THE dream of Louth GAA establishing its home base at at a state-of-the-art stadium in DkIT are over after it was confirmed on Monday night that the project has been scrapped. Louth County Board revealed the news at their monthly meeting on Monday night, while at the same time DkIT released a statement on the matter with rising financial costs as the reason behind the decision. Louth GAA will now look to redevelop the current County Grounds in Drogheda as an alternative, after three years spent trying to get the project off the ground. The planned new ground was to hold 12,000 which could have been increased to
15,000 at a later date. It was to include 4,000 seats, floodlights, dressing rooms and indoor facilities. The original plan envisaged Louth playing their 2014 National League games at the new venue. From a DkIT perspective, the new venture would have had the effect of improving facilities for students in the college and turn the college into a centre of excellence for sport. The cost was expected to be €6m, with DkIT providing €3m and Louth GAA and Croke Park €1.5m each. However, delegates at Monday night’s meeting were told that the costs had spiralled and the project was no longer being pursued. Continued on page 10

Retired solicitor fails in bid over drink driving charge A retired solicitor found himself back in court where he failed in a bid to have a drink driving conviction struck out. Frank McArdle of 8 Distillery Mews, Distillery Lane, Dundalk, argued that he had made a genuine effort to provide a full breath specimen and in light of a previous ruling, the case should be dismissed as it was not his fault that a speci-

men had not been produced. However, Judge Patrick Clyne, rejected the submission and in convicting Mr McArdle he imposed a four year disqualification and a €600 fine. Dundalk District Court heard from Gda Freda McCague that on Thursday February 23, 2012, she was on patrol with Gda Damien Fanning when she observed a black BMW approaching the patrol car in the wrong direction on Distillery Lane. The car was being driven by the defendant and when speaking to him she noted a smell of intoxicating liquor and that his speech was slurred. He said he hadn’t consumed alcohol. After failing a roadside breath test, Mr
McArdle was arrested on suspicion of drink driving. At Dundalk Garda Station, the defendant provided one breath specimen but was unable to provide a second in the required time despite making four attempts. As a result a reading of ‘specimen incomplete’ was returned. She stated that Mr McArdle said in reply that “I did my very best and I will go to the doctor tomorrow to see why this happened”. In reply to a question from defence solicitor, Dermot Lavery, Gda McCague added that the defendant had made a genuine attempt to provide a sample and it was a case of failure rather than refusal. She pointed out that at that time it was not a requirement to offer the
defendant the opportunity to provide a blood or urine sample. The Officer in Charge on the night in question, told the court that the defendant had been advised of his entitlement to contact a doctor but this was not requested at the time. He pointed out that the defendant was aware of his entitlement as he had signed to confirm that this offer had been made. Mr Lavery argued that his client had made a genuine attempt to provide a sample and that he should not have been asked to so something that he couldn’t do. Although Judge Clyne agreed that the defendant had done his best to provide a sample, the court had not been presented with a reason for the failure.

Members of the Ardee Concert Band enjoying the Halloween celebrations
Zaopatrzeni w rowery, kaski, suchy prowiant i napoje
stawiliśmy się wczesnym rankiem przy Roden House w Dundalk. Żeby za bardzo się nie zmęczyć do Carlingford zawiózł nas bus. Stamtąd dopiero mieliśmy ruszyć rowerami do Dundalk.
Ridleys gear up for The Gathering
To tie in with the national Initiative, the management of Ridleys decided to hold a reunion/gathering of current and former members of staff on Friday November 8. People are asked to gather in The Garden first from 9pm, where the party will then proceed later on in the night in to Ridleys to re-live the memories and dance the night away. So if you were part of the Ridleys team, whether you worked in the bar or niteclub as floorstaff, barstaff, DJ, Light Jockey, Security, Toilet attendants, cloakroom or admissions desk; in the kictchen, office or off-sales – you are all more than welcome, and it would be great to see you all.
rowerach. Edyta Szymanek Już w najbliższy piątek Klub Młodych ‘Pajęczyna’ organizuje swoje pierwsze wielkie przyjęcie – halloween disco dla wszystkich klubów Foroige w Co. Dundalgan Press classics now available for download The 150 year old Dundalgan Press publishing company is taking new steps and embracing the digital medium this week by making the Tempest’s Memories Dundalk at Work Series available for download. The four of the books, The Shoe Industry, The Tobacco Industry, The Engineering Industry and Dundalk Caught on Camera are now available for download in 51 countries. Dundalgan Press, Managing Director Sandra Dowdall said “We are so proud
of the work we do in publishing with over 150 years history, but we also realise that we must move with the times and our Tempest Memories Collection becoming iBooks is a perfect example of how we can do this. Originally the collection of books ran as limited edition print runs which were found to be being shipped across the globe to the Irish Diaspora from Dundalk. iCreate’s Founder and Managing Director Clive Friary spoke of the process
involved in bringing the four books to their new online status. “The ‘Dundalk at Work’ books and ‘Dundalk Caught on Camera’ are amazing books and they are fabulous in their traditional form but an amazing market has opened up in iBooks and iCreate along with Dundalgan Press saw the potential in making these titles available online for the many people who did not get the opportunity to secure a book during the limited edition runs.”

A woman who continued to be aggressive after being arrested on public order charges tore the shirts of two Gardai at Dundalk Station. Alice Mallon, 30 Glenmore Park, Muirhevnamor, Dundalk, pleaded guilty to public order charges at Dundalk District Court arising out of the incident on July 2, 2012. Insp Kevin Daly told the court that on that night Gardai were called to a row in Francis St where they found
the defendant in an intoxicated state. She was abusive and failed to leave the scene. After being arrested she was taken to the station where he tore the two shirts, valued at €12 and made an attempt to spit at a Garda. Solicitor, Dermot Lavery, revealed that life had not been easy for the 46-year-old mother of five as he hadn’t known anything other than financial hardship. He added that she apologised for any indignity suffered by
the Gardai, and pointed out that the manner of her arrest was part of her punishment. “This is not a crime without punishment already as Ms Mallon suffered quite badly in that she was pepper sprayed during her arrest. I am not saying that it was inappropriate, but it is a frightful thing to suffer and has consequences for days after”, added Mr Lavery. Judge Patrick Clyne heard that she was a woman of limited means but felt that a
contribution should be made to the community as an indication of her remorse. “There are people in this parish who are not worrying about putting bottles of stout on the table, but rather milk and bread. I am thinking of a contribution from drinking money as that is what got in trouble on this occasion”, he sated. Judge Clyne stated that a contribution of €100 would be appropriate as he adjourned the case to December 4.
Rice serves his best at Mayo classic Last weekend saw two Louth County players and Commercial Club team mates travel to Castlebar County Mayo to take on Irelands Finest. John O’Brien and Gerry Rice both arrived in Mayo on the Saturday and it wasn’t long before they were on the practice board preparing for the Mayo Darts Open. The Louth Contingent grew later in the evening when the Connolly clan arrived in the form of Dad Dermot, and the dynamic duo of Robert and Mark. The competition got underway and despite hitting a 180 with his first three darts
John O’Brien was convincingly beaten by James Quigley form Mayo. Meanwhile the Young guns of Robert and Mark were going well , sadly Robert was another early faller while Mark made it to the last eight of the competition. This left Gerry rice as the only Louth man flying the flag in the competition and he made sure it flew high right up to the final. Gerry faced the provisional Irish Number One Glenn Spearing from Dublin but was narrowly beaten 6-5 after agonizingly missing double 16 for Gerry Rice accepts his trophy the match.

Cobra Kan Karate and Kickboxing Club residing at the St.Gerard’s Hall recently travelled to Taranto, Italy to attend the World Karate and Kickboxing Championships. Nine members of the club ranging from 11 to over 35 all did themselves and their club proud with excellent displays all round. Erin O’Connell, Yan Fitzgerald and Gerard Conlon made their World Championship debuts and all performed with great credit gaining valuable experience which will surely stand to them for future competitions. Next up for Cobra Kan was another young member from the club, Tiernan Weldon. Tiernan fought very well and made his way through to the semi-finals beating a Canadian along the way. Tiernan was narrowly beaten in the semi-finals by a very experienced Italian fighter but he managed to secure himself a bronze medal. Patrick Mulligan started his Champion-

Patrick put up a great fight and gained respect of all around him. After a day of rest Patrick competed in the points section where after completing the opening rounds beating
a German he just missed out on a medal in the semi-finals defeated by a Canadian. Martina Goss stormed her way to the final, meeting the Canadian woman who knocked her out of a medal position last year. Martina put up a brave fight and snatched up the gold

the scoreboard from the previous fights. Ireland took the gold due to the amount of points Megan scored in her fight. Catherine Brady the three-times World Champion regained her title this year to make it four times World Champion. Catherine met an Italian fighter in the final who had the support of the home crowd behind her. This made no difference to Catherine as she kept her cool and showed her experience under pressure. Catherine regained her title and took home the gold. The final fighter to grace the mats was David Matthews who has represented Ireland for a number of years, reaching final for the last four years and being narrowly defeated each year. David got to the final this year and took home a well deserved gold. David’s fight was well matched but David out skilled his opponent in the end. David also came home with a silver medal from his team continuous event.
Break for darts
The Committee of the TUBORG DDDL decided that the Halloween weekend should be left a fixture free week and this gave the committee the chance to analyse some of the scores. The statisticians have shown that only nine players throughout the league have won both of their first two games 2-0 while only five players have won their first two matches 2-1. This shows that the league is very competitive. The highest finish so far in the league is by Premier player Neil Barry who took out 144 (T20 T20 D12). Mickey Fee from the first division team of Harry’s Bar is next with 129. The total number of “180” hit in two weeks of darts is eight with Paddy Gibney from the Stags Red hitting two in the one game. Paddy also holds the unfortunate honour of being the only player to have hit 180 and lost his game. This figure of eight is spread across all three divisions which once again is a great indication of the standard that the league is helping to produce.

Final whistle blows on stadium By Eunan Whyte
From page 1 The alternative is to redevelop the Drogheda grounds in three phases which will see a new pitch being developed and terracing to cater for 6,000 opposite the main stand. It will also include floodlights. Work on the ground could start early in 2014 and be fully completed within six years. The estimated cost is €3.7m which would be shared by Louth GAA and Croke Park. The statement from DkIT stated: “The Louth GAA County Board and
The prosposed Drogheda redevelopment
DkIT can confirm that efforts between the two parties to construct a new stadium facility at the DkIT campus for the purposes of both organisations have ended cordially. “Financial Constraints have been cited and this announcement brings to an end three years of work examining the feasibility of a
project which also involved the GAA at national level. The introduction of the possibility of the purchase of the JJB Sports Complex for DkIT in the middle of this process introduced delays and additional complicating factors around assessing the suitability of co-locating the proposed stadi-
um adjacent to the JJB. In announcing the decision to end the project DkIT President Denis Cummins stated: “While I am extremely disappointed that this flagship project will not now be proceeding I know that both parties worked tirelessly to try to achieve it. However, I realise it is not financially possible to deliver the project at the current time and it is best for all parties now that we bring certainty to the situation by formally suspending the project.” Louth County Board Chairman Padraic O
Connor stated “ Louth GAA / Croke Park Officials & DKIT Board members have worked on this project for at least 3 years and it is very disappointing for all concerned that due to issues which involved financial constraints we cannot proceed with the proposed stadium. We regret this position but The Louth GAA Executive will be presenting an alternative development plan to our County committee to ensure that Louth GAA will have a County Grounds which will meet our immediate requirements”.
Ashamed man is in much healthier condition A man who was involved in a series of public order matters expressed shame for his actions that included trying to headbutt a Garda and assaulting a paramedic. Charles McDowell of 26 Slieve Foy Park, Muirhevnamor, who pleaded guilty to a number of offences at Dundalk District Court, told the court that he had since given up drink and has returned to education.
The court heard that on July 28, 2012, Gardai were called to a domestic incident in Laurel Brook Gardens where they found the defendant who was very intoxicated and aggressive. He made an attempt to headbutt a Garda during the course of his arrest. On September 29 he was arrested at Slieve Foy Park after Gardai were called to the scene, and on November 18, 2012, he
was arrested following a domestic disturbance at Mullaharlin Park. On May 11 this year he was arrested at the Fairways Hotel after Gardai found him to be intoxicated and aggressive while he also refused to leave the scene. The court also heard that Gardai received a call from ambulance personnel on July 12 last year and attended Beechmount
Drive where the defendant had pushed a paramedic out of a house. No injuries were caused. Solicitor, James MacGuill, who has previous public order convictions, is no longer drinking and is in a much healthier condition. He added that the 22-year-old single man is ashamed of his conduct. Judge Patrick Clyne imposed 75 hours Community Service in lieu of three months in prison.
Countdown on for Santa Run By Niamh Kirk
The countdown is on to the this year’s Santa Run, which is set to be the biggest yet as more than 2,000 people have already signed up to take part. However, there is an added agenda to this Santa Run because if more than 4,000 Santas participate it will be a world record breaker. Participants could be giving themselves, and each, other a truly unique Christmas present if they find themselves with a place in the Guinness Book of World records. Numbers for the mile run are swelling with more than 100 registering in the Marshes Shopping centre this weekend. The event is attracting teams from local businesses and charities as well as classes from local schools and families. It is a fun run that even young children can take part in and many are. People run, walk and some younger participants will make their way in a buggy . Some of the town Transition Year Classes are getting involved and they stand to get an add-

ed prize as the best TY class in the Santa Run will win a day out to County Quads. The run which, was launched by sports stars Robert and David Kearney, Paddy Keenan and Stephen Kenny, is set to take place on November 29. This year there are some new additions to those running as the ‘Santas.’ Four reindeer will lead the Santas around the track which begins at Redemptorist Church on St Alphonsus Rd at 6.30pm and finishes at the Demesne. The proceeds will go to help more than 100
local charities including SOSAD, Men’s Sheds, Louth Hospice, SNAP and the Lordship Respite Centre. To register only costs €10 per person or €25 per family, this enables you to participate in the book of records, and also provides you with a Santa Suit. The Santa Suits are due to be delivered to town on Thursday morning and participants are being reminded to pick them up between November 20 and 26 at a pop-up shop in Market Square. The Santa Run is also the opening event of this year’s Festival of Light
and Culture which takes place from November 29 and 30. Although this year there will be no precession of light, Dundalk’s christmas lights will be officially turned on in Market Square immediately after the run. The event will be boosted by music and street performers. You can register online for The Santa Run at Dundalk.ie , at the stand in the Marshes Shopping Centre and through Dundalk Chamber of Commerce. Over to you Question: Are you behind the appointment of Martin O’Neill and Roy Keane?
Ciaran McLoughlin
Denis McKenna
Paul McGreevy
I’m in two minds about it I suppose. I’m not so sure about Roy Keane coming in but I think Martin O’Neill is a decent choice.
I think they should have given O’Neill the job on his own. I’m not sure what Roy Keane’s role will be but I definitely would have preferred Martin on his own.
I’m willing to give it a chance. I think they might actually work well together. It’s definitely an interesting appointment anyway.
Louth dreams set to come true From Page 1 It began last year when Gerry was watching Christmas Wishes a TV show which depicted five children with life threatening illness having their wishes come true. He was touched by their reactions and began planning to raise funds to help children in a similar situation from Co Louth. The main fundraising effort was the raffle for the new car, however Gerry also hosted a number of events to boost the flow of funds into the pot. As well as a table quiz in the Fane Bar, Dundalk’s Got Talent, a Night at the Races and the final show, the Legend of Luke Kelly, all helped raise €22,545.50 for the Make a Wish Foundation. Gerry and some of the 25
Car winner Elaine McGeough accepts her prize volunteers who have helped him over the past few months were present when the keys were handed over to a thrilled Elaine on Monday afternoon. Elaine said that she was delighted to have won. Her ticket was pulled on Friday night in the final event of the campaign in the Fairways Hotel and the phoned her in front of
the live audience to give her the good news. Gerry was also very happy with the result and the amount raised to help the children. He had met some if the children who have had wishes granted and said he glad to see them have a dream come true. “ We were very grateful to everyone who helped and supported the effort,” said Gerry.

Geraldines GFC Night at the Dogs The Geraldines GFC Benefit Night took place on Saturday night and fortunately the weather did not deter the supporters from turning out in force. The ‘Night at the Dogs’ fundraiser featured 12 locally sponsored greyhound races and a raffle followed by live music from the Long Riders. The Geraldines GFC have been actively involved in the promotion of Gaelic Football in the parish of Haggardstown & Blackrock for more than 100 years. During that period, successive generations of club members have worked

The Geraldine’s club provides playing facilities for underage boys and girls free of charge and the club is an important contributor to the life and wellbeing of the local community. Rough Sleeper Count to take place Louth County Council is to lead the now annual count of rough sleepers in the North East, comprising Counties Louth, Cavan and Monaghan. The count will take place on Tuesday night, November 12. The count will commence at midnight and see teams visit locations where there may have been historical or current rough sleeping. Any member of the
public who is aware of someone sleeping rough or locations where they believe this to be occurring is asked to contact Homeless Services on email homeless@louthcoco.ie before November 11. The aim of the count, which forms part of a national initiative, is to allow local authorities and other agencies to develop appropriate supports to encourage those
sleeping rough to engage and move into more stable, longer-term accommodation. Joe McGuinness, Chair of the North East Regional Consultative Forum said: “It is important in planning our future provision of emergency accommodation and support services, that we have an accurate picture of who is sleeping rough. This count will allow us to better
coordinate services and use resources to best effect.” “There is a very specific definition of rough sleeping so it excludes those in hostel or other short-term accommodation. Our specific interest for the November 13 count is to accurately track the number of people sleeping outside or in buildings, vehicles or structures not designed for habitation.”

The Band of Friends is not a tribute to Rory more a celebration of his life and music as the band consists of musicians who played with Rory throughout his career. There are many tribute bands playing the music of Rory Gallagher, some good some not so good but what they are doing is keeping the music of this great musician alive. Rory’s music reached a massive audience from Norway to Spain, from Japan to the USA, covering all parts of the globe and producing some of the greatest rock/blues albums of the 60s, 70s and the 80s. Sadly we lost Rory on June 14 1995, to his devoted fans and followers this was the ultimate tragedy. The bands consists of the following members:
Gerry McAvoy: (Bass Guitar) played with Rory for 20 years: from 1971 to 1991 and because of this has a great insight into the man and his music. Gerry played on every album Rory ever made. He also wrote a book following his career which was published in 2005 Ted McKenna: (Drums) played with Rory from 1977 to 1981. Ted is a rock drummer’s drummer. He has played with numerous rock legends and has recorded some of the top albums of our time. Marcel Scherpenzeel: (Guitar) grew up with Rory’s music and Gerry is quoted as saying “This is the closest guitarist to Rory you will ever hear”. Marcel still plays with his band Wolfpin. So as you can see this is not a tribute band. This is THE BAND.

After several years of taking numerous national and world karate titles under the world governing body the ‘World Karate Confederation’, local Karate Club ‘Dealgan Wadokai’ recently decided to make the transition to compete in the larger of the two world governing bodies the ‘World Karate Federation’. In what has proven to be a successful transition the club has already taken numerous titles in International events, National events, the All Ireland Wado League, and the National championships. However the real acid test would be to see how well they would perform at a high level prestigious European event such as the ‘FEW Wadokai European Championships’ which were being held in Lisbon, Portugal recently. Having already competed in a similar event the ‘FWE European Wado Cup ‘ in Germany a few years previously they knew what to expect and were up for the challenge. Following a rigorous selection

process of five rounds of league competition over an 8 week period , two of the girls - Rachel and Shannon NíDhonnachadha were selected by the national selector and head coach Derek Desmond 6th Dan JKF to form part of the 19 strong Ireland squad selected from across the 32 counties. Rachael secured bronze in the under 16s Technical Karate after four rounds of competition and bronze in individual Fighting after three rounds, making light work of her Hungarian and
Spanish opponents. She then lost her last bout against a much larger Dutch opponent in the semi finals. Her sister Shannon fighting in the under 18s fought exceptionally well and faced a tough and highly respected Macedonian opponent in a contest which would decide who would take the bronze and despite a spirited and skilful performance Shannon was unlucky on this occasion to miss out on the Bronze medal by a mere one point margin.
