Tributes have been pouring in from many quarters following the sudden passing of local footballer Ciaran Casey. The local sporting scene and wider community have been shocked and saddened by the untimely passing of Ciaran just days after playing for his club, Bellurgan Utd. The 37-year-old father of one, was admitted to hospital on Thursday but died the following day from a rare, aggressive form of leukaemia which hadn't been diagnosed. Ciaran was highly respected both on and off the field of play, and over the weekend, huge crowds attended his wake at Woodbury Gardens, and also the Bellurgan Utd clubrooms to sign books

Ciaran the footballer was very easily overtaken by Ciaran the person. On the field he was a leader, a competitor, an honest wholehearted individual who knew the meaning of ‘Team’. GARDA Commissioner Nóirín O’Sullivan has called on anyone with information on the murder of Garda Adrian Donohoe to have the courage to come forward. – to contact gardai. According to the Commissioner, significant progress has been made in the investigation into the murder. Speaking after a memorial mass in Dundalk for Garda Donohoe on the second anniversary of his death, the commissioner added that the investigation is “complex”. She said the force needed to get things

100 per cent right before those responsible could be brought to justice. The commissioner added that Gardaí had full co-operation from the PSNI and forces in other jurisdictions. The memorial Mass for Garda Donohue was held at St Joseph’s Church in Dundalk on Sunday, January 25. Garda Donohoe, aged 41, was shot dead during an armed robbery at Lordship Credit Union two years ago. His killers remain at large and it is believed some of the suspects have left the jurisdiction. Garda Donohue’s widow, Caroline, his two children, colleagues and the community also

marked his second anniversary with a vigil. Around 600 people, led by Mrs Donohoe attended the vigil in Lordship on Friday, January 23. Caroline and her two

children carried flowers ahead of the mourners in a brief walk from Lordship Credit Union to St Patrick’s GAA club where he trained junior teams.

2014 rose of Tralee Maria Walsh, Louth Rose Ciara Soraghan with Cara Volunteers Anna Brennan, Geraldine Bond and Marie Kindlon

The 2014 Rose of Tralee Maria Walsh visited Louth on Sunday as part of her nationwide tour of the country promoting this years search for a rose. Her host was the 2014 Louth Rose Ciara Soraghan and they packed a lot of action into the few hours that were available. First stop was the host venue of this years Louth Rose Selection, The Crowne Plaza Hotel, where on the 26th of April a new young lady will be crowned the 2015 Louth Rose. The Roses then went into Dundalk to visit the Cara Cancer Care Centre where they got a wonderful reception and mingled with volunteers and patients.

Carlingford was the next destination and an action packed hour in Carlingford adventure centre. Here Maria conquered her fear of heights with a little “persuasion” from guide Matt Corker as she jumped off high buildings and flew down the Zip Line. The final leg of the short tour was to St John of Gods, Drumcar, to help them launch their big fundraising White Collar Boxing night. Maria and Ciara were greeted to a fantastic welcome by both staff and very excited residents. Those interested in taking part in the Louth contest should see www.roseoftralee.ie for application form.

Louth is on top of household charge non-compliance list By Paul Byrne

A report in the Sunday Business Post has revealed Louth is the county with the worst record of paying the household charge. Data obtained under the Freedom of Information Act show revenue has imposed more mandatory deductions per person in Co Louth than in any other. A total of 45,000 people have had their wages or pensions deducted by Revenue to recover unpaid household charges with 1800 of these coming from Louth. Leitrim Meath and Cavan followed Louth as the worst offenders on the list. The €100 flat rate charge, which was in place for 2012, was later re-

placed by the local property tax. But households which never paid the charge now face paying €213, with penalties and interest added. The household charge was originally collected by local authorities but responsibility for collecting the tax was handed over to revenue in 2013. The deadline for those who have not yet paid their 2015 Local Property Tax expired just over two weeks ago with revenue urgng those yet to pay to do so before the collection process comes to an end in the coming weeks. Last September Louth County Council councillors voted to reduce the local property tax by 1.5 per cent, which was estimated to take approximately €150000 from the council’s annual budget.

Teachers continue battle over Junior Cert changes By Paul Byrne

Secondary school teachers in Dundalk were amongst an estimated 27,000 around the country to hold a second one day strike last Thursday as they continue their fight for what they perceive to be the Government’s failure to heed their concerns about the new junior cycle plans. Teachers around the town held placards and voiced their opposition to the new Junior Cycle Student Award programme which they feel will undermine standards, equity and fairness. The old Junior Cert exams system which was abolished in September is to be replaced

Teachers from Colaiste Rís outside the school

by a system where teachers are responsible for assessment of their own pupils for a new certificate called the Junior Cycle Students Award (JCSA), to be issued by schools. Teachers have voiced concerns regarding these new changes say-

ing they would damage the teacher pupil relationship and would open up questions of bias when marking some students. This is the second one day strike held by teachers and thus far there has been very little progress according

to the teachers unions. Minister Jan O’Sullivan who has taken over the education brief had proposed to reduce the school based assessment part of the new plan to 40 per cent of final marks from the 100 per cent planned by her predecessor Ruairí

Quinn. However, this was not deemed satisfactory by the teacher’s unions ASTI and TUI which led to a second one day strike. Following yesterday’s strike action Minister O’Sullivan had been critical of the teacher’s actions saying “There is no reason to close schools today. The strike will only result in students missing a day’s teaching, disruption to parents and the loss of a day’s pay for teachers.” However she has indicated that further talks have been earmarked after the chairman of the previous talks Dr Pauric Travers contacted both sides on Wednesday evening to organise discussions next week.

Panicked because he had no insurance A man who was involved in a road traffic accident in the early hours of the morning, told Dundalk Distirct Court that he left the scene as he panicked because he had no insurance. Peter Daly of 43 Ballynamona Road, Killeavy, was located by Gardai a week later and he admitted his involvement. As a result, he appeared

at the local court to face three hit and run charges along with a no insurance charge. Insp Martin Beggy stated that Gardai were called to an incident at Dundalk St, Carlingford, where an Opel Corsa was rear-ended by an Audi which then took off. A week later Gardai spoke to the defendant who admitted driving. Full compensation of

€900 has since been paid to the victim. Solicitor, Paul Tiernan, stated that his client accepted full responsibility for the incident. He had no insurance on the day and panicked, so he left the scene. He pointed out that the 23-year-old had recently bought into a courier business and losing his licence would

not only threaten his own employment, but that of his employee. Judge Flann Brennan imposed a €200 fine in respect of each charge of failing to report, failing to stop and failing to remain at the scene. In respect of the no insurance charge, he found the facts proven and dismissed the case.

Sixth class students, Gabriel Cleary and Brogan Kelly

The students of Scoil Naisiunta Bhride, Faughart – the Co. Louth school at the heart of the birthplace of St Brigid - are busy crafting hundreds of the beautiful reed crosses this week, along with parents, teachers and community members, for the school’s annual fundraiser. During the week-long initiative, all students are encouraged to take part and learn how to make the distinctive crosses before St. Brigid’s Feast Day, February 1. St Brigid is attributed with creating the very first reed-woven cross that bears her name, on the deathbed of a pagan chieftain, who converted to Christianity before his death.

The cross making is now a firmly established school tradition, as the crosses are in demand by locals and hundreds of visitors to St Brigid’s Shrine in Faughart each year. In addition to the popular four armed crosses, variations include the triskele (three armed cross) and an interlaced 36-reed cross. Each year there’s a community effort with fresh rushes being sourced from the surrounding countryside, delivered by the trailer load by volunteers. The crosses will go on sale on Saturday January 31 and Sunday February 1 at St Brigid’s Shrine, with all proceeds going to the local school.

Mná na Geataí host Valentine’s Day Ball On Saturday February 14 Mná na Geataí fundraising committee will host a Valentine’s day ball in Aid of the Gary Kelly Centre in The Grove House, Dunleer. The night will begin with a champagne reception followed by a four course meal, auction and raffle. There will also be a band and a DJ with dancing until late. Tickets are priced at €50 euro each and are available from Pat’s Gift shop in

Dunleer or from any of the committee members. It is shaping up to be a night to remember with some fantastic prizes up for grabs and some great entertainment. This is the second event that will be hosted by Mná na Geataí. In October they hosted a coffee morning in the Market House in Dunleer which was very successful and saw a community coming together to support a

worthy cause. A total of €2,400 euro was raised for the Gary Kelly centre. Mná Na Geataí came about after a group of women met at the school gates while their children were at school. The group originally were a social group but when a member fell ill the women decided that the group should support her and other members of the community that have had cancer. This is when they linked up with the Gary Kelly Centre.

House prices expected to continue increasing By Tamara O’Connell

HOUSE prices across Louth rose by 15 per cent in 2014 and are expected to jump again this year according to a new survey. The property market in the county has now moved from recovery to growth mode with a rise of nine per cent forecast for 2015. The rise in property prices is being attributed to a shortage of

family homes which is starting to kick in. “A shortage of the right homes in the right areas is behind the growth in the property market,” said Sherry Fitzgerald Carroll auctioneer Brian Carroll. “The rise in prices is allowing some homeowners to get out of the negative equity trap. Those people couldn’t sell two or three years ago but now they are able to move on.

“It’s a massive lifestyle benefit to people who are now able to change properties instead of being stuck in negative equity.” The Dundalk auctioneer said that after the 2008 crash, property prices in the town continued to fall until late 2013. “There was a noticeable increase in prices from January 2014 due to an increase in confidence amongst buyers and a shortage of property,” he said.

National Success for Dundalk Regional Skills & Training Centre Dundalk Regional Skills and Training Centre is celebrating the success of Gordon Hickey who came first in a National Skills Competition recently in Sligo. This competition welcomed entrants from all over Ireland and was held in Sligo Institute of Technology. Ray Murphy of Dundalk RST welcomed the announcement and added that “Gordon completed Phase 2 of his apprenticeship in Toolmaking with us here in Dundalk under the tuition of Tookmaking Instructor Paul Twibill and is employed by Autolaunch in Bagnelstown”. The Tool Making Apprenticeship is just one of the apprenticeships

Pipefitting and Metal Fabrication. Students from all over Ireland come to Dundalk to undertake Phase 2 of their apprenticeship which is gener-

ally a four year process. Dundalk RST (formally Solas) is one of the leading Training Centres in Ireland and the places on their courses are always very much sought after. Dundalk Regional Skills and Training Centre recently joined LMETB (formerly Louth VEC and Meath VEC) to create a new education and training entity. Peter Kierans, Chief Executive Officer of Louth Meath Education and Training Board also congratulated Gordon, his instructor Paul Tribill and colleagues in Dundalk. Gordon can now look forward to the World Finals which takes place in Brazil in August.

he won the respect of much vaunted opponents for his competitive style and fully committed play. It was fitting that Bellurgan’s finest achievement of winning the Nivea Cup in 2007 was in a team skippered by Ciaran. High amongst Ciarans finest attributes was his beaming friendly smile allied with an appreciation for anything that was done for him and his fellow footballers. As an initial outsider to the Bellurgan area he quickly established a

rapport with all club members through his friendly disposition and willingness to get involved in all aspects of the club. Bellurgan United were privileged to have had the presence of Ciaran Casey in the club and his absence leaves a massive void. Over 2,000 on Dundalk housing list By Tamara O’Connell

THERE are over 2,000 people on the housing waiting list in the Municipal District of Dundalk, according to the latest report released by Louth County Council (LCC). The LCC Housing & Communities Progress Report showed that there were 2,101 people on the housing waiting list up to November 30, 2014. The report which was dated January 5 also revealed that 15 people presented as homeless to

the housing authority last December. Ten people were offered advice and support including fast tracking for rent supplement eligibility. Three were placed in emergency temporary accommodation; one person refused an offer of temporary emergency accommodation and one was not eligible. Meanwhile, a report on antisocial behaviour (ASB) revealed that out of 116 ASB complaints received by LCC, only five of the complaints were dismissed.

SALE EXTENDED UNTIL SUNDAY!

The majority of the complaints have been fully investigated; however there are five investigations still ongoing. In 58 of the cases, no further action was required as there was no ASB found. In 42 cases, the advice given was that the ASB was trivial and no further action was required. A verbal warning was issued in five cases; 12 cases saw the first written warning issued; two had a second warning issued and one had a final written warning issued.

WOOD FLOORING An appeal has been issued to find Tyson and Bam Bam

By Tamara O’Connell

A HORSE charity in Omeath has appealed for help in finding two of its Shetland ponies both of whom have been specially trained to work with children with special needs. Holly’s Horse Haven issued an appeal to find Tyson and Bam Bam who went missing after they were borrowed by what they thought was a charity organisation’s foster home. The co-founder of Holly’s Horse Haven, Elaine Duffy, is appealing for the safe return of the ponies.

“We’ve had about eight sightings all over the country but most of them are negative We have a few positive leads that we will check out today”, said Elaine. “Most of the sightings are a case of mistaken identity. We have found a few Shetland ponies that need our help and we are organising bringing one up to the Haven from Cork. “Every cloud has a silver lining so hopefully those horses will get a better life but we still really want to find Tyson and Bam Bam.” Elaine added: “It’s really, re-

ally important that we can trace or catch up with where they have gone. We were told they were stolen. I want to stress that if somebody has bought the ponies in all innocence off whoever it is that took them, then we won’t take them off them. “We would ensure that they’re safe and they’re okay but we wouldn’t want to cause stress to any children or anything if the families have bought them in good faith. “The two of them are very friendly, and know their names. Both come to their names.”

Dundalk man given chance to avoid jail on drugs charges A 50-year-old man who pleaded guilty to drugs charges at Dundalk District Court was given the opportunity to avoid a jail term when his case was remanded for a Community Service Report. Judge Flann Bren-

nan told Trevor Craig of 6 Mary St South, Dundalk, that he would consider 220 hours Community Service in lieu of ten months as he put the case back to April 8. The court heard that on June 6, 2013, the defendant was

found with a variety of drugs with a total value of €849.75 at 107 College Heights. He was charged with possession of drugs and possession for the purpose of sale or supply. Solictor, Dermot Lavery, stated that

his client was involved with drugs and had suffered severe addictions himself but had now left that world behind. Judge Brennan stated that it was an extremely serious matter as he adjourned the case.

Turned to crime to pay for drugs

A man who turned to crime in an effort to pay for drugs and pay off debts is making an effort to get clean from all drugs. Brendan Toal of 17 Doolargy Ave, Dundalk, told Dundalk District Court that he was now clean from all hard drugs and trying to get off weed when he appeared to answer theft charges. The court heard that on April 25 at 5.50am Gardai were contacted in relation to a male on Peter St

and Barrack St, and when they arrived the defendant fled the scene dropping a hammer, two Nintendo consoles and games. He was later apprehended and admitted theft of the items while also telling Gardai that he had broken into two cars in Bay Estate two days earlier. Solicitor, Eleanor Kelly, stated that the 19 year old defendant was unemployed and had started on drugs at the age of 14. He had

been hanging around with the wrong crowd and the offences were the result of his drug difficulties. He had been robbing to pay for drugs and debts, but was now off hard drugs and hoping to come off weed. She stated that Mr Toal apologised for his actions and was trying to turn his life around. Judge Grainne O’Neill adjourned the case to March 11 for a Probation Report.

Cricket club look forward to season

Dundalk Cricket Club held it’s fifth AGM on Saturday January 24 at The Spirit Store. A lively discussion amongst the members present laid down a clear path for the year ahead and the main aim of the club will be to increase it’s presence amongst the schools of the area and to build up the youth section. The final amount of the clubs 2013 grant has now been spent and the club will be acquiring two new batting cages in 2015 which will bring up a total of three practice lanes and put the club on a par with most other clubs in Leinster. Election of the officers proceeded and the following were returned: President: Pat Kavanagh; Chairman: Brendan Waters; Vice Chairman: Ian McEvoy; Secretary: Derek Turner; Treasurer: Michael Hughes; PRO: Eddie Bosano-Andrews. Brian Morris the treasurer since the foundation of the club in 2009 stood down to make way for Michael Hughes and the club recorded its appreciation for the good job that Brian has done during his tenure in office. The 2015 season fixtures have now been published on the club’s website and once again the club would encourage all those interested in the game to attend any of the club’s matches.

LMETB endorse National Youth Survey The National Youth Strategy is being developed by the Department of Children and Youth Affairs (DCYA) and consists of a variety of consultative approaches including an online survey and a facilitator-led event in Croke Park on January 31st. This consultative process will

inform the development and priorities for young people’s services in Ireland up until 2020. The DCYA have asked Louth & Meath Education & Training Board (LMETB) to promote this consultation process across Louth. The most recent census

Assault at end of First Communion A woman out celebrating a First Comunion saw the day come to an end when she assaulted a hotel manager and a Garda who came to investigate. Caroline McDonagh of 54 Grange Drive, Dundalk, who pleaded guilty to public order and assault charges, had the case against her adjourned for a Probation Report. Insp Yvonne Murphy told Dundalk District Court that on May 11 last year, Gardai were called to a public order incident and assault at the Fairways Hotel. The manager had received a kick and the defendant attempted to remove his glasses. Outside the hotel, Ms McDonagh, assaulted a Garda, causing minor bruising to her face. Solicitor, Eleanor Kelly, stated

Dundalk Leader 28th January 2015

that her client is a 37-year-old married woman with five children. She had been at a First Communion when a lot of drink was taken and things got out of hand. Ms Kelly added that the defendant suffers from depression and is on medication, which she accepts she shouldn’t have mixed with alcohol. She is very embarrassed by the incident of which she has very little recollection. The defendant is learning to deal with alcohol issues and says she will not be back before the court again. Judge Grainne O’Neill commented that an assault on anyone was bad enough without that being a Garda, and was told that the defendant would have no problem in apologising. The case was adjourned to March 11th.

Man who turned his life around is changed character

A man who committed a number of offences in his early 20s while addicted to cocaine and alcohol has managed to free himself from those difficulties and turn his life around. Aaron McCann, with an address at 6 Villas 2, Muirhevnamor, Dundalk was described as being a “character completely at odds with where he was”, when he appeared at Dundalk District Court to answer charges arising from incidents between 2005 and 2010. The court heard that on November 21, 2009, Gardai stopped the defendant on suspicion of drink driving when he gave his name as Francis McCann who was subsequently convicted as a result. However, on speaking to Francis McCann, Gardai established that Aaron McCann was the driver and the conviction was set aside. On September 19, 2010, Gardai stopped the defendant who was observed driving from side to side at Grange Drive, Muirhevnamor, and a specimen later revealed he was over the limit for driving. Insp Martin Beggy also outlined that on February 27, 2008, the Department of Social Wel-

fare reported that a cheque for €1,516, belonging to a woman, had been fraudulently lodged into Aaron McCann’s account. When arrested, the defendant admitted finding the cheque and lodging it. All compensation was paid. On April 18, 2009, a woman reported a car stolen from outside her house after the keys had been taken. Gardai observed the car with Mr McCann driving and he was arrested. On another date, Gardai received a report of windows being damaged on the Avenue Road and they attended the scene where they saw two men smashing windows on a new property. One of the men arrested was Aaron McCann and damage was estimated at €5,000. The defendant was observed driving at speed and doing a handbrake turn on September 20, 2010. Gardai, who had seen Mr McCann, driving the car earlier had to pull in off the road. They followed the vehicle which was abandoned and saw the defendant running away. Barrister, Irene Sands, stated that her client’s last conviction was in 2007 and that these offences occurred between 2005 and 2010. He had contacted his

solicitor in an attempt to have all matters finalised. “All these offences were committed when he was in his early 20s and at the time was struggling with cocaine and alcohol addiction. He has been drug free for five years and hasn’t drank since 2012, while he now lives with his partner and three children. “He is now in a different position as he is working full time. He trains children in his local Mullaghbawn GAA club every Friday night and is active in the community. His character now is completely at odds with where he was”, added Ms Sands. The barrister stated that while the defendant was aware of the seriousness of the offences, he would be grateful for the opportunity to carry out Community Service. In respect of the drink driving charges, Judge Flann Brennan imposed a fine of €200 and six year disqualification on each offence. In relation to the criminal damage charge, the judge adjourned the case for a Community Service Report and recommended 200 hours in lieu of eight months. Other charges were taken into consideration.

Achievement Awards. The event was hosted by Age Friendly Ireland, the home of Ireland’s Age Friendly Cities and Counties Programme. Voting in Nigeria

My fellow Nigerians in Louth, we should try to educate our people on their voting rights in the forthcoming February 14, 2015 presidential election. It is glaring, our economy is sinking, no good schools, roads are dilapidated, more epileptic electricity supply, no good medical facilities, no accountability, corruption has increased more than before and no adequate security which is the backbone of development. We need changes that can reduce unemployment, ensure security of people’s lives and properties. We should not allow our personal ambition, political interest, ethnic and religious parochialisms to prevent us from seeing the light. So, theWesternWorld should send lots of international observers to effectively oversee and monitor the entire nation especially the Eastern Zones, Rivers, Delta, Edo, Lagos, etc Matthew Arekame.

Aggressive towards Gardai

A man who became abusive to Gardai after they called to a house in Fatima Park told Dundalk District Court that the incident scarred Christmas for himself and his family. Gary Quinn of 23 Fatima Park apologised for his actions on December 21 last year which resulted in him being fined €200. The court heard that Gardai attended Fatima Park and spoke to the defendant who was shouting and acting in an aggressive manner. As there were children present he agreed to go outside the house. He became aggressive and started shouting at members of the public before being arrested. Solicitor, Sean T O’Reilly, stated that his client had more drink than was good for him and pointed out that the incident scarred his Christmas and his family’s Christmas. He said that he was very drunk and wished to apologise. Judge Flann Brennan imposed a fine of €100 in respect of charges of threatening and abusive behaviour and intoxication in a public place.

Rugby Club eye All-Ireland title It’s a big weekend for Dundalk Rugby Club are hoping to be crowned All-Ireland Champions on Saturday afternoon. The local side will travel to Armagh to take on Bangor in the All-Ireland Junior Cup Final and a big travelling support is expected to cheer them on. Those wishing to attend should note that buses for the final are steadily filling up and anyone interested in travelling should contact 087-2795429 or fixtures@dundalkrfc.ie. Cost is €10 for adults and €6 for all others. Admission to grounds on the day will be £5. In action over the weekend, Dundalk 2nds defeated Clondalkin 3632 in an epic battle in the Leinster league. Clondalkin struck first but Owen McNally replied with a try, followed by efforts from Tiarnan Gonnelly and Robbie Shields, in a

game that remained tight to the end. With five minutes remaining, Dundalk were four points down but a try from Aaron Kernan helped clinch the victory. Dundalk Under 11 Sharks kicked off their 2015 campaign in great style away to Naas RFC on a fine Sunday morning perfect for rugby. Naas RFC have a reputation for producing fine under age sides, so the boys were aware a tough test awaited them and they would need to be at their best. 26 sharks made the long early morning trip to Naas and they were split into 2 evenly matched teams, the Black Sharks and the White Sharks. Dundalk RFC have drawn Wicklow RFC at home in Round 2 of the Provincial Towns Cup with the match to be played at home on Sunday February 22, at 3pm.

Community Alert initiatives are making an impact

The latest meeting of the Cooley Community Alert was held on Thursday January 8 in St Mary’s Hall. A good attendance was noted for the first meeting of the year. A number of people spoke from the floor praising the current work being done, which includes installing new burglar alarms, locks. chains and various other security measures to help give peace of mind to our elderly and vulnerable citizens. A discussion then took place regarding our text alert system, it was felt by many that it was having a very positive effect in helping to apprehend criminals after their deeds, but that it was also having the effect of preventing crimes being committed and a number of incidents were cited to back up these claims. There are many new Community Alert signs erected with both the Garda and text alert numbers on them and the committee would ask people to perhaps save them on their phones in case you ever need them. The next meeting will be on February 19 in St Mary’s Hall, Cooley, and as usual members and non members are most welcome.

The St Louis U-19 team who lost out to Manor House College, Raheny in the FAI Leinster League match in Oriel Park on Friday.

Given chance to avoid conviction A man who became aggressive towards Gardai was given the chance to avoid a conviction if he paid €150 to the North Louth Hospice. Fintan Donnelly of 33 Grange Drive, Muirhevnamor, Dundalk, pleaded guilty to charges of intoxication in a public place and, threatening and abusive behaviour arising from an incident at

Anne St on September 1, 2014. Dundalk District Court heard that on that date Gardai responded to a 999 call and when they arrived at the scene they saw two males involved in an altercation. They were told to leave but Mr Donnelly became aggressive and was shouting abuse. Solicitor, Frank McDonnell, stated that his client apologised

and that on the night he had words with a would-be friend and had too much to drink. He asked that the 20-year-old unemployed man be given the chance to remain conviction-free. Judge Grainne O’Neill told the defendant that if he paid €150 to the North Louth Hospice by February 18 she would apply the Probation Act.

On February 6, the Villagers will be previewing new songs from their forthcoming album. Tickets are €20 and available on www. spiritstore.ie or at the bar. Meanwhile, on Thursday February 5, Jarrod Dickenson will perform as part of his Irish tour. The awardwinning Texan’s show starts at 8.30pm. On Tuesday February 17, Eddi Reader will play at the Spirit Store as part of what will be her seventh annual tour. Eddi will be performing with John Douglas and Boo Hewerdine on guitars, Alan Kelly on piano accordion and Kevin McGuire on double bass.

With a career spanning over three decades, Eddi Reader has effortlessly developed into one of popular music’s most thrilling and affecting performers. Having first hit the limelight in the 1980’s with the group Fairground Attraction (who enjoyed huge chart success with their debut No.1 single Perfect and album First of a Million Kisses), Eddi went on to collaborate on many celebrated projects throughout the years, famously harmonizing with Annie Lennox while touring with the Eurythmics and paying her punk dues with a successful stint in the group Gang of Four. However it has been Eddi’s subsequent solo albums that have cemented her image as a powerful figure in British music.

THE NEW SKODA FABIA

The new Skoda Fabia has been awarded the highest score in its class in the 2014 Euro NCAP crash tests – in all four evaluation categories (passenger protection for adults, child safety, safety assistance systems and pedestrian protection). The maximum score was given for the protection of infants up to 18 months. The safety of children up to three years of age also received a high rating. New safety equipment includes Front Assistant with

integrated City Emergency Brake function as standard from SE specification. This system uses radar to constantly measure the distance to the vehicle in front, and intervenes if the car is too close. It also features a multicollision brake, reducing the risk of a subsequent crash following a collision in the road. Furthermore, it now comes with optional Driver Activity Assistant (fatigue recognition), and safety systems including a speed limiter, Hill Hold

Control and an electronic tyre pressure monitoring system. The safety package in the new Skoda Fabia also includes six airbags – front, side and head – protect passengers in combination with five three-point seat belts. A highstrength body and optimised crumple zones form the basis of increased passive safety. All seven current models in the Skoda model range (from Citigo to Superb) have received the maximum five star Euro NCAP rating at launch.

THE VW Golf GTE The Golf GTE is only available as fivedoor hatch and in one trim level, with LED daytime running lights, DAB and Bluetooth coming as standard. It is powered by a 1.4-litre petrol engine outputting 150PS and 102PS electric motor producing a combined maximum output of 204PS /350Nm of torque. With engines engaged this makes it possible to sprint from rest to 62 mph in 7.6 seconds and then on to a top speed of 138 mph. It is mated to a bespoke six-speed DSG transmission – the electric motor is

housed in the gearbox housing. NEDC figures indicate an effective 166 mpg and CO2 emissions of 39 g/km. The mpg figure combines a full battery with a gallon of petrol, so it is not as good as it sounds, unless you can charge the Golf GTE for free.

There are five driving modes: ‘E-mode’, ‘GTE mode’, ‘Battery Hold’, ‘Battery charge’ and ‘Hybrid Auto’. In pure electric mode it can travel depending on conditions up to 31 miles at speeds of up to 81 mph on one complete charge. It is possible to hold

the battery reserve, so that you may use the pure electric mode at the end of journey, perhaps when entering a town or congestion charge zone. Charging takes around 3.75 hours from a domestic power outlet, or from a domestic wallbox around 2.25 hours.
