THE people of Dundalk have achieved their aim of making it into the Guinness Book of World Records thanks to almost 5,000 Santa’s taking part in last Friday evenings fun run. More significant is the fact that the Santas delivered the perfect Christmas present in the form of approximately €100,000 for local charities. The initially surreal sight of gangs of Santa’s jumping out of cars soon became the norm as it appeared that almost the whole town had come out to support the Dundalk Chamber’s Santa Fun Fun which aimed to raise much needed funds for charities around Louth. The chamber had asked for over 4000 people to support

the venture in order to try and make it into the Guinness Book of World Records and according to organiser Jimmy Cumiskey they have surpassed that figure with plenty

to spare. “We were absolutely blown away by the response we received from people for our Santa Run. 4961 tags have officially been counted and we

are confident that we have fulfilled all the criteria to make it into the Guinness Book of Records. I can honestly say I have never seen so Continued on Page 6

Mr Crawley added that money, a mobile phone and a watch were missing from his pockets, while thousands of euro worth of damage had been done to the inside of his house. He added that he had no history with Mandy Perkins but she had made allegations against him a number of years ago. He denied having a hammer or striking Ms Perkins on the day in question. He denied climbing a wall into Liam Crawley’s property and entering his house, causing damage. The investigating Garda stated that when he attended, there had been damage to the house while there was no evidence that there was a hammer at the scene. He also stated that a forensic examination of the house yielded no evidence. The Garda added that a juvenile witness had told Mr Crawley that he saw the men climbing over the wall, but he was not allowed to give evidence by his parents. In reply to a question from Insp Martin Beggy Mr Davidson agreed that despite being a Thai Boxing instructor with certain ‘abilities’ he was unable to wrestle a hammer from a 62-year-old man. All places at new school snapped up Applicants to the new Coláiste Chú Chulainn postprimary school in Dundalk were recently notified by the Patron Body, Louth and Meath Education and Training Board (LMETB) of their success in securing a place in the first year group due to start in September 2014. The school is now closed for applications for the 2014/15 school year and late applications are being placed on a waiting list should any places become

available. There will be four first year classes commencing in the school in 2014 including two classes within Coláiste Lú, the school’s Irish unit who will engage in post-primary education through the medium of Irish right up to Leaving Certificate level. Commenting on the situation Shivaun O’Brien, Education Development Officer for LMETB stated that “it was obvious from our information evening back in May this year that there would

be a strong interest in the new school. The room was packed to capacity that night and there was a queue of parents outside our office the following morning with completed application forms.” While students will be based in temporary accommodation at Chapel Street for the first year it is expected that they will move into their brand new, state of the art, 1,000 place school at the Marshes, Dundalk at the start of the 2015/16 school year.

Funding for youth project By Niamh Kirk

CHILDREN in Louth are to benefit from a €1.5m Government investment as Dundalk and Drogheda have been selected to progress through the Area Based Childhood Programme (ABC). A consortium of 60 local agencies, organisations and schools called St. Joseph’s NS Principal, Marcella Ó Conluain and Benny McArdle, HSCL with some of the the Genesis Programme formed in April in order students welcome The Genesis Programme

to take part in ABC which was announced by the Department of Children and Youth Affairs. Last week it became one of eight programmes nationally to receive the government funding. The Genesis Programme will deliver the Incredible years programme to children, families and communities in area of ‘entrenched disadvantage’ in Dundalk. It will build on the work already done in the eight primary schools in the town.

The Incredible Years operations in Dundalk are well established and much celebrated for their successes over the past four years. Set up in 2009/10 the programme has led teacher training programmes, parenting courses and more and the group say they are very proud of their successes. sThe programme, which originated in the University of Washington, helps children up to six years of age develop socially, emotionally, and cognitively. It aims

to prevent and treat emotional and behavioural problems by educating the three people involved, the child, their parents and their teachers. In Dundalk these take the form of the, the Dina Programme, Teacher Classroom Management programme and the Parent programme. One of the cornerstones of the programme’s success is the interagency approach to a child’s development, the pooling of resources allows each of the different agencies have more

It was a wonderful occasion and most importantly we have raised a lot of money for local charities which I believe will top €100,000 by the time we count it all up”, he added. Jimmy and the rest of the committee in the Dundalk Chamber will now submit their numbers into the

Guinness Book of World Records with all members believing that all the criteria for the record have been achieved. The money raised will go to SOSAD, Men’s Shed, North Louth Hospice, SNAP and Lordship Children’s Respite Centre as well as many more worthy causes around the county. The Santas set off at around 6:45 on Friday evening, and made their way around the town from the Millennium Building finishing at the Demesne. The event was started by Redemptorist priest Fr Cusack who described the evening as ‘a wonderful night in the town’s history’.

Cyclist caused danger to footballers

A man who rode a bicycle across a green area where children were playing football and then the wrong way down a busy road pleaded guilty to a charge of dangerous driving of a pedal cycle. Patrick McGuinness of 59 Aghameen Park, Muirhevnamor, also pleaded guilty to a series of thefts, including one on the morning of his appearance in Dundalk District Court on Wednesday last. Insp Martin Beggy told the court that on June 4 this year, the defendant was observed by

Gardai cycling through a green area and across the road on and on to Tom Bellew Ave. He then drove on the wrong side of the road forcing cars to take evasive action. He also admitted stealing whiskey from Dunnes Stores in the Marshes on June 11, 2011, and vodka from Lidl, St Helena, on October 15, 2010. On November 3, he stole beer and chocolate from the same outlet. He also admitted taking seven Nintendo games from Zavvi in the Marshes, while on November 27 this year he admit-

ted taking a bottle of Jameson from Tesco. The court heard that Mr McGuinness had previously been given suspended sentences for assault. Solicitor, James MacGuill, stated that his 34-year-old client had never been in prison. He had been down on his luck and in the Simon Community from time to time, but he was anxious to get help to aid his recovery. Judge William Hamill adjourned the case to February 19 for a Probation Report.

There was great excitement in Castletown Girls School on Monday morning as a group of Dundalk Fire Fighters dropped by for an educational and fun morning with Junior and Senior Infant children. The visit was organised by Yvonne Gallagher, Home School Liaison Officer, in Castletown Girl’s School and was designed to be fun as well as educational for the young children. “Part of the curriculum for the junior and senior infants is to learn about people who help us in the community and get to know more about them. The fire officers kindly agreed to come down to us this morning and they have been talking to the girls about fire safety and letting the children use the hose and climb aboard the fire engine. They seem to be enjoying it and hopefully they can learn a bit about the importance of fire safety in the process” ,explains Yvonne. Michael Donnelly, a station officer, in Dundalk Fire Station said the idea of the exercise was to educate the children in a

fun way as well as getting the teachers involved. “We are here today as part of the fire safety project which is co-ordinated by Sheila Broderick as part of our involvement in the local community. There is a

national school programme for third class schoolchildren which emphasises the importance of fire safety and this is just an addition to that where we visit younger kids and show them what we do”, he explained.

Local actors hit the big screen Continued from Page 1 To do justice to the cinematic sweep of the project it soon became clear that a professional cinematographer with world class equipment would be required. Local film maker James Mullholand got involved at a fairly early stage – bringing his experience behind the lens and his

magical way with lights – a hallmark style that can be seen in every frame of the finished movie. The project was tightly organised by Director Sandy Sneddon and a fantastic production team of staff and volunteers from RehabCare Dundalk. The sense of team work – of excitement and pride and of overcoming the daily

challenges that arose on the long journey to the film’s final frames have been captured by documentary film maker Cara Holmes from Blackrock. Many local groups and organisations helped these dreams come true and all at RehabCare are grateful to everyone who made a contribution to the project. An award ceremony for cast

and crew and invited guests will take place at the Crown Plaza Hotel on the night of the premiere. Although the screening is totally sold out it is hoped to arrange further screenings for anyone who missed out. In the meantime DVDs of the movie are available from RehabCare Resource Centre, Carroll Village Dundalk priced €10.

A man who tried to rob a service station using garden shears left the premises empty-handed before calling the Gardai himself. Sean Carroll of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to a charge of attempted robbery at Greenmount Service Station, Mullens Cross, Castlebellingham on November 21, 2013. Barrister, Irene Sands, stated that her client needed the money as a person involved in the drugs

trade thought he was owned money by Carroll and he felt under pressure to get it. The court heard that the 19-year-old defendant entered the premises, put the garden shears on the counter and asked staff member, ‘what are you going to do now?’ He then told the assistant to put their phone on the counter and when they refused, he ran out. The winners of the Large School section were St Marys, Knockbridge, with runners-up St Peters, Dromiskin. In the Small School section, Bellurgan NS were the winners, ahead of Mullaghbuoy NS. Ardee St. Marys GFC are holding a ‘Gathering Evening’ on December 14 in their clubrooms at 7.30pm as part of the 85th birthday celebrations. All who have been members of the club, or associated in any way, are invited to come along to what promises to be a special night. The event will coincide with the launch of the eagerly awaited DVD compiled by Brendan Matthews reflecting on many of the great achievements within the club and county. The DVD features interviews with Louth legends and St Marys

greats, including the likes of Patsy Coleman, Kevin Beahan, Dan O’Neill, Jackie Reynolds and many, many more. It also contains rare footage of the 1950 and 1957 All-Ireland Football finals. Brendan has spent many months putting the DVD together and he hopes that people in Louth will enjoy it. “On one of my frequent visits to Patsy Coleman I decided to make a DVD.recording of one his reminiscing episodes, recalling memories of his football career. Having completed an interview,

I thought why not the same with the other surviving St.Mary’s Greats. Also remembering those who have passed away and while meeting the St.Mary’s greats I was also talking to members of Louth 1957 All Ireland winning team memories of which they were sharing with me. “I hope that in viewing this DVD it brings back many happy memories to many GAA fans and that for others it generates an awareness and appreciation of the men and their achievements in those golden years”, added Brendan.

Dundalk Darts League is the talk of the town It really is evident that the TUBORG Dundalk & District Darts League is having an impact on the town when you walk through Earl Street late on a Thursday night and you come across various players having conversations about “Missed doubles cost us tonight” or “He hit 180 at a perfect time”. Like any football manager watching his new signings settle into his team, the team captains in the league are starting to find their best teams for their assault on the top position in their respective divisions.

In the Premier Division, the Avenue Eagles hosted Commercial 1896 and the first game of the night saw Daniel Dunn take on Brian Fitzpatrick and the tension was very evident from the first dart and despite Dunn winning 2-0 he was not as clinical on the finishing as he usually is and Fitzpatrick was left to rue his chances and missed doubles. This game went right to the last game where Ray O’Brien won against Alan Reenan to give the visitors a valuable draw. In the First Division, Kehoe’s Bar played the di-

visional table toppers this week and any luck they did have soon ran out. The “Green Machine” from the Stags Head was in full flight when they travelled down to the Quayside venue. This first division tie saw the visiting team soon push into a 3-0 lead and despite Peter Kerr narrowly losing his game, it was for Gavin Branigan to try start a comeback. This game against Darren Kerley proved to be game of the night but it was Darren who made sure he delivered the win and took both points home for the Stags team.

In the Second Division the top of the table clash between Castlebar Knights and The Stags White. Bob Morgan and

Paddy Shields ensured the knights took an early 2-0 lead. Brian McArdle’s win against Chris McMahon

Green Party select candidates

THE Louth Green Party has selected sitting councillors Marianne Butler and Mark Dearey as their candidates for next year’s local elections. The party met last Wednesday to decide nominations for Page the two Dundalk electoral areas. Both Dearey and Butler are well established and experienced local representatives.
Now living in Corrakit near Omeath and with a business in Dundalk, Dearey is well placed to serve the needs of the Dundalk Carlingford Electoral area. He is a former County Councillor, member of Seanad Eireann and is currently serving on Dundalk Town Council. He has a long track record of support for environmental protection and sustainable economic development and is an active participant in the debate on future energy supplies.

Speaking to Green Party members he said he was delighted to accept the nomination.
“As a businessman, I understand the impact that local government can have on our ability to invest and create jobs. As well as employing ten people in my business, I have worked hard to promote a sustainable proenterprise approach by the Town Council and see the role of the new County Council as critical in the area renewing the local economies of our towns and vil-

21

lages in North Louth. I’m really concerned that this focus will be lost. “At the next local elections the Dundalk/Carlingford area must elect county councillors who don’t just care about job creation, but actually do it and understand it”, he continued.
A former bank-official, Cllr. Marianne Butler has been a fulltime public representative since she was first elected in 2009. Originally from Quay Street, she now lives on the Avenue Road, and recently gave birth to her first child. Butler will be contesting the Dundalk South electoral area.

In her address to the convention she outlined her priorities. ‘Throughout Dundalk South, from Blackrock to Knockbridge there are pockets of profound social and economic disadvantage. I’ve worked a lot with the educational sector over the last four years, as a member of the Governing Body of DKIT, through the boards of management for several local schools, and I’ve seen the powerful impact of education and training in attracting major employers such as PayPal to Dundalk. “It is essential that our local representatives fight to protect the quality of our educational facilities if Dundalk is to have a long-term economic future”, she added.

Possible solutions to Chapel St traffic Diversity conference problems raised by Town Council LOUTH Ethnic Minority Consortium (LMEC) will host a European Union Peace III supported conference on December 5 to review its findings from the recent Integration of Target Communities (ITC) Project and highlight the need for an Integration Strategy and Practice for County Louth. From the current population census, it is noticed that there is increase in the number of ethnic minorities in County Louth, which includes the Traveller community. The percentage of people with African background living in County Louth (21.57%)

is significantly higher than the nationwide percentage of this group (10.8%), which suggest that County Louth host more people with African Background. Sinn Féin President, Gerry Adams, Fianna Fáil’s Éamon Ó Cuív, as well as many others with a great deal of experience of these issues, will lend voice to the conference, which will take place in the CrownE Plaza Hotel, Dundalk, Co. Louth on 5th December, 9.30am to 3.30pm. For further information or to register your attendance please contact: Tosin Omiyale: 0870996789, tinu@lmec.ie.

THE ongoing issues with traffic congestion on Chapel St was raised again at last Tuesdays monthly Dundalk Town Council Meeting with senior engineer Peter McVeigh presenting a report outlining possible solutions for the problem. Chapel St, a narrow two way, primarily residential street was recently fitted with a cycle track along its southern end which provides a separated contra-flow

cycleway for cyclists along the current one way section of Chapel St thus providing a secure link to the cycleways on Jocelyn St. There have been a number of complaints to the council that this cycle track has caused a number of difficulties for both residents and businesses and it was agreed by council officials to look at ways to improve the street and look at ways to address traffic issues in the area. During his report, Peter McVeigh noted that

SANTA is coming to a special grotto at Buíon Setanta Scout Den on Sunday December 15. On the day the children can visit with Santa, receive a gift and take part in some art and crafts all for only €10. The group will also have a coffee shop where the parents can enjoy some tea, coffee

and home baked goods. The event is being run as a fundraiser for the group’s “Garden Project” which is to transform the “garden” at the Den into a place where our Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Ventures can camp, practice their camp craft and pioneering projects and even enjoy a good old campfire.

substantial work had already been done in trying to resolve issues between Jocelyn St to Union St and that a solution would now try to be found for Chapel St. “If traffic management in Chapel St is to be safely altered for the benefit of residents, businesses, cyclists and pedestrians alike, then consideration should be given to a ‘No Entry for Northbound traffic from Union St except for Emergency vehicles’. “This measure we feel will reduce the attractiveness

Santa to make special visit to local scout group

On the day the group will also be holding a food appeal for St. Vincent de Paul. The Scout Den is at Lennon and Melia Terrace and the grotto will be open from 10am to 6pm. Further details from www.facebook. com/pages/Santa-Dayat-Buíon-Setanta-ScoutDen/256337844542105.

of Chapel St as a through route which should reduce Northbound traffic on the whole length of the road. It should also reduce northbound traffic at Wrightsons Lane bottleneck on the side where traffic currently mounts the footpath”, he explained. Town Clerk Frank Pentony was keen to point out that this report was only a presentation to give councillors a heads up as to what the council planned to bring to public consultation. Speaking after the report

was presented Sinn Fein Cllr Jennifer Green urged the town council to engage with local residents, businesses and schools in the area and make sure they were involved in any proposed changes that may take place. Cllr Maria Doyle noted that the Park and Stride initiative needed to be utilised more to alleviate traffic congestion while also pointing out that many of the flexi bollards in Chapel St have been missing for quite some time.
