The chairman of the College Manor and Heights residents association has listed a number of proposals to help put an end to anti-social behaviour which continue to blight DKIT’s Student Union’s annual Rag Week. According to John Temple, chairman of the residents association, last year’s Rag Week led to damage and destruction of private property as well as anti-social behaviour which has caused the residents to demand action and look for solutions to the ongoing problem. Inspired by Kieran Mulvey’s mediation report on event management and

events at Croke Park during the Garth Brooks fiasco Mr Temple has called for RAG Week to apply for an event licence permit each year. “If the RAG week can not be cancelled we as residents feel the events need to be properly planned and carefully executed with more events involving less alcohol based activities. We are appalled at the continued lack of respect for our neighbourhood and our property”, noted John. Last year we installed floral boxes to improve the visual appearance of the estate and during the course of rag week these boxes were destroyed leaving behind an awful mess. in Brief Mortgage Help

A Dundalk based firm Debtsolv which is assisting many hard pressed mortgage holders to restructure their home loans has welcomed this week’s announcement that the Insolvency Service of Ireland (ISI) is abolishing the fees which they were applying to personal insolvency applications. Paddy Greene, Marketing Director of Debtsolv said the removal will encourage people to avail of mortgage re-structuring.

on car bonnets, urinating in public, littering, smashing windows of houses and cars and causing criminal damage. We feel we are not getting any help from the Student Union and we don’t think this problem can go away if they continue to ignore it”, he added. In a report issued by the residents as-

sociation a number of suggestions have been included to try and end the anti-social elements of Rag Week. These include: -That Dundalk Institute of Technology place a condition that students create an event that is 24 hours without alcohol. -That, conditions attached to such permit ensure proper procedures, polic-

ing and emergency arrangements are in place and include but are not limited to: (a) 24 hour Garda Public Order Unit (b) Garda foot patrols (c) On the spot fines for littering, urinating in public. (d) Door to door canvass to student inhabited properties (e) Students are issued with water at the end of events (f) Procedures are put in place to ensure students of DKIT only are issued with event tickets. According to Brian Fitzpatrick, president of DKIT’s Student Union his body are aware of problems caused to residents last year during Rag Week and are currently involved in

a number of initiatives to try and make things better. “We were probably a bit naive coming in at the start of our term and we didn’t realise how big the anti-social problem actually was during Rag Week. We have taken the residents associations comments on boardsand we are actively involved in making sure next year’s Rag Week goes off without any problems. We are open to any proposals and we have already looked into having student patrols during rag week where mature students patrol the area and warn students to keep the noise down and try and nip

any trouble in the bud before it escalates” explained Brian. “It can get lost in all the negative publicity but Rag Week is mainly about raising money for worthy causes and last year we were delighted to hand over over €8,000 to charities such as SOSAD and a Chance for Alice. “I wouldn’t agree on cancelling Rag Week altogether but as a union we are completely adamant that we will work with any community group to help work out possible solutions to curb the anti-social elements of rag week”, concluded the Student’s Union president.

A 36-year-old musician who suffered horrific injuries and was told he would never walk again was banned from driving for one year as a result of being over the limit at the time of the incident. Brian Harrison from Mountain Park, Carlingford, pleaded guilty to a drink driving and no insurance charges when he appeared at Dundalk District Court as a result of the incident on January 22, last year. The court heard that at 3am on that date Gardai were called to an accident on the Carlingford Road at Ballymascanlon. The defendant, who had a previous conviction for having no insurance, was arrested and a blood sample taken at the Lourdes Hosptial in

Drogheda revealed that he was over the limit for driving. Barrister, Irene Sands, stated that her client struck a lorry that had been parked at the side of the road. As a result, he was in a coma for five weeks, spent three and a half months in hospital and was in a wheelchair for a month afterwards. “The only harm he did on the night was to himself. He has difficulty sitting and can’t climb steps, while the injuries will stay with him. “He is a musician who had been at a gig in Killarney and while he had been drinking earlier, he thought he was ok. He can’t work, and is on social welfare while he lost his girlfriend in an accident

three weeks ago”, explained Ms Sands who added that the defendant was very embarrassed and remorseful about the incident. “He is unable to drive for the foreseeable future and although he was told he would never walk again, he has come a long way”, she added. Judge Flann Brennan acknowledged that Mr Harrison had suffered greatly from the incident and stated that he would take that into account. However, he added that he couldn’t ignore the previous conviction. In relation to drink driving he imposed a €250 fine, and a further €200 fine for having no insurance. He disqualified for one year in respect of each offence.

U-13s enjoy great weekend of rugby

DUNDALK U-13s traveled to balbriggan last Saturday in good numbers and were determined to put on a good show for the large number of parents who accompanied the team. The weather conditios could not have been better for running rugby and the chaps ran the ball to great effect. In truth at this time of the year and in light of the youths now playing the full 15 man a side game, it was very much a practice match for all. The coming weeks will see more and more competitive games when the leagues start up. After the match the group of 55 travelled to the Aviva to see Lenister and Munster in an epic encounter, and to see their heros of the current Irish squad. A great day out was had by all.

Call for more funds for schools Sinn Féin County Councillor and LMETB member Tomás Sharkey is calling for improved capitation grants for schools in the coming budget. “For the last number of years we have seen the capitation funding for schools cut. This funding is to cover the running costs of our local schools. Only this summer the Louth Meath Education and Training Board was told that schools may be short of funds to pay for heating, lighting and maintenance as the financial year draws to a close. “The Minister for Education has been informed by many CEOs of Education and Training Boards, management bodies and her own civil servants that there is a crisis in schools when it comes to paying bills. Without heating or lighting our schools would have to

close. I find it hard to stomach reports that she is actively considering a 1% cut in this funding for schools in the coming budget. Councillor Sharkey, who is a second level teacher said: “Everybody knows that schools have greater overheads than ever. More evening events than ever are being held in schools increasing heating and energy costs. There are huge changes in the curriculum increasing the demand for resources such as work sheets, projects that cost money to print. “It makes no sense for this Minister to continue to starve our schools, teachers, students and families of the basic requirements for a proper learning environment.”

Night time taxi rank introduced in town

Dundalk Leader 15th October 2014

By Paul Byrne

Night time taxi ranks were officially introduced in Park St last Wednesday evening. There is spacings marked out for 17 taxis and they will be in use between the hours of 10pm and 6am seven days a week. The move means that Dundalk now has 39 specified spaces for taxis with ten in Crowe St and 12 in Francis St along with the 17 assigned to Park St. The decision was made last year to introduce the extra taxi spaces following talks between

Gardaí, taxi companies, town council members and the Municipal Policy Committee. The move had caused concern amongst traders in Park St but these concerns seem to have been alleviated given the taxi ranks will only operate between the hours of 10pm and 6am. According to Jimmy Cumiskey the issue of the new taxi rank will be on the agenda at the Dundalk traders meeting tomorrow evening. “We will be speaking about the new taxi rank at our meeting on Thursday evening but I think most people are

happy enough in principle with regards to the new rank and for me I’d only have small problems like maybe the signage could be a bit clearer and things like that. But all traders can have their say on Thursday where the issue of Christmas lights will also be on the agenda”, explained Jimmy. According to Louth County Council’s Paddy Donnelly the new rank on Park St came about to meet the public’s needs as well as those of the companies. “We now have three ranks in Dundalk and 39 taxi spaces which

we feel will meet the needs for people in Dundalk. We listened to the various groups and this was seen as the best way to go about it. The idea behind this is to allow traffic to move freely up Park St and to stop illegal parking in the area. “We had a period of public consultation where anybody with reservations about the idea could have let us know of any issues they may have had but as there was no response we can only assume everybody is ok with this”, noted Paddy.

Archery club hit their targets The end of the very successful 2014 outdoor season for the loal CúChulainn Archers club came last weekend with the National Field Championships which was held in Wicklow. Competing with great success for the Ardee based archery club were Fiachra Mac an Bhreithiún and John Keenan. Both competed in the Masters Category with Fiachra finishing first and John coming third. CúChulainn Archers is firstly a Target Archery Club, and has really only started competing in Field archery in the last 12 months. Notwithstanding this, members of the club competed with great success this year with Deirdre Rogers breaking the Women’s Irish Compound IFAF Field Record and Éamonn Rogers winning the All Ireland IFAF Field Championships. Meanwhile, Fiachra Mac an Bhreithiún gained the first ever IFAF Compound A International Classification. The club was also well represented at the Euronations Championships which, this year, was held in Belfast. Éamonn and Fiachra represented Ireland on the men’s Compound Team and Shona Judge represented Ireland on the women’s Recurve Team and all three were part of the

Éamonn and Deirdre finished second in the Mixed Doubles Team event in the Irish National Outdoor Championships, with Fiachra taking gold in the Masters Individual category. At the recent Archery Ireland Awards night, Lauren Gaynor, who together with her brother Eimhin, competed in the Eu-

ropean Championships and the World Championships earlier this year, was presented with the ‘Junior Archer of the Year’ award. CúChulainn Archers run beginner classes throughout the year in the Parish Centre, Hale Street, Ardee. Anyone should contact the club at cuchulainnarchers@ hotmail.com

New group bids to save 20 lives per year By Paul Byrne

A new initiative which could potentially save between ten and 20 lives per year in Dundalk is on the lookout for sponsorship and volunteers to help get the scheme up and running as soon as possible. The Cardiac First Responders (CFRs) scheme organisation has been holding a number of meeting to set up new regional groups all across the county with a group in Blackrock/Haggardstown already operational. The idea of the scheme sees a member of the public volunteer to assist their local community by attending emergency calls within an agreed radius of where they live or work and providing basic emergency care whilst an emergency response vehicle is en route to the patient. According to Michael Singleton, chairman of the Dundalk Cardiac First Responder Scheme, every single minute is crucial when attending to a heart

attack or choking victim and lives will be saved through this initiative. “On average up to 20 lives a year will be saved in Dundalk through this group. In many medical emergencies people can die within the first few minutes. We also know that, if certain simple but critical interventions can be performed within those first few minutes, life can be saved and disability reduced” explained Michael. “We are looking for volunteers to join their local scheme and become a community first responder. We will train them for free and all volunteers will be required to attend an IHF/PHECC AED course which will only take four to six hours to complete. It is important to note that we are not replacing any service and that we are working as a voluntary support service working in conjunction with the ambulance service”, he added. The Dundalk Cardiac First Responders are starting from

zero and need money to cover the cost of the scheme. Thirty-six volunteers have come forward to date which will hopefully soon rise as people become aware of the initiative. Michael is looking for the general public to help out with the cost of a defibrillator pack (€1500 per pack), training costs (€900) and high viz vests (€900). If any business would like to sponsor a defibrillator pack their logo can be put onto the back of the pack. According to Michael the sooner these sponsorship costs are met the sooner the scheme will get up and running and begin to save lives. If you are interested in either volunteering for the scheme or becoming a sponsor please contact Michael Singleton at 0857399754 or Barry Hennessy at 0851181420. A meeting will be held on October 22 at 8pm in the community room in the new Tesco with everybody welcome to go along and find out more.

Dundalk Rugby Club continue to impress

DUNDALK Rugby Club continued their impressive form on the field of play with a number of teams turning in impressive performances and chalking up victories. The firsts made it four wins out of four with a 32-3 win away to Monkstown to stay top of the table. Tries from Chris Scully and Jonathan Williams and the kicking of Ultan Murphy made it 15-3 at the break. Stephen McGee added two second half tries to complete the win. Meanwhile the seconds also continued their winning run with a 24-3 win away to Monkstown. Among the try scorers for Dundalk were Ciaran Lennon and Michael Murphy while best for the Dundalk side were Darren McGuinness, Enda Murphy and Laurence Steen. Dundalk U 15s travelled to Portarlington for their first outing in the Leinster League. The Dundalk boys started brightly with early tries from Ronan Greene and David Murdock, both of which were converted by Gavin Farrell and at half time the score was 41-0. A discsssion at half time between the referee and coaches led to Portarlington conceding the game and the second half consisted of a mix and match approach to allow some of the less experienced Portarlington players getting some valuable game time and experience. Training for the U15s, players born in the Year 2000, is on Monday and Thursday nights from 6pm to 7.30pm. All new players are welcome, for enquiries email fniall@ gmail.com. Teachers and students enjoy chance to learn Irish music By Paul Byrne

Réalt na Mara’s talented group of musicians enjoyed one last session before the Halloween break with both teachers and pupils in fine form during what is now a regular feature of the school timetable. Last year Principal Philip McCaul and his staff began an initiative to promote music in the school and that has continued this year with the aim being to nurture and develop a love of ceol in the pupils. The main initiatives have seen the creation of an orchestral strings programme with music generation; after-school piano lessons which is steered by Réalt na Mara teacher Anne McArdle; bringing in additional expertise from Comhaltas Outreach to assist in whistle tuition and last but not least a forthnightly traditional session for students, teachers and

the wider Réalt na Mara family. According to Principal McCaul all of the above programmes will continue this year and he is hopeful that they will continue to flourish. As well as pupils there have also been a number of teachers who have got into the spirit of the forthnightly sessions with Mr McCaul (accordion), Mrs McCullins (Tin whistle and flute), Miss O’Kane (Concertina), Mrs Callan (tin whistle), Bn Ui Chiaraín (also tin whistle) and recently retired deputy principal Mrs Conlon (who has picked up the fiddle again all getting involved. The Dundalk branch of Comhaltas also take part with Paul and Lorraine McMahon regularly joining in the trad sessions. As Principal McCaul explains the simple aim of the promotion of music in the school is to help pupils and teachers alike to share their love of music.

“Today is our last session before the Halloween break. “We have students, former teachers and members of the wider community in the hall to share their music and their love of music. “It is an opportunity for each of us to enjoy each other’s talents and to learn from each other. And I suppose it also gives a chance for pupils to see their teachers in a different light”, concluded Principal McCaul. As well as being fun the sessions also have a practical function enabling the school to assemble a body of music which can be performed on school occasions such as masses, concerts and special celebrations. Both the trad group and school choir have already been marked down to perform during December for the Setanta Choir and the Redemptorist church respectively.

Launch of Relay for Life

Scouts celebrate 60th anniversary

By Paul Byrne

ORGANISERS for this year’s Relay for Life in Dundalk have made one last call for all survivors of cancer to join this 24 hour fundraising event. Now in it’s sixth year, the hugely popular annual event begins life in its new surroundings having secured Dundalk Stadium as a venue for the event which takes place on October 26 and 27. Having already raised €350,000 for the Irish Cancer Society organisers have urged the Dundalk public to help make this year’s event the best yet. According to committee member Damien Higgins it’s still not too late to enter a team for the 24 hour relay which finishes on Bank Holiday Monday at 3pm. “We are looking for survivors of cancer to get in touch with us and we’re also looking for more teams to register for the 24 hour relay. We would recommend

Members of the Relay for Life committee at the launch in Dundalk Stadium

that at least 15 people make up a team as it’s a 24 hour relay and people are going to need a rest at various stages throughout the night”, explained Damien. “We are delighted that the relay is in Dundalk Stadium and this event is here to stay in Dundalk for the long haul. People have really supported us over the years and hopefully that will be the case again this time around. We will have plenty of

stuff going on in the stadium to entertain people with live music, stalls and lots of fun stuff for the kids. In keeping with the relay philosophy of raising awareness, survivors of cancer will walk the opening lap of the relay at 3pm on Sunday 27. We will look after all of them and they will be treated as VIPs on the day”,promised Damien. If you would like to put a team in this year’s Relay For Life Dundalk

“As well as raising vital funds to support the Irish Cancer Society’s work, Relay for Life is held to increase cancer awareness, celebrate the lives of survivors, remember those who lost their lives to cancer, and to try and unite a community in the fight against cancer. This year’s event takes place in the Dundalk Stadium, on Sunday October 26 and Bank Holiday Monday October 28.

A DUNDALK Scout group has called on former members to ‘be prepared’ for a reunion as they celebrate their 60th anniversary. St Patrick’s Scout Group 1st/2nd/5th Louth will celebrate their Diamond anniversary on Friday November 7 in the Ballymascanlon House Hotel at 7pm for a night of food, drink, dancing and maybe even some scouting activities for the night that is in it. Current group leader Michelle Boyle is looking for members, volunteers or anybody who has had any involvement with St Patricks Scout Group over the past 60 years to get in touch and help mark the occasion. “We’ve never really had an anniversary dinner for the scout group over the years so we decided

it was about time we organised something and tried to get as many people as possible to come along and have a reunion of sorts to celebrate our 60th anniversary”, explained Michelle. “ Our job now is to try and get in contact with as many of them as possible and help spread the word so they can come along and help us have a great night on November 7 in the Ballymac”, she added. If anybody was a member, leader or in any way involved in St Patrick’s 1st/2nd/5th Louth Scout Group they are asked to contact Michelle at 0879333804. The 60th anniversary celebrations take place on Friday November 7 at 7pm with tickets costing €45. Tickets are available from T&G Byrne Locksmith’s in the Clanbrassil Centre, Dundalk.

Screamfest in Fairways DUNDALK is set for a Halloween treat when Screamfest comes to the Fairways Hotel from October 24 to 31. The idea behind Screamfest is that Ireland has fallen to a zombie apocalypse and all uninfected citizens are advised to make their way to the

last remaining survivor’s camp. In order to do this you will have to find your way out of a 12,500sq ft maze with two metre high walls surrounding you. Suitable for adults and teenagers, there are also non-scary family events during the day.

O’Mahonys celebrate Intermediate title From Page 1 Point Road men held their nerve in the closing minutes to see off the challenge of St Fechins. Conor Finnegan was the scoring hero for the O’Mahonys as he landed three late points to put an end to the Termonfeckin side’s comeback and secure a famous 1-11 to 1-8 win. In what proved to be an entertaining contest, the Dundalk side looked to be well in control three minutes into the second half when a Conor Crawley goal had them seven points to the good. However, the Fechins staged an impressive comeback and drew level to leave the result in the balance entering the last five minutes. It was then that the Brendan Nordon managed team showed their battling qualities as their greater determination saw them claim the decisive scores to secure a deserved win. While Finnegan was named Man-of-the-Match it really was an excellent all-round team effort that saw the O’Mahonys through in the end. After the game, the winning captain, Pat O’Brien, accepted the Seamus Flood Cup and signal the start of a night of celebration on the Quay.

Sinead’s trip is life-changing experience By Paul Byrne

Sinead Dullaghan who recently returned from a Youth Empowerment Summer Camp in Vermont has described the trip as a life changing experience in which she enjoyed every single second. Sinead who graduated from St Louis earlier this year is currently in DKIT studying ‘Film and Television Production’ and hopes to use the experience gained in Vermont to create documentaries focusing on global issues which directly

affect young people. The trip to Vermont was made possible after Sinead was one of five students nationally to win a prestigious EIL Travel Award. The aim of EIL is to enrich young people’s lives and help promote a better understanding of other cultures. As well as a one to one interview with a selection committee, Sinead was observed as part of a group where her natural leadership skills and excellent teamwork led the judges to give her one of the five travel awards. And despite a few nerves

as she prepared to make the long trip to Vermont in New England USA it was an experience she will carry with her for ever more. “I honestly can say I had the best trip of my life in Vermont. I made so many new friends and learnt so many new things. The course was so diverse which made it really interesting. During the day we were taking part in workshops about global issues such as child poverty and child slavery which was fascinating. And in the evenings it was more laid back and we had a guy come in

and teach us African Drumming which was amazing”, enthused Sinead. Sinead is hoping to use the vast experience she gained in Vermont to good use with the ultimate aim to get into the art of documentary making highlighting global issues such as child poverty and slavery. Sinead was one of three St Louis girls from the class of 2014 to win Leadership awards with Ciara Quigley and Sinead O’Hagan highlighting just how well versed the school is in nurturing leaders.

Louth Macra bring farm safety to the forefront Louth Macra Na Feirme Young Farmers Development Group held a Farm Safety Information Night on Monday October 6 in the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Dundalk. The event was very well attended by individuals from the farming communities of both Louth and the surrounding counties. Pat Griffin from the Health and Safety Author-

ity give a detailed report on the problems faced on Irish farms on a daily basis along with the plan for improving occupational health and safety in agriculture. He also presented the listeners with the shocking statistics from recent years in relation to farm fatalities together with the figures concerning the number of serious and life changing accidents that take place each day.

The main part of the evening involved three local men, John McDonnell, Tom Hoey and Kevin McEnteggart who courageously shared their personal accounts of their own farm accident and the consequences which followed. Brian Rohan, founder of the organisation EMBRACE give an overview of the work they are carrying out to develop various support struc-

tures to help families in any way possible come to terms with the irreplaceable loss of their loved ones following a farm fatality. Embrace recently launched a series of videos with testimonies of families that have endured tragic loss in farm accidents entitled ‘What’s Left Behind!’. Brian played the first of its videos on the night which focuses on the story of fall-out

following the death of Offaly hurling U-21 manager Dermot Hogan earlier this year. The video shows the deep emotional scars and practical problems that the popular GAA figure’s death has left. Michael Hanlon of Hanlon Machinery gave a demonstration on how easily the new PTO cover product can be adapted to different shafts.

The night concluded with a considerable number of contributions from the audience with individuals sharing their personal farm accident experiences followed by an open discussion on health and safety issues on Irish farms. Louth Macra would like to sincerely thank all the brave contributors on the night along with the event sponsors.

THANKSGIVING PRAYER TO Alexandrina M.Da Costa Anniversary 13th Oct. (D. 1955) Jesus you who rejoice with simple and humble hearts so often forgotten and despised, exalt with the grace of canonisation, Blessed Alexandrina, who always wanted to live hidden from the world and far from it's pomp. Listen to the pleas which we make to you through her intercession, grant us especially the grace which we desire if it is for your honour the glorification of the immaculate heart of Mary and the salvation of sinners on whose behalf this deeply devoted daughter of yours gave herself so generously. “I chose you for the happiness of many souls” (Jesus a Alexandrina). Grateful Thanks B.McN.

NOVENA TO THE SACRED HEART Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I asked you for many favours. This time I ask you for this special favour (mention it). Take it, dear Heart of Jesus and place it within your own broken heart where your Father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes it will become your favour, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for 3 days. Promise publication and favours will be granted. (never known to fail). N.H. NOVENA TO THE SACRED HEART Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I asked you for many favours. David is honoured with call to shinty squad By Paul Byrne

I N T E R N AT I O N A L call-ups are few and far between for GAA players in County Louth but that honour will be bestowed on Knockbridge’s David Kettle this weekend as he travels to Inverness to represent his country in the 2014 Senior Hurling/Shinty International series. The 26-year-old joins a 19-man squad that also includes hurling powerhouses such as Tipperary’s Patrick ‘Bonner’ Maher and Cork’s Patrick Horgan and Conor Lehane.

The talented hurler has already enjoyed a fantastic year having helped his Knockbridge teammates to the Louth Senior Hurling Championship title last month where they seen off rivals Pearse Og. And now he is set to finish off 2014 in style thanks to impressing Ireland manager Michael Walsh during last month’s trials. “I was absolutely thrilled to get the call to say I’d made it into the 19 man squad”, admitted David. “I tried out a few years ago for the U21 Irish side and I didn’t play great so

Graduate creates a real buzz at festival

David Kettle is honoured to have been called into the Ireland squad

it was great to do myself justice in the trials and get the call”, he enthused. “Shinty is slightly different to hurling and it can take a while to get used to it but luckily I have experience from my days in Trinity as we used to play an annual event against Edinburgh college. The hardest part to get used to is the fact that you’re not allowed touch the ball with your foot and you can’t catch the ball”, explained David. The teams face off in Bught Park in Inverness on Saturday October 18th at 2pm in the first test with the return game taking place in

Newry on October 25 at 5pm. Kilkenny’s Michael Walsh is this year’s Irish manager and both games will be shown on TG4. According to David the call up is a great honour and confirms how good the coaching set up in Knockbridge really is. “It’s a huge honour for me personally but it’s also an honour for the club. Three Louth men have been picked for the International hurling/ shinty side and they’ve all come from Knockbridge (Paul Dunne and Shane Fennell preceded David). That shows how good the coaches are in our club”, noted David.

A graduate from Dundalk Institute of Technology has beaten fellow creative media graduates from across Ireland to take the top prize at the recent Honeycomb Creative Buzz Awards. Twenty graduates from universities and institutions across the island of Ireland were selected by a panel of industry experts as rising stars of the creative industries after submitting digital projects ranging from photography, gaming and movies to websites, animation and music. The graduates then took part in a week-long boot camp as part of the recent CultureTECH festival in Derry. At the end of the week, the graduates were invited to present to a panel of industry experts and Ais-

ling Grufferty, a graduate in Music and Audio Production from Dundalk Institute came out on top. Congratulating Aisling on her achievement, Caroline O’Sullivan, Senior Lecturer at Dundalk Institute said: “Seven out of the 20 graduates at the recent Creative Buzz awards came from Dundalk Institute from a range of programmes such as creative media, games design and music and audio production. This demonstrates the wealth of talent coming from the college and the contribution the college is making to the creative industries both locally and globally. “Aisling is an excellent example of the next generation of creative media stars and as a young, female mu-

sic producer, she is leading the way in supporting emerging female artists in order to break down the stereotypes of the over sexualisation of female artists”, explained Caroline.

Cooley historical society lecture Matthew McGreehan, Louth I.F.A County Chairman will give a talk in Long’s Pub, Grange, Cooley, on Friday night, October 24th, 2014, at 8pm on the changing face

of Irish farming past and present in the Louth area. The recent history of agriculture has been closely tied with a range of political issues including water

pollution, biofuels, genetically modified organisms, tariffs and farm subsidies. Why not come and learn more about the everyday life of a farmer in a changing envi-

ronment. Refreshments served- Admission €5- Everybody welcome. If interested in Genealogyclasses please phone 0851833110.

Kelly appointed Louth manager Former Louth star, Colin Kelly, has been appointed manager of the county’s senior team for the coming two years. The Drogheda man who succeeds Aidan O’Rourke, is regarded as one of the best players to wear the red jersey during a career that spanned over a decade. After hanging up his boots he turned to management and led Louth the the Leinster U-21 Final, while also

enjoyed success with O Raghallaighs and more recently the Dreadnots, who finished runners-up in the Senior Championship. The former Newtown Blues and Dreadnots clubman will be assisted by selectors Eugene Judge and Ollie McDonnell. Kelly’s appointment coincided with the draw for the Leinster Championship which will see Louth face Westmeath in the first round.

Bridie Byrne celebrated her 95th birthday by getting behind the wheel of the bus during the OAP weekend trip to Galway organised by the Lions Club

By urozmaicić program folklorystyczny i by zespół miał chwilę na zmianę kostiumów i złapanie oddechu. Gratulujemy i życzymy kolejnych 5ciu, 10ciu i 100lat trwania. Kujawiak - pochodzi z Kujaw. Cechy: Powolny, metrum 3/4. Najwolniejszy i najbardziej liryczny z tańców narodowych. Krakowiak - żywy, polski taniec ludowy z okolic Krakowa, zaliczany do polskich tańców narodowych, w metrum 2/4 i w charakterystycznym, synkopowanym rytmie. Nazwa tańca pochodzi z XVIII wieku i odnosiła się do grupy tańców posiadających własne lokalne nazwy: mijany, dreptany, ścigany, skalmierzak, przebiegany. Polonez – (fr. Polonaise-polski)nazywany pierwotnie chodzonym. Pozdrawiam – Aga Boniewicz

Opera must triumph over war Award-winning opera producer Ellen Kent is determined to see opera triumph over war as she brings Eastern Europe talent to the local stage with a stunning performance of Madama Butterfly. During preparations for the show which visits The TLT Concert Hall and Theatre in Drogheda on October 24 with the Ukrainian National Opera in Kharkiv, Ellen was caught just six miles from a very bloody civil war. Warned by the British Foreign Office not to travel due to fatalities, bombings and kidnappings, Ellen still managed to transport the complete sets, props and costumes out of the area. Focusing on overcoming the difficulties of the conflict, Ellen has brought together a new company including Ukrainians, Moldovans and Russians, working together in harmony, to bring to the stage a heart-wrenchingly emotional production of Puccini’s popular Madama Butterfly. Ellen said: “I know it sounds like a cliche but really the show must go on. I was in Odessa in rehearsals for Butterfly in 2005 when the Orange Revolution broke out and I just thought, here we go again.” With magnificent sets by renowned Ukrainian designer Nadia Shvets and handpicked soloists from the national operas of Odessa, Spain and Rostov, the show visits The TLT Concert Hall and Theatre in Drogheda on October 24. Puccini’s popular tale of Madama Butterfly, which was used as the basis for West End musical Miss Saigon, is a heartbreaking true story of a beautiful Japanese girl who falls in love with an American naval lieutenant with dire consequences

Over to you Question: Are people right to protest against water charges?

Susan McAreavey

Audrey Fergus

Caroline Carr

Kay McKevitt

Yes, actually there’s not enough people protesting. This tax has been forced down the Irish people’s throats and it is absolutely ridiculous to expect us to pay for water.

People are 100% right to protest against the installation of meters. Profit for water is morally wrong and the government cannot be allowed to get away with this

I totally agree with everybody who is protesting against these water charges. Not a lot of people realise that we already pay for water and it makes absolutely no sense that we are asked to pay for it twice.

I don’t really see the point of protesting to be honest. The meters are going to go in anyway and I think people should pay for water as long as they make the charges fair.

Eric Igweiki Of course people are to protest. Ireland is blessed with so much water coming from the sky it makes no sense to pay for for it. The Irish government are doing this to try and get out of a recession.

Have your say on Louth’s future Those living and working in Louth and with an interest in its development are being invited to help shape the county’s future into the next decade by contributing to the Louth County Development Plan, 2015-2021. Louth County Council is calling on communities throughout Louth to get involved in the preparation of the County Development Plan.

A draft plan has been prepared for County Louth and, once adopted, it will have significant implications for a wide variety of aspects of life within the county and it is important that all points of view are taken into account in the process. The council is now inviting local communities to have their say on the draft plan which is available for

inspection during normal opening hours at Louth County Council customer service desks and libraries throughout the county. Locations where the plan can be viewed include County Hall, Millennium Centre, Dundalk; Town Hall, Crowe Street, Dundalk; Mid-Louth Civic Centre, Fairgreen, Ardee and at libraries in Dundalk, Drogheda, Ardee, Dunleer and Carlingford.

Cllr Oliver Tully, Cathaoirleach, Louth County Council said: “It is vital that as many individuals and communities in the county as possible share their thoughts and opinions with Louth County Council as we look to shape Louth’s future. I would encourage as many people as possible to go and have a look at the draft plan which is available for inspection at numerous

locations throughout the county and to make a submission on any aspect of it that interests them”. Written submissions and observations on the draft plan may be made between Monday, October 6 and Wednesday, December 17. All interested parties are entitled to make submissions/observations including children or groups representing children’s interests.

All such submissions/observations received within the statutory period will be taken into consideration prior to the making of the plan. The next phase of the plan making process is to prepare a Manager’s Report on those submissions/ observations received. The Manager’s Report alongside the draft plan will then be considered by the local councillors.
