The Irish Nurses and Midwives (INMO) Association last week called for Louth’s only Emergency Department (ED) in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda, to be taken off call for a period of up to 48 hours due to overcrowding. The call came on Friday morning when it was reported that the emergency department was dangerously overcrowded. There were 40 admitted patients on trolleys on Friday morning and 15 people on trolleys on the Medical Assessment Unit. The 55 patients were awaiting an in-patient bed resulting in inhumane and degrading conditions for both patients
and staff said the INMO. There were 29 clinically discharged patients in the hospital that could not be discharged due to the unavailability of community beds or services. The HSE confirmed that due to the ‘exceptionally busy’ time the ED has been experiencing “hospital management invoked the hospitals full escalation protocol on July 31.” In a statement this week a HSE spokesperson said “Staff are working with senior clinicians to utilise all resources effectively. This means that the most critically ill patients are prioritised for treatment and available beds. As a result some patients may experience delays Continued on Page 2

Tesco Extra opens its doors to over 20,000 customers weather, our fresh counter, bakery and clothing sections were exceptionally busy.” As well as the Tesco store, the new centre also includes former Dundalk Shopping Centre tenants Hickey’s Pharmacy and Traynor’s Butchers. There is also a Costa Coffee outlet, a barbers and clothes shop with a new restaurant opening in the near future. Work on the revamped shopping centre began just before Christmas with the old shopping centre finally closing its doors on December 8 before it was demolished. The official opening of the Tesco Extra store is due to take place today (Thursday) at 11am.
The old shopping centre became the new shopping centre last Saturday as the Tesco Extra megastore opened its doors on Saturday morning. Crowds flocked to the brand new centre with more than 20,000 Dundalk shoppers passing through the doors over the weekend. With Dundalk’s population standing at about 40,000 it was no exaggeration when people said ‘half the town was in it.’ Brian Farrell, store manager at Tesco Extra Dundalk said, “Our first weekend at Tesco Extra Dundalk exceeded all expectations with over 20,000 customers coming through the doors. the situation and it is being monitored on an hourly basis.” “Louth Meath Hospital Group actively liaise with colleagues in the Community Services to expedite the transfer of patients awaiting rehab and step down care. “ On Friday morning INMO Industrial Relations Officer Tony Fitzpatrick said “The INMO is calling for Our Lady of Lourdes hospital to be taken off call immediately. All ambulances should be diverted for a 48 hour period in order to treat patients already admitted to the hospital. We are also calling for an immediate cap to be placed on the number of patients who can be looked after within
the ED including the number of patients on trolleys.” The pressure has been building in the Drogheda ED over the past few weeks as trolley watch indicated the wait time on trolleys has been steadily increasing. The INMO said that the department is extremely understaffed and that management accept that there is a deficit of 10 WTE nursing staff within the department. They also pointed to a shortage of basic equipment such as thermometers and blood pressure monitoring equipment which was
adding to the pressure on staff and impacting on patient safety and care. INMO members say they are concerned for the safety and well-being of their colleagues who begin each shift short staffed and under extreme pressure. Mr Fitzpatrick also said that “You simply cannot keep the doors open when the emergency department is so overcrowded. Patients are lying on trolleys in corridors with no privacy. A key difficulty is the inability of hospital management to ensure that there are appropriately qualified
ED nurses available to care for patients. Patient safety and staff’s health and well-being are being compromised.” The HSE spokesperson said they encourage patients to contact their GP in the first instance and advises the Minor Injuries Unit at Louth County Hospital Dundalk is open from 9am to 8pm daily and is a suitable service for those who have a minor injury “Hospital Management wish to acknowledge the hard work, commitment and dedication of all staff at this time.”
CBOI for Carnegie Hall From Page 1 and at some of Ireland’s premier venues. Sharon Treacy-Dunne, CBOI’s founding director, said that Megan’s humble personality and command over her stunning voice made her a truly deserving winner. “Megan was exceptional,” said Mrs TreacyDunne. “She had the unique ability to both communicate with the audience and keep them thoroughly entertained.” Sharon went on to say that the north-eastern region provided some sensational performers and instrumentalists.
One act in particular that was said to have incredible stage presence was Sarah Reel, a young dancer from Kilcurry, Co Louth. All of the competing artists gave outstanding performances and made for an exciting and dynamic competition. CBOI launched their search back in March, naming their talent contest ‘The Soloist’. The competition, which was open to performers aged between 18 and 23, managed to draw in hundreds of enthusiastic virtuosos, all of which were eager to display their various talents. After such a thrilling
competition, young Megan will now begin an entirely new journey towards performing in front of 40,000 people across New York and Ireland.

Renewed appeals over hit and run tragedy Louth Village have reissued an appeal for the information on the tragic death of Keith Byrne who was knocked down close to his home in May. The 35-yearold was found beside the road at Carnalogue in Louth, Co Louth in the early hours of May 11. He is believed to have been struck by a vehicle while walking home from a night out. He was discovered by a taxi driver only meters from his house, his father was called to identify him and five days later his funeral was held. His family, the community and
Gardai have appealed directly to the driver to come forward. The community in Louth Village set up a fund and are offering a substantial reward for information which leads to the conviction. His siblings Niamh and John told Crimecall that knowing someone out there knows what happened and won’t come forward makes coping with Keith’s death harder. They hope that knowing what happened will help the family better handle the tragedy. Gardai said if the driver of the vehicle does come forward that
they will be treated sensitively. The investigation is ongoing and Gardaí are continuing to review CCTV from the area in the hope of developing the events of the night. To help this investigation they are appealing to motorists who were in the area of Channonrock, Carnalogue and Monavallet between the 4.20am and 4.50am to come forward. But they are also appealing to anyone with information on Keith death to contact Ardee Garda Station on 041 6553222 or the confidential Garda line on 1800 666 111.

The 24 hour event is expected to attract hundreds of participants, all of whom are eager to show their support for the Irish Cancer Society. Plenty of other exciting activities will be available throughout the day to create a wonderfully festive atmosphere for all of those involved. Twelve teams have already been confirmed for this year’s event with 14 waiting to make a final decision. Participants are encouraged to re-create the style of their favourite fictional characters such as brawny superheroes or, if you really want to stand up to

Community work Tom to take part in World Equestrian Games for shop damage A man who caused €680 worth of damage to goods in a shop after he let off a fire extinguisher asked for an opportunity to prove his remorse by doing work within the community. Michael Murden of 529 Ashling Park, Cox’s Demsene, Dundalk, who has a number of previous convictions, was told that he faces a lengthy prison sentence after pleading guilty to a criminal damage charge and theft charges. Judge William Hamill agreed to adjourn the case to August 7 for a Community Service Report but stated that he was considering a custodial sentence. Dundalk District Court heard that on July 13 this year, Gardai were called to the Maxol Filling Station where a man was causing a disturbance. The defendant had caused €680 worth of damage after letting off a fire extinguisher, while the cost of the clean-up was €350. Replacing the fire extinguisher brought the total from the incident up to €1,250. No compensation was paid. On the same date, Mr Murden stole beer to the value of €53 and €13.79 from the shop. He also pleaded guilty to stealing alcohol valued at €48 from Londis on the Castletown Road on June 28. On April 23 this year he took 12 cans of beer from Maxol, Castletown Road, valued at €17. Solicitor, Peter Lavery, stated that his client has a problem with drink but had presented himself to Gardai in relation to these offences as he realises he is on the wrong path. “He is ashamed of what he has done as he knows the owner of the Maxol garage. He wants to get counselling and change his ways, as when he is sober he is reasonable to talk to”, stated Mr Lavery.“He accepts that what is doing is wrong and he wants a chance to show he is sorry by doing work in the community”, added the solicitor.
On August 28th, Horseware MD, Tom MacGuinness, will contest his first World Equestrian Games (WEG), in Normandy, France, as one of only two Irish competitors in the 160km Endurance Championship. Endurance is a long-distance race over 160 km, a one-day “marathon” completed by a horse and rider. This sport takes place in the middle of the countryside, on a course that contains less than 10% hard-surface roads. Tom only took up the gruelling sport of endurance less than two years ago having previously enjoyed success in eventing, show jumping and polo which makes his qualification for the World Equestrian Games all the more remarkable.
Tom McGuinness, Artista with a member of the support crew
According to the man himself he came up with the ‘crazy idea’ less than two years ago having seen an event take place in Dubai. “I have a friend in Uruguay who is a vet and he just happens to be one of the best endurance trainers in South America. Whilst talking to
him I had the crazy idea that I should take up the sport with the ultimate aim being to qualify for the World Equestrian Games this year. So I bought two very good horses and I started on my journey,” explained Tom. “I fell in love with the sport instantly and thankfully I
made pretty good strides with a second place in the PanAmerican games in Uruguay as well as a series of good performances in races from 80km right up to 160km. Those results meant I shot up the world rankings into the top 200 and ensured I qualified for the games next month,” he added. Tom is one of just two Irishmen who have qualified for the games and when he takes part in the endurance event he will come up against the world’s best endurance combinations from nations such as the UAE, Uruguay and France. Tom insists he is not just there to make up the numbers and is hopeful of being very competitive with a top 20 finish achievable in his eyes.
“The past year has been one of intensive training, both at home in Dundalk and in Uruguay where my trainer and horses have been based over the winter. Endurance is a hugely popular sport around the world, and is small but growing here in Ireland. With two of us competing at WEG, I hope we can raise the profile of what is an incredibly enjoyable sport,” noted Tom. The welfare of the horse is a huge part of the endurance race and riders must ensure that the horse is in perfect physical condition. Compulsory veterinary checks are carried out throughout the course and, if there is any doubt about the horse’s health (exhaustion, lameness, dehydration, etc.), the pair are disqualified.
Business is ‘Vooming’ in Katie’s new venture By Caoimhe Duffy
After ten successful years trading in Dundalk, the owners of Heaven Boutique have decided to close their doors and operate their online retail site Va Va Voom fulltime. The decision to make such a daunting transition came following a surge in demand for their stock online.
Despite being excited about her new business venture, Kate King of Heaven Boutique admits that she’ll miss the natter and general craic she had from day to day in her Dundalk store. “I’ve always found Dundalk people to be very loyal to business owners,” said Kate. “As someone who started
out as an independent trader, it meant a lot to see so many familiar faces come back into the store for a new dress or blouse”. She continued to say that her customers’ invaluable loyalty gave her confidence in her own abilities as a retailer. To show their gratitude, Va Va Voom are now offering the
“Click an Collect” service to Dundalk customers, a simple, counterintuitive concept that is gradually reforming highstreet shopping. By entering “Collect” at the checkout, customers can then pick up their purchases at the Va Va Voom premises at Unit 3A, Blackthorn Business Park, Coes Rd, Dundalk and have their delivery charge
waivered. Kate, who manages the store along with her husband Patrick and her dedicated staff, added that she will miss all of the fun and endless gossip her customers brought. “Dundalk people have given us so much over the years and we hope that we’ll see them all again in the near future.”

Ifa seeks reduction in property tax from Local Authorities In a submission to Louth Co Council, Louth IFA Chairman, Matthew McGreehan, has sought a reduction in the property tax to reflect the level of services provided and to ensure that there is no further erosion of competitiveness and loss of income for farm families. Matthew said, “The purpose of the property tax is to support the provision of local services, with the majority of the proceeds of the tax accruing to local authorities. While this should provide more autonomy to local authorities to provide appropriate
services, there can be no change in the rate of the tax to compensate for a reduction, or lack of funding from other sources”. He continued, “IFA believes that the local property tax must reflect the level of local services provided, which are significantly lower in rural Ireland than those provided in urban areas. There is a strong argument, therefore, for a reduction in the property tax to reflect the lower level of services provided in rural areas.” He concluded, “In addition, the burden of taxation on farm families
has, in common with other sectors, increased significantly in recent years. Marginal rates of tax are at a very high level and lower income farmers have been negatively affected through the introduction of the USC and the reduction in personal tax credits. Increases in the rates of capital taxes and reductions in tax-free thresholds have added to the costs of investment and asset transfer. To encourage investment and enterprise and to support overall economic recovery, there must be a reduction in the overall taxation burden and I

am calling on Louth Co Council to reduce the property tax next year”. On Monday 28 of July Louth IFA held their County Executive Meeting in Darver Castle in which Ciarán Kinney from Louth County Council was in attendance. He delivered an informative talk to farmers in which he discussed issues such as farm inspections, burning dates, storage and spreading of slurry and other important issues. While there is no meeting in August, the Louth IFA will still be dealing with any issues farmers may have.

A seven-year-old boy from Dundalk was so moved by what he saw happening to children his own age in Gaza that he asked to attend the solidarity protest in Dundalk. As a result, Conor Magennis proudly stood beside his father Paddy and his grandparents and little sister. Unfortunately, over the weekend he fell and injured his leg
and has been confined to the house and to bed. However, it didn’t take long for the innovative little boy to come up with a plan to occupy himself. Conor is now spending his time making special ‘Gaza Loom Band Bracelets’ which he intends to sell to raise funds. “I am going to sell them for whatever anybody wants to pay me. Then when I get all the
money, I am going to buy books and pencils for the children in Gaza to bring to school.” His father Paddy said “I’m so proud of him, he is just seven years old and this is all his own idea.” You can get one of Conor’s special ‘Gaza Loom Band Bracelets’ for a donation at Gerry Adams TD’s office in Crowe Street.

MMA Team Torres see success Found in possession of heroin at UXC Fight Night in Belfast A man who was arrested by Gardai after he admitted being in possession of €2,000 worth of heroin, was discovered two weeks later with over €400 of the same drug when searched by officers. As a result, Joseph Bailey of Grange Drive, Muirhevnamor, pleaded guilty to two charges of drugs possession and two charges of possession for sale or supply when he appeared at Dundalk District court
where he was sentenced to a total of 15 months in prison. The court heard that on August 1, 2012, Gardai stopped the defendant near Greenacres Shopping Centre and when he was taken to the station he was found to have heroin valued at €2,001.75 which he admitted owning. On August 11, Gardai encountered the defendant at Greenacres and again he was found to be in possession of
drugs, this time valued at €416. He admitted having the drugs to sell. Judge William Hamill remarked that after being arrested on one charge, he had committed a similar offence less than two weeks later as he imposed consecutive sentences of ten months and five months. Solicitor, Conor MacGuill, stated that the father of three had been in custody since February 4 and although he was in bad shape
Church of Ireland welcomes new Rector, Rev. Walmsley Niall Wilson Submitting his opponent via Rear Naked Choke
Dundalk’s MMA fighter Niall Wilson was action over the bank holiday weekend in UXC Fight Night.’ Niall is a member of Team Torres who train locally in Mixed Martial Arts for self-defense. “Niall worked the psychology of the fight from the get go by wearing his BJJ Gi on the walk in to the ring and staring menacingly at his opponent in the hope of intimidating and unsettling him. From the bell sound-
ing the beginning of round one, Niall pressed his opponent, dominating him in the stand up, landing barrages of heavy punches, kicks and knees and taking him down with ease, and after some ground and pound his opponent gave up his back in an attempt to escape the onslaught and was submitted with a classic Rear Naked Choke with only just over two minutes gone on the clock,” said Martin, Team Torres’s spokesperson.
It was not to be team-mate Aaron Devlin’s night. Despite a gutsy performance by Devlin, where he took his opponent down several times and appeared to be dominating the ground game the fight was stopped by the referee in the first round. Head Coach Sebastiao Torres said it takes a lot of courage to compete in MMA and that he is very proud of the two men.
Reverend Geoffrey Walmsley thanked the kind people of Dundalk for a very warm welcome as he was introduced to parishioners in St Nicholas’ church on Tuesday evening. As the new rector in Dundalk, Reverend Walmsley succeeds the Very Reverend Sandra Pragnell who left Dundalk in 2012 to become the Dean of Limerick. Reverend Walmsley
who is originally from Kilkeel in Co. Down moves to Dundalk having spent the last nine years as pastor in Banbridge. Yesterday he thanked the people of Dundalk for extending a warm welcome to him and his family. “We had a great night on Tuesday evening in St Nicholas Church and I would like to thank everybody for their kind
words and for making me and my family feel welcome. “We moved into the rectory on Monday and we are just getting settled in now,” noted the Reverend. “I look forward to meeting with and speaking to the parishioners here in Dundalk and getting to know the lay of the town” added the Reverend.
when he went in, he had made good use of his time and was making progress. He added that the previous day he had been given a two-and-ahalf-year sentence with the final 18 months suspended. He asked that the sentence be back-dated to February 4, but Judge William Hamill stated that he was not prepared to do that. Mr MacGuill asked for recognisances to be fixed for an appeal.

Soldiers honoured on the Centenary of WW1 The centenary of the First World War was commemorated over the bank holiday weekend with dignitaries from across the globe paying homage to those who died in the Great War. Men from across Co Louth joined the conflict, many in the Royal Irish Fusiliers, with more than 1,000 from Dundalk alone, 280 from Ardee and more than 70 from Co Louth’s towns and villages. It is estimated that more than 2,000 people from Co Louth fought in the war but as historians re-examine the period the numbers grow. 60 names from the Australian forcers were added recently and about 100
people from Co Louth who fought with the Canadian forces were also added. It is estimated that about 800 men died. Candle lit vigils were organised around Ireland and people were asked to honour the dead by turning their lights off for an hour at 11pm and leaving one candle burning. Much of the local history relating to the men who fought in WW1 was preserved by Donal Hall in The Unreturned Army: County Louth Servicemen in the Great War. The collection of information the local WW1 volunteers is evolving and anyone with information that could be
added is asked to contact Mr Hall by email on Louthgreatwar@gmail.com. Earlier this year the community in Ardee honoured those who went to fight in Europe with the erection of a monument designed by a local woman and adorned with a poem by Co Louth native Frances Ledwidge. The monument which stands in Ardee’s Fair Green was unveiled in May. A memorial mass took place in Dublin over the weekend where Archbishop Diarmuid Martin said that we should “remember the idealism and the valour and the courage of those who served in that war.”

Case dismissed against man arrested for planning burglary A Dublin man was arrested by Gardai who suspected he may have been intent on carrying out a burglary after he was found with a pair of socks in his back pockets and in the company of a man with a screwdriver. Daniel O’Reilly of Kiltalown Road, Tallaght, appeared at Dundalk District Court charged with
being in possession of knives and other articles, but had the case against him dismissed after Judge William Hamill ruled that there was not enough evidence to support a conviction. Dundalk District Court stated that on 9.05pm on June 29, 2012, Gardai received a call in relation to two men acting suspiciously
on St Alphonsus Road. Dt Gda Joe Ryan stated that on arrival he saw one of the men, who was not before the court, put two items in a hedge. He then discovered a pair of socks with a screwdriver inside. The other man was stopped by Gda Sean Finnegan and found to have a sock in each of his back

pockets, and it was believed that the items were to be used in connection with a burglary. The men, said they were in Dundalk for a football match, and evidence was given that Dundalk FC were playing Sligo Rovers on that night and the match was in progress at the time. Solicitor, Conor MacGuill, ar-
gued that there was no evidence against his client except that he had socks. He added that while Dt Gda Ryan gave evidence of the other man having a screwdriver, he didn’t try to create a common design between the two men. Insp Martin Beggy stated that Gardai were acting on a report of suspicious activity and that as a
result of a joint inquiry, the articles were found. He accepted that it might not have been the most hi-tech equipment that might be used in a burglary, but that was the Garda view based on experience. After a brief adjournment, Judge Hamill, ruled that the evidence was not strong enough to support a conviction.

ack to School can be a more financially pressured time than Christmas with books, uniforms, stationary and fees heaped to make it an expensive time of year. But there are reliefs for families available: as well as schools working to cut costs for families and the expansion of the school book rental scheme families can apply for the Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance. (BTSCFA) The allowance, applications for which opened on June 1, is designed to help families meet the costs of the required school uniform. In some cases the BTSCFA will be automatically paid to families with children under 18 years of age,
which means they will to have to make a formal application. A letter detailing when the payment will be made will be sent from the Department of Social Protection and should have been received by June 13. If the letter has not been received, an application will have to be made. To be entitled to the Allowance the parents or guardians must meet certain criteria. They must be in receipt of some form of social welfare payments or in training or adult education. The children must be aged between 4 and 17 before September 30, or for second level between 18 and 22. There have been cuts made in the BTSCFA

Country-wide success for Dundalk tennis
Dundalk Tennis stole the show again last week with an abundance of strong performances at junior, national and international levels in competitions throughout Ireland. The Windsor tennis club, in Belfast hosted the second week of the Junior ITF Tennis Championships and Dundalk Tennis Club once again had players competing and searching for world ranking points. Having achieved her first world ranking points last week, Aoife Tonna Barthet was determined to capitalise on her milestone and dispatched her opponents to make it to the semi-final. Aoife now goes into the Junior World rankings at #1290 and with one more left as an under 18 Junior, she has the next season to build on her World Ranking.
Ruth Copas who had made the quarter finals at last years junior ITF lost out in the first round of the Windsor junior . Elsewhere Daniel Mullen who was a wild card in the main draw of the Tennis Europe event faced Wojtek Szczesny from Poland in the DCU event. He got his first international ranking Daniel and his doubles partner Sean Foran excelled in the final of the Tennis Europe event making it to the finals but being defeated at the last hurdle. Dundalk had an abundance of tennis players competing at all levels and age groups in the junior Belfast Ulster Tennis championships. In the under 12 section Amberlie Collins won the junior girls under 12 novice round robin section. In the under 18

Ruth Copas got straight back on the match court after her first round exit at Windosr Union International and recorded four successive wins. Two other tournaments saw Dundalk Tennis players take titles with Oisin Murtagh taking the Kilkenny Tennis Championship and also winning the doubles with Mark Griffin. Finally Anna Jones won the Lepoardstown Tennis Championships to put the cherry on top
for Dundalk Tennis. Performance tennis at Dundalk has been growing and developing over the past five years with a goal in mind to put Dundalk tennis on the map of Irish tennis and a club that can compete with bigger clubs in Dublin and throughout Ireland. The programme has not only developed in terms of performance and numbers but has now put itself in the forefront of Irish tennis. The model that McGahon has introduced to the club along with his dedicated team of coaches has helped produce six world ranked junior athletes, two national champions, a leinster grand prix champion, 22 leinster tennis representatives, 34 competitors at the national championships in Fitzwilliam, six junior interprovincial players.
David Lynch’s Lounge in Stabannon will be hosting a charity night in aid of St Brigid’s School, Dundalk on August 16. Organised by seasoned campaigners Pat Furey and Eddie Marmion, the event promises to be a great occasion for all involved. Over the last number of years, both men have raised thousands for a variety of different charities and causes close to their hearts. They are now wishing to raise much-needed funds for St Brigid’s in Dundalk, a co-educational school which provides exceptional children with a caring and secure atmosphere where they can grow and develop as individuals. Pat hopes that people will come to the event feeling generous and contribute whatever they can to a truly
worthy cause. Music on the night will be provided by Peter O’Hare, MC Brian McKeown, accordionist Gerry Burke and a host of other esteemed local musicians. There will also be a raffle held on the night with a wide range of sponsored prizes up for grabs. Eddie’s well known for his charitable efforts, particularly after her raised a staggering €65,000 for various charities with a compilation of music from local singers and instrumentalists called Cherished Memories. Although Pat and Eddie will be fundraising right up until Christmas, they hope to see many new and familiar faces on the night to help them in their efforts.
Diesel sludge dumped
A spate of diesel-sludge dumps took place around north Louth over the Bank Holiday weekend. The first of the bulk containers of the toxic diesel sludge was found late last week, dumped at Philipstown Mills Co. Louth. One of the containers was lying on its side and leaking. Later over the Bank Holiday weekend a further two containers were found at the side of the road at Dungooley Corner, Co. Louth. Three more were found on Sunday morning near the entrance to Stephenstown Pond in Knockbridge. One of the bulk containers was leaking. In each instance the contractors for Louth County Council were contacted and attended the scene.

Letters to the editor
This week we received a poem written by Sean Branigan.
Eastern Cross The Valley of Tears overflows, On blood-bleached stones, Streaming through hills of bones, Where babies once played. Seeds from the screaming sky Burst, burn, destroy, The garden of the human heart, Where joy used to grow. A hatred harvest sown, Death smoke chokes heaven, The Lord of War laughs. I kneel and pray and beg, A God who may have died, On some Eastern Cross, “Please let the Chalice pass”.

Narrow Water is a bridge too far By Caoimhe Duffy
Louth Fianna Fáil TD Seamus Kirk voiced his disappointment following the announcement that the Government does not intend to proceed with the Narrow Water Bridge Project. Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport Paschal Donohoe confirmed that the construction of the bridge will not go ahead as planned at a Parliamentary Question last week. While many attempts have been made to salvage the project, all plans to develop the bridge which would link Omeath and Warrenpoint now look to be in the water. Commenting on the mat-

Border business showcase before Scottish vote
Dundalk businesses are being held up as positive examples of how cross-border trading can operate. Last week a BBC news team exploring the implications of the Scottish Independence referendum visited ‘Black And White Living’ on the Coes Rd. There the team highlighted how they successfully trade in two jurisdictions. The news piece is due to air on ‘BBC Breakfast’, six o’clock and ten o’clock news during the week. The company’s Marketing Executive, Paula O’Reilly said that the showcase allowed for them to demonstrate how businesses can thrive by recognising their market and approaching the right collaborators. “This was a great opportunity for us to show Scottish business owners how strong cross border trading can be,” said Mrs O’Reilly. “We hope that they’ll be able to see that it has worked so effectively for us and that it can too work for them.”

Dundalk FC reach EA Sports Cup Final It’s the season that keeps on giving for delirious Dundalk supporters as their team demolished Wexford Youths to reach the final of the EA Sports Cup Final. Dundalk will play Shamrock Rovers in the final on September 20th after beating Wexford 5-0 a victory all the more impressive given the fact that manager Stephen Kenny rested his entire first eleven to give his squad players and youngsters an outing. Wexford proved no match for the Oriel Park outfit as the returning Keith Ward delighted the home fans with a man of the match performance which included a delightful chipped goal as well as two assists. Goals from Ward, Griffin, Mountney and two from McMillan eased Dundalk into their first league cup final since 1995. It has been an excellent week for Kenny’s all conquering lilywhites as they preceded Monday evening’s victory over Wexford with a crucial 2-1 win in Turners Cross against title rivals Cork City on Friday evening. Richie Towell gave Dundalk the lead in the first half as he notched his thirteenth goal of the season to give the league leaders a narrow half time lead. It looked as though Dundalk would have to settle for a point as Dennehy equalised in the 83rd minute. However centre half Brian Gartland continued his remarkable goalscoring form and was on hand to blast home his eighth goal of the season to send the away supporters into raptures. The victory sends Dundalk six points clear with eleven games to go and there is a growing belief amongst lilywhite supporters that a first league title since 1995 could very well be on the horizon. The EA Sports Cup Final will be held in Oriel Park on September 20 with a 5.45 pm kick-off.
Collecting Social Welfare
A man who pleaded guilty to collecting Social Welfare payments on behalf of his brother on three occasions, had the case against him adjourned to October 1 at Dundalk District Court. Solicitor for the defendant stated that he regretted his actions and intends to pay compensation.

Craobh Rua’s film project ‘Escape Plan’ hits the screen
Teens from both the North and the South of Ireland came together last Saturday to show their own beautifully produced films at the Táin Theatre in Dundalk. The four films offered entirely different insights into what postTroubles Ireland is truly like for young individuals. The Craobh Rua Youth Project, Muirhevnamor, Dundalk devised
one of the film productions, drawing up a poignant, thoughtprovoking piece of cinema. ‘Escape Plan’, which was written by Emmet Kirwan and directed by Colin Thornton, was said to have left a lasting impressing on the young audience. Sharp Focus, which is the overall initiative, was brought forward by the Calipo Theatre and Picture Company to give
De La Salle class of ’89 school reunion
In June 1989 the news headlines were dominated by the Tiananmen Square massacre and Charlie Haughey’s Fianna Fail party failing to win a majority in the General Election. All I want is You by U2 was top of the charts and Ross McEntegart and over a hundred of his fellow 6th year De La Salle students were sitting their leaving cert exams. Now Ross is aiming to get in contact with as many of that class of 89 as possible as he sets the wheels in motion for a De La Salle Class of 89 school reunion. Blackrock man Ross has set up a special email address for anybody who sat their leaving cert in the De La Salle in 1989 to contact him and let them know if they would like to attend what he hopes will be a memorable reunion. “It’s 25 years since the class of 89 sat our leaving cert and I thought it would be nice for us to organise a reunion and reminisce about our time in the school.”, explained Ross. “I had actually thought about doing one for our 20 year anniversary but between one thing or another it didn’t happen. So far I’ve got about 40 or 50 names saying they’d be interested but there’s a lot more who I have no contact details for so hopefully they’ll see this article and get in touch with me.” ,he added. “I’d guess that there were about 130 or so in my year so it would be great to get as many of them to come as possible. I like many others have fond memories of my time in the De La Salle and it would be nice for us all to meet up with some old faces who we have lost contact with over the years” ,noted Ross. Anybody from the class of 89 who is interested in attending the De La Salle reunion should send an email to dls89reunion@gmail.com.

Senator D’Arcy to supervise vote By Caoimhe Duffy
Fine Gael Senator, Jim D’Arcy has been appointed as a member of the Council of Europe committee monitoring team in the lead up to the Turkish Presidential Election on August 10. Senator D’Arcy’s position on the committee will be to ensure that the ethics and values which are enshrined in the European Convention on Human Rights are respected and adhered to by all member states. “I am very pleased to have been appointed to this committee,” said Senator D’Arcy in a recent press statement.
Senator Jim D’Arcy.
“Turkey is an applicant for EU membership and has a population of over 100 million
bers, I will be on the ground in the run up to and throughout the voting process”. The monitoring team will be expected to observe the elections and report back to the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly (PACE). Prior to the election, the committee will meet the three candidates separately on Friday, August 8. The Turkish presidential candidates are Mr. Ekmeleddin of the Republican People’s Party (CHP), Mr Selapeople so it is a very hattin Demirtas of the Peace and Democracy significant country.” “Alongside my fel- Party (BDP) and Prime low committee mem- Minister Recep Tayyip
Erdogan of the Justice and Development Party (AKP). Meetings with various members of civil society and the media are scheduled to take place on Saturday, August 9. During observation, Senator D’Arcy will be based in the Kurdish Region, close to Iraq. He will then travel from Ankara to Diyadbakir in Anatolia, the regional capital city of approximately 2 million people. Together with his Council of Europe Colleague Ms. Marietta Pourbaix- Lundin, Senator D’Arcy will observe the opening of
the polling stations, the voting process itself and the closure of all polling stations. He is then expected to attend a meeting with the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe ad hoc committee in Ankara and conclude his work in Turkey with a press conference. “It will be a busy time but a very worthwhile process and one I am pleased to be a part of,” said Senator D’Arcy. “The Council of Europe is all about human rights and democracy so it is important to see these values upheld and promoted.”
Academics and experts to attend Summer School
Local historian Anthony Russell will be giving a talk on one of Ireland’s most fascinating couples, John Mitchel and Jenny Verner, as part of the Thomas Darcy McGee Summer School in the Four Seasons Hotel in Carlingford. The third annual Summer School will be running from August 17-20 and will look at the life and times of notable characters through discussions from leading experts and academics. The keynote speaker will be McGee’s biographer, Professor David Wilson, who will delve into the history of this well regarded journalist, poet, and politician. The story of revolutionary John Mitchel and Jane ‘Jenny’ Verner will form the basis of Anthony Russell’s talk at the Thomas McGee Summer School. As Russell explains, “John Mitchel was a complex character. He and his wife, Jenny Verner, a ‘daughter’ of the Orange Ascendency, lived a life beyond the imagination of the most romantic novelist.” “Their story, their true story, is more adventurous, more ro-
mantic than the Quiet Man, Ryan’s Daughter, Titanic and, especially, Gone with the Wind. It involved elopement, rebellion, transportation to Australia, escape, the American Civil War and a final political victory in Ireland.” “When he died, the Freeman’s Journal commented that a ‘remarkable Irishman had been removed from the stage of Irish politics’. Even the unionist Irish Times, although critical, accorded to John Mitchel, ‘the most uprightness and sincerity of character’. “He was, ‘honest and sterling as steel – the possessor of rare intellectual gifts’.” John and Jenny’s whirlwind love affair will be one of the academic presentations at the Summer School this year which will run under the umbrella theme of D’Arcy McGee: The Famine in Ulster. If you would like to hear more about Mitchell and Verner and take part in the Darcy McGee Summer School more information is available via the website at www.dkit.ie/thomas-darcymcgee.

Best July on record for car sales
New car sales continue to grow in 2014 with a strong start to the 142 registration period. Sales in July (18,776) saw a 61% increase on the same month last year (11,620), the first year of the new dual registration plate. July 2014 was the best July on record for vehicle registrations. So far this year, 84,474 new cars have been sold, an increase of 30% (19,571) on 2013 and 10,000 more cars than were registered in the whole of last year. Commenting on the results, Alan Nolan, Director General SIMI, said: "We have to be positive about these figures, which are even stronger than we expected. When SIMI proposed the introduction of the split registration system, we predicted that it would give consumers and businesses a better choice in buying their new car midyear rather than during the busy first quarter.
We had hoped that if sales in the first quarter of the year were bad, the new plate would give a second chance for a recovery. Last year, July saved what had been a very poor
first half, due to the VRT and Road Tax increases. According to the results July 2013 represented 18% of the year to date registrations while this year it has grown
to over 22%. In the final year of the old system, 2012, July represented only 6% of the year to date registrations. Although delighted with the results Alan exercised
caution and urged the government not to do anything negative that could adversely affect the car industry in Ireland. “Although we are seeing
more business confidence and the outlook remains quite positive, the Industry still remains cautious. We are only at the beginning of a long recovery process, starting from a very low base, which makes the percentages look very high. In reality, there are still challenges, both in the availability of business finance and in the fragility of the market, which could easily be upset by any negative decisions in the budget or instability in the economy.” noted Alan. “So, the clear message to Government is not to do anything negative that could risk the additional €200 million collected this year and the potential for a further €150 million next year from new car sales. The prize for the Exchequer in supporting this recovery will be the potential to collect €1 billion from new car sales in two years time and this should not be endangered.” he urged.
