Leinster glory for the mighty Gers By Paul Byrne
GERALDINES are celebrating the perfect Christmas present after becoming the toast of Louth sport by capturing the Leinster Intermediate Football title. The Blackrock/Haggardstown side turned in another magnificent performance in front of their ecstatic supporters to land the provincial title for the first time in their history. Geraldines captain Jim McEneaney summed up his feelings in the aftermath of Sundays heroic Leinster Intermediate Club Final by posting a message on Twitter stating ‘Nothing better than winning with your best mates! Best. Feeling. Ever. Leinster Champions!’ It was a glorious day not

Tribunal concludes that information came from within station The long-running Smithwick Tribunal into the killing of two senior RUC officers just across the border in Jonesboro in March 1989 has concluded that the IRA were assisted in their actions by information from someone in Dundalk Garda Station. Chief Superintendent Harry Breen and Superintendent Bob Buchanan were shot dead by the IRA after leaving a meeting at the station. Mr Justice Smithwick began investigating the shootings in 2006 with public hearings starting in 2011. His eagerly-awaited report stated that that he was satisfied that there was someone within Dundalk Garda Station assisting the IRA. However, the report concluded that the Tribunal has not uncovered direct evidence of collusion. “There is no record of a phone call, no traceable payment, no smoking gun,” the report stated. The findings led to Justice Minister, Alan Shatter, apologizing without reservation for any failings identified in the report on the part of the State or any of its agencies. Judge Smithwick found that Active Service Units of the IRA were active on the day in question and were on standby for an anticipated operation, before the arrival of the two officers at Dundalk Garda Station. He said that it seemed “beyond

doubt” that the IRA acquired information that the two officers had arrived at the station. He said he was satisfied that the evidence pointed to the fact that there was someone within the Garda station assisting the IRA. In his findings, Judge Smithwick said the “integrity of and confidence in An Garda Síochána can properly be maintained only if suggestions of inappropriate or illegal conduct by members are taken seriously, transparently and thoroughly investigated and, above all, not tolerated or ignored on the basis of some misguided sense of loyalty to the force or to its members”. He said the culture of failing to adequately address suggestions of wrongdoing, either for reasons of political expediency or by virtue of misguided loyalty, has been a feature of life in this State. He concluded that “too often that culture has resulted, some years later, after doubts, grievances and injustices have festered, in the setting up of investigations, commissions or Tribunals of Inquiry”. Judge Smithwick said the Tribunal sought to establish the truth and, in so doing, he said he hoped that it contributed one small part to changing that culture.

Victim of theft also picked up driving ban
A MAN who stated that he was moving his van after equipment had been stolen from it was convicted on a charge of drink driving at Dundalk District Court. Paul Murphy of 2 Oyster Bay, Carlingford, was disqualified for three years and fined €250 as a result of failing a breath test after being stopped by Gardai on November 3 at Dublin Rd, Dundalk. His solicitor stated that on the date in question he had been moving his van 500 yards across the street as it had been broken into and tools were taken. Insp Kevin Daly stated that he had no record of a theft being reported, but the solicitor stated that her client thought he had done so on night. The court heard that Mr Murphy had a previous conviction for drink driving in Newry. Judge William Hamill postponed the disqualification until February 1, 2014, to allow the defendant time to relocate to Dundalk.

Every little helps for charity
My son committed suicide three years ago and Aware do such great work in giving emotional and practical support to people who feel depressed or trying to cope with loss. “We’ve had various fundraisers throughout the year including cake sales, a cyclethon, tea and coffee mornings and
even a mock wedding and between them all we’ve raised €5500 so far for Aware”, she added. Margaret has been a driving force behind the fundraising efforts throughout the year and has made up a number of hampers which will be raffled off to lucky winners in
time for Christmas. The Christmas draw takes place on December 23. There is also a Christmas Tree of hope in the store and people are invited to write messages to loved ones which will then be put on to the tree. One of Margaret’s colleagues Sharon McGeough has also been busy helping out and she praised the great work being done. “I’m glad that Tesco have chosen Aware as their charity of choice for the past two years as they have been doing great work around the country. They provide great support to people and also run a ‘Beat the Blues’ course for secondary school students which helps kids recognise the symptoms of depression”, explained Siobhan.

Staff in Tesco’s in the Longwalk Shopping Centre have been busy all year raising funds for their chosen charity Aware with over €5000 collected thus far thanks to a variety of fundraisers held in 2013. Aware is the Tesco Charity of the Year Partner 2012 and 2013. Funds raised by the 15,000 Tesco staff across Ireland during the partnership will help to fund Aware’s secondary schools’ programme “Beat The Blues” and an adult programme, Life Skills. Margaret Woods, a staff member in Tesco, is delighted with how much money the store have raised for Aware so far. “Aware are a charity very close to my heart.

Early Christmas present for Post Polio group There was an early Christmas present for the Post Polio Support Group last week with an anonymous donor pledging a massive €400,000 donation to the group which will be paid out over a three year period. Brendan Moore who is a member of the Louth Post Polio Support Group was understandably delighted with the donation and thanked the anonymous person for what he described as an ‘extremely generous act’. “I received a call last week from a person who wishes to remain anonymous telling me that they wanted
to support the post polio support group by pledging €400,000 to us over a three year period. We wish to thank the anonymous donor who made a substantial donation to the group, on behalf of himself and a group of companies he is currently involved with. “The donation will help provide key services to the group as 100% of the donation can go directly to the post polio group. Give the Gift of a Lift this Christmas
Those intending to enjoy the Christmas festivities are being encouraged to be a lifesaver and “Gift a Lift” to friends and family. Louth County Council’s road safety campaign invites everyone to commit to giving a family member or friend one lift home, or, to organise a taxi for them
over the festive season using the specially designed Gift A Lift card. The gift card is available free to download at www.louthcoco.ie or can be collected from local authority offices, Motor Tax offices, public libraries and museums throughout the county. Road Safety Officer,
Angela Muckian, said: “Road users need to be extra careful at this time of year when roads are at their busiest. Act responsibly: don’t drive if you’ve been drinking. Stay alert, slow down and always wear a seatbelt. Anyone cycling or walking should always wear bright, reflective clothing. Don’t let your
actions bring tragedy to any family this Christmas. The Gift of a Lift could be a gift of life.” Inspector Paul Kiernan, Garda Road Traffic Corps, welcomed the initiative and advised people to plan their journeys in advance. He said: “We are reminding drivers to plan ahead when going out for a drink over the holiday period. Leave the keys at home, get a taxi or use public transport, designate a driver and take part in Louth County Council’s Gift A Lift initiative”. Last year An Garda Síochána detected 862 people driving under the influence so if you drink and drive this Christmas, prepare to be caught.

Panic led to crash with patrol car A Dundalk man who was less than a week away from completing a driving disqualification, panicked when he saw the Gardai and drove off before later colliding with two patrol cars. As a result, Andrew Thornton, of 60 Slieve Foy, Muirhevnamor, pleaded guilty to a series of motoring offences and an assault at Dundalk District Court. Insp Martin Beggy revealed that on May 20 this year that Dundalk Stadium celebrated a significant milestone when their meeting on Friday November 29 marked ten years since the venue first opened. Lots of regulars, new customers, shareholders, directors and many more arrived for the night’s entertainment of horse and greyhound racing followed by live music by the Long Riders. The cutting of the cake ceremony took place in the parade ring with Leo McCauley, Chairman and Jim Martin CEO of Dundalk Stadium. The cake was so large that the remainder was cut on Saturday night for our many regulars attending greyhound racing that night. A commemora-
the defendant encountered a man who is in a relationship with his ex girlfriend. He called the man an offensive name, grabbed him by the jumper and started punching him. On February 25 this year, Mr Thornton was observed in a car by Gardai who gave chase when he drove off. He drove through red lights and a stinger device was used at the Avenue Road roundabout. The defendant continued on to the
inner relief road where he performed a u-turn before driving at two patrol cars, causing €1,000 worth of damage. Barrister Irene Sands stated that the 30-year-old father of five was very close to completing a driving disqualification. She pointed out that Mr Thornton purchased a car which had been at the mechanic. He was driving it home when he encountered the Gardai and because he was
‘spooked’ he sped off. The defendant is currently serving a sentence and is not due for release until January 2016. As a result, Ms Sands asked the judge not to impose a sentence that would extend his time in prison. In relation to three of the offences Judge William Hamill imposed three-month sentences along with disqualifications of eight, seven and five years. Other matters were taken into account.

Lough Egish in County Monaghan was the venue for this year’s Four County Darts Challenge. With the Tuborg Dundalk and District Darts league going so well, the players involved had high hopes for success at inter county level. This annual event which saw the county panel assemble for the first time since the County Challenges was to be a yardstick for the upcoming All Irelands in February. The last minute drop out of the Meath team meant that a fourth team was made from substitutes from Cavan Monaghan and Louth. The Louth panel that travelled was: Owen Caffrey, Joe Finnegan, Daniel Dunn, John Don-
Hamilton Smyth and Robert Wallace
nell, Carl Thomas, John O’Brien, Ian Rooney, Alan Reenan, Gerry Rice, Hamilton Smith, Sean Kavanagh, Robert Wallace, Pat Nulty, Brendan McAllister, Brian Fitzpatrick, David Rath, Joe Englishby. Louth drew 6-6 with both Monaghan and Cavan and went into the last game against
the mixed team knowing they needed to win as many as possible as the competition finalists would be the two teams with the highest number of games won. Despite winning the match against the Mixed team the competition came down to one last pressure game with Alan Reenan needing to win
to secure Louth’s place in the final. After throwing a great game Alan was pipped at the post in what was a thrilling climax to a great days darts for the Louth Men. The results from Week 7 are as follows: Premier Division Stags Red 2, Avenue Eagles 4; Stags Black 3, The Stags 3; Commerical 1896 5, Jackies Army 1. First Division: Punters Dragons 1, Kehoes 5; Courtneys 2, Harrys Bar 4; Stags Green 4, Avenue Celtc 2; Oriel Active 3, Punters Sharks 3. Second Division: Fergusons Gyles Quay 4, Stags White 2; Punters Tigers 2, Johnny Masons 4; Castle Knights 3, Commerical Hawks 3.
Trying to deal with addictions A man who was serving a period of Community Service found himself back before Dundalk District Court to face similar public order charges. Emmet Grogan for Muchgrange, Greenore, pleaded guilty to the offences arising out of an incident in Carlingford on October 26, this year.
Insp Kevin Daly told the court that on that date, Gardai were called to PJ O’Hare’s pub where the defendant was being restrained by bouncers when they arrived. He was abusive to both Gardai and bouncers and was arrested, but afterwards was apologetic. Solicitor, Niall Lavery, noted that his client had previous con-
victions for similar offences in the same location, but was trying to deal with his addictions. He added that Mr Grogan’s focus was on getting into a residential programme. Judge William Hamill agreed that he needed treatment as he adjourned the case to December 11 for a Community Service report.

A book of condolences has been opened in Dundalk’s Town Hall to mark the death of South African leader Nelson Mandela. The book opened last Friday and will remain open until December 13. Cllr Eamonn O’Boyle the chair of Dundalk Town Council was at the Town Hall to open the condolence book and expressed his sadness upon hearing of Mandela’s death. “As chairman of Dundalk Town Council I believed it was appropriate that we open a book of condolences as a mark of respect to the great Nelson Mandela. He was a champion for achieving peaceful res-
olution to conflict and I believe him to be an inspirational example for all who live in violent situations”, explained Cllr O’Boyle. “He had a profound influence in overcoming bitterness produced by racial intolerance and was a champion of achieving respect, acceptance of all people irrespective of race, colour or creed”, added the Fine Gael councillor. Louth County Council chairman Cllr Declan Breathnach also opened a book of condolence for former South African president Nelson Mandela on behalf of Louth County Council. The book will be located at County Hall and members of the public are invited to come along and sign it. Both books will be open between 9am and 5pm until Friday evening. Nelson Mandela died in his home last Thursday after a long illness.

Making effort to cut down on drinking A MAN who is making efforts to cut down on his drinking has been given a chance to avoid prison after the judge recommended he serve 100 hours Community Service in lieu of three months in prison. Ciaran Halligan of 78 Castleross, Castletown Road, Dundalk, admitted a charge of a threat to damage property at Distillery Lane on July 10 this year. Insp Kevin Daly told
the court that on that date, Gardai observed the defendant trying to break into property with half his torso through a window. He was drunk and shouting at a woman inside the house. The occupant, who was Romanian and didn’t understand what the man was saying, was terrified by the incident. Solicitor, Frank McDonnell, stated that the 33-year-old

defendant had four previous convictions and that he got into trouble when drinking. He added that Mr Halligan has very little recollection of the incident. Mr McDonnell pointed out that his client has cut down on his drinking considerably since the incident. Judge William Hamill adjourned the case to February 19 for a Community Service report.
Dundalk Chamber of Commerce has welcomed the Town Council’s decision to once again offer Christmas shoppers the bonus of half price parking. This means that up to January 4 parking for one hour is just 50 cent. Paddy Mathews President of the Chamber and BIDS representative, Fiona Cunningham, both believe that this will boost business in the town both before Christmas and in the important postChristmas sales. Speaking at the launch Paddy stressed the need for all to support each other by spending money locally

this Christmas and in general. “The theme chosen by the Town Council was “Shop Local”. If we all spend money in local shops it creates jobs in those shops. The employees can and will then spend their wages in Dundalk which
generates more jobs”, he explained. The town has really got into the swing of Christmas this year with the phenomenal Santa run last week organised by the Chamber which will be followed up next week by the Charity lunch.

Magnificent Geraldines enjoy Leinster Championship win
From page 1 There were joyous scenes in the immediate aftermath of the final whistle as the Gers became only the second team from Louth (Dundalk Gaels being the first) to win a Leinster club championship. Geraldines club chairman,
Padraig McDonnell, was understandably ecstatic in the wake of the club’s greatest ever victory and praised the supporters for the noise and passion they displayed in Parnell Park last Sunday. “It was a magnificent display by the team. The players,
coaching staff and Eamonn McEneaney the manager deserve huge credit and I’m delighted for the supporters who made the journey up to Parnell Park. We had two full busloads travel to Dublin as well as plenty who drove up in their cars and they filled
the whole stand and supported their team brilliantly”, enthused Padraig. “It was nerve-wracking in the second half and we were all on edge when Naomh Olaf brought it back to a point but they missed a great goal chance to go ahead and
we went straight up the other end and scored a point which really put us in the driving seat. I was especially delighted to see the two teenagers, Josh and Dara, come on at the end and score two important points. “We had a fantastic night
back at the clubrooms and the whole area of Haggardstown and Blackrock have been celebrating the win. I think we fed 150 in the hall on Sunday night and the younger crowd headed off to Blackrock in the early hours to continue the celebrations”,
added Padraig. The victorious Gers can now relax and have a wellearned rest as they take in their excellent victory before preparing themselves for the All-Ireland Semi Final clash against Truagh from Monaghan in late January.

Wheelchair access improvements recommended By Niamh Kirk
A NUMBER of recommended improvements to the roads and footpaths in Dundalk town centre have been submitted to the Town Council following a report into wheelchair access by two local men. The in-depth report takes Dundalk streetby-street and identifies the precise locations along roads and footpaths that wheelchair users suffer difficulty or discomfort due to the lay out or condition of the path.
A total of 66 issues were identified, some of which are brought about due to damage caused by daily use and some that show previous road works that fail to comply with regulations. While the report says that some concerns should be ongoing such as road and footpath maintenance, some issues were identified as in urgent need of attention. Among the recommendations that needed the most attention are road to footpath height
differences at all existing disabled parking bays which were found to not comply with building regulations. Along the length of Anne Street there is no safe crossing point for wheelchair users. The report recommends removing cycle lanes to allow for safer crossings and to remove damaged concrete slabs that are a danger to all users of footpaths. The research was conducted by John Morgan a Dundalk based-wheelchair user. In the report John de-
scribes the problems he faces with getting around Dundalk due to the condition of roads and facilities. One of the reoccurring issues are the height differences between roads and pavements which can cause discomfort to one’s neck when crossing the road and contributes to the wear of the wheelchair. “I can appreciate that some of the height differences quoted in the report, for example 25mm, to the ablebodied person may

Drink didn’t agree with driver
A DUNDALK man who ‘drank something that didn’t agree with him’ failed a roadside breath test after being stopped by Gardai, pleaded guilty to a drink driving charge at Dundalk District Court on Wednesday. Michael Ryan of 15 Rockmount Gardens,
Carrick Road, Dundalk, was stopped by Gardai on May 28, 2013, at Seatown Place in Dundalk. Solicitor, Frank McDonnell, stated that his 77-year-old client had little memory of the incident after drinking something that didn’t agree with him.

seem extremely trivial or small but to a wheelchair user it can be equivalent to climbing Everest,” said John. The gullies along footpaths are also a source of considerable
discomfort. “It must be remembered that a significant proportion of wheelchair users may have obtained their disability as a result of an accident such as a car crash thereby leaving
their spine very weak particularly at the base of the neck. “Therefore constantly traversing these gullies causes whip-lash of the neck resulting in significant discomfort,” John
stated. The issues were raised with Dundalk Town Council to see if there are any of the issues that can be addressed within the current budget constraints.

Failed to inform Gardai of address
A man who was in the process of renovating a house pleaded guilty to a charge of failing to inform Gardai of his name and address at Dundalk District Court. Thomas Gerard Callan of 21 Barrack St, Dundalk, was convicted and fined €200 by Judge William Hamill after being charged with an offence on April 10 this year. Solicitor, Conor Breen, told the court that his client had been living with his
mother in Barrack St but had been rented a property that needed renovating. As a result, he spent an occasional night in the property. Mr Breen stated that if the charge had been contested, it would have been disputed that he had actually moved. He added that Mr Callan was unemployed and relied on social welfare and rent allowance. Insp Kevin Daly stated that he had no evidence to dispute the defendant’s claims.

Mazda have announced details of the new Mazda3 hatchback and fastback (salon) which will go on sale early next year. The new Mazda3 line-up comprises 21 hatchback and 15 fastback models – the hatchback features eight diesel models, where the saloon has five diesel versions. There are five trim levels. All models benefit from Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) which helps to reduce or prevent low-speed collisions by automatically applying the brakes if the driver fails to act, Hill Hold Assist (HHA) to prevent roll back and internet connectivity with ‘Aha’ and ‘Stitcher’ app integration. Standard Equipment includes, : 16-inch alloy wheels, air

conditioning, power-folding heated mirrors, leather steering wheel, trip computer, radio/CD with six speaker audio system, 7-inch TFT colour touch screen, USB/iPod connectivity and Bluetooth® hands-free system. The new Mazda3 comes with an impact-absorbing lightweight SKYACTIV-Body and SKYACTIV-Chassis. Around 60 per cent of the body is made from high and ultra-high tensile steels. That’s up from 50 per cent in its predecessor, making the all-new Mazda3’s lighter yet some 30 per cent stiffer than the previous model. This has helped to improve passive safety protection, which is back up by a range of sensor-based active safety equipment and technology.
