A member of staff has been suspended and an internal investigation has been opened in Dundalk Town Council after it emerged that there were serious irregularities in rent collection in the local authorities. The irregularities emerged when a pensioner was sent a letter from the housing department stating that they were in arrears to the sum of €2,500. However the tenant in question had kept detailed receipts of all payments and could prove that rent was fully up to date. The irregularities came to light late last week and the local authorities issued a statement in response. They said that the incident was

related to a specific location and that as well as the staff suspension and internal investigation, Gardaí had been notified. Paddy Donnelly of Louth County Council has assured the relevant tenants that they will not be adversely affected “As the matter is currently the subject of an internal investigation and has been notified to the Gardaí the council will be making no further statement or comment at this time,” he added. In response a number of local councillors voiced their complaints that not enough was being done to inform or support concerned tenants. Initially the council declined to offer information as to where Continued on Page 12

Father continues to fight for daughter’s case By Paul Byrne A petition with over 3000 names on it has been delivered to the office of Minister for Health, Dr James Reilly in Dublin. Last week David Nes-

bitt and a group of his friends travelled to Dublin to hand over the petition which called for the Minister to act upon his duty of making sure all children in the Republic of Ireland get the proper medical care to which

they are entitled whilst claiming that the needs of many disabled and underprivileged children are no longer being met efficiently by the Department of Health. David has been struggling for years to get

help for his 17 year old daughter Niamh who has a mental age of seven and who has never been. According to David he has been ignored and passed from office to office without anybody taking responsibility. He had been prepared to camp outside Minister Reilly’s office for as long as it took as he

looked for some sort of acknowledgement from him with regards to his daughters case. After a 16-hour wait, David and his fellow campaigners managed to deliver the petition to a member of Dr Reilly’s staff and he says he will now wait in hope for the Minister to respond. “To be honest I

wouldn’t be too hopeful of getting a response from him but I just feel as though I have to try everything I can to get help for Niamh. It is so frustrating trying to get help for her. We have been in touch with up to ten different services outside the HSE who help people like Niamh through special programmes but

we have been told by each and everyone of them that she can’t get a place with them until she gets officially assessed by the HSE” ,explained a frustrated David. “For some unknown reason the HSE will not assess my child and it is proving near impossible to find out why. Myself and my partner used to

set aside one night of the week where we went out together just to have a bit of time to ourselves. That’s all gone now as we are spending almost every waking hour trying to fight for Niamh. It’s tough but we are going to fight this all the way and are determined to get something done for our child”, he added.

Councillor Jennifer Green welcomed the decision of Dundalk Town Council to undertake a refurbishment of Clanbrassil Street but has asked the council to ensure that her concerns are addressed. The news was announced at Tuesday night’s Town Council meeting and Cllr Green, who has done a ‘walkaround’ Dundalk with wheelchair user John Morgan, once again raised questions about accessibility in the town. “When I was with John Morgan, I was utterly shocked at the state of some of the pavings and kerbs in some parts of the town and how difficult these errors make it for wheelchair users to get around. “In Anne Street, in particular, John had to drive down the road in order to cross from one side to the other as the kerbs were just too high for his wheelchair to access which in this day and age is just ridiculous and so dangerous. I didn’t appreciate how bad it was until I looked at it through John’s eyes”, she stated. “The Square was refurbished and

although it looks well, John found it difficult to pass over the silver bumps and it was very uncomfortable for him. These are things we don’t appreciate and why we need to involve all parts of the community in the decision making process.” The Sinn Féin Councillor asked ‘would this refurbishment make the area more user friendly for people with disabilities, particularly wheelchair users?’ The response was positive and officials in the council said they have set up direct contact informing the various registered disability groups about the plans which will include ‘drop kerbs’ which will make the area more accessible. “This is very welcome news and I hope that wheelchair users like John Morgan, will feel they were listened to and that Dundalk Town belongs to all of us. The plans go on public consultation this week and can be viewed in the Town Hall. I would urge all interested parties to view them and all recommendations to the plans are welcome.”

Judge highlights the tough job facing Gardai The difficult job facing Gardai in the course of their duty was highlighted at Dundalk District Court by Judge Conall Gibbons who stated that members of the force should not have to put up with abuse. Judge Gibbons made the comments as he passed sentence on James Rogan of 622 Ashling Park, Cox’s Demesne, Dundalk, who pleaded guilty to three public order charges. The court heard that at 2.30am on August 9 last year, Garda were called to Mullaharlin Park, Dundalk, where the defendant

was intoxicated, abusive and failed to leave. Mr Rogan, who has 53 previous convictions, was described by his solicitor, Frank McDonnell, as being the “author of his own misfortune” on the date in question. He added the 33-year-old defendant holds down a job and has continued contact with the Probation Services on a voluntary basis in order to deal with issues, while he also pointed out that Mr Rogan apologised to the Gardai. In response, Judge Gibbons stated that he was not happy that the defendant had behaved in

such a way to the Gardai. “I wouldn’t want to have to go out like the Gardai and do what they have to do and it troubles me that he gives them verbal abuse. I don’t see why they should be expected to put up with that abuse and people need to realise that they can’t do it”, said the judge. In convicting the defendant on the charge of threatening and abusive behaviour, Judge Gibbons, imposed a €400 fine. In relation to the failure to comply with the direction of Gardai, he imposed a €250 fine and took the other matter into consideration.

of their car. Once the design specifications were finalised and having successfully completed the Qualifying Stage (a 5 page project plan), the next step was to bring the car designs to life at the University of Limerick. Participating in this competition has provided the students a great opportunity to introduce them to the ex-

citing world of science, engineering and technology and also allowed the students to view a manufacturing system at work and see what the job of an engineer is really like. Now that the car has been manufactured, the team turns its attention to fixing axles and wheels to the car and also to the final finishing and race prepara-

tion. The car will be finished with high quality paint in the team’s blue and white colour scheme and decorated with sponsor stickers and various decals. Race day is now fast approaching, with Regional finals taking place on March 14 and National finals in April. Teams will be judged on multiple criteria, including car engineering

and speed, displays of portfolios and verbal presentations. The national winners of the 2013/2014 season will gain the chance to represent Ireland at the World finals in Abu Dhabi. The visit of the Giro d’Italia to Dundalk in May is set to attract thousands to the town centre after details of the route were finalised recently. The prestigious race will pass through Dundalk on Sunday May 11 where one of the main sprints of the first leg of the event will be held. The details of the route were confirmed following a visit by Irish organiser Darach McQuaid, along with his Italian colleagues

and event organisers The race for the ‘Red Jersey’ will pick up pace as the cyclists approach Dundalk and will end at St Nicholas’ Green Church, meaning that spectators will get to see cyclists taking a gentler pace up through Church St, Clanbrassil St, the Market Square, Francis St, Park St, Dublin St and onto the Dublin Road. Speaking afterwards, Pat O’Shaughnessy of Cuchulainn Cycling Club, revealed that the

crew was impressed by what they saw as they took a walk along the Clanbrassil Street and pinpointed locations for the sprint finish. “Dundalk will be the place where thousands can gather at the Market Square, see the only sprint in the Southern leg of the race. “It’s going to be an amazing sight given the speed of the sprint in contrast to the much slower pace they’ll cycle at through the remainder of the town

route”, added Mr O’Shaughnessy. Speaking following the Giro d’Italia crew visit, Cathaoirleach Eamonn O’Boyle highlighted the importance of the event. “Dundalk is in the enviable position of being the only town centre to feature prominently on the Irish route. Everyone involved in Giro Dundalk, including myself is delighted that the cyclists will now travel the full length of the town, highlighting

Dundalk on a global platform.” The local stage will see the riders travel from Armagh via Keady, over Keady mountain, Newtownhamilton, Lislea, Longfield Rd, and into Louth on the Carrickasticken Road, on its journey past Forkhill, into Kilcurry and joining the R177 Armagh Road, onto Lisdoo and into Dundalk Town Centre. Leaving Dundalk, it travels on the R132 via Castlebellingham and Dunleer.

Performers get ready for Fheis Dhun Dealgan Young performers across Co Louth are in the throes of preparing poems and prose for the coming Feis Dhun Dealgain which takes place this weekend in the Fairways Hotel. Over two days students from as young as four and up to 18 years old compete in 42 different competitions that will test their performance skills, in what is the 17th year of the event. The participants perform in a series of solo performances including poetry, sight-reading, drama, mime, television newsreader and original poetry. Double acts or duologues and group performances also feature over the weekend. According to the event’s founder, Patricia Reynolds, it promises to be a testing but rewarding weekend for the participants. “Group Improvisation is very challenging for the students because, as a group of up to ten, they are given a topic and have only five minutes to prepare the theme, then perform on stage to an audience, cold, as such. “Among the most challenging and entertaining parts of the weekend is the Movement to Music. This competition is looked forward to so much

both by the students and parents. Students interpret songs and music in different ways, some performances are a play in mime, others are dance and a mixture of the two”, explained Patricia “The older students have been developing their skills for more than ten years in many cases. They are of such a high standard in performance, that many a judge throughout the years of Feis Dhun Dealgain have been reduced to tears and have needed to gather themselves before standing up to adjudicate the competitions, “ said Patricia. Pamela Hughes from of Take Two casting agency returns this year to help judge the competition with Pat Howe of Stagedoor Productions, the popular drama, dance and music school. This year the Feis Dhun Dealgain takes place on Saturday and Sunday March 8 and 9 from 6pm to 9pm in the Fairways Hotel. There is a one day entry fee of €4, or €7 weekend ticket, senior citizens and non participating students €3, per day or €5 for the weekend, children are free.

According to Aisling, the classes are very enjoyable and challenging. The focus is on problem solving, and the most difficult part is that no two

The classes are given by lecturers of maths in UCD so it gives a helpful insight into what it would be like studying Maths at third level. The initial programme completed with a Graduation ceremony in December 2013 with 25 of the 28 participants successfully attaining a FETAC accreditation. More importantly many availed of the Back to Enterprise scheme and started new businesses, with a few securing loans from Microfinance and feasibility grants from Louth County Enterprise Board. John Speaks At Ard Fheis

Fine Gael candidate for Dundalk-Carlingford, John McGahon, addressed last weekend’s Fine Gael Ard Fheis at which he called on the Government to ensure that young people are prioritised for training schemes and offered every support possible to enter the work force. John’s speech, which was broadcasted live on RTE, received a strong reception from delegates. He spoke of his generation’s desire to ‘rebuild Ireland for those who left and want to return’ “Ireland has one of the youngest populations in Europe and its time we harnessed the talent and energy that my generation has. We need to ensure that more young people are priortised for employment and training schemes so they have the necessary experience and skills when they enter the workforce”, he said.

The Dundalk 10k has become a very popular event over the last number of years

Dundalk Institute of Technology will host The Dundalk 10k race event for the first time with the race being run in aid of Development Perspectives a local development NGO. The race has previously been organised for the past four years by Brian McCrystal but this year DkIT Sports and Societies, DkIT Student Union and Development Perspectives will work together to carry out and improve the Dundalk 10k. Having DkIT involved will add greatly to the event with all the extra available facilities such as the college canteen to cater for all the runners afterwards with

over 1,000 car park spaces. The run itself will both start and finish in the college while still taking in the atmosphere of the town centre like previous years. The event itself is AAI certified and chip timed. The cost of registration is €20 or for students there is a promotion deal of €15. There is currently an early bird promotion deal of €18, running until Sunday March 2. All participants receive a free T-shirt and goodie bag on the day of the event. There are also great prizes to be won for first, second and third place winners. The race is in aid of Development Perspectives a local

development NGO based in Drogheda, Co. Louth. Development Perspectives are a part of a national and global network of curious, critical thinkers and development practitioners working for social justice. Their main aim is to challenge some of the ideas people have about the world around them and encourage them to re-evaluate their perspective, see beyond their current reality and find ways to make the world a more equal place. They run educational programmes in collaboration with partners in Africa and India. Participants can register online at www.dundalk10k.com.

Local club celebrating 40th anniversary By Eunan Whyte

One of Dundalk’s best known football clubs is holding a special event to celebrate its 40th anniversary. Bay United Football Club will celebrated the significant milestone with a special night in The Lisdoo on Saturday May 24 and they are looking for as many people associated with the club as possible to attend. The night will be an opportunity to catch up with friends and relive some of the great memories and games associated with the club down through the years. To help jog people’s memories of the teams of the past, the organising committee are calling on people with photographs or information from the last four decades to come forward. One of the big attractions on the night is certain to be the unveiling of a number of all star teams that represented

Hospital to lose another service By Niamh Kirk

Louth County Hospital is to lose another of its services as the HSE has confirmed to local councillor and campaigner for the retention of services at Louth County Hospital Tomás Sharkey that they are not reopening the Laundry services. Twelve months ago it was revealed that the HSE had been ferrying laundry from the Louth County Hospital to Drogheda because the steam boiler had failed ultrasound hygiene tests. At the time Cllr Sharkey said that he believed that there was no plans to fix the boiler . He said he was “concerned that in six months time, the HSE will attempt to close the laundry in Louth County Hospital and redeploy the staff”, he said at the time and added: “I am also concerned that the HSE will follow Minister Brendan Howlin’s guidance and try to outsource or

privatise laundry services from our hospitals.” His words have proved prophetic if off by half a year, as this week he announced, “I have learned that the decision has now been made by the HSE not to reinstate laundry services to Dundalk and also to cease laundry work in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda. The HSE want to outsource the work,” he said. “The amazing part of this story is that the HSE manager I met

on the issue on Thursday doesn’t know how much it will cost to put the work out to private tender.” “It is beyond belief that at a time when costs need to be cut to save money and protect patient services that the HSE hasn’t fixed a broken boiler in Dundalk. “Privatising laundry services for our hospitals will create a new bill each and every year and will cost more in the long run than fix- Dr Michelle McKeown from Dundalk who was coning and replacing existing equip- ferred with a PhD by NUI Galway at the recent gradument,” he said. ation ceremony

DkIT makes medical device innovation

Dr Fergal McCaffery of the Regulated Software Research Centre (RSRC) at Dundalk IT has announced that the Medical SPICE project team has received confirmation that its Process Reference Model for Medical Device Software Lifecycle Processes has been approved by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). The Process Reference Model was developed by the RSRC and 32 countries were invited to vote on the submission. All

of the voting parties were positive in their endorsement of the Process Reference Model, which is to be officially designated IEC 80002-3. IEC 80002-3 can now be adopted globally as the primary reference model for implementing medical device software development processes. It has furthermore been suggested that it may replace the Food and Drug Administration’s current approach for determining whether or not an organisation is implementing safe

medical device software processes. Such developments greatly increase the international reputation of DkIT as a leading academic institute for medical device software engineering. Speaking on the confirmation, Dr McCaffery said, “This has involved a considerable amount of work and has been ongoing since I proposed it at an International Medical Device Standards meeting in Seattle in October 2010. It is great to see it achieve this status and I would like

Town to celebrate Women’s Day

Dundalk Leader 5th March 2014

International Women’s Day is to be marked annually in Dundalk following the approval of a motion put forward by Cllr Edel Corrigan. Louth Councillors have previously rejected the call to mark the occasion twice but have new agreed to mark the occasion on its third attempt. The motion called on the Local authorities to select a theme relevant to Local Community on an annual basis and allow local groups to host events on themes that are specific to them. Cllr Corrigan said that she is pleased to have a commitment from Louth County Council to run events. Since the Government’s commitment to help increase the number of women engaging in politics, International Women’s Day on March 8 had repeatedly sparked debate on how to increase female representation in the political sphere as well as the impact of under representation. This year on the inaugural celebration of International’s Women’s Day, Louth Sinn Fein will be hosting events and co-ordinating

with other local groups to mark the event. On Friday March 7, Sinn Féin Vice-President Mary-Lou McDonald will visit Dundalk and meet with a number of community groups and organisations to discuss the role of women in ‘Inspiring Change’ in their communities. The theme of the discussions will continue through to a panel discussion to be held in DkIT from 12pm to 1pm. All interested members of the public are invited to attend. Following the panel discussion Deputy McDonald will attend a reception in the Sinn Féin office in Crowe Street that is open to the public. “While this is an event to mark International Women’s Day, we at Sinn Féin encourage men to attend these events also, which will hopefully show them ways in which they too can help support women and celebrate their achievements.” I had spoken to Mary-Lou a number of months ago about my plans to hold a series of events

this year to help encourage and support women in taking on the role of social leadership in their areas of interest, she immediately committed herself to help and support this in any way that she could. So I am delighted that she will be joining us. With the local elections looming and a series of decisions to cut funding to women’s services in Dundalk, the number of female candidates running in parties or as independents will be a particularly salient issue for some. Currently there are seven women running across four parties for seats on Louth County Council. Sinn Fein are the forerunners in representation with three women going forward, followed by Fine Gael with two and The Green Party and People Before Profit both with a candidate each. However with 29 seats to fill women will continue to be a minority, and may cause the parties problems when they have to meet a 25% quota for women in the coming national election in 2016.

Spirit Store brings a little bit of Joy Division By Niamh Kirk

Charlie and Molly Gorman at the Dundalk Credit Union Open Day

They were one of the most defining bands of a generation, one of few groups that managed to make a colossal impact with only two studio albums, but Joy Division continue to be one of the most celebrated bands in the world. In the 70s they pioneered the post punk movement, won critical acclaim and were a necessity in any

record collection. Even after the death of iconic front-man Ian Curtis the band continued to have commercial success with the posthumous release of Closer. On March 15, the Spirit Store are bringing a little Joy Division to Dundalk by hosting an evening with former Joy Division and New Order Bassist Peter Hook. As well as DJing, Hook also owns a nightclub in Manches-

ter, The Factory, in the old offices of Factory Records, and has launched a Master Degree Programme in Music Industry Management and Promotion at the University of Central Lancashire. The evening kicks off with a screening of ‘Control’ the 2007 biographical film about the life of Ian Curtis. Which will be followed up with a Q&A session between journalist Tony Clayton Lea and

EU election evening

Dundalk Branch Library hosted an EU Election event on February 27 in conjunction with the Europe Direct Information Centre at Dundalk Library. Keynote speaker was Mary O’Rourke, who entertained everyone with anecdotes from her colourful life in politics, her Dundalk connections and her views on Europe, the economy and current political issues. The expert panel included Francis Jacobs, Head of the EU Parliament Information Office in Ireland and Frankie Watters, Senior Lecturer in Law in DkIT. Both speakers gave knowledgeable insights into European law and current controversies. Audience participation was highly interactive with plenty of questions and debate. Issues debates included the importance of democracy, healthy ageing, education and job opportunities, women & equal rights and the role of the EU in the everyday life of a citizen. The importance of everyone’s right to vote shouldn’t be taken lightly and everyone was encouraged to use their vote in the upcoming EU and local elections on May 23.

Friends again after late night assault The victim of a late night assault illustrated the level to which he has since made up with his assailant by accompanying him to Dundalk District Court to face charges in relation to the incident. Mark McMullen of 13A Anne St, Dundalk, pleaded guilty to an assault charge at Park St on February 5, 2011, and was told by Judge Conall Gibbons that despite the views of the injured party, he had to treat this as a serious issue. The court was told that Mr McMullen was the lesser of three protagonists involved and that he had joined in after the initial assault had started. The victim suffered a blow to the face and eye, along with a bite mark on his ear. However, it was stated that the defendant’s involvement was limited to mostly

Ladies Day at Rugby Club

The tag rugby clubs of Leinster descended on Dundalk Rugby Club over the weekend in huge numbers to take part in a festival of tag rugby. With over 140 girls players on the pitch playing simultaneously - it’s fair to say it was Ladies Day in Dundalk Rugby Club! Clubs travelled from Boyne, Ardee, Sutton, Blackrock, Ratoath and Navan and the persistent rain did little to hamper the festival spirit at the club.

The event is testament to increasing interest in girls rugby at every level. Clubs fielded teams in U10/12 and 15 ages, and the muddy pitches resulted in many muddy but hugely enjoyable encounters. Dundalk Rugby Club actively encourages and supports female involvement in the club. The event was kicked off by Club President, Ciaran Herr, who expressed his delight at the huge numbers the event attracted.

pushing and shoving. One of the other people involved has since died while the third assailant was not identified. Solicitor, Frank McDonnell, stated that the defendant is a 33-year-old welder, who has little memory of the incident and bears no ill-will to Mr Sheehy. He asked the judge to consider that the current view of the victim was a mitigating

factor. In response, Judge Gibbons stated that his considerations had to go beyond the views of the victim in a case such as this. “The criminal justice system operates in the public interest irrespective of the view of the injured party. “It is a serious issue that people misbehave at the hour mentioned and at a time when inhibitions have disappeared or when they have less capacity to control themselves. We know that people have sustained serious injury at this time of night, so I have to keep in mind the public interest”, the judge added. Judge Gibbons then adjourned the case to October 7, 2015, to allow the defendant pay €1,000 to both the Simon Community and Rape Crisis Centre.

the new NISSAN QASHQAI

Since 2007 Nissan have sold over 2 million Qashqai and the trend looks to carry on with the all-new model. Which is 49mm longer, slightly lower and wider to give a more poised stance. Safety is at the forefront of design, with the availability of Nissan’s Safety Shield technologies which incorporate Front Collision Avoidance, Driver Attention Support, Traffic Sign Recognition, Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Warning, Moving Object Detection and High Beam Assist. There be the option of Full LED headlamps which consume 50 per cent of the power of previous Xenon lamps. Chassis Control, Intelligent Parking Assist, NissanConnect with smartphone app integration and Around View Monitoring. Cleverly technology such as Driver Attention Support will take around 10 minutes to ‘learn’ your driving style, the Nissan Safety Shield will monitor driving inputs, showing

a dashboard alert if steering becomes erratic, indicating the driver should take a break. Efficiency has not been forgotten with CO2 emissions of 99 k/ km (engine dependent) and a reduction of 40kg over the outgoing model. Where the majority of sales have been for the front-wheel-drive model, Nissan will still continue with fourwheel-drive ALLMODE 4x4-i versions with the choice of sixspeed manual or allnew Xtronic transmissions. The engine line-up comprises four engines: two petrol and two diesel, with the option of two- or four-wheeldrive. You choose between manual and allnew Xtronic automatic transmissions. The petrol line-up starts with the entry level 1.2 DIG-T 115PS unit which is coupled to a six-speed manual gearbox.
