Attempt to lure children into car

PARENTS and children have been warned to be on the alert after reports emerged of a suspicious approach made to juveniles in Dundalk on Monday. The incident occurred in the Tom Bellew Avenue area around 4.30pm. The children were approached by a man in a black Ford Fiesta, who offered to give them biscuits if they got into the back seat. The children, aged between eight and nine declined the offer before reporting the incident to their parents, and it is understood that Gardai were alerted. Louth County councillor Maeve Yore described the incident as ‘frightening’ and warned parents to be vigilant to the dangers of inci-

dents like this. “It’s frightening to hear of something like this happening. I have an 11 year old girl myself and I shudder to think what might happen if somebody asked her to get into a car. I live close to where the incident happened and hearing stuff like this really does frighten and shock me”, said Maeve. “Unfortunately due to Government cuts there are probably not enough Gardaí on the streets at the moment and I feel a greater Garda presence may deter incidents like this happening”, added the councillor. Sinn Fein councillor, Kevin Meenan, also expressed his concerns regarding the incident and suggested it may be a good idea for Gardaí to visit schools Continued on Page 16

Town continues to win fight against litter By Paul Byrne

Nursing Opportunities in Dundalk TTM Healthcare on behalf of our client, a private Homecare Provider, Resilience Ireland are currently recruiting Nurses for permanent and part time positions for a home care case in the Dundalk region. Nurses of all disciplines are welcome. Immediate interviews available. For more information on these positions please phone Jane on 086 0479202 or email Jane at jboland@ttmhealthcare.com

The latest survey by business group Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) shows Dundalk has finished 29th out of 40 areas surveyed and maintains its ‘Cleaner than European Norms” rating. The table shows that Dundalk has more or less maintained its position in the IBAL table having finished 28th last year. The

results solidify Dundalk’s good showing in recent years having finished a poor 37th back in 2012. The IBAL judging panel were impressed by Dundalk Grammar School, the managed recycle facility and the Dundalk Institute of Technology. However there were black marks for Clanbrassil St and the connecting road between Dundalk and Drogheda.

Set up in 1996, Irish Business Against Litter is an alliance of companies sharing a belief that continued economic prosperity – notably in the areas of tourism, food and direct foreign investment – is contingent on a clean, litter-free environment. As part of the IBAL Anti-Litter League, An Taisce monitors towns independently and in accordance with inter-

national grading stand- blackspots. Dundalk’s and has been categoards. The programme neighbours Drogheda rised as ‘Moderately is run in conjunction finished in 35th place Littered’. with the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government. Kilkenny were once again named tidiest town in the IBAL Litter League coming out on top for the third year in a row while at the other end of the table Farranree in Co. Cork and North Inner City Dublin were listed as litter

Remarks make by IBAL judging panel THE judging panel had the following to say about various areas around Dundalk: Dundalk Grammar School: Grade A. A very well presented and maintained educational environment – well done

to all involved in same. Dundalk Recycling: Grade A. The entrance was in excellent order. There was a complete absence of litter in the area surveyed. Dundalk Institute of Technology: Grade A. Dundalk Institute of Technology is very much living up to the ethos of the Green Flag – it was spotless throughout. Castleblayney Approach Road: Grade B. There was a variety of litter at this site. Dunnes Stores Car Park: Grade B. There was litter within the car park proper and the surrounding pedestrian pathways. Clanbrassil Street: Grade C. This street is very well served by litter bins and has had a relatively recent lift in terms of presentation of the Square and courthouse so it is a real shame to see it score so poorly. Oriel Park: Grade B. A more thorough approach to cleaning could make a big difference to this site. Dundalk Train Station: Grade B. This site just missed getting the top litter grade but with a little extra care this could easily be achieved.

Lions Club grateful for help with Christmas food appeal By Paul Byrne

AROUND 250 food hampers were delivered all around Dundalk in time for Christmas courtesy of the Dundalk Lions Club in what was a welcome boost for those in need around town. Lions Club president, Declan Dempsey, thanked all those who helped make the project a success especially the volunteers who delivered the hampers and all those who donated to the Lions Club Christmas Food Appeal. He also praised local schools Realt na Mara and Colaiste Cú Chulainn for their help in collecting food for the 250 hampers.

“We would like to thank all of the volunteers. We received tremendous support and we are absolutely thrilled with the tremendous response we received from the people of Dundalk”, enthused Declan. On the Saturday before Christmas volunteers collected the 250 hampers making their way around Dundalk delivering hampers to those in need. According to Declan the Lions Club rely on the generosity of the people in Dundalk to ensure the food appeal is a success each year. “The Christmas food appeal is a fairly big project and we hold a poker classic every year to help fund it”, noted Declan.

“We have continuously received great support in these fundraisers and they enable us to help out those less fortunate than ourselves each Christmas. I’d like also to thank the generous children and teachers in Realt na Mara and Colaiste Cú Chulainn who were a great help to us this year putting the hampers together”, he added. Despite the economic recession, the Lions Club managed to deliver 250 hampers, up from 230 last year. Thanking once again all the volunteers and those who contributed to the food appeal, Declan wished everybody a happy new year on behalf of the Dundalk Lions Club.

The outstanding female boxer has already claimed three leinster and three Irish titles in her short boxing career, and was honoured with an award that no other boxer from Louth has received before. Head coaches of the Irish boxing high performance unit Billy Walsh and Gerry Storey had commented on the young boxer saying, “she is one of the most talented female boxers in Ireland at the moment” and also remarking on her potential as a possible European, World or Olympic champion in

Man didn’t heed warning not to drive Vida Leisure Centre 6 month’s Membership from only €299

A man who was told by Gardai not to drive after a night out, didn’t heed the warning and minutes later arrested on suspicion of drink driving. A breath specimen showed that Chris Lawless of 18 Demesne Tce, Dundalk, was over the limit and when he appeared at Dundalk District Court he failed in a bid to have the charges dismissed on a technicality.

The court heard that on December 13, 2013, Mr Lawless was observed walking unsteadily towards a car on Dublin St. When the Garda told him not to drive, he stated that he was just getting something from the car. The Garda asked the patrol room to place cameras on the car as he had a suspicion that he would return. Soon after he received a call to say the car had been driven to Ram-

part Lane where he was arrested at 4.05am. Garda Hugh Jordan stated that while in the back of the patrol car he began the 20 minute period of observation, before samples were taken at the station at 4.31am and 4.34am. Solictor, Conor MacGuill, argued that it was unusual for the observation to be undertaken on the move and pointed out that effectively

the period of observation was only 15 minutes in the station. He added that the observation should start in the station. Gda Jordan stated that it was the most prudent course of action and that he had observed the defendant continually over the required period. Judge Flann Brennan said he was not granting the application to dismiss and stated that the only unusual feature of the case was that the ob-

server is a qualified operator of the machine. Usually it is another Garda independent of the arrest. The court heard that 33-year-old Mr Lawless works locally and that the loss of his licence would be an inconvenience to him. He had a previous conviction for no insurance in 2005. Judge Brennan imposed a three year disqualification and a €500 fine.

House prices on the rise in Co Louth By Paul Byrne

The latest report from property website daft.ie has shown that property prices in Louth have risen on average by 11.4% in 2014. The average selling price for a house in Co. Louth is now €170,634. Asking prices across the country fell by 1% during the final quarter of 2014, the first quarterly fall since mid-2013. The average asking price nationwide is now €193,000, compared to €171,000 a year ago and €378,000 at the peak.

The report details the wide variations on the cost of different property types in Louth. A one bedroom apartment now has an asking price of around €61,000, which is an increase of 7% on the same period last year. Meanwhile a two bedroom terraced house has an asking piece of €81,000, which is up by 10%. A typical three bed semi detached home in Louth will go on the market for an average €111,000, an increase of 9.5% on the 2013 prices. Four bedroomed bunga-

lows are also increasing in price across Louth, with the average asking price now set at around €235,000, a rise of 11%. At the top end of the market, asking price increases have also increased but only by a small percentage. A five bedroomed property will now go on the market for €271,000, a 1.9% rise on the previous year. Ronan Lyons the author of the Daft report claims that the 1% decrease in house prices in the final quarter of 2014 was mainly down to the Cen-

tral Banks proposed limits on mortgage lending. “Since the end of 2013, the expected change in house prices went from stable (0% in 2013Q4) to a 6% increase in 2014Q3, before falling back to less than 4% in 2014Q4. The fall-off in expectations in Dublin was even more dramatic”, explained Ronan. “In September, the typical respondent expected house prices to increase by 12% over the coming 12 months. By December, that had more than halved to just 5%”, he added.

“This is, of course, precisely the desired effect of Central Bank limits on mortgage lending: to ensure housing remains affordable. “This is done both by limiting expectations and by more formal links between house prices and incomes and/or savings. The other main aim of housing policy – abundant housing – is beyond the Central Bank’s remit and must be a priority for the Departments of Environment and Finance”, warned the Trinity college economist.

Cyclists back in action for New Year The old Dublin Road was the setting for local cycling’s annual New Year’s Eve Time Trial and a relatively mild day saw almost 25 riders sign on to tackle the 10 mile course that went out and back to Castlebellingham. The women’s race was dominated once again by Eve McCrystal, with a finishing time of 24:25. Eve was using the event as a tester before some track championships for the Para Olympics at the end of January. Rachel Withers of Adamstown Cycling Club was second in 31:30,

Couple both sped from Gardai in 15-minute spell A couple found themselves before Dundalk District Court after both were charged with dangerous driving within 15 minutes of each other. As a result Brendan Treanor and Charlene O’Callaghan, both of 33 Cortreasla Road, Crossmaglen, Co Armagh were fined €200 after being convicted of careless driving. Ms O’Callaghan (26), who is a hairdresser in Louth Village, and her unemployed boyfriend, also 26, denied the charges. The court heard that on August 29, 2014, Gardai on patrol on Castletown Road noticed a red Audi being driven by Mr Treanor pull out from a parking space at speed at 3.30pm. When they activated the lights in an attempt to get the driver to stop, Mr Treanor, who was not wearing a seatbelt, took off at high speed. The car, in which Ms

O’Callaghan was a passenger, drove on the wrong side of Legion Ave, forcing other cars to stop and at that stage the Gardai thought the driver would lose control, before they lost sight of the car. At 3.17pm the same Gardai saw the vehicle at Drumbilla, Kilcurry, this time being driven by Ms O’Callaghan, with Mr Treanor a passenger. The officers activated the lights but the car drove off at what was described as a dangerous speed towards the North, over-taking another car on a sharp bend. The stopped their pursuit when the speed reached 160kmph and the Garda described the driving as reckless and a danger to the public. Counsel for Brendan Treanor stated that his client denied speeding and that the lights on the patrol car were not activated. Mr Treanor said that on the date in question he had collected

his son from his mother’s house and that after the Gardai saw him pulling out, he returned to the house as he had forgotten a bag. He added that he was wearing a seatbelt at the time. It was at that time that Ms O’Callaghan had taken over driving. In evidence, Ms O’Callaghan stated that she wasn’t in the habit of speeding, and that she had a 10-month old child in the back seat. In making his ruling, Judge Flann Brennan, stated that he would convict in relation to all offences. “I have heard clear and definite evidence in relation to the incident and I find the evidence of the Gardai completely consistent. There is some consistency between the defendants but there is some inconsistency”, he stated. The defendants were also fined €100 for failing to stop for Gardai.

StudentS ready for young S Conor’s invention inspired by his aunt By Tamara O’Connell

A DUNDALK teenager who has developed a communication aid for people who are physically disabled is among the hopefuls competing at this year’s BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition. Fifth year Colaiste Ris student Conor Begley created the communication aid after he was inspired by his Aunt Fiona who has Cerebral Palsy. His project entitled: ‘Quick Com - A communication aid’ is a computer-based package comprised of both software and hardware components that helps the physically disabled to communicate using the latest technology. According to the 16-year-old, his method is user-friendly and inexpensive to build, unlike models that already exist. Using movements from the head, finger and eyebrow, Conor has developed an interactive package that will enable its user to communicate, browse the web, and read e-books. Grammar School investigate intercultural understanding

Bush project will make it easier to wake up By Tamara O’Connell

Zoha Khan, Penny Morris and Roisin Murphy

By Tamara O’Connell

THREE students who conducted an online survey about intercultural understanding in local schools have made it to the final of the 2015 BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition. Second year Dundalk Grammar School students Penny Morris, Zoha Khan and Roisin Murphy completed a project entitled ‘Intercultural Under-

standing in Primary and Post Primary Schools’. The team conducted an online survey of 451 pupils in four secondary schools and five primary schools in the Dundalk area. They also interviewed a number of teachers including principals and deputy principals for the project. The information was then collated by the team who drew several conclusions from the data.

FOUR projects being put forward by Bush Post Primary School have qualified for the final stage of the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition. Second year students in the Cooley peninsula school, Ava O’Shaughnessy and Deborah Malone, have entered a project which investigates if there is a link between intense training at a growth spurt age and injury at senior level GAA football. Meanwhile, Transition Year (TY) students Caoilinn Dunne, Lisa McCarragher and Chloe Finley have submitted a project which investigates speech patterns in children with Down’s Syndrome. Fellow TY students Adam Traynor and Conor Kenny have quali-

fied for the exhibition with a project entitled ‘Rise and Shine’. The pair have developed a device which opens bed-

room curtains in the morning to help sleepers wake up naturally. David Finnegan and Stephen Gartlan, also

TY students at Bush Post Primary School, are putting forward a project which examines Gael Scoileanna.

ScientiSt of the year Martin aims to improve the waiting time in rugby

By Paul Byrne

THE De La Salle have always been keen supporters of the BT Young Scientists Exhibition and they will be represented again this week in Dublin as Second Year student Martin O Donnachadha shows off his wearable TMO system. Martin, a keen rugby fan, came up with the idea of developing a smartphone TMO app having got frustrated at the length of time it took the current system to reach a decision. A TMO or television match offi-

cial is currently used to assist the referee in determining whether points have been scored in top level rugby. Martin was keen to develop a system which delivered a verdict quicker and at a fraction of the cost. “I love watching rugby on television but it frustrates me a bit when a referee calls for help from his TMO and it takes up to two or three minutes for them to reach a decision. I decided to try and develop an app for a smartphone which can deliver a verdict much quicker and at a fraction of

the cost”, explained Martin. “The system is ready to go and it involves the referee strapping a smartphone to his wrist and wearing a small camera on his head. All he has to do is press the TMO app button and he will be informed immediately if the player has scored or not. “I’ve been working on it since August and I’m delighted that it’s finished and I’m looking forward to bringing it up to the Young Scientists Exhibition this week”, added Martin. Students ready for Young Scientist of the Year

Students aim to keep doctor away By Paul Byrne

Laura McGahon and Molly McShane from O Fiaich College in Dundalk are examining the old adage, an apple a day keeps the doctor away for the 51st BT Young Scientist & Technology Competition which takes place in the RDS, Dublin between Wednesday January 7 and Saturday January 10. Apples are the richest sources of malic acid which is known for its ability to increase energy and tolerance to exercise. They suggest that the maturity of apples after harvest has an effect on the amount of malic acid, sugar and starch found in apples. Laura and Molly found malic acid and sugar content increased over the course of five weeks in apples while starch level decreased. They found participants in their experiments showed marked increases in energy and stamina when consuming apples that had matured over a fiveweek period. The malic acid found in apples is often taken as a supplement, especially for the treatment of pain and chronic fatigue syndrome. Laura and Molly are hoping their research will be of use to fruit juice manufacturers so that healthier fruit drinks can be produced. Kenneth Rea, a science teacher in O Fiaich college, outlined the importance of the Young Scientist Exhibition and wished his students

“The BT Young Scientists and Technology Competition teaches students the ultimate answer to the most often asked student question: “Why do I need to learn this stuff, anyway?” It integrates, into one functional activity, virtually all of the skills and arts that are usually taught separately, sometimes not at all or without obvious “purpose” in many schools”, explained Kenneth. “At the conclusion of the competition students become more mature, self-confident, skilled, and competitive young leaders who have career goals and the preparation, discipline, and drive to attain them”, he added.

St Vincents maintain their strong tradition

ST VINCENT’S secondary school students will again make the trip to Dublin for the Young Scientists exhibition as they look to emulate last year’s remarkable success when they came home with four awards. Rachael Ni Donnachada wowed judges last year with her analysis into the effects of wrist rotation and elbow flair on a punches velocity which was awarded second place in the intermediate individual category. She returns this year hoping to go one better with her own invention which she calls a ‘Brap’. The Brap is a boxer’s hand wrap which helps prevent wrist injury in boxing. St Vincent’s have four projects in total travelling to Dublin this week with three groups joining Rachael in Dublin. First up will be Ciara McLoughlin, Aoife O’Malley and Aoife McLoughlin who will be looking to impress

the judges with their investigation into (A) Symmetry of Sycamore tree, Acer pseudoplatanus ‘helicopter’ seeds and it’s effect of dispersal distances. Caoimhe McEvoyWarr, Ciara Babington and Amy McArdle have been busy investigating whether or not cheap

sunglasses really protect your eyes against UVA, UVB and HEV? Also, the trio of Alexandria Smyth, Hannah Mc Givern and Anna Turley will present a statistical analysis of student’s interpretation of data presented in different graphical forms to judges.

Dundalk Rugby Club maintained their lead at the top of the Leinster League with a comprehensive 36-5 win over Suttonians on Saturday. Fresh from their All-Ireland semi-final win, the Mill Road side were in fine form from the outset and crossed the line early on through Ultan Murphy. Jonathan Williams, James Shields and Derek Williams followed with further tries to complete a comfortable win. I think it may be a good idea for Gardaí to visit schools and talk to the children and let them know that they should never talk to strangers or get into any strange cars.Obviously it’s up to us as parents to get that message across as well but I don’t think it would do any harm to reinforce the point by sending Gardaí around to schools to educate the kids” ,noted Kevin. Many events planned to celebrate St Brigid

A major celebration of St Brigid of Faughart will take place at the end of this month, from Thursday January to Sunday February 1. Now in its eighth year, the festival celebrates St Brigid of Faughart as both Christian Saint and as Pre-Christian Goddess and the ancient festival of Imbolc, which heralded the beginning of Spring in the Celtic year. The emphasis of this unique festival, according to its organisers, is to revisit and reclaim some of the richness of the traditions associated with St Brigid of Faughart, in ways which are relevant to our lives in the 21st Century, through myth, landscape, folklore, spiritual customs, poetry, music and dance. The festival takes place in Faughart, Dundalk and Ravensdale and includes a range of workshops and talks, as well as St. Brigid’s Cross and Crios Making, a Special Eucharist for St. Brigid’s Day, Bach Flower Dances, Pilgrimage Walk from Dundalk to Faughart Shrine, an Exploration of the Sacred Sites of Faughart, a Day of Healing and a Ritual Celebration of Brigid and Imbolc. On Saturday night, January 31, the festival will hold its third ‘Weaving Brigid’s Magic’ event in Dundalk Gaol. This year’s special guests include Zoë Conway and John McIntyre, Tony Cuckson, Bee Smith, Seάn Bradley, Bernadette Smyth and Janice McCloskey. Renowned singer and musicologist Noirín Ní Riain will facilitate a very special workshop on Sunday February 1. No, I wouldn’t make any at my age but I think they are a good idea for people who want to make a positive change to their lives. The start of a new year is a good time to change bad habits in your life.

I used to always make New Years Resolution’s but I didn’t bother this year as I never ever manage to stick with them.

I think they are a waste of time for myself. I suppose if you drink or smoke or have any bad vices they’re a good idea but I don’t do any of that so I don’t bother with them.

THE Narrow Water Bridge project which had been shelved due to a shortfall in funding has been put back on the table as part of negotiations between the Irish and British governments. According to Louth Sinn Fein TD Gerry Adams, the Irish Government has renewed its commitment to the cross border project in its contribution to a financial package. “The Narrow Water Bridge is a hugely important infrastructure project that can provide jobs for a region in desperate need of them and a significant boost to the local economy,” he said. Mr Adams said he raised the issue during the recent political negotiations as part of the Stormont House Agreement. Fine Gael Senator Jim D’Arcy said that he spoke to An Taoiseach Enda Kenny about the Narrow Water Bridge plans on Monday, December 5. “The Government and Taoiseach have always been committed to Narrow Water Bridge and are looking at ways to fund the project,”

Artist’s impression of the new bridge

said Mr D’Arcy. “The issue was raised at the recent North-South talks and we are all working together to help move things forward.” Mr D’Arcy added: “The Irish Government previously stated that it supported the concept of Narrow Water Bridge in a 2014 communique and that has now been upgraded. “We are now committed to the provision of Narrow Water Bridge. The Taoiseach said that it is a very important project and it is important not to lose sight of it. “It has to be a joint decision between the Irish Government and the Northern Ireland Executive.

“Previously, there were political difficulties north of the border but those seem to have been resolved. The Stormont talks seem to have moved it on a bit”, he explained. The proposed Narrow Water Bridge to link Co Louth with Co Down was put on hold in 2013 after tenders received from construction companies for the project ran substantially above the allocated budget. Tenders received ranged from €26m to €40m plus VAT. The project had secured funding of approximately €17.4m from the INTERREG IVA programme administered by the Special EU Programmes Body

(SEUPB). However, the EU programme withdrew the pledged funding after the tender process as time restraints require the EU money be spent before 2015. In November 2013, the Department of Transport said the Government had indicated it would be willing to address the funding shortfall but this would depend on matching contributions from other parties including the Northern Ireland Executive. The proposed Narrow Water Bridge would connect Cornamucklagh near Omeath, Co Louth with Narrow Water near Warrenpoint, Co Down.

Siobhan’s recovery inspired by children By Tamara O’Connell

A LOUTH mother who learned to walk again after suffering injuries and a stroke following a car crash has been honoured by the Irish Heart Foundation (IHF). Siobhan Leonard from Dunleer was just 32 years old when she was involved in a car crash with another vehicle in 2013. She was left with two broken legs, a broken arm, and a broken neck and also suffered a stroke as a result of the collision. Inspired and motivated by her two children, Christopher (14) and Aoife, aged eight, the young mum has since battled her way back to mobility. Brave Siobhan was initially under maximum dependency when she first started on her road to rehabilitation but today, she can walk again, only using the aid of a stick some of the time. “When the crash first happened the doctors didn’t make any promises about my recovery. In some ways I think I’ve shocked them with my recovery”, said Siobhan. “Physically and mentally it was very hard but I did it for the kids. They motivated me to keep going.

Siobhan Leonard pictured with her husband Ben, and children Christopher and Aoife.

“In the early days even just sitting up was a huge achievement. Then I worked on standing up for ten seconds and moved on to 20 seconds. It was a very slow process”, she explained. “I was able to go home after four months but it wasn’t until six or eight months after the crash that I felt I was going to get back to what I used to be like before the

accident. “I still have a bit of pain and have to use a crutch some days but on the whole I’m back to my old self. It really makes you appreciate how fragile life is”, she continued. Siobhan was one of 12 stroke survivors whose achievements were celebrated by the IHF at its annual Life After Stroke

Awards. “It was nice to have all my hard work recognised but I was really delighted for all the doctors and nurses at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital. The work they do is amazing and I’m so grateful to all of them for their help and support,” she said. “It was the doctors and nurses who put forward my nomination and to be honest I didn’t think it would go anywhere so it was a real surprise when I heard I had won the award.” Among this year’s award presentations, 11 recipients were under the age of 65 years, a mix of both male and female, with the youngest inspirational stroke survivor aged just six years old. IHF Chief Executive Barry Dempsey said: “A stroke can happen at any age and our annual Life After Stroke Awards provides a unique opportunity to share incredible stories of unsung stroke heroes living in every corner of Ireland. “Every day small miracles happen and our 12 award winners represent the heroic efforts of all the stroke survivors, families and carers nationwide who are dealing with this illness.”

Woman attempted to strike Garda A woman who shouted abuse at Gardai before attempting to strike an officer promised never to repeat her behaviour when she appeared at Dundalk District Court. Aideen McNulty of 41A Traynors

Crescent, Crossmaglen, admitted a public order charge arising out of an incident on May 17 this year. The court heard that on that date the defendant was in a car at Dowdallshill when she began shouting

abuse at Gardai. She left the car and walked to the rear and tried to strike a Garda but missed. When she was arrested she gave false details but later gave the correct information. Defence solicitor stated that the

30-year-old mother of a nine-yearold apologised for the behaviour which was out of character. It was added that she has so much drink taken she didn’t know what was going on.

The solicitor added that the defendant had no reason to be vindictive to Gardai and stated that it would not happen again. Judge Flann Brennan found the facts proven and dismissed the case.

the new mazda 3

The all-new Mazda3 has scored five-stars in the 2013/2014 Euro NCAP Tests. It scored 93 per cent for adult occupancy and 86 per cent for child occupant protection and 81 per cent for safety assist, which is a marked increase over the outgoing model. It compares to the five-star rated Ford Focus tested in 2012, which scored 92 per cent adult, 82% child and 71% safety assist. The Mazda3 comes with an impact-absorbing lightweight SKYACTIV-Body and SKYACTIV-Chassis. Around 60 per cent of the body is made from high and ultra-high tensile steels. That’s up from 50 per cent in its predecessor, making

the all-new Mazda3’s lighter yet some 30 per cent stiffer than the previous model. This has helped to improve passive safety protection, which is back up by a range of sensor-based active safety equipment and technology. At the time of launch there

will be a 36-model line up featuring five trim levels (‘SE’, ‘SE Nav’, ‘SE-L’, ‘SE-L Nav’ and ‘Sport Nav’), with 21 hatchbacks (including eight diesel models) and 15 Fastbacks, (five with diesel power), including 13 models with automatic transmission.

alloy wheels, sports suspension, LED lighting, XDS+ with ESC Sport (electronic stability control). You can specify your Polo GTI with the Sport Performance Pack which comes with Dynamic Chassis Control which offers sharper steering, accelerator responses – and more raucous engine noise from inside the car.
