Secret Store gig gets town rocking By Paul Byrne and Niamh Kirk
MUSIC lovers in Dundalk descended upon the Quay in their droves on Saturday evening as word quickly spread that Ellie Goulding and Hozier were to play a secret gig in the Spirit Store as part of Guinness Amplify. Social network sites went into overdrive on Saturday evening around 4pm as word got out that two of the hottest acts around were confirmed to play a very special gig in the Spirit Store. Music fans rushed down to the popular George’s Quay venue with news that the gig tickets would be handed out on a first come first served basis to the first 220 people to make it down to the Spirit Store. Mark Dearey, owner of
Ellie Goulding and Hozier playing for the lucky fans in the Spirit Store
the Spirit Store, was delighted with how the event turned out and was proud that his venue had been chosen to host the prestigious gig.
“There was such a buzz about the place on Saturday”, recalls Mark. “It was almost like a hurricane passing through the quay as people de-
scended upon us in droves once the word got out. We’ve had representatives from Guinness visit us a couple of times Continued on page 11

People struggling to get on housing list despite number of unoccupied homes

A DAY TO BE REMEMBERED SHOWTIME PERFORMANCE @ 2.00 & 5.00
A TOBERONA resident has asked Louth County Council to explain why single fathers and mothers are struggling to find suitable accommodation despite there being a number of properties boarded up for months in his area. Luke Martin a long time campaigner for single fathers says that there are a number of houses in Oldbridge estate and Riverwell Close that have been boarded up for months and has asked the council to do more to get these houses back into circulation more quickly. “I’ve had single fathers and single mothers coming into me telling me that they are finding it impossible to find suitable accommodation from the council and at the same time they are looking at these perfectly fine houses boarded up for months on end. It just doesn’t take any sense”, explained Luke.

Luke Martin is calling for action on unoccupied homes
“There are single fathers out there who just want somewhere to live where they can take their children overnight and spend some time with them rather than having to meet them in McDonalds or whatever for a couple of ours during the afternoon. Anytime they go to the council looking for suitable accommodation they get put off and find it hard to get any satisfaction from them”,
added Luke. Luke has asked that a system be put in place whereby local councillors are immediately made aware of any house that is unoccupied. “The system is unfair for single fathers as if they leave the family home and their name is on the house they are not entitled to have their name on any housing lists. “As well as this it is
nigh on impossible to get a chance to sit down with somebody in the housing section and talk face to face with someone. They seem to be at meetings every day. I think one day a week should be set aside for the housing officer to meet with the public and listen to their concerns”, urged Luke. At the time of going to press there was no response from Louth County Council.

Decision on drink driving case delayed for week A MAN who was over the limit for driving when he was involved in a traffic accident was told he would have to wait for a week to see if he was successful in a bid to have the drink driving charge dismissed. Barry Wiseman of Castleroche, Hackballscross, argued through his solicitor, Niall Lavery, that an error on the Certificate of Analysis constituted a fatal flaw in the prosecution case and that the charge should be dismissed. The Gardai accepted that the time at which
the sample was provided should have read 12.46 pm, rather than 12.46am, but in direct evidence gave the correct time. Judge Flann Brennan stated that he wished to think about the matter and adjourned the case until September 17. The court heard that on July 12, 2013, Gardai were alerted to a two vehicle traffic accident on the Castletown Road. The defendant was driving one of the cars and when the Garda spoke to him she noticed that his speech was slurred, there was a
smell of alcohol and he was unsteady on his feet. He made a comment that he had only one pint in Beagans Pub. At 12.46pm a blood sample was taken by the doctor at Dundalk Garda Station and later revealed that he was over the limit for driving. In response to questions from Mr Lavery, the investigating Garda accepted that there was an error on the certificate and stated that damage to the cars had been minimal. The driver of the second car gave evidence
and stated that on that day she was in traffic heading towards the Castleblayney Road when she noticed a car approaching very fast and realised it wasn’t going to stop. It clipped the rear of her car and caused €4,000 worth of damage to her vehicle. In asking the judge to dismiss the charge, Mr Lavery stated: “I say there is a fatal flaw in the Certificate of Analysis. It is a necessary component of the prosecution and because of that flaw the prosecution must fail”.
Story time at development centre
Tell me your story - Carmel Crawford of newzmonkeys.com and Helen Kuyper swap business stories
It was story time this week at the Regional Development Centre, the north east’s enterprise and innovation hub based at Dundalk Institute of Technology. No, the business people weren’t sitting around listening to stories. They were learning how to craft
and develop the story of their business. “Developing an engaging story and narrative for your business can be a very important part of its development. Storytelling is one of the most important but underutilised tools in an entrepreneur’s armoury” explained
Aidan Browne, Incubation Centre Manager at the RDC. “The story you tell about your company can help to engage the audience, promote awareness of your product and drive sales in the marketplace.” Funded by the Honeycomb Creative Works programme,
the storytelling workshop was delivered by renowned trainer Helen Kuyper. Hailing from The Netherlands and on her first training assignment in Ireland, Helen is a Story Junkie she travels the world looking for stories and new ways to share them.

They are going to have to weigh up the negatives and positives and decide which is best for them. But they might be isolated but then again if they stay with Britain they could be dragged down with them.
It’s going to be a close run thing but I think they’ll go for it in the end. There will be financial effects to their decision you’d imagine but I think they’ll squeeze it through.
The Scottish people are being conned by Alex Sammond. If they do win independence it won’t mean anything as it just means they will be ruled by Brussels rather than London.
I really hope they get it. I worked in Scotland for a while on the oil rigs and they own plenty of oil which will give them a solid foundation with which to go out on their own.
The Scots are proud people so it would be great to see them do it. However, I think that they will get cold feet in the end and vote against it when they weigh up the financial implications.

On Your Bike raises €80k By Niamh Kirk
A group of cyclists from Dundalk have raised €80k for the Irish Cancer Society and the North Louth Hospice by cycling across Ireland to Co Clare. The On Your Bike, Cancer! was set up in the memory of Stephen Carroll who passed away last year after a battle with cancer. Stephen’s family and friends were extremely grateful to both the Hospice and the ICS for the care that Stephen received and wanted to repay the kindness they were shown. Together the community of people bound by Stephen’s memory raised €60k before the cyclists set out and a further €20k since. “Originally it was a bit of therapy, family and friends supporting each other. When you missed him the most, when you were at your lowest they were there. The support for the family and then the community coming out and helping us hit those targets, was incredible”,
Stephen’s brother David, sister Michelle, wife Breffnie, sister Adele, father Ian leading the pelathon out of Blackrock
explained Stephen’s sister-in-law, Kerrie Carroll. Stephen had wanted to spend his last days at home, with his family and without the care of the North Louth Hospice it may not have been possible. “We just wanted to give something back,” she said. “The amount of money raised is not only a testament to his character but also how cancer has touched so many lives in the community, everyone wanted to help because they didn’t know when they might need the services themselves,” said Kerrie. The team of 45 cyclists hopped on
their bikes in Blackrock last Wednesday and cycled the 360km to Liscannor, with stops and celebrations along the way. The community of Blackrock came out to wave the cyclists off and lined the main street with flags and banners. “There was a great atmosphere, it sets us up for the cycle,” said Kerrie. Stephen’s father Ian, joined the cyclists as they began their journey, and rejoined toward the end, cycling one of his son’s bicycles. As did Stephen’s eldest son Senan, who led the team of cyclists and fundraisers to the end of their journey. “It was emotional
even taking the bikes out of the van. There were a lot of tears and hugs as everyone finished and celebrations afterwards,” said Kerrie. There are a number of events during September and contributions to the fundraiser are still open online through the mycharity website. A 177km lap of Louth took place over the weekend with Cuchlainn Cycling Club helping to raise even more funds for On Your Bike, Cancer! A four mile road race takes place on Saturday September 27 at 6.30pm and participants can register online at http:// register.sportstiming.ie/ ps/event.

in Brief Tried to prevent arrest
A man who tried to prevent his friend being arrested on suspicion of drink driving was fined a total of €200 when he pleaded guilty to public order charges at Dundalk District Court. The court heard that on August 22, Gardai responded to a report of a traffic accident, when Pawel Zuk of 29 Tain Court, Bridge St, attempted to prevent them arresting the driver of a car involved. He was aggressive and it took three Gardai to arrest him. The defendant’s solicitor stated that Mr Zuk is a Polish national who had been living and working in Ireland. His circumstances deteriorated as his relationship broke down and he became unemployed. He fell into depression and on the day drank took much while on medication. Judge Flann Brennan imposed a fine of €100 on charges of intoxication in a public place and threatening and abusive behaviour.
Cyclists take on Lap of Louth for charity
Cyclists on the Lap of Louth
On Saturday last Dundalk’s Cuchulainn Cycling Club, under the guidance of Barry Rogers, Francis Dollard and their committee, organised a cycle in aid of the cancer supporting charity On Your Bike. The cycle was christened the ‘Lap of Louth’ and took in all the highlights of the Wee County. Over 100 local cyclists gathered at 8.30m on Saturday morning and started their journey by heading North taking in Carlingford, Omeath
and the infamous Davy’s Climb up to the Long Woman’s Grave. The riders then headed out through Faughart and onto Brida-Chrin, where club members Ray Fedigan and Karl Dolan hosted all 100 riders in their bike shop, The Bike Station. After refuelling on coffee and freshly made scones the riders thanked their gracious hosts and headed for Hackbalsscross. The 170km route finished up through Ardee, Collon, Drogheda and
finally the scenic route home along the coast. Fresh from her world championship medal winning ride in the USA, Eve McCrystal was back in the Irish colours, racing as part of the Irish team in the 5 day international race, Rás na mBan. Eve went into the race as one of the favourites, despite strong international teams from America and Europe. However bad luck was to befall Eve when she endured a nightmare day on stage 3. A puncture,
crash and another mechanical problem saw her lose time. A strong ride in the individual time trial and the remaining stages did she her make up some time. With the racing all done for the year the next event on the calendar for the club is definitely a leisure event, when on Saturday September 27 the riders will be riding to the outskirts of Belfast for their annual overnight trip. Details can be found on www. dundalkcycling.com
Ice bucket challenge continues to raise money The dynamic duo of Theresa Bashford and Garry Warnock who completed the ’12 Pubs Ice Bucket Challenge’ in aid of Motor Neuron Disease Ireland. The organisers are still counting up the money donated during their fundraising effort that took place on Sunday last on Park Street. Thresa and Gary took on with 12 ice bucket challenges in a row with the help of 11 bars on Park Street. Starting at the Fane, the two challengers had their first dowsing in the icy water and a team of collectors in tow. The establishments and the patrons of the pubs donated generously as Theresa and Garry sprinted along Park Street to the waiting stools and buckets of ice outside each of the bars. “It was very tough, I didn’t realise I could run so fast. It took us about 35 mins to get

down Park Street, with the staff waiting for us outside the bars with their ice buckets. They would just fire it over us and we would run on to the next one.” Starting at the Fane where Theresa’s son kicked off the challenge, freezing and soaked, they ran to Ridleys, up to Courtneys, Brubakers, Jimmy’s The Phoenix, the Punters and then over to the Bartender, to McEntegarts, Parks and finally back to Fane for a final dowsing that was bought for €100. The order of Malta were on hand to make sure the two contestants were safe and thankfully there no major incident, just a thermal blanket on
hand to warm Gary and Theresa up. So far a total of €1,000 has been raised and the collection boxes will stay in the bars for another two weeks to boost the funds. “We had great support so far and we are hoping to have a final count in two to three weeks. The boxes will stay on the pubs’ bars because every little helps.” We had a brilliant day and want to thank the collectors for helping and everyone who donated. The grand total will be known in a few weeks and it is hoped that an official presentation will take place in the coming weeks.

The young organic gardeners at Dulargy National School have enjoyed bumper crops in their school garden this year. They have been harvesting carrots, turnips, potatoes, chard and kale since returning to school after the holidays, with all the food going home for their families to enjoy. The Gardening Project in the school is now in its fifth year and going from strength to strength. Co-ordinated by parents Roisin Cotter, Terri McKeown and Eileen McGeown, and funded through the Dulargy Parents
Association, the project gives each child in the school the opportunity to sow seeds and watch their plants grow, until they are ready to be brought home. Each class grows flowers or vegetables and everything is
grown organically. This year Junior Infants grew sunflowers, Senior Infants grew peas, 1st class grew courgettes, 2nd class grew pumpkins, 3rd class grew ‘All Blue’ and Sante potatoes and enjoyed some ‘blue
crisps’ made from the ‘All Blue’ potatoes in class, 4th class grew carrots and turnips, 5th class grew rainbow chard, red kale and scallions and 6th class grew rocket, lettuce, radishes, mustard, coriander and beetroot.

Carrying iron bar
A man who was found to be carrying an iron bar in the early hours of the morning was given the chance to serve 200 hours Community Service instead of a prison sentence. Patrick English of 111 Oakland Park, Cox’s Demesne, Dundalk, was stopped by Gardai at 2.20am in Ashling Park on January 3, 2013. Solicitor, Conor MacGuill, stated that on that occasion his client came to the attention of Gardai due to an injury he had received. It was during the course of their enquiries that the search was made and the iron bar found. He added that the defendant hopes to sit his Leaving Cert and has followed through on the advice of the Probation Service. Judge Flann Brennan said he would impose 200 hours of community service in lieu of a nine-month sentence.
Blackrock win Tidy Towns sliver ing agencies including Louth Leader Partnership. “We are very fortunate indeed to have such co-operation from the residents, businesses and organisations in Blackrock because this could not have been achieved through the efforts of Tidy Towns alone. I would like especially to acknowledge the help and support of Mary Murtagh from Louth County Coun-
cil, and of course we have the most dedicated CE Scheme people in the whole country” he added. The committee is already planning how they will go about regaining the gold medal in next year’s competition, but John Horan reiterated that the primary objective of Blackrock Tidy Towns is to improve the village for the benefit of residents and visitors.
Blackrock has been awarded a silver medal in the 2014 national Tidy Towns competition. The award was announced at a ceremony in The Helix in Dublin on Monday September 8. The Tidy Towns committee had hoped that the gold medal won for the first time last year could be retained, but are nevertheless very pleased with the silver award, explained a spokes-
person. “Naturally we are a little disappointed but a silver medal is a major achievement for any centre. The village increased its points again this year and is now in the top five per cent of the 850 towns and villages in Ireland which participated in the competition, and with Tallanstown and Knockbridge remains at the top of the table for County Louth.”
As well as the silver medal, Blackrock also took a national award for Waste Management as a result of a series of initiatives undertaken in the village, many in conjunction with the local schools, and including the Green Home programme. Blackrock Tidy Towns chairman John Horan congratulated everyone in the village who contributed towards this outstand-
ing result, including committee members, litter patrollers and other volunteers, the CE Scheme under supervisor Pat Rafferty, Tús scheme workers, the Probation Service, RehabCare, residents associations, businesses, Louth County Council, all sponsors including Haggardstown Garden Centre, Tiernan’s Centra, Rock Cabs and Brendan Watters Insurances, and fund-
EBay and PayPal opened their doors to local businesses from Dundalk and the local region last week to give them the opportunity to develop their knowledge of online commerce. The event, the eBay Inc. Online Masterclass, was organised in conjunction with the Dundalk Chamber and leading experts in the field of online sales and payments provided advice and support. More than 35 local
businesses attended the class, which explained how to turn browsers into buyers, capitalise on future payment trends and increase online sales through PayPal. Louise Phelan, Vice President of PayPal’s Global Operations in Europe, Middle East and Africa, said, “Businesses in our local area are facing many challenges but we need to talk positively, act positively and be
perceived as such. There are some great companies in Dundalk leading the way. The fact that we were able to announce the creation of another 400 jobs recently in Dundalk is testament to the facilities and the workforce available in Louth. The Dundalk Chamber does fantastic work on the ground to support local businesses and it was great to be able to partner with them on this initiative.

in Brief Stole baby monitor
A former heroin addict who pleaded guilty to stealing a baby monitor is attempting to change his ways to allow him to be a better father to his children. Mantas Jurevicius of 63 Park St, Dundalk, appeared at the local District Court arising out of an incident on Friday December 20, 2013. The court heard that on that day, the defendant entered Dunnes Stores at The Marshes, took a baby monitor valued at €81 and left without paying. The property was recovered. Solicitor, Michelle Murphy, stated that her 26-year-old client, who is a Lithuanian national with three children, has had a problem with a heroin addiction. However, following this incident he went on a methadone programme, and is now clean. Ms Murphy added that he has gained maturity, taken on board the fact that he needs to be a father to his children and hasn’t offended since. Judge Flann Brennan convicted Mr Jurevicius of theft and imposed a €100 fine.

Spirit store gig has town rocking

Woman with serious alcohol problem fails to avail of chance A woman who was described as having a serious problem with alcohol was sentenced to five months in prison after breaching a safety order on four occasions inside six weeks. Linda Gernon, whose address was given as Drumbilla, Kilcurry, Dundalk, appeared at Dundalk District Court where she pleaded guilty to the offences on July 21 and August 21, 24 and 28 at Drumbilla.
She had previously been given a three month suspended sentence in July. Insp Martin Beggy accepted that the defendant was in a difficult situation but that she had breached bail continually despite being given latitude by the Gardai. He pointed out that the order had been breached eight times since March and sometimes within hours or days of a court
appearance. Solicitor, Peter Lavery, stated that it was a very sorry situation and that his client had not come to Garda attention until February this year after her son had been given a prison sentence, and that she has a serious problem with alcohol. “She was previously of good character but needs to deal with her addictions. She has an appointment to meet
a counselor in prison as she knows she is not coping very well”, added Mr Lavery who stated that his client had been in custody for nearly four weeks. Judge Flann Brennan brought down the suspended sentence and imposed sentences of five months in relation to the other matters, all concurrent. The judge fixed recognisances in the event of an appeal.
continued from page 1 over the last few months and we were obviously delighted we were picked to host Hozier and Ellie” added Mark. “The fact the Spirit Store was chosen to hold the event pretty much validated the investment we put into our new venue recently. “If that hadn’t have happened we obviously wouldn’t have been picked to host this gig. We’ve known this was happening for a while now but we couldn’t tell anyone and I’d been hearing rumours surfacing all week with people guessing various acts that were going to be playing here. “It was great to finally get the word out that Ellie and Hozier were coming to Dundalk and to see the excitement the event created. “We had the 2FM roadcaster down for the
gig and it was great to get a bit of positivity about the town. I believe the pubs around Seatown had great crowds as well for their events and I was delighted to hear that”, noted Mark. Ellie Goulding and Hozier played to 220 lucky fans but those that didn’t secure tickets stayed on to soak up the electric atmosphere and welcome the artists as they walked down Georges Quay. The windows of the upstairs venue were thrown open so the crowds below could listen into the performances. Fans of Ellie Goulding who hadn’t bagged a ticket or were too young to go to the show were not deterred from seeing the singer and gathered at the barriers to the stage door. The singer stopped to sign autographs, greet fans and take photos on her way in and out of the venue
and on stage spoke of how touched she had been by the warm welcome. She is probably the most mainstream pop artist that the Spirit Store has hosted and the singer put on a spectacular show. Given the Spirit Stores renown for being an excellent venue for indie, rock, folk and blues Goulding could have delivered one of her soulful acoustic. But much to everyone delight in the Spirit Store it was a pop-powerful performance fit for any festival. The Best Female Solo winner at this year’s Brit Awards danced and sang her way through some of her biggest hits to date including Starry Eyed, Burn, I Need Your Love and Lights. The crowd danced and sang with her celebrating this memorable and truly special, surprise, star-studded night for Dundalk.

The Fairways hotel was awash with red recently as Dundalk dancing school Scoil Rince Móna Ní Rodaigh celebrated a year of astounding successes in the world of competitive Irish dance. This past 12 months have seen the school once again confirm its place as one of the world’s finest as dancers were crowned Ulster, Irish National and World Champions. Saturday night saw the dancers, their parents
and their teachers take to the tiles in an effort to celebrate all the hard work and, of course, the rewards they reaped in return. The evening began with a presentation of certificates to all dancers who had participated in ‘Grade examinations’ earlier in the day. Far from the stereotypical ‘feis’ world, grade exams test the dancers’ skills in a more conventional exam setting and students were then presented with
acknowledgements of the many successes throughout the year. In particular however the school was celebrating the massive haul of four World Globes which were won at the World Championships in London earlier this year. From the youngest agegroup (sub-minor U11) to Senior, there were two third place globes, Dundalk Dancing School Scoil Rince Ni Rodaigh one second place and certificates depicting the After a tremendous many of the school’s the ultimate price for the grades which they had pre-party traditional multi talented dancers, Junior Mixed ceili (u16) achieved. music session, featuring festivities began with – World champions.
An incredible cake to celebrate the school’s achievements was provided by Joanne Brodigan of Londis, Quay St and presentations were made to the world champions from their teachers. This was followed by a repeat performance of the teams winning dance and a ‘step down the line’ from the school’s students. This was then followed by dancing of a different kind with letting their hair down.

THERE are concerns that Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital may lose beds in the coming months after pre budget submission were leaked. It was reported that emergency department opening hours could be cut and lose as many as 10 beds as the HSE’s budget tightens once again. Cuts of 5% were said to be proposed, equating to hundreds of millions of euro.
The level of patients waiting on trolleys in Our Lady of Lourdes has doubled in only 12 months. Last August there were 165 patients who were left on trolleys because the hospital did not have the resources to facilitate them. This August there were 346. The Irish Nurses and Midwives Association who analysed the national figures said that they confirmed an increasingly negative trend. They said the figures,
the increased level of overcrowding and loss of dignity to patients, represent a dire warning for the entire health system and the Government, as the traditionally busy period of autumn/winter approaches. The INMO say the level of overcrowding is as a result of an increasing demand and illustrates the immediate need for additional bed capacity (both acute and continuing care) to deal, properly, safely and respectfully, with admit-

Four players from Dundalk FC, four more from Drogheda FC and another from Louth GAA were welcomed by President Denis Cummins as the first recipients of the new Sports Scholarship scheme. These students will study a range of degree programmes
including Sports, Exercise and Enterprise, Accounting and Finance, Business and Management and Health Sciences. The programme is managed by Sports and Society officer Derek Crilly who said, “For a small county, Louth produces more than its fair share of talented sports people. We are committed here at DkIT to nurturing that talent and providing opportunities for
athletes to pursue their careers whilst fulfilling their academic potential. If anyone wants to find out more about the scheme they can do so by emailing me at sports@dkit.ie. ”

ted patients requiring in-patient care. There were calls to reject further cuts in health budget. A spokesperson described the figures as “very stark and disturbing” and added that “any talk of further bed closures, as a result of an inadequate health budget, must be rebuffed and rejected outright”. The government must also, in approaching the budget for 2015, acknowledge the extent of this crisis

and stop pretending that the health service can do more with less. Liam Doran, INMO General Secretary said it was vital to put the patient first. “There is no choice but to open closed beds, immediately, and address the staffing crisis. The winter is coming and we must prepare accordingly. “Therefore, the patient comes first and budgets must respond to need not bureaucrats.”

Man hopes to get treatment in jail A man who pleaded guilty to a variety of offences at Dundalk District Court was remanded in custody to allow him the opportunity to avail of treatment. Michael Murden of 529 Ashling Park, who has a number of previous convictions, will appear again before the court on October 1. The court heard that on January 23 a resident in Castleross heard a noise in his house at 2.30am and when he went downstairs he saw the defendant half way through his kitchen window before he fled the scene. The following day the man’s car was stolen and it was discovered that the keys were
missing. On January 5, 2014, a man was delivering pizza to Ashling Park and a man came to the door and took the pizza without paying. When he returned to his car he was approached by a man wearing a scarf who demanded money and the keys of his car. During the course of the incident the scarf fell off the defendant’s face and the delivery man recognised him as the man who took the pizza. At 2.40am Gardai came across the car in which the defendant was a passenger. He said he didn’t know the car was stolen and initially denied being involved in the burglary.
On July 15 the defendant went into the Maxol filling station on Castletown Road and poured petrol on the ground and set it alight, but Insp Beggy explained that fortunately it burnt out. He repeated this at another pump resulting in a clean-up bill of €100. On July 13 Mr Murden had entered the filling station shop and stole beer to the value of €16. Solicitor, Peter Lavery, explained that his client was drunk on each occasion and that he was seeking treatment while in custody. Judge Flann Brennan adjourned the case until October 1.

Embracing peace together Louth Peace and Reconciliation Partnership are hosting their final event on September 22 in the Crowne Plaza Hotel. This event ‘Embracing Peace Together’ will provide an opportunity to reflect on the learning from Peace III and will also take a look at what education has to contribute to building a peaceful, cohesive and equal society in Louth. The Peace III Programme which concludes in September 2014 will be followed by the Peace 1V Programme for which details are now emerging. It is anticipated that the final stage of consultation relating to development of Local Authority Action plans for Peace IV will begin in
early 2015. “The Peace III Programme has supported projects which have contributed to a greater understanding of the complexities of cultural diversity and have assisted groups to become more conversant and aware of the impact of the Northern Conflict in Louth and conflict across Europe”, said Valerie Artherton Manager of Louth Peace and Reconciliation Partnership . The seminar guest speakers include Kathleen Lynch Professor of Equality Studies, School of Social Justice UCD and Andy Pollack former Director of the Centre for Cross Border Studies based in the University of Ulster.
They will look at the potential contribution of education to peace building on both sides of the border and priorities for the future. The origins of the Peace Programme when it began in 1995 were a direct result of the European Union’s desire to make a positive response to the opportunities presented by developments in Northern Ireland peace process during 1994, especially the announcement of cessation of violence. Anyone interested in attending the seminar on 22 September should contact carole.mcguffin@louthcoco.ie or catherine. wallace@louthcoco.ie on or before 17 September .

Postanowiliśmy w tym roku nieco ujednolicić nasze artykuły, tak by w każdym miesiącu dotknąć różnorodnej tematyki. A jednocześnie by zachować pewną systematyczność. Największy rozwój stroju to koniec XIX w. do I wojny światowej. Strój ludowy na Kujawach ma cechy właściwe szlachty i burżuazji. Ubrania szyto z dobrego gatunkowo sukna i jedwabiu, często sprowadzanego z zagranicy, dlatego były one bardzo kosztowne (jeden z najbogatszych ubiorów w Polsce). Stroje te powstawały na całym obszarze Kujaw. Mimo podziału tego regionu na zabór niemiecki i rosyjski, mimo niewątpliwych różnic społecznych, niejednolitych warunków gospodarczych oraz ekonomicznych wynikłych ze statusów prawnych, innych w części zachodniej i wschodniej, wszyscy Kujawiacy posiadali odświętne stroje niemal identyczne. Mężczyźni nosili długie sukmany z granatowego płótna, szerokie płócienne spodnie, w kolorze błękitnym lub w paski i czarne skórzane buty do połowy łydki.

Store September 25 in one of ten concerts throughout Ireland. In November 2011 Sofia Talvik set off on the
adventure of a lifetime, a journey that would include 37 states and over 250 concerts over the course of 16 months.
“Unmistakably Nordic in flavor, Sofia somehow still conforms to American interpretations of h er own original
acoustic folk music, a North Sea siren blending sparkle and melancholy in a visually-arresting solo presentation.”

New Hyundai i20
Peter Nash • Approved Repairer for all major insurance companies • 24-Hr Recovery • Replacement cars available
Kilcurry, Dundalk04
042 9327243/087 6873530 www.nashmotors.ie
Details of the new generation Hyundai i20 have been released and it is expected to go on sale in the new year. Hyundai have moved on a long way since the introduction of the i20’s predecessor the Getz in 2002. The European designed second generation i20 is gunning straight at the likes of the market leaders in the populated ‘B’ segment of cars with competitors such Ford Fiesta and Volkswagen Polo in their targets. The new car will be built at Hyundai’s plant located at Izmit in Turkey. The new Hyundai i20 has a bigger footprint than the current model at 4035 mm long x 1734 mm wide x 1474 mm high – which makes it some 40 mm longer and 24 mm wider. The result is more interior space and Hyundai claim that it can comfortably accommodate five adults with ease. It will swallow up 10 per cent more luggage with the boot space being increased to 326 litres with the seats in place – with the seats down this increases to 1042 litres. There is a choice of ei-
ther two petrol or two diesel engines, all of which Euro 6 compliant. The petrol options, are a 1.25-litre unit with either 75PS or 84PS output and a 1.4-litre which develops 100PS. The 1.4-litre is available with the choice of either a six-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission, where the 1.25-litre units have a five-speed gearbox. On the diesel front you can choose between a 1.1-litre 75PS or a 1.4-litre 90PS unit – both with a six-speed manual gearbox. Do not expect the 1.1-litre to be nippy as Hyundai are quoting a 0-62 mph
time of around 16 seconds. Hyundai haven’t confirmed fuel consumption or CO2 emission for any of the engines. There will be four trim levels, ‘Access’, ‘Comfort’, ‘Panorama’ and ‘LED’ – full details have yet to be confirmed. Although we do know, that there will be option of a dashboardintegrated 7-inch satellite navigation system, automatic folding door mirrors, front and rear parking assist, and smartphone docking integration. And that USB and auxiliary connectivity is fitted as standard and can be
specified with an integrated My Music function along with Bluetooth hands free, where up to 1GB of music can be stored and played Hyundai are introducing a lot of new technology into the new i20 including some segment firsts including hill start assist control, lane departure warning, front and rear parking assist, heated steering wheel, static bending headlamps and automatic defog system. All models will receive Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) and six airbags - front, side and curtain.
