Dundalk is celebrating a sporting hat-trick after two major projects were announced last week, along with further good news on an international event next year. All going to plan Dundalk will host Ireland’s only elite standard velodrome and the world’s first all weather, flood lit turn hurdles track by 2016. In addition, Dundalk has already been selected to host a stage of the 2014 Giro d’Italia and it was announced that the sprint in the town will be shown live on television. The green light was given to Ireland’s first international standard velodrome which is to be established in Dundalk town after a 150 year-long lease for the land in Muirhevenamor to the track was

approved at Dundalk Town Council meeting on Tuesday. Cuchulainn Cycling club who are behind the project have already received planning permission for the 250m outdoor track and a separate 306m BMX track. The track should attract some of Ireland’s competitive cyclists to practice here as many currently travel to cycling centres in the UK to train. There are already hopes that elite Irish athletes will use the track to train and perhaps make their way from Dundalk to the Olympics. Although both tracks will initially be open-air there are already plans to roof the cycling track in the next phase of the development. Younger members of the community Continued on Page 11

Adele Clune and Margaret Conlon with pupils from Realt na Mara Student Council

By Paul Byrne There will be plenty of Christmas cheer for a number of people around Dundalk thanks to the extraordinary response to Reált na Mara’s St Vincent de Paul Christmas food appeal. The halls of Realt Na Mara

resembled Santa’s Grotto on Friday morning with rows and rows of beautifully arranged Christmas hampers laid out waiting to be collected by St Vincent de Paul. Towards the end of November the Reált na Mara student council put up a

notice saying that they would start going around the classrooms daily, collecting items for the Christmas Hampers in aid of St Vincent de Paul. The collection ended last Friday and according to student co-ordinator Continued on Page 4

Traders vote to continue BIDS initiative 2

By Niamh Kirk

The businesses of Dundalk last week voted to retain the town centre management BIDS scheme for a further five years. The local businesses have agreed to pay an additional percentage on top of their usual rates which will help fund the operation of the TCCM offices whose objectives are to seek investment, create an events calendar, market the town and ensure a safe environment for business development. The Dundalk BIDS has already been in operation for more than five years and has organised the Jedward and Nathan Carter concerts to Dundalk as well as last year’s Ice skating rink and the Festival of Light and Culture. The decision by traders has been welcomed by BIDS Chairman, Brian O’Neill. “The vote in favour of Dundalk BIDS means we can now work together in the five years ahead for the betterment of our town, its businesses and its people. For BIDS to be the best it can be we need to get as many people as possible involved. “Let us come and share our ideas and thoughts and let us help each

other”, he said. “Now that BIDS has been approved they plan to review their operations over the past five years and how they can best support retail in Dundalk and make it more inclusive going into the future. “We will be listening to all the comments by the local retailers, make the changes they are looking for and identify how we can help traders and help the town itself”, said Brian. Fiona Cunningham from the BIDS office said “We have had a tremendous few weeks in Dundalk with Dundalk on Ice, the Festival of Lights and of course the amazing response to the Santa Fun Run. These events demonstrated what we can do. They are not down to one person but a fantastic community of which Dundalk BIDS plays a vital role.” In the proposal which was approved by a considerable majority, BIDS has committed to deliver comprehensive data for the local authorities and incoming businesses, to raise and improve Dundalk’s public profile, identify gaps in the diversity of businesses and seek to fill them and rejuvenate the town centre.

Conor is joined by friends from other nationalities on Blackrock beach in preparation for The Scattering

Conor gets ready for The Scattering ST STEPHEN’S Day in Blackrock just wouldn’t be the same without a piece of Conor Hughesinspired madness and this year sees that tradition continue with the introduction of ‘The Scattering’. Conor’s Christmas capers on the beach opposite his music store in Blackrock have become the stuff of legend and have been taking place for some 20 years raising countless thousands for children’s charities in the process. Over the years Conor has dressed up as Charlie Chaplin, Thierry Henry’s hand and even King Kong in what is Crosscause’ biggest fundraiser of the year. This year sees ‘The Scattering’ coming to Blackrock from Noon on

come to attend for what is sure to be a fun packed day. The Scattering’ takes it’s inspiration from ‘The Gathering’ and as Conor explains all funds raised on the day will go to the Crosscause charity which has been helping the people of Romania, Moldova and Ghana for over ten years. “As usual we are having our annual Crosscause St Stephen’s Day fundraiser which will take place on Blackrock strand starting at Noon. “This year we are having our own playful take on The Gathering where we will dress up and celebrate different nationalities from around the world. “Everybody is invited to come along and join in what promises to be

and appreciation of international identities”, explained Conor. “There will be music and hot drinks served all day and an invitation to all cultures to come along and join in the fun of ‘The Scattering’. “Last year we had a great day on the beach and managed to raise over €5000 and as always we are very grateful for the continued support we get in the community”, he added. As always there is a purpose behind the shenanigans and this year all money raised will go towards the completion of an orphanage in Ghana, West Africa. All money raised by Crosscause will in its entirety reach the less well off in Ghana with all Crosscause volunteers

Pupils bring Christmas cheer to Dundalk From page 1 Adele Clune, the response to the appeal was phenomenal. “The pupils have really answered St Vincent de Paul’s appeal for food this year and the student council have collected a

huge amount of food for the needy in the area. I really have to commend them all for their generosity and enthusiasm with this appeal. “The Student Council also deserve a lot of praise for the amount of

Pupils are top of healthy eating class Faughart NS students have proved they are top of the class when it comes to healthy eating after being recognised with a Healthy Eating Certificate from the HSE. Teachers, students and parents have been busy working together to raise awareness of healthy eating, culminating in a special event in the school hall, where children showcased their healthy eating project and art work. The school recently reviewed its Healthy Eating Policy and both parents and children were enthusiastic and supportive in implementing any changes. As part of the HSE

Gabriel Cleary, Brogan Kelly, Anna McArdle, Daniel Ntemuse and Luke Hilliard

Dublin NE Health Promoting schools initiative, teachers have been busy covering various aspects of healthy eating within their classes, focussing on the food pyramid, the digestive

system and oral health. Some children were involved in baking fresh brown bread, while others carried out experiments to see how much oil was in certain foodstuffs and how much

sugar is contained in confectionary. Parents were invited to learn more about the importance of breakfast, healthy lunchbox options and how to avoid acid attacks on young teeth in talks given by Liz O’Reilly, (Health Education Officer - Oral health) and Sally-Ann McLoughlin (Senior Community Dietician). A student, dressed as a carrot, was more than happy to receive, on behalf of the school, a Healthy Eating Certificate from Monica McCrory, Senior Health Promotion Officer. According to Acting Principal, Anne Cumiskey, the initiative was a huge success.

Judge warns man about his drinking A man who punched a Garda after being asked to leave a takeaway outlet was warned that he would find himself in more trouble if he didn’t address his issues with drink. Roy Byatt of Rockfield Court, Dundalk, apologised for his behaviour at Park St on April 24 2013. Insp Martin Beggy told the court that on that date, Garda attended a takeaway outlet after staff had brought to their attention that fact that Mr Byatt was

on the premises and causing a nuisance. He was asked to leave and failed to do so, while he was very aggressive and abusive while using expletives. He told the Garda that he knew where he lived and that he was going to get him. As the Garda held the door to allow the defendant to leave, Mr Byatt punched him on the face as he was leaving. The Garda was sore as a result but not injured. Solicitor, James MacGuill, stated that his 38-year-old client

understands he should abstain from alcohol, but on the day in question he fell into company with an individual and had too much to drink. He added that his client wouldn’t get into trouble if he abstained from drink and he was taking steps in relation to that. Judge William Hamill stated that if the defendant didn’t address his problem he will be in a lot more trouble. He adjourned the case until February 5 for a Community Service Report.

Man had no excuse for driving car

A man who was involved in a road traffic accident was sentenced to three months in prison at Dundalk District Court. Richard Gorman, 28 Marian Park, Dundalk, admitted charges of unauthorised taking, having no insurance and having no licence on September 15/16 last year. The court was told that the defendant took the car, which had been hired by his brother during a visit home from abroad, from 149 Waterville Crescent, Avenue Rd, Dundalk. Soon after he was

involved in a traffic accident on the Blackrock Road in Haggardstown. Solicitor, Frank McDonnell, stated that his 28-year-old client who has a managed condition of epilepsy, had no excuse for his actions. He had previously been disqualified from driving and had been given suspended sentences. “He would have known that he needed insurance at the time. It would be a waste of the court’s time to explain why he took the car – he just did”, added Mr Mc-

Donnell who pointed out that his client’s medical condition precluded him from Community Service. Judge William Hamill imposed a three month prison sentence and disqualified Mr Gorman for five years. Following a request to have the sentence suspended, the judge remarked that the defendant already had the benefit of two suspended sentences. Mr McDonnell asked the judge to fix recognisance in the event of an appeal.

Debaters reach All-Ireland final

For the eleventh year in a row Dundalk will be represented in the final of Gael Linn’s Comórtas Uí Chadhain. The Coláiste Rís senior team, comprised brothers Mícheál and Neasán Mac Suibhne and Bearnard Mac Thoirealaigh, who overcame fierce opposition. The local students, appearing at the Boyne Valley Hotel, Drogheda, were proposing the motion go bhfuil an pá a thugtar don Taoiseach tuillte go maith aige – the pay given to the Taoiseach is well earned. The judges were generous in their praise of the Coláiste Rís students who turned in a storming display of debating and rebuttling skills. Padraig Ó hAdhmaill, school principal, expressed pride in his students’ success. “It is wonderful to see that this fantastic tradition that defines our school is alive and well. It is great to be able to boast that our school remains firmly planted at the very top of the ladder when it comes to Irish debating.” Meanwhile, Seán Ó Coigligh, team mentor, was delighted with his charges’ performance. “We knew this was going to be very difficult. But to see the confidence and competence of the three lads against such formidable opposition is very gratifying. Fair play to them.”

Dundalk Stadium announced plans to expand at the Horse Racing Ireland’s annual awards last week where they also won the Racecourse of the Year award. The grand opening to showcase Blackrock Community Centre’s 30th anniversary makeover took place on Sunday last with a large crowd in attendance. The event was the culmination of a huge body of work undertaken over the past two years by the community centre committee in conjunction with the groups, clubs and classes using the centre along with other community groups in Blackrock and Haggardstown. The changes include, a welcoming foyer - reception desk/office and new flooring, and three bright spacious rooms of varying sizes to suit different needs of users. There is also a dance studio with professionally sprung wooden floor, along with a new stage extension with a lighting and sound system for the main hall to attract shows/recitals to the village. The ground floor room updated, furnished, floored, insulated with ample storage while Junior and senior basketball nets have been installed and the floor lined. The upgraded facilities will include a purpose built althletics club room and meeting /conference room facilities. The community centre committee are very enthusiastic about the future and committee chairman, Fr Brian is delighted with the new facility. “It’s a hugely exciting time in the 30-year life of the community centre. Beyond Beauty

Students’ flair for business

Thursday December 12 saw the culmination of months of hard work for the TY students in St Vincent’s Secondary School with the annual Christmas Trade Fair. Hospital Run

One of the longest running sporting charity events in Irelnd will continue this year when Dowdallshill GF & AC organise the Christmas Morning Run to St Oliver’s Hospital. The event was first organised in 1959 when athletes and footballers from the Dundalk club ran from their clubrooms to deliver presents to patients at Blessed Oliver’s on the Ardee. Every year since then club members have made the trip that is one of highlights of the year for the hospital as the club also provides music and entertainment. The club now visits St Oliver’s at the Louth Hosptital and over the years, money collected has been presented to the hospital to purchase much-needed equipment such as PA sound systems, wheelchairs, walking aids, televisions and a full size crib with figures. Those wishing to support the event can contact any Dowdallshill committee member.

De La Salle’s annual Talent show Class Act’ on Thursday December 12 brought 14 of the school’s most talented musicians and singers to the stage of An Táin Theatre. Teacher Hugh Carr compéred as Drogheda musician and teacher Sarah O’Hare, Local Singer/Songwriter Stewart Agnew and ‘The Irish House Party’ guitarist Gerry Nolan had the unenviable task of judging. Among the performances was the exemplary piano playing of Joseph Mullen and Adam Kane. The evening began with vocalist Eoin Johnston accompanied by Ciarán Sunderland with their unique version of ‘Lego House’. First Year Boyband ‘Blayney Road’ and Fresh Beats with their contemporary dance really injected fun into the line up. Derek Ani’s scintillating rendition of John Legend’s ‘All Of Me’ along with Ciarán Sunderland’s version of ‘Cannonball’ really captivated the audience. ‘Something Original’ took to the stage with frontman Oisin McMahon singing ‘The Artic Monkey’s’ ‘Do I Wanna Know’. The audience were wowed by the ‘The untouchables’ authentic version of ‘Counting Stars’. This eclectic group featured 6th year repeat students Adams Omorede and Cathal Grennan on lead vocals together with 1st Year beatboxer Neil Murray, 6th year lead guitarist Justin Rosagaran and skilled bongos player Daniel Badejo. Adam McArdle’s rendition of ‘Small Bump’ was also a hit. The second half opened with 41students performing Imagine Dragons song ‘It’s Time’ in Irish. This

featured body percussion, bongos, tin whistle, guitars and lead vocalists Keane Hoey and Aaron McArdle, followed by a kickboxing display from Rian Doyle and Enda Kelly. Oisín Martin singing Deane Martin’s ‘Kick in the Head’ thrilled the judges. Oisín was followed by ‘Roulette’ who entertained the audience with their version of ‘Viva La Vida’. This exciting three-piece

made up of lead singer Conor Gray, pianist Adam Kane and Samuel Ogobamiedele on drums have a bright future ahead. This was followed by the Repeat students performing ‘The Cell Block Tango’. The show ended with a powerful performance of ‘Firework’ by St. Louis guest act Chloe Bourton, followed by Mr Carr and Mr McArdle taking to the stage to sing a magical and memorable version of

‘White Christmas’. Joint third place went to Joseph Mullen and

‘The Kickboxers’. Second place went to ‘Something Original’

and this Year’s title went to ‘The Untouchables’.

An industry analysis conducted by The AA has found that motor insurance prices are up by an average of 3.3% since the introduction of gender neutral pricing in December last year. While prices increased across the board, it was the young women aged 17 to 24, who fared the worst. Men in the same age bracket came out best. “We did predict a rise in motor insurance last December so we’re not really surprised with the outcome” says Conor Faughnan Director of Consumer Affairs at The AA. “We knew that young men would come out happy while young women would bear the brunt of the costs. It is shocking to see just how much more women aged 17 to 24 are paying.” According to the AA Insurance analysis women under the age of 25 generally saw a price increase of more than 20% since last year while some women saw increases of 50%. The young men are the winners. Those aged under 25 saw a decrease of 26%. For the slightly older age category, women aged 26 to 29 saw an increase of 3%, while men saw a decrease of almost 19%. “If you are a woman under 24 then for over 60% of cases your price has gone up, in some cases by a large amount” says Director of Consumer Affairs Conor Faughnan. “It is a little better for slightly older women but there are still sharp price increases for that category. The young men were the winners.”
