THE Filipino community in Dundalk have rallied together this week as they gather food and clothes to be sent back home following the devastation left behind by Typhoon Haiyan. Many of them spent last weekend anxiously trying to contact family and loved ones from back home after the worst typhoon in living memory left a trail of death and destruction across the Philippines. Cheryl Rodriguez, a nurse in the Louth County hospital, who has been living in Dundalk since 2004 was hugely relieved to ring home on Saturday to find out that Typhoon Haiyan had not reached her home city of Ca-

gayan De Oro and that her family were all ok. “It is absolutely awful what is happening at the moment back home and I pray for all the people affected by this terrible typhoon. My home is in the south of the Philippines and although the wind and rain has been very bad the government has labelled it ‘Signal 1’ which is not too bad. The areas affected by the typhoon are ‘Signal 4’ which is the absolute worst a weather warning can be.” explained Cheryl. “Obviously myself and my husband Gary are so relieved that our families are ok but it is so terrible how many people have been killed and left homeless and needing food from this typhoon. Dream weekend for Louth Sports By Paul Byrne soccer in Louth with but for the Irish rugby It was a weekend to re- David Kearney scoring team as well as prestigmember for rugby and two tries in a dream de- ious awards received by both Stephen Kenny and Richie Towell at Friday evening’s PFAI awards. David Kearney from Willville in Carlingford came off the bench to devastating effect to put the gloss on a convincing 40-9 victory over Samoa at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin. The 25-year-old scored two tries with the first one coming thanks to a pass from his older brother Robert. David was given his chance to shine having starred for Leinster in recent seasons and he definitely made a good impression on new Ireland boss Joel Schmidt with his impressive second half cameo. The game was a proud occasion for the Cooley area as Devin Toner, whose parents hail from the peninsula,

Stephen Kenny receiving his award

also played an important part in the win. On Friday evening a magnificent season for Dundalk FC was rewarded with manager Stephen Kenny winning the inaugural PFAI Manager of the year award and Richie Towell picking up the Young Player of the Year award. Reflecting on his

David Kearney

award Stephen Kenny said the award was testament to all the hard work done by everyone at the club including players and backroom staff. “I think the award I received on Friday evening is testament to not just my work but all the players and my backroom staff of Vinnie, Steve, Gerry, Gra-

ham, Martin, Paul, Noel and Dr Samir. It’s been a great season and we are already looking forward to testing ourselves in Europe next season.” explained Stephen. “The aim for us next season is to try and play 50 games which will mean that we are doing pretty well in all the competitions we’re

in. We’re already looking around for players to add to the squad and we have a pre-season to organise so we’re still pretty busy even though the season has ended. When asked for a personal highlight from the 2013 season Kenny noted that watching the squad evolve had been very satisfying. “I suppose my own highlight was watching the team grow in confidence and watching the players evolve to become quite a formidable outfit. We beat all the top teams at least twice throughout the season and we really kicked on after a slowish start. It was nice to see Richie Towell win an award as well as he has been outstanding although I must admit I thought he deserved to win the Senior award as well.” he added.

Friends respond in hour of need By Niamh Kirk

NEIGHBOURS and friends of an 86-year-old woman who was the victim of a robbery in her own home have rallied around the pensioner

who endured the terrifying ordeal. The woman endured the traumatic experience when three heartless thieves broke into her home, is being comforted by local people. On Saturday November 2 in the late evening the 86-year-old woman was settling down in her living room to watch Winning Streak when an unknown woman suddenly appeared in her living room. The intruder told the woman that her bedroom window

had been left open and that the room had been ransacked. She inspected the room and saw that nothing had been taken, but two men then entered the property, rushed at the woman in her living room, grabbed her handbag and ran away. Local councillor Pearce Mc Geough visited the woman in the days afterward and said she was left in a traumatised state but praised the reaction of her neighbours. He described the inci-

dent as a very sad reflection on society but also noted that there are two sides to Irish life on display here and described how the woman’s neighbours had sown overwhelming kindness and support in the wake of the robbery. “I cannot speak more highly of them. They were fantastic to her and did everything they could to comfort her”, said Councillor McGeough. “I have spoken to her recently and she is im-

proving, but this is a terribly sad story. I would encourage anyone who knows anything about this to get in touch with the Gardai in Castlebellingham or Ardee. She is a lovely lady who did no harm to anyone. “The Gardai are doing their best but they don’t have the resources to deal with all the issues as they could. I would encourage people to be vigilant, make sure their windows are closed and have their alarm system on.”

Drink driving A Dundalk man who was convicted of drink driving for a third time was disqualified from driving for six years and fined €150 at Dundalk District Court. Solicitor, Sean T O’Reilly, stated that his client, who was a retired firefighter, had bought the car in order to help his elderly mother.

Shoe Box appeal Took father’s car need cuddly toys to buy cigarettes Dundalk Leader 13th November 2013

By Eunan Whyte

The people of Dundalk are being asked to show their generosity once again with the annual Shoe Box appeal now in full swing. The Team Hope initiative encourages people to fill a shoe box with toys, treats and clothing to provide a special present for a child in the developing world. Local organiser, Damien Higgins, is making a special appeal this year for cuddly toys to help fill the boxes. “We are in dire need of soft cuddly toys for our boxes as we have lost a sponsor who helped provided them in the past. “We are hoping that people will donate good quality new or second hand toys to help fill the boxes. We want them in good condition but if they need a wash we can do that”, explained

A man who took his father’s car after a night out to drive to the shop for cigarettes appeared at Dundalk District Court where he pleaded guilty to a drink driving charge. The court heard that Dean McDonagh of 94 College Manor, Hoey’s Lane, Dundalk, was stopped at College Manor at 4.45am and taken to Dundalk Garda Station. While there it was discovered that he had a can of pepper spray.

Barrister, Irene Sands, stated that her client, who had made an error, carried the pepper spray as he was having issues with a particular individual. “He had come back from the pub on the night in question and wanted his cigarettes. He took his father’s car and it was a drunken error. He was close to home but accepts that he shouldn’t have been on the road. “He was carrying pepper spray as he had

Judge Marie Quirke imposed a two year disqualification and a €50 fine in relation to the drink driving charge, taking the no insurance charge into account. He was fined €50 for driving without a licence and a further €50 for possession of a certain article.

Damien. The depot for collecting the boxes this year is Unit 2, Airmid House on the Avenue Road beside The Gym and Damien is calling on people to drop in with a box or toys suitable for children aged

two to 14. People should pack the boxes with age appropriate items and mark the child’s age on the box, also stating whether it is suitable for a boy or a girl. “Last year we set a target of 2,000 and we

ended up with 2,240 so we hope to get a similar number this time”, explained Damien who added that the boxes will go to Congo, Rwanda, Burundi, Swaziland and Mozambique.

Anne Marie designs a special prize By Niamh Kirk

Local interior designer Ann Marie Hamill is stunned after raising €7,000 in just four days for the Jack and Jill Children’s Foundation. The fundraising effort began last weekend at Ideal Homes exhibition where Ann Marie announced that she was holding a raffle that will give someone’s home the spring clean of their dreams. Using her design experience Ann Marie has collaborated with local businesses to offer a living-room revamp for the lucky winner. Wogan’s Interiors, Franks Carpets and Deismireán will provide furnishings such as the couch, flooring and accessories for the renovation while Ann-Marie will provide

the soft furnishings and design the room. Ann-Marie organised the bumper prize because she knows the great work that Jack and Jill Foundation do. She had a family member cared for by the group who provide nursing care to children in their own homes and promised that she would hold a fundraiser to show her gratitude. She came-up

with the living room revamp raffle which proved to be very popular at the trade show. Ann Marie’s design skills are well known as she was regularly featured on RTE’s interior design competition show ‘Showhouse’ where two Irish designers were asked to fit out a showhouse which was then judged by the public.

Ann-Marie launched the raffle at the Ideal Homes trade Show in Dublin over the bank holiday weekend and made €7,000 over the four days. letter to the editor Calling on Dundalk Town Council Dear Editor, The need and relevance of installation of traffic lights along Dublin Road right beside the Toyota dealer is very essential.

Motor accidents have been witnessed on several occasions on this spot, coupled with unnecessary motor traffic build-up at all times but especially in the morning. Collision between cyclists and motor cars are also very rampant at this spot as there is no traffic lights to control the pedestrians or cars. The increase in the number of car and bicycle users around the college also calls for urgent installation of traffic lights on this

spot to avoid accident. However, the installation of traffic lights in this area will not only save human lives but will eradicate collisions and pave the way for free flow of traffic at this junction. It will make lives easier for car traffic, students and pedestrians. Yours, Rauf College Manor Dundalk

Over to you QUESTION: Do you agree with child beauty pageants?

Anne Coburn I don’t agree with them at all. Children shouldn’t be taking part in competitions like this. I think in years to come we will go down as the generation which took away children’s childhoods.

Rory Gallagher’s music in Spirit Store

THE Band of Friends is not a tribute to Rory more a celebration of his life and music as the band consists of musicians who played with Rory throughout his career. There are many tribute bands playing the music of Rory Gallagher, some good some not so good but what they are doing is keeping the music of this great musician alive. The band consists of the following members: Gerry McAvoy: (Bass Guitar) played with Rory for 20 years from 1971 to 1991. Ted McKenna: (Drums) played with Rory from 1977 to 1981. Ted is a rock drummer’s drummer. Marcel Scherpenzeel: (Guitar) grew up with Rory’s music and Gerry is quoted as saying “This is the closest guitarist to Rory you will ever hear”. So as you can see this is not a tribute band. This is THE BAND.

Margaret McGahon I wouldn’t be a fan of them at all. I think children should be left as children and not be pushed into stuff like this.

Rose McGinty

Liz Mua

I think they are a good idea. I think they give the children confidence and it’s nice to see the kids all dressed up and enjoying themselves.

I would be completely against them. These competitions are exposing children to adult behaviour and children of that age should not be judged like that.

Patricia Grant I think it’s really wrong. Children should enjoy their childhoods and stuff like this make them old before their time. I’d have no time for these pageants at all.

Mountain walk and lecture The newly formed Mourne Cooley Gullion Geotourism Project have organised two events for Carlingford for this Thursday, November 14 as part of their drive to promote the region. Project geologist Dr Siobhán E. Power along with archaeologist, Dr Vanessa Ryan will be leading the moonlight guided walk of the medieval town of Carlingford which will commence at 5pm at the carpark of the Tourist Office in Carlingford.

The walk will be followed by a lecture in the Carlingford Heritage Centre at 7pm on ‘Carlingford and its Castle in the Middle Ages’ by Prof Terry Barry, an archaeologist and Associate Professor of Medieval History at Trinity College, Dublin. Both events are part of Science Week and follow meet and greets which have taken place in schools around the area this week. Project geologist Dr Siobhán E. Power is hop-

ing as many people as possible will join the group for the scenic walk around Carlingford. “We’re calling it a moonwalk walk and we are being positive and hoping that the sky will be clear for us on Thursday evening. We will be starting the walk at the Tourist Office in Carlingford and walking up to King John’s Castle and around and back into the town. “We are hoping to finish the walk around 6:30 or so and have tea and a bite to

eat in the Heritage Centre before sitting down to hear a lecture on Carlingford and it’s castles in the Middle ages’ by Prof Terry Barry”, she stated. The Mourne Cooley Gullion Geotourism project was launched in June and aims to develop an internationally recognised tourism destination based on the special geology, geomorphology and archaeology of the Mourne Mountains, the Cooley Peninsula and the Ring of Gullion.

W piątek, w klubie Malucha dzieci będą mogły odkryć wspólne cechy naszych narodów, poprzez zabawę i wspólne warsztaty, a w sobotę zaprosimy Polskich i Irlandzkich przyjaciół na wspólne ucztowanie, muzykowanie i mecz siatkówki. Szczegóły na naszej stronie internetowej www.dundalk.pl Pozdrawiam i do zobaczenia, Agnieszka Boniewicz

I have a colleague here in work who was trying to get in contact with her family all weekend but the phone lines were down and she couldn’t get in contact with anybody. Thankfully she got word through earlier on that they were ok but unfortunately there are so many others that didn’t make it”, she added. The typhoon has claimed countless lives with UN humanitarian members estimating that “local officials estimate that some 10,000 people were killed in one city alone,” referring to Tacloban, capital of the eastern province of Leyte. The UN has appealed for aid to be sent to the Philippines to help those affected while the Philippines government has declared a

state of calamity following the typhoon. Cheryl says that the local Filipino community have rallied together and are currently collecting goods to be sent to those in

need back home. “There are about 50 Filipinos in Dundalk and we are a close knit community. We have got together and we are currently collecting food and clothes to be sent back. We will also be fundraising on the streets soon if we can get a permit from the Gardaí. Our hearts are with all those back home and they are all in our thoughts. We will do all we can to help”, she said. The scale of the disaster continues to unfold with images of where Haiyan first made landfall, showing whole districts of coastal towns reduced to piles of splintered wood. Haiyan’s sustained winds reached speeds of up to 315kph, making it the strongest typhoon in the world this year and one of the most powerful ever.

Theatre Workshop back on stage Dundalk Theatre workshop are putting the finishing touches on their new production of the renowned classic “ The Winslow Boy” by Terence Rattigan. With the popularity of costume dramas such as Downton Abbey set in pre first world war London, audiences can look forward to a sparkling night of theatre in An Tain Theatre next week. Set in pre-world war 1913 Edwardian London and based on a true story, it tells the tale of Arthur Winslow who campaigns to clear his son’s name, having been

expelled as a cadet from Royal Naval College for the alleged theft of a five shilling postal order. The production has been rehearsed intensively by Director Fergus Mullen and his talented cast for several months. Tim Ahern is Arthur Winslow with Gabriel Toomey as his wife Grace. Aine Corcoran plays his independently minded daughter Catherine. Tom Muckian and Nigel Clinton supply the competing love interest for Catherine in the shape of the John the ambitious Army Officer

and Desmond Curry the solid family solicitor, respectively. Pauline Wilson and Bernard Dunne play the gushing journalist Ms Barnes and her listless photographer side-kick Fred. Maeve Montgomery plays Violet the quirky but loyal house maid. Fergus Mullen takes on the role of Sir Robert Morton the barrister engaged by Arthur Winslow. This is the first time the workshop’s two All Ireland award winning actors, Tim Ahern and Fergus have appeared on stage together.

Paudie Breen fresh from his success in the recent Musical Society production of The King And I, plays the academically challenged older Winslow Boy Dickie. The cast is completed by talented new-comer 16 years old Sean Og Kearns who takes on the title role of Ronnie Winslow. Performances start each night at 7.30 pm for a strictly limited run of four nights only, between November 13 and 16. Booking in the Tain Box Office town hall Dundalk 042 9392919.

Carcasses found dumped The butchered bones of five bovine animals were found dumped in Ravansdale on Monday morning. Louth County Council Veterinary officers attended the scene and found that the animals had been

dealt with in a highly professional way. It is thought that the carcasses could be from an illegal meat cutting plant and it is the view that the cutting was carried out by individuals with

professional butchery skills. This had led authorities to believe that those involved had professional skills. The matter was reported to The Food Safety Fitzpatrick, presiAuthorities, Food Brian dent of DkIT SU who was Fraud Sub division. conferred recently

Tribute to driving force behind The House Continued from Page 1 chairman of ‘The House’ Board of Management for 22 years. The aim of the project was to provide somewhere within the community where young people who were excluded from all mainstream programmes, projects and clubs would be welcomed, learn new skills and be given new opportunities. Brian Doyle who worked closely alongside Tom in helping to get the project off the ground back in 1991 described Tom as ‘the driving force behind the project’. “Tom was a lovely, lovely man and I really can’t speak highly enough of

him”, explained Brian. “Myself and Tom started working together in the mid 1980s running a Foroige club in Cox’s Demesne and from that we got the idea to create a place for ‘The House’. We were given two derelict houses by Dundalk Town Council and over six months local people gave their time voluntarily to turn it into a home”, he added “Tom was the backbone of the whole project and he was a hugely popular figure in ‘The House’. We were all devastated when we heard he had died and we wanted to do something to honour his memory.

We decided to name our meeting room after him which will now be known as ‘The Tom Myers Meeting Room’ and we unveiled a lovely picture of him which was opened by his two granddaughters”, noted Brian. Tom, who passed away suddenly last May was remembered at the event by his wife Peggy and children, Nicola, Cormac, Niall, Andrea, Aoife and the late Aidan. Grandchildren, Haleigh, Rhys, Leah, Eabha, Erin, Cara Mae and Shay, along with siblings, Marie, Paddy, Rita and Dolores were also very proud of this special tribute.

Young driver had momentary lapse An 18-year-old man who was described as having a ‘momentary lapse’ while driving learned a valuable lesson after being spared a conviction at Dundalk District Court. Garth English of 5 St Ronan’s Villas, Dromiskin, made a contribution of €500 to the local Simon Community after appearing at Dundalk District Court to face a dangerous driving charge.

Insp Kevin Daly told the court that on October 1 at 10.15pm three boy racers were in convoy on the Newry Road. The defendant was on the inside lane and pulled out to try to prevent one of the other cars from passing. He was arrested for dangerous driving, and the Inspector stated that Mr English was in his father’s car and was fully insured. There was no collision. The defendant’s solicitor

Graduation celebrations

Three Dundalk students were among the ten who successfully graduated in the ‘Latch On’ adult literacy course which took place in Drogheda. David Coyle, Michael D’Arcy and Monina McCarthy from Dundalk were amongst the ten who successfully completed the course. Latch On – Literacy and Technology Hands On – is a literacy programme which has been developed by the University of Queensland, Australia and brought to Ireland by Down Syndrome Ireland. DSI’s involvement came about as a result of the concerns of parents nationwide in relation to low literacy levels among their adult children with Down syndrome . The programme which has been designed specifically for adults with intellectual disabilities, provides opportunities for adults with Down syndrome to commence and/or continue their literacy development. It is a socio-cultural approach to literacy and uses a combination of technology and more traditional methods of literacy instruction to enhance the literacy development of adults with intellectual disabilities. Clare Leonard, who is a coordinator for Latch on congratulated the group but warned that there would not be a class next year unless sponsorship could be found.

stated that her client had been in employment since August 2012 and the stats from his employers tracking system showed that he was the top driver in terms of safety. “This was a momentary lapse and was out of character. He was with his friend and never did this before, while he doesn’t intend to do it again. He has learned a valuable lesson. “Thankfully there was no

collision and he is thankful to the Gardai for stopping him. He apologises for his actions”, she added. Judge Marie Quirke agreed to accept a contribution and dismissed the charge after €500 was paid in court. “This is a very serious matter and he has to learn that he can’t behave this way. If his father pays the money, I want him to pay it back”, added the judge.

Scouts spend the night on the wet and windy Cooleys ON what turned out to be a cold, wet and windy night, 15 young scouts from St Patrick’s Scout Group, Dundalk took to the Cooley Mountains to take part in the Louth Scout County Overnight Hike. The scouts and their leaders had prepared for the hike/camp over the previous few weeks, learning navigational skills, how to pitch lightweight tents and how to cook on different types of stoves. For most of the scouts this was to be their first overnight hike on the mountains and one they are unlikely to ever forget. The hike started at

the old Post Office in Ravensdale at 10am on Saturday, where over 70 scouts and leaders from the county met and set upon their walk. By Noon they had reached the site where they would pitch their tents for the night. The weather had been on their side up to this point but just as they started to pitch the tents the heavens opened. Luckily all the scouts were prepared and quickly had their rain gear on. After an hour of pitching their tents all the scouts headed off in patrols along an 8km hike route around part of the Cooley Mountains.

Along the route the patrols had to complete eight different bases run by the leaders including first aid, mental challenges, estimation exercises, navigational skills and tracking. By the time the scouts got back to the campsite at 6pm the wind had got stronger making it difficult to get dinner cooked. However with a little bit of help by the leaders all the scouts were fed and had clean-up done within the hour. With the campfire cancelled due to the weather, it was a early night for all. The morning saw breakfast followed by the taking down of tents.

Dundalk’s 1988 team honoured at Cup Final By Paul Byrne

month’s mind

NOVENA NOVENA TO THE SACRED HEART

Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I asked you for many favours. This time I ask for this special favour (mention it). Take it, dear Heart of Jesus, and place it within your own broken heart, where your Father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes it will become your favour, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for 3 days. Promise publication and favours will be granted. (never know to fail). S.R.

thanksgiving Message of 25th october from our lady of medugorje

“Dear children! Today I call you to open yourselves to prayer. Prayer works miracles in you and through you. Therefore, little children, in the simplicity of heart seek of the Most High to give you the strength to be God's children and for Satan not to shake you like the wind shakes the branches. Little children, deside for God anew and seek only His will - and then you will find joy and peace in Him. Thank you for having responded to my call.”

McCann, Gerard (Gerry), St Alphonsus Rd., Dundalk and Baldoyle, Dublin. Sunday 17th November, 2013 11.30 Mass, St. Partick's Cathedral, Dundalk. Saturday 23rd November, 2013 6pm Mass, St. Nicholas of Myra Church, Malahide Rd (Kinsealy) Dublin. His family wishes to thank all who supported them at this time

Unfortunately for Dundalk fans it was Mick Cooke’s Drogheda side lining out against Sligo Rovers for the recent FAI Cup final but there was still a strong lilywhites feel to the occasion with a warm tribute to the recently deceased Tommy McConville as well as the double winning side from 1988 being honoured. It’s hard to believe that 25 years have passed since Turlough O’Connor’s side achieved a rare double winning the league by a single point before edging past Derry City in the final. The

players involved in the cup final on that day in May 1988 were Alan O’Neill, Gino Lawless, John Cleary, Harry McCue, Joey Malone, Martin Lawlor, Larry Wyse, Martin Murray, Barry Kehoe, Dessie Gorman, Terry Eviston. with substitute O’Connor coming in for Wyse. John Cleary stroked home a controversially awarded penalty to give the Lilywhites a 1-0 victory meaning Dundalk had won their second league and cup double. Sadly one of the stars of that cup final, Barry Kehoe, wasn’t at the Aviva on Sunday having passed away in 2002 after

a prolonged battle with cancer. The rest of the team from that day strode out on to the pitch on Sunday a little slower and a touch greyer perhaps but it was a treat for Dundalk fans to see the heroes from 88 get recognised 25 years on from one of the clubs greatest triumphs. The team from 88 got a great reception from the 18000 crowd as they were officially honoured by the FAI to celebrate the 25th anniversary of their cup final win. There was also a moving tribute to Tommy McConville on the big screen before kick off as well as a Dundalk banner in the crowd paying respect to Tommy Mac.

Paddy’s Poetry Reading On Friday night Paddy Donohoe took to the stage for the first time to read the poetry he has been writing for years. Paddy came to the Simon Community shelter in Dundalk just over four years ago. He had been sleeping rough in Dublin and says he didn’t care for himself. But after coming to Dundalk he got the support he needed, particularly from his support worker Sarah. “She thought more of me than I did myself,” says Paddy. “if it wasn’t for the staff there I’d be dead on the streets.” Writing poetry was something that Paddy had always done as he finds it therapeutic, and has read to some people privately, but this was Paddy first time on stage. On Friday

An Tain Theatre Presents A stage adaptation of Christine McKenna’s best-selling novel ‘The Misremembered Man’ is set to come to Dundalk Tain theatre. The dark-love story follows Jamie McCloone, a bachelor whose childhood has been far from happy. Sensing his loneliness, his neighbors Rose and Paddy rally round to help him and urge him to respond to a lonely hearts ad in the newspaper. The result is a meeting of complete opposites. The show takes place for two nights from November 29-30 the An Tain Theatre.

night he received a rapturous response from the audience for his honest account of his life experiences. He ended with a poem about Dundalk that offered a fresh perspective on the town, and the positive impact it can have. “It was just how I felt at the time, it’s a great little town. I don’t mean that in a bad way. There are places that are dying a death but the people are still fighting for it,” he says.

‘Good Morning Dundalk’ It’s a good way to start the day, Just say ‘good morning’, to a stranger, But to have that phrase reciprocated, Will give you a boost, I’ll wager.

So say ‘good morning’ to that stranger, Than that grows into a nod and a wave. The small, but vital interaction, To me, is worth fighting to save.

Maybe it’s the because I’m a blow in, that I see it, This town still has that village appeal, Though its commerce is fighting this recession, The people are friendly and real.

Before long that stranger is a welcome face, Even in the drizzle in The Square. You’re not just another zombie in the rat race, Someone has acknowledged that you’re there.

I’ve been in Dundalk a few years now, And I’ve met both the good and the bad, But each day I feel community bonds widen, And if that stops, it can only be bad.

That’s how I used to feel sometimes, Surrounded by crowds but still alone, But as I try to get rid of my hang-ups, I feel my community appreciation has grown.

This year’s Ardee Baroque festival is set to be particularly special as it celebrates its tenth year. As the only festival in Ireland that concentrates on orchestral Baroque music, over the past ten years it has attracted some of Ireland, Europe’s and America’s finest musicians. This year the Ardee festival has developed, but, is welcoming the return of the Irish Baroque Orchestra and hosting some new acts such as the Irish Youth Opera, Conal Duffy and Michael O’Neill. In 2004 the first Ardee Baroque was launched with the Irish Baroque Orchestra performing two concerts and rehearsing in their down time. They have returned each year since. And this year is no different as the Orchestra has prepared pieces from Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons” for the weekend concerts. The selection has thrilled founder of the festival and Louth County Arts Officer Brian Harten. “Vivaldi pieces are the icing on the tenth birthday cake.

The IBO were with us at the beginning, and it’s great to welcome them back again. For many people in the town, it’s like welcoming old friends home,” he said. The programme has expanded since the festival’s inception and year-on-year attracts big crowds of classical music lovers who relish in the stunning backdrop that the historic town of Ardee provides. “While it may be a small festival, we think it’s perfectly formed, and we’ve managed to combine great music with a welcoming and informal atmosphere,” said John Rowntree, Chairman of the Board of Ardee Baroque. On this year’s festival programme is the first public performance of Irish Youth Opera. Local musicians Conal Duffy and Michael O’Neill perform in ‘Hang the Harpers’ a concert of music composed in Ireland during the 17th and 18th centuries. The festival takes place in a series of venues across Ardee from November 15 to 17.
