TWO arson attacks in recent weeks have sparked fears that “someone who likes matches’ could end up causing serious injury if the habit continues. Following the incidents in Castlebellingham, local councillor, Pearse McGeough, has raised concerns that someone in the area is a ‘Firebug’ and putting people in danger. The first incident saw a number of bales of hay in storage being set on fire, causing considerable damage and financial loss, and act which was branded a disgrace. “There is a huge amount of work involved in them, and for some clown to come along and torch them is disgraceful,” said Cllr Mc-
Geough. Not long after, a vacant business premises in Castlebellngham burnt down sparking concerns that “someone likes matches”. A number of vacant houses that still contained some personal property have also been broken into in the area causing much upset, explained the County Councillor. “My main concern is that some day these undesirables will set fire to something and it will take off. When you strike that match you have no control, anything could happen. People could be seriously injured or worse,” said Mr McGeough. “I would like to encourage anyone with any information that can assist Gardai in their investigation to come forward”, said Cllr McGeough.

Dundalk traders set to review BIDS plans By Niamh Kirk
Dundalk rate payers still have time to review plans for the Dundalk Businesses Invest-
ment District Scheme (BIDS) which is proposing a five-year-long programme. The vote on whether rate payers want to support BIDS
will take place on November 1. For just over four years Dundalk BIDS has been working to improve retail in Dundalk and now rate payers are being asked to judge how successful it has been and whether it is worth continuing and making improvement or scrapping it altogether. If approved, the scheme will see rate payers pay an additional 1.5% on top of their current rates for the next five years. The BIDS scheme proposal is available online and
some detailed information is available from a stand in the Marshes Shopping Centre. The proposal acknowledges the challenges it has and will continue to face. It says the challenge for its rates-payers remains on how it might transform and build a diverse retail environment, improve its leisure offerings and attract the investors that have by-passed it for decades. The directors of the company includes Paddy Malone, Chartered accountant, Brian O’Neill from RQ O’Neill and Harry Traynor from the Marshes Shopping Centre. The Management Committee will include
councillors, council officials, Harry Traynor of the Marshes, Siobhan Mc Tigue from the Crown Plaza. One of the proposals is the continuation of the Town Centre Commercial Managers Position. The TCCM resource will be charged with addressing gaps, bringing new investment options, organising events and activities, marketing and promotion. An events calendar will also be put together that will aim to include high profile events to give Dundalk a higher public profile and revived historical festivals. The proposal also says that BIDS will be
committed to undertaking performance reviews every six months the results of which will be disseminated through the local papers. “Local authorities, landlords, retailers and the public working together to really animate the spaces they occupy, creating and nurturing their own unique place. Local people as cocreators and not simply consumers, Councils as managers and enablers, Landlords as long-term investors, Businesses as stakeholders, the best returns on investment will come from maximum collaboration based on local partnerships”, said Brian O’Neill the chairman of BIDS.

Bogus collection warning Redeemer Football Club secretary Stephen Fisher has warned members of the public about bogus fundraising collectors operating around town falsely claiming to represent the club. There have been a number of reports of young children being sent into pubs by their parents with fundraising cards asking for money to help support the club. According to Stephen these people have absolutely no connection with Redeemer FC. “We have no idea who these people are but what we do know is that they have absolutely nothing to do with us. We would advise members of the public that we would never send children into pubs asking them to collect money for us. We are a local team and we don’t go outside our estate when fundraising. “We have got a number of calls over the last few days telling us
that children have been going into various pubs around town as well as out as far as Louth Village in an attempt to raise money using our name” he explained. “We have already contacted the local community guard and we want to make it clear that we have absolutely zero fundraising cards around town at the mo-
ment. If somebody asks for money claiming to be from our club I’d advise them to give myself or Barry Gray a ring” added Stephen. If anybody is approached with regards to people fundraising for Redeemer FC and are suspicious of the seller they can contact Stephen or Barry on 0864664934

Bit the hand that was feeding her A 35-year-old woman was described as having bitten the hand that was feeding her after she stole National Lottery tickets from a shop where she was an employee. Carol Mullen of Balriggan, Kilcurry, pleaded guilty to theft of the tickets valued at €119, an act her solicitor described as opportunist and stupid. Insp Martin Beggy told the court that the owner of Londis on Castletown Road, Dundalk, was having difficulty in relation to lottery money and following enquiries discovered

that the defendant had stolen tickets on April 4, 2012. He added that there had been a number of issues in relation to how much went missing but Carol Mullen had agreed to repay the money. She had been taking the tickets without permission and scratching them. They were found in a bin on a day when no other employee was working. Insp Beggy added that there was a suggestion that the tickets were purchased at another location, but the National Lottery was able to
identify where they had been activated. Solicitor, Peter Lavery, stated that his client, who had no previous convictions, had lost her job as a result of the offence. She was very worried but accepted her wrongdoing. He added that she was from a good family and had led a good life up to this point. Judge Halpin pointed out that she had been stealing from the hand that fed her and that was pretty mean, while asking why she had done it. Mr Lavery explained that
she had no real reason but that the action was stupid and opportunist. He asked the judge to give her a chance and not record a conviction as she had a brother in Boston whom she hoped to visit from time to time. “Because she was an employee of the shop I have to take this matter seriously. She yielded to a temptation that she should have resisted”, explained Judge Halpin as he decided not to record a conviction but ordered the defendant to enter into a Peace Bond of €500 for six months.

Halloween bonfire warning By Paul Byrne
Louth County Council Fire & Rescue has issued an appeal in the run up to Halloween urging members of the public not to supply any waste material to persons who do not hold a valid waste collection permit. Louth Fire & Rescue Services incur substantial costs at Halloween in responding to bonfire related incidents, as well as cleaning up after bonfires that take place. The uncontrolled burning of waste, particularly in bonfires, is illegal under the Air Pollution Act, 1987, and The Waste Management Acts, 1996-2011. The burning of waste also releases toxic pollutants into the air which are known to be damaging to public health and the environment. “Bonfires are an illegal, dangerous and costly tradition,” ex-
plained Eamon Woulfe, Louth Chief Fire Officer. He added: “Bonfires are often built close to houses and other property presenting risks to personal safety and property. Halloween is one the busiest times of the year for the fire services and responding to bonfire call outs puts a strain on existing resources. I would like people to be aware of the fire safety hazards that arise from illegal bonfires, where the burning of highly combustible materials may lead to serious injuries or death.” The Fire Service is advising members of public not to buy, use or supply fireworks. A firework includes all those devices which burn and explode to give a loud noise and a visual effect – basically a typical, traditional firework. Bangers are also defined as fireworks.
It is illegal to possess any fireworks that may have been legally purchased outside Ireland and brought back into this country. Many of the fireworks that are offered for sale illegally here have not passed any quality control tests and are possibly defective. Gardaí will confiscate any fireworks found in the possession of people who in turn will be liable to prosecution. In addition there is a specific offence under law for throwing any lit firework at a person or property. A person can be fined up to €10,000 for possession of unlicensed fireworks and for igniting, throwing, or possession of unlicensed fireworks with intent to sell or supply, the penalties can be up to €10,000 and five years in jail. The only exception to these laws is where a professional fireworks display is authorised under licence.

Hillview residents wait on final piece of jigsaw M By Paul Byrne
Members of the O’Hanlon Park Resident’s committee have called on Dundalk Town Council to complete the ‘final piece of the jigsaw’ with regards to building a wall to close off an alleyway between Hillview and Culhane Estate. Back in 2009 local residents and the council agreed to share the costs of erecting a number of gates to block entrances to alleyways surrounding the Hillview estate. The cost of erecting the seven gates amounted to almost €9000 with the council
agreeing to pay €4000 while the local residents paid the remaining balance. Anthony Taaffe, chairman of the O’Hanlon Park Residents Association said that during talks with the council they agreed to erect a wall on both sides of the alleyway which connects Hillview Estate to Culhane Estate. While all the gates have been erected the residents are still waiting on the council to put up the walls. “We were grateful for the council for listening to our original concerns back in 2009 and giving us €4000 towards the costs of the gates
Junction 18 kickboxers were in impressive form
but we have been waiting over a year now for the final piece of the jigsaw to be put in place and we would very much like a resolution to this matter”, explained Anthony. “The gates have done a great job in stopping people dumping rubbish, drinking alcohol and taking drugs down the alleyways which surround this estate. However there is still one alleyway open and it is being used by people who are not from the area and it is very difficult to keep the estate clean when people are congregating here at night.” he added.
“We were promised by the council that we would build a wall between Hillview and Culhane estates and we have waited patiently for over a year now but there doesn’t seem to be any progress at all. Hopefully we will get some word soon telling us that work will commence soon. “The people around this area have worked really hard in cleaning up the area. We collected money from all the residents on a weekly basis to get money for the gates and all we are asking is for the council to keep their end of the deal”, urged Anthony.
Stephen Cull from Dundalk Town Council said thatD the process is still ongoingm and hopes that the issue canC be resolved ‘sooner ratherw than later’. b “I know that this issue has z been going on for over a year now and we are keen to havet it resolved sooner rathert than later. There is a processt currently ongoing which ist out of my hands and I havel asked for clarification as toM when a decision is to be made. I have been told that we will hear back from them very very soon and we can bring this issue to a close”, he explained.

Make a dream come true this Christmas Dundalk Chamber of Commerce is planning to host a Christmas Charity lunch which will take place on Friday December 13 at 1pm in the Crowne Plaza Hotel Dundalk. The theme of the lunch is for Local businesses to re-connect with the community. This will be our second year to host this event and last years lunch attracted over 200 guests. Money raised from last year’s
lunch was donated to three main charities and also gave one deserving child a free trip to Euro Disney worth 2000. Travis Foley from the Redeemer School was selected last year and had a fantastic time. All those attending the lunch this year are being asked to take an unwrapped toy with them to create a toy mountain at the event and these new toys will
be collected and donated to St. Brigid’s School and other local charities. During the event, the organisers are also planning to make a special award to one child and
their family, for whom a Special Award case has been made in relation to their battle with a particular challenge, physical or otherwise. This will be in the form of a €2000 voucher for a trip to Euro Disney for a family of 4 (2 adults, 2 children) and is always with the prior knowledge and consent of the parents, but as a surprise for the child.
If you know a child who may be worthy of such an opportunity, please send a short precise letter (approx. 150 words) to the Treasurer, Dundalk Chamber of Commerce, Unit 4, Partnership Court, Park St. Dundalk in support of the child/ family whom you would like to nominate. You can also email to Brenda@dundalk.ie. Closing date is Friday November 7.

Yes and no. It can be bad if some kids are wearing better clothes than others as it could lead to bullying. But the freedom of wearing your own clothes is good as well.
I’d be in the yes and no camp as well. It’s good to have a uniform to help represent the school which you come from but on the negative side they can be very uncomfortable in the warm weather.
Question: Do you think school uniforms are a good or a bad idea?

Pupils view off-shore DkIT’s STÓR initiative windfarm proposals By Niamh Kirk
The development of renewable energies industry in the north east has grabbed the attention of school children as schools attended to the second round of Information days held by First Flight Wind farm. First flight Wind is a
consortium proposing a large scale wind farm 8km off the Co Down/ North Louth Coast. If planning is granted the North East Coast of Ireland could soon become the most densely populated off shore area for wind energy. More than 250 students from ten primary and sec-
ondary schools visited the exhibition and talk on the Information Days. Members of the First Flight Wind Farm Project team were on hand to answer all their questions as students probed their technical knowledge wanting to know how to get into the turbines and more.
DkIT Library is proud to launch the STÓR institutional repository as part of Open Access Week 2013. STÓR gathers together the scholarly publications and research of DkIT staff, postgraduates and research centres, making the material freely available to read online. They are also celebrating STÓR’s inclusion in RIAN, the national higher education portal, which is the primary source for Irish Open Access research
publications. The launch will take place on Wednesday October 23 at 1pm in DkIT Library. Open Access Week runs from October 21 to 27. Open access (OA) is the free, immediate, permanent online access to the full text of research articles for anyone via the web. In October 2012 the Government launched its National Principles for Open Access Policy stating that: “Open Access adds value
to research, to the economy and to society. The outputs from publicly-funded research should be publicly available to researchers, but also to potential users in education, business, charitable and public sectors, and general public.” An effective way to make this research freely available is through authors depositing their work in digital archives, often called institutional repositories.

Dundalk Chamber launches major meet the buyer event
fter a very successful event earlier in the Summer, plans are well underway to recruit a further 180 small businesses to the next Meet the Buyer event which will take place in Monaghan on 27th November 2013. Organised by the Northern Ireland Chamber of Commerce, Dundalk Chamber of Commerce, Letterkenny Chamber of Commerce and assisted by COMET Councils in Northern Ireland, the Meet the Buyer events form part of the Gateways to Growth initiative. Gateways to Growth is a cross border initiative encouraging trade between companies from Northern Ireland and the border regions of the Republic of Ireland through skills development workshops and Meet the Buyer events. The project has been awarded funding from the European Union’s INTERREG IVA Programme, managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB). Businesses attending the Monaghan event will get an opportunity to make a pitch to a range of private sector buyers on the day. Buyers and sellers will be matched before the

event and everyone will get the opportunity to meet selected buyers from businesses across Northern Ireland and the border counties. They also get the opportunity to network with the other businesses attending so creating the possibility of potential new customers and business partnerships. The feedback from the first event in June was excellent with businesses getting real opportunities to tender for work. Melanie Fitzpatrick, Project Manager, Dundalk Chamber of Commerce said: “We have been working on recruiting buyers for the last two months and we are pleased with the range and quality of companies we have lined up.
There are some major private sector businesses that will be represented on the day all with business opportunities and all seeking to source new suppliers. The local businesses attending are being offered a unique opportunity to pitch to large businesses that were very keen to widen their supplier base. This programme is trying to encourage cross border trade so the opportunity to network with other SMEs from across Northern Ireland is huge and will allow the businesses to develop valuable business relationships well in to the future.” Buyers who will attend can be found in the news section on our website www.gateways-
togrowth.ie, but a sample includes: Bombardier, Fujitsu, Seagate, Greiner Packaging, Lagan Construction Group, Graham Asset Management, 4 Beauty Group, Tayto Group, Glanbia, IrishShopper.ie, Abbott Ireland, Anord Control Systems, FPM Accountants, ABB, TSM Control Systems, Grant Engineering, Marshes Shopping Centre, Prometric, Coca Cola Ireland, Eastern Electrical, McArdle Skeath and Matthews.ie. We have a growing manufacturing and R&D operation at our state of the art facility in Dungloe, meaning that cross border links are invaluable to our business. Taking part in the initiative provides an excellent opportunity to engage with a wide variety of suppliers and stakeholders both North and South." New rules on motor tax
Following the introduction of new rules around Motor taxation, Louth County Council has received 1,700 applications declaring a vehicle off the road and which are also confirmed by Gardaí. There were long queues in the Louth Motor Tax Office on the last day of the old rules that allowed drivers to retrospectively declare a vehicle off the road and not pay tax for the period if confirmed by Gardai. It was decided that the system was open to abuse and a rule change now means that drivers who are intending to take the car off the road for an extended period must now declare to the motor tax office in advance. Vehicles that are off the road and the declaration not confirmed by September 30 will be liable for all back tax that is unpaid.

A night of fun, craic and renewing old acquaintances is promised at the O’Hanlon Park reunion night which will take place on Saturday 9th of November at 8:30 in the Lisdoo on the Newry Road. The reunion coincides with the 80th anniversary of the formation of O’Hanlon Park which was officially opened in 1933 as part of the councils plans for the elimination of slums in the area. 43 houses were demolished with the displaced people re-housed in an estate which would be named ‘O’Hanlon
Park by it’s new residents. Anthony Taaffe who is helping to organise the re-union has called on residents old and new to join in with the celebrations which are sure to stir up some memories and stories of O’Hanlon Park’s many characters over the years. “The O’Hanlon Park Reunion will take place on the 9th of November and will include a four course meal music and plenty of craic” promises Anthony. “We will also be launching a 16 page booklet about O’Hanlon Park which I am currently putting together which will be a

Taxi driver was trying to defend property The arrival of Gardai at the scene of an incident in Dundalk town centre in the early hours of the morning was likened to somebody starting to watch a film half way through. On September 30, 2011, at 1.44am Gardai in Crowe St saw taxi driver, Liam Johnston of 14 Grange Drive, Muirhevnamor, exiting his vehicle and chasing two males with a two foot long pole. Prior to that, Mr Johnston had been observed driving the wrong way down a one-way street following the men and disrupting traffic. However, solicitor, Frank McDonnell, told Dundalk District Court that the full details of the incident reveal that his client was the victim and had been attempting to defend his property. “When the Gardai arrived, it was like being half way through a film. What they say was what they saw.
However, before that the two men had damaged Mr Johnston’s car and he wanted to get them with the intention of calling the Gardai. “There was roadworks in the town centre at the time so he went down the wrong way. He then grabbed the pole, which was in his car, to give chase but when the Gardai came it appeared that he was the miscreant. He thought he was going about things the wrong way”, stated Mr McDonnell who added that the two men had got away. Judge Halpin, stated that he understood, what had motivated the defendant, but added that the two men had probably done him a favour in escaping, as he questioned what Mr Johnston would have done with the two foot pole. Judge Halpin adjourned the case to December 4 to allow the defendant make a €200 donation to the Capuchin Friary in Dublin.

The wind turbine is at the heart of the Centre for Renewable Energy
As traditional energy costs rise and viable alternatives are sought, so too has the demand for the Certificate in Renewable Energy at the Lifelong Learning Centre in DKIT which has been running since 2008. In response, the Cer-
tificate is now available in online distance learning mode to make it even more flexible for prospective participants. The 24 week evening and now online Certificate course is run by Paul McArtain and Ray Byrne, researchers in the
Centre for Renewable Energy at DKIT. The Certificate has a very practical focus and covers solar hot water systems, solar photovoltaic systems, biofuels, wind power systems and water energy like hydropower, ocean and tidal
energy sources. Participants will also undertake an energy project. Denis Cummins, president of DKIT, said that the Institute has identified renewable energy in its new strategic plan as an area of major focus for them.

Post Polio Support Group Fundraiser By Paul Byrne
Fundraising is an important function of the Post Polio Support Group and with this in mind Brendan Moore from the Dundalk branch has launched a new initiative asking people to collect their 1c and 2c coins for the organisation. Brendan says that the funds are vital in ensuring the post polio support group can respond to the needs of polio survivors. “The Post Polio Support Group exists to offer a comprehensive system of supports to Polio Survivors. Fundraising is key to knitting these together. The proceeds raised are applied speedily and directly to meet a variety of Survivor needs. They complement the funding from the Health Service Executive which covers administration and certain service provisions.” explains Brendan. “With our latest fundraiser we
are asking people in the County to collect 1c and 2c coins and hand them in to me on behalf of the Post Polio Support Group. For every €1 donated a ticket will be given to the collector and they will be automatically entered into a draw to win a meal at a local hotel. “The appeal runs from 1st September 2013 to 30th April 2014. The draw for the meal will be made shortly after the appeal ends. Hopefully people will get behind us in this fundraiser and generate some much needed funds for the group” added Brendan. As a result of the generosity of people who support these fundraisers, the Post Polio Support Group has an increased capacity to respond flexibly to the needs of Polio Survivors, particularly in stressful or emergency situations. For more information contact Brendan Moore at 0429356706.
Senator Jim D’Arcy opened his new office in the Blackrock Village Centre on Monday October 14. The office is to facilitate easy access to everyone from the Blackrock and Dundalk area. Senator D’Arcy works three-days a week in Leinster House, but when at home, he is often stopped by people as he is walking around the town seeking his advice. He would then invite them into a local café for a chat, however when he is approached at a Gaelic match or at a social function it is difficult to give the people the attention they deserve. “I decided to open this office due to demands from people looking for a “chat” in a private comfortable setting”, stated Jim. The office will have set walk in clinic hours and for people who can not attend at clinic times they can make an appointment. Clinic times are Monday 11am to 1pm, Saturday 11am to 1pm or by appointment. Contact Phone 01 6183059 or email: jim.darcy@oireachtas.ie.

Man admitted driving while disqualified A man who admitted driving while disqualified was banned for a further four years after pleading guilty to a drink driving charge at Dundalk District Court. Oliver Muckian of Rosskeagh, Kilcurry, was already serving a ban for a drink driving conviction on November 12, 2010, when he was stopped by Gardai at Red Cow on August 20, 2011. He failed a roadside breath test and was taken to Dundalk Garda Station where a breath sample showed he was over the limit. He was described as being fully co-operative and had not come to Garda attention since. Solicitor, Peter Lavery, stated that his client understood the
seriousness of driving while disqualified. “A very close personal friend had died and he drove to Carlingford where he had a few drinks. He understands that he shouldn’t have done it. “Other than driving offences he has led a decent life. Although he is unemployed, he is trying to get back to work and is doing a course at present”, added Mr Lavery. In relation to the drink driving charge, Judge Halpin imposed a four year disqualification and a €175 fine. For driving while disqualified he was fined €125. Other charges were taken into consideration. The disqualification was postponed for six months.

Make A Wish concert
The Legend of Luke Kelly and Make a Wish Foundation Car Draw take place on Friday November 1 in the Fairways Hotel. On the night it will be revealed whether the dreams of the Children in Co Louth who are registered with Make A Wish will all have come true. Tickets for the draw for a new VW car are still available and tickets for the big night are available from Central News, McEvoys, Mc Manus’s Bar and the Fairways Hotel.
A sports fan was so desperate to sign up to Sky TV that he attempted to open a bank account using a forged driving licence. Ian Maguire of 236 Cedarwood Park, Cox’s Demesne, Dundalk, had been blacklisted from Sky and was hoping to set up a standing order in the name of Tony Smith so he could subscribe to the channel. However, a bank employee became suspicious and called the Gardai, resulting in his appear-
ance at Dundalk District Court. Insp Martin Beggy told the court that Mr Maguire admitted making the fake licence and presenting it in the bank. He told the Gardai that he had been blacklisted from Sky and wanted to open an account in that name. Solicitor, Frank McDonnell, stated that the licence was of such poor quality that the staff member was not impressed by it. He added that his client had a change
of heart half way through, walked out of the bank and left the licence behind him. He pointed out that the only motivation of the unemployed father of one was to get a subscription in order to watch sport on television. Judge Halpin stated that this “act of madness” could have been very serious if he had gone through with it, as he dismissed the charge under the Probation Act.

Busy time for Coláiste Lú pupils THE students of Coláiste Lú were busy on Tuesday last as they packed almost 2,000 bottles with potentially life-saving messages. Elderly and vulnerable people throughout County Louth will receive better emergency treatment as a result of the students’ hard work. Coláiste Lú undertook the Message in a Bottle scheme in conjunction with Dundalk Lions club. The Message in a Bottle scheme, or Teachtaireacht
i mBuidéal as it is known in the gaelcholáiste, is an Emergency Information Scheme that directs the emergency services such as ambulance crews and first responders to information stored in a plastic bottle which is kept in the household fridge. Vulnerable people or those with a medical condition can enter details, such as their health condition, emergency contact, doctor and medication details, on a form which is
placed in the fridge bottle. This saves the emergency services valuable time in identifying the patient and their emergency contacts. It is a potential lifesaver and provides peace of mind to users, their friends and families. “When I suggested to the students that we take part in the Message in a Bottle scheme they jumped at the chance to help the more vulnerable members of the local community,” said
Micheál Ó Caoilte, Ceann Bliana at Coláiste Lú. “Their eagerness to help and their enthusiasm are a testament to each of our students and we are very proud of their determination here in Coláiste Lú.” Coláiste Lú’s open night will take place on Thursday October 24 from 7pm to 9pm All are welcome. Pain of family problems
A MAN who was drinking in an attempt to deal with family problems became so intoxicated that he had to be taken to hospital. Danny Dundon of 73 Castletown Road, Dundalk, was taken to Dundalk Garda Station on April 23 this year after security at the Long Walk Shopping Centre called Gardai. They found Mr Dundon in a very intoxicated state and unsteady on his feet. At the station he was seen by a doctor and then taken to hospital due to his condition. As a result, he appeared at Dundalk District Court where he pleaded guilty to a public order charge and was fined €100. His solicitor stated that Mr Dundon is a 25-year-old unemployed man who is currently undergoing an adult literacy course. The solicitor added that the defendant, who had previous convictions for public order, drank to ease the pain of family problems.

n Thursday, 17th October 2013, Credit Unions in County Louth, across Ireland and around the world will join in celebrating International Credit Union Day and the critically important role Credit Unions play in meeting the financial and social needs of ordinary people and in helping to build sustainable Communities. Since 1948, International Credit Union Day has been celebrated annually on the third Thursday of October. Each year, the international event affords the opportunity to remember credit unions’ proud
history and promote awareness of and support for the credit union difference. This year’s theme, “Credit Unions Unite for Good: A Better Way,” emphasizes the benefits of cooperation among credit unions worldwide. It also speaks to the powerful global network of 56,000 credit unions, which no other financial institution can claim, and the advantages that result from sharing challenges, experiences and solutions with one another to better serve members. Credit unions are unique because they are not-for-profit, democratically controlled, member-
owned cooperatives. Credit unions pool their members’ assets to provide low-cost loans and other financial services in the best interest of the members, not to earn shareholder profits. The credit union movement’s cooperative spirit is embraced by more than 200 million members served by 56,000 credit unions in 101 countries worldwide, working together to achieve economic progress. Credit unions play a vital role in the economic development and stability of the communities they serve, helping people improve their lives through access to affordable financial
services and making the world a better place to live. In Ireland today 2.9 million people are members of Credit Unions and based on its co-operative structure and low risk business model, the sector has, in general, emerged relatively strong and somewhat removed from the financial turmoil that has befallen banking. Billy Doyle is Manager of Dundalk Credit Union, Market St., and speaking ahead of International Credit Union Day he said “an emphasis on the importance of people and community continues to be at the heart of the success of Credit Unions in
Ireland. The impact of austerity and economic difficulties at a national level are exerting a significant burden on ordinary people. People from all walks of life are increasingly seeing the benefits of their local Credit Union”. Billy added that Dundalk Credit Union itself has had an excellent financial performance in 2013 and is about to launch a new range of electronic payment and savings services for its growing membership. This International Credit Union Day, we hope everyone will join in celebrating the credit union difference, its proud cooperative heritage, and the wonderful
15
opportunities credit union membership offers the ordinary people of Ireland for many years to come.
If you have not done already done so, why not join your local Credit Union today and
become part of an organisation where people are genuinely worth more than money.

Back in 2009 Tom Fitzsimons and Rosemary Hussey released a CD called ‘There is a place’ with all the proceeds raised going to SOSAD and Mother of Peace Orphanage in South Africa. The CD proved to be very popular with the public and raised much needed funds for both charities. Four years later with ‘There is a place’ still being played regularly and has resulted in Tom and Rosemary being asked to re-release the CD, The eleven religious and traditional songs include classics such as ‘The Lord’s my Shepherd’ ‘Hymn to St Pio’ and ‘ From a distance’. Tom from Navan says that the people of Dundalk have been very receptive towards the CD and thanked them for their support over the years. “When we originally released the CD back in 2009 we were very happy with the response and it was great to raise money for SOSAD and the mother of peace orphanage in South Africa. I have been singing since I was a wee fella and I remember back in 2000 when the new millennium came I made a resolution to go into a studio and put some music on CD”, explained Tom. “Eventually I got around to it and the result was ‘There is a Place’ being released in 2009. We are now re-releasing the CD and it is available to buy for €10 in Brendan Marmion’s paint shop on Clanbrassil St and Carroll’s Newsagents in the Longwalk Shopping Centre.

Blackrock promenade Blackrock promenade is about to receive another major enhancement with the installation of a beautiful new sculpture. Blackrock Tidy Towns have planned for some years to acknowledge the fishing origins of the village with a suitable public work of art. Internationally renowned sculptor Richard Perry was awarded the commission for the piece, which will be
made from Irish blue limestone and which will be located in the raised rose bed beside the southern slipway on the promenade. Construction of the foundation for the sculpture has been completed, and the piece itself is expected to be installed within a few weeks. Richard Perry will make a presentation on the background and inspiration for his sculpture during the “Beauti-
ful Blackrock” awards ceremony in The Clermont on Monday October 21, and everyone is invited to come along to hear him. This new addition to the promenade and seafront area will further enhance the Gold Medal village and add to its attractiveness as a place to live and as a visitor destination. An official unveiling of the sculpture will take place later.

Nissan introduces the all new Nissan NOTE. Small car price, Big car design, space, technology and specification. 2014 should be a bumper year for Nissan with a raft of new cars over the coming months. The next 18 months alone will see the introduction of 6 new mainstream products for the car company – including a re-generated Micra, a brand new Note, New Qashqai, X-Trail and an eagerly anticipated C-Segment hatchback. The first of this avalanche of new models is the new Nissan Note which will reach our shores later on this year in October. A bold new design, exceptional practicality and interior space and unrivalled value for money will move the new Note up a gear in terms of its appeal

in the small family car market. Starting from less than €16,000 and packed full of equipment, the new Note is aggressively primed to go head to head and compete directly with the more traditional “players” in the B-Segment such as Fiesta, Yaris, Polo and Clio.
In addition, seamlessly connecting design and technology, the new Note brings a number of innovative premium features to the small car market for the first time. From the Nissan Safety Shield – which links three safety systems (Blind Spot
Warning, Lane Departure Warning and Moving Object Detection) to create a comprehensive protection and driver assistance package – to the advanced Around View Monitor which gives a 360 bird’s eye view when parking, the new Note sets the benchmark
