Volunteers collecting money for the survivors of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines were the victims of a sickening crime when a man stole money from their collection bucket on Friday afternoon. The callous thief showed the depths to which a thief will sink when he snatched €200 which was destined to help bring aid to the stricken victims in the Philippines. The incident took place on Clanbrassil St on Friday afternoon when local people from the Filipino community were collecting funds for the relief effort. Two of the collectors were standing in front of the Clanbrassil Centre when they were approached by a man described as in his

30s and wearing a red jumper. He indicated to the collectors that he wanted to donate to the cause but needed change of a note. When the collector was organising change the man put his hand into the bucket, grabbed a handful of notes and ran away. He was chased down the road but got away and fundraisers estimated that the thief made off with about €200. While collectors spoke of their disappointment, that one incident was more than compensated by the generosity shown by the people of Dundalk with more than €7,000 raised. The collectors described the results from their collection as ‘really amazing’ and Continued on Page 12

The fastest and most economical way to get to the heart of Dublin

Narrow Water bridge project is set to sink By Niamh Kirk

The €17.3 million EU funding for the Narrow Water Bridge has been pulled leaving the project dead in the water. Louth County Council announced on Friday evening that the Special EU Funding Programme had written to the project managers telling them that the offer of funds had been withdrawn and the funds would now go to other EU projects. The SEUPB manger John McCandles said that following comprehensive discussion on the financial viability of the Narrow Water Bridge the funding had been withdrawn as additional funding required to deliver the project had not been secured. “The SEUPB is now exploring options for the reallocation of this funding to eligible projects capable of being delivered by December 2015 to ensure that the drawdown of funds from the European Commission is maximised and that no money is lost to the Northern Ireland or Ireland economies,” he said. Initially the project managers estimated that the €17.3 EU funding would cover the majority of expenses for the project. However, when tenders for the work were returned it emerged that the cost of the project had been severely underestimated. What was approximately a €20mil-

llion project was revealed that it would cost more than €30 million and potentially as much as €40. To try and help meet the shortfall the Northern Irish Government pledged €3million to the project and the Irish government had promised to invest €3.9milion, however it was not enough to complete the project. Louth County Council, Newry & Mourne District Council and Down District councils have between them already committed to borrowing a combined total of €4.25m leaving a shortfall of about €10m. There had been an initial deadline for a draw-down of the EU funding was set for August 20 but this had been extended to allow the organising committee time to secure more money to meet the shortfall. However after discussions it became apparent that the shortfall in funding would not be met and the EU funding was withdrawn in order to make it available for other projects. An all party convention on the Narrow Water Bridge Project took place in Louth County Council offices on Friday morning where unanimous support for the project was declared. They called on the governments North and South to find a way to deliver the funds in the next two days in the hope that the project can be secured before the funds are redistributed.

Men guilty of deception

A man who asked a friend to collect his Social Welfare payments while at his mother’s funeral in Nigeria mistakenly thought he was entitled to the money. However, Gardai were contacted after Social Welfare staff became suspicious resulting in Isa Ibrahim, 19 An Cearnog, Toberona, Dundalk, and Alex Kolawole Isijola, 25 Riverside Crescent, Newry Road, Dundalk, pleading guilty to deception charges at Dundalk District Court. After hearing the evidence, Judge Conal Gibbons, told the defendants that they would avoid a conviction if they each paid €300 to charity. Insp Martin Beggy stated that

Mr Kolawole Isijola had left for Nigeria and gave his ID card to Mr Ibrahim to collect his payments. Over three weeks a total of €563.50 was collected. Mr Ibrahim had to sign his friend’s name but when Gardai were alerted he admitted the offence. Solicitor, James MacGuill, stated that Mr Kolawole Isijola didn’t realise that he wasn’t entitled to Job Seekers Allowance while out of the State. He had fines to pay and he asked his friend to collect the money and pay them. Judge Gibbons adjourned the case to February 5 and stated that he would strike the matters out if €300 was paid to Turas Counselling Centre and Women’s Aid,

and that all money was repaid to the Dept of Social Welfare. “I can understand the defendant going abroad and thinking he was entitled to Social Welfare but he took an unorthodox method of doing it and criminality came into it by involving his friend. “He shouldn’t have done what he did but I see it as a stupid act on part of the defendants rather than setting out to defraud the Dept of Social Welfare”, stated the judge. Mr Ibrahim was charged with making gains or causing loss by deception, and forgery, on July 10, 17 and 24, 2012, while Mr Kolawole Isijola faced three charges of making gain or causing loss on the same dates.

St Vincent’s celebrates Science Week This year St. Vincent’s secondary school celebrated Science week with a bang as Scientific Sue paid a visit. Spooky slime, magical colour changing potions and foulsmelling ghostly gases were just a few of the extraordinary demonstrations performed by one of Ireland’s leading Science Communicators. First year students played an active role in the first day of events as they witnessed exploding rocks, jelly worms and of course Norbert, the fire breathing dragon. This show which recently featured on the RTE news can only be described as a burning, bubbling, exploding, magical experience that truly brought science to life.

First Year St. Vincent’s student Ciara Smyth experiments with ‘Scientist Sue’ during Science Week

On the second day of events, Transition Year students became CSI agents for the day as they got a true insight into the world of

forensics. This workshop enabled students to solve crimes using fingerprinting techniques, blood typing & pow-

der analysis. Overall students thoroughly enjoyed both events and learned that science really is fun.

New cinema gets green light A new seven screen cinema in Dundalk retail park has been given the green light by Louth planners. The complex will merge three retail units and consist of seven screens, a foyer, ticket, coffee shop and food kiosks. The front of the cinema will be subject to modifications as the main entrance to the cinema will be in unit 2. The entrance in units 3 and 4 will be blocked off and a solid wall will be built between unit 4 and 5. The largest screen in the new cinema would sit 308 seats, with two other sitting 289 and 272, while four smaller screens would sit 206 people each. Finnibar Estates which is in receivership has submitted the plans jointly with their receiver and current manager of the property, David Carson. Objections to the

proposition were lodged by both the Dundalk Multiplex Cinema and the Marshes Shopping centre. The IMC, situated beside the closed Carroll Village Shopping Centre, has been in Dundalk since 1999. It employs 20 people and there are concerns that it may not continue to be commercially viable if the project goes ahead. They say that the cinema make significant contribution and that active commercial uses are a critical issue for the area particularly since the closure of the Carroll Village complex. The submission called for the IMC Dundalk to be given protection and primacy in the planning authorities considerations so that it can remain commercially viable and keep the Longwalk/Carroll Village area active. The Marshes Shopping Centre

objected for similar reasons pointing to the impact that introducing the complex ‘out of town’ would have on the town centre. They said that the cinema had great potential to attract people in evening and weekends, extending normal trading hours which they say should be directed toward the town centre and not an out of town retail park. They also suggest that the cinema will undermine the nature of the retail park eliminating the units from the pool and making things more difficult for future bulk retail investors in the future. There have been a number of attempts to introduce a cinema outside Dundalk town centre in the past. An Application for a 10 screen cinema was rejected in 2010. Objections have been lodged to an Bord Pleanala.

New respite centre to open The Maria Goretti Foundation Centre, a new children’s respite centre is due to open in Lordship in February 2014. The eight bed facility, currently under development, will cater for families in Louth and provide respite for up to 39 children a year with a diagnosis of a disability, from newborn up the age of 18. The Maria Goretti Foundation will enable their parents and carers have a couple of days break from the, often challenging demands of providing full time care, while the centre takes over. The only facility that currently caters for families in Louth is based in Navan, Co Meath, so this new project is hugely welcomed in the locality according

to Sinead Hanlon of the Maria Goretti Foundation. “After all these years of planning, it is great to see the building going up. We still need to fundraise a lot more money and are very grateful to the local businesses who have donated so far”, said Sinead Hanlon, of The Maria Goretti Foundation. The centre came about as a result of the experiences of the late John Hanlon who had considerable contact with the family of a child with disabilities. He was aware of the demands on this child’s parents and wanted to do something to help. So he investigated the services available locally for children and found a need for a residential respite fa-

cility. Mr Hanlon was suffering from Motor Neurone disease so when he passed away in 2008, his family decided to follow through with his intentions. Funded by Louth Disability Services and the HSE, a donation from the Hanlon family, and a site donated by the late Monica McDermott of Lordship, phase one (4 beds) of the development is complete. The Maria Goretti Foundation still needs to raise one million euro to complete phase two (8 beds) and ensure the development and management of the facility into the future. Anyone who wishes to fundraise for The Maria Goretti Foundation can do so by contacting the Maria Goretti foundation on 042

A man who was described as having ‘a catalogue of appalling behaviour’ was given the opportunity to see if he can deal with his issues after Judge Marie Quirke ordered a Probation Report at Dundalk District Court. Kyle Gartland, 433 Ashling Park, Cox’s Demesne, Dundalk, pleaded guilty to a number of motoring offences and had his case adjourned to January 22. The court heard that on June 1 this year, Gardai received reports at 8.30am of an unauthorised taking of a car from Beechmount Drive. At 3pm that day they attended the scene of a crash involving a car which cctv

showed was being driven by the defendant. It also showed him performing ‘donoughts’ prior to the crash with the bus. As a result, Mr Gartland, who has 30 previous convictions, faced charges including hit and run, driving while disqualified, dangerous driving, unauthorised taking and having no insurance. Solicitor Niall Lavery stated that his client had no excuse for his behaviour and accepted responsibility for what he had done. “There is very little I can say that will impress in relation to previous conviction. Despite only being 20 years old he has spent considerable time

in detention. “He has had considerable difficulty in terms of substance abuse but has tried to deal with that and it is hoped that he can put that behind him”, added Mr Lavery who asked the judge to give his client a chance. “His mother has a serious illness and he is the eldest child. I ask that you seek the intervention of the probation services and he assures me that he will deal with issues that arise”, he stated. Judge Marie Quirke stated that in light of the defendant’s age and ‘appalling catalogue of behaviour’ she would seek a Probation Report to see why he is behaving in this manner.

WHEN Dundalk FC were struggling to maintain their very existence back in 2012 Jim Murphy decided to help out the club he loves by putting together a book which would eventually become the most comprehensive story of Dundalk FC to be ever put to print. ‘C’mon the Town- A Dundalk FC Miscellany’ is a 380 page celebration of one of the League of Ireland’s most success-

ful clubs, comprising photographs, statistics, memorabilia, profiles and stories, covering the club’s first 88 seasons in the National League that will consist in the main of previously unpublished material. It became something of a labour of love for Jim who generously decided to offer all proceeds raised from the book towards the club he loves so dearly. This isn’t his first foray into the publishing world having previously released the

much loved ‘The History of Dundalk: The First 100 Years back in 2003. Jim is an avid Dundalk FC fan and club historian and is generally the first person people call if the need to find out anything Dundalk FC related. He has been visiting Oriel Park since the 1940s and he says the book is his contribution to helping the club get back on it’s feet. “We had 400 subscribers for the book who all paid €10 to have their name printed inside

the book and I’d like to thank each one of them. I’m hoping people will come along to the Lilywhite Lounge on Friday evening to help us celebrate the launch of the book. It should be a great night” added Jim. C’Mon the town- A Dundalk FC Miscellany will be launched this Friday night at 8pm in the Lilywhite Lounge. The book which will be available for €25 will be available to buy for just €20 on the evening. The book will also be avail-

The Marist Choir and Dundalk Dramatic Club present A Selection of Christmas Carols and well loved songs in the Marist Church, St Mary’s Road on Sunday 1st December at 3pm.

Forty local men got a chance to literally step into a woman’s world at a unique charity event over the weekend. The brave volunteers took on the challenge to ‘walk a mile in a woman’s shoes’ in aid of local charity Women’s Aid which saw them don everything from kitten heels to towering stilettos and walk a full mile in the Marshes Shopping Centre. Each year Grace Fellowship Dundalk organise a sponsored walk for the local support group Women’s Aid and spokesperson, Dearbhl, explained the thinking behind the idea. “At last years’ walk, T shirts with the slogan ‘walk a mile in her shoes’ on the back were distributed. “We noticed some of the men walking wearing them and just thought, wouldn’t it be great to get men to actually walk a mile in a woman’s shoes for a fundraiser,” said Derbhla. All the participants and spectators got a great laugh out of the event and the sore soles, heels and toes were all in aid of a great cause. The charity walk coincides with the launch

by Women’s Aid of the Man-Up campaign which aims to raise awareness about domestic violence. Later this month Women’s Aid will begin the 16 days of action, running from November 25 to December 10 the campaign is in opposition to violence against women continuing the theme that one in five women will experience domestic abuse at some stage in her life.

Over to you QUESTION: Are you nervous about giving out credit card details when shopping online? By Jill McEvoy

Isabelle Verdin “No not nervous as I never had problems before. My partner would shop online more than me. I would only shop online every so often.”

Kate Drumgoole “No I don’t trust it. I used a 3V card and would never use my credit card as I’m aware of hacking.”

Niamh Curran

Anne Campbell

Maura McGuire

“I wouldn’t trust online security and never did because my mam never did. I’ve only shopped online once. I think it’s too dodgy and am aware of the hacking.”

“I certainly am nervous. I wouldn’t shop online and prefer to shop locally because of the recession. It is better for the economy.”

“I don’t shop online as I would rather see the product in the shop. I like browsing around the shops because it gets me out of the house!”

The Dundalk - Filipino community reacted swiftly to the crisis left in the wake of one of the most powerful storms recorded that ripped through the Philippines. Last weekend the 50 strong community began collecting clothes and food to send back to the Philippines. The images of the devastation caused by the typhoon has spurred on the international humanitari-

an effort. Ships have begun to deliver life saving supplies to the various islands that make up the Philippines, but the support needs to continue to avert further disaster. Ray Marmion has launched an appeal and has organised a one day drop-off shop on November 22 at 22 Clanbrassil St. Dundalk, formerly a Euro Saver shop across from the Bank of Ireland branch, from 9am to 6pm. “Millions of people have been displaced and they need help from the international community

to rebuild their lives”, said Ray. People are being asked to donate canned/tinned goods, biscuits, crackers, dried noodles, toiletries, tents and sleeping bags. At 370 miles in diameter, Typhoon Haiyan was one of the most powerful storms recorded to hit land and saw wind speeds of up to 235 miles per hour. 13 million people were affected by the typhoon which has killed approximately 4,000 people. 3 million people have been displaced and 2.5 million people are in need of food assistance.

Castletown School Share a Spare Bear Appeal News

smakołykami i łakociami. Pozdrawiam w imieniu Simul Polonia – Agnieszka Boniewicz

Castletown Girls School have ensured that there will be a happy Christmas for hundreds of children in Africa thanks to their ‘Share a Spare Bear’ appeal which is part of Damien Higgins annual shoebox appeal. Damien and his team of volunteers have been helping out some of the most underprivileged children in the world as part of the nationwide appeal which has been running for almost 15 years. The shoebox appeal was established to organise the distribution of presents to children in poor countries who might otherwise receive no Christmas gift. Castletown Girls School have been busy bringing in old teddy bears into the school

with schoolteacher Máire O’Rourke Curran and principal Marian McNally helping to organise the campaign. Máire who teaches Third Class girls says that the children’s response has been fantastic so far. “The response has been brilliant and the children here have made sure that the kids in Africa will have a lovely Christmas present to open on Christmas morning” she explained. “The whole school has took part from Junior Infants right up to Sixth Class so we’ve been inundated with teddy bears big and small over the last few weeks.” added Máire. Damien Higgins from the shoebox appeal says he has been overwhelmed by the response

in Brief Lourdes Committee

Dundalk Lourdes Invalid Committee are holding a Table Quiz in the Malthouse, Dublin Road this Friday night 22nd November at 8pm. All are welcome to a great event with prizes & craic galore. They are then holding their annual Sale of Work the following Sunday November 24 in the Order of Malta Hall Mill Street.

yet again this year. “The girls in Castletown School I believe have donated quite a number of teddy bears and I am very thankful again for their continued support. The first

container will be leaving Dublin for Africa on December 1 so as you can imagine we are very busy at the moment collecting parcels from all over town. This Friday is the fi-

nal day for getting boxes into that container so if anybody has any boxes they want to give us we would ask them to drop what they can into unit 2, Airmid House on the Avenue Road beside the Gym.

The local Campbell/Donnelly Sinn Fein Cumann will hold their latest beach clean up at Bellurgan on Saturday November 23. Meeting outside the Blue Anchor pub at 2pm. As usual non members will be most welcome to come along and give us a hand. Gloves/bags and bibs will be provided.

Kevin enjoying change of scene after 46 years at work From page 1 He says he will miss the people up in Clanbrassil St rather than the building itself. “It has been a bit weird making the move but it’s not so much the premises I miss rather than all the people I seen in Clanbrassil St on a regular basis over the years”, explained Kevin.

“I’ve made so many friends through working in the butchers and have attended too many wakes weddings and parties to remember through people I’ve known from coming into the shop. We’re not a million miles away from Clanbrassil St so we are still going to get some of the same customers that we have always

had but there will be some regular faces that we won’t be seeing again which is a shame”, laments Kevin. “But on the other side we’ll be seeing some brand new customers and making some new friends in Castletown so I’ll look forward to that” he adds. Having being in the butcher

business for 46 years Kevin has seen some changes in the industry over the years and a visit to the butcher is a more convenient experience for the shopper nowadays according to the Blackrock native. “Back when I first started you served the customer beef, chicken, pork and lamb and that was it. Nowadays there’s

everything you could imagine to help somebody in cooking a meal”, said Kevin. With almost a week spent in his new premises Kevin is delighted so far with the response from people in Castletown and says that he has no intention of hanging up his apron just yet as he looks forward to 50 years at work.

Young boxing stars display some very impressive form DEALGAN Amateur Boxing Club continued their successful season when five of their young stars competed in the finals of the Nine Counties in the National Stadium last week. A young boxer going from strength to strength is Conor Woods who claimed the 27kg Boy 1 title. Also at Boy 1, emerging talent Lee Mackin was victorious on both his bouts to take the 50kg title. Twelve year old Caoelan Travers making his competitive debut acquitted himself very well against his Wexford

Caoilan Travers, Martin O’Donnaicha, Conor Woods and Lee Mackin

opponent just falling short of the 57kg Boy 1 title. Another Dealgan boxer unfortunate not to be crowned champion was Boy 3 60kg, Emmet Kelly, when after defeating Drogheda’s John Maughan in the semi final, had to withdraw due to injury.

Dealgan ABC gained its third champion of the day when reigning Irish champion Martin O’Donacaicha proved too good for Luke Maguire of Holy Family Drogheda. The Dealgan coaches were delighted with all boxers performances

and feel they will be a force to be reckoned with in this year’s Leinster Championships. Another recent success was Dealgan’s new addition Rory Lavery, while giving a master class of technical boxing he became Leinster Intermediate Light Welterweight Champion. The Dealgan boxing club will be holding its annual texas holdem poker classic on Friday November 22 in the Lets Bingo bowling alley at 8pm with €1,000 prize money. For tickets contact 086 3748688. Tickets €20.

Old Dundalk Society winter lecture The efforts of local women in the War of Independence and the Civil War are the subject of the winter lecture by the Old Dundalk Society in the County Museum on November 20. Cumann na mBan in Louth 1914 to 1923 is the title of the lecture which will be delivered by Ailbhe Rogers from Togher.

At the height of the War of Independence (1919 - 1921) there were 21 branches of Cumann na mBan in Co Louth. The women were important in intelligence gathering and carrying dispatches between the different columns fighting in the War of Independence. With the rise of Civil War the

local Cumann was considered to be aligned with the anti treaty forces and in Louth they played an important part in the care of prisoners in the Old Dundalk Gaol, some of whom they managed to help break out through the infirmary. The lecture starts at 7pm.

St Peters Male Voice presents Local artists will exhibit their work at the Basement Gallery

The Basement Gallery in An Tain Theatre is to host ‘Response’, an exhibition of a collaborative work by seven local artists. Initially, each of the seven artists, Fiona Thornton, Orla Barry, Rachel Tinniswood, Gemma Callén, Sarah McKenna, Fiona Quigley and Mary Cowan, created a piece of work in their chosen medium which communicated their perception of ‘Internal’. This art work was then gifted to one of the artists who created five pieces in response to it. This resulted in an interesting dynamic and communication between the pieces, which mirrored the connection among the artists at Bridge Street Studios where the artists are based.

The exhibition was first featured in The Craft Granary in Cahir, Tipperary in October and travelled to Armagh before coming to Dundalk. The work has been well received by appreciative gatherings of artists, art enthusiasts and collectors. ‘Response’ will be exhibited in Basement Gallery in the Town Hall, Dundalk from November 18 to 29. It will be officially opened by Eileen Corcoran , The Arts and Culture Show, Dundalk FM, on Wednesday November 20 at 7.30pm when poet Barbara Smith will also read a poem commissioned for this exhibition. The artists will also give a talk about their work in Basement Gallery on Friday November 1.10pm to 1.40pm.
