Heart-broken father David Nesbitt has thanked the people of Dundalk for their ‘kind words and support’ as he collected signatures for a petition which he will take to James Reilly’s office in Dublin tomorrow in a desperate attempt to try and get help for his 17-yearold daughter. David fears that somebody will be hurt if his daughter Niamh doesn’t get the help she clearly requires and spent all of last Friday on Clanbrassil St asking people to sign his petition which he plans to give to the Minister of Health tomorrow. “We have been trying for years to get Niamh properly assessed but each agency
that we go to passes us on to somebody else and it seems as though nobody wants to take responsibility for our case. I have had enough at this stage and I feel as though I have to try and do something to make the Minister of Health listen to us.” explained David. David’s petition was signed by over 2,500 people on Friday and he is thankful for all the kind words and encouragement he received whilst collecting the signatures. The petition asks the Minister of Health to act upon his duty of making sure all children in the Republic of Ireland get the proper medical care to which they are entitled whilst claiming Continued on Page 14

Town centre business needs help
Louth County Council has the second worst rates collection record in Ireland with only 59% of rates collected in 2011. The figures were revealed in response to a parliamentary question last week which also showed that the rates collection dropped by 8% between 2010 and 2011. Dundalk Town Council’s rates of collection also dropped in the same year from 61% to 60%. Only five other town councils in Ireland have a rate lower than 60% putting Dundalk
“
Town Council in bottom quarter of the rankings. As well as taking less money from registered rate payers there are also fewer registered businesses in the town centre and the ongoing retail concerns in Dundalk town has impacted on the basic amenities the area can claim to offer. Two weeks ago speaking to the Dundalk Leader Louth County Councillor, Tomas Sharkey, identified a number of problems that are contributing to the situation. The limitations
put on accessing cash by a lack of ATMs in the town centre; the reduced availability of small household supplies in the town driving people towards large shopping centres as well as the knock on effect of closures are all influential issues. “Banks are pulling back on ATMs and closing branches and I have no doubt that small shops lose out because people don’t have basic access to their cash” he said. However he also identi-
fied those in positions of responsibility who could be more proactive in boosting retail in Dundalk. Cllr Sharkey hit out at the local authorities for their failure to respond to the situation in Dundalk saying that there is no sense of urgency to tackle the growing problems and that help needs to be provided for small retailers. “We have made it inconvenient for people to come into town and do some shopping,” he said adding that the only way to
compete with big shopping centres was by increasing choice. The councillor said that the LCC were very amenable to negotiating rate payments for struggling business, and that with the transfer of services to LCC in the coming months a lower level of rates was already on the way. He said that Dundalk needs to work on a brand for itself, and develop a real interest in the area and attracting people through word of mouth. Cllr Tomas Sharkey

Game goes on as Winter League issues are resolved
has resolved their By Paul Byrne THE Dundalk winter recent differences with League committee Dundalk F C following a meeting last Friday to address the problems that had arisen. The winter league have had an arrangement for years with Dundalk FC to use Oriel Park as one of their main venues for matches, contributing roughly €15,000 each year for use of the pitch. However due to new training schedules set out by Stephen Kenny’s Dundalk side which include extra training sessions for underage and first teams it meant that the winter league were getting squeezed out when it came to arranging matches. called off at the last minute after the two teams were told they could not use the pitch. Winter league chairman Brian Keogh expressed his disappointment at the time and that seemed to be the end of the association between the two. However at last week’s meeting grievances from both sides were aired and according to Brian a resolution was reached which satisfied both parties. “Dundalk FC’s Ciaran Bond outlined the predicament the club found themselves in regards to pitch availability due to first team training, emerging talent squad and minor league commitments”, explained Brian. “This was fully understood and the
winter league asked what their position was regarding spaces. Ciaran ensured that the winter league would get first preference and a list of availability would be furnished, with the proviso that should any other change arise that plenty of notice would be given. “Ciaran expressed his affection for the Dundalk Winter League, firstly because it was local and that he was a player and manager in the past”, he noted.

Trio help break Shave or Dye world record By Paul Byrne THREE local men, Aidan Duffy, Mark McArdle and Colm McDonnell’s heads may be a bit chillier this week but that matters not a jot as the three amigos have once again made it into the Guinness Book of World Records. Aidan, Colm and Mark travelled to the Mansion House in Dublin with their wives/ personal hair stylists, Bronagh, Deirdre and Amy to take part in Today FM’s Shave or Dye World Record attempt for ‘Most heads shaved simultaneously’ and for the second year running they were declared record breakers. The boys were part of a 179 strong team who sacrificed their locks to raise money for the Shave or Dye campaign which has raised over €6m for the Irish Cancer Society since it began five years ago. This is the third year the boys have been involved in the campaign and the second year running in which they’ve broken a world record (last year they took part in the ‘Biggest Gathering of Mohawks) According to Aidan all involved had great craic in Dublin last Fri-

day and thoughts now turn to the boys own personal fundraiser which takes place in the Lisdoo on March 16. “We all had a great time in Dublin and the Today FM gang couldn’t have been nicer to us. Michael couldn’t make it unfortunately but three of us went up with our partners and we had a great day. We’re now looking forward to our big night in the Lisdoo on March 16 and we hope that that people come out and support us for what will be a fantastic evenings craic”, noted Aidan. Last year Aidan and the gang raised a whopping €13,120 with €7,400 going to the Irish Cancer Society and the rest divided between the stroke rehab unit and the Southern Area hos-
pice service. This year’s Lisdoo event will see ten men get their locks shaved and according to Aidan there will be plenty of spot prizes and surprises on the night. “Please keep the sponsorship going no matter how small, it all counts”, urged Aidan. “The prizes are currently rolling in for us to give away on the night. We have a pair of Garth Brooks tickets to give away for what will be the hottest gig of the year and there is also a two night stay in a top hotel. So I’d ask people to come on down and join us for a great evening”, added Aidan. Entry is free on March 16 and everyone is invited. Donations will be accepted on the evening.

Painting provides boost for Hospice By Paul Byrne A painting of Dundalk FC legend Tommy MacConville by a local artist has raised an impressive €440 for the North Louth Hospice. Michael Duffy’s painting was bought by a group calling themselves ‘Friends of Tommy Mac’ with every cent raised going directly to the North Louth Hospice. Michael was inspired to paint his old friend Tommy as he considers him to be the greatest player ever to put on the famous old black and white jersey. “In recent times I have been painting Irish icons and Tommy is the most majestic player ever to grace Oriel Park
Tony Casey, Tony O’Kane, Pat McGuirk and Bill Elliot with the Tommy Mac painting
so it was inevitable that I would end up painting him. I know the north Louth Hospice was close to Tommy’s heart so I’m delighted that we
managed to raise some money for them through the sale of the painting. I know the guys that bought it and I’d like to thank them for putting
in the winning bid” explained Michael. Bill Elliot was one of the four men from the ‘Friends of Tommy Mac’ who won the auction for
Michael’s painting and he was delighted that his group were able to secure the painting. “We’ve all known Tommy for years and we were delighted to win the auction while making some money for the North Louth Hospice. I used to play football with Tommy and I managed him as well when he used to play for a local team of mine. He was always a gent and a truly special man”, noted Bill “Myself, Tony O’Kane, Tony Casey and Pat McGurk saw the auction advertised and decided we’d go for it. He was an ambassador for this town and he was a friend to so many people
including ourselves. “We are currently deciding what we are going to do with the painting but we do know that we want to put it on display in a public place so that the people of Dundalk have access to it. “We will decide over the next week or so where to put it and it will be on display when that decision is made”, he added. As well as the €440 raised from the painting a further €1500 was given to the North Louth Hospice from proceeds for the Tommy Mac Memorial match which was played in Oriel Park on February 14.

Cricket club seek information on 150-year-old photo
Dundalk Cricket Club are appealing for help with information in relation to a photograph taken almost 150 years ago. While the current incarnation of Dundalk Cricket Club was founded in 2009 it is known that Co Louth has a rich cricketing history and the original Dundalk Cricket Club was founded in 1853 and seems to have been active until the end of the 19th Century.
The club was recently passed on a photo that appears to show a Louth Cricket team from around the 1870s. The photographic studio of J. Galbraith had premises in Clanbrassil Street in the 1870s as far as the club know. The lady who passed on the photograph to us knows nothing about it and was only able to tell the committee that her family have lived for many years in the Castlebellingham/
Ardee/Tallanstown area. The club are very keen to identify either the individuals in the photo or the name of the team and are appealing to anyone who may have knowledge on the history of the photographer to come forward, if anyone knows of any index or records it may help. If anyone thinks they maybe able to help please contact the club Public Relations Officer at pro@dundalkcricketclub.com

No justification for random assault A man who admitted carrying out a random assault on a man in the early hours of the morning apologised unreservedly for his actions at Dundalk District Court. Alan Meegan, Tullygee, Knockbridge, pleaded guilty to an assault charge following the incident on December 13, 2012 on Park St. Insp Martin Beggy stated that on that date, the victim was headbutted by the defendant without any prior altercation or reason.
Solicitor, Frank McDonnell, handed over €1,200 compensation from his client and explained that it was an unprovoked attack. “The victim was entirely innocent of a perceived notion that formed in the mind of a drunken man. There was no justification for it and no foundation”, explained Mr McDonnell. He pointed out that the defendant comes from a good family background and the 22-yearold is doing a 12-month course with St Brides GAA club. He
said that Mr Meegan apologises unreservedly. “This is something he regrets as he had no ill-will towards the victim. When too much drink comes on board, common sense goes out the window”, added the solicitor. Judge William Hamill remarked that for it to be a case of mistaken identity would have been one thing, but if drink was causing him to headbutt someone for no reason it may help to get a Probation Report. He adjourned the case to May 7.

Woman went on crime spree
A Dundalk woman who is battling an alcohol problem went on a crime spree over a number of months in 2013.
Natalie Walsh of 28 Langfield Close, Dublin Road, who pleaded guilty to a series of offences in order to feed her addiction, had her case adjourned to May 7 for a Probation Report.
The court heard that on October 10 last year the defendant was arrested following a public order offence at Dundalk Garda Station. She had arrived into the building shouting and carrying a large suitcase and after refusing to listen to Gardai, she was arrested. She pleaded guilty to theft at a boutique on Park St on August 9, and to stealing wine from a shop on Clanbrassil St valued at €14.99 the following day.

Ms Walsh also stole vodka valued at €12.49 from Lidl on August 9 and on March 26 she took items valued at €25 from Boots in the Marshes Shopping Centre. Solicitor, Sean T O’ Reilly, stated that the 31-yearold defendant is a mother of four children who are not currently with her. He added that she suffered a severe head injury in 2011 and suffers from memory loss. “She has an alcohol problem and this spree resulted from her being under the weather on an almost constant basis. She wants to address this problem and has made efforts to do so in the past.
“All the incidents relate to either getting money for drink, or stealing drink”, added Mr O’Reilly. Judge William Hamill adjourned the case to May 7 for a Probation Report.

No, I don’t think I’d bother. Maybe back in the day I’d have been interested but what with all the recent scandals in the church I don’t think I’m as interested anymore.
I wouldn’t bother myself but I do think it would be nice to see him come over. He seems a lot more outgoing and responsive than the last fella so I’d welcome his visit.
I think it’s a good idea in theory but if any catholics make the trip to see him I think it would be great if they could get an opportunity to ask him questions about catholicism and not just go up there to wave.
I don’t really know if I would go to see him. I’d have to ask my Mam’s permission. But if she said it was ok I think I’d go up to meet him in Dublin.
Yes, I would love to go up and see him if he came. I can remember the excitement from when Pope John Paul II came thirty or forty years ago and it would be nice to recreate that.

Scoildrámaíochta makes a comeback One of Dundalk’s oldest traditions is making a comeback this month thanks to a local schoolteacher’s passion for the Irish language. The Féile Scoildrámaíochta Dhún Dealgan or Dundalk Scoildrámaíocht Festival was established in 1934 and became a very popular annual event in Dundalk for many years. However, in recent years the event ceased to be and had become somewhat forgotten until this year when Marist schoolteacher Simon Quinn helped get the show back on the road with the help of a number of local schools. The Scoildrámaío-
Scoildrámaíocht is making a comeback in Dundalk
chta Festival will take place this Friday in DKIT’s Mac Anna theatre between 10 and 12:30 and according to Simon the event will
once again become an annual tradition. “We’re really looking forward to Friday and we’d like to invite everybody up to enjoy
what is going to be a very exciting show. Pupils and teachers alike are eagerly preparing for Féile Dhún Dealgan and we look forward to
Father takes petition to Minister Reilly
From Page 1 that the needs of many disabled and underprivileged children are no longer being met efficiently by the Department of Health. “I spent all day on Friday and a few hours on Saturday collecting signatures for my petition and I’d like to thank all of the people who took time to sign it and for
their kind words and encouragement. About a dozen of us will travel to Dublin on Thursday and we will meet up with a couple of hundred campaigners and from there we will wait outside James Reilly’s office until we get a response. “I’m willing to stay outside his office for as long as it takes for somebody to
take our book of us, be that days weeks or months. My daughter needs help and she deserves to be looked after properly. I will not let this go” insisted David. The Dundalk man’s patience reached breaking point recently when Niamh, who has a mental age of seven, attacked her parents with a knife.
“After the knife incident I just couldn’t take it anymore and I knew we could not wait around any longer.” explained David. Niamh is a good girl outside of these violent outbursts and just needs to be properly diagnosed and given some proper treatment. I really don’t think this is too much to ask for” he added.
hopefully making this an annual event”, explained Simon. The Dundalk festival is being resurrected this year as part of An
Cumann Scoildrámaíochta’s 80th anniversary celebrations, having been first established in 1934. The festival gives students the opportunity to act, gain confidence and have fun all through the medium of Irish. Amongst the schools that will be participating this year will be Réalt na Mara, Redeemer Girls and Coláiste Lú. Winners of the competition will go on to represent the region in Féile Laighean / the Leinster Provincial Festival. This year’s event will be held in DKIT’s Mac Anna theatre on Friday 28th February from
10.00am-12.30pm, kick-starting Seachtain na Gaeilge in the town. The Mac Anna theatre is a fitting venue as the original founder and chief organiser of Féile Dhún Dealgan for many years was May Nic Anna, a sister of the famous director and playwright Tomás Mac Anna, after whom the theatre is named. Entrance on the day is open to the public and will be €1 for pupils / €4 for adults in what is sure to be a fulfilling and exciting day for all those involved. As the Irish proverb says, “Mol an óige agus tiocfaidh sí!” (Praise youth and it will flourish).

Committed offences while on Community Service order A man who pleaded guilty to two thefts at a time when he was carrying out Community Service had a six-month sentence suspended for two years at Dundalk District Court. Charles McGinley of 17 College Heights, Hoey’s Lane, Dundalk, admitted taking a mirror valued at €20 from Harry Corry at Dundalk Retail Park on November 26 last year. He also took €400 worth of groceries
from Dunnes Stores without paying. All property was recovered. Solicitor, Dermot Monahan, stated that his 18-year-old client was in bad company on the day in question and under the influence of alcohol. However, Judge Conall Gibbons remarked that the defendant, who had previous convictions for public order offences, had carried out the thefts while un-
der a Community Service Order. Mr Monahan stated that it was an act that could be put down foolish juvenile behaviour and asked the judge to consider Community Service. Judge Gibbons imposed a six-month sentence in relation to the theft at Dunnes, taking the other into account. He suspended the sentence for two years due to the defendant’s young age.
Special message of love Local man Ciaran Mc Creanor had a very special message to send his partner this Valentine’s Weekend. So for the year’s most romantic of occasions Ciaran proposed to his partner Katrina on the Bridge Street billboard. The local romantic won a competition with the Longwalk Shop-
ping Centre to have his Valentine’s proposal put on display in the prominent town centre location. “I wanted to do something romantic, I was always planning on proposing anyway. I was nervous, I was 90% sure that she would say yes but there’s always a little ‘just in case, but

New show tells story of St Brigid THE TLT is the setting for a brand new production about a historic local figure, St Brigid, when it opens on May 10. “The Cloak” is the story about two strong women, St Brigid and her mother Broicsech. It is entirely original and has a full cast of 30 including singers, dancers and actors and tells the story of the life of an Irish iconic figure St Bigid and her mother. The production uses music, singing, dancing, audio visual presentation filming and acting to bring to life this story of courage and endeavour where two women are fighting against tyranny and abuse during a time when paganism and poverty were the way of life. These women overcame these challenges and St. Brigid became a symbol of hope and
charity for many thousands of followers worldwide. The Cloak production premiered in September 2013 in St Brigid’s Cathedral Kildare Town and ran over four performances. The performances were sold out each night and closed to a standing ovation. The production has a strong storyline and uses vibrant and sensual dance, emotive music and singing, including dramatic acting to bring this story to the stage. The production will go on tour in Ireland during 2014 visiting 12 venues and will go on tour to the UK and Europe in 2015. What happens in 2016 is open to consideration but the granting of licences to tour the USA, China and Australia would not be out of the question.

Call to deal with safety concerns at Ard Dealgan apartments By Niamh Kirk
The local council should take responsibility for the repercussions of failed projects the planning department has approved according to Cllr Jennifer Green. Last week the Sinn Fein representative was inspecting the Ard Dealgan apartments on Quay Street which were developed by Tom McFeely who built the disastrous Priory Hall apartments in Dublin. As with their Dublin counterparts the Ard Dealgan building was declared unfit for habitation not long after completion. Ever since the apartment block has slowly fallen into disrepair becoming not
only an eyesore but a safety concern for residents in the area. Following recent high winds a wooden pallet that had been enclosing a deep drop was blown down leaving the chasm exposed to the public. The councillor has been negotiating with the executives of Dundalk Town Council to resolve the problem with the building but to little avail and Ms Green said she is now exasperated with the issue. “DTC are saying that it’s not their responsibility as this falls on owners of the Ard Dealgan building. The Town Council to date has put €40,000 into trying to secure the building and aren’t keen into putting any more money
into it”, she said. In a response to a Parliamentary Question submitted by the Sinn Fein Leader Gerry Adams to the Department of Environment, Community and Local Government was told that matters of a planning nature should be addressed to the planning department of the local authority while the unfinished estate coordinator is the appropriate contact in relation to matters such as ownership,” read the reply. Cllr Green said she wants to see the apartment block demolished but with everyone washing their hands of it residents are left in the dark and with an unresolved problem on their doorstep.

County Council to make appeal over Epipen provision By Niamh Kirk
Louth County Council is due to make an appeal to the HSE and Minister James Reilly to ‘ensure that legislation and codes of practice be put in place to ease the restrictions on
the availability of Epinephrine auto injectors (commonly known as EpiPens) and other Anaphylaxis medicines.’ A motion brought forward by Sinn Fein’s Edel Corrigan was approved by the council at the monthly meeting.”
“We need to make access to these potentially lifesaving medicines easier, to prevent such tragic events like the death of 14 year old Emma Sloan, from Anaphylaxis, on O’Connell Street in Dublin, after her mother was refused
an EpiPen by a pharmacist as she didn’t have Emma’s prescription with her,” said Cllr Corrigan. It is not known exactly how many people use Epipens nationally but on the community drug schemes it is estimated
that about 10,000 people are in receipt of the medications. Pointing to the example in Co Down where the staff were trained in the use of Epipens Cllr Corrigan said that she hoped to see the initiative repeated here.

Dundalk band featured on film
I'd Fight Gandhi.
Thursday 27th February
student night
I’d fight Gandhi the Dundalk based nu-metal rockers have had two of their songs featured on the score of new Irish film ‘Gold’ which premiers at the Jameson Film Festival this week. InstruMental from the bands first EP and Lachesis from their second are both featured in the film. The bands front-man Sean McMahon explains that the songs were selected more than one year ago when the sister of the film’s Director, Niall Heery, suggested them. “Niall Heary was looking for some alternative music for the film and his sister Yvonne suggested us. She heard of us at Vantasival over the years and thought we’d be suited for it,” said Sean. Gold is an off-beat comedy and unconventional love story set in an affluent Dublin suburb. Starring James Nesbitt, Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) and David Wilmot, it premiers this February 22 at the annual Jameson Dublin International Film Festival. The I’d Fight Gandhi guys will have to wait until then to find out how the tracks will be used. “We’re not even sure how the songs will appear in the film to be honest. It could be just background noise, blink and you’ll miss it but I guess we’ll see,” said Sean. The band has since released their third EP, Degree, and is planning on recording and releasing more again soon. They are using the funds from the soundtrack to record a video from the title track of their third EP. Keep your eye peeled on screen and stage as Sean says that the band will be announcing the dates for some live shows soon.

other cyclist to take a solo win by over four minutes. Karl Dolan was first clubman home in 9th
place just ahead of the main bunch. In the women’s race, Bryan’s sister, Eve McCrystal, won in a simi-
lar fashion by simply riding away from everyone else. Fiona Rogers was the first home for the host club. All in a great day’s racing was had and every rider tipped their hat to Cuchulainn for putting on such an excellent event. Over 60 people were involved, outstandingly co-ordinated by the Neary family, from standing at junctions in the rain, to serving hot soup and sandwiches after. Also the local Red Cross and Gardaí provided support.

Solicitor, Frank McDonnell, stated that his client is the father of six-month old twins and while he had an insurance certificate, it didn’t
cover him for the vehicle he was driving. “He is a man that should have known better having been down the street before and should have learned his lesson. A disqualification will affect his chances of getting a job”, he added. Judge Conall Gibbons imposed a three-year disqualification and a €400 fine.
