Battle is now on to save Women’s Aid

A HUGE battle is underway in an attempt to save Dundalk Women’s Aid from closure after it was announced last week that the vital service will cease due to a cut in Government funds. The centre has seen its funding cut by 75 per cent in the past two years which means that they now have only been offered €20,000 in funding which the management state makes it impossible to sustain the service. Although the women’s refuge announced last week that it would close on June 27 unless a sustainable solution to the funding cuts can be found, there remains a strong hope that the service

can be maintained. There has been a massive outcry and a strong level of public support to see the service continue which has offered encouragement to those invovled in the centre, who realise that something substantial needs to come from that support. A spokesperson said that they are overwhelmed with the support and fundraising efforts but that what is required is a commitment from the funding body to ensure that there is suitable, sustainable provision for the victims of domestic violence in the north east. The announcement of the closure provoked a huge reaction with more than 3,500 people joining a Facebook group fight to save

From page 1 Women’s Aid Dundalk and a petition to be handed to Louth Local Authorities to save the refuge gaining more than 2000 signatures so far. A special meeting of Dundalk Town Council involving Councillors, Council Management and representatives for Women’s Aid is expected to take place this week to prevent the closure. A representative from the refuge said

that they can run on €50,000 year, however what is crucial is that that the funding is sustained. Dundalk Women’s Aid has been in negotiations with Louth County Council who administer the homelessness accommodation funding. Last year the women’s refuge suffered a 53% cut in funding and this year, following a Government led directive the cut has increased to 75%.

The refuge has been suffering the financial pressures of cuts to their running costs acutely. The refuge representatives say that they were unable to accommodate 297 people’s requests for refuge last year, and already this year they 104 were not able to be homed. The running costs of the refuge are provided by the Department of Environment who this year directed that 4.4% of homeless funding could go to provision for domestic abuse. The refuge managers were offered €20,000 to run the shelter this year, which is impossi-

ble to sustain a spokesperson said. A notice issued by Louth Housing Authority which is responsible for homelessness accommodation costs outlined their position which states that the allocation they offered is “based on the national budget allocation from the Department of Environment, which has specific inbuilt targets.” “The decision to plan the closure of the Dundalk Refuge was a decision of their own board, which is their entitlement,” it read. However, the notice from the Housing Section states that the

Minister for Housing and Planning is only provisionally allocating the budgets and efforts are being made to force a review of the limit placed on the budget. Last week Gerry Adam’s TD tackled the Taoiseach during Leaders Questions on the matter asking “How can the Government claim to be protecting victims when the Department of the Environment is cutting funding on homelessness through local councils and this is having a direct impact on the funding of Women’s refuges for women and children

TDs Peter Fitzpatrick and Gerry Adams have backed the campaign to save Women’s Aid

who are victims of domestic violence?” Deputy Fitzpatrick called on the Minister for state to undertake to save the refuge. “The services provided by the facility are of

immense benefit and are, unfortunately, in great demand. Dundalk and the north east need this facility. I ask that her Department works with me to save this invaluable refuge.”

Cic Saor is back next month as the search for Ireland’s best free kick taker takes place in Oriel Park on May 3 with €5000 up for grabs for the overall winner. The All Ireland Cic Saor championship was created by Dundalk man Adrian O’Donoghue as he set out to devise a competition that would financially reward individual excellence in the art of free taking , a competition that anyone who believed enough in their free taking ability could enter from any sporting background. “The All Ireland Cic Saor Championship” was born in 2012 with Louth midfielder Brian White walking away with the title and returned last year with Louth Village man Declan Byrne coming up trumps thanks to his deadly accurate free taking ability. Adrian O’Donoghue is looking forward to this year’s event and as he explains 10% of all this year’s entrants will receive some form of cash prize. “We’re giving away €5000 for the winner again and as well as that there will be cash prizes for 10% of all the people who enter. Registration opens this Saturday on our website www. cicsaor.ie at 11am and as always we are welcoming everybody to come along and give it a try. It doesn’t matter if you play GAA or not or if you want to play for yourself or a club or a charity. Everybody is

welcome to give it a go and rub shoulders with some of the best free takers in the country” explained Adrian. “2012 was our first year running the event; it attracted players from Gaelic, soccer and rugby backgrounds. We were delighted to have legends Jack O’Shea and Oisin McConville with us in Oriel Park last year and they’ll be back again next month to watch on as the competition gets going. This year there is a slightly different registration format with the first 20 people registering getting a special offer cut price €50 buy in fee. Outside of those lucky first twenty people it will cost €75 to register up until midnight 19th April. Between the 19th and 30th April registration will cost €100. A man who appeared to have conquered his drug addictions has to start all over again after falling back into his old ways. As a result, Stephen McVeigh, Commons Road, Dromiskin, found himself back before Dundalk District Court where he pleaded guilty to a number of burglary charges. Judge Flann Brennan remarked that this ‘tragic case’ highlighted just how appalling any drug addiction can be, after solicitor, Frank McDonnell, outlined the huge steps taken by the defendant prior to the recent incidents. Mr McDonnell, stated that the 33-year-old defendant came from the best of backgrounds but his opportunities in life were blighted when he became addicted to drugs and ultimately, heroin.

“Many steps were taken and two years ago he looked to have climbed the mountain. He was free from drugs and returned to college where he completed his first year. “Then he found people from his past and fell into drugs again. He was out of the family home and burgled places to get money. When he was arrested, he sought to be remanded in custody and has been on methadone over the past two weeks. He is in much better shape now”, explained Mr McDonnell. “This is extremely regrettable as the outlook was promising and he thought he had left the criminal system behind him. He is happy to return to custody as he is taking the benefit of that and he hopes to return home and start again”, added the solicitor. He pointed out that Mr

McVeigh is a bright young man but a classic example of a man afflicted by drugs. Insp Martin Beggy had revealed that on March 18 the defendant was arrested in Muirhevnamor and found with a 12-inch bread knife. There were also a number of burglaries committed at a shop and office in DkIT on dates in February and March. The defendant was identified on CCTV. In making his ruling on what he described as a tragic case, Judge Flann Brennan imposed a five month sentence. “This is a very tragic case in many ways, particularly as the strides made were squandered by falling back into addiction. The distinguishing feature is that addiction seems to lead to offences of theft in order to fund the habit”, stated the judge.

The specialist led team at Maxillo Dental Clinic is committed to providing high quality dental treatment in a professional, family friendly and relaxed environment. We provide a full range of dental treatment from fillings to veneers and extractions to implants.

Karate students enjoy successful spell Dundalk Karate returned victorious from the annual Ballybay Karate Club competition with nine medals and this was followed in quick succession by a successful grading for members. 2014 has been very busy for all within Dundalk Karate, between travelling to Dublin to train with a World and

European Champion Junior Lefevre in February, and competing in the Ballybay event. Each and every member of Dundalk Karate was under extra pressure of an upcoming grading, and with numerous competitions on the agenda in the weeks to come, members thrived. Sensei Mary Marcus,

head of Dundalk Karate said, “Each member of Dundalk Karate has been putting in 100% to their training, and not only were they training for upcoming competitions, but they were also put under the extra pressure of an upcoming grading. Everyone who attended the Ballybay competition came home with not

only gaining valuable experience but had the added bonus of winning a number of medals”, she stated. Currently Dundalk Karate who trainin the Redeemer Family Resource Centre are getting ready to step up to the mark yet again for the Annual IWKR competition.

Cross Cooley Challenge worth the effort The Cross the Cooley Challenge trek across a 15k hike from the Lumpers to Carlingford to raise much needed funds for the North Louth Hospice Home Care attracted huge numbers. Approximately 150 people answered the call and turned up to register for the walk already armed with sponsorship cards hoping to fill them with promise of funds. However the weather had a major say in the walk with heavy rain for three days and a low mist with visibility at 20/25 yards the mountain was a treacherous place. A lot of the walkers slipped or fell in the conditions and at one

point in the walk almost 50 hikers took the wrong turn and extended their walk 20k. Thanks to the good work of the Order of Malta who had two fully equipped units on the mountains and the constant phone contact of the committee all walkers got off the mountain all be it tired, wet but happy that they had completed it. Fergus McArdle a committee member revealed that the strenuous efforts of all were worthwhile with a large amount of money raised. “The numbers are 30% up onthe 2013 trek with a great mix of enthusiastic people looking forward to the trek. I expected

that the €19,000 raised in 2013 will be well exceeded and we will announce the funds raised on May 3”, he stated. Eventually all the hikers completed the challenge and had well deserved drinks in Carlingford before being taken back to Dundalk. Aoife McCumiskey after completing the extended walk was among the 50 hikers missing she said, “it was a great idea of combining the walk and a fun day out and at the same time knowing a great cause such as the North Louth Hospice is been supported to continue its great work. However next year I will be more prepared to face the elements”.

New initiative to tackle dog fouling By Niamh Kirk

Louth County Council have declared war on irresponsible dog owners in a new initiative to tackle the problem of dog fouling in Dundalk. A new system has been introduced that promises to reduce the amount of dogfaeces on the streets by as much as 82%. The new system involves a mobile device audio device that transmits messages as well as a monitoring system that will help track the behaviour around dog fouling hotspots. The devices will be moved around various locations in an effort to ensure the highest degree of coverage in the town. A spokesperson from Louth County Council said that “the issue has been a subject of con-

tinuous complaints to the local authority from both the general public and local media. Having reviewed the feedback and hard evidence from the installations last year in Fingal and Limerick city, we were impressed by the sophistication of the system which aims to bring about behavioral change in dog owners.” The installation of the system will be installed by RiteView Solutions who have had success across a number of local authority areas. The devices cost €180 each and there is a running cost of €55 per week which comes to €2,860 annually. A spokesperson said that “we are satisfied it will represent good value for money.” The trial period will also provide statistics relating to the instances of dog fouling/times/

frequency which will assist in maximising local resources in terms of street cleaning and enforcement by Litter/Dog Wardens. “We will also transfer the unit to other locations, to expand the coverage and to increase ‘getting the message across’ to Keep Dundalk Tidy, and please clean up after your dog,” said the spokesperson. Section 22 of the Litter Pollution act 1997 requires the dog owner to clean up the dog foul from a public place. You are liable for €150 fine, leading to a court fine of up to €1500 for non-payment of fine. Cllr Conor Keelan who in January called on the council to use a more coordinated approach to the dog fouling problem said he welcomed the new initiative.

Septic tanks fail inspection

More than half of all household septic tanks inspected in Louth have failed their first inspection by the Environmental Protection Agency . A minimum number of risk-based site inspections were allocated by the EPA for each county and to date all of the required inspections in Louth have been completed. A spokesperson has said that many of the failures could be avoided by householders taking simple steps to maintain their treatment systems. In the majority of cases, those that failed did so because the tank was not desludged or it was not properly operated and maintained. Advice to assist householders in maintaining their domestic waste water treatment systems is available through Local Authority leaflets and websites. Extensive information for homeowners is also available on www.epa.ie.

Realt Na Mara toast Feis success By Paul Byrne

Talented youngsters in Realt na Mara ensured the school were crowned Feis Mhuirtheimhne champions for the second year running. The competition which was open to all schools in the area showcased the children’s talents in poetry with pupils from Junior Infants right up to 6th Class impressing the watching judges. Sile Ui Chiarain, a teacher in Realt na Mara, praised the children for all their efforts whilst also acknowledging the fantastic work done by Niall and Elizabeth Sloane who work

They give their time voluntarily and put their heart and soul into all things Irish. “The children had a

great time taking part with two members of each class taking part reciting a poem. “We won it last year so it was lovely to take back the trophy again this year although this time we will be sharing it with Knockbridge school who finished as joint winners alongside us”, explained Sile. The Feis Mhuirtheimhne was open to all schools in the Dundalk area and this year took place in the Friary school, with fierce competition and a great sense of camaraderie on the day between all pupils.

New efforts to combat damage to mountains Councillor Jim Loughran has called on off road vehicles such as quad bikes and scramblers, to stop causing damage to the Cooley Mountains and worrying sheep in the process. The Dundalk/Carlingford councillor said “the Cooley Mountains are beautiful at this time of year and we should respect this wonderful gift we have here in County Louth. There are a few people using

the mountains as a scrambling track and it is churning up the soil and earth and destroying the area for those of us who appreciate it”. A farming representative said “It is hard to settle sheep on spring pasture when they are being chased like this. Some of the pastures are churned up so badly that it’s visible in satellite photos and there are concerns that Single

Farm Payments will be affected.” However, this is a cross border problem. Similar damage had been done in the Ring of Gullion on the north side of the border. When Gardai attempt to stop these activities, the groups of people just escape over the border leaving Gardai frustrated. Cllr Jim Loughran welcomed the fact that a new alliance of

farmers, walkers and conservationists have come together to combat the serious damage being done by scramblers and quads in the Cooley Mountains and the Ring of Gullion. “There will be a public meeting on Wednesday April 9 in the Carrickdale Hotel, organised by this new alliance, to discuss the problem on both sides of the border and how we can move forward.”

Over to you QUESTION: Should the retirement age be optional or is it ok at 65?

Wael Shabo I think that should be dependent on the job requirement and the demands of the work they are doing. If the person is fit I see no reason why they shouldn’t continue working.

Raymond Shukla

Seamus O’Hare

Remy Holden

Heather Christmas

If the person is still fit and able let them work. I don’t see the purpose of telling somebody to stop doing their job if they are fit and able to do it.

I think it should be entirely up to the person if they work on after the age of 65. I actually think the whole system should be changed as we are working too much but given the present system let the person decide.

I think they should stop at 65. I think people should be able to rest for a few years after working for so long. They should be able to enjoy their later years.

I think there probably should be an age limit to a point but I think people should choose at 65 if they want to continue or not. There should be an option rather than they just be told it’s over.

Call for action on drugs deaths FOLLOWING the release of figures showing that the North East had the highest rate of overdose deaths in the country the Chairperson of the Dundalk Drugs Action Group (DDAG), Cllr Mark Deary, has written to the NE Regional Drugs Task force seeking an intervention to help save lives. Explaining the reason for the request Cllr Mark Dearey said that the group believe the disturbing number of deaths by overdose in this area requires a response and for that reason they are seeking the introduction of a naloxone programme for the North East. Naloxone is a drug that can be easily

administered by injection into the outer thigh which stops the central nervous system of a person who has overdosed from shutting down. It has been shown to work and is effective if other injecting users, street workers or staff in residential settings are carrying it, as they can administer it to someone in their company exhibiting symptoms of overdose.” Cllr Dearey highlighted some of the issues that will need to be addressed. “A change in the legislation governing its administration may be required so that nonmedics can deliver the intervention. However, the local

network of service providers who sit on the Dundalk Drugs Action Group are anxious to see a pilot programme introduced. They have indicated that they are willing to be involved in the introduction of the measure and to work with users and their families, as well as in residential settings to ensure that in crisis moments, people know how to respond if they are witnessing an overdose. “We look forward to working with the Regional Drugs Task Force on this important harm reduction approach which I know is being given serious consideration already by the HSE”, added Cllr Dearey.

Curves provide boost for Women’s Aid By Niamh Kirk

As Dundalk Women’s Aid continues to battle for survival the fundraising efforts of local supporters continues and last Thursday saw the fruition of the Curves annual food drive. Throughout March Curves has been collecting perishable foods from their members and boosted donations by a special promotion where new members could donate a bag of food instead of paying the normal joining fee. “The food drive is vital part of the community programme that fits perfects with curves philosophy of promot-

ing positive health and creating a community for real women. We look forward to many years of giving back to deserving charities such as Dundalk Women’s Aid”, said Paula Duff, manager of Curves Dundalk. “Our members generosity is a true reflection of the Curves spirit

and community, we are thrilled with the efforts of our members and friends”, she added. Lisa from Women’s Aid was present to receive the donations and explained how important assistance like this can be. Dundalk Women’s Aid deal with among

the most vulnerable people in the community; often the victims of domestic violence go to the shelter immediately after an assault in the home, frequently with the children, but nothing else. The people in Women’s Aid support these women until they can support themselves, this includes sustaining them until income arrangements are changed or reorganised. The food donations she explained helped with the emergency provision of basic food items and toiletries in these emergency circumstances. Such donations are described as being a huge help.

Man overcome by anger and alcohol A man who was described as being involved in a domestic situation of a jealous nature became so “overcome by anger and alcohol” that he damaged property with an axe. As a result of the incident on February 15, Leonard Morgan of Bavan, Omeath, pleaded guilty to a charge of possession of knives or other articles at Dundalk District Court, along with a public order charge. Insp Martin Beggy stated that on that date Gardai from Ardee were called to assist an ambulance crew who were dealing with a woman with self-inflicted injuries at a housing estate in Dromiskin. The officers saw an axe on the public road and learned from the crew

that they had seen the defendant, who was very drunk, waving the axe and causing damage to property. Although the axe was not used as a direct threat to the crew, they were put in fear. Solicitor, Dermot Lavery, stated that his 33-year-old client, did not threaten anyone and he added that the injuries to the woman had nothing to do with him. He added that the axe had been in the house and picked up by the defendant rather than him coming with it. Mr Lavery explained that it was a domestic situation of a jealous nature in which the defendant was overcome by anger and alcohol. Judge Flann Brennan imposed a fine of €150 in each case.

Popular walking tour initiative returns

The County Museum, Dundalk will once again hold its popular Walking Tour of Dundalk programme, extending the initiative from late April through to late summer. The tours are scheduled to take place on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at 11am from April 29 through to late summer. The tour will also include numerous sites of historical importance including St. Leonard’s Gardens, the Courthouse and St.

Patrick’s Cathedral before concluding at the Museum building on Jocelyn Street. Museum Curator, Brian Walsh, said that the Walking Tour has proven to be an interesting and popular activity. “There is great interest in the Walking Tour and it helps greatly in giving visitors to the Museum a better background knowledge of the collections we exhibit. “Because of this, we are also planning a Walking Tour with

schools specifically in mind, whereby the students can take part in the Walking Tour and combine it with a visit to the Museum, either on the same day or on two different days.” Advance booking is necessary, as a minimum number of participants are required for the Walking Tour which costs a nominal fee of €1, and is weather dependent. Further information on the historical Walking Tour, contact the County Museum at 042 9327056.

Éiméid and Neasa were not alone in their success however as the entire cast won a place at the upcoming Leinster finals of the Féile Scoildrámaíochta in Mullingar. “We are very proud of the students’ achievements. A Dundalk man who pleaded guilty to a string of offences was sentenced to ten months in prison at Dundalk District Court. Robert Maguire of 18 St Helena Park, Dundalk admitted the offences between April 2013 and January this year. The court heard that on April 2, Gardai spoke to the defendant at Boyds Car Park where he handed over four blades from a Stanley knife. When he was arrested he caused a commotion, kicking the window of a patrol car and causing damage worth €250. Two days later, the defendant was arrested on public order charges at St Helena after he was drunk and aggressive towards Gardai. Mr Maguire came to Garda attention on April 24 when he was seen, acting aggressively to-

wards another man and made an attempt to strike him. A day later he was causing annoyance at Boyds Car Park when he was found begging, and when Gardai arrived he became abusive. On September 18, the defendant broke into cars on Clanbrassil St and Market St. He took €200 from the car in Clanbrassil St and stole a handbag from the Market Street vehicle. The following day, Maguire was arrested for trespass at a vacant house in Dowdallshill, and on September 21 he stole a tracksuit worth €36 from Elverys and two packets of biscuits from Mace, Avenue Road. On December 7, Maguire was one of three men who broke into the Spirit Store shortly before 7am and stole two empty tills and a keg of beer.

Pepper spray had to be used when he tried to run away from Gardai at Jocelyn Street after he resisted arrest and obstructed officers. Maguire stole a bag of coins from a taxi driver who had taken him to the Castletown Road on January 6. Gardai managed to recover the €23 Maguire had taken from the car. The court heard Maguire has 63 previous convictions and many of the offences before the court had happened while he was on bail. Solicitor Conor Mac Guill stated that health issues meant his 35-year-old client could not do community service but he apologised for his actions. Judge Flann Brennan imposed sentences totalling ten months in respect of the charges.

Students encouraged to be positive Public Relations degree students from Dundalk Institute of Technology, in conjunction with Bodywhys: the Eating Disorders Association of Ireland, are encouraging secondary school students to participate in the ‘Let’s Be Positive’ three-day programme. ‘Let’s Be Positive’ will be held in schools in the North East from

Wednesday April 9 to Friday 11. Participating students will be asked to undertake a range of activities including listening to their favourite ‘feel good’ music and engaging in a ‘digital fast’ in an effort to encourage young people to think positively and be more aware of their mental health. This three-day programme designed by

Dundalk IT students encourages secondary school students to think proactively about body image and their mental health. According to the Growing Up in Ireland survey (2012), around 4 in 10 13-year-olds (43%) rated themselves as average in terms of their physical appearance and over a quarter (27%) rated themselves

as below average. Although the majority of young people said they were currently trying to stay the same weight (doing nothing about changing their weight), girls (39%) were more inclined than boys (30%) to report that they were trying to lose weight, while boys (8%) were more likely than girls (3%) to be trying to gain weight.

Annual Spring Mountain clean-up

in Brief

The local Campbell/Donnelly Sinn Fein Cumann in Cooley recently held their Annual Spring Mountain Clean Up. Despite the heavy rain showers 15 people turned out to help ,not only clean up but to also help highlight the damage this can do not only to the environment but to the tourist and farming industry. Cllr Jim Loughran, who took part hit out at those responsible saying that “Tourism is such a vital part of life on the Peninsula and that we must portray ourselves in the best possible light. We already have some of the finest scenery in the country and the last thing we need is for it to be blighted with dumped rubbish.I believe that through education we can help defeat this problem and i applaud the efforts currently ongoing in schools towards this end.I would also like to extend my appreciation to all who turned out today, some who are on their second clean up today having took part in a school event earlier on”.

Family renew bid to have David home Continued From Page 1 aware, but cannot communicate verbally due to paralysis effecting all his muscles, with the exception of his eyes. He communicates with his family with special eye movements In 2002 David has a stroke while on holiday and on return discovered he had a (Cavernoma cluster of irregular blood cells) on the brain. After a series of operations to remove the Cavernoma he was diagnosed and has been fighting to go home and lead

as normal a life as possible ever since. He first wrote to the HSE in November 2013 one year after he went into hospital. He described the loneliness he felt and pleaded with them to not let him spend another Christmas there. “It is so depressing seeing my family leave me here every day, you have no idea how much I want to go home,” the letter reads. He says he does not know how much longer he can stand it. However 12 months on David is still in a ward in Beaumount Hospital, again he wrote to

the HSE painting a picture of what his life is like in the ward; “Can you imagine waking up and the first thing you see is a ceiling, you will see that same ceiling for the next few hours until a nurse comes and moves your head.” All he wants is some happiness in his life and this will not be administered by any doctor in any hospital, only by his loving family in his home. The HSE claim it is too expensive to allow him to be cared for at home. His family insist that this is not the case as it costs as much as €1,900

a day to care for him in hospital as well as taking a bed that could be used for an emergency patient. Lisa, David’s sister says that the family home is almost entirely prepared and suitable for his future care needs, all the members of his family and her own fiancé have undergone extensive medical training so that he can be safely cared for, and despite being told that going home will add years to his life, the HSE have once again denied the move home. The Garvey family have pursued other avenues but

the Louth County Hospital they are told do not have the equipment nor the staff have the skills to care for David. Their latest negotiations with HSE failed and they have since been directed to seek emergency funding. All the while David is suffering, growing increasingly depressed and desperate to go home, even for weekend visits. His family are afraid that the constant stay in the hospital environment will significantly reduce his life span and believe that the only way to improve his life is by taking him home.

Man had knife to tend to horses A man who was found with a knife in his car, told Dundalk District Court that he didn’t inform Gardai that he used it to tend to horses, because he didn’t think they would care. Niall Cooney, 37 Riverside Drive, Dundalk, who was stopped by Gardai at the Demesne Rd, Dundalk, on May 25 last year, denied the charge of unlawful possession of knife, although he pleaded guilty to motoring offences. The court heard that when stopped the defendant, who wasn’t insured on the car, contacted his father who arrived

at the scene. The investigating Garda noticed a wooden baton in the car which the defendant’s father claimed to be the owner. The officer was told by the defendant that there was nothing else untoward in the car but on searching the vehicle, which had been seized, he found the knife. The defendant said he owned it but added that it had to be over three inches to be illegal. The Garda informed him that this was not the case. The defendant stated that he used the knife to cut bales for the horses which were kept on the Avenue Road. He explained that the

knife was kept in a holder which could be attached to his belt and that he mistakenly thought the knife was too small to be illegal. When asked by Insp Martin Beggy why he didn’t tell the Gardai this at the time, he revealed that he was distracted by the fact that they were taking his car and didn’t think they would care. Judge Flann Brennan stated that he was not satisfied that Mr Cooney had the knife for a lawful purpose but applied the Probation Act. He imposed a fine of €100 for failing to produce insurance and licence.

Helping hands needed

Louth and St Patricks footballer, Dessie Finnegan, is one of a number of local people getting behind a unique fundraising raising initiative. The imaginative idea involves an attempt being made to create a chain of hands up to the summit of Slieve Gullion mountain. It is the brainchild of local men, Owen Reel and Mickey Treanor as they aim to raise money for Newry and Mourne Diabetic Group, Southern Area Hospice, Musgrave Orthopaedic Unit and the Royal Victoria Hospital’s

Intensive Care Unit. Dessie Finnegan was among the large crowd at the launch of the event which has been scheduled for Sunday May Sunday May 4, and the organisers are asking for people from Louth to take part. “It should definitely be a memorable day which can not only raise funds for the four charities but generate a bit of community spirit and create a spectacular sight. Our plan to create a chain of hands through the summit of the mountain and we are ap-

pealing for all local people to come along and support this worthwhile event. “It’s open to all regardless of physical fitness level or mobility as we can slot everyone in where it suits them”, explained the spokesperson. The fee for participating in this fun fundraiser is £10 per adult, £5 per child or £30 per family and the event is on facebook and the twitter account is @HUSG2014. Sixth Class pupils at the annual spring clean

Pupils do their bit for spring clean week As part of the National Spring Clean campaign the boys of Monastery NS took part in a clean-up of the approach roads to their school and the general school environment on April 1. An Taisce provided bibs, gloves and litter pickers and the boys set eagerly to work. This year the boys of Sixth Class and the Environmental Committee picked up every piece of litter and left the approach roads to our school litter free. The clean up team was given great assistance by Ardee Tidy Towns Committee member Miriam Clarke and class teacher Dermot McCreanor. As part of its Green Schools programme Monastery NS was recently

assessed for a Green Flag on the theme of biodiversity. The Biodiversity Committee worked very hard with the assistance of teachers Ms McKeown, Mrs Loughran, Angela Connolly and Ronan Taaffe. Their work included a Vegetable Garden, the provision of a Wildlife Garden and outdoor classroom, Herb garden and the painting of a new wall mural. The school Environmental Committee also plans to create new nature trails in the future. Following the inspection by members of Louth County Council Environmental Section it was recommended that Monastery NS are now awarded a Green Flag for Biodiversity.

Pozdrawiam - Agnieszka

Social innovators get chance to speak out By Louise Delz

Two of Dundalk’s secondary schools participated in the Young Social Innovators Speak Outs this year. St Louis Secondary School and the De La Salle College both took part in the event organised by the Young Social Innovators. YSI is a non profit organisation that aims at giving young people the chance to make a change about social issues in their communities. St Louis

Secondary School’s Transition Year classes presented four different project ideas to the YSI judges on March 27 in the TLT, Drogheda. They presented their project with almost 70 TY students, their project ideas ranged from support for cancer patients families and child poverty to LGBT awareness and a project on befriending the elderly, under the title Our Senior Heroes, with their teachers Laura Walsh and Gina Rhatigan.

Many of the classes worked in close cooperation with local support groups such as Outcomers Dundalk for their projects. Each of the groups had two minutes to show their project idea to the other schools and the YSI judges. Their presentations included songs, mimes and the LGBT group got everyone in the TLT to stand up in support of LGBT communities worldwide at the end of their presentation. The YSI group from the

De La Salle went to Belfast on March 26 to present their project on obesity with a total of 40 students and their teacher Sarah McEvoy. They presented their project on obesity in a narrated play showcasing the effects of obesity and counter-measures students and parents can take to prevent obesity. Both schools will have a second time to present their project ideas at the annual YSI showcase on May 7 in Dublin.

helping each other with their designs and ideas and it has been a very worthwhile exercise I feel. “There is a lot of jobs out there in the computer industry and there is actually a shortfall of employees in that sector so this course is a wonderful opportunity for kids to follow and pursue that interest if they so wish”, explained Kieran. The children will go forward to the National Finals in Dublin castle on May5. Meanwhile the Grasta Christian School Open day will take place on May 13starting at 7pm.

NOVENA TO THE SACRED HEART

NOVENA TO THE SACRED HEART Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I asked you for many favours. This time I ask for this special favour (mention it). Take it, dear Heart of Jesus and place it within your own broken heart, where your Father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes it will become your favour, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for 3 days. Promise publication and favours will be granted. (Never known to fail). M.K.

Behold me kneeling at your feet Our Lady of the Sacred Heart. You know why I make this Novena. I come exhausted with fatigue to show you the crushing weights of my trials. You are powerful O Mary and can come to my assistance. (Here mention your request). I feel confident by the thoughts you can help. I have reason to expect any favour from a Mother who is at once so powerful in the name of the love which you ever had for your divine son. Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, Queen of peace, pray for us. This Novena will grant you any request. Publish prayer immediately. Also thanksgiving to the Sacred Heart. Thanks to the Sacred Heart for favours. m.m.

Special family fun day to celebrate Easter

Dundalk Tourist Office is organising a family focused ‘Cairde in the Community’ fun event in the Marshes Shopping Centre on Sunday April 13 to gather residents of Dundalk and surrounding areas for an Easter celebration. The event will commence at 1pm and will run until 4pm. providing families with a selection of entertainment throughout the day, including face painting and bouncing castles. Easter preparation would not be complete without Easter arts and crafts, thus two slots of children’s art workshops will take place; Easter Egg decoration and Easter card-making. The atmosphere will be enriched by the performance of Irish dancing group from Scoil Rince Ni Chonghaile and ‘An Acoustic Duo’-Shauna & Amy. The M4 Convertible is fitted with an Active M Differential which aids traction and directional stability, especially when accelerating out of corners.
