LOUTH TD Peter Fitzpatrick spoke of his relief at ‘only’ breaking his hip having been involved in a nasty accident during last weekend’s 100km ‘Opt for Life’ charity cycle. The former Louth football manager was taking part in Joe Brolly’s 100km charity cycle from Dundalk to Mullingar in aid of Temple Street Children’s hospital when the accident occurred on Saturday evening. Speaking on Tuesday having just been released from Tullamore orthopaedic hospital Deputy Fitzpatrick described the horrific incident which has left him with a plate and pins in his shattered hip.
“I was actually near enough finished the race approaching Kells when I just touched the wheel of the fella in front of me and went flying off my bike and straight onto the road. If there had of been a car approaching I was a goner and I suppose I should be grateful that it’s just the hip that is broken”, noted a relieved Fitzpatrick. “They rushed me to Mullingar hospital and it turned out that the ball attached to the hip was broken having taken the full impact of the fall. I have to say it was the worst pain I have ever felt but luckily I’m young and pretty fit Continued on Page 2

Plenty of activity for pupils By Paul Byrne
There was plenty of activity in Realt na Mara school on Friday morning with the pre-school holding a fundraiser for Temple St. Children’s hospital while the main school celebrated book week by dressing up as their favourite characters. Rosie Hale, a supervisor in the pre-school decided to hold a coffee morning along with the annual ‘dress up day’ in an effort to make a few more euro for the Temple St Children’s Hospital. “We hold a ‘dress up day’ every year where the children come into pre-school in fancy dress as a fundraiser for the hospital. This year we decided to also hold a coffee morning and we invited the parents down to have a cup of coffee and a bun to raise a bit more for the hospital”, explained Rosie. “We’re also having a raffle for a hamper packed full of goodies from Boots and we are selling tickets for that for the next couple of weeks so if anybody would like to help our fundraising efforts they are more than welcome to drop down and buy themselves a ticket”,

added Rosie. Meanwhile across the yard in the primary school children from all classes dressed up as their favourite book characters to help celebrate book week which has been taking place all week. From Jane Eyre to Miss Piggy, characters and authors were brought to life in all classrooms and according to Miss Lally
the children and parents did themselves proud with their fine efforts. “The children have put great effort into their costumes today and they have done a great job”, noted Miss Lally. “Book week is a very important event in the school as it helps encourage the children to pick up a book and read and help create a
healthy interest in all things book related”, she explained. “We’ve been busy all week marking the event and we’ve had debates and book quizzes as well as the fancy dress today. We also brought 2nd and 3rd classes up for a trip to the library and some of them joined up for the very first time”, she added.

looking very likely that we will get them back at this stage. The men made the baskets in the shed themselves and put a lot of time and effort into them so it’s not very nice that we would be targeted like this. Unfortunately that’s a sign of the times we live in”, added Peter. The Louth Men’s Sheds project started by
the Netwell Centre and Louth County Council targets men at risk of isolation or experiencing major life changes. The project is very simple and has one criteria, men. The ‘shed’ environment encourages men to share skills and learn new ones for example, skills in wood turning, mechanical work and horticulture,
to name but a few. Socialising is a large part of the project too, providing opportunities for the development of new friendships as well as the renewal of old ones. If anybody has any information on the stolen hanging baskets they are asked to contact gardaí at Dundalk garda station.

U n scrupulous thieves have stolen eight hanging baskets from outside the Men’s Sheds in Seatown. The beautiful hanging baskets were filled with flowers and were designed and arranged by the men in the sheds. They were put outside their premises in Seatown to add a bit of colour to their building and according to Peter Gray, who has been involved with Men’s Shed’s since it’s inception, they were taken either Monday night or early Tuesday morning (May 12 or 13). “We came in on Tuesday morning as normal and we noticed that the eight hanging baskets which we had only recently put up had all been stolen. They were taken either late on Monday evening or early on Tuesday morning so if anybody seen anything suspicious at all around the area at that time we’d be grateful if you could let the Gardaí know”, explained Peter. “The Gardaí have already been down and unfortunately it’s not
to mark special anniversary LANNLEIRE GFC are this year celebrating the 50th anniversary of the official opening of their playing grounds at Pairc Ui Mhuiri, Dunleer. The ground is named after Fr. Larry Murray, Parish priest of Dunleer (1938-1941). Fr Murray helped with the founding of Lannleire G.F.C. and will probably be best remembered for the large part he played in the success of the Louth minor football teams from 1934 to 1941, both as chairman of the selection committee and as trainer. In that period the Louth minors figured in seven Leinster finals and three All-Ireland finals, with the 1940 All-Ireland victory over Mayo
being Louth’s last success at this level. To mark the occasion the club are holding a couple of events next month, which coincides with the opening of Pairc Ui Mhuiri in June 1964. At Ardee Golf Club on June 13 Lannleire will hold a Golf Classic which will also act as a fund raiser for the club and then the following night at The Grove House, a dinner dance will be held. Chairman Tommy Farrelly is hoping that all supporters and the community as a whole will support both events and from which a great weekend’s entertainment can be expected for all who attend.

Disqualified driver is now back on his bike A man who obtained insurance despite being disqualified from driving now uses a bicycle to get to work. Arturas Sprindys of 6 Roebuck, The Loakers, Blackrock, admitted making a false declaration by not informing the insurance company that he had been disqualified for two
years after being convicted of drink driving. Dundalk District Court heard that at 2.16am on March 18, 2013, Gardai were called to a traffic accident at Finnbair Crescent, Dundalk. A car had crashed into a fence and was abandoned. Gardai called to the address of the registered own-
er, who had the keys of the car and was intoxicated. He admitted driving the car. A certificate of insurance was produced but the Garda became aware of a previous disqualification and contacted the insurance company and discovered that he had declared this information. Solicitor Conor Breen
stated that his 27-year-old client was a Lithuanian national who had been in Ireland for some time. He said that he shouldn’t have been driving but that he had gone to buy cigarettes. He added that his client apologised and that he understood the significance of being disqualified. He added that he undertakes
not to drive with alcohol or without insurance, and that he now goes to work on a bicycle. He pleaded guilty to making a false declaration to obtain insurance, driving without a licence and having no insurance. The case prompted Judge William Hamill to hit out at insurance companies for
not doing more to ensure safety on the roads. “If the Garda hadn’t pursued this matter, it would have been presumed that he was covered. Insurance companies protest that they are interested in road safety but the information is there and they don’t take it up because they can get money presumably”, he stated.

Man grabbed teens after drinking session A man who drank six cans of beer and shared a bottle of vodka was arrested by Gardai after he ‘grabbed the rear ends’ of two teenagers on a busy street. Seamus Lambe of 50 Cluain Enda, St Alphonsus Road, Dundalk, was given the opportunity to avoid a prison sentence after his case was adjourned for a Community Service Report. Dundalk District Court heard that on September 29 at approximately 11pm last year, the Gardai were dealing with the defendant when they were approached by three young girls who said he had grabbed one on the waist and
two on the behind before making inappropriate comments. The girls – two aged 15 and one aged 16 – were on Earl St going towards a teenage disco when the incident happened. In pleading guilty to two counts of sexual assault and one count of assault, Solicitor Roger McGinley stated that his client was very intoxicated at the time, and while that was not an excuse it explained why Mr Lambe behaved with less inhibitions. He added that the street was well lit and busy at the time, while the defendant, who has a number of previous convic-
tions, made no attempt to flee the scene. “He appreciates the very serious nature of the charges and I have explained what sentence his is looking at. Given the ragged nature of his previous convictions it would be foolhardy of me to say that he has got his act together and is not likely to reoffend but I do believe that he has formed a degree of resolution to mend his ways in the future”, added Mr McGinley. Judge William Hamill agreed to put the case back to June 18 for a Community Service Report.

POWER OF PRAYER
Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I asked you for many favours. This time I ask you for this special favour (mention it). Bush students working on the willow sculpture
During April students from Bush Post Primary School worked with artist Breda Marron on a willow sculpture. The challenge was to create a unique piece in the internal courtyard of the school. Breda combined the rich folklore of the area and the ethos of the school to create the concept of a ‘Dance Circle’. The ‘Dance Circle’ sculpture was inspired by the folklore of the Cooley Peninsula, where the Fairy Dance or ‘Rinceshee’ took place around a Whitethorn tree to celebrate the coming of summer on May 1. The sculpture also symbolises the interconnection of students, teachers and parents in the school environment.

Residents in desperate plea for help Residents in a Dundalk housing estate claim to be at their wits’ end after having to put up with a spiralling level of antisocial behaviou over the past two years. After experiencing the extreme end of antisocial behaviour. From one property broken into eight times, to another having to brick-up a shed that was overrun, the residents of Marian Park have appealed to the local authorities and Gardai for help but to no avail. Since the erection of fencing blocking-off a traditional thoroughfare from the Castletown Road into Marian Park four years ago walkers have diverted their route and are taking a shortcut through the front garden of a gable-end house. The once prim garden has been destroyed with tracks beaten into it from the volume of walkers. As well as having people walking through the garden at any time of day or night, large groups of people are gathering to drink and take drugs at an open space beside homes in the estate. The group are abusive, intimidate children and threaten people who ask them to be quieter or move on. One garden was taken over and used as a hangout, the level of rubbish build-up was significant and was set alight in revenge for the owner complaining; the shed was used as a drugs den with as many as 20 people using it at one time. The owners and surrounding residents are too afraid to confront
them. “They don’t listen or care when we do complain,” the embattled residents say. Many of the residents have a long list of complaints, children’s toys and garden equipment stolen, destruction to their homes, intimidation, rubbish and drugs paraphernalia littering the area. The groups are so comfortable in the garden and adjoining park that they order takeaways to be delivered to it, discarding the rubbish when they go. Some residents are suffering a relentless campaign of intimidation after confronting the group, causing one to leave his home for long periods and now regularly too intimidated to go into his own home. One property has spent more than €1,300 in the past year dealing with the destruction caused by the gangs. Residents say that a simple fence would alleviate many of the problems but they say their concerns are dismissed and they are now at their wits end. When Gardai do come the gang have an easy get away through a front garden. “We ring the Gardai, and if, if, they do come, the group just walk through the garden short cut and the Gardai drive on. You’d need two cars coming from both sides to actually catch them”, explained one man. Louth county council say they are “presently exploring whether this issue could be addressed under the Regeneration Project”

She represented Leinster in the Interprovincials during the Easter break and won three and a half points out of a possible five in Tramore Golf Club which contributed to an overall win for Leinster. This year was Deirdre’s 15th year to
represent Leinster and her ninth Interpro victory. Deirdre is a past Irish Champion and has represented Ireland on numerous occasions being part of a winning Home International team in 2004 when she captained the side.
All at St Louis are very proud to have Deirdre as a member of staff and to cap the Easter holiday off Deirdre won the prestigious Vaughan Scratch Cup at Lahinch to see her lead the Scratch Cup circuit for 2014.

Bell X1’s Dave Geraghty is bringing his new outfit Join Me In The Pines to the Spirit Store Dundalk on Friday June 6. Bell X1’s David Geraghty released his debut solo album ‘Kill Your Darlings’ in 2007, to critical and fan acclaim. The album was also nominated for a Choice Music Prize that year. 2009 saw Geraghty return with his second solo offering ‘The Victory Dance’. Both of these albums were written and recorded between stints in the hectic Bell X1 touring schedule. Similarly, Dave’s new project, ‘Join Me in the Pines’ was written and recorded over a year and half while on and off the road. JMITP is a return to the somewhat isolated creative process under which his debut album was made. This time around the process benefits from a newly built home studio, (which was tried
and tested on the demos for Bell X1’s “Chop Chop” album). Included in the new studio’s arsenal of instruments is a 200 year old Harmonium which was rescued from a local church. Once again Geraghty displays his musical skills on the new album by playing almost all of the instruments, although it was enhanced by some great talents from the trad, folk and classical worlds. Clare Finglass, who appeared on Dave’s first two albums, once again lends her voice to make one half of the backing vocal duo. The other half being Dave’s Mammy. The album was mixed by Phil Hayes, who has also recorded and mixed some of Bell X’s albums (Flock, Tour de Flock, Blue Lights on the Runway, Field Recordings). Tickets for the Spirit Store concert are €12.50 with doors opening at 8.30pm.

Clermont Chorale won three cups in Navan
Treble for Clermont Chorale Local choir Clermont Chorale took home three first prizes in Navan Choral Festival on May 11. The choir, under the baton of Irene Barr from Blackrock, was awarded
first prize in the Ladies Choir section, the Popular/Gospel section and finished off their day by winning the Rotary Club of Ireland competition. The adjudicators
praised the choir’s creativity, sensitivity and musicality, saying their performance of the gospel song “Didn’t my Lord Deliver Daniel” was “mesmeric”. The choir will travel to
Limerick at the end of May following an invitation from Limerick Choral Festival to perform in a gala concert in the city as part of the City of Culture celebrations.”
