Organisers of last year’s Santa Run in Dundalk have received official confirmation from the Guinness Book of Records that November’s attempt to set a new world record for the world’s largest Santa Run more than a mile has been a success. A short email was sent to organisers yesterday morning congratulating everybody who helped. “We are delighted to confirm that we have successfully achieved a new Guinness World Record title for 'Largest Santa Claus Run'. We would like to congratulate and thank everyone who took part. You are Officially Amazing,” read the email.
The run from the Redemptorist Church to the Market Square required 4000 participants to break the record and that was done with ease as almost 5000 Santa’s were officially counted crossing the finish line. It is estimated that up to 7000 Santa’s actually took part in the run but not all had official tags. €60,000 was raised thanks to the Santa Run with proceeds going to eighteen local charities including Men’s Sheds, North Louth Hospice, SNAP, Lordship Children’s Respite Centre and SOSAD. Jimmy Cumiskey who was on the organising committee for the event was delighted that the Guinness Book of World Records Continued on Page 2

Lifeline for Women’s Aid after special meetings Both Louth County and Dundalk Town Council have directed €15k of funding each to Women’s Aid Dundalk to prevent the refuge closing in June. While the funding will remove the immediate threat of closure, it does not solve the long term problem of stabilising funding for the refuge. At two special meetings held last week both councils agreed to donate €15k each and the council members declared a no confidence vote in the Government Directive which Dundalk Town Council say limits the funding that they can offer to the refuge.
The council now plan to petition the Government department to provide the funding required to keep the women’s refuge open for the foreseeable future. An online petition has been ongoing since Women’s Aid Dundalk announced the date for the closure of the refuge three weeks ago. To date it has amassed more than 2,100 signatures, and been shared on more than 1,200 pages on social network pages. Women’s Aid Dundalk announced that they would be forced to close on June 27 due to cuts to the funding of the refuge’s running
costs. The agreement to donate €30k by the two councils will keep the doors open until the end of the year only. Speaking at the time of the announcement a spokesperson for Women’s Aid Dundalk stressed the importance of being able to know how much is coming in so they can effectively budget the running costs. If the Women’s Aid Dundalk are to avoid facing closure again a sustainable solution must be found. Sinn Fein’s Gerry Adams called on Louth representatives from all parties to use their influence to undo
the devastating cuts. “The decision by the two Louth Councils has provided an opportunity to campaign to reverse current government policy and I would urge all county Louth representatives, but especially government TDs and Seanadóirí, to use their influence to secure government funding for Dundalk Women’s Aid,” he said. Housing Minister Jan O’Sullivan whose depart-
ment is responsible for the directive that ‘encourages’ caps on the amount spent said that she did not want any women’s refuges to close down. Women’s Aid Dundalk’s running costs are funded by the Department of the Environment via the Minister for Housing and administered by the local authorities homelessness forum. In 2010, Women’s Aid ran on €82,782. In 2011 and
2012 the refuge was given €96,300 each year under ‘Section 10’ which refers to the section in Housing Act 1988 that legislates for the provision of funding. On July 9 2013 the refuge was told they were to suffer a 53% reduction, more than they could sustain and negotiations with the local authorities ensued. However, Jan O’Sullivan has stressed that her department has not cut funding and

word that we have indeed broken the previous world record” enthused Jimmy. “It was such a huge success and I’m so happy that the whole town got together to create such a massive buzz around the place
and it’s great that their efforts have been recognised officially with the World Record. Of course the main aim of the event was to raise money for local causes and we were delighted to be able to hand over €60, 000 to many lo-

that there should be no changes as funding levels remain at the same level as last year. But this does not explain how the amount of funding has plummeted to only €20k in 2014. Dundalk Women’s Aid for now may have been saved, but until a regular funding stream is secured and an understanding of how with ‘no cuts’, this refuge suffered such a huge finaincal challenge, it is not yet safe.
explains, a nasty knee injury scuppered his dream. “I absolutely love running and have ran in countless 5k’s and 10k’s about the place but got it into my head that I’d love to complete a marathon. I suppose that’s the ultimate goal for every runner out there and three years ago I decided that I’d go for it. “I had all my training done and I was raring to go but unfortunately three days before the marathon I fell and cut my knee on glass which obviously put an end to my hopes of completing a marathon,” explains Stephen. “The next year I applied for the London City Marathon but didn’t get in as there are so many other people trying to get in as well. Then last year I was made PRO for the Louth GAA County board and the workload was pretty hectic which meant I had no chance of getting ready for a marathon. “Towards the end of last year I once again applied
for the London Marathon and I was delighted to get word that I’d made the cut. The rules state that you have to raise at least £2000 for a children’s charity in the UK called Clic Sargent and I had already decided to fundraise for the Maria Goretti Children’s Respite Centre in Lordship” noted Stephen. “Thankfully the fundraising went well and I raised over €2000 from my online fundraising page which went to Clic Sargent. I also held a 5k run around Dundalk in March which also raised over €2000 and that all went to the respite centre in Lordship,” he added. Stephen spent the winter pounding the roads around Lordship as he put in the hard yards to get ready for the gruelling 26 mile challenge. On a sweltering day in London city Stephen set out on his journey and despite the heat he finished the race in an impressive 4 hours and 11 minutes. Finishing just four minutes ahead of him was ex England football international
Michael Owen who happily posed for a post race ‘selfie’ with Stephen. Stephen is already looking forward to the next marathon and is delighted that he was able to take part in one of the most iconic races in the world. “It was a fantastic experience running alongside 36,500 people and I have to say it was equally one of the best and toughest experiences of my life. I’m delighted to have raised money for the two children’s charities and thank everyone who supported me over the past few months,” added a delighted Stephen.
Santa Run will now set their sights on getting ready for the 2014 event.

Man refused to provide specimen after leaving party
A man who was leaving a party after a disturbance broke out was disqualified from driving for four years after failing to provide Gardai with a breath specimen. Tomas Connolly of 16 Road 2, Muirhevnamor, told Gardai that he would not provide a specimen after being arrested and brought to Dundalk Garda Station on February 2 this year. Insp Martin Beggy told the court that on that day Gardai had been called to an incident and came across the defendant at Doolargy Avenue. Their attention was drawn to the car as it had a smashed window. After speaking to Mr Connolly they formed an opinion but
the defendant failed to provide a road side breath test of sufficient volume. After being brought to Dundalk Garda Station, he stated that he was not giving a sample and signed a Garda’s notebook to that effect. Solicitor, Niall Lavery stated that Mr Connolly had been at a party in the locality when a disturbance broke out at a neighbouring property that did not concern him. He was only driving as he wanted to leave the area. Mr Lavery pointed out that he tried to provide a roadside breath test, but didn’t do so at the station.
Clann Naofa girls win Leinster title Three female boxers from Clann Naofa boxing academy Muirhevnamor had the opportunity to represent Louth in the Leinster Championship. Evelyn Igharo and Sisters Naomi and Shauna O’Callaghan gave a great performance in the Leinster girl’s Championship held in their home club. Evelyn is the current Irish champion and also held the Leinster championship going into the ring. Evelyn’s first opponent was Louise Fitzgerald from Offaly and she came out on top in the first round and it was a similar story against her Drogheda opponent in the second fight. Shauna O’Callaghan had fought Laura Kelly in the semifinal of the Leinster Championship so knew that she was facing a worthy opponent, but once again she came out on top. Shauna fought N. Dermody from the Paulstown club Kilkenny in the final and again her fitness and determination helped her once again emerge victorious in a nail biting performance. Naomi O’Callaghan entered the Championship as the Number 1 in Ireland and is a very deter-

mined boxer and exhibits very strong boxing skills and pursues victory in all her fights. Naomi’s opponents in this battle were very aware of her reputation and Naomi did not need to use much force to ensure victory. This saw her gain her second Leinster title victory and is now training hard for the return match to retain her All Ireland title. These very positive traits exhibited by all three Clann Naofa girls are wonderful assets to their club and are held in great respect

He added that the 25-year-old is currently studying psychology in Dublin and the loss of a licence will affect his ability to get employment. Judge Flann Brennan imposed a €250 fine and disqualified the defendant from driving for four years for his refusal to provide a specimen. Mr O’Connor also faced a no insurance charge, and although he stated he had insurance at the time, he had no documents to prove it and entered a guilty plea. Judge Brennan imposed a oneyear disqualification and a €100 fine, and agreed to postpone the driving ban until September 15.

A man who was asked to leave a night club was arrested after becoming abusive to door staff and Gardai. Nigel Martin of 63 Woodbury Gardens, Dundalk, pleaded guilty to a public order charge when he appeared at Dundalk District Court arising out of the incident on March 18. The court heard that at 12.25am on that date the defendant, after being asked to leave the night club, became abusive and aggressive towards door staff. Mr Martin, who was very drunk, was also abusive to Gardai and continued that abuse after being arrested. Solicitor, James MacGuill, stated that his client apologised for his abusive comments and pointed out that there had been a disagreement among his client’s social circle that night. He added that the 27-year-old defendant was intoxicated at the time. Judge Conal Gibbons convicted on a charge of being intoxicated in a public place and imposed a €50 fine.

Dundalk Clinic
Celebrating 2nd Anniversary W
ith more than 70% of dysfunctional eating habits caused by emotional issues, Motivation Weight Management takes a different approach to supporting people in their ambitions to lose weight. The clinic’s advisors go beyond the ‘eat better, exercise more’ solution and tackle why and how their clients eat, not just what they eat. Motivation Weight Management is ideal for anyone who is struggling to lose weight and wants to change their bad habits and improve their lifestyle. An initial detailed questionnaire helps reveal the clients ‘mental weight’, which refers to clients’ stress levels, self-image, emo-
tional stability and more. Through this, the advisor identifies the individual attitudes, emotions, habits and patterns of behaviour that are unique to each client and then can meet their specific needs. The triggers for eating vary and are rooted in emotional reactions, whether it is stress related or eating as a reward. Motivation Weight Management is not just a diet, its primary focus is on behaviour and emotions. By introducing new ways of doing things and thinking about things, the programme can change a client’s relationship with food by giving them the strength to change habits
and control emotional eating. A target weight is agreed with the advisors who, with weekly visits, will support clients through the process by providing tools, CD’s, books, and handouts tailored to individual needs. Over 20 sessions clients tackle the root causes of their overeating and find the mental strength to change unhealthy habits of a lifetime. Crucially, Motivation Weight Management help clients maintain their target weight once it has been achieved. The results for many have been staggering with clients achieving long term success in managing their weight.

A man who verbally abused Gardai and threatened to headbutt them is at risk of a jail sentence after his behaviour was viewed as unacceptable by a judge at Dundalk District Court. Judge Conal Gibbons told Gerard Joyce of 37 Doolargy Ave, Dundalk, that he would consider imposing 120 hours Community Service in lieu of three months in prison after considering a Probation Report. The court heard that on March 23 this year, Gardai were parked on Park St when the defendant approached them and told them to “f*** off out of town”. He was intoxicated and threatened to headbutt them on his arrest. In dealing with the charges against, Judge Conal Gibbons expressed sympathy with the plight
of Gardai in such situations. “When you get older, you become less understanding why young people behave like this. We expect Gardai to be out on duty in places where most of us wouldn’t want to be and they are put in danger and the idea that they are subjected to this abuse is extraordinary”, remarked the judge. “We are lucky to have a community-based police force and I don’t think it is acceptable that a citizen should encounter a Garda and speak to them in this way. In different places the reaction of the police would be different”, he added. Solicitor, Frank McDonnell, agreed with the judge’s sentiments but added that his 21-yearold client has ‘no wit’ and when
drink comes on board all sense goes out the window. “When he has too much to drink he tends to talk himself into trouble”, stated Mr McDonnell who added that his client never went beyond ‘talk’. Judge Gibbons stated that had this been a first offence he would take a more lenient view but that he had to consider a very serious response. “I am considering a custodial sentence as this is intolerable. I will consider a Community Service Report as he has too much time on his hands”, added the judge. He adjourned the case to June 25 and pointed out that it was up to the defendant to impress the Probation Service.

Mona receives lifetime achievement award Saturday, April 19 saw Mona Roddy-Lennon, one of the most celebrated dancers of her generation receive a ‘Gradam’ award from An Coimisiún le Rince Gaelacha, the world’s premiere Irish Dance organisation. For her services to Irish dance, Mona, accompanied by her daughters Ciara and Dearbhla, was awarded the ‘Hall of Fame’ award during a ceremony at the World Irish Dance Championships in the London Hilton
Mona Roddy and her daughters Ciara and Dearbhla
Metropole Hotel. “It’s wonderful to be recognised at such a level as Mam has sacrificed so much for
her beloved art-form,” says Ciara, Mona’s eldest daughter. “She won numerous titles herself as a dancer but she has
taught countless numbers of others, not just to compete, but to love Irish dance. “A reflection of this is the number of past pupils who have gone on to open dancing schools of their own and follow a career in Irish dance. She really is an inspiration to all of us, opening not just her heart to her dancers, but also her home.” Mona was especially proud to witness her two grand-children Katie, 11 and Oisin, 8, perform with the u13 ceili team
who scooped third place in London last week and take a coveted ‘globe’ back to Dundalk. Mona Lennon began dancing at age six with her dance teacher Pat Matthews and went on to become one of the most successful dancers in the world, winning every award in solo dancing. Mona brought three All-Ireland titles to Dundalk. At the time, this was the pinnacle of dance, as there was no such thing as the World Championships. There
was also only two agegroups for competition; Under-15 and Over15, so it was clearly no mean feat to win and retain the All-Ireland title in the late 1960s. On a non-competitive level Mona also represented Ireland abroad at a number of celtic festivals in Brittany and Spain, and also toured the USA, Canada, England, Scotland and Libya with Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann. Mona founded Scoil Rince Mona Ní Rodaigh in 1970 having obtained
her teacher’s certificate. Over the past 40 odd years, she has taught and nurtured dancers who have been successful at all levels of local, provincial, national and international competition. The school has been particularly successful in céilí dancing, and some of the school’s most memorable achievements at this level have included winning the Senior Ladies and Mixed Céilí competitions at the world championships four years in a row.
New bid to build Narrow Water Bridge There is hope yet for the Narrow Water Bridge project after the northsouth ministerial body has agreed to cooperate fully and support a new bid for European funding. Co Louth Senator Jim D’Arcy who attended the meeting said that such is the commitment the bridge could be underway within the next two years. Senator D’Arcy said that an application will be made for funding to the Special EU Programmes Body which opens again in May 2015.
Boosting its symbolic meaning and legacy of the bridge, if the funding is approved, construction could begin the following year, the centenary year of the 1916 Rising. Another meeting between ministers North and South is planned for June when it is strongly expected that any remaining issues will be resolved and significant progress can be made, Senator D’Arcy said. At the moment the criteria for compulsory purchases of land on
the southern side of the border at Omeath are being drawn-up. One of the major stumbling bocks in the previous attempt to build the bridge was concern about Louth County Council bridge management group having operational control in Northern Ireland’s jurisdiction. However, Senator D’Arcy says that this is no longer a problem as he has been assured by the Northern Irish Minister for Regional Development, Danny Kennedy. This breakthrough between the
two states could be the factor that clinches the funding for the project said Senator D’Arcy. “In terms of funding, the North South Ministerial body will declare their support in the June meeting and it will make the project low risks as far as SEUPB is concerned,” he said. Pending the outcome of the June meeting An Taoiseach Enda Kenny has also indicated that he is prepared to support the Narrow Water Bridge.

at Council decision While the Irish flag was being flown across Ireland and London it was being removed from Dundalk’s Market Square amid a row on banning the flying of the tricolour or any banner It began a week before Easter when Dundalk Town Council contacted a Sinn Fein official requesting that they remove the tricolour from Market Square. “This is not a Sinn Féin flag, it belongs to everyone. I am disappointed that the Council officials have taken this approach. We should all be proud of our history and celebrate it,” said Cllr Edel Corrigan. “Members of the Easter Commemoration Committee erected National Flags along the Easter commemoration route to St Patricks Graveyard, Dowdallshill, in the run up to the commemoration as has happened for many years,”she said. On querying the decision, Sinn Fein representatives say they were
Cllr Jennifer Green
told that flags had never been permitted at Market Square, which is at odds with statements from the local authorities which say that the ban was only implemented in December 2011 and aproved by a council vote. A statement from the local authorities on the matter said, “Dundalk Town Council do not permit the erection of poster/ flags /banners emblems at the Town
Square since December 2011 or at any Round-about or on any traffic sign structure.” “Council are happy to consider any application for the erection of such material on any other of its street furniture/infrastructure with the above exceptions.” However despite this statement, it appears that there are some occasions in which the Council will consider banners in Market Sq. Sinn Fein were directed to make an application for ‘Use of Market Square’ and later when questioned how a ban on “poster/ flags / banners” would impact Market Square’s participation in future national celebrations such as the Giro D’Italia and the coming 1916 Centenary it became clear that there was room for Market Square to be used and banners flown. “The local authority will if required consider significant events where there is advance notice and engagement as per
the Councils policy in regard to Event Management. The Giro and national commemoration ceremonies in 1916 will be in accordance with guidelines that may issue in respect of same.” Councillor Jennifer Green said that she was outraged with the move to curtail the public usage of the Market Square. Councillor Green said “this is a blatant attempt to restrict and eventually prevent the right of assembly at the square unless it suits the Council.” Referring to previous plans for Market Square she added “I would like to remind the Council and the public that it was thanks to a Sinn Féin campaign that we weren’t left with a monstrosity of a five storey building complete with an underground car park.” “If Dundalk Town Council have their way, the public’s right to this public amenity will be extinguished,” she said.

Husband and wife Dominick McGroddy and Lily Chen who reside in Termonfeckin in Co. Louth entered the Dragons Den recently to pitch their company ‘Lily’s Tea Shop’. The episode which was filmed in February will be screened this Sunday evening at 9:30pm on RTE 1. The duo stock a range of organic green teas that boast an impressively high content of antioxidants and having already signed a deal with two major independent health food distributors they were hoping to increase their sale and growth and sell to the UK and beyond. Dominic who made the pitch alongside his wife Lily admits that the experi-
ence was one of the most nerve wracking experiences of their lives. “It is a terrifying ordeal having to stand in front of the dragons and try to convince them to believe in your product. We actually practiced what we were going to say for about ten days beforehand so we were well prepared going in which helps,” explained Dominic. “Lily is originally from SouthEast China and she came up with the idea a few years ago to import tea from near to where she was born. She knows the suppliers very well so she is getting the best of fresh leaves,” notes Dominick.
“The tea we sell is quite different to Irish tea as they use full leaves rather than dust from the leaves like they do here. We encourage the use of whole leaves from which you can enjoy each different unique taste and keep the whole nutritional benefit. Also by drinking leaf tea, you help to promote a healthier, more natural and eco-friendly life experience,” he explains. Dominick and Lily spent forty minutes telling the Dragons their story and answering any queries the dragons had about their business. To find out how the duo got on turn on Dragons Den this Sunday evening on RTE 1 at 9:30.

Unfilled posts delay early intervention
Children in Co Louth are being letdown by the HSE’s Early Intervention Team whose purpose is to support children with disabilities and their families says Cllr Tomas Sharkey. There are currently 81 children in Co Louth waiting to see a Senior Occupational Therapist, however the position has been vacant for more than two years. Similarly, 79 children in Louth are waiting to see a senior clinical Psychologist, a vacancy
which has not been filled for the past three years. Nine children have been waiting for more than one year to see the occupational therapist, 34 have been waiting for more than six months. Occupational therapists are vital for a child to achieve independence through fine motor skills development and organising necessary equipment. 18 children are waiting under four months to see a Senior Speech & Language Therapist, a vacancy for which
has been unfilled for the past two years. “The government policy of resisting the recruitment of much needed staff is hurting children and families,” said the Sinn Fein Councillor. “The ridiculous part
of this story is that there are staff shortages in all three areas. “The cruel part of this story is that children on the Autism Spectrum Disorder and in need of pre-school assessments are being affected,” he added.

Local author, Christina George’s debut novel Rise of the Sidhe has been gaining popularity as an e-book and in now in the process of being published in hard-copy and hitting book stores near you. The local history researcher with the archives in Dundalk Gaol found herself a loose end when she lost her job in 2008. So having always harboured the desire to write a book she committed to the idea and began writing in 2010. Six months later the first draft was ready, but Christine was not. “I was so nervous, it took me four years to tell most people that I was writing a book. I only showed it to my mother,” said Christina. The former Dun Lughaidh student says that she has always had an interest in the fantasy genre and Irish mythologies. “I have always loved fantasy. Tolkin for Lord of the Rings and CS Lewis both used Irish mythologies to inspire their work. But they took it out of Ireland and transplanted it into their own worlds. I wanted to do something else and set it in Ireland,” she said. Rise of Sidhe is an Irish fantasy novel set almost 100 years ago, during the First World War and the 1916 Rising. “I wanted to set the story during an interesting and exciting time in Irish History, but it is fictional characters in a fictional town the west of Ire-

But there are some elements that local readers might recognise, “There is an old castle attached to the family manor, something like Bellews’ Castle at Dun Lughaidh. Roaches Castle and Cuculainn’s Castle were also inspirational.” The book centres around the deVerdun family whose lives are thrown into turmoil by the Sidhe, descendents of Tuatha de Dannan. School book rental scheme Thirteen primary schools in Co Louth are set to benefit for the extension of the School Book Rental Scheme. €8m is to be allocated over the next two years for the development of new schemes and the expansion of others. Schools will receive €18 per pupil in non-DEIS schools and €20 per pupil in DEIS schools in addition to their annual book grant. Labour Senator Mary Moran said that she had been contacted by schools in the constituency
who felt that their omission from the scheme was frustrating. “Following representations from schools currently operating the school book rental scheme who quite rightly, in my opinion, felt aggrieved that they were being penalised for having the scheme already, I lobbied the Minister, Ruairí Quinn, on their behalf,” she said. “We recognise that many parents struggle with the cost of equipping their children for school and enabling schools to set up book rental schemes should
go a long way in tackling these costs. I am delighted that thirteen schools in my constituency have been allocated a total of €300,000 to support the setting up of their book rental schemes,” said Senator Mary Moran welcoming the news. “As a former teacher I have always advocated in favour of book rental schemes for schools and I am delighted that all primary schools can operate a book rental scheme which will further reduce the back to school costs for parents,” added Senator Moran.

Demand for housing set to rise By Niamh Kirk
Dundalk is facing an acute housing shortage in the next five years a new report published by the Housing Agency last week has found. The analysis indicates that Dundalk town will need 1,088 houses in the next five years if it is to be able to meet the rising demand. The report which calculates the level of needs based on projected population growth in urban areas indicates that more than 2,500 houses will be needed across the county to support the growing population. Dundalk’s population is expected to grow by about
2,000 over the next four years. Ardee will see growth of 140 and there will be minimal growth in Dunleer, Dromiskin and Carlingford. The shortage predicted is particularly for three or less bedroom homes as family sizes shrink and more people are living alone. The report by the Government body the Housing Agency states that nearly 80k residential houses will be needed nationally. To ensure that the failures of the Celtic tiger building boom are not repeated, planning will be crucial. The last review of unfinished housing developments nationally was published in November 2012 and stated
that Co Louth had 5,916 unfinished houses in 104 incomplete estates. Among the total stock of houses, the report showed that about 10% of the houses were deemed finished and ready for occupation but were lying empty. Many more were classified as almost ready for occupation with minimal work needed to complete the project. In the report the problems presented by ghost estates were outlined and with three major unfinished estates surrounding Dundalk town, and five in total exempt from property tax, the problems have not gone away. The demand for housing
to suit the smaller family unit and single person however is not yet reflected in house prices in the county as a recent report indicates that prices for 1 and 2 bed houses is still falling, while 3,4 and 5 bed houses are rising. The daft.ie house price report for the first quarter of 2014 shows that prices for three bed properties have risen by 8.2%, while 4-5 bed properties have risen by 3.2%. The average house price in Co Louth is up by 1.3% to approximately €157k. During the property bubble, house prices were 58% more expensive than they are today.
Olympians attend Leinster House fundraiser Senator Mary Moran recently hosted a special fund-raising coffee morning in Leinster House. The event was held to raise funds which will assist members of Dundalk Special Olympics team when they travel to Limerick in June for the National Games. “I was delighted to have the opportunity to host this fund-raiser in Leinster House and to welcome some of the Special Olympic athletes and volunteers from Dundalk who travelled up. “On the day we raised €850 and I would like to thank everyone who contributed in any way. A particular word of thanks goes to Callan Quinn from Blackrock who baked and donated all the beautiful scones which went down a treat.
Joe Smith; Margaret Smith; Peadar McArdle; Cillian Moran; Philip Hoey; Kyle Norton; Rosemary Sheelan
The National Games in Limerick will include 1,500 athletes and Senator Moran is a huge supporter of the organisation. “I became involved with Special Olympics Ireland when my son Cillian started to participate in his local club in Blackrock. Over the years I have come to realise the enormous benefits which
people with an intellectual disability can gain from involvement in Special Olympics. “Through sport, athletes develop both physically and emotionally, they make new friends, realise their dreams, and know they can fit in. Special Olympics enables them to achieve and win not only in sport but in life too.”
Tourism initiative will create a sense of pride Louth County Council has launched a new Community Tourism Initiative for the Diaspora which seeks to build on the legacy of The Gathering 2013. The Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Michael Ring TD, officially launched the initiative to provide an annual fund of €1m over the
next three years to support up to 700 local community-based events and festivals each year around the country. Louth County Council will provide €30,000 over the next three years for this purpose. County Manager Philomena Poole stated that the initiative would help create a sense of pride and belonging.
“Every year we support many festivals, facilitate forums and engage with citizens to support them in community events. We want to develop our communities to make them sustainable to live in, give people a sense of pride and belonging and encourage visitors and commerce. “Pride in Place and Pride in
Community is at the heart of what we do in Louth County Council, and reaching out to and re-connecting with our Diaspora is a very important part of our work with our communities,” continued Ms Poole. The amount awarded will be based on the number of overseas visitors attending
events. The minimum offered is €500 and the maximum €3,000. Louth County Council will seek applications for support from local community events from today, with a closing date of 9th May. For further information please see www.louthcoco.ie or contact by email at tourism@ louthcoco.ie.

The irregularities emerged when a pensioner was sent a letter from the housing department stating that they were in arrears to the sum of €2,500. However the tenant in question had kept detailed receipts of all payments and could prove that rent was fully up to date. After investigation more cases emerged. In response Dundalk Town Council offered four weeks free rent to those who had been impacted by the issues and stressed that they did not desire any tenant to be adversely affected by the problems.

World Championships success again for Scoil Rince Móna Ní Rodaigh Dundalk’s own Scoil Rince Móna Ní Rodaigh once again scooped the top prize during the 8 day ‘World Irish Dancing Championships 2014’ in London over Easter. In what proved to be the school’s most successful in recent years, dancers scooped a total of five trophies and 79 medals. All of the 50- strong squad who travelled to London came home with a medal, cementing their status as one of the greatest dancing schools in the world. Success in solo dancing saw Eoghan Murphy place 4th in the u19 Men’s category & Alannah Murray 12th u17. Katie Lennon, Niamh McDowell, Roisin Mc Manus and Lindsay Carolan all made the final round and saw them place from 24th – 35th respectively. No mean feat in competitions of up to 200 dancers from over 20 countries. Speaking about the event, teacher Dearbhla Lennon explains “In order to compete at World level, dancers must qualify through regional heats. Simply to participate at the championships, these local dancers had already beaten off stiff competition. To place in the top 50 at the World C’ships really solidifies their place amongst the elite in Irish dancing. We’re incredibly proud of how all of our 18 solo dancers
danced at the event.” The celebrations started early as the U11 teams (Sub-Minor) took to the stage on Monday, April 14th and were awarded 3rd (mixed ceili) and 7th (girls ceili). Placing in the top three in any competition means the honour of winning the most coveted of all trophies – the globe. Tuesday, saw the U13 teams receive the same places once again – 3rd in the mixed ceili and 7th in the girls out of over 60 teams from all over the world. The major excitement came on Thursday as the U16 teams took to the stage, their performances sending shivers down the spines of those who watched. With some seriously convincing scores, the U16 mixed Ceili were crowned World Champions 2014. The girls team were placed 5th, again a wonderful achievement, beating over 60 teams. The second U16 team were also awarded recall medals. More medals followed on Friday as the u19 girls team took 9th place and the weekend was rounded off nicely on Easter Sunday as the Senior Mixed Ceili took silver, winning yet another ‘globe’ for the school. “The journey to this year’s World ‘Chips was an especially difficult one” says Dearbhla “as our school was hit badly by injury in the run up to the
event. We had several breaks, stress fractures, torn/trained ligaments and sprained ankles. There were many sleepless nights spent trying to figure out how we were going to get through it all. But we managed in the end. We have a sister school in the USA and we were forced to ‘borrow’ some dancers from them! All’s well that ends well however as all the dancers, who had worked so incredibly hard were able to compete in London. We would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of all of our students and their parents who sacrificed so much to achieve these successes”. The school, which has classes in Dundalk, Crossmaglen and Drumconrath is led by legendary Dundalk dancer Mona Roddy –Lennon and her two daughters Ciara and Dearbhla Lennon, all of whom were in London to keep the show on the road. “A big thanks to our former pupil and Prodijig star, Darren Casey (who lends a hand at the school) for being there throughout the week to help with rehearsals and keeping dancer’s nerves at bay!” says Dearbhla Next up for the prolific dance school is the Irish National Championships which take place in Dublin in three weeks time.

Brendan’s ‘voice’ in grand final Brendan McCahey has made it through to the Grand Final of The Voice having once again wowed the judges with a rendition of the Sam Smith song ‘Stay With Me’. The judges were so impressed with Brendan’s beautiful piano-led version of the song they awarded him the highest score so far in the series with an impressive 28/30. Brendan, who is part of Team Bressie, will battle it out in next Sunday’s grand final against Kellie Lewis, Laura May Lenehen and Jamie Stanton. He has been considered to be the favourite to lift The Voice of Ireland title having impressed judges from his very first blind audition. The Shercock man has strong local
connections having worked in Conor Hughes ‘Beat it’ shop in Blackrock for years. Writing on his Facebook page, Brendan once again thanked everybody who had supported him so far and spoke of his excitement upon reaching the final. “I don’t know about your nerves guys but, mine were on the edge. Only YOUR votes helped me get through last night. Again, your support has been nothing short of amazing. We were sorry to lose Paddy and Jay,” noted Brendan. “As we are down to the final four our schedule is getting that little bit busier this week with rehearsals and recording, but it’s all great fun. We will each be performing a song
with a different famous Irish guest artist this week as well as a group song and a song from our ‘live shows’. That all said, the lines will open from the beginning of the show and it’s really going be a brill time,” he explained. “We’ve had such an amazing time and this show has given me the platform I needed to go on to bigger and hopefully better things. I hope you will continue on the journey with me as I try to establish myself as the artist I always wanted to be. Your kindness and generosity has been invaluable and I owe you my gratitude. Thank you all. Here’s to THE FINAL....best B,” added Brendan.
West End Star to appear in Spirit Store To celebrate the release of his debut singler on June 2 this year, West End Singer, AJ Lewis, will be performing in The Spirit Store on June 3. AJ has enjoyed a varied career with highlights that have included being under consideration for Eurovision selection,
starring in the West End musical, Thriller Live, taking on the lead role of Michael Jackson and wowing audiences with his vocal talents. He has also appeared in shows all over Europe as well as at the West End that include him starring in Soul Train, Joseph
and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, Dancing in the Streets, Blues Brothers, Show Boat, Jerry Springer the Opera, Porgy and Bess and Up Against the Wall. AJ has performed at the Royal Albert Hall, Royal Festival Hall and was also part of Channel 5’s
“Don’t Stop Believing Supergroup”. People that have seen him perform live have been blown away by how talented an individual he is. AJ was brought up in Southampton and currently lives in London, but he has Irish roots.

Cully & Sully are set to return to Vantastival this year as sponsors of the incredibly popular Campervan Cook-off. The cook-off poses a colourful spectacle as a circle of vintage VW campervans take part in a ‘ready, steady, cook’ style competition with each contestant producing a two course meal from a list of provided ingredients, using only the cooking facilities in their campervan. Fun-loving makers of soups and pies, Cully and Sully will be bringing their own campervan to Bellurgan Park on Sunday May 4 to compere and judge the competition, which will take place at 3pm in the main arena. One of a number of quirky features at Vantastival, the Cook-off always draws a large crowd and there is fierce
competition amongst the campers taking part. This year the festival has also declared May 4 “Star Wars Sunday” and campers are encouraged to dress up as their favourite Star Wars character for the day. May The Fourth Be With You! Vantastival takes place at Bellurgan Park over the May bank holiday weekend May 2 to 4. The festival is known for its chilled out vibe and friendly atmosphere as well as the diversity of its music. Tickets are on sale now at €95 for three nights camping with no charge for bringing a campervan and tent campers are also welcome. Sunday day tickets are available at €45. Vantastival is also a BYOB event. See www.vantastival.com for full line up and more details.

novena NOVENA TO THE SACRED HEART Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I asked you for many favours. This time I ask you for this special favour (mention it). Take it, dear Heart of Jesus and place it within your own broken heart where your Father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes it will become your favour, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for 3 days. Promise publication and favours will be granted. (never known to fail). G.M.

This year’s Annual Michael Morgan Quiz was one of the most successful yet with a total of 28 teams packing out the club bar and raising over €1,100 for the injured players fund and once again proving the popularity of this prestigious quiz night. Organisers were deeply grate-
ful to those from inside and outside the club who made it such a great night. A beautiful handcrafted bronze clock for each member of the winning team was sponsored by Denise Morgan. The top team on the night was Sheila’s Supremes with 63 points out of 68, a full six points
clear of the chasing pack. The team have been long time supporters of the night and have come close a couple of times before, but this was their first time to capture the prize The most original team name award went to the rather witty if politically incorrect, ‘Oscar hasn’t got a leg to stand on’.

Hoax call referred to Gardaí A hoax call from Dundalk, which claimed that a 14-year-old had gone into labour and saw an ambulance attend the scene has been referred to Gardai. The call was made to the ambulance services on April 1 but when the paramedics arrived at the home it turned out that the 14-year old was
a dog having pups. With the emergency services already stretched and concerns about ambulance cover high, hoax calls can have serious consequences, for those relying on emergency response and for the hoaxers. A spokesperson for the HSE said that ‘Hoax’ calls to the National
Ambulance Service have the potential to delay a response to a serious emergency and can put the public and crews at risk while responding to such calls. The National Ambulance services are understood to have referred the hoax call to Gardai for investigation. Recent statistics
show that there has been a dramatic increase in hoax calls to emergency services throughout Ireland. All calls made to the emergency services are recorded. In 2007 there were 655 hoax calls to the ambulance services, but in 2012 the number had rocketed to more than 4,300 nationally. free coaching workshops to 600 grassroots coaches nationwide, which will deliver best practice for the coaching of Small Sided Games (4 vs. 4 and 7 vs. 7), aimed at developing skills in young players. Boys and girls (under 8, under 9 and under 10) will participate in a range of exciting Future Football events that will be rolled out over the coming months. McDonald’s FAI Future Football events to take place in 2014 include 24 community Fun Days to be held in 24 locations around Ireland, supported by McDonald’s. A Future Football competition will also take place, with winners from the regional final days to participate in the McDonald’s Cup Final, which will
be held in the Aviva Stadium in October 2014. Republic of Ireland player and Sunderland FC Captain John O’Shea today said; “I am delighted to launch the McDonald’s FAI Future Football programme this year. Development of the game at grassroots level is something that I am passionate about. Kids playing today will be the next generation of Irish footballers and it’s crucial that we equip them at an early age with the skills necessary to go the distance. Local clubs are the lifeblood of the sport and it’s fantastic to see McDonald’s and the FAI in partnership, delivering a robust development programme.” Further information, visit mcdonaldsfuturefootball.fai.ie
