Opportunistic thieves targeted the Carlingford and Greenore area on Sunday as residents were attending the annual Blessing of the Graves at St Michael’s Cemetery Carlingford. Gardaí received reports of a spate of burglaries during the ceremony and believe that the thieves are not from the area but travelled from elsewhere in the knowledge that a number of homes would be empty as families attended the event. Gardai are advising that when events like this are taking place, people should consider leaving someone to mind the property and keep an eye on the area. Speaking about the string

of burglaries at the weekend, a Garda representative appealed for vigilance. “If you are vacating your home for these type of public events, just leave someone in charge,” he said. Cllr Jim Loughran echoed the Gardai’s advice and urged people to be extra vigilant when there are events on which many in the community attend. “I’ve heard about the spate of burglaries around Carlingford and Greenore as people attended the Blessings of the Graves and unfortunately this is happening all too often nowadays. I’ve heard the same reports from Faughart and Kilcurry recently as well.”, explained the Sinn Fein councillor. See Page 10

Garry and his teammates will take their place in the Paddy Power Cup alongside England and the Netherlands in what is a very tough Group 2, while Group 1 sees Poland Germany and Belgium battle it out in the two day competition. Back in 2009, as a result of a work accident, Garry had his leg amputated and he is now looking forward to what will be the biggest amputee football event ever held

in this country. “We’ve been training really hard over the last few months and we’re all raring to go at this stage. All the hard work has been done and now we can’t wait for the first game on Saturday against England”, said Garry. “We’ve worked hard raising funds throughout the year to make sure this competition took place and we’d like to thank all the friends and family who helped us raise over €7,000 when the team took on the challenge earlier this year of the Great Limer-

ick Run Marathon relay. “We’re hoping that people come down to Limerick to support the event and hopefully the competition will raise awareness of amputee football and help the sport grow over the next few years”, added Garry. We have been invited to the Amputee World Cup in Mexico next year so once this tournament is finished we’ll be focusing on fundraising to try and take part in that. Our sport is growing and is now played in over 30 countries around the world. Even-

tually we hope to given paralympic status”, he added. Amputee football is played using one goalkeeper and six outfield players. Outfield players may have two hands but only one leg whereas goalkeepers may have two feet but only one hand. The game is played with metal crutches without prostheses. Trouble makers are not real fans By Paul Byrne

DUNDALK FC is on the up as is the support for the team and the buzz about Oriel Park is infectious. However following arrests following two home games in recent weeks, Gardaí say there are concerns that a number of people were travelling to the area on match days with the sole aim of causing trouble. Gardaí made a number of Public Order arrests on Friday night after Dundalk’s win over Shamrock Rovers. However it is not the football that was attracting the individuals to town. “They don’t support

any team, they appear to be from various locations travelling to the area to make trouble,” said a Garda representative. There were no incidents inside the grounds of Oriel Park. Usually away supporters are kept inside the grounds for a few minutes to allow the Dundalk fans clear the area, and then they too make their way home on busses or trains. However those who had been arrested on Friday night had not attended the match, and were located between Oriel Park and the town centre as Dundalk fans made their way home.

Colm Murphy Dundalk FC’s spokesman also stressed that these people are not true football fans and that the Shamrock Rovers supporters attending the match were perfectly well behaved. “The atmosphere in the grounds was just electric; it’s a great night out and family friendly. We can’t let a few individuals ruin that,” he said. “The other clubs won’t have anything to do with them. They are no addition and we don’t want them anywhere near us”, he said. Fans of League of Ireland teams have

previously shown support for each others’ clubs in their hours of need. Last year, when Dundalk FC was in financial difficulties, Shamrock Rovers fans paid twice into their Oriel Park fixture to help with the fundraising effort. The club has been in discussion with Gardaí about their concerns. However, the club are confident that there will be no further incidents. The individuals in question are not associated with any of the teams that Dundalk will face at home before the end of the season. No further trouble is anticipated.

Man attempted to collect Social Welfare for friend Two men appeared in Dundalk District Court in relation to charges of deception and forgery after one attempted to collect a Social Welfare payment for a friend who was out of the country.

sus Rd, Dundalk on July 24. Alex Kolawole Isijola of 25 Riverside Crescent was charged with deception on July 10, 17 and 24. The court was told that the payments were

due to Mr Isijola but were collected by Mr Ibrahim as he was out of the country at the time. The total amount involved was €563.50. The case was adjourned to November 13.

Scoil Rince Móna Ní Rodaigh’s dance company “Anóm Dance” (a fun play on the boss’ name ‘Mona’), featuring dancers aged 12-19 performed a medley of both traditional and

Bed push over mountains in aid of Crumlin hospital

A local man’s efforts to raise money for the ‘Fix Crumlin’ hospital appeal as well as Cystic Fibrosis proved a huge success as roughly a hundred people joined him in his trek across the Cooley Mountains pushing a bed. This is the second year Oliver O’Shaughnessy has organised a fundraiser for the ‘Fix Crumlin’ hospital appeal but this time he is also raising money for Cystic Fibrosis. Oliver’s seven year old son Daniel suffers from a disease called severe aplastic anaemia which means his bonemarrow is unable to produce red and white blood cells. As a regular visitor

to Crumlin, Oliver was moved to try and help the hospital raise some much needed funds to rebuild the crumbling building. “Our seven year old boy Daniel is an outpatient in Crumlin and the staff up there have been absolutely fantastic. “Unfortunately thehospital requires a major revamp and they need to raise €8 million to help raise funds for the renovation of the cardiac and cancer care facilities. “Thanks to fundraising all throughout the year they have built a new cancer care unit but there is still a lot of work to be done and that’s what the bed push is about really “ explained Ollie. Oliver’s bed which

has ‘Fix Crumlin emblazoned on the front now has ‘4 CF’ added to reflect the addition of Cystic Fibrosis in his fundraising efforts. On a fine summer’s morning Ollie and his supporters set out from Fitzpatrick’s pub in Lordship as they made their way across the Cooley mountains into Carlingford. “I was delighted with the response we got to our appeal”, said Oliver after the walk. “The walk probably took us about three and a half hours and we plenty of people join us and we took it easy as we made our way across the Cooley Mountains. I’d like to thank everybody for coming out and supporting us and making the event a suc-

cess” enthused a delighted Oliver. Oliver and the rest of the bed push team where brought back to Fitzpatricks thanks to Anchor Tours where they proceeded to have a great night with music courtesy of ‘The Mulligan Family’ greeting them on their arrival. “We had a great night in Fitzpatrick’s and I’d like to thank them for putting on food for us and looking after us on the evening. “I’d also like to thank the Mulligan family from Ard Easmuinn who played traditional music for us for free. “At this stage the money is still coming in so I’d sincerely like to thank everybody for coming along and helping us out” he added.

Walki zbrojne zakończyły się natomiast 2 października 1944 w godzinach wieczornych. Pułkownik Adam Borkiewicz zaproponował następującą periodyzację powstania: ogólne natarcie powstańcze dla opanowania Warszawy (1-4 sierpnia), okres powstańczej obrony zaczepnej (5 sierpnia – 2 września), walka o przetrwanie (3 września – 2 października)http:// pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Powstanie_warszawskie - cite_notePrzygo.C5.84ski16-75. Residents from one of Dundalk’s best known communities is preparing for a huge celebration to mark 80 years in existence. O’Hanlon Park and Hillview was constructed in 1933 and the Residents Association are planning to invite all past and present residents to a special gathering over the coming months. According to committee chairman, Anthony Taaffe, they are looking for ideas and suggestions for the best way to celebrate the past 80 years.

“During that time a lot of families went through the area and it would be great to get as many as possible together for one night. “Naturally there are people all across the globe who have lived in the area but there a so many big families now spread all over Dundalk and we are calling on them to meet up for a night”, explained Anthony. “At the minute we are just putting the idea out there with the plan to do something before the end of the year. We are hoping people will get back to us with any suggestions and so we can get an idea of numbers.

Meanwhile, the O’Hanlon Park & Hillview Residents Association held their AGM recently with the following committee elected: Chairperson – Anthony Taaffe; Vice Chairperson – Richard Wykes; Secretary – Lisa Duffy; Asst Secretary – Eoin O’Neill; Treasurers – Marion O’Melia and Bernadette Dermody. The meeting discussed the building of the new community hall and the facilities that will be available in the near future.

The Dundalk U15 Squad competed in the prestigious Milk Cup tournament last week where they turned in fine performances against some of the top teams from all over the world. Unfortunately the Dundalk lads were drawn in a very tough group and although they didn’t come home with any silverware, they can be proud of their efforts. The local side were unlucky to lose out to Armagh in the opening game on a 2-1 scoreline, before taking on favourites and eventual champions, Everton, in the second game. The Toffees were made to work all the way by Dundalk and didn’t open the scoring until first half injury-time before going on to win 3-0. In the final group game, Dundalk came from two behind to draw with Swindon Town. The team was unlucky to lose out to Fermanagh 4-3 on penalties in the

Luke Martin, a campaigner for parental rights, believes that the current system is outdated and in an effort to create a fairer approach for all parties, he is organising a petition to force the Government to take notice. Mr Martin reveals that he was prompted to take this step due to a combination of his role with Parental Equality and his own personal experiences, and he feels that the system needs to be fairer, cost effective and more transparent. “I am calling for a

public inquiry into the Family Law system as it is totally outdated and we need to look at a process like the one they have in the North which seems to work well”, explained Luke whose role in Parental Equality means that he represents the rights of both men and women as well as grandparents. While it is a complicated process, Luke has outlined some of the

main issues that he feels should be addressed. “One of the big things is that there is a fourmonth waiting list for legal aid which is too long because in that time a person could be denied access to their children. “Maintenance is a big issue and in certain cases people simply can’t afford the payments. There is no doubt that maintenance has to be paid but it must be at a reasonable rate. In this regard, I believe that a Maintenance Board should be set up. “Mediation should be compulsory before going to court and that shared parenting on an equal basis should be promoted”, he explained. As a result of these and other related issues Luke felt compelled to

take action and he hopes there will be a response at Government level. “The petition will be available for people to sign within the next two weeks at our office in 15A Clanbrassil St, Dundalk. We are looking for 3,000-5,000 signatures but would be delighted if we got more. “If we had that volume from one town it would send out a strong message and we could even look to organise petitions in other areas. “This is not a purely personal opinion but it comes from what many people are telling me about their own situations. An anti- eviction protest is planned for Dundalk Town Centre this coming August 16 at 4pm it has been announced following the introduction of legislation that paves the way for more repossessions of homes by banks. The event is being organised by ‘Dundalk Says No’ and the group say they want to lessen the impact of debt and recent repossessions such as homelessness, increasing suicide rates and emigration and aim to change the trends through resistance.

Fun day fundraiser tribute to Siobhain Family and friends of a young Dundalk woman who passed away just two weeks after her 21st birthday gathered over the Bank Holiday Weekend to honour her memory and raise funds for charity. Siobhain Stewart, from Muirhevnamor, passed away in July 2011, just eight months after being diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease. Since then her parents, Peter and Patricia, along with sisters, Nicola and Catriona, have organised a number of event to raise both money and awareness. The latest event was a walk and fun day on Sunday August 4 with the walk starting and finishing in Oriel Park before the children were entertained by an afternoon of fun activities. According to Siobhain’s father, Peter, it proved to be a huge success and he is grateful to all who supported the venture in a week when Motor Neurone Disease was again in the head-

O P P O RT U N I S T I C thieves targeted the Carlingford and Greenore area on Sunday as residents were attending the annual Blessing of the Graves at St Michael’s Cemetery Carlingford. Gardaí received reports of s spate of burglaries during the ceremony and believe that the thieves are not from the area but travelled from elsewhere in the knowledge that a number of homes would be empty as families attended the event. Gardai are advising that when events like this are taking place, people should consider leaving someone to mind the property and keep an eye on the area. Speaking about the string of burglaries at the weekend, a Garda representative ap-

pealed for vigilance. “If you are vacating your home for these type of public events, just leave someone in charge,” he said. Cllr Jim Loughran echoed the Gardai’s advice and urged people to be extra vigilant when there are events on which many in the community attend. “I’ve heard about the spate of burglaries around Carlingford and Greenore as people attended the Blessings of the Graves and unfortunately this is happening all too often nowadays. “I’ve heard the same reports from Faughart and Kilcurry recently as well.”, explained the Sinn Fein councillor. “I would urge people to try and have at least one person in their neighbourhood staying at home to report any strange activities to their local Garda station” he added.

Cllr Loughran has been a long time advocate for a text based community alert system to deter burglaries and he is hopeful that this idea will soon be implemented by Gardaí and local community groups. “Evidence shows in areas where such systems have been piloted there has been a significant drop in burglaries and public order offences. Text alerts can be used by the Gardai to alert communities of suspicious activity in their area and also by the community to alert the Gardai of suspicious activity. “Text alerts already exist on an ad hoc basis in some areas, particularly border areas. A more co-ordinated system would be a significant tool in cutting crime.” explained the Ravensdale based councillor.

New 5K run promises athletes double the fun LOCAL runners, joggers and walkers have the chance to put the ‘Fun’ back into fun running with a new take on the popular road running craze. The ‘Double the Fun 5K Run’ on Saturday September 7 around Lordship Village is encouraging participants to run in pairs. Any combination is welcome, such as husband/wife, boyfriend/ girlfriend, brother/ sister, parent/child, friends – basically whatever you decide. This provides a great opportunity for experienced runners

to help guide a novice through a 5k run, perhaps for the first time, but those who wish to run as individuals are welcome to do so. The event is being organised by St Patricks GFC and Ravensdale Sports Field committee to raise funds for juvenile sport in the area. It will take place on Saturday September 7 commencing at Noon from St Patricks GFC complex in Lordship. The course will see participants take on a flat course past Fitzpatrick’s restaurant and back to the St

Disqualified from driving for ten years A MAN who is currently serving a five-year sentence in Wheatfield prison was given a five month sentence and disqualified from driving for ten years after pleading guilty to driving without insurance at Dundalk District Court. Michael Regan

with an address at 44 Montpellier Gardens, Infirmary Road, Dublin, was stopped by Gardai at Apple Green, Castlebellingham, on March 30 this year. He pleaded guilty to a charge of driving while disqualified, driving with no insurance and failing to pro-

duce insurance. The 21-year-old defendant, who has 92 previous convictions is currently serving a sentence and due for release on August 15, 2016. The court was told that Mr Regan has had difficulty with tablets in the past but since

entering prison he has been putting his time to good use by attending school and workshops. In convicting the defendant on the no insurance charge, Judge Cormac D Dunne convicted on the other matters and took them into account.

The provincial Fleadh was held in Edenderry, Co. Offaly this year and a delighted branch chairman, Austin Dawe said it was the most successful Leinster Fleadh for the local branch in many years. “We had competitors in the top three positions in 17 competitions achieving eight first places, three second places and six third places. We even had a first and second in one of the event. With first and second placed competitors qualifying to compete at All Ireland level it means that Craobh Dhún Dealgan will be represented in 11 competitions when Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann is staged in Derry in mid August”, explained Austin. “This success is due in no small way to the

Struck off-duty Garda D while trying to park a A man who was attempting to park outside a shop struck an off duty Garda who was in the process of crossing the road, causing him soft tissue injuries. As a result, Neil Waters of 9 Rathmount, Seafield Road, was convicted of a hit and run offence after failing to remain at the scene of the incident which occurred at Quay St on May 4, 2012. The court heard from Emmet Ryan that he was crossing the road to meet a friend. He was near the centre line when he heard a car reversing at speed and felt an impact on his right side. “The driver stopped and put down his window. I told him he had hit me and he said ‘what are you doing crossing unexpectedly?’. I asked him to hold on but he drove off in the direction of town. I got his registration and reported it to Gardai”, stated Mr Ryan who added that Mr Waters did not enquire if he was all right. In his evidence, Mr Waters stated that he did not reverse at speed but as he was half way through the parking manoeuver he felt a slap on the back of his car. He stopped and asked the man if he was ok before driving to a shop 200 yards away. “The conversation lasted about 30 seconds and I asked him a couple of times if he was ok”, stated the defendant who added that Mr Ryan looked ‘a bit shook’ but not injured. In convicting Mr Waters, Judge Cormac D Dunne stated that the statement of a witness which was handed into court supported the evidence of Mr Ryan. “There is a significant irresponsibility on Mr Waters’ part to leave the scene after 30 seconds and it appears that he was indifferent in waiting only 30 seconds. He didn’t give enough time to a fellow citizen to give details”, added the judge who imposed a €150 fine.

Dispute over wall led to verbal altercation between neighbours

A dispute over a wall between neighbours led to a man driving his car in the direction of three people and becoming involved in a verbal altercation. As a result, Konstantiu Scigelskij of 198 Glenwood, Dundalk, appeared at Dundalk District Court where he pleaded guilty to a charge of threatening and abusive behaviour and to careless driving. The court heard that on July 18 last year in the Glenwood area, the defendant drove at speed towards three people and causing them a fright before stopping. This was followed by an altercation that involved shouting and abusive behaviour. Solicitor, Michelle Murphy, stated that her client did not think he was driving in a threat-

ening manner, and that he had stopped outside a house. She added that there was anger on both sides, but no violence. Ms Murphy added that he had made peace with the individuals afterwards and thought this was the end of the matter. After hearing that the defendant, who is married with one child, had a previous conviction for having no insurance and drink driving, Judge Cormac D Dunne stated “this man had contempt for the rules of the road”. “He has no respect for public safety with that record and he is the one person who should be most careful as he has a previous conviction for no insurance and drink driving. “He was detected drink driving (on December 16, 2006) and

less than two months later he is detected for having no insurance”, stated the judge. Ms Murphy pointed out that those offences were over five years old and hoped that it wouldn’t aggravate the current case. However, Judge Dunne was not impressed and added: “He was disqualified for one year and two years previously. You don’t need to be a lawyer to see that this man has contempt for the rules of the road. I have to take into account the public interest of the people of Dundalk as well as the interests of the accused”, he added before adjourning the case to the following day when he imposed a €750 fine for careless driving.

"We all love the sunshine, when we get it, and typically in Ireland it’s not often the case during the summer months, but we still do get the odd ‘heatwave’. At the moment temperatures are in the mid twenties and it’s worth noting that hot weather brings extra responsibilities if you have a dog. It’s important to be aware of the dangers that can be caused by leaving a dog unattended in a vehicle when it’s sweltering out. If you plan on driving anywhere with a dog, make sure that you do not leave them in a vehicle for any length of time or you risk your dog getting heat stroke and potentially dying. While you might be thinking it will never happen to your dog, you must still be cautious. Carmel Murray, Public Relations Officer for the ISPCA says, “heat stroke could only take ten minutes if your pet is left in your car on a hot day. Take precautions and don’t let it happen to your pet!” Heat stroke, also known as hyperthermia, means that body temperatures reach an abnormal high and can result in damaging effects and often

lead to death. The length of time this takes varies between animals and humans. Obviously the hotter it would be the shorter the length of time it takes for the effects to occur. You may think leaving the car window open will alleviate the risk of heat stroke, but under intense sun this won’t entirely prevent it from happening. If you do want to bring your dog or pet on a journey it’s important to have a source of cool air from the windows/sunroof or air conditioning. Also be sure that the destination is dog friendly and has a cool area with plenty of shade. A constant supply of cold drinking water is advisable and try stop regularly to give your pet water breaks. “Planning is key, ensuring you don’t have to stop where dogs are left in extreme heat”, says Carmel. So if you need take the dog in your vehicle during the hot weather, make sure you take them with you when you get out."
