Dundalk FC are awaiting an explanation of the decision by UEFA to impose a fine of €18,000 before deciding in their next course of action. The club received notification from UEFA’s Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Committee that they had breached two rules during their recent European game against Hadjuk Split. and would receive a €18k fine. However, the club is believed to be exploring the possibility of appealing the fine but will not make any decision until they have studied the ruling. A spokesperson for UEFA told the Dundalk Leader that “The club was sanc-

tioned for the display of an illicit banner and insufficient organisation. Further information is currently not available, since the club has asked for written grounds of the decision and may still appeal". It is understood that one of the breaches relate to a Palestinian flag being flown by supporters during the game at Oriel Park on July 17. Prior to kick-off, a UEFA match delegate in Oriel had asked the club to have the flag removed, however, the flag appeared again during the game and UEFA see this a breach of their rules. It's understood that the Palestine flag is deemed political by UEFA because Continued on Page 14

Honouring Tiarnán’s memory will be benefit to other children By Eunan Whyte

The parents of a boy who passed away at the age of eight years are honouring his memory with a special fundraiser to help benefit other children who have to spend time in hospital. Tiarnán Levins, from Hunterstown, lost his brave battle with illness in April 2102, and his parents John and Rosemary, are organising a 5km family fun walk on Sunday September 14. Funds raised on the day will go towards purchasing an electric profile bed for the children’s ward in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda, as Rosemary explained there were none available when Tiarnán was in hospital. “Tiarnán spent two weeks in Drogheda be-

fore he passed away but they didn’t have an electric profile bed on the ward, and one had to be rented for him. The beds have electronic control to allow a patient raise their head or legs in order to make themselves more comfortable. “It was not the hospital’s fault that they didn’t have one so myself and John decided afterwards that we would do something about it. The beds are of huge benefit to patients, even for those suffering from minor ailments such as broken legs”, explained Rosemary. As a result, the Levins family organised a 5k run in September 2012 which raised enough money to purchase a bed for the hospital, and thanks to the generous support of the local com-

munity, they were able to do so again a year later. The beds have proved such a benefit to patients that John and Rosemary have decided to organise ‘Tiarnán’s 5k Family Fun Run/Walk’ for a third year to purchase another bed and also raise money for the hospital’s play area along with Ardee Hospice. The event will start

and finish at Hunterstown Rovers football field, with registration taking place at 11am. Poignantly, the route will take participants past Tiarnán’s resting place at Ballapousta Cemetery. Rosemary, who explained that entry is a donation of what people can afford, thanked the local community

for their support of the event. “The main reason we are able to hold the event again is down to the support of the local community, including our family, friends and businesses. “I would like to thank them all for their support as we all know that times are tough but we have been blown away by the

generosity of everyone”, she added. There will be refreshments for participants, including burgers, along with medals and a goodie bag for children taking part. For those interested in getting involved, or would like to offer help or sponsorship please don’t hesitate to contact John on 087 2256224.

The vast majority of Dundalk’s 18,000 labour force (59%), travel to work by car but about 16% of workers commute outside Dundalk using public transport. Had DkIT’s new term commenced, the number of commuters would have been considerably higher. The strike action was flagged for a long time leaving commuters time to prepare alternate routes or work arrangements. Some unions representing the transport workers took the action after a long running row over a series of cuts in the area. Industrial action was taken by SIPTU and the National Bus and Rail Union to make a stand against temporary pay cuts in the company. Irish Rail reported a loss of approximately €17m last year, which is the sum that is expected to be saved if the pay cuts go ahead. Transport Minister Paschal Donohoe, said that “every effort has

months of negotiations, with a number of interventions by the State’s industrial relations machinery, to resolve the matter. The action being taken by SIPTU and NBRU members will result in massive disruption on a number of fronts; it will cause considerable inconvenience to rail users, it puts jobs at risk at Irish Rail, and it will add to the further deterioration of the company’s financial situation”. “There can be no winners if this strike action goes ahead. It will contribute nothing to the company’s prospects or to furthering its role in serving the public,” he added. Iranrod Eirean have said that they are in considerable financial difficulty and could run out of money within the next 12 months. If the problems are not rectified, it could result in lay-off and closures. Matthews Coaches helped ease the bur-

increased demand. “We experienced a slight increase in numbers travelling this morning due to the rail strike, but we had provided five extra coaches so we could comfortably deal with any increased demand,” said Matthews.ie Fleet and Quality Manager Noel Matthews. Three more days of industrial action are planned by SUPTU and NBAR employees, a two day strike is planned over on Sunday and Monday September 7 and 8, as well as on Sunday September 21 which will cause delays the next morning.

Rail strike causes disruption for many local commuters Hundreds of commuters’ in Dundalk faced disruption on Monday morning as the rail and bus strike brought public transport to a standstill.

Scots pay visit to see economic border By Niamh Kirk

Experiences of border life in Co Louth are being used to gauge the potential challenges along the Scottish Border ahead of the referendum there this September. PRO of Dundalk Chamber of Commerce Paddy Malone explained that from an economic standpoint, the border can be a considerable obstacle. “Is the border good for

economic development? No. But whether Scotland should chose independence based on it is another question,” he said. Speaking after giving press groups from the UK an overview of the problems that Dundalk has faced because of the border, Mr Malone reminded that Dundalk had been an industrial powerhouse until the introduction of partition in 1922 and fell into decline since.

“A border causes huge distortions of trade and customs problems. From import duty to people shopping in one jurisdiction or the other depending on currency rates,” said Mr Malone. He described how retailers had to face be major shifts in consumer habits that are driven by the shifting prices on different items on either side of the border. He also noted how the border can discourage investors

from considering the area as they can foresee the potential changes in VAT rates or duties from one government or another making the area a less stable investment. “All of these issues enter their thinking and this is a problem for us,” he said. When asked about the potential for the North to lower their corporation rate to compete with Ireland Mr Malone said, “Would I be worried? Yes, the answer is undoubt-

edly, yes. If we have the same tax rate and they have lower wage and production costs then our competitive advantage is gone.” Educational differences too can be a source of problems as each year hundreds of students on both sides of the border seek to attend a college in the other country “The Irish state does not allocate the points to A Levels that they deserve,” said Mr Malone.

“The economic development of the region need to be planned on a north-south basis,” he said. The solution to the economic challenges presented on this side of the water has seen the further integration of planning groups and a unified approach to selling the area. However this has not been met with the backing on a national level which is holding back potential advances.

Good Morning Louth welcomes Canadians THE co-ordinator of the Good Morning Louth phone service, Anne Murphy extended a warm welcome to Professor Maureen Mickus on her recent visit to the callcentre in Dundalk. Professor Mickus was accompanied by a group of Occupational Therapy students from Michigan University. She had previously visited Good Morning Louth in May 2014 and was so impressed with the service that she organised a follow up visit with her students. She proposes establish-

ing a similar service in their own community in Michigan. “The service is wellorganised and responsive to the needs of a growing number of people within the county who greatly benefit from the ongoing support. It is obvious that the benefits of this service are inclusive, providing meaningful activities for the volunteers while also giving important support to older persons in the community. Research over the past several decades has demonstrated the adverse and life threaten-

ing impact of loneliness in later life”, she stated. “With trends toward increased life expectancy and smaller families, there is a critical need for services that support older people within their own community providing them with the ongoing reassurance that others care about their wellbeing”, added Maureen. DkIT sports centre to open by end of year By Niamh Kirk

New and returning students to Dundalk Institute of Technology can look forward to the opening of the DkIT Sports later this year. The new facility will open later in the academic year once all the building services are reinstated. A spokesperson for DkIT has said that the progress has been very good and that it has been re-connected to gas, water and electrical utilities and many building services have been re-commissioned. The finishing touches include ensuring that all building services and life and safety systems are compliant with legislation. But DkIT are also carrying out building refurbishment, maintenance and re-decoration works. The second strand to the DkIT Sport Centre is finding a Fitness Management Handler who will operate the facility on a day to day basis and

provide services to the students and services to the public. DkIT have thrown the net wide to find the best management and have a European tender process for an operator is in place. Tenders have been received and it is hoped that DkIT management will identify a preferred bidder and have them appointed very soon. A tender document for gym equipment is also soon to be evaluated. It is expected that the facility will employ about 35 people. DkIT Sport will contain a 20 metre swimming pool, steam rooms,

jacuzzi, indoor pitches, a gym and an ice-rink. A complementary bus is also expected to run between the DkIT main campus and DkIT Sport. The acquisition will make the colleges one of the best equipped third level institutions in this regard in Ireland. A spokesperson for DkIT said that “We strive to have the facility open as early as possible in the academic year, however if the facility is unavailable for a significant time a partial refund of the levy will be made to students. “We look forward to celebrating the opening

of DkIT Sport in the academic year 2014/15. With the final rounds of the CAO offers in progress DkIT reminded that they still a few places on level 7 and level 8 courses left. As well as new progressive courses such as digital humanities they also have room on communications, creative media, marketing and accounting courses. The Available Place facility operates on a weekly schedule of applications, offers and acceptances. Applications that arrive in CAO before 11am on a Monday will be processed and considered for offers on the following Thursday. An offer posted on a Thursday will be available to view on the CAO website (www.CAO.ie) the following day. It is important to remember that an application for an Available Place on a course does not guarantee an offer. Applicants must satisfy minimum entry requirements as specified by DkIT.

Bryan and Eve going for gold By Paul Byrne

Things are hotting up for brother and sister team Bryan and Eve McCrystal as they prepare for this weekend’s Para Cycling Road World Championships in Greenville, South Carolina, USA. With temperatures regularly reaching 35 degrees Bryan and his teammate James Brown along with Eve and her partner Katie George Dunleavy have been busy adapting to the change in temperature as they spend this week training in South Carolina. Speaking from his base in Greenville, Bryan outlined a typical day for the quartet as they prepare for Friday’s 25km time trial and Sunday’s 120km road race. “Greenville is ridiculously hot with 90% humidity and 35 + degrees everyday”, noted Bryan. “Coming from a cooler climate it has taken time to adapt and thank God there are no shortage

Eve and Bryan McCrystal pictued with members of the irish team

of pharmacies over here because my factor 50 is running low. It’s not a place where we sit out and take in some vitamin D and put our feet up before the race, our day is very much packed with plenty of training. A typical day would be a cycle in the morning with a halfhour gym session in the afternoon. With team meetings in the evenings. Our

day is non-stop like any professional athlete”, explained the Dundalk man. “With just a few days to go, training volume will go down and intensity will remain. The reason for this is to keep us sharp and not tell the body to shut down. We race a very technical 25km time trial course on August 29 and our road race is 120km of the same course

on the 31st”, he added. Both sets of riders will represent Ireland in the Tandem class for athletes who are blind or visually impaired: They compete using a tandem, with the vision impaired person sitting on the rear of the tandem – (known as the stoker) and the sighted person on the front (the pilot) who pedals, steers, brakes and

provides verbal instructions to the stoker. Bryan who is the pilot got a real taste for this event in March when he and James finished fourth, agonisingly just missing out on a medal. The duo are determined not to leave the championships empty handed this time. “These championships are for athletes with a body impairment with the excep-

tion that an able bodied person ‘pilots’ a tandem bike for the visually impaired. Where this para journey has taken myself and Eve in such a short space of time is nothing short of amazing. The Mexico track championships was an eye-opener in March where I didn’t know what to expect. “You would think by having a disability that the standard of racing is low but I can assure you it is of the highest. Not all but most could get by just fine in an able bodied competition. The standard and level needed to compete here is at the top tier. Hopefully we prove equal to the task”, explained Bryan. Bryan, James, Eve and Katie begin their medal quest on August 29 when they take part in the 27km time trial before gearing up for the gruelling 120km race on August 31. president of 35 are almost certain for 2015. The establishment of a patient court is also planned and currently there is a camping to repeal the eight hamendment to the constitution. Applications for the special voters list, for electors with physical illnesses or disabili-

ties that are living in a nursing home or hospital, are also open. Application forms may be obtained at all Louth County Council Offices in Dundalk, Drogheda and Ardee or online at www. louthcoco.ie. Closing date for submission is November 25.

De La Salle school reunion IN June 1989 the news headlines were dominated by the Tiananmen Square massacre and Charlie Haughey’s Fianna Fail party failing to win a majority in the General Election. All I want is You by U2 was top of the charts and Ross McEntegart and over a hundred of his fellow 6th year De La Salle students were sitting their leaving cert exams. Now Ross is aiming to get in contact with as many of that class of 89 as possible as he sets the wheels in motion for a De La Salle Class of 89 school reunion. Blackrock man Ross has set up a special email address for any-

body who sat their leaving cert in the De La Salle in 1989 to contact him and let them know if they would like to attend a memorable reunion. “It’s 25 years since the class of 89 sat our leaving cert and I thought it would be nice for us to organise a reunion and reminisce about our time in the school.”, explained Ross. “I had actually thought about doing one for our 20 year anniversary but between one thing or another it didn’t happen. So far I’ve got about 40 or 50 names saying they’d be interested but there’s a lot more who I have no

contact details for so hopefully they’ll see this article and get in touch with me,” he added. “I’d guess that there were about 130 or so in my year so it would be great to get as many of them to come as possible. I like many others have fond memories of my time in the De La Salle and it would be nice for us all to meet up with some old faces who we have lost contact with over the years” , noted Ross. Anybody from the class of 89 who is interested in attending the De La Salle reunion should send an email to dls89reunion@gmail. com.

The unexpected visitor in Bay Estate

By Paul Byrne The Bay Estate “commoonity were on high alert last Thursday morning as an unwelcome visitor was making life “unbeara-bull” for the local residents. The big brown bullock was first spotted by Enda Duffy who was out for his morning walk with his dog when he noticed the huge beast ambling around the streets of Bay Estate. According to Enda the Bull had made it his business to visit many houses in the

estate whilst leaving his own special calling card in his wake. “I was out walking my dog last Wednesday morning and got a bit of a shock when I saw this massive bull just wandering down the street. “Apparently he had been wandering around Bay Estate from the early hours of the morning going into people’s gardens and leaving his droppings all around the estate” ,laughed Enda. “I actually noticed him in

a field behind the Red Barns Road last week and I’m guessing that’s where he came from. When I saw him last week he was probably in the middle of plotting his big escape. When I spotted him I decided to run back to the house to get my camera and without getting too close to him I managed to get a snap. ,he added. Thankfully the wandering bullock was brought under

control and returned to it’s natural habitat without anybody getting injured.

Matt impresses in Cage Fighting debut Team Torres continue to make a name for themselves in the world of MMA when they had two fighters acquit themselves admirably at the prestigious Cage Warrior event held in The Helix in Dublin at the weekend which was broadcast worldwide. Cage Warriors is regarded as the biggest MMA organisation in Europe and is seen as the springboard from which to launch a career in the UFC. First up, making his debut Cage Warriors appearance, was thrilling local fighter Matthew Mullen in the amateur card. Matthew was up against SBG’s hot new prospect James Gallagher. Despite losing nar-

rowly on a split decision - a result which was met with incredulity from many of those at ringside - there were many positives to be taken from his performance. Matt is the first opponent to take Gallagher the full distance, in all of Gallagher’s previous fights he has finished his opponents in the first round. Matt’s performance was all the more remarkable considering he has not been competing since last year due to competitors pulling out of fights at the last minute, and has been balancing the demands of working full time as a Hedge Fund Accountant whilst training as an amateur, whereas Gal-

lagher has spent the last four years training full time. Matt’s team mate, Tommy ‘The Ghost’ McCafferty, fought in the professional card, and despite a year long

lay-off, extended his winning streak to 6-0 by winning by TKO early in round two of his explosive bout when he caught his opponent with a crushing right hand and finished him

off with some ferocious ground and pound with the referee stepping in to stop the fight. All of Tommy’s six professional fights to date have all finished by Above: Matt Mullen acknowledges the crowd Submission or TKO. Above left: Matt (yellow shorts) in action

String Orchestra ready to perform at the National Concert Hall

Continued from Page 1

Music Generation’s string orchestra are heading for the National Concert Hall

Music Generation Louth is gearing up for the start of its new term with its string orchestra rehearsals for children and young people getting underway on Saturday August 30. Rehearsals are starting earlier than usual this year to prepare for a performance on the main stage of the National Concert Hall, Dublin on October 13 as part of Music Generation’s National Music Education Conference 2014. Under the leadership of Jayne Graham, the programme provides members high quality training as orchestra string players and is a fantastic way for young players

to develop their musical skills. The programme has expanded to cater for three levels of young string players. Groups rehearse weekly during term time at the Music Department of the Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT). Music Generation Louth would be delighted to hear from children and young people who would like to join the string orchestra programme. No audition is necessary. Membership is open to anyone that has been attending lessons on violin, viola, cello or double bass for a year or more. Annual membership is €60 (€30 per term payable in advance).

For further information and/or to register contact: Gemma Murray on 9364635 or email musicgeneration@lmetb.ie Music Generation Louth is a music education service for children and young people that provides a range of opportunities throughout the county for children and young people to learn music. the conflict in the region is ongoing. A statement from Dundalk FC outlined the rules UEFA claim were broken. The first breach is under the Disciplinary Rules, Article 16, which prohibits flags that have specifically been deemed inappropriate by UEFA being flown in football grounds. The second relates to rules on management of football grounds; Article 45 of UEFA Stadium Infrastructure prohibits fans standing in the stadium. The spokesperson for UEFA said that they ‘do not normally comment on disciplinary matters’ and ‘could not make any further statement be-

yond that of the charge and fine.’ Dundalk FC has said that further information has been requested from UEFA which will be examined before the commencement of any appeal process. Dundalk FC has also stated that they too will be making no more comments on the matter until it is fully resolved. While UEFA issued the €18k fine under two offences, the value attributed to each breach has not yet been outlined, with more details on this yet to come. However, the response of supporters to news of the fine as focused largely on the first charge which is related to the flying of Palestinian flags in Oriel Park during the

match. Over the weekend social media users who had been following the story largely expressed surprise and dissatisfaction with the fine. Many were quick to point to many parallel situations where national flags have been flown at European club level matches. The most obvious example of which is the Irish Tricolour being flown during Celtic matches, many of which are in the hands of the local supporters who regularly travel to Celtic Park. UEFA have issued fines to clubs for fans waving flags that have political or potentially offensive images or slogans on them. Celtic were fined €50k last year for a tricolour with Bobby

Sands on it being flown at a match against AC Milan. Earlier this year Russian-side Zenit from St Petersberg were fined €15k for fans burning a German Flag. However, it is difficult to find examples of national flags being flown in isolation, without some sort of potentially offensive slogan or action that has incurred a UEFA fine. The fine is an unfortunate distraction from the ongoing success of the team. “The club had great success so far and this is should take away from the League of Ireland success. We need to keep our eyes firmly on ball”, stated long term supporter, Harry Taaffe who works with the first team.

Over-crowding crisis leads to protests at Lourdes By Niamh Kirk

The situation in the Emergency Department of Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital reached crisis point again last week when nurses and midwives staged a protest against over-crowding and a lack of action by hospital management. On Thursday August 21 the off-duty nurses and midwives stood outside the hospital gates with banners to highlight the dangerous levels of overcrowding in the hospital’s Emergency

Department. A recent Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) report shows that there has been a 99% increase of people waiting on trolleys from July last year. In July 2013, 317 people were left waiting on trolleys in the ED, this year it rose to 632 in July 2014. Earlier this month the INMO wanted the Emergency Department to be taken off call as there were 55 people on trolleys in the hospital resulting in what was described as inhumane

and degrading conditions. Last week, industrial relations officer Tony Fitzpatrick told RTE that there can be as many as 50 patients on a trolley at any one time and that one nurse can be attending up to 15 patients. A lack of resources and poor management are pointed to as the root causes of the problem. They also accused the hospital management of over-relying on agency staff and overtime, which was over-working the staff. The closure of more than

90 beds from Louth County Hospital and opening only 40 as part of the ‘reconfiguration’ of the HSE north east was underlined as a major problem. These changes left a 57 bed deficit. Mr Fitzpatrick said that there are 68 patients waiting to be discharged but due to a lack of step-down facilities, they are stuck in the hospital taking up beds. The opening of the 18 bed clinical decision unit did not, INMO say, make a dent in the numbers. The INMO say that action is needed now in order

to prevent further catastrophe later in the year. Mr Fitzpatrick said that nurses know that if overcrowding is this bad in July it will be considerably worse come November and December. The INMO and HSE clashed over the level of the staff deficit in the hospital with INMO saying there are 92 full time equivalent position not filled causing serious skills and staff shortages. The HSE say the figure is closer to 67.6, however which ever figure is correct, neither helps reduce the

level of patients waiting on trolleys. Local TDs and councillors came out in support of the nurses with Sinn Fein TD Gerry Adams calling for an overhaul of the government health policy. “Some €4 billion has been slashed from the health budget since 2008. “This is unsustainable and I am calling on Minister Varadkar to change the Government’s health policy and to urgently address the levels of overcrowding in Irish hospitals,” he said.

Five percent of calls made to the Crime Victims’ Helpline in 2013 were made from Co Louth. People from Louth contacted the support line more than 140 times last year. Among the most prevalent issues that people are contacting the helpline are about robberies which made up 23% of calls, assaults (22%), childhood sexual abuse (18%) and harassment and intimidation (14%) and rape or sexual assault (7%). The crime vicitims’ helpline make more than 2,400 follow-up calls last year too. The helpline acts as gateway for victims to the supports and services available at a local level for victims of crime. Helpline volunteers provide information about face-to-face victim support services; specialist services for rape, domestic violence, child abuse, and homicide; and access to counselling. Among the most common referrals made by the helpline was to local support agencies such as the free legal advice bureau but also largely to specialist support groups.

Letters to the editor

Thank-you Dundalk Dear Editor, The number of humanitarian situations across the world right now can be overwhelming. From the morning newspaper until the late night news, we are faced with the suffering of so many in Gaza, Iraq, Syria, South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and beyond. There can be a temptation to give in to a feeling of helplessness and look away. However, we can help and we do help. I am writing to thank the people of Dundalk for their continued support which is making a positive difference. Because of the generous donations of the people of Dundalk, the Oxfam Shop on Clanbrassil Street has been raising vital funds for our emergency responses for more than two decades, as well as for long-term development projects and campaigning that changes the practices that create poverty in the first place. Over the past year this work has helped 4,700 people in Rwanda to lift themselves out of poverty with a sustainable livelihood along with 3,000 female farmers in Tanzania, provided information to almost 59,000 young people in South Africa on how to prevent HIV and given vital emergency support including safe water to 1.2 million in Syria and neighbouring countries, €850,000 after the Philippines typhoon, and so far €200,000 in South Sudan and €250,000 in Gaza. None of this would have been possible without the help of the people of Dundalk. You may think you are doing something small in donating that box of bric-a-brac or bag of unwanted clothes, but you are making a big impact. For example, €8 raised by that shirt you no longer wear could help purify around 2,000 litres of water, making it safe to drink for South Sudanese families living in makeshift camps – people forced to flee their homes because of conflict and now facing a major food crisis. By donating more, we can do more and so I am asking you to consider giving your unwanted clothes, books, accessories and other items to your local Oxfam on Clanbrassil Street in Dundalk today. There is a solution to that feeling of being overwhelmed by what is going on in the world today and it is found in what you already have, or have too much of. As autumn approaches and we begin to swap one wardrobe for another, please donate to Oxfam Dundalk. If you have any questions, you can contact Shop Manager Marie on 042 933 8444. More information can also be found on our website at www.oxfamireland.org/shops Thank you once again for your extraordinary support. Jim Clarken Chief Executive, Oxfam Ireland.

Old Dundalk Society tour of Aiken Barracks The Old Dundalk Society would like to thank Lt. Colonel Hearns, Officer Commander, 27th Battalion, Aiken Barracks, for allowing their members to participate in a walking tour of the Barracks. It was a most enjoyable experience for all concerned on the two occasions which was mainly due to the professionalism of Sergeant Riccardo Lucchesi who led the tour. He gave a detailed, informed and enlightened talk on the history of the barracks and its buildings. He made the society aware of the overseas peacekeep-

ing role of the Irish Army where local men, including Sergeant Lucchesi, have participated on our behalf. The Society would like to thank Lt. Colonel Hearns, Sergeant Lucchesi, The Mess Bar Staff, soldiers on duty who checked in members and those who guided members to the car park. It was a unique experience and was greatly appreciated by members and friends alike. If you would like to join The Old Dundalk Society as it celebrates its 50th anniversary please phone 0851833110. Everybody welcome.

Call on students to take part in readathon The 27th MS Readathon is approaching and schools in Louth are encouraged to sign up for a month of reading to directly support people with multiple sclerosis locally. An estimated 8,000 people have MS in Ireland, with thousands more family members affected. Multiple Sclerosis is a chronic, often disabling disease and is the most common disabling neurological condition affecting young adults in Ireland. MS Readathon school ambassadors, local people living with MS,

will visit schools as part of the campaign to help students understand more about the condition. MS Readathon is the key annual fundraising campaign of Multiple Sclerosis Ireland, the services, information and research organisation supporting people affected by MS. MS Ireland is saying a big ‘thankyou’ to 11 schools in County Louth who participated last year. The students joined more than 14,500 young readers across Ireland in the

MS Readathon to raise funds for vital local services. Schools around the country will be contacted by MS Ireland from the beginning of September, with information brochures and entry forms to sign up for MS Readathon 2014. The 27th MS Readathon reading month will take place for one month from October 10 to November 10. Funds raised by these young readers directly benefit people with multiple sclerosis locally, enabling

one-to-one support for those newly diagnosed or struggling with their MS; physiotherapy and exercise classes to help stay independent; and respite to help the person recharge and to give their family a break from providing around the clock care. The other great part of MS Readathon is that it’s an opportunity for children to immerse themselves in reading, finding great authors and stories and improving their literacy skills at the same time.

Intercede for my family that we may always be provided for in all our necessities. I ask thee St. Martha to overcome the dragon which thou didst cast at thy feet. One Our Father and three Hail Marys, and a lighted candle every Tuesday and the above prayer made known with the intentions of spreading devotion to St. Martha. This miraculous Saint grants everything before the Tuesdays are ended. No matter how difficult. E.F.

NOVENA TO THE SACRED HEART

Ploughing the old fashioned way at the Peninsula Ploughing and Field Day in Cooley on Sunday

Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I asked you for many favours. This time I ask you for this special favour (mention it). Take it, dear Heart of Jesus and place it within your own broken heart where your Father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes it will become your favour, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for 3 days. Promise publication and favours will be granted. (never known to fail). L.M.

Memories of the past and dreams of the future

Service users from RehabCare Resource Centre Carroll Village have put together an evening of poetry and music to be held in the Crowne Plaza hotel at 8pm on Thursday August 28. Over 25 writers from the centre have been reminiscing about events in their lives from birth to the present day. The stories and poems are funny, touching and mysterious – sometimes all at the same time – and give a sense of the journey the authors have taken from birth into adulthood, together with their families and friends, with all life’s ups and downs along the way. But it’s not all about looking backwards as the clue is in the title – twenty twenty – a vision of life up to twenty years ago and an imaginative look at where they would like their lives to be up to twenty years from now. The poems will be read by some of the finest voices on the stage in Dundalk today – Tim Ahern, Gabrielle Tuomey, Karyn McCooey, Karen Shields and Paudie Breen. To let the words and imaginations fly – music will be provided by popular local band ‘The Seasons’ and cellist Lynsey O’Neil. This is the second poetry night staged by the writers from RehabCare – last year saw the Launch of their first book – ‘A way With words’ with music on the night by the Cross Border Orchestra. The evening was memorable and moving for all concerned and we hope that these evenings of poetry and music will be an annual event as the writing group goes from strength to strength. Entry is free and all are welcome to enjoy this unique evening. For further details please contact RehabCare resource centre on 0429328766.

Busy spell for cycling continues Wexford was the destination for many of Ireland’s road cyclist when Wexford Wheelers promoted the Wexford 2 Day, a three-stage event held over the Saturday and Sunday. Three different events were run, the main event for the A1 & A2 category, an A3 and Junior category and an A4 event. Cuchulainn had riders competing in all three

events, with Liam Dolan and Sean Loughran lining up in the main race. Both Dundalk men finished in the main field in Saturday’s 115km road stage and performed well in the afternoon’s 4km mountain time trial, a gruelling event despite the short distance. On Sunday, the sunshine of the day was replaced with rain

as the riders tackled the final 105km stage. At the 20km mark Dolan made it into a large breakaway of ten riders, which were not to be seen by the main bunch for the rest of the day. In the sprint for the finish Dolan finished a disappointing ninth, but the time gained was enough to see him move up into sixth position overall. In the A3 & Junior event, Dundalk’s junior rider Nathan McGrane finished up in 24th overall and sixth placed junior. In the A4 event Fran Egan of Cuchulainn, in his first ever stage race, rode strongly all weekend to finish up in 30th position. The week ahead is a big one for Cuchulainn Cycling Club when on Thursday the club promotes the Leinster and Louth Hill Climb

Championship. The event, run up Jenkinstown Hill, is a gruelling event and Dublin’s James Davenport is bound to return to defend his Leinster title. For the Louth title the favourites will be defending champion Ray O`Shuaghnessey, Alan Bingham and Tomas McCabe. On the women’s front Annette Dolan will be looking to reclaim her title. On Sunday the club is hosting the Skoda Challenge Sportive, a 120km cycle event which takes in the best scenery in the county. Over 500 riders are expected to compete in the event, which is part of a series of cycle challenges which have been held in Kerry, Waterford, Donegal and Wicklow throughout the year.

The cost of running a family car in Ireland has dropped slightly by 0.71% in the last 12 months, according to our AA annual cost of motoring index. It now costs €10,571.20 to run a family car in the ‘Band B’ tax category*, a decrease of €75.12 on the previous year. This means the average Irish motorist is €6.26 better off each month compared to last year. The decrease comes despite a sharp rise in car insurance premiums which are up by 8.5% on average for the year up to July 2014 compared to the same period in 2013. Offsetting this hike were variables such as the price of new cars which are down by 3% on the previous 12 months. This decrease is reflected in the depreciation figure we used in our Cost of Motoring Study. Car insurance is the big story this year. There’s a hefty hike across the board but it is not distributed

evenly so you really have to shop around. Some insurers had welldocumented problems last year and we know that there were more accidents; the sad road safety data tells us that. Deflation has also contributed to the slight reduction in the cost of running a car. According to the CPI, transport related goods have seen a 2% price drop year on year which we reflect in the price of tyres, servicing, repairs and parking. The annual cost of motoring is calculated each year using a holistic figure that includes the obvious things like fuel, insurance, servicing but also factors in a whole range of other costs. These include costs like depreciation and interest charges, replacement for components like tyres etc over the car’s life. The figure assumes a motorist that buys a new car and retains it for 8 years at an average annual mileage of 16,000

kms. All repairs, replacements and servicing are carried out as per manufacturer’s recommendations. Each year the AA calculates average prices for each of the respective tax bands and illustrates the cost of running an average family car. In previous years a Band C car was taken as an average family car however this has been amended to Band B this year to reflect the shift in new car sales over the last couple of years. In terms of new cars almost three times as many Band B vehicles were purchased in 2012 than Band C cars. The cost of running a Band C car in 2013 was €11,935. This has dropped to €11,849.60 this year. Band G cars were also removed from the study as there are so few of them. Improvements in car technology have made these veryhigh emission cars very rare; just 13 were bought in the whole country in 2013. The full details of the AA’s Cost of Motoring analysis for 2014 are available at www.theaa.ie.

Lorraine appointed Renault Ireland Brand Ambassador A lover of all things French, including food, fashion and holidays, it was fitting that working mum Lorraine Keane was announced today as a brand ambassador for French marque, Renault. A regular visitor to France where she holidays each year, and a pretty good French speaker to boot, Lorraine showed some va va voom today as she picked up the key card to her brand new stunning Renault Captur. The Captur is the latest stylish motor from Renault, hot on the heels of the new Clio, and this one is sure to turn heads on the school run, business engagements and functions in the city and throughout the country. The new urban stylish crossover which arrived in Ireland in July, brings a welcome splash of colour and glamour to Irish roads. The ideal family car, the Captur has a unique blend of MPV,

SUV and family hatchback. Lorraine’s new Captur is a stunning burnt orange energy efficient TCe 90 S&S Intense model and is not only good looking but also has some clever life-simplifying touches which are great for

busy mums, including zipped removable, wipeable and washable seat covers, dual height boot floor with reversible cover and sliding rear seat bench expanding your boot and storage space. Lorraine and her husband

musician and radio presenter Peter Devlin have lots of plans for the new Renault Captur before the summer runs out. Patrick Magee, Country Operations Manager, Renault Ireland says Lorraine is a great match for the brand:

“It’s great to have Lorraine on board as she is always on the go and the Captur suits her busy lifestyle. It’s a very stylish and chic model and Lorraine herself is known for her style, and we hope she has a safe and enjoyable driving

experience in our latest and already very popular Captur” Lorraine Keane: “I’m loving my new Captur. The colour is amazing and it’s ideal for me and the family, with great storage and cool stuff like Media Nav which can access email, full navigation system, USB to connect to my iPhone and iPod to listen to my music with a great sound system, and Bluetooth for hands free calls. Great boot space and the removable, wipeable covers are fab. Looking forward to lots of trips at home and in France with my new Captur”. Lorraine joins mentalist Keith Barry, broadcaster Ian Dempsey and Paralympic Double Gold Medallist Mark Rohan as Renault Ireland Ambassadors. New Renault Captur is available from Renault dealerships all around Ireland and is available through Renault Finance from just €189 per month. www.renault.ie
