Community in shock over couple’s death By Paul Byrne

A local rural community were shocked and saddened as details emerged of the deaths of a well known local couple on Monday afternoon. Gardai are currently investigating the deaths of Marie and Jim Quigley who both died on Monday. Marie’s body was found in her home in Rathmore at about 3.45pm on Monday afternoon where it is understood she suffered severe head injuries. Roughly two hours earlier Marie’s husband Jim was involved in a fatal accident after he collided with another car and a lorry when he drove the wrong way up the M1 motorway between junction 14 and 15 near Ardee. The driver and two passengers in the other car received

non life threatening injuries. Gardai took Mr Quigley’s registration plate and were on their way to his home in Rathmore, when one of the couple’s three sons found his mother’s body in the family home. According to Garda Superintendent Gerry Curley an incident room has been set up and Gardaí are investigating the possibility of a link between the two incidents. One line of enquiry the Gardai are following is that Jim took his own life after murdering his wife in their home. The couple have four adult children including a son who lives in Canada. The couple who were both in their 60’s were well-known in the local business community with Marie having Continued on Page 11

Truckers fearful of being attacked in Calais Local truckers are being threatened at knifepoint and in fear of their lives as desperate migrants try to force their way onto lorries hoping to reach Britain and Ireland where they look for asylum. Hauliers have been dealing with the problem of illegal migrant stowaways in Calais for years but according to James Quinn, owner of James Quinn Transport in Greenore the problem has reached epidemic proportions with violent attacks a regular occurrence in recent months. “Last week a migrant pulled a knife to one of my drivers demanding to be let into the back of the lorry. Luckily he had a three foot iron bar beside him and managed to deter his attacker but it’s becoming a really bad problem for hauliers all around the country”, explained James. “This is generally happening in Calais in France which is one of the busiest ports in the

world. The migrants will try to gain entry into the trailer by any means possible. If it’s a soft side on the lorry they will slit it open with a stanley knife and hide in the trailer until they reach Ireland or Britain. “It can be particularly scary for drivers at night time if they are delayed and have to stay at the side of the road overnight. I’m not without sympathy for migrants but my primary concern is my drivers and it is up to the French police to sort this out. If

a police officer catches a migrant trying to board a lorry they will throw him off, send him on his way which means the migrant is free to try the same thing again with the next lorry coming up the road”, stated James. As well as the threat of violence to his drivers James is also being hit in the pocket as haulage operators are fined €2000 per migrant found on board- regardless of whether the driver is aware the stowaway is on board. “To be honest I try and avoid going to Calais as much as possible now. Our drivers are intimidated and we are getting fined for something that is not our fault. Even though it’s more expensive to go through Holland we prefer to do it that way as Calais has just got too dangerous. Something needs to be done because this problem is getting worse and the migrants getting more violent”, warned James.

Wednesday night. The buzz around town had reached fever pitch by match night with 3200 Dundalk fans hopeful of a favourable result following their magnificent performance in Belarus. Before the game the Carrick Road was a sea of black and white as Dundalk supporters marched confidently towards Oriel Park where battle was about to commence. However, progression to the third qualifying round proved a step too far as experienced Champions League campaigners BATE dealt with everything Dundalk threw at them and creating the better chances during a night of real tension in the famous old Carrick Road venue. Dundalk’s best chance of the evening came through striker David McMillan who carved out a great opportunity for himself before seeing his shot saved by BATE keeper Sergei Chernik. Despite a gallant effort in the second half the Lilywhites just couldn’t breach a well drilled BATE defence and despite the game finishing 0-0 it was the away side who progressed 2-1 on aggregate.

team must focus on the bread and butter of the league as they hope to qualify for the Champions League once more in 2016. After the game Stephen Kenny rued not scoring another goal in Belarus where Dundalk were the better side but admitted that BATE had deserved to go through over the two legs. “It probably would have been harsh on BATE had we won but I feel we were very unfortunate in the firstleg.” ,stated Kenny. “We’re disappointed that we didn’t create enough chances in the second-half as we would have backed ourselves at half-time to do that. We’re kicking ourselves in that regard as the motivation was huge for us to get through where we would have played lesser opposition in terms of pedigree. “It was a tough draw that we got but we were outstanding away from home and very competitive. Now we have to concentrate on the league and try and get back in this competition next year.”, added the disappointed Dundalk manager.

A woman who reversed into another car at a supermarket car park before driving off was traced by Gardai after the incident was witnessed by another customer. As a result, Margaret McGuinness, of 10 Whitebarn Road, Churchtown, Dublin 14, who was visiting family in Dundalk, appeared before the local district court where she was convicted of careless driving and failing to remain at the scene of an accident. The witness stated that on April 6, 2014, he was waiting for his wife in the Aldi car park, Newry Road, when he saw the defendant reverse into another car. She stopped, checked her own car and then drove off. He took the registration number and gave it to the car driver when he came out of the shop. The witness stated that his recollection of the event was

not hazy and that he made an attempt to flag the woman down, but she didn’t see him. Ms McGuinness, a 70-yearold retired nurse manager, stated that she was in the car park on that date as her 93-year-old aunt had asked her to take her to the shop. Because of the age of her now deceased aunt, she always parked away from other cars in a car park. There was no car beside her when she arrived, but after coming out of the shop she noticed a red car beside her. She stated that she “looked in horror” at it because the door had been “bashed in”. She stated that after initially getting into her car, she did go to the boot again to secure plants which she had purchased for her parents’ grave. She then drove off and went to the graveyard nearby. When Gardai called to her

house a week later she was shocked and initially thought they had the wrong house. That was the first time she was aware of the incident. The defendant pointed out that the last 15 months had been “absolutely horrendous” and had taken over her life. She didn’t know why the witness had said what he did, but all she knew was what happened. Judge Grainne O’Neill stated that the first witness gave evidence of what he saw which set in train a series of events. “The inescapable thing is that he is a truly independent witness who involved himself in a dispute which could only lead to inconvenience for himself and that satisfies me beyond reasonable doubt”, stated the judge as she convicted the defendant. A fine of €300 was imposed for careless driving and €200 for failing to remain at the scene.

Ebuka selected to train with Celtic Glenmuir United Football Club are delighted to announce that Glenmuir United U-13 player Ebuka Kwelele has being selected by Celtic Soccer Academy Coaches to attend Glasgow during the October Mid-Term Break for a week long training sessions with Celtic Youth academy. This is an all-expenses paid opportunity by Celtic and is viewed as an extension of the initial opportunity presented to players that have been selected. Ebuka was selected after attending an Elite player opportunity academy camp in Dublin 3 weeks ago along with other participating clubs. Ebuka also attended the October

Ebuka Kwelele.

Soccer Camp held at Glenmuir Park and also travelled to Glasgow with the Glenmuir Team Tour and coaching week last April. Tony Massie (Celtic Soccer Academy International Manager) expressed huge thanks to all Glenmuir FC play-

ers for taking part and emphasised on their tremendous attitude, appetite to play the game and desire to learn. All players present represented their club, family and themselves extremely well. The coaches commented on how hungry many of the

players in their groups were to find out more; specifics about their positions and technical information to help them improve. Such is the interest in our partnership with Glasgow Celtic, Glenmuir United Football Club are to hold a player registration day for age groups at U-10 to U-18, a date will be announced very soon. This is due to the demand of players wanting to join our club and is a reflection of the very successful running of the club and coaching structure which has been developed over the past number of years. All at Glenmuir United Football Club would like to wish Ebuka all the best in the coming months.

Call to save Louth disability programme Sinn Féin Leader and Louth TD Gerry Adams has called on Tánaiste Joan Burton to intervene to prevent the closure of a hugely successful service for young people with disabilities in Louth. Mr Adams accused the Government of short-term thinking by decimating the Walk Peer Programme, which he said was clearly a successful and well-functioning service. Mr Adams outlined the importance of the programme, revealing that since 2013, the

Walk Peer Programme has helped young people with disabilities between the ages of 16 and 24 in Louth to gain valuable support, education and work experience. “The project is one of 14 funded under Disability Activation Projects (DACT), and has 119 participants with a broad spectrum of disabilities. “However, funding under DACT came to an end on April 30, yet the Government failed to put in place any alter-

native funding structure”, Mr Adams stated. “The closure of this project will be a very severe blow to young people with disabilities in Louth. Scrapping Walk Peer is short-term thinking by the Government which will have devastating consequences. “I have written to Joan Burton seeking her intervention and commitment to continue funding this hugely important project which is set to shut its doors on July 31”, continued the Sinn Fein deputy.

Man traced after leaving scene of an accident A man who was involved in a minor traffic accident, left the scene because he didn’t believe it to be a serious incident. However, Daniel O’Grady of Gravelstown, Carlanstown, Kells, Co Meath was later contacted by Gardai about the incident and as a result he appeared at Dundalk District Court where he pleaded guilty to hit and run charges. The cout heard that on March 9, 2014, Gardai spoke to a woman who told them she had been driving on the Avenue

Road when she was rear-ended by another car. The other driver left the scene but she was able to identify him. Solicitor, Conor MacGuill, stated that his client – who had ten previous convictions – had stopped behind the woman on a hill and it was his view that she had rolled back into him. He pointed out that there was an exchange between the drivers but not a meaningful one and his client did not leave details. The woman took his registration number and he was

easily indentified. There was an element of annoyance and he left, but Mr O’Grady accepted that he should have waited. He asked Judge Grainne O’Neill to be lenient with the 46-year-old unemployed man who supports three children. Judge O’Neill noted that everyone is required to remain at the scene and that as he didn’t volunteer any information, he could have gone untraced. She imposed fines of €200 on each of the two hit and run charges.

‘Eircodes’ were dispatched to all homes and businesses in Louth last week as the new national postcode system swings into gear. Letters will be sent to every residential and business address in the county today, informing them of the new Eircode for that specific address. Homes and businesses across Ireland are being notified of their Eircode over a two-week period.

Labour’s Minister Ged Nash said: “Fresh data shows that 23% of premises in Dundalk and 16% in Drogheda currently share their address with one or more properties. This causes all sorts of problems for postal services, businesses and ambulance services when they are trying to locate local addresses. “Eircode rectifies this problem by allocating every premises with their own unique code,

removing the potential for any error. “From now on, emergency services will be able to find the correct address more quickly, businesses can deliver goods and services more efficiently, while members of the public can shop easier online. It’ll also give people that extra bit of confidence that their mail now goes to the correct recipient. It will make life a little easier”, explained Minister Nash.

Call to provide funding for suicide prevention groups Calls have been made to help provide funding organisations such as SOSAD in their efforts to continue saving lives. Sinn Féin Louth TD Gerry Adams and Councillors Imelda Munster and Eimear Ferguson met with SOSAD (Save our Sons and Daughters) the Louth based suicide prevention organisation on Friday July 10 at their offices in Drogheda. SOSAD was founded in 2006 by Peter Moroney, with the help of family and friends, following the loss of his son Simon to suicide in 2003, and after their meeting, Gerry Adams praised the work of the centre. “I want to commend the work of SOSAD and the many other suicide prevention groups who provide an essential service helping individuals at risk of suicide and families traumatised by the death of a loved one”, stated Mr Adams who explained that in 2014 368 males and 91 females - took their own lives in this state. “Their efforts un-

doubtedly save lives every day. But they do so with inadequate resources and funding. In our conversation with SOSAD it is clear that there is a real concern at the lack of co-ordination involving state and local groups and agencies working on this issue”, the TD continued. The Sinn Fein leader added that the Government now needs to act on this by ensuring that a multi-agency approach also includes all of those community and

largely voluntary based groups and where necessary additional funding, especially for the provision of counselling services, should be provided. SOSAD provides a range of supports to anyone who may be affected or concerned about suicide. The services are completely free of charge, and SOSAD relies on the generosity and kindness of the wider community, and it relies also on sponsorship and fundraising.

Councillor Munster called for a co-ordinated, all-island strategy for tackling suicide.

“One significant contribution to tackling suicide and self-harm would be greater cooperation between the health services north and south.

“In particular the creation of an all-Ireland Suicide Prevention Agency that would co-ordinate the work of all of those involved would bring immediate benefits”, she stated.

Tomás Cotter’s Magic Mile By Paul Byrne

Blackrock man Tomás Cotter ran into the record books on Friday evening in Morton stadium in Santry as he joined an exclusive club of Irish athletes who have broken through the magical sub four minute mile barrier. Prior to Friday evening’s Morton Mile in Santry just 40 Irish athletes had ever run below the four minute mark for a mile and with his time of 3:58.50 Tomás became the 41st Irishman to achieve the magnificent feat. Tomás is currently a graduate assistant at his alma mater Wichita State having moved to America after receiving a scholarship when just 18 years old. A four-time Missouri Valley Conference champion, he still holds four Top 10 times at Wichita State, including third in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, eighth in the outdoor 1,500 meters, third in the indoor 1,000 meters and sixth in the indoor 3,000 meters. The 24 year old went into Friday’s prestigious Morton Mile as the lowest ranked athlete in the race and the only runner without a sponsor. However, Cotter finished like a steam train passing out world class

milers down the straight to finish in eighth place and more importantly breaking the magic four minute mark. According to Tomás the result is still sinking in given he was only invited to take part in the race just two weeks ago. “The Morton Mile is one of the most prestigious races in the world and I only got an invite to take part in it a couple of weeks ago after I ran a decent 3.43 for a 1500 metre race in London. I knew I was up against top class milers and my coach David Carrie said that this was a good chance to try and break the four minute mile.” ,explained Tomás. “It was actually a weird race as the first half was a bit slow and I didn’t actually think it was on. But I ran a

57 second final lap and I was passing people down the straight and I knew that I was close to doing it. When I seen my time I was stunned and just really really proud. I think only one other Louth man Eugene Curran has broken the four minute mile before and I beat him by 0.5 of a second so I’m now officially the fastest miler ever in Louth and about twentieth fastest in Irish history which just sounds surreal when you say it out loud. “ ,added the delighted Blackrock man. “The confidence this has given me is huge and I know I will only get better. It’s tough as an athlete not having a sponsor so hopefully this can open a few doors for me and help me progress to the next level.”

Emptied contents of bin onto street Local GAA stars prepare

A man who emptied the contents of a bin onto the street and then became abusive to Gardai told Dundalk District Court that he was not proud of his actions. Gerard Norton of 21 Cooley Park, Dundalk, was given the chance to avoid a conviction if he paid €250 to Dundalk Tidy Towns before October 7. The court heard that on June 21 this year at 3.35am the defendant was going past the XL Shop when he took a bin and emptied the rubbish on the street, before continuing with the bin. The defendant, who was very

drunk, was then caught in possession of the bin and became abusive to Gardai when told to return it. He was arrested due to his condition. Insp Martin Beggy stated that he presumed it was the council who cleaned up the rubbish. Solicitor, Conor MacGuill stated that his client’s first instruction was to apologise and that he regrets the incident which is not something he is proud of. He added that the night had started out as something enjoyable, perhaps too enjoyable, and in the company of others he took the bin.

Men’s Shed are picked for Tesco donation Members of Dundalk Men’s Shed receiving a cheque from David Darcy on behalf of Tesco.

The 22-year-old, who lives at home with his mother, admitted that he left it to others to clean up, and that he wanted to give the Gardai a personal apology. Mr MacGuill added that there was no serious intention of taking the bin and that it was an act of foolishness and disregard for people who put things into a bin for a reason. Judge Grainne O’Neill stated that she was not convinced by the defendant’s apology or remorse, stated that she would apply the Probation Act if the contribution was paid to Dundalk Tidy Towns.

MABS advice on Back to School Costs It won't be long until September is upon us and the kids go back to school, with all the associated costs. Rather than wait until the last weeks in August, it is a good idea to start planning now. Step 1. Know what you need and find out where you can cut costs 1. Is there a Book Rental Scheme ? 2. Can the books be bought second-hand 3. Does anyone you know have any of the books on the list. 4. School stationary can be cheaper when bought in large quanties - split the cost with a friend. 5. Do family or friends have children in the same school that may have out-grown their uniform. 6. Many uniforms in good condition are donated to local charity shops it may be worth checking. 7. Watch the shops for special promotions on school uniforms. Remember - kids grow quickly 8. Its important to be aware of other costs - arts & crafts, photocopying,Voluntary Contribution, The Principal can give you an idea of what is to be paid and when, then you can plan for it. Step 1. Make out a Budget After you have found out the costs of what you need to buy and the other costs associated with returning to school, it is now time to make out a budget to see how much money you need to meet the outstanding costs. Remember to make a list for each child. ITEM Books (see your booklist) Stationery Uniform * Skirt/trousers * Blouses/Shirts * Jumpers * Shoes/Trainers * Coat/Jacket * Tracksuit/other Physcial Ed. Costs Costs to be paid to the school * Photocopying costs * Arts & crafts * Voluntary Contribution Other Total

cost

Step 3. Planning how to meet the balance needed 1. Work out how many weeks are left until September & how much you need each week to cover the costs 2. Can you afford to cover the costs from your income? if not look at the budget again to see if you can reduce the costs 3. If you feel you have no option but to borrow, think whether you can afford the repayments, get the best rate(APR), only borrow what you need. 4. Life After Cancer. The Professor Hollywood Memorial Cup was set up in 2014 to help raise awareness that there can be Life After Cancer and that people can recover from this disease. It also raises funds for the cancer units in St. James’s and St. Luke’s hospitals. This is the second year that the two teams have battled it out for the Professor Hollywood Memorial Cup. In May 2014 Brian Cody and Mick O’Dwyer managed the teams in O’Moore Park and it raised a total of €44,300 for the cancer units.

Aidan, who works in the St John of God’s Venegas Centre on the Inner Relief Road, Dundalk, was just months short of his 30th birthday in 2006 when he was first diagnosed with cancer of the thyroid. Having got the all clear from the disease the cancer returned three years later before he beat it once again. “The only thing that I kept doing through all these times was training and playing Gaelic football so that is the main reason why I got involved in this match and also to increase the awareness through

sport and raise some vital funds for these great charities. My cousin Derek plays with the Dreadnots so it’ll be nice to play alongside him again this year having done so for the first time in last year’s charity game,” laughs Aidan. Derek was originally diagnosed with testicular cancer in 2008 before the disease returned again in 2011. And the former Louth Senior County footballer is also looking forward to togging out alongside his cousin. “I really enjoyed the day last year and it was a huge privilege for me to line up alongside so many players who have battled cancer and got back to the stage where they are fit enough to play football again. And it was great to line up alongside Aidan which I’m looking forward to doing again. We raised a good few euro last year for St James and St Luke’s and hopefully we

Big race fundraising night for The Birches Don’t miss the opportunity to support your local Alzheimer Day Centre this year as they face major funding cuts that may dramatically affect the continued services of Dundalk Birches. This year is the second year of the annual Fundraising Race Night at Dundalk Golf Club which was a huge success in 2014. Hosted by Image IT Group, over 100 local companies came on board last year to raise over €18,000 and 160 people attended the race night. According to Peter Durnin, Managing Director, Image IT Group over 100 tickets have already been sold and we expect to sell 250 tickets. “This is a great facility to have in our town that helps families who are dealing with Alzheimers. This Charity Race event gives local businesses the opportunity to sponsor a Race, Jockey, or to make a donation”, says Durnin. “100% of all money raised goes directly to the Birches and all sponsors will be acknowledge in the race programme and on digital screens throughout the Golf Club”. This year’s event is taking place again at Dundalk Golf Club on Friday 21st of August. With 12 digital screens set across the Golf Club, great food, live entertainment and dancing into the wee hours, the race night is set to be a night to re-

member. If you are not yet familiar with how Alzheimer affects lives, visit www.thebirches.ie to find out more about how this wonderful facility gives a new lease of life to Alzheimer patients here in Dundalk. The Birches needs €90K in order to keep going. The Fundraising Race Night at Dundalk Golf Club is one of the events which gives businesses and individuals the opportunity of giving back to the community and helping to maintain a valuable service that is facing a funding crisis. The Durnin family with their usual enthusiasm are aiming to beat last year’s total of €18,200. If you are a business and are in a position to support The Birches at this event with a sponsorship please contact Peter Durnin on 086 0280506 / peter@imageitgroup.ie All sponsors will be acknowledge in the race programme and on digital screens throughout the Club. Dundalk Golf Club wins Leinster Junior Cup Dundalk Golf Club won the Leinster Junior Cup for the first time in 21 years on Sunday after a dramatic weekend of action at Portarlington Golf Club. After two days of action and three matches, everything came down to the final match on the course where Richard Newell won on the 19th hole to give Dundalk a 3-2 victory over Clontarf and the Leinster title. The team, which was managed by Terry Conlon and Clem Walsh, arrived at the Co Laois venue as one of eight teams vying for the coveted Leinster pennant, They faced Hermitage on Saturday morning in the quarter-finals and won by 3.5 to 1.5 with Ciaran Sheridan winning his match 3&2, Richard Newell

taking his 4&2 and Josh Mackin edging his by one hole. That earned the team a semifinal joust with Woodbrook and after Eoin Murphy had won 3&2 and Richard Newell had won 4&2 the pressure was on anchor man Aaron King with the match tied at 2-2. King held a one hole lead standing on the 18th tee and he kept his nerve to win the final hole for a two up victory and earn Dundalk a 3-2 win and a place in the final. A 3&1 win for Ciaran Sheridan and 4&3 victory for Eoin Murphy was balanced by defeats for Josh Macken, who lost 3&2, and Aaron King, who was beaten 7&6. That left the sides level at 2-2 and meant the destination of the title came down to the final match

out of the course where Richard Newell was looking for his third win of the weekend, All square after 18, Newell and his Dublin opponent headed down the 19th with the Clontarf player in the centre of the fairway after his drive while Newell was further on but in the first cut of rough on the left. The Clontarf player put his approach shot over the back of the green while Newell hit a superb shot to within six feet. When his opponent sent his difficult downhill chip off the green and then failed to hole his return shot, Newell was left with two putts for victory and he duly obliged to send the large Dundalk following home happy.

Back To School N

othing spells the end of summer holidays like seeing the uniforms and books in the shop windows around this time of year. Back to school costs can exceed those of Christmas, with books, uniforms, stationery and fees heaped to make it an expensive time of year. But, there is relief for families – as well as schools working to cut costs for families, and the expansion of the school book rental scheme, families can apply for the Back to School Clothing and Footwear allowance. The allowance is designed to help families meet the costs of the required school uniform. In some cases the BTSCFA will automatically be paid to families with children under 18 years old, meaning they don’t have to make a formal application. To be eligible for the allowance the applicant (parent or guardian) must be receiving certain social welfare payments or payments for training, employment schemes or adult education. Total household income must also be below a certain amount. The rate of payment is age related as follows: €100 for each child aged 4-11 on or before 30th September 2015, €200 for each child aged 12-22 on or before 30th September 2015. If you have a child over 18 years who will be returning to second-level education, you will need to apply for the allowance of this child again and provide confirmation that they are returning to secondlevel education. Recent reports said that parents of second-

ary school children are spending an average €258 on a new uniform for September. Those of youngsters in primary

school are also feeling the financial strain, having to fork out an average of €166 for each child. Those figures

were released by the Irish League of Credit Unions, which warned that almost a third of parents expect to get

into debt when preparing their children for the new school year, with loans averaging €360. Aine Lynch, chief executive of the National Parents Council, says that while costs have come down and new book rental schemes are in place, concerns remain over the annual hit families have to take. “I think ultimately the costs are too high,” she said. “Children go to schools all over the country and they have no uniform and they have no difficulty getting a good education, so I think it is important that uniforms are not imposed.”

The credit union survey of 1,000 parents also revealed the pressure to make voluntary contributions to schools – seven out of 10 parents expect to make these payments, an average of €112 per child, down from €119 last year. The survey showed the cost of books for secondary school pupils is €213 for this September, a huge jump from €166 last

year, while for national school children it was €162, up from €140. The ILCU said a quarter of parents will use savings and 12% will use credit cards to cover back-to-school costs. Warning of the difficul-

ties of running a household when extra bills hit home, the survey found 72% of parents admit the costs will hurt their ability to pay bills and keep family plans, and 70% – compared with 80% last year – sacrificed

this year’s family holiday or children’s summer camps to cover the costs. More shockingly, 16% of parents said they will sacrifice spending on food to meet the expense. Some 2% reported they would use a

moneylender to pay the back-to-school bills. Founder of the Irish Financial Review Frank Conway said: “As the findings of this study reveal, many families across Ireland struggle to cover the cost of a child,

or even several children, going back to school and college. “Costs can run into thousands and for some families the only way of closing the financial gap is through debt, including the use of money-

lenders. Where debt is used, the cost of items, including school uniforms can double when expensive interest charges are factored in.” Dundalk has a fine array of shops to choose from when selecting

your back to school purchases and we have put together a few to help you choose and help you shop local. Whatever age your child is, you will be sure to find good value right here on your doorstep.

Claustrophobic man Stars of the future show didn’t want any help skills at Oriel Park A man who didn’t want assistance from ambulance personnel or Gardai, explained that the reason he became aggressive was due to the fact that he was claustrophobic. As a result of the incident on July 5 this year, Shane Rooney of 56 Church View Tce, Kilkeel, Co Down, appeared at Dundalk District Court where he was spared a convic-

tion thanks to an early apology to Gardai. Insp Martin Beggy stated that at 1.05am on the date in question, an ambulance had been contacted in relation to an intoxicated male walking on the road. Mr Rooney, who was agitated and disorientated, declined attention. Gardai were then contacted but he resisted arrest and incapacitant spary had to be used

to restrain him. He was described as being quite a difficult prisoner. The Inspector stated that he later apologised. The defendant, who had no previous convictions, stated that he didn’t go out drinking that much. “I am claustrophobic and I don’t like people around me. I had pains in my chest and the Gardai were trying to help be but I didn’t re-

alise it at the time. Judge Grainne O’Neill accepted a contribution of €250 towards North Louth Hospice and dismissed the charge under the Probation Act. “He has no previous convictions and apologised on the night which carries more weight than an 11th hour apology”, she stated.

Blackrock heritage week

Blackrock Tidy Towns have announced details of this year’s National Heritage Week event in the village. Local historian and author Noel Sharkey will continue his series of annual on-site talks with a presentation at the Sundial on the sinking of the “Mary Stoddart” just off Blackrock in April 1858. Eleven men lost their lives in what was the worst disaster ever in Dundalk Bay. Seven were crew members, but four were

local people who died in the rescue attempt. One was Captain James Kelly, whose name was subsequently immortalised following the erection of the Kelly monument in Roden Place to commemorate all those who perished in the disaster. Another was James Crosbey from Main Street, Blackrock, who was only 25 when he died. Noel will follow a detailed timeline of the events of that fateful week and, in conjunction with Charlie Mc-

Carthy, has produced a comprehensive handout to accompany the talk. The evening will culminate with the unveiling of two plaques - one at the site of the house where James Crosbey died after being brought ashore, and a second marking the location of the first Blackrock Lifeboat station which was inaugurated as a response to the disaster. The talk will take place on the evening of Thursday August 27, and admission is free.

Many of Dundalk’s most promising young footballers took to the hallowed Oriel Park turf last week for the ever popular FAI Summer Soccer Schools. The camps aim to provide children between the ages of 6 and 14 the opportunity to attend a week-long football sum-

mer camp over the holiday period. Every year boys and girls of all abilities turn out to enjoy five days where they can test and improve their skills under the guidance of the experienced coaches. While participants will learn new skills and tricks, one of the most important

elements of the camp is that they are fun and that all children enjoy them. In a week where Dundalk FC proved themselves able to compete at Champions League level, the quality of players at the camp proved that the future is bright for local football.

Shouldn’t have taken law into own hands Wedding Showroom

A man who was told that his prospects would not be enhanced with a conviction for assault, was given the chance to preserve his clean record if he made a contribution of €400 to the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Dun Laoghaire. Stephen Grimes of 237 Greenfield Court, Tom Bellew Ave, Dundalk, admitted assaulting

a man whom he believed was responsible for an accident that left his aunt seriously injured. He was told by Judge Grainne O’Neill that if he made the contribution by September 2 the case would be dealt with under the Probation Act. The court heard that on October 2, 2014, the defendant entered a house on the Armagh

Road where the injured party was working as a tiler. He punched him and left but was located by Gardai in the vicinity. He admitted the assault which resulted in bruising but no lasting injury. Solicitor, Paula Tiernan, stated that there had been ongoing difficulty between the defendant and the injured party. He believes that he is the driver

responsible for an accident in which his aunt received serious injuries 13 months ago. She is now in a semi-conscious state in the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Dun Laoghaire, and unable to communicate with family. He accepted that he shouldn’t have taken the law into his own hands.

the new Ford EcoSport SUV

There is a choice of three Euro 6 compliant engines, either a diesel 1.5-litre TDCi which now outputs 95PS, a 5PS improvement over the old model; emissions are rated at 115g/km with a combined fuel figure of 64.2 mpg according to NEDC testing. Should you suffer a puncture then there is a tyre inflation kit. Driving dynamics have been improved with revised springs,

dampers, rear torsion beam where the Electronic Stability Programme and Electronic Power Assisted Steering settings have also been tweaked for European roads. The interior sees a number of styling enhancements, including partial leather seats on Titanium models, there is now a charcoal black lower instrument panel, centre console and door boards. Where the instrument cluster now features a light dimming function and there are chromesurround rings to compliment the electric window switches.

And noise has been reduced with thicker sound deadening materials. Privacy glass is now available for all EcoSport trim levels and so is the winter pack option comprising heated windscreen, heated mirrors and heated front seats plus rear seat ventilation at floor level. All models feature Ford’s SYNC voice-controlled connectivity system with a 4-inch colour display in the centre console.
