DUNIA ABDO

CURRICULUM VITAE

ABOUT ME I have pursued my undergraduate studies at the American University in Dubai where I have been able to advance both my understanding of the science of Architecture, and the art of design. The school environment offered a lot of opportunities that developed my communication skills mainly through cooperative working habits. During the fiveyear program I have produced work addressing different topics and themes. The projects were executed through digital media and physical models. As a graduate, I was fortunate enough to work among students with a broad variety of academic backgrounds and professors with diverse work experiences. I am particularly interested in the human psychology and it’s relation to the theory of architecture, along with architectural visualization and conceptual design.n

SYMBIOSIS Dubai Wildlife Sanctuary

A Zoo Based on the relation between animal behaviour and the human psychology. The project’s main purpose is to allow visitors experience the closure to non-humans through the fundamentals of architecture that consist of two main elements; units and circulation varying in sizes and heights. The concept derives from nature itself, the communal system that we all live in is invisible to us although there are boundaries that exist in nature, and spaces being dedicated for animals, therefore, in this project the animal exhibits, ‘Cubes’ will fall into arrangements that determine the needed areas for them. The zoo creates spaces through the intersection of the circulation grids and forms zones for the animals, while the visitors will be able to experience different views and this creates a dynamic motion where observation points are being developed and are subject to change according to the visitors movements. Site description:

The head of a 10-km-long tidal creek which penetrates 7 km inland from the Gulf through Dubai city, containing: Tidal mudflats (maximum low-water extent c.150 ha) lagoon with maximum depth of 2 m and tidal range of 1.0-1.5 m. Flat sabkhah surrounds the intertidal area; there is some salttolerant scrub above the high-tide line. Tamarix in disturbed areas.

The site is located in Ras Al Khor, Dubai which is known for its Wildlife Sanctuary (RAKWS) that has become the Nation’s first Ramsar wetland site. RAKWS is located at the head of the 14Km long watercourse known as Dubai Creek, and covers an area of 620 hectares featuring sabkhas saline flats, intertidal mudflats and mangroves, small lagoons and pools, and a few tiny islands which lies at the interface between the Persian Gulf and the Al Awir Desert.

The aim of the Bird’s Tower concept is to create a space that hosts birds from all around the world. The tower consists of cubical shaped aviaries that are arranged vertically connected through ramps. The ramps go in and around the cages and stop at viewing platforms. Thus, the paths of the visitors ascend and descend according to the enclosures the visitors want to see, and this allows viewing them from different points. The mesh is stainless steel and is built on the cages where the birds are. The tower invites people to see the zoo entirely that consists from different environments as well.

Multi-story cubed volumes with identical ratios merge to create common spaces and form an enclosed hill for the cervidae animals, that results into creating a comfortable place to meet their one shared characteristic; having slender legs that travel on vertical surfaces. In contrast, the near by outdoor areas of the zoo become defined by this unit.

CERVIDAE HOUSE

The unit features glass and lightweight concrete enclosures. The patterns on the faรงades provide these magnificent animals with a stimulating environment, and to bring a sense of light and openness to the indoors space. However, in the summer time the animals get to stay in the surrounding outdoor areas. The spaces maintain a strong visual connection with the sky and changing patterns of daylight on the glazing which simulates a canopy of trees.

VISITOR CIRCULATION

Bear house is essentially designed based on the bear behaviour. Since Bears are normally shy, retiring animals that have very little desire to interact with humans, their spaces are slightly elevated from the human circulation, therefore people get to see the Bears behaving just as in their natural habitat.

The underground area for Giraffes is a unique opportunity to interact with them from the upper visitors circulation, allow giraffe feeding too. They are kept with Rhinos because they are able to survive together in the same environment. Also, Rhinos need to be guarded inside a strong structure otherwise they can destruct and escape light structures.

ZEITGEIST A Boutique Hotel

A Boutique Hotel that is inspired by the architectural movement Brutalism. Shapes contrast strongly with the sharpness of the geometry of the building and show the idea of void verses mass. The space itself provides wide openings along with the shadows cast by the narrow openings. The texture of the concrete both combined, operate as the only ornamentation. It is constructed with concrete, which provides a sense of cleanness and weightiness at the same time reflects the movement of Brutalism.

CONSERVATORY OF MUSIC A Music School

A Proposal for a music school that is based on the relationship between music and architecture in design. Concept is taken from a song that has several instruments playing in it. Throughout analysing the notes, the musical sheets met architecture in many aspects such as, unity, rhythm and harmony. The existence of this project comes out from a single instrument and carries on with more, as architecture expresses purity, this project tried to find quality of spaces that contain the elements that a composer (Architect) needs.

AUDI SHOWROOM Car Showroom

The new Audi showroom design concept is inspired by the major design features found in Audi showrooms world wide those being dynamism, asymmetry and transparency. The asymmetric shapes are used to communicate its character to create a three-dimensional environment to contrast with the organised areas and the transparent volumes of the building. The additional feature is the ramps which wind sinuously upwards creating a fluid conception of space, and where the outdoor cars will be displayed.

ART GALLERY Dubai Downtown Gallery

A three-storey art gallery space located in the heart of dubai flows between light, art, architecture and landscape, with views from one level to another, from inside to outside, responds directly to the context of the surroundings and framing views of the city through its narrow chambers, and where the volumes get assembled for the unexpectedly changeable diverse connections between each other. The linear simple looking spaces attract visitors inside the gallery, and the people’s movement dissolve into refrerence with the othe joined spaces while moving, allowing them to view the entire gallery with.

Provided main circulation connecting to main roads, reallocating the N-S circulation in order to have better ventilation. The calligraphy was chosen as the main concept behind the building design. Courtyards are created within residential spaces as common exterior space that is shaded by vegetation.

Central space that has services Bicycle tracks within the shaded pedestrian retail are secondary circulation spaces. Applying Urbanism vision by Ebenezer Howard ‘We are becoming a land of great cities. Villages are stationary or receding; cities are enormously increasing. Sustainable approach is promoted by using wind towers as natural ventilation. Narrow paths between retail shops create a pleasant experience in terms of cool wind for pedestrians.

THE GENERIC CITY Seamless Ethnic Mosaic The concept is based on having no seams, moving without any interruptions from one space to another preserving the uniform quality that resembles a pattern in composition that is identified by ethnic means of specific stylistic traits, especially in being made up of comparable elements of different sizes. Design l What indicates the work’s structure is a straight forward execution of a simple idea— just the way LeWitt liked it, however in this model it shows as white units of square rods that have broken the geometries he played with, in this case it still has his style but in a different language, its proportional as it combines fragility with monumentality and complexity, in terms of space each perspective view looks different than the other. It is less systematic but the structure is based on balance and unity between elements, otherwise it falls down. The model mounts from bottom to top and illustrates a dynamic motion. It incorporates light, since mass verses void is the form of the entire function

Design 2 This structure involves transformation that is based on the element Proportion: additive. It still demonstrates aesthetic concepts that the previous model incorporated in design, but in this one the elements are more derived from various proportions of aesthetics. The application of the design is introduced by making initial design decisions relating to proportions through using various respondents that are shown as families of rectangles, spans and parallel rods that differ in height and also thicknesses. The way volumes intersect shows another aspect of how the mass has also become different in proportion to its void.

BERKOWITZ-ODGIS House Facade ReDesign

The house is rectangular in Plan and its volume expands horizontally. It harmonizes as volume share the same elements. Scale and line weights that unify the mass are proportional in terms of scale, and the structure allows light to interfere and penetrate the entire shape because of the narrow horizontal plan and the amount of windows. Patterns of rectangles within rectangles shows rhythmic geometries.

Partition ReDesign The Partition was added between the kitchen and the dining room, it kept the same language of the house but it its more vertical than horizontal. Black and white also add contrast to the inner environment and since its inspired by Tony Smith’s work, it shows geometric forms that serve a purpose, to store and display items within the partition.

House Facade ReDesign The organic form of the facade promotes harmony between the human habitation and the natural site, through this design approaches it becomes part of a unified, interrelated composition. The black color and the openings present simplicity and modernity at the same time, the primary colors in the columns add more aesthetic value and vibrancy.

SHADOW OF A CHAIR 1958 Newydd, Wales 3D Transformation

The design engages in exploring the spatial mysteries, by visually being able to get involved on multiple levels. The physical aspect of the work with its highly complex linear elements of also twisted wood, being compared to the Chair’s Shadow it is likewise purposeful, but unlike usual shadow it clearly shows the layering concept of the shadow, by having different transulcant objects, that allow light penetration but on different levels. Any object is possible as shadowed and the shadows of this design is of the variables such as the x,y, and z coordinates.
