Move towards cashless society angers former Dundalk retailer
By Tamara O’Connell
LocaL man Jock Mcardle told the Dundalk Leader that it would be “madness” to make NcT test centres cashless.
The well-known former retailer said that he is “totally against the idea” as “it would give too much power to the banks to control all of your money”.
“The banks will charge fees on cards and your €50 would diminish for example. I think it’s a total con job by banks and big business,” he said.
The operator of the NcT, applus+ recently announced that test centres were going cashless for the “safety and convenience” of customers.
Since the announcement, Minister of State at the Department of Transport Jack chambers has said that no change has been agreed that would make the NcT cashless. The Minister confirmed yesterday morning (Tuesday) that the national car testing service will not be removing cash as a payment option.
“I was in retail for 40 years and one christmas, all of the Visa machines crashed and people had to queue outside the aTM to get cash,” said Jock.
“It’s a small example of what can happen. a storm had caused an electrical fault. It’s absolute madness. I can’t see it working.

“I was in retail for 40 years and one Christmas, all of the Visa machines crashed and people had to queue outside the ATM to get cash,” said Jock.
“It’s a small example of what can happen. A storm had caused an electrical fault. It’s absolute madness. I can’t see it working.
“If the payment machines went down in the supermarket, you’ve got no other option until the power is restored.”
Jock added: “There is a place for credit and debit cards in society but I don’t think peo-
ple should be overly reliant on them.
“Nature has to be taken into account. There could be thunderstorms, lightning and a pylon could come down.
“What do you do? Where do you go? Some people might also find it harder to keep track of their spending.”
He concluded: “People don’t realise what they would be giving away by changing into a cashless society.
“The younger generation have grown up with electronic devices. They don’t know what they will lose by going cashless.
“For older generations, cash was king as they say. The younger generation is giving away serious freedom.”
Last year a European Central Bank survey showed that Ireland have been embracing using cards or mobile apps when shopping.
37% of all transactions in 2022 were done using a card and while 54% of consumers used cash for in store purchases that figure was 19% lower than in 2019. It was also 5% lower than the eurozone average of 59%. Of the 19 Eurozone countries Ireland was second only to Belgium when it came to shopping online.
Redemptoris Mater Seminary home to fifteen seminarians
CONSTRUCTION of the new extension to the Redemptoris Mater Seminary in Dundalk is “making good progress”, according to the Rector of the Redemptoris Mater Seminary, Archdiocese of
Armagh, Fr Giuseppe Pollio.
The Redemptoris Mater Seminary on De La Salle Terrace was established in 2012 as an institution of the Archdiocese of Armagh in the Catholic Church. Its purpose is to form priests for the New Evangelisation who will serve both as diocesan and missionary clergy.
“We have been here for the past 11 years in Dundalk. There are 15 seminarians in formation. Their vocations come from the Neocatechumenal Way,” said Fr Giuseppe.
When the seminarians are ordained, they will become diocesan priests of the Archdiocese of Armagh, but they are also prepared to serve, if required, in other parts of Ireland and overseas. They are therefore both diocesan and missionary.
“Since its foundation, five priests have already been ordained, and two deacons will be ordained in St Patrick’s Cathedral in Armagh on October 8, 2023,” he said.
“The five ordained priests are serving in Ardee, Dundalk, Newry, Lurgan and Magherafelt.
“The Redemptoris Mater Seminary has a unique mission to form priests with a strong missionary impulse.”

Fr Giuseppe added: “The goal of this formation is to form priests who can embody a missionary dynamic, whether they serve in parishes locally or undertake missions abroad.
“The men who are in formation here are formed according to the four pillars of formation indicated in the Ratio Fundamentalis Sacerdotalis: human, spiritual, academic, and pastoral.
“As part of their formation, the seminarians also attend a local neocatechumenal community composed of families, young people and older people.”
Fr Callum Young is also based at the Redemptoris Mater Seminary in Dundalk. He was ordained on June 29, 2021.
“As a seminarian I spent some time on mission in the Holy Land for a year and in Bahrain. Some people spend three years on mission in countries such as Mozambique, Argentina and South Africa,” said Fr Callum.
“It was helpful to see the reality of the Church across the world. It helped me a lot to be amongst these people and to speak of the love of God.
“It helps to build a relationship which is based on faith and not just cultural norms and similarities.”

Solomon shortlisted for Zurich Young Artist Portrait Prize
A DUNDALk Grammar School student has been shortlisted for this year’s Zurich Young Artist Portrait Prize.
Solomon Doyle from Ardee is a 6th year student at Dundalk Grammar School. He has been interested in art ever since he was a young child.
The 17-year-old told the Dundalk Leader that he has “always been interested in drawing, but only started painting earlier this year”.
“The first time I painted was in March at school and I think I enjoy it even more than drawing now,” said Solomon.
“I came across the Zurich Young Artist Portrait Prize last year. I read an article about the winners.
“My entry for this year’s competition is a self-portrait and it took about a week. I almost exclusively paint selfportraits.”
He added: “I start with a photograph and always use a mirror. I
wouldn’t say it was difficult but it was tedious sometimes.
“I was quite surprised when I got a phone call telling me I had been short-listed for the competition. I wasn’t expecting it.
“I’ve been short-listed in the 16-18 age category and the winners will be announced at a ceremony on December 12. I’m looking forward to it.”
The Zurich Portrait Prize shortlist includes painting, sculpture and photography, demonstrating the breadth of contemporary Irish art.
The winner of the Zurich Portrait Prize will receive a cash prize of €15,000 and will be commissioned to create a work for the national portrait collection, for which they will be awarded a further €5,000.
Two additional awards of €1,500 will be given to highly commended works. Judges for the Zurich Portrait Prize are Dorothy Cross
RHA, artist, Dr Nicholas Cullinan, Director, National Portrait Gallery, London, and Anne Stewart, Senior Curator of Art, National Museums Northern Ireland.
The Zurich Young Portrait Prize returns for its fifth year in 2023 as a showcase for the artistic talent of young people from across the island of Ireland.
Five winners (one from each respective age category and an overall winner) will be
selected from a shortlist of hundreds of entries from young people aged four to 18.
Winners will receive a bespoke art box and a cash prize. The overall competition winner will be awarded a personalised wooden box of high-quality art materials and a cash prize of €500.
All 20 shortlisted entrants will have their artwork professionally framed/prepared. This year’s Zurich Young
Portrait Prize judges are: Jessica O’Donnell, Head of Education and Community Outreach, Hugh Lane Gallery, Ola Majekodunmi, writer, broadcaster and producer, and Tom McLean, visual artist and curator. Exhibitions of the shortlisted works in both competitions run at the National Gallery of Ireland from 2 December 2023 and 10 March 2024.

C O - OPERATIVE
Housing Ireland (CHI)
unveiled a new piece of communal artwork at Halliday Mills, Quay Street, Dundalk on Saturday. The artwork was officially launched by Cllr Conor kee-
lan and was created by artist Seán Atmos.
The colourful design was created as part of a community project in consultation with Members to adorn the complex’s communal area, which serves as
a space for community gatherings and events.
The design includes footprints and laces to honour the history of the site as a shoe factory, and petals and blooms to represent the new growth of the vibrant community at Halliday Mills.
Speaking at the event, Cllr Conor keelan said, “It’s wonderful to see a community so invested in working together to achieve a common goal. The fact that people living here were willingly involved in the process of choosing the artwork is testament to the level initiative present.”
Local community services staff attended the event from Merchant’s Quay Ireland, SOSAD, Youth Work Ireland and the local community gardaí. CHI was delighted to have
the support of local organisations in launching the artwork.
Speaking at the event, Dave Mayner of CHI said, “It is my pleasure as Director of Housing Services and Community Engagement to be here today to celebrate the unveiling of this artwork with
the Halliday Mills community. Halliday Mills was selected for the delivery of a community development project, the aim of which was to improve the physical space of the building and have a positive impact on Member tenants daily. Tenants here really got
involved in the process and influenced the direction and design of this artwork, exercising agency over their shared space.”

Dundalk arch Club to re-open next week
DUNDALk Arch Club
is a volunteer group offering a social outlet, primarily for persons with additional needs/ special needs since 1977 at the Dominican Hall at St. Malachy’s School, Dundalk. Having closed in 2020 during Covid, the club will re-open next Thursday, September 7th at the Dominican Hall.
Dundalk Arch Club is part of a network of friendship clubs offering the opportunity to develop social skills and make friends.
In previous years the club offered music and dancing, birthday, halloween and Christmas parties, arts and crafts, shopping in the evening and zoo trips. It is hoped to continue and develop this in the future.
The first Arch Club was founded in 1976 by a small group of parents in Dublin looking for a social outlet for their children. A similar gateway group operated in Newry, Co.Down. Seeing this new trend, Dundalk Parents and Friends of the Intellectually Disabled, opened Dundalk Arch Club in Mill Street in October 1977.
They soon moved to the Dominican Hall, Anne Street and operated continuously there
until it closed due to Covid19 in March 2020.
The Club was a great success due to the dedication of the committees and volunteers over the years who witnessed the joy the club evenings and outings brought to our members.
There are now 40 Clubs in 15 Counties.
The nearest to Dundalk are in Monaghan, Drogheda, Navan and Trim.
The National Federation of Arch Clubs aim for at least one club in every county.
David Larkin, a com-
mittee member of the Arch Club, thanked everybody who helped facilitate the return of the arch club.
“We extend our thanks to Fr. Prior David Barrins O.P. at St Malachy’s Church for providing the hall and to Seamus Harmon for all the help in arranging each evening. We wish to thank all our

Over 3,000 people left Emergency Department without being treated
DUNDALk TD Ruairí Ó Murchú has this week published data from the HSE which shows that 3,111 patients left the emergency department at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda in the first five months of the year without being seen, compared to 1,764 for the same period in 2019.
The Sinn Féin TD said that this is caused by extremely long emergency department waiting times of 10.5 hours on average so far this year at the Lourdes.
And Deputy Ó Murchú called on the Minister for Health to urgently review emergency department capacity at Our Lady of Lourdes and to invest in community-based alternatives such as out-of-hours GP
and late-night pharmacies.
He said that, ultimately, ‘more beds and staff are needed at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital to reduce waiting times, as well as a significant increase in GP capacity.
Deputy Ó Murchú said: ‘These figures show that 3,111 patients left emergency departments without being seen from January to May this year, in comparison to 1764 for the same period in 2019.
Waiting times in the Lourdes’ ED have increased from 9.2 in 2022 to 10.5 so far this year, which is driving patients to leave without being treated.
‘The high number of patients leaving EDs without being seen is highly concerning. Patients are

‘Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil have brought the health service to its knees, with waiting times worse than ever. GP practices are bursting at the seams and it is proving more difficult than ever to get onto a GP register in Dundalk at the moment, ultimately putting more pressure on the Lourdes.
‘Hospitals are grappling with a lost decade of underinvestment. This is heaping more pressure on emergency departments.

‘Young graduates continue to emigrate in their droves. Meanwhile, there are record levels of spending on outsourcing to the private sector instead of building public capacity.
‘The Minister for Health needs to get to grips with this crisis. We need an urgent review of emergency department capacity, and ultimately, we need more beds and staff for the Lourdes Hospital.
“Sinn Féin would ramp up training places to increase staffing in hospitals, in the community, and in general practice to reduce the pressures on emergency departments.
‘We would engage with health-
care workers and address the cost of living and housing crises to increase worker retention. We would invest in expanding hospital capacity on a consistent, multi-annual basis, as outlined in our Alternative Budgets, to tackle overcrowding in emergency departments.
‘The key to this does not just lie within the hospitals, where incredible work is being done by medical and care staff, particularly in the Lourdes. CHO8 also has to step up here and provide more care in the community, at an earlier point in people’s illnesses, so that people don’t have to go to the ED as a last resort and they have to be properly resourced by government to do that’.

LOCAL school Coláiste Chú Chulainn is celebrating top grades across 30 different Leaving Certificate subjects this year.
Principal Thomas Sharkey said:
“Our students have been hitting the top grade across all 30 subjects taken in school this year. They have achieved an outstanding set of results.

Our students hit the national average in Higher Level Maths.

working hard under their teachers and parents’ guidance to realise their full potential.
“This was our first set of Leaving Cert Physical Education as an exam subject and, like all subjects in our school, we achieved many H1 and H2 grades.
“We are particularly proud that many students took the Leaving Certificate exam in their heritage languages. Swedish, Finn-
ish, Italian, Russian, Lithuanian, Mandarin and Polish all figured in our results.
Ms Maria Nic Eochaidh was Year Head to the class of 2023 and said:

“We wish every single graduate every happiness and success in their careers and studies.”
Counsellors Ms Dara Mee & Ms Ciara o’Meara were on hand to offer support, students were generally feeling positive and hopeful that their chosen pathway was now open to them. Students have achieved the highest grades, many exceeding the coveted 500 points + and have bright futures in the most soughtafter courses.
Fears around the results in Maths, following a challenging Paper 1 were unfounded with all students in the Higher Maths Classes earning the extra 25 points.
A number of students will now receive bursaries from Universities as a result of their excellent results including trinity College
these students had great praise for the support they received from teachers and Special Needs assistants who supported their journey, over the years. the sense of relief was palpable from the gathering as teachers beamed at the success of their students and parents felt the heavy burden of worry lift.
Parents affirmed the special relationships the girls had enjoyed over their six years at the school and thanked Principal Michelle Dolan, Deputy Principal Mary gilmore, the Year Head Marie Meehan and all the staff for the care and effort that culminated in such a wonderful success for all involved. the sun was shining as parents, students and teachers hugged for a final time, sending the girls off to achieve their full potential and continue to be excellent ambassadors for the school, on what happened to be the feast day of Saint Louis!

St. Gerard, friend of sinners, friend of the poor, friend of mothers and children, it is our joy and consolation to come to your novena to remember the goodness of your life, your burning sense of God your tender love for Our Lord and his mother, Mary, your kindness and care for everyone in need. Holy Spirit, you who makes me see everything and shows me the way to reach my ideal, you who gives me the divine gift to forgive and forget all the wrong that is done to me and you who are in all instances of my life with me. I, in this short dialogue, want to thank you for everything, and affirm once more that I never want to be separated from you no matter how great the material desires may be. I want to be with you and my loved ones… in your perpetual glory. Amen To that end, and submitting to God’s holy will, I ask from you… (mention your favor). You must pray this prayer 3 consecutive days. After the 3rd day your wish shall be granted no matter how difficult It may be. Promise to publish the dialogue as your favour has been granted M.McG.

Blessed to God in His Angels and in His Saints. St. Anthony, gentlest of Saints, your love for God and Charity for His creatures, made you worthy, when on earth, to possess miraculous powers. Miracles waited on your word, which you were ready to speak for those in trouble or anxiety. Encouraged by this thought, I ask you to obtain for me the favors that I seek (mention your request here). The answer to my prayer may require a miracle, even so, you are the Saint of Miracles. O gentle and loving St. Anthony, whose heart was ever full of sympathy, whisper my petition into the ears of the Infant Jesus, who loved to be folded in your arms; and the gratitude of my heart will ever be yours. Amen. F.K.

Folk group Greenshine play Carrick next weekend
CORk family trio, Greenshine, make a welcome return to Monaghan when they play the beautiful TIN CHURCH in Laragh on Saturday 2 September.
Greenshine’s albums are known to be an eclectic mix of genres which dovetail perfectly thanks to their harmonies, instrumentation and production style.
For their critically acclaimed latest album, NEW MOON ON FRIDAY, the band was interested in exploring their Country, Americana and American Folk influences and the collection features their original songs along with some classic covers.
One such cover is Jimmy Webb’s beautiful ‘Wichita Lineman which was received very favourably by the great songwriter himself. What a boost for the band and especially for Ellie who sang lead on the track, as Wichita Lineman is her favourite song of all time. To
have the endorsement of the writer is really special. While NEW MOON ON FRIDAY is an eclectic mix, it’s a smorgasbord that’s laid out in the broad church that is Country.
On here you’ll find styles that range from Classic Country Torch Songs, through South-

Drawing on his recently published book ‘Republicanism, Crime and Paramilitary Policing, 1916-2020’ which examined the relationship between Irish republicanism, policing and crime from 1916 to the present day, Dr Hanley will concentrate on the early part of his work for his talk.
This describes republican attempts to deal with crime during the War of Independence, the problems caused by the Civil War split and how the organization grappled with accusations of criminality throughout much of the twentieth century. This book contains much new information on the IRA’s role in policing crime during the War of Independence. It looks at the way in which accusations of involvement in crime were weaponized during the Civil War as well as the IRA’s attitude to crime and criminals thereafter.
