegans, Monsterboice. Tim O’Leary, IFA Deputy President was a guest on the night and listened to the issues on the floor. Issues involving factories and beef prices were discussed heavily.

Dundalk Rugby Club continued their winning run in the Leinster League on Saturday when they defeated Cill Dara at home on a scoreline of 20 to 5. This was billed as Dundalk’s biggest test of the season so far but they came through in impressive fashion to maintain their unbeaten run. Try-scorers for the hosts were Johnny Gray and Chris Scully, with Ultan Murphy adding two conversions and two penalties to help secure the victory. Dundalk 2nds also went into the weekend with an unbeaten record, but unfortunately they suffered a first defeat when they went down to Cill Dara on a 17-15 scoreline. A Paddy Reilly penalty and an Eamon Roe try had Dundalk in a good position at the break. However, the Kildare side raised their game in the second half and claimed their first win of the season thanks to a late try. Meanwhile, the Under

Robert Malone breaks through the Clondalkin defence on the way to a try
11 Sharks entertained sides from Virginia and Clondalkin on Sunday morning at Mill Road. The Black Sharks outing against Virginia was a keenly fought affair with Dundalk scoring three great tries through Sam Malone, Conal O’Callaghan and Ciaran Tiernan and were unlucky not to get a fourth through debutant Caoimhin O’Neill. The Black Sharks second outing against Clondalkin was more of the same and they scored through two great Robert Malone tries, two super solo efforts from
Conal O’Callaghan, a fine effort from Sam Malone along with a brilliant first ever try for Ethan Gilligan. The White Sharks started against a physical Clondalkin and saw Joseph Pheifer kick off the scoring followed by three unanswered tries from the irrepressible Kieran McArdle and a superb brace of tries from Milo Moore. Match 2 for the White Sharks saw tries from Joseph Pheifer, Brian McCahill and Peter Rice. Dundalk Under 12s were in action at home
this week playing host to Malahide and two strong teams to start and had the better of Malahide in all areas. Dundalk’s direct running by Johna Power, Lee O’Carroll, Jake McNamara and Dara Toner paid off. Persistent pressure from Dundalk saw Adam Duffy bag four tries on the day. James Toal’s passing and play making was excellent and tries from Lee O’Caroll, James King, Jack Mullroy, Calum Bourton made it a very good day for the home squad.

Mavericks hold first awards night Dundalk Mavericks held their first ever Players Award Night in Kehoes Bar, Quay Street, recently in an effort to recognise players for the hard work put into training, their determination and attitudes towards the club. All this was what led the Mavericks to secure a place in last season’s IAFL-2 championship game against the Tyrone Titans. The first award of the night was Special Teams MVP which was jointly won by punter Barry Durnin and Cormac Conway for his place holding skills. The next award of the night was Defensive MVP which was won by linebacker Iarla Donlon.
Dundalk Mavericks held their awards night recently
The Maverick award was created to award the person who best fits the meaning of the club name. It is awarded to the person who shows independence and does the unexpected and this year’s winner was Shane McNulty, Defensive lineman, for intercepting the Galway Warriors and returning the ball for a 93 yard touchdown.
The offensive MVP winner was running back Robert Caldwell. Robert is a player who never let anything stop him from reaching his goals and always has a positive attitude to brings to the club. The Mavericks committee came up with the Clubperson of the Year award for the person who not only
performed well on the field but dedicated their free time to help the club in other ways off the field too. This years winner, Shane McNulty, provided the club with some amazing graphic designs and also created the clubs website. Not all players on the team have had experience playing American football or have even watched a game on television but their contribution to the team can be outstanding. The Rookie of the Year, was awarded to Guntis Vitolins. The most prestigious award of the night was the MVP award and this year’s recipient was Matthew Hagan. He played offence, defence and special teams, he
scored touchdowns, field goals and pats, and when the club needed him he stepped up as quarterback. The wooden spoon award was for the person who did the most idiotic thing throughout the season. This year’s winner was David Ward, our cameraman for the first game of the season, who was a bit too enthusiastic when the mavericks scored their first ever touchdown and zoomed in too much and missed the touchdown. The Mavericks are currently running their rookie camp in DKIT sports grounds, Sundays at 11am and would like to invite anyone over the age of 18 to come down and give it a go.
Council monitors Carlingford Lough after oil spill
Louth County Council has been monitoring the shoreline at Carlingford Lough following an oil spill in Warrenpoint. The council was informed on October 23 of a fuel oil spillage at Warrenpoint harbour which occurred on the previous night.
The affected areas reported were Warrenpoint Harbour and an area of foreshore near Narrow Water Castle in Co. Down. Booms were deployed at Warrenpoint Harbour and an on-going beach clean is being carried out at Narrow Water Castle by the Northern au-

lic bodies have been inspecting the foreshore since the incident was notified to the Council. Some contaminated seaweed has been found along the foreshore in an area North of Omeath and the council is arranging for removal and disposal of the affected material. On the Louth side of the

Over to you Question: Are you worried about Ebola spreading to Ireland?
Declan Deasy
Seamus Byrne
Ethel Durkin
Naomi O’Donoghue
Davy McArdle
I think the whole thing has been overblown by the media. I think the bird flu was more of a serious worldwide threat than ebola. But from the information we have at the moment I wouldn’t be worried.
I don’t think there is any great risk for this country. The department of health and the HSE are aware of the dangers and I trust that they are well on top of the issue.
I don’t really know if I should be worried or not. You would hope that those in charge have put in place all possible steps to stop it getting into the country. Once we’re careful at airports etc hopefully we’ll be OK.
I wouldn’t be worried at all about it. What is the point of worrying over something which you have absolutely no control over.
I wouldn’t be worried about anything like that until there was a confirmed case of ebola in the country. There’s far too much other stuff for me to be worrying about without adding that to the list.
Dundalk FC victory parade A torrential downpour refused to dampen the spirits of thousands of Dundalk FC supporters who lined the streets to give their team a rousing reception on Saturday afternoon. The recently crowned league and Ea Sports Cup champions began their victory parade on an open top bus at the Crowne Plaza before making their way up to Hill Street Bridge before going through the town on the way to the Square and Clanbrassil Street. Led by the Carlingford Pipe Band the victorious Dundalk team alongside Stephen Kenny and his coaching staff slowly made their way through the driving rain up to Market Square where they were given a heroe’s reception. Chants of ‘Championes’ rang out
as players showed off this season’s winning silverware to their adoring public. One by one players grabbed the microphone thanking the fans for their unwavering support. An emotional Stephen Kenny thanked everybody for braving the horrendous conditions and praising them for their efforts throughout the season. “It’s absolutely fantastic to see you all out given the weather that’s in it today”, declared the manager. “I’ll tell you what the support we’ve had home and away all season has been nothing short of inspirational. You have all been brilliant thank you so much. And you know what? You have to enjoy these moments. And I’ll tell you that it’s only the start with ourselves. It’s been a long journey to get to where we
are today but I ask you all to get on board for the next couple of years because it is going to be magnificent. “ ,he urged. Later that evening Dundalk FC players staff and supporters dried themselves off before heading to the Lisdoo for the club’s player of the year awards. Barnstorming midfielder Chris Shields was the big winner on the night winning the supporters player of the year award as well as the players player of the year award. Pat Hoban picked up the top goalscorer award as well as coach’s player of the year while Daryl Horgan walked away with the young player of the year award. Dundalk’s fans were also honoured with diehard fans Paddy and Iris McGuinness picking up the support- Stephen Kenny and Dundalk F.C. players celebrate their win with crowds of fans who braved the rain on Saturday afternoon. ers of the year award.

Football Camp over the mid term break from school: Barry Clarke, Jose Romero, Gary Rogers, Allan Ramsey, Eamonn Farrell, Michael McCahill, Dylan Johnston and Ciaran Caldwell
Glenmuir begin partnership with Celtic Glenmuir FC started its first phase of its Glasgow Celtic Soccer Academy International Partnership programme. The club welcomed four coaches, Michael McCahill, Jose Romero, Allan Ramsay and Dylan Johnston, to Glenmuir. These Glasgow Celtic coaches have travelled all around the world to other international partners delivering this world famous camp and are a credit to Celtic & the Celtic Academy. Over 100 participants, ranging from 5 to 16 years of age, were registered on this year’s camp at Glenmuir FC, with the vast majority members of the club. The four Celtic coaches were overwhelmed by the enthusiasm of participants during the camp. The insight into how a club like Glasgow Celtic runs its academy is invaluable to Glenmuir FC and will have a huge influence for their future. Glenmuir FC want local players to reach their full potential, the Celtic coaches believe the quality of the players and coaches at the club is very high. Each day during the camp we received excellent feedback from all the kids and parents collecting them after the camp.

Louth enjoys sweet taste of success From Page 1 when his father rang him from London to tell him that he had come out on top. “I wasn’t at the awards myself but my dad has been going over to the London Honey International Show for about 30 years now and he was there when the judges announced I had won the World Cup. It was a lovely phonecall to receive and I was delighted to have impressed the judges with my honey”, remarked Eoghan. According to Eoghan, Louth is a wonderful county to produce honey and he puts his success down to the wonderful countryside we have on our doorsteps. “We are blessed with a very healthy countryside which allows us to create very good honey. I make a lot of my honey from areas around Cooley which is an almost perfect environment thanks to the landscape and the diversity of natural foliage”, explains Eoghan. “When judges are looking at honey they are judging the colour, thickness aroma and probably most importantly the cleanliness of the

artists even less so, because they’ve got to fund their own records. Releasing an album the traditional way can take up to three years. This way, Declan gets to release great new songs, that have been piling up, directly to the fans. Declan will still release physical albums in the traditional way. In fact, this project actually helps him to do that, because new music raises profile and creates demand. New music is essential to a growing career. This project is about an indie artist using the tools available to him right now to maximum effect.

Fr McNally Orchestra returns
The Fr McNally Orchestra will perform in Carlingford
The Fr McNally Chamber Orchestra makes a welcome return to the Heritage Centre, Carlingford. Following a sold out performance last November the Fr McNally Chamber Orchestra is delighted to be returning, by popular demand, to the Heritage Centre on Sunday 9th November at 3pm. Joining the Orchestra on this occasion is young violinist, Conor Masterson, from Poyntzpass. Conor was one of the final students to be taught

by Fr McNally. Subsequently, and rather fittingly, Conor went on to be the first winner and recipient of the Fr Brendan McNally Cup and Bursary for the Concerto Class at Newry Feis. This award carries with it an opportunity to perform as soloist with the Fr McNally Chamber Orchestra and the Orchestra is delighted to be performing with such a talented, and promising, young musician. As has come to be expected from the Fr McNally Chamber
Orchestra, this performance, entitled ‘Concerto Classics’, promises to deliver yet another heart-warming programme spanning through the ages from Bach to the relatively unknown 20th Century British composer Finzi. Tickets, at a cost of €10, are available from orchestra members and at the Heritage Centre Carlingford. In order to avoid disappointment, advance purchase is advisable.

51 Shades hit comedy hits the North East
Direct from a seven-week sell-out run at Dublin’s Tivoli Theatre, the smash hit comedy Fifty One Shades of Maggie, is heading for the North East. The best selling Irish send-up of 50 Shades of Grey will perform in the TLT, Drogheda, on Saturday November 18. The show tells the story of loveable Maggie Muff and her search for love. Maggie
is a working class girl who, like most women, has been let down by all the men in her life. Attending an interview at the Social Security Office Maggie meets the handsome and hunky Mr Big. But will Mr Big turn out to be the man of her dreams, or will his “Private Room of Pain” put her off? This hilarious new play full of naughty bits will have
you laughing out loud. Join Maggie and her friends on this (slightly filthy) journey of love, booze and whips! This is the perfect girly night out with your friends for the best night at the theatre you’ve had in ages. Please note due to the strong language and themes of an adult nature this show is deemed unsuitable for anyone under the age of 16.
