Dundalk star shows positive side of sport By Paul Byrne

AFTER a weekend in which certain sports fans attracted negative publicity, Dundalk star Keith Ward was lauded for his generous gesture in recognising one of clubs most loyal fans. Immediately after Dundalk FC had won the EA Sports Cup in Oriel Park, Ward made Cillian Moran’s day when he gave his cup winning medal to the ardent Lilywhites supporter. The gesture was in stark contrast to the actions of Shamrock Rovers supporters who were accused of breaking a mourner’s nose and fracturing his eye socket as well as smashing his face with a beer can. Cillian Moran shows his delight at getting Keith Ward’s medal while Mark Rossiter holds aloft the EA Sports Paul McGee was attend- Cup Paul was standing outside in Coleman a son of Maura during his wife’s grandmother’s hooligans are alleged to have wake in Pearse Park when a hit him in a completely un- the garden of the late Maura ing her wake when a group of Continued on page 2 Coleman’s house with Eddie group of Shamrock Rovers provoked attack.

Blackrock golfer will watch Ryder Cup with great interest By Paul Byrne

Artisans Art Group

Blackrock man Mick Mandeville will be an interested spectator this weekend as he watches his former charge Paul McGinley lead Europe into action against the USA in this year’s Ryder Cup. 25 year’s ago it was Mick who was calling the shots as his talented Leinster side overcame Ulster in the Interprovincial Pro’s final. That victorious side included a 23 year old Paul McGinley who Mick describes as ‘a gent and a fantastic team player’ Mick, a very talented golfer in his day was chosen to captain Leinster in 1987 having made his name with the Louth senior team leading them to a magnificent four Senior All Ireland Golf Championships in a row between 1982 and 1985. Having taken up the Leinster captaincy in 1987 Mick delivered an Interprovincial Championship in 1989 with what he calls a special group of

Blackrock man Mick Mandeville (middle front row) with his former Leinster Golf team including Paul McGinley (front left).

players. “I was lucky enough to captain a fantastic group of players in 1989 including Paul McGinley, Barry Reddan, Declan Brannigan, Finbar Ronan and Mark and Frank Gannon. Paul obviously would be the best known now from that team and I have to say he was a gentleman and a fantastic team player. He turned pro shortly after that Interprovincial success and he went on to make a fine career for himself”, noted Mick. “I think he’s got

what it takes to be a great captain as well as he’s already made a tough decision in leaving his friend Padraig Harrington out. Unfortunately as a captain you have to make tough decisions and it is hard to keep everybody on the team happy” ,he added. Mick, who joined Dundalk Golf Club in Blackrock back in 1961 having caddied at the same venue from the age of 12, stopped playing golf 14 years ago but is still an avid follower of the game and he is confident that

McGinley can lead his European team to Ryder Cup glory. “Paul’s got a good head on his shoulders and I’m confident he has a better team to work with than his counterpart Tom Watson. I’m 75 years old now and don’t play anymore but I’d still watch it on television and have an interest in the sport. I’ve had some great days on the golf course as a player and a captain and it was a privilege to lead players of the like of McGinley”, explained Mick.

Speaking in the aftermath of the attack Paul McGee branded the Rovers supporters cowards and questioned why they were allowed to walk through Pearse Park by Gardai. “These animals should never have been allowed walk through Pearse Park in the first place” noted Paul. “We have asked the Gardaí why this was allowed to happen and they said they would get back to us”, he explained. “I was standing outside the house where my wife’s grandmother Maura was being waked and all of a sudden about 60 or 70 Shamrock Rovers fans came towards us throwing beer cans in the garden and goading us. It was completely unprovoked and completely out of order. “I got a can smashed into my face without any warning at all and I didn’t react because

them and there was only four men in the house altogether. If I reacted we all would have got attacked. I’ve never seen anything like this before and I’m disgusted by the actions of these animals. My kids were inside the house and they were crying after seeing their Daddy with blood pouring down his face. “I really can’t understand the mentality of these people.” added the angry father of three. Meanwhile, Dundalk midfielder Keith Ward made Cillian Moran’s day when he gave his cup winning medal to the ardent Lilywhites supporter. The 16 year old Dundalk supporter is no stranger to big sporting occasions having competed in the Special Olympics previously and his mother Labour senator Mary Moran admitted that she and her son were

wonderful gesture from Ward. “After the game Keith ran straight over to us and put his medal around Cillian’s neck and said ‘That’s for you to keep buddy’. “We were absolutely overwhelmed by Keith’s lovely gesture and Cillian hasn’t taken the medal off him since” laughed Mary. “Things like that restore your faith in mankind and I have to say all of this Dundalk team are an absolute credit to themselves and the club” added Mary.

A champion boxer told Gardai that he caught another man with a ‘lucky punch’ during an altercation in the early hours of the morning. The victim was left unconscious for a time after hitting his head on the kerb as a result of the blow resulting in him suffering two fractures to his skull and swelling to his brain. Judge Flann Brennan told Christopher Blaney of Wilkinstown, Navan, this was such a serious case that he hesitated before accepting jurisdiction as he adjourned the

case to December 3 for Community Service and Probation reports. He also ordered Mr Blaney to pay compensation. The court heard that on March 6, 2013, Gardai were called to an altercation in Rockfield Court involving a large number of people. The injured party received a blow to the back of the head and had to receive treatment from ambulance personnel. In evidence, Mr Rogers stated that he had suffered two fractures of his skull, had swelling to the brain and lost his memory for four or five

days. He still suffers from migraine, but added that he struck his head on a kerb as he fell. The defence solicitor stated that her 22-yearold client was arrested in September of last year and told Gardai that he must have hit him with a lucky punch and caught him on the chin. She added that Mr Blaney had a lot to drink on the night but apologises to the court and the injured party. He was deeply remorseful for the action which was out of character. The solicitor pointed

out that her client had worked since his Leaving Cert and that he has been involved in boxing since he was a child. He has won ten All-Ireland medals and one European medal, while it is his aim to seek Olympic qualification and to turn professional. In adjourning the case, Judge Brennan stated: “This is an extremely serious matter and I hesitated before accepting jurisdiction. He will have to pay compensation and a lot of it. This is a very serious injury”.

Peninsula tackles drugs issues

THERE will be a meeting in Mullaghbuoy Community Centre on October 1 at 8pm to discuss measures for tackling drug issues in the Cooley Peninsula. Speakers on the night will include Derek Russell from Roscrea County Tipperary, whose community also made a stand against drug pushers. Nora O’Donaghy from Turas Counselling Services, Dundalk, will also speak

on drug awareness, and give advice to parents on what to look for if they think their child is taking drugs. She will also discuss the devastation caused by drugs, and what to do if somebody is pushing drugs on your child or you. Sergant Eugene Collins, from Dundalk Garda Station, will give a presentation of the different type of drugs which are been pushed

on to our young people and will also discuss the problem of anti-social behaviour. Eugene will discuss the different means of how to contact the Authorities in confidence in relation to these matters. This meeting has been initiated by the community and all organisations in the Peninsula are invited to attend this meeting. It is very important

that local people and organisations do attend to show their support for their community. The objective of this meeting is to try and find out as a community how to deal with drugs and drug pushers in the Peninsula. The community feel it is time that we stand up as a collective against these pushers who are ruining lives, ruining families and stealing the life out of drug victims.

Dundalk win EA Sports Cup By Paul Byrne

Dundalk FC picked up their first trophy under Stephen Kenny on Saturday evening as they edged out Shamrock Rovers 3-2 in a thrilling encounter at a packed Oriel Park. Having been knocked out of the FAI Cup by Rovers just five days earlier this was somewhat of a revenge mission for Kenny’s charges and they got off to a wonderful start thanks to a magnificent Dane Massey free kick after just four minutes. However Rovers were on top for the remainder of the opening half and deservedly equalised through Jason McGuinness to send the teams in level at the break. Dundalk asserted their authority on the game early in the second half with a second goal from Massey to give Dundalk the advantage once more. With President Michael D Higgins watching on, Oriel Park was in full on party mode as Hoban rose high to head home Dundalk’s third after 49 minutes. Ciaran Kilduff headed home for Rovers with fifteen minutes to go to ensure a nervy ending but Dundalk held firm to claim the club’s first piece of silverware since the 2002 FAI Cup

triumph. Speaking after the game a delighted Stephen Kenny praised the character of the players and focused on the challenges ahead as his side continue their pursuit of the league title. “I think the players showed great character and grit to come out on top against Rovers. We didn’t play our best in the first half but we hung in there and we got our rewards in the second half where I thought we were very good” ,explained Stephen. “It was great to see such euphoria from so many generations of Dundalk fans and I was delighted for everybody involved with the club that we managed to win some silverware for them. The crowd were magnificent for us on Saturday and the players and staff really appreciated their support. The victory won’t do our confidence any harm as we ready ourselves for the final five games of our league season where we have a chance of bringing some more silverware back to Oriel Park.” ,he added. Dundalk’s relentless pursuit for a first premier division title since 1995 continues this Friday with a trip to the Belfield Bowl to face UCD.

Dundalk’s first cage white collar event By Paul Byrne

Dundalk based MMA gym ‘The Fight Pit’ are hosting the town’s first ever white collar (MMA) cage fighting event with all proceeds raised going to SOSAD. Niall McCabe owner of the Fight Pit says the event will give absolute beginners a chance to experience what it’s like to compete in a professional cage in front of a packed audience. MMA is one of the fastest growing sports in the world and the recent success of Conor McGregor has seen huge numbers in Ireland take up Mixed Martial Arts classes. The event will take place on November 28 in the Fairways Hotel and as Niall explains

all proceeds raied will go to the local charity SOSAD. “We decided we wanted to give a little back to our community so we are organising what I believe to be Dundalk’s very first White Collar MMA event. “Basically the idea is that we get a group of complete novices to sign up for six weeks of intensive training in a Mixed Martial Arts Cage Fight” ‘explained Niall. “This event is open to the complete novice with absolutely no experience whatsoever. The whole idea is to take you from zero to hero in eight weeks”, he added. Each competitor will learn to fight, developing skills in

thai boxing, kicking, grappling, strength & conditioning, throwing and reach a stage where they are ready for fight night. And as Niall points out the chance to fight in an electric atmosphere will be something that lives long in the memory for each competitor. “To be able to compete in a professional cage in front of family and friends in a packed to capacity facility is an experience each fighter will never forget. We will provide everything to make this a night to remember. You’ll have your own walk out music, lights and smoke, ring girls and your corner men and women. You will be matched only with someone who is of the same skill set.

Niall is keen to highlight the fact that as always safety is paramount during each fight and at no time will any of the competitors be at risk. Each fighter will only be matched with someone who is of the same skill set. There will also be an advanced fighter white collar event on the night for fighters who have some training and background in martial arts and boxing but not entirely mixed martial arts, in other words they won’t be a competitive MMA fighter. Tickets for this event cost €20 and can be bought from Costcutters in Clanbrassil St, Dundalk. All proceeds on the evening will go to SOSAD. Call Niall on 0894125096.

Teen upset over loss of games console

A man who became upset after his mother confiscated a games console ended up attacking his father and sister before being arrested by Gardai. As a result, Macauley Quilton of 21 Willowdale, Bay Estate, appeared before Dundalk District Court where he pleaded guilty to a charge of

threatening and abusive behaviour. The court heard that on August 9 this year, Gardai were called to 21 Willowdale, where the defendant was attacking his father and sister but he had left by they time the arrived. However, the 18-yearold returned a short time later and was refused access to the house.

The defence solicitor explained that the behaviour was borne out of a domestic incident as he lost his temper after his mother had confiscated a games console. However, he stated that the charge that resulted, along with a protection order sought by his parents had helped him get back on

an even keel. He is looking to get on a FETAC course and has the support of his parents who want him to stay at home. Judge Flann Brennan adjourned the case until November 26 for a Probation Report and told Mr Quilton that it is very important to stay out of trouble until that time.

New respite centre opens

The newly completed Children’s respite centre in Lordship opened its doors to its first residents on Thursday last and marks the culmination of nine years of planning. The facility will cater for up to eight children with disabilities and other health conditions in Louth between the ages of six to 18 years and will enable parents, carers and families have a break from the often challenging demands of providing full-time

care. The facility was officially opened in February and has already been busy during the intervening months, providing day respite services and summer camps to children and families in the Louth area. The centre has recently completed the necessary HIQA certification process to allow for overnight stays and will open on a phased basis initially, with four

beds operational on a Thursday to Sunday basis. The remaining beds will come on-line at a later date. Caroline Hanlon, from the Maria Goretti Foundation said: “The Hanlon family are delighted that HIQA have finally approved the respite centre at Lordship enabling us to welcome families to the facility for the first time as residents”. “This is the culmination of a dream that was passionately

held by the late John Hanlon RIP, and as we prepare to greet the children who will use the centre we invoke his memory and embrace his inspirational vision and courageous determination”, added Caroline. The services in the centre will be delivered by RehabCare, whose community services manager stated that it was very pleasing to have reached this point where the first residents staying in the facility.

Quinns retain link to Irish retail giant The Superquinn chain may be consigned to retail history but one of Dundalk’s longest established businesses is helping to maintain a link with the shop’s original signage in the town. It was 1960 and Feargal Quinn, entrepreneur and pioneer of the supermarket concept in Ireland, opened the doors of his first Quinn’s Supermarket on Clanbrassil Street. The signage from that original outlet was acquired by Quinns Funeral Home in the 1970s and has now been restored to their premises after a recent facelift. Booklet provides help for families coping with dementia

A new locallydesigned resource for carers and families coping with dementia is set to be launched by the County Louth Citizens’ Information Centre (CIC). The 72-page booklet, Dementia and Memory Loss: Supports and Services in the Louth Area, will be launched by CIC manager Marie Hayes at the third Louth Age Friendly Business Fair which will take place in the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Dundalk on Sunday October 5 from Noon to 5pm. “We produced a booklet last year for people in Louth dealing with cancer and from that people asked us could we do something similar for dementia, so that is where the idea

came from,” said Marie, who is from Dundalk. “We pooled all the information that was available and contacted the Netwell Centre and the Alzheimer’s Society of Ireland and the local Birches Daycare Centre who sent a draft copy to

a family support group for review before it was published. “The whole idea is to put all the information needed by families affected by dementia into one place that is easy to access.” The booklet is

available in the CIC offices in Drogheda and Dundalk and is available for download from www.agefriendly. ie. “This booklet will help someone who has been diagnosed with dementia, or their family members, put in place certain measures like power of attorney or help sort their financial affairs. “There are also ideas for soft supports contained within the booklet that will help people with dementia to continue to live at home.” Marie will also be among the guest speakers at the upcoming Age Friendly Business Fair and will talk about dementia supports.

The County Museum, Dundalk is celebrating being named as the Best Local Authority Museum in this year’s Irish Public Sector

Magazine Awards. Curator Brian Walsh was delighted with the honour, particularly as it was such an important year for the service.

“Of course, we were all absolutely delighted to hear that we had won the award. It is, I suppose, particularly special to receive this

recognition in our 20th anniversary year.” Mr Walsh added that the award reflects the quality projects and exhibitions undertaken.

Lucky Number 13 for Team Torres The number 13 proved lucky for Team Torres’ Andrew McGahon (pictured) when on the 13th of this month, in his 13th competition of the year, he claimed as his own the fighting arena in Liverpool’s Jubilee Sports Centre during the Northwest BJJ Open. The morning started with the NoGi section where he was entered in the hotly contested under 70kg event. En route to the final Andrew displayed a versatile array of submissions in the prelims to reach the final where he faced seasoned competitor Richie Bough of East Coast Jiu Jitsu. Andrew continuing the trend of the morning, submitted his opponent with a Rear Naked Choke to take the top podium position and a prestigious gold medal. After a short rest

Andrew yet again took to the mats in the afternoon to compete in the Featherweight Blue Belt GI event, where he was up against some very tough fighters, and where he eventually claimed his second medal of the day when he fought Christopher Newman of Checkmat BJJ in the finals. In a dramatic final, Andrew

was just pipped for the gold medal but nonetheless took a well earned silver. The championships attracted elite athletes from all over Britain and Ireland and Andrew’s outstanding performance showed he was worthy of his mantle as an aspiring prince of Irish Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. This competition was

yet another stepping stone on Andrew’s inexorable march towards European Glory when he represents Ireland along with some of his TeamTorres team mates in the European Championships which will be held in the Portuguese Capital of Lisbon in January of 2015. Andrew has been trained to international standard by his coach, Irish Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Judo ace, Sebastiao Torres. Acknowledging Andrew’s dedication and commitment to training Sebastiao remarked afterwards that “Andrew has trained hard and has developed as a well rounded fighter and his success at this event on the international stage shows that Irish BJJ is a growing force to be reckoned with on the International scene”.

The recently held AGM of the Dundalk and District Darts League started with the outgoing chairman Brendan O’Rourke thanking all players and sponsors for all their help and commitment through out the year. League secretary Niamh Brady stated that previous year had been a major success with the introduction of Tubourg as the league’s main, while the treasurer’s report was very positive. The committee and the attendance were happy to make changes to the constitution of the league which ensured maximum representation from the players of each division and prevented unfair advantage to any one venue on the league committee The floor was opened and numerous questions were answered before the committee stood down and the election of new officiers was undertaken. The new committee was made up as follows: Chairman - Brendan O’Rourke; Vice Chairman James Callan; Secretary - Niamh Brady; Treasurer Peter Neary; PRO - John O’Brien; Committee -Shane McArdle, Patrick Taaffe, John Grant, Niall McKevitt. A number of proposals were put forward in relation to the running of the league and some where successful and some where not. The most notable changes for the league are the following: Premier division Format is now six players who will play a game of the best of five x 501. An additional change is that the restriction on county players has been further Clarified in that only players who have represented their county in AllIreland events or the Northern Irish equivalent will be classified as county players. Those who did not play in such events will be known as county panelists and will be unrestricted in DDDL.

Dundalk Martial Arts Club is a club that is going from strength to strength, and despite not yet being a year old, it is already producing champions. Six fighters from DMAC went to the NI Open and between them they gained nine titles. Catherine Pearson, Catherine

O’Grady, Martina Goss, Sean O’Hare, Patrick Farrelly and Christian Farrelly all returned with medals after a series of fine performances from club members over the course of the day. DMAC members wish Catherine O’Grady the best of luck this year while she trains in Russia.

From page 1 A spokesperson for the Ballymakellet and District Residents Group said there was a huge turnout for the meeting and explained what implications the re-opening of the quarry would have for local residents. “We were delighted with the attendance at last night’s meeting and we explained to each person how to lodge an official objection to the council to try and prevent this quarry re-opening”, she noted. “It is proposed that the traffic from this quarry will exit the quarry down the R174 through Dawestown, Jenkinstown and out at Rockmarshal. The effects of this on our area would be detrimental. It’s proposed to have 42 truck movements per day, five and a half days per week 10 hours per day”, explained the group’s representative. “The roads along this proposed route are certainly not suitable for this kind of traffic. There have already been numerous accidents along this stretch of road due to the narrowness of part of the road. There are many families with young children travelling to the nearby schools and we also have the main bus routes for secondary school children who will be standing out along the road on these routes”, she added. “We have until next Thursday October 2 to lodge our objections and we’re hopeful that Louth County Council will listen to our concerns and stop this from happening” , she concluded.

NEW MAZDA MX-5

Mazda have officially unveiled the all-new Mazda MX-5 at a launch event in Barcelona, Spain. The new MX-5 will be on show at next month’s Paris Motor Show, its official public debut. In the MX-5’s twenty-five year history over 947,000 models have been sold, making it the best selling two-seater car of all time. The new model is some 100 mm shorter than its predecessor, 10 mm wider and is 20 mm lower. It uses the same KODO – Soul of Motion design language as the new Mazda3 and Mazda6. Weighing in some 100kg lighter than the old model and with a lower centre of gravity, it promises not

only to be quicker but to offer better handling. And it is equipped with Mazda’s latest SKYACTIV Technology, including specially tuned SKYACTIV-G petrol engines and the first rearwheel drive version of the SKYACTIV-Chassis. The rear-wheel are still powered by what is expected to be the choice of either a 1.5 or 2.0-litre power plant via a six-speed manual gearbox – there will be the option of an automatic.
