Call for letter writer to come forward By Paul Byrne
GARDAI have called on the writer of two anonymous letters to come forward and assist in their efforts to solve the case of Ciara Breen’s disappearance. In the wake of Monday night’s Crimecall programme on RTE television, Detective Inspector Pat Marry who is leading the investigation, has once again appealed to anybody who knows anything about Ciara’s disappearance to come forward and do the right thing. “We have received a second anonymous letter which we believe comes from the same person who sent us the first one and we are very keen to talk to that person”, stated the detective inspector.
“We have already had some calls in the aftermath of Monday night’s Crimecall and we are currently going through them to see if there’s anything in any of them. The solving of this case lies in Dundalk and we’re appealing to anybody who knows anything at all to contact us. “Anybody who saw the utter despair on Bernadette’s face as she spoke about her only daughter couldn’t fail to be moved by what they seen. I’m hopeful that somebody out there will reflect on what they know and do the right thing and contact us”, he urged. Ciara went missing in February 1997 from her Bachelor’s Walk home which she shared with her mother Bernadette. Continued on Page 21

DUNDALK dog lovers are getting into the Christmas spirit by taking their pets to meet Santa Paws in the Long Walk Shopping Centre. The festive fundraiser, organised by the Louth Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (LSPCA), kicked off on Monday, December 15. “It’s a fun way of raising awareness about the work we do and getting our message out there,” said LSPCA Inspector Fiona Squibb. People can get their beloved pooches photographed with Santa Paws (LSPCA Chairman Paul Casey from Blackrock) in his grotto for just €5. “Last year we had a St Bernard in to get his picture taken alongside a newborn baby.
“It made for a great Christmas keepsake for the family,” said Ms Squibb. The three-day event is due to finish up on Wednesday, December 17. It is running from 11am5pm. Pictured are LSPCA volunteers Alice Minto, O’ Hanlon Park; Karen Cunningham, Riverside Drive, Red Barn’s Rd; Santa (LSPCA Chairman Paul Casey, Blackrock); and LSPCA Inspector Fiona Squibb, Armagh Rd with black Labrador/Springer cross Roxy. Car and house damaged in crash A man who was over the limit for driving crashed into a car parked in a driveway which also resulted in damage to the front of a house. As a result, Pat Martin of Toberona, Dundalk, appeared at Dundalk District Court where he pleaded guilty to charges of careless driving and criminal damage. The court heard that on May 11 last year, Gardai were called to Clan Chulainn Park where a vehicle had collided with a car
and pushed it into a house. The defendant, who had been driving the jeep, was processed for drink driving and was dealt with by the Fixed Charge Penalty System (FCPS). He was fined and banned from driving for six months. Damage to the vehicle was estimated at €1,100 which was reimbursed and damage to the house was estimated at €1,800. Solicitor, Roger McGinley, stated that his client took immediate steps to rectify the damage done to the house and car.
He added that the parties were known to each other and that is why he was at pains to cure the damage. He added that the 62-year-old unemployed bricklayer is a widower and added that at this stage of his life it is his intention not to appear before the court again. He is currently serving his driving ban. Judge Flann Brennan imposed a fine of €200 in relation to careless driving and €75 on each of two counts of criminal damage.

Rugby club earn replay
Dundalk Rugby Club will have to replay their AllIreland Junior Cup semifinal after playing out a draw with CIYMS Belfast on Saturday. The game in Belfast finished 25 points apiece and the rematch will take place on Saturday December 20 at the Mill Road. After a well contested first half the hosts were leading by 15-7 with Jonathan Williams scoring a try for Dundalk. Mike Bentley added a second shortly after the restart. With Ultan Murphy kicking well and Williams adding another try, Dundalk went into a strong position when leading by 25-18 entering the final ten minutes. However, the hosts finished strongly and scored a converted try to tie the game after 80 minutes. The completion rules allow for extra time to decide the outcome however on a fading December evening the referee was unhappy to restart the game for safety reasons.

Katie Matthews, Fabian Nunes and Estela Gjorreta at the St Louis trade fair
Dundalk Leader 17th December 2014
Students show a flair for business By Paul Byrne
Enterprising students in St Louis’ showcased their ‘mini companies’ last Friday as part of the school’s annual Trade Fair. Transition Year and Second Year students have been busy since September coming up with ideas for new products and the fruit of their labours were
on show all day Friday with a whole range of products on sale in the school hall. There was a diverse range of products on display during the trade fair including homemade chocolates, decorative lettering for children’s nurseries, a range of dog’s merchandise and hair and beauty products.
The appropriately named Eimear Shine was delighted with the response to her 100% natural coconut hair spray ‘Kioloa’ which she was selling at the fair for €5. The spray which conditions hair leaving it clean, healthy and shiny was a huge hit with Eimear’s fellow students. This year the junior cycle students also got involved in the trade fair with second year’s Caitlin Ellis, Katie Newell and Amy McKeown
showcasing their ‘Cover it Up’ business which provides a deluxe fabric book covering service. Teacher’s Paula Fitzsimons and Roisin Mallon who oversee the annual trade fair were delighted with the efforts put in by all the students and praised their ingenuity and creativity. “Once again the students have come up with some great ideas and there are some really good products on display today”, enthused Paula. “A large part of Tran-
sition Year Enterprise centres around the minicompany project which is done in conjunction with the County Enterprise Board”, explained Paula. Students get the opportunity to set up and manage their own business and learn how to work as part of a team. In addition to the minicompany project, students learn about entrepreneurial skills and characteristics and will look at successful entrepreneurs in the business world”, she added.
Santa Run count is still on-going By Tamara O’Connell
PARTICIPANTS in this year’s Dundalk Santa Run will have to wait for one more month for the amount of money raised to be revealed. Sponsorship money is still being collected and it is anticipated that the final total will be announced in January 2015, according to Dundalk Santa Run organiser, Jimmy Cumiskey. It is hoped that the final total will exceed the €50,000 raised by two combined Christmas charity events in 2013. Last year, the organising commit-
tee of the Dundalk Santa Fun Run and the business Christmas charity lunch, announced it raised over €50,000 including in-kind toys valued at €5,000. The combined total from the 2012 and 2013 Christmas fundraisers is €80,000. Over 6,000 people took to the streets dressed in Santa suits and hats for this year’s Dundalk Santa Run. Participants helped to raise money for 34 charities and smashed last year’s record in the process. Just under 5,000 locals turned out for the 2013 event.

Rotary Club’s Remembrance Tree In keeping with their continuing support for both International and local community based projects, the Rotary Club of Dundalk are this year opening their Remembrance Tree on Earl Street from Friday December 19 through to Christmas Eve. The spirit of the remembrance focuses on providing members of the public with the opportunity of treasuring the memories of special people in their lives by creating their own personal ribbon of remembrance and having it placed on the tree in a colourful garland. Memories evoke a range of human emotions which can be expressed for many reasons, such as the following: Loved ones who have passed away. Those suffering from illness or hospitalised at this time.
Families bereaved in tragic circumstances eg. road accidents or suicide. Victims of mental, physical or sexual abuse. The homeless and those living alone with no one to care for them. Family members in distant parts of the world whose absence is missed. Immigrants unable to return home to their families. People finding life difficult to cope with in these uncertain times. There is no cost associated with creating and attaching remembrance ribbons but voluntary contributions are invited from members of the public and all funds raised go to locally based organisations and charities and designated Rotary International humanitarian projects.

The Chairman of Dundalk Credit Union, Tom D’Arcy, told a packed and very successful AGM in the Town Hall on Tuesday night last, that Dundalk Credit Union had an excellent year and maintained its position and reputation as one of the strongest Credit Unions in the country at this time. “The payment of a competitive dividend of 1.5% on all shares while having one of the lowest personal loan rates (6.99% APR) of any Credit Union or financial institution in the country means good news for both savers and borrowers in Dundalk Credit Union”, explained Tom. Conor continues Blackrock Christmas capers Continued from Page 1 raising countless thousands of pounds for charity over the years. Conor’s charity, Crosscause, has been helping the people of Romania, Moldova and Ghana for over ten years and his St Stephen’s Day events are the charities main fundraiser each year. Over the years Conor has dressed up as Charlie Chaplin, a bee, Thierry Henry’s hand as well as hosting
his own version of The Gathering (which he labelled The Scattering) all in an effort to raise money for Crosscause. This year’s event sees him put an amusing slant on the water charges issue which has been dominating headlines in recent months. According to Conor the event will be a lighthearted affair and a million miles away from the heated political debates that have caused such unrest all over the country.
“The theme for this year’s fundraiser is practical ideas for water conversation and we are going to have a bit of fun with it and enjoy a bit of messing about on the beach as we do every St Stephen’s Day”, explained Conor. “We’ll set up on the beach at noon and the idea is we will illustrate various inventive ideas to get the best value from your household water. “The water theme will continue with a
band playing some of the biggest hits from ‘The Waterboys’. “All the money raised on the day is going towards Crosscause’s continuing project of bringing water to remote villages in Ghana West Africa. “This will take the form of drilling manual “boreholes” which are ideal and cost effective in Sub Sahara Africa”, added Conor The aim of the project is to bring bring clean water, and hence
upgrade health care to thousands and will be managed by Crosscause and their self funded volunteers. On the day an update on all project work during 2014 will be on display to be explained by Conor and his Crosscause friends. Everybody is welcome to come along and enjoy some fun for what is a very good cause. Events start on Blackrock beach at noon on St Stephen’s One of the manual wells provided by Crosscause in Ghana Day.

Family Notices
Dear Editor, Hello from The North Pole. It’s been snowing a lot here lately and everything is really white. I just wanted to tell all the good boys and girls that Rudolph and I are getting very excited about our Christmas Eve trip over to Dundalk when we will be delivering presents to all the good boys and girls in town. The Elves here have been very busy making lots of toys and games and it looks lke I will have to bring a bigger load than usual to deliver. This is because of all boys and girls but especially those in Dundalk who have been extra good this year. You know a very funny thing happened here yesterday. Mrs. Claus and I decided to go for a drive in our new snow sledge. So we put on our warm clothes and went racing up and down the glaciers. Even the Elves stopped working to watch us and they laughed and laughed when I fell out of the sledge and went rolling down the hill. But don’t worry, I will be fine by Christmas. Rudolph is getting really excited too and he has shining his nose extra brightly so he can find his way to Dundalk even in the dark. I have just finished checking my list again and I know what everybody in Dundalk wants. They all have been so good and I am very proud of them. Christmas will be here before you know it and as well as the presents they have asked for I will also have some surprises from them too. Please tell them all to be in bed especially early on Christmas Eve because I will be flying over Dundalk very early this year. Love, Santa.

Brendan Grace back with Pure Gold
One of Ireland’s favourite entertainers, Brendan Grace, will bring his latest show to the Fairways Hotel on Friday January 23. Amazing Grace is a catch phrase often applied to Brendan Grace and indeed very true in many respects. The genial and much loved family comedian is celebrating 42 years in the comedy
business and is now more popular than at any time in his career to date. Forty two years ago when the 20-year-old Dubliner set off on his solo career he could never have envisaged the road of life that lay ahead. Two years later a Geordie song called Cushy Butterfield sailed to No 1 in the Irish charts
and the rest is history. Brendan’s latest show features some brand new material and some old favourites from his vast repertoire over the last 42 years. A brilliant character actor, his ‘Bottler’ character is legendary and is now featured at every performance. Apart from his obvious star quality in all aspects
of his performance Brendan’s drawing power is enormous and the ‘House Full’ sign is the norm rather than the exception at his concerts. Brendan has a very special bond with Irish audiences and is much loved by young and old not least because he gives very generously of his time after each
Spirit Store is ready to rock Red-hot THIN LIZZY tribute act, LIVE AND DANGEROUS, pay a return visit to The Spirit Store in Dundalk, on Saturday December 20. The boys played their last Dundalk gig on Sunday May 4 at the same venue before a large and appreciative crowd, and their by now annual Christmas appearance there promises to be a night to remember. Main man Johnny Fox needs little introduction from his time as a member of the
legendary Thin Az Lizzy tribute band which, of course, also included renowned Drogheda axeman, Gordon ‘Flash’ Murphy. Johnny has seen and done it all; including touring with Thin Az Lizzy in the UK, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Italy, and the Netherlands. Guest guitarist, Ian ‘Speedo’ Wilson, has been playing guitar for over 25 years. He started playing when he first heard Ritchie Blackmore who struck just the right chord to
awaken something profound in the Belfastman. His musical roots are firmly embedded in rock, but he experiments with a bit of jazz from time to time, and tries to blend the two. Ian is playing selected dates with LIVE AND DANGEROUS when time and commitments allow. The band is completed by tribute band maestros, Phil Edgar on guitar and Eamon Ferris on drums, who cut their teeth in Belfast band, Tizz Lizzy.
Pupils from Monastery NS in Ardee taking part in their recent Christmas Show
concert. The ‘Meet and Greet’ is now very much part and parcel of each show and Brendan’s very down to earth approach is much appreciated by all. The tour coincides with the release of his new DVD ‘Pure Gold’ Brendan will appear a Tickets at Hotel Reception Tel. 042 9321500 and Ticketmaster.ie

The Irish Amputee Soccer team returned home from Mexico last week having done themselves proud in their very first World Cup tournament. Dundalk man Garry Hoey was a vital member of the Irish team as they took on Brazil, Uzbekistan, Kenya, Ukraine (twice) and Colombia during the eight-day tournament. Ireland failed to make the last 16 following three defeats in their group of death but competed very well when limiting a magnificent Brazil side to just two goals in temperatures that reached 32 degrees. Ireland were then put into the Copa Culiacan where they beat Kenya, drew with Colombia and lost to Ukraine to finish a highly credible 18th in the world. Having had a few days
to recover from the intense schedule Garry was able to reflect on what he called an incredible experience’. “The whole two weeks over there was fantastic. We were treated like celebrities with people asking to get their photo taken with us which was a bit surreal”, laughed Garry. We obviously had a really tough group playing Brazil and World Champions Uzbekistan but I think we competed well and considering how young we are as an association I think we can only grow and learn an awful lot from Mexico”, noted Garry. “Personally I’d have to say my highlight was scoring my first international goal which was an unbelievable feeling. We beat Kenya which was our first victory of the tournament and I scored so that was a really great feeling”, ,ad-
mits Garry. Just 24 hours after being on top of the world Garry experienced disappointment when he was harshly sent off against Colombia. However that decision was rescinded thanks to video technology leaving Garry free to play in the final game against Ukraine. Ireland finished the tournament as one of the highest placed debutants with Garry already looking forward to the next international tournament. “This whole experience has left us even more determined to get fitter and improve and it has been a brilliant learning curve for us to play against the very best teams in the world”, claimed Garry. “The reception the team got when got home to Dublin was fantastic and it was lovely to see the family again after the couple of

It is thought she sneaked out of her bedroom window to meet up with someone while her mother slept but tragically she never made it back home. Her mother Bernadette believes her only child was killed. Monday night’s Crimecall programme on RTE 1 featured a reconstruction of Ciara’s last known movements and also included a heartbreaking appeal for information from her mother Bernadette. “She said ‘Goodnight’ and I said ‘Goodnight pet, I love you’. And she goes ‘Mammy, don’t worry about anything, I love you, I’ll see you in the morning. I said, ‘Sleep tight sweetheart, see you tomorrow’. They were the last words we spoke”, revealed Bernadette. “I had one, just one little girl. My heart, my soul, my world. And just like that she was gone. I think she went out the front door and left the window off the latch to get back in. I sat the
whole night waiting for her to come back”, she added. When last seen Ciara was wearing a black leather jacket, blue jeans, a wine-col-
oured sweatshirt and a white T-shirt. Anyone with information can contact Dundalk Garda station on 042 9388400, or Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666111.
