FOUR avid hillwalking enthusiasts from Dromiskin, County Louth recently set a new record by hiking to the top of the highest point in every county in Leinster in under 24 hours. The challenge, which took place on Saturday and Sunday June 14 and 15, was the brainchild of Michael Kinahan, an avid hillwalker who had previously completed such challenges as the Oxfam 100km Trailtrekker in the Mournes, but was looking to form the first ever team to take on the Leinster County Top Challenge. According to Michael the team were looking to try something different and when they found out nobody had attempted this particular chal-

RSA report shows dramatic decrease in road deaths in Louth Louth roads are amongst the safest in the country according to the latest report from the Road Safety Authority (RSA). 2013 seen a 75% reduction in road deaths in the County from the previous year with four deaths recorded last year compared to 7 in 2012. The figures buck the national trend which has seen an increase
in the total of road deaths for the first time since 2005. There were 190 deaths on our roads last year up 28 from the previous years total. However the figures in Louth continue to decrease and last years total of four deaths are the lowest since records began. Patrick McGee, Chief Superintendent in Droghe-
da has led the way in introducing a number of initiatives aimed to reduce fatalities on our roads. He was understandably pleased with the latest RSA figures but stressed that even one life lost is too many and urged people to continue to drive safely and be aware of dangers on the road. “First of all we have to
say that we’re delighted with the latest figures for Co. Louth as they show the initiatives we have introduced are working and the message is getting across.” noted the Chief Superintendent. “Road deaths don’t just impact on the immediate family, they also affect the wider community and we would obviously love to get
that figure down to zero deaths as one death on our roads is too many. Thankfully the road infrastructure is better now and people are aware of the dangers of using mobile phones or drinking whilst driving. “For the first six months of 2014 we’ve had one death which was the tragic case of Keith Byrne in Louth Village and we hope

Local sports clubs share in €1m grants windfall Louth sports clubs and associations have been allocated €1,054,444.00 under a Government capital grants scheme with Naomh Fionnbarra (€130,000), Na Piarsaigh (€120,000), St Mochtas (€100,000) and Dundalk Tennis Club (€100,000) the big winners. Fine Gael Minister Peter Fitzpatrick welcomed the county’s allocation which was the first round of sports capital funding
since 2012 and only the second round since 2008. Speaking after the announcement of the grants Deputy Fitzpatrick outlined the importance of the grants to local sports clubs and organisations. “The Sports Capital Programme aims to foster an integrated and planned approach to developing sports and physical recreation facilities throughout the country. In particular, its objectives are to assist voluntary and community organisations, national governing bodies (NGBs) of sport, local authorities and in some cases VECs and schools to develop high quality, safe, welldesigned, sustainable facilities in appropriate locations.”noted the former Louth GAA football manager. Hunterstown Rovers GFC €70,000, Ardee Archery Club €10,000, Collon Philipstown Boxing Club €4,000;, Rock Celtic €50,000, Geraldine’s GFC €28,000, O’Hanlon Park Boxing Club €22,000, Quay Celtic FC €21,000, Dealgan Boxing Club €12,000, Dundalk Town €8,000, Blackrock Sports and Recreation Community Group €6,000, Kilkerley Bad-
minton Club €500 were the other clubs in the Dundalk/Ardee area to benefit from the grants. Gerry O’Hare, chairman of Na Piarsaigh expressed his delight with the grant received by the Rock Road club and outlined what they intended to do with the money. “We were obviously very pleased that our application for a sports grant proved successful and it means we can now go ahead and get started on our plans to carry out work in our club grounds. We would be hopeful of getting started by the beginning of September”, noted Gerry. “We have been given planning permission to carry out extensions and alterations to our changing rooms where we will have a new recreation room, new dressing rooms and upgrade our facilities. We represent a large catchment area here in town and there are three schools close by that use our facilities so we are delighted that we can finally get started on this project. This will provide us with a focal point for our club and members and it’s in recognition for all the hard work put in by committee members over the
years”, explained Gerry. Meanwhile Dundalk Tennis Club president Damien Kenny spoke of the clubs plans to upgrade their tennis courts as they strive to make the Ramparts Road club a centre of excellence for the North East. “The club have made great strides over the last few years and we have a fantastic coaching set up in place at the moment with former Davis Cup player John McGahon and his team helping to nurture some very talented young players. With this money we plan on upgrading all our courts to bring them up to international standards. The aim is to make Dundalk Tennis Club a centre of excellence for the North East region and this will help us achieve that” explained Damien.
that we have no more this year. We again ask everybody out there to continue driving safely and not to put themselves or others at risk” urged Chief Superintendent McGee. Overall there has been a 44% reduction in fatalities since 2007, with the greatest drops seen in Clare (down 83%) and Louth (down 75%).

Dundalk fans enjoy trip to Luxembourg By Paul Byrne

European trips for Dundalk supporters have been something of a rarity in recent years so when the chance for an overseas adventure arrived, a band of loyal Lilywhite supporters were determined to make the most of their Europa Cup trip last Tuesday. Thanks to a second place finish last season Dundalk were in the draw for this season’s Europa Cup and when Luxembourg outfit Jeunese Esch were named as first round opponents supporters immediately started to look into the logistics of a trip abroad. Approximately 200 fans travelled to Luxembourg to watch Stephen Kenny’s league leaders in action and as lifelong Dundalk supporter Jackie Moran explains the trip was made all the more special thanks to a magnificent 2-0 victory for the Carrick Rd outfit. “We had a fantastic Page 2 trip over to Luxembourg
Jackie Moran, Niall Daly, Joe Coyle, Gavin Branigan, David Curran, David Duffy and Michael Conroy celebrating Dundalk’s win in Luxembourg
and it was topped off with a great 2-0 victory for Dundalk which leaves us in great shape to qualify for the next round” enthused Jackie. “I went over with six friends and we were out of our beds at 3:30 in the morning on the day of the match. We flew into Brussells airport and then got on a train for a three hour journey to Luxembourg. The buzz over there was brilliant and all the Dundalk fans met up in Luxembourg City before the match for a few drinks in the
sunshine. It’s been four years since Dundalk were last in Europe so we it was great to have it back again” he noted. There was approximately 200 Dundalk fans amongst the 759 in attendance and they were treated to yet another excellent Dundalk performance as a Richie Towell double gave them a huge advantage going into tomorrow evenings second leg in Oriel Park. A tie against Croatian giants Hadjuk Split awaits the winner of this tie and according to
Jackie a Dundalk victory would signal another summer trip for the Lilywhite army. “Hopefully we can finish the job on Thursday evening and start planning for the next game which will be in Croatia. The club have had a few years in the wilderness so it’s great to see the buzz back around the town and the excitement which a run in Europe can bring” added Jackie. Dundalk will look to complete the job against Jeunese Esch tomorrow in Oriel Park at 7.45pm.

Six of Dundalk’s finest charity campaigners offered up their heads in aid of the Irish Cancer Society last Wednesday night. The Bartender hosted the Today FM Shave or Dye event, providing endless food, drink and entertainment for all involved. This simple yet effective means of raising much needed funds for the Irish Cancer Society’s invaluable services has made over €6.1m since the campaign began in 2010. Before the main attraction, local bands The Beached Whales, @ ventures and The Seasons supplied music to a crowd brimming with energy. After some relentless hounding from supporters, Vincent Duffy, Mickey McKenna and Carrie-Ann McGuinness took to the barber’s chair one by one. Local hairdresser, Pamela Jordan, ensured that each gutsy participant was happy with their chosen fluorescent shades before putting her skills to the test. The initial levels of enthusiasm may have you guessing that they

had watched The Demon Barber of Fleet Street the previous night, but the occasion ended up playing out to the tune of laughter, heckling and general craic. Looking prayerful, Vincent Duffy of the Point Road, Dundalk opted to dye his silver locks a bold shade of pink while Mickey McKenna and CarrieAnn McGuinness decided to go for a somewhat less daring look. Next in the chair was Martin Finn of Mourne View, Dundalk who chatted happily throughout the ordeal. Ruth Agnew was another one of the brave players, opting to have the right side of her head shaved for the charity.
“We were so delighted with the turnout and amazed at everyone’s generosity,” said Síle Connolly, the owner of The Bartender and one of the key organisers of the event. Síle went on to say that it was Stephen Rudden’s incentive that made the event such a huge success. Stephen courageously decided to shave off his hair to support a cause that means an inordinate amount to him. Once he sat down in the dreaded chair, there was no turning back. Taking to the stage wearing a bright smile, Stephen had all of his hair shaved off in front of a warm and encouraging crowd.
After Stephen’s trial had finally ended, a raffle was held with prizes ranging from beer hampers to luxury leather purses. All of the prizes were sponsored by Irish businesses such as Tony McDonnell Menswear, Noreast Beers, Riva, The Barbershop and McGuinness’ Pharmacy. Not only did everyone display great spirit, but they managed to raise €1,000 on the night for an incredibly worthy cause. All of the heads involved are without doubt a huge inspiration and a testament to the countless community figures partaking in fundraising efforts across the Louth region.
Search begins for new Louth GAA manager THE Louth football team are on the look-out for a new manager after Aidan O’Rourke decided not to seek a third year in the role. The former Armagh All-Ireland winning defender helped the Wee County preserve their Division 2 status in his first year, but this sea-
son was unable to prevent relegation to Division 3. Despite overseeing a Leinster Championship first round victory over Westmeath this season, Louth suffered heavy defeats at the hands of Kildare and Tyrone. Aidan thanked the players for
their effort during his time in charge, along with his backroom team and County Board officers. The search now begins for O’Rourke’s successor and among the names mentioned are former manager, Peter Fitzpatrick, and Colin Kelly.

difference for theatre group DUNDALK Youth Theatre hosted a drama workshop with a difference last weekend. It was facilitated by Jason Webb from the UK based Trestle Theatre Company, who specialise in theatre using masks. The young people were introduced to a unique approach to studying the plays of William Shakespeare. Each person selected a mask which represented a character from one of his plays and soon the space was filled Kings, Queens, Jesters, Fools, Princesses and Princes and many more. “Shakespeare is fun to do like this” was the response from
everybody, “let’s do more” They then proceeded to do scenes from Richard the Third. The consensus from the participants of the workshop, was; that, Shakespeare, can be accessible by doing it in a fun way Dundalk Youth Theatre is part-funded by Create Louth and is facilitated by Edwina Albrecht and Pat McKenna. Barry Hamilton lives the World Cup dream By Paul Byrne
Blackrock man Barry Hamilton is back in Ireland following his dream trip to the World Cup in Brazil. The STATSports employee was in Brazil as part of the Croatian National team’s backroom staff having impressed them at their training base in Austria in May when demonstrating the STATSports Viper Tracking System which measures player’s heart rate, distance covered in a game, weight loss and sweat loss. I was absolutely thrilled to be ask as you can imagine and the next morning I was on a plane with the team heading to the World Cup”, explained Barry. Barry was based in Sao Paolo, Recife and Manaus during the tournament as he became an integral part of the Croatian backroom staff. Although he enjoyed every minute Barry was quick to

The training sessions generally started at 5pm which was followed by rehab. I’d go home then and spend a couple of hours writing out reports sometimes not finishing up until 10:30. The atmosphere for the first game against Brazil was something that will
stay with me forever. I was sat right behind the Croatian bench so the view was spectacular”, laughed Barry. Having spent so long working with the Croats, Barry naturally formed a strong bond with the players and he admits he was devastated when they were beaten in their final match against Mexico which knocked them out of the tournament. “You spend so much time with the team and staff and of course you’re going to form an emotional attachment to the team”, said Barry. The camp was so euphoric after the 4-0
victory over Cameroon and I was so proud that I had been involved with a team that won a game at the biggest tournament in soccer. The last game against Mexico was a winner takes all scenario and unfortunately Croatia were beaten 3-1. I was devastated for the team knowing that their journey was at an end”, admits Barry. “I got back last week and it’s still really all sinking in what has happened over the last month. It’s an experience that will stay with me forever and one which I enjoyed immensely”, stated Barry.

Europa League takes over at Oriel Park By Paul Byrne
Some of the Dance Kids taking part in ‘Anything Goes’ Freda Hearty and the Dance Kids have once again delighted audiences with their show ‘Anything Goes’ in An Tain Theatre. The talented Dance Kids aged from just four years danced and sang their hearts out last weekend with two packed shows. The group enchanted audiences who were whisked over the rooftops into the practically perfect world of Mary Poppins, where they were entertained by the antics of Jane and Michael, Bert and the chimney sweeps. The tiny tots got the biggest cheer of the night when they took to the stage to perform to songs from
The Muppets. Afterwards the audience were delighted with songs from ‘Teen Beach Movie’, ‘Olly Murs’, ‘Wicked’ and ‘Calamity Jane’ to name just a few. The night of entertainment also included a trip down memory lane to the ‘School around the Corner’ where naughty Dance Kid Daddies David Minto, Tony Dolan and Niall Farrelly got up to mischief in Miss Culligan’s classroom. Followed by many school favourites such as ‘Schools Out For Summer’, ‘Another Brick In The Wall’ and ‘Revolting Children’ from the hit musical ‘Matilda’. After six months of hard work and
two show-stopping performances from the Dance Kids, an exhausted but delighted Freda Hearty said “I am absolutely thrilled with how well the shows turned out, the feedback we have received has been overwhelming. It’s all about having fun and we had so much fun during ‘Anything Goes’, we can’t wait for our Christmas show already. I would like to thank all the Dance Kids and their families, who are always so supportive.” Preparations are now underway for the Dance Kids annual Christmas show, which will take place in An Tàin Theatre in December.
Oriel Park should be rocking this week as Dundalk try to finish the job against Luxembourg side AS Jeunesse Esch having won the away leg 2-0. The carrot of a second round tie against Croatian giants Hadjuk Split awaits the winners as well as the not too inconsiderable matter of €130,000 prize money. First though Stephen Kenny’s side must complete the excellent job they did last week in Luxembourg where they
won 2-0 in front of 200 loyal travelling Lilywhite supporters. This is Dundalk’s first experience of European football in four years when they were defeated 8-0 on aggregate by Levski Sofia in the second round of the Europa League having beaten Luxembourg side Grevenmacher in round 1. Big European nights in Oriel seemed a million miles away just a couple of years ago with the club on its knees and it’s very existence threatened. However changes
both on and off the pitch coupled with the arrival of Stephen Kenny has seen the club enter a golden period with the Lilywhites currently sitting on top of the league playing some of the best football seen at the Carrick Road venue in years. Ticket prices for Thursday nights Europa League second leg against Jeunesse Esch are as follows. Stand – Adult: €20, Concession: €15, Children U12: €5. Ground – Adult: €15, Concession: €10, Children U12: €5.

Stole alcohol from supermarket A man who stole alcohol from a supermarket on two separate occasions was told that he would serve a six-month sentence if he drank again. Wayne Greenan, whose address was given as no fixed abode in Dundalk, was given the warning by Judge Flann Brennan as he suspended the sentence at Dundalk District Court.
“If you drink again, you will end up in jail and will serve that sentence. “There is no doubt about that as that is what has you the way you are”, stated the judge. The court heard that on May 13 this year, the defendant entered Centra in Dunleer and took a box of Heineken valued at €17 without paying.
The following day he went into the same shop and took beer valued at €26. His solicitor stated that he went into voluntary custody on May 14 where he remained until the case was heard. He added that the 20-year-old had a difficulty with drink but had made the most of his time in custody and is now sober.
Record score for cricket team Dromiskin played host to another nail biting game on Saturday 28th June as Dundalk’s second XI faced off against Laois 4, producing a wonderful display of quality cricket in the summer sunshine. Having won the toss, Dundalk captain John Finnegan elected to field first in the beautiful conditions. Laois went out all guns blazing however, notching up some quick runs until the first breakthrough; a catch from Scott McDonnell off Kalkeren Kieran’s bowling. Kieran took his second wicket a short time later but a litany of dropped catches allowed the Laois middle order to settle, eventually bringing up a 100-run partnership. Dundalk kept going after the drinks break, sharper this time, breaking the partnership with two wickets in two overs from Michael Mullen, with catches

from Peter Phillips and Dereck Mhlanga. A little shaken by the sudden loss of wickets, Laois’ run-rate slowed and Kevin Waterman took advantage, taking four excellent wickets in quick succession. Kieran took his third wicket of the day off the final over, leaving Dundalk a tough target of 201 from their allotted 40 overs. Mike Waterman opened the batting with Kieran, playing tactically brilliant cricket, scoring quick singles and keeping the Laois under pressure. Both wickets fell quickly, though, Waterman finishing on 41 and Kieran on 19. Next in were Mullen and Faheem Khan who put on a quick partnership, exploiting some weak bowling for successive boundaries at a time. Khan soon fell afoul of the LBW before he really got going, his innings closing for a score of 24. Mullen
continued strongly but a lapse in concentration saw him caught and bowled for 21. Phillips and McDonnell arrived at the crease, McDonnell showing off some fine strokes, smashing the Laois captain for a huge six over square leg. He was ably supported by Phillips, replaced by Louise Challoner, who finished not out. Kevin Waterman was unlucky to catch an edge from his first ball and Gerry McKeever finished off a fine innings for Dundalk in a very risky fashion, electing not to wear pads. Dundalk’s final total came out as 174, a record high for the second XI. —this week’s answers—
A woman who was found with a stolen television in her car pleaded guilty to a charge of handling stolen property when she appeared at Dundalk District Court. Mary McMillan of 24 Ladywell Tce, Dublin Rd, Dundalk , who apologised for her actions was convicted and fined €300 by Judge Flann Brennan.
The court heard that on December 14, 2013, a 32” television was stolen from a house at College Manor and that Gardai recovered a lead during their investigations. On December 27, Gardai received a call from security at DkIT to report a female in a car in the car park at a time when the college was closed.
Gardai attended and spoke to Mary McMillan, while in the car they found a 32” television which was missing the lead. The television was subsequently identified by the owner as the one stolen from his house. Solicitor, Peter Lavery, revealed that his client stated that the television was in the
car as she had been giving a lift to a friend. She accepts she was reckless and apologised. He added that the 33-yearold unemployed mother of three understands that she needs to be more careful in the future, and he added that he didn’t think his client would be in trouble again.
Dundalk cyclists’ successful weekend Dundalk cyclists had a successful weekend at the national champions held in Mullingar, picking up two gold medals. First up in the men’s tandem time trial Bryan McCrystal and James Brown went quickest to claim the gold, while in the women’s tandem time trial Eve McCrystal and Katie George Dunleavy claimed the gold. Both of the McCrystal siblings have been involved in the Paralympic programme for some months now and are building towards the Olympics in Rio 2016. Unfortunately a tragic road accident on Saturday morning saw the cancellation of the Vets and Women’s Road Race Championships on the Saturday. Here Eve would have been amongst the favourites to podium. While in the vets

race, Cuchulainn had sent a strong team, spearheaded by the in-form Alan Bingham and would have hopefully been in the hunt for the team prize. The men’s road race did go
ahead on the Sunday and the field tackled a 171km race, where Ireland’s top professionals. including Tour de France stage winner Dan Martin and former world track champion
Martyn Irvine, lined up with the best domestic based riders. Early in the race Bryan McCrystal got himself into a break of eight riders that stayed away to the end. With 30km to go 19-year-old Ryan Mullen rode away to a solo victory and claim the national champions jersey. In the sprint for the remaining medals, McCrystal came agonisingly close to claiming a medal, but just missed out finishing in fourth place. The latest round of the FPM Accountants Summer cycling league saw the six groups race out to Greenore and back. A fast night of racing saw a small group of scratch riders catch all in front of them, with Alan Bingham taking the win ahead of Naill Clarke in second and Liam Dolan in third.

Blackrock on list for tourism crown Blackrock is in line for an award after being nominated for the 2014 Tourism Towns Awards having been named on the shortlist for the Small Town Category. Fáilte Ireland today published the shortlist of 15 towns and villages from across the country that are being considered for the 2014 award with the likes of Kinsale, Roscarberry and Carrickon-Shannon also in the running. The competition, now in its third year, is designed to recognise Irish towns and villages where the local community goes the extra mile to enhance their appeal to tourists.
The selected towns will now be subject over the next few weeks to a series of unannounced inspections from a crack team of independent ‘secret shoppers’ who will visit each location and assess the quality of visitor experience to be had. The top ten “Highly Commended Tourism Towns” will be announced at the National Tidy Towns Awards later in the year with the overall winners, Best Large and Best Small, to be announced by Fáilte Ireland in November. The 15 towns will now be visited by a team of assessors who will look at how each town presents itself to visitors
and tells its story. In particular, they will look for evidence of a high quality visitor experience and of involvement by the local community and businesses in delivering this experience. They will look at the quality of its attractions and sites of interest and how well the town promotes what they have to offer. Now in its third year, the award will continue to focus on how participating towns have developed their local area in the following key tourism areas: Sense of Place, Local Involvement, Tourism Products Available, Development and promotion of the town.

Kickboxers impress in Castlebar tournament At the end of last month Irish Martial Arts Academy Dundalk had taken a team of eight students to Castlebar to compete in one of Ireland’s most-contested events on the kickboxing calendar, The White Tiger challenge. With five Juniors and three seniors representing the club, they returned with an impressive five Gold and seven Bronze medals. First on the podium for the club was Éadaoin McCrave who came third in open hand forms where she was competing against both junior girls and boys. Ęadaoin’s next events was on Sunday where she went on to win Gold in her division of points fighting and she also entered the next grade up for the experience where she secured another Bronze medal. Also in the Juniors on Saturday the club had Luke Boyle
representing in the light contact division and he went on to lift the Gold medal. Luke also competed on Sunday where he picked up a Bronze medal for points fighting. Two seniors competed on Saturday in the light contact divisions, first up was 19-year-old Shauna Flynn who was unlucky to be drawn against a national champion in her semi-final. However she made an excellent account of herself and finished with a Bronze medal. The same could be said for Paudy Finnegan it was only his second ever competition where he also was unlucky in his semifinal, he was giving away about 10kgs in weight and a foot in height to his competitor where he was beaten on a split decision. Sunday saw the rest of the team compete in the points fight-
ing divisions. where once again the club where well represented by Cailum Dowdall who secured Gold in his own category after a close fought final and a Bronze medal in the next category up. Shane McParland was unlucky in his quarter final where he fell 5-1 behind and showed great endeavour to get it back to 5-4, but the clock went against him. The last of the juniors on Sunday was Chloe Boyle this was Chloe’s first competition so it was a great experience for her to compete at this level and win a Bronze. Last to compete on the day for the club was 19 year old senior Kerri Watt, who topped off a great day for the club with a Gold in her intermediate division and then entered the advanced division where she won Gold again.

Talented singer has strong Dundalk links A UK-based singer with strong connections to Dundalk is making a big impression on the music scene on both sides of the Irish Sea at present. Stephanie McCourt, whose father Christopher hails from the town, reached number four in the iTunes singer/ songwriter chart last week with her new single ‘Hard Living’. Her EP ‘Stripped Back’ also charted at number 16 as her whirlwind rise to prominence continues. In February Stephanie signed a deal with the Unstoppable Music Group and since then the Londoner has been in big demand, recently selling out the legendary Jazz Café in Camden Town and appearing on BBC London. Stephanie is the daughter of Christopher McCourt, who moved to London in the 1980s. The McCourt family are well known in Dundalk, with Stephanie’s grandfather Jim a lifelong Dundalk FC supporter, along with his wife Audrey (née Hande from Cluan Enda). Stephanie’s mother is Zambian and she credits her African and Irish roots to a diverse taste in music. She revealed though that it was from her dad Christopher that she got her soulful voice. “My mum can’t sing at all but my dad definitely has a voice and a lot of people say I inherited mine from him. He’s a massive Elvis fan and I grew up on that as a result. “He is really delighted at how well things
are going for me. My family back in Ireland have also been really supportive, especially Marie-Clare, who has been promoting me like crazy over there. “Dad left Dundalk when he was a teenager but he still loves Dundalk and Ireland and I enjoy going back there too. During my childhood I was back and forth every summer and I hope to get back again in the next few months,” she said. Indeed, one of Stephanie’s first ever gigs came when she performed locally at the Century Bar in Roden Place. “That was a while ago but it was great fun and I’d like to thank Darren Kerley for having me. “I’m told I’d be welcomed back anytime and it would definitely be my pleasure to perform there again next time I’m home.” Stephanie admits it’s “all go, go, go” at present but she does hope to make a visit back to Ireland in the not-too-distant future. Before then, she will be performing at a couple of festivals in the UK, while she hopes to release her video for ‘Hard Living’ within the next fortnight. “The last few weeks have been a whirlwind really,” she admitted. “It has all been a bit crazy but I’m just enjoying it all and I’m very grateful that things are going so well.” You can hear Stephanie’s music via her website www.mccourtofficial.com or follow her on Facebook or Twitter at mccourtofficial.

According to John Ruddy of Dundalk Outcomers, “Our Pride Festival has always had a strong emphasis on family inclusion and involvement: the Pride Day at the Outcomers’ centre is a riot of colour, entertainment and decoration with distractions for the kids and good food and relaxation for the adults. It was natural, especially with the forthcoming referendum next year, to bring that theme into focus for this year’s Pride.” Arising from this year’s theme is a new addition to the programme: the morning of Tuesday July 15 will see a Diverse LGBT Families Seminar take place in The County Museum Dundalk, with input from a broad range of experience and perspectives, at 11am, admission free. Other events for this year’s Dundalk Pride programme include: Monday 14th – Pride Launch: This year Pride will be launched by Jerry Buttimer TD and chair of Fine Gael LGBT at 2pm in Outcomers Centre. Admission Free. Refreshments provided. Tuesday 15th – Diverse LGBT Families Seminar at 11am in the County Museum
Admission free. Thursday 17th – Open Music Session: A free-flowing jamming session at 8pm in Outcomers Centre. Admission free. Friday 18th – Pride Party: In a change from previous years the party this year is on the Friday night in the newly refurbished nightclub of the Fairways Hotel. Accommodation is available at special ‘Pride’ rates: ring the Fairways 042 932 1500. Party at 9.30pm. Admission €10. Saturday 19th – Pride Day: A day when Outcomers Centre is transformed by festival decorations, crafts and colours, with artisan food, terrace café, barbecue, live music and entertainment, holistic therapies, garden games and children’s play area. Everyone welcome. Noon to 5pm at Outcomers Centre. Admission free. Also running throughout the month of July, from Wednesday 9 to Saturday 26, there will be a Photography Exhibition in the County Museum, Dundalk, of the works of Ken Finnegan exploring everyday LGBT lives: ‘Relate’. Dundalk LGBT festival is organised by volunteers from Dundalk Outcomers, an LGBT support service at 8 Roden Place.

NOVENA TO THE SACRED HEART Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I asked you for many favours. This time I ask you for this special favour (mention it). Take it, dear Heart of Jesus and place it within your own broken heart where your Father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes it will become your favour, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for 3 days. Promise publication and favours will be granted. (never known to fail). E.G.

Letter to the editor Feede Mountpleasant Dundalk Dear Editor, I have recently been on holiday in Jersey where I admired the well kept Roadside Hedgerows rich with wild flowers and grasses. Quite the opposite in NorthLouth where many householders tend to spray the Roadside Hedgerows skirting their properties with weed killer and turning the lush vegetation to an arid wasteland.

They are unaware, I presume, that some of these hedgerows may be hundreds of years old and could contain rare plants which are on the brink of distinction. It behoves all of us who are privileged to live in this beautiful countryside, to make an effort to, maintain and enhance, where possible, the character of it and to provide a good habitat for plants and wild-life to thrive. Yours, Pat McKenna.
