In its fifth year, Dundee Science Festival 2014 is the biggest yet with events to engage and inspire the whole community. Each year the festival attracts more people and in response to this we have programmed more events and more exhibitions in more venues than ever before to help ensure that everyone can enjoy and participate in this unique festival. Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths help us to make sense of, and be inspired by the world around us. They form part of our history and culture and will be integral to our future. The events that make up Dundee Science Festival are created for you by people who are excited about sharing their research, creativity and innovation with you. Dundee Science Centre and our partners are proud to bring you the 2014 festival and invite you to join us and be excited and inspired by this two week long celebration of science.
Dundee Science Festival is a city-wide celebration of science, providing fun, entertainment, inspiration and curiosity for all ages. You can find more information on the wide range of activities on offer within this brochure and on our website www.dundeesciencefestival.org. Dundee and Its Scientific Firsts Sat 01 Nov, 6pm-7pm In 1867 the British Association for the Advancement of Science held their 37th Annual Meeting in Dundee to the dismay of some of its members. Despite assurances and persistence from the host city, many questioned the wisdom of taking this hugely prestigious event to a non-university Scottish town for the first time. These doubters were proved wrong when the week-long event proved to be an unqualified success. The thirst for scientific knowledge in this city remains undeminished with many scientific discoveries and inventions being founded here. This lecture will consider how ‘One City - Many Discoveries’ is an entirely apt descriptor. A drinks reception will follow. Free admission, booking essential. More than 250,000 patients across Europe require kidney dialysis. Vascular access sites are used to remove and return blood to/from the patient during dialysis. These sites fail in at least half of patients within the first year, leading to increased infections, hospital stays and operations. Dr Shona Matthew at the Division of Cardiovascular & Diabetes Medicine highlights ReDVA’s multi-disciplinary approach to resolving this life threatening issue.
This talk will discuss the way the press tends to report (or, perhaps more accurately, misreport) science. With headlines written to grab our attention, scientific findings are often exaggerated in the press or essentially downright fabricated. Join Dundee Skeptics in the pub to reveal some of the common tropes you’ll find in science reporting, and the ways in which the press shield themselves from accountability in misleading reporting.

The Face of Dundee
Roses are red, violets are blue - or are they? The colours you see may not always be the same as the colours someone else sees, as we see colour through our brains, not our eyes. This workshop shows how different colours can percept appearance and moods. In a recent study testing the relationship between emotions and colour we discovered that nearly every adult assigned yellow to happiness, blue to sadness and red to anger. Why are these colours associated with these emotions? This workshop teams a scientist, a hairdresser and a psychologist to explore the science behind colours. Free admission, booking essential. This talk and workshop by Fergus Drennan and James Wood will discuss the foraged book project and what it means to work with wild and foraged materials. They will lead a wild walk - discovering plant and fungi species found in and around Dundee as well as tasting some brilliant wild food delicacies. This will be followed by a workshop where all participants involved will produce their own hand-made papers and paints from wild and foraged materials.

Zombie Science: Brain of the Dead
The God Delusion: Can a Scientist Believe in God?
Sat 15 Nov, 4pm-5pm (also FRI 14 Nov)

Discover how a Zombie brain works in this spoof lecture, presented by a Theoretical Zombiologist, featuring interactive demonstrations and a multi-media presentation. This is the science you need to survive the inevitable Zombie apocalypse. Supported by the Wellcome Trust and University of Glasgow.
Professor Andrew Halestrap, Professor of Biochemistry at Bristol University, will explore the relationship between Science and Faith. Do they truly give conflicting accounts of reality and does science disprove the existence of God any more convincingly than religion can prove it? Is faith required for both positions?

Some Lines on a Landscape
Beautiful Biology
William Latham: Mutator2 Mon-Fri, 10.30am - 5pm & Sat, 12pm - 4pm
Mon - Sat 9am - 5.30pm. Sun 11am - 5pm
This exhibition presents the results of artist Derek Robertson’s recent residency at Tentsmuir National Nature Reserve, a collaborative project involving scientists, writers, poets, storytellers and dancers. Together they have interpreted the landscape through understanding of the interconnected, ecological webs and through the study of key species such as red squirrels, otters, seals and moths.
Let the scientific images in this eye-catching exhibition tell you the fascinating stories behind Dundee’s biomedical research efforts. Each stunning image is accompanied by an explanatory text setting out the relevance to health and disease. In addition, you can find more about the career paths available in biomedical research.
Step into the scene of morphing organic animations as you interact with the computer programme and create your own vision of a virtual natural world. This major exhibition includes Latham’s video art and interactive projected imagery that explore and embody evolutionary processes, physical and virtual space.
Learn about the history of life on earth as you walk along the tree of life, filled with full-sized models of some of history’s most impressive creatures, from giant bugs to dinosaurs. The exhibit will discuss the work of D’arcy Thomson who played a vital role in the understanding of how evolutionary processes occur.

The Foraged Book Project Exhibition
The wonder of the brain: Big and Small!
An exhibition showcasing the work, developments and research carried out as part of the foraged book project, a collaboration between over 30 artists, led by Fergus Drennan and James Wood to create a 500 page book hand crafted from entirely wild and foraged materials.
Our brains help us to think, walk, talk and feel. But what are the brains of other animals like? And how do they help them function in the world? What do brains look like when they are healthy? What about when they are hurt? Learn about brains from the tall and the small.

BotanicaMathematica
Where Science Meets Art
BotanicaMathematica is a project that uses textiles to explore mathematical patterns in plant growth. Simple algorithms lead to the geometric shape of a mushroom or the branching structure of a bonsai. Our beautiful specimens are a result of these patterns being interpreted differently by makers from across the world.
We invite you come and see the fascinating artwork produced by MSc students from the University of Dundee’s Forensic and Medical Art programs. Combining their skills in anatomical and forensic science, medicine and art, they have created a catalogue of artwork which is both beautiful and purposeful. You will see examples of how forensic art can be used to recreate the faces of the dead, age the photograph of a child and depict a face from someone’s memory alone.
