THE devastated family of a man who died before Christmas has made an emotional appeal to thieves to return two watches he left for his young sons. The watches were taken in a burglary in Blackrock over the weekend and are of significant sentimental value as they were the final gifts given by Stephen Carroll to his sons, Senan and Keelan in the week before he passed away last November. The home that was burgled on Friday was that of Ian and Anita Carroll, the parents of father of three, Stephen. Among the items stolen were two watches with special messages that were intended for Stephen’s sons.

Stephen’s parents had been minding the watches for the boys until the turned 18 and each of the watches has been engraved with a personal message from their father. The thieves took a safe from the house during the raid which contained jewellery and the watches. Adele Carroll, Stephen’s sister said that the thieves would have got a substantial amount of jewellery but that all they wanted was the return of the two watches. An appeal and images of the watches have been shared far and wide in the hope that someone with a conscience would return them to the family who are said to be utterly devastated. Man stole three laundry baskets A man who stole three laundry baskets from a shop was intoxicated to such an extent that he had no memory of the incident. Noel McDonagh, 54 Grange Drive, Muirhevnamor, Dundalk, pleaded guilty to the theft of the three baskets, valued at €9.99 each, at Boyds, Clanbrassil St, on January 17 last year.

The 39-year-old separated father of five who has previous convictions for theft, was identified on CCTC. Solicitor, Conor MacGuill, stated that the defendant was intoxicated and didn’t remember the incident but was simply passing the shop when he took the items.

He was seen on CCTV and had the baskets when Gardai called to his house. He added that his client doesn’t have a drink problem but had kept some money from Christmas before going drinking on the day in question. Judge William Hamill imposed a €200 fine.

AMY Broadhurst’s dreams of representing Ireland at the World Championships in Sofia this April look to be in tatters after she controversially lost on the judges scorecards to Mayo’s world champion Ciara Ginty. Ireland’s two most promising female boxers met last Saturday evening in the IABA Youth Semi Finals in what was a highly anticipated clash between Amy, a double European champion and Ciara who became Junior World Champion in Bulgaria last September. Ginty was awarded the contest after four rounds of battle but the announcement was met with silence with most in attendance convinced Amy had won the fight. Amy’s father Tony who is also her trainer said he was still in shock following the decision, de-

scribing it as the ‘worst I’ve seen in over 25 years attending boxing matches’. “As a coach it’s your job to tell your fighter what they are doing wrong and try and get them to change what they’re doing to stop getting hit. After the first round of Amy’s fight I can honestly say I didn’t have anything to say to her”, explained Tony. “She was controlling the fight and was in complete control. Ciara had a big crowd from Mayo down supporting her and they were as quiet as mice as the fight progressed because Amy was dominating. After the four rounds everybody in the place expected Amy’s hand to be raised and the place went silent when Ciara’s name was called. Ciara’s a lovely girl and she’s a great boxer but she was in tears after the match and she and her trainer both knew she didn’t deserve the win”, he

added. Tony will now appeal the decision to the IABA and hope that Amy will be given a box off against Ginty next month to decide who goes to the World Championships. “We will just have to wait and see now”, sighed Tony. “Amy is down and was pretty emotional after the fight but the one thing that’s keeping her going is that she knows she fought a great fight against a World Champion and was without doubt the better fighter on the night.” There was also disappointed for novice Davey Maguire who was edged out by Colin O’Donovan from Togher in his semi final match. His trainer Tony Broadhurst praised Davey’s efforts claiming he had lost a very close contest which could have gone either way.

First taste of success for new local club Local fighters proved over the weekend that they are set for success when members of the DMAC club entered the first competition of the year the ‘Best of the Best’ held in Naas. Representing the club were former World Champion Sean O’Hare and International Fighter Catherine Pearson. Sean entered the U-18 brown-black advance division, he fought his way to the final where he came up against a Dublin fighter where he secured the Gold with a win of five points to one. Catherine entered the ladies brown-black section, in the semi final she met a competitor from a Northern where she held the lead of the fight for the majority of

Coastal Walkway

A new coastal walkway between Dundalk and Blackrock is being formed after a group of local volunteers spent the past few months clearing a path. The walkway which runs from Soldiers Point at the Navvy Bank right around to the Loakers in Blackrock is about 4km long. The area is known as the Lord Limerick Embankment. For the past three months more than 30 volunteers have cleared the brambles and undergrowth and the path is expected to be completely passable in the coming days. The coastal walkway boasts uninterrupted views of the Cooley Mountains and Dundalk Bay. The ultimate aim is to see the walkway developed into an amenity for the area and as well as the walking path there are hopes that a cycle lane may be put in place.

Over to you QUESTION: What is your favourite television show or character?

Declan McGuinness

Owen Gartland

Farid Mohammed

I’d have to say David Jason’s character Del Boy from Only Fools and Horses. He’s made me laugh so many times down through the years. He was a brilliant character.

My favourite is Barney. I like him because even though he’s a big dinosaur he’s gentle and he’s kind.

At the moment it is probably Arrow. It’s a DC comic character which has been made into a TV series. The main character is a superhero archer.

7

Elaine & Noah McParland

My favourite character is Ben Ten. It’s about a boy who has a watch and he can transform into alien creatures. There’s loads of different characters in it.

Dylan Fennelly At the moment it’s Brendan O’Carroll’s Agnes Brown from Mrs Brown’s Boys. I think he’s really funny in it and it has done really well over the last few years.

Credit Union closed on Saturday

Family makes emotional appeal for return of watches stolen in burglary Continued from Page 1

As a mark of respect on the first anniversary of the death of Det Garda Adrian Donohoe, Lordship Credit Union will close all day on Saturday January 25. For those needing to access the facilities, the Credit Union will be open on Friday from 11am to 4pm.

Dundealgan Athletic Club

Dundealgan AC training resumes on Wednesday January 8 from 6.45pm to 8pm for girls and boys from seven years upwards. New members are welcome. All enquiries to 087 6556030.

Stephen Carroll with his sons, Keelan, aged 8 on left, and Senan, aged 10 on right

The watches were two of only three items that Stephen wore regularly, the other being his wedding ring which is intended for his youngest son. Both watches are Omega: One is a Constellation model which is silver with a white face and it had the message ‘To Keelan Love Daddy x’ inscribed on the back. The other is a Seamaster model which has a navy face and has an ‘To Senan love Daddy x’ inscription. Both of the boxes came in red presentation boxes. Adele Carroll said that Stephen who lost his battle with cancer only

weeks ago had wanted to have something special for the boys to remember him by. “He really thought about it, he really thought about the message and which one of the watches was best for each of the boys”, said Adele. “It’s just absolutely horrendous, it is hard to believe that it happened. Just when you think things can’t get any worse, they did”, she added. Adele said that the timing was devastating. She explained that family thought that they had done the right thing by putting them in the safe. Sadly, they had an appointment to open a safe deposit box in a bank

earlier this week where they had intended to leave the watches. Stephen’s two sons have been made aware of the loss of the watches. “They are only little boys they have enough to deal with but we were all so upset we had to tell them”, said Adele. Ms Carroll appealed for the return of the watches though any medium such as dropping them into a church or if someone got in touch via an intermediary and the watches could be passed on. She said that the family do not want to prosecute all they want is the return of the watches which she described as utterly priceless and their last physical link

with Stephen. Adele said she is not sure how they would cope if they didn’t get them back. “We can’t not get them back, that’s just how we have to look at it,” she said. Anyone with information can contact Gardaí in Dundalk on 0429335577. Anyone in possession of the watches is free to drop them in the Dundalk Leader letter box day or night and they can be safely returned to the family. The family have also set up an email address for anyone who may have information to please get in touch, it is: stephenswatch@ gmail.com.

Advice for students As the deadline for the CAO selection approaches, Gerry Malone, representing Guidance Counsellors in the North East has offered some advice for students and parents. Students can apply for up to ten honours or level 8 courses or ten ordinary level or Level 7 courses. However Mr Malone says that it is vital to state your order of preference clearly. Students are reminded that they must apply for restricted courses by February 1. These are courses that may require an interview or aptitude test or portfolio assessment. However, if a student forgets to apply for these courses they can use a change of mind form which comes in to operation from February 5. They then have until March 1 to use the change of mind form to add

in their restricted course. Students must also apply for Higher Education Access schemes by February 1. This scheme allows some students who do not receive the required points to enter university courses. Not all students will qualify for the scheme so if possible speak to your guidance counsellor for advice. If you do qualify for the scheme, April 1 is the deadline for submission of supplementary documents. Students with disabilities are also asked to fill out a supplementary information form. This is done online with the CAO form when the student indicates they have a disability on the form. The supplementary form also allows students apply for the DARE scheme which allows students with disabilities gain entry to colleges on a reduced points

basis. Students must indicate they want to be considered for the Dare and NON Dare scheme. Gerry also puts people’s minds at ease by pointing out that if you make a decision in a hurry and have any regrets, the main change of mind process starts on May 1 and ends on July 1. This means that students can change their mind on any course they have applied for and apply for entirely new courses over that two month period, for no extra fee. The deadline for CAO applications is February 1 and students will apply for education grants through SUSI from the beginning of May. “The main advice to all students and parents is not to panic. Help is always on hand from the Guidance Counsellor,” said Mr Malone.

The second annual final of the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity was held at Dundalk Stadium on Sunday January 12. This is an annual event which takes place in January anywhere in the world that is inhabited by the Polish, as well as throughout Poland. Held on an all-day event designed to raise funds for specialist equipment for children’s emergency medicine and provision of decent healthcare for the elderly.

The heart symbol of Orchestra is one of the most recognised symbols for Polish people scattered throughout the world. Both Polish and Irish bands, dance groups, fighting champions in MMA and Brazilian Jujitsu, children’s corner, flea market and raffles along with traditional Polish fare were all enjoyed on the day. • Pictured are two of the organisers; Monika Rurka and Bobbi Rurka.

Louth Legends DVD is proving a great success

The recently launched DVD “Louth Legends of 57and St Mary’s Greats” is proving to be immensly popular and in great demand so much so that some outlets ran out of stock before Christmas. Copies of the DVD have been sought in areas a far apart as England, Australia

the USA and New Zealand. The DVD has been produced by Brendan Matthews who explained its appeal. “Being an eight-hour production it is not like your ordinary DVD that you sit down and watch from start to finish. It is more like reading a book where you take in so

much at a time or an encyclopaedia where one can refer to a particular item of interest by referring to the relevent chapter, which can be done quite easily”, he stated. Brendan reports particularly good feedback on the 1957 and the 1950 All Ireland Finals coverage where some of

the close up player imagery and commentary has never been similarly seen before. Also of particular interest are the live interviews with 14 of the county’s greatest players, many of whom stated at the launch how proud they were that this type of record of their achievements had fi-

nally been produced. The visual coverage of the DVD achieves its intended effect by leaving a lasting memory and impact of its entire contents on those who view it. For information on the DVD contact Brendan Matthews on 0873264733.

Mandate union hold annual meeting The annual general meeting of Dundalk branch of Mandate Trade Union took place in the ICTU Resource Centre, Clanbrassil St, on Monday January 13 with the following elected to serve on local branch council: Chairman – John Callan (Penneys); Secretary – Dessie Finnegan (Tesco); Treasurer – Mary O’Donnell (Tesco). The branch discussed the recent deci-

sion of Penneys to vacate the Long Walk Shopping Centre and considered it a major blow to retail workers in town. However the branch was confident that the 18 workers would be relocated to other Penneys outlets in the north east . Tesco staff in attendance gave an update on the ongoing construction of the new Tesco super store and reported it was well ahead of schedule .

Dunnes workers from town once again were critical of the company’s stance on unions, however reported a steady flow of new members in town. Divisional organiser Willie Hamilton thanked all who attended and six local shop stewards from Penneys, Dunnes and Tesco were elected to attend the upcoming mandate trade union in Killarney in April.

S I 2 Penneys P s Closure Dundalk retail has been c dealt a blow as Penneys s has announced it is closing its store in the Longwalk f Shopping centre. However p

it is understood that the store’s employees are to be f facilitated by being offered M relocation options and it is hoped by both the com- m pany and the union that no redundancies will take place. A spokesperson for Penneys said that the company is looking at redeployment opportunities for the 21 employees involved. They have also stated that they have no plans to open another store in the area in the foreseeable future. Among the reasons given by Penneys for the decision to exit the Shopping Centre after 20 years were that the store had not done as well as expected and that they had been influenced by the number of other retail closures in the area.

Gold medal for Louth team at national championships

Sunday January 12 saw the first Irish Cycling Championship of 2014 when Belfast’s Lady Dixon Park hosted the event. The rain soaked day made for a very muddy course with riders struggling to stay upright as they raced through forests and across grass and footpaths. It was an especially successful day for Cuchulainn’s Aidan MacDonald who claimed a bronze medal in the vets championship.

Aidan is no stranger to winning medals especially in mountain biking but this was a particularly epic performance where he had to work extra hard to hold off the defending champion, Peter McConville of Newry Wheelers. Also competing in the vets race where Gary Shiels and Johnny McCabe who finished 5th and 8th respectively. These three positions meant that Cuchulainn took the gold in the team prize. The result

Students take on Operation Transformation

Beginning this week, the students from St Louis secondary school will be taking part in a walking programme to promote fitness and healthy living in young people’s lives. Head of the student council Ms Orla Drumgoole and the students themselves have come up with the idea, and are promoting it within the student body. Every lunchtime during the week the students have the option of walking around the block where the school is situated for 15 minutes, alongside anyone who wants to take part. The aim is to make young peo-

ple more aware of their fitness and how important it is, as well as showing them how easy it is to do regular exercise. Just five 15-minute walks a week would amount up to over an hour of exercise. This combined a regular exercise routine would really benefit a young person’s health in the long run. The new scheme is an excellent opportunity for the students to take their health into their own hands. It is estimated that about one-third of children and adolescents aged six to 19 are considered to be overweight or obese, but by taking part in Operation Transformation, they could set themselves on the road to better fitness.

is €7 or €4 for senior citizens (but Matthews will provide two for one vouchers). Places on the bus are limited and so those who are interested in going should book a place early on 042 9378188 before Friday January 24 at 1pm. is testament to the depth of talent that has developed in Dundalk’s cycling. In the elite race Ray O’Shuaghnessey was an outside bet for the win, with the two outstanding favourites being defending champion of Banbridge Roger Aiken and Dublin’s Robyn Seymour. Ray had a great start and was in a group of four that formed behind run away winner Roger Aiken.

Unfortunately Ray suffered a puncture while half way through a lap and had to run with his bike to the pits. This difficulty pushed him to 12th position and while he fought bravely to finish in fourth he ultimately ran out of road before being able to move into the medals. Ray will now take some down time before ramping up his training for the An Post Rás in May, where he will once again be competing as Aidan McDonald in action party of the Louth team.

Melbourne heat proves a challenge for Ciaran By Paul Byrne

Ciaran Byrne knew better than most how tough it was for the tennis players in the Australian Open Melbourne last week as they struggled on court in temperatures that reached 42 degrees. The Louth Village athlete who signed a two-year contract for Melbourne Aussie Rules outfit Carlton is settling into life in Melbourne after spending Christmas at home. According to Ciaran his first few weeks at Carlton have proved challenging as he gets

Ciaran Byrne

used to the intense heat - and coping with life without his dog Charlie. “The first few weeks

have been very challenging with extremely intense training and conditioning sessions

but that’s what I signed up for and I’m already enjoying the challenge. I’m staying with a host family just 10 minutes from the club which is easy and the family and accommodation couldn’t be any better. “Obviously I miss all my friends and family back home and it was tough leaving my dog Charlie but I’m enjoying the challenge and it should be an exciting time for me over here. “The training has really been tough for last two weeks mainly because of the very hot conditions. It wasn’t easy enduring tempera-

tures of 42 degrees in some sessions which for me as an Irishman was a battle never mind having to run in it as well. I usually love the sun but with high temperatures of 44 degrees I don’t think anyone could get used to that”, laughed Ciaran. If training in Melbourne’s heat is proving tough, Ciaran had to endure the opposite extremes during his pre Christmas training camp in Arizona where he met his new teammates for the first time as Carlton prepared for the new season at a high altitude training camp.

“Arizona was extremely cold with low temperatures of about -10 most days because altitude was so high. Training was really hard with a lot of hikes and mental toughness training, pushing ourselves to the limit every session. “My motto is ‘when you’re in hell keep going’ so I was determined to keep going through the pain. “The training camp was a great opportunity for me to get to know the boys a bit better and without a doubt it did as I’m now good mates with a lot of the boys,

especially the rookies”, explains the former St Mochtas star. Ciaran is starting to realise just how big Aussie Rules football is in Melbourne with open training attracting huge crowds as supporters get ready for a brand new AFL season. His aim for this year is to get stronger and adapt to the physical and tactical demands of playing professional Aussie Rules Football. He hopes to play consistent VFL (Victorian Football League) footie and hopefully some day make the break into the AFL team.

Students from Bush Post Primary School were on hand with their projects to explain to the committee why they were

selected as category winners. Bush Post Primary had two category winners making presentations to the committee at the meeting. The ‘mooboot’ was the brainchild of Conor Ryan, Stephen Woods and Stephen Lynch. Stephen Lynch was unfortunately unable to make the meeting but the other two students described in detail how the cow footwear works. Their teacher Emma Mc Mahon was with them and spoke about the stiff competition in the RDS for the Young Scientist Exhibition. Fellow Bush student Kevin Murphy and

his project ‘Comparing attitudes to MMA compared to the GAA’ also won a Highly Commended prize. Maire Ni Bhroite introduced each of the students to the committee and also welcomed their teachers and principals. Anger over laundry Louth darts teams impress being sent to Drogheda By Niamh Kirk

One year after the boiler in the laundry room of Louth County Hospital broke it was revealed this week that it still has not been fixed and that the HSE continue to taxi dirty linen from Dundalk to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital Drogheda. In March last year the HSE revealed that staff from Louth County Hospital were travelling to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital daily to unpack, sort, wash, dry, fold and return the laundry for the Dundalk hospital on the same day. At the time the HSE said

that the arrangement was a contingency plan only but 12 months later the steam boiler, which failed an ultrasound test, has not been repaired. Sinn Fein Councillor Tomás Sharkey who, at the time, suggested that the HSE would allow the situation to continue reacted angrily to the news that there are still no plans to address the problem. “I have asked the HSE to fix the boiler and to date this has not happened. Every day dirty linen is transported from Dundalk to Drogheda, laundered and transported back to Dundalk again. There is an

obvious expense involved here and I am sure the cost of repairs would have been cheaper”, said Cllr Sharkey. “I contacted the management of the HSE about this matter again last week and am disappointed at the reply. It seems that there is no plan to fix the boiler in Dundalk and start laundry work in our hospital. “The HSE says it is ‘investigating the feasibility of delivering laundry services through its existing infrastructure.’ I fear that the laundry service will not return to Dundalk unless the boiler is repaired,” he added.

The Louth Youth Panel for 2013/14 travelled to the Bailie hotel in Bailieborough County Cavan to take part in a new tournament which was designed to be a warm up for the All Ireland Intercounty event which will take place on March 7 to 9 in Ennis Co Clare . This event saw teams from Cavan Donegal and two teams from Roscommon take part as well as the Louth teams. The committee of the CLDO decided rather than an “A” and “B” team the Louth Teams would be called Louth Cuchulainns and Louth Setantas. This was done because of the closeness of the teams. The format was a Round robin which would lead to the top four teams entering

Darts league is back with a real bang

Dundalk Leader 22nd January 2014

16

The Tuborg Dundalk and District Darts league came back with a bang in the new year as all players seemed to have got a buzz from watching the events in the ‘Ally Pally’ and the Lakeside on television. All divisions were showing to be very tight and a single win could easily shoot a team up a division. January 9 saw the league resume and it proved to be a very interesting night of results. The Premier Division leaders the Stags started with a bye and the chasing pack wanted to gain some ground. McEnteggarts faced the Avenue Eagles and the game of the night had to be Damian Smith who was playing Owen Caffrey. Both men are well accustomed to hitting the treble twenty and it was hit with a lot of determination on the night. The crowd that gathered to watch were amazed that such high standard was on display so close to home.
Damian edged the win for McEntaggarts but it wasn’t

enough to prevent them losing the game to the visiting team. In the First Division Stags Green had been flying high in the first round of the league but seemed to falter at the start of the second round as they managed a draw with Courtneys Bar. The Avenue Celtic team has taken maximum advantage of the extended transfer period and have had more

signings than Robbie Keane. This policy seems to have worked for them as Michael McAlester is throwing great darts and he helped his team secure a valuable 5-1 win. The second division saw Fergusons travel to Commercial Hawks and a great night of darts was on display. Fergusons player Ciarain Crawley has since appeared on Channel Fours “Countdown”

programme but he was showing his darting skills as they raced to a 4-2 win. The second week of round two of the league saw The Stags take on Commercial 1896 and game of the night goes to Ian Rooney and Seamie Rice for a game that can only be described as TV Darts. Ian Rooney played well enough to win the match but it was the Stags strength in depth that won it for them. In another Premier Division match Simon Wykes demonstrated that he is on the way back by recording the highest checkout in the league this year with a 156 checkout. The First Division saw Harrys bar gain a good win over Oriel Active and in the Second Division the Castle Bar suffered their first defeat at the hands of Johnny Masons. The committee would like to remind all team captains the deadline for final signings and transferred is Thursday 30 of January.

Novena

NOVENA TO ST. MARTHA—O St. Martha, I resort to you and to your petition and faith. I offer up to you this light which I shall burn every Tuesday for nine Tuesdays. Comfort me in all my difficulties through the great favour that you enjoyed when Our Saviour lodged in your house. I beseech you to have definite pity in regard to the favour I ask. (Mention favour). Intercede for my family that we may always be provided for in all our necessities. I ask you St. Martha to overcome the dragon which you cast at your feet. One Our Father and three Hail Marys and a lighted candle every Tuesday and the above prayer made known with the intentions of spreading devotion to St. Martha. This miraculous Saint grants every thing before the Tuesdays are ended no matter how difficult. MMcG NOVENA TO THE SACRED HEART—Behold me kneeling at your feet Our Lady of the Sacred Heart. You know why I make this Novena. I come exhausted with fatigue to show you the crushing weight of your trials. You are powerful O Mary and can come to my assistance. (Here mention your request). I feel confident by the thoughts you can help. I have reason to expect any favour from a Mother who is at once so powerful in the name of the love which you ever had for your divine son. Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, Queen of peace, pray for us. This Novena will grant you any request. Publish prayer immediately. Also thanksgiving to the Sacred Heart. Thanks to the Sacred Heart for favours. A.C. NOVENA TO THE SACRED HEART—Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I asked you for many favours. This time I ask for this special favour (mention it). Take it, dear Heart of Jesus and place it within your own broken heart, where your Father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes it will become your favour, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for 3 days. Promise publication and favours will be granted. (Never known to fail). J.J.

OUR LADY OF MEDJUGORJE'S Dec 25, 2013 Monthly Message—" Dear children! I am carrying to you the King of Peace that He may give you His peace. You, little children, pray, pray, pray. The fruit of prayer will be seen on the faces of the people who have decided for God and His Kingdom. I, with my Son Jesus , bless you all with a blessing of peace. Thank you for having responded to my call." NOVENA TO THE SACRED HEART—Thanks to the Sacred Heart and Our BlessedLady for favours requested and granted. R.D. NOVENA TO THE SACRED HEART—Behold me kneeling at your feet Our Lady of the Sacred Heart. Gratitude to Our Lady St. Therese of Lisieux and St. Anthony for favours granted. M. McG.

The new Subaru WRX STI is coming this year. Subaru have commented that there will

launched at the Los Angles Motor Show in November 2013. The WRX STI is powered by a 2.5

litre (2,457 cc) turbocharged boxer four-pot engine, which produces 305hp and 290lb/ft of

torque. The six-speed gearbox has been reinforced and now adopts even shorter throw for more engaging experience. You still get Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive with VDC and Active Torque Vectoring to keep everything under control. The springs and dampers rates have been re-tuned to provide a more compliant ride while retaining body

composure. The electric power steering has been modified to give a more direct feel. The new Subaru WRX STI has a footprint of 4,595(l) x 1,795(w) x 1,475(h) mm. opel astra GTC

The Opel Astra GTC is now available with the new-generation, 200 hp 1.6 ECOTEC Direct Injection Turbo engine. This powerhouse also drives the Opel Cascada and Zafira Tourer and now completes the gasoline engine portfolio. With its powerful performance, it underscores the compact coupé’s sporty character – only the OPC variant is stronger. The Astra GTC impresses with the high-tech under its hood and its unique, sophisticated high performance strut (HiPerStrut) front suspen-

sion layout. Modern infotainment technology is featured in all GTC models, with the Opel IntelliLink system offering simplified telephony and navigation while enabling the use of many smartphone functions in the car. The new Opel Astra GTC with the 200 hp 1.6 ECOTEC Direct Injection Turbo engine reaches a top speed of 230 km/h. It accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in just 7.9 seconds and sprints from 80 to 120 km/h in fifth gear also in only 7.9 seconds with

impressive elasticity. The newgeneration gasoline direct injection Turbo is a real powerhouse, with 300 Nm maximum torque (with overboost) enabling its superb sporty performance. Its power output per liter of 125 hp makes it the leader in its class. The power that the Astra GTC brings to the road with this top engine is tastefully visible on the outside. The coupé leaves other road users watching its taillights and admiring its two chrome exhaust tailpipes. There is only one area where the gasoline direct in-

jection unit is miserly: with fuel consumption. In the combined cycle, it needs just 6.6 liters fuel per 100 kilometers and emits 154 gram CO2 per kilometer. The 200 hp Turbo completes the series production Astra GTC’s engine portfolio. Its counterpart on the diesel side is the high-performance 2.0 BiTurbo CDTI with 143 kW/195 hp and 400 Nm torque. The only engine that surpasses these two top-of-the-line units is the 206 kW/280 hp OPC power plant – a very mighty trio!
