Raising a Perfect Child (A Mother’s Day Reminder)

“Tiny fingers curled around mine. Perfectly formed. Newborn. The image of two. Infinite mystery. I wanted to know where life comes from.” — from Eagle Song, by the Imperials David and Elizabeth were near neighbors of ours for a number of years in Meadow Pointe during our younger years. Great people! Great parents! David was a funny guy. I’ll never forget a classic line of his about parenting. It painted the practice on the canvas of reality as plainly as anyone could portray it. Reflecting on the time when

they had but one little shy, introverted, compliant girl, David said, “For years, when I would hear other parents talking about all the problems they were having making their kids mind, I would think, ‘What’s the matter with these people?’ In fact,” he said, “I even started thinking about writing a book on parenting. You know, to try and help out the poor, inept types who can’t see how to raise perfect children. But then,” he went on to say, “Jonathan was born.”

When You, Then God Keith Chandler, Journey Christian Church When you do X, then you get Y When you’re kind to people, they tend to be kind back. When you save money, then you have more money. When you take care of your car, it tends to last longer. We understand when you get X, then you get Y. But would it surprise you to know that we serve a when, then kind of God? Throughout the Bible, God teaches this. God says to Adam and Eve, “When you stay away from that tree, then I’ll make your life good.â€? It continues with Noah. “When you build this boat, by these speciďŹ cations, then I’m going to save you and start all over with you.â€? Then Abraham. God comes to him and says, “I know you’re old, but when you put your trust in me, then I’m going to make you the father of many nations.â€? It continues with Moses. “When you choose to follow me, then I’m going to have you lead my people out of slavery.â€? It continues on to Jesus. Jesus said, “When you seek, you will ďŹ nd, and when you knock,

the door will be opened. When you ask, then it will be answered. When you remain in me, then you will begin to look like me.â€? Throughout scripture, God is letting us know that when you do X, then you get Y. Why is so important for us? There’s a tendency for us is to drift one way or the other in the way we view the Bible. Some drift toward the idea that the Bible is simply our get out of hell free card. Read enough of it to know the prayers and the things you got to do in order to escape hell and go to heaven. Once you ďŹ gure that out, you think, “I don’t need to read the Bible anymore. I’ve done what I need to do.â€? Others see the Bible like ancient literature. We put it on the shelf with our collection of other books. The truth is, the Bible is ďŹ lled with all these amazing principles that God wants to do in our life, but he’s basically saying, â€?Your move. When you do X, then I will do Y. The Kingdom of God is other-worldly, transcending Earth’s cultures, religions, ethnicities, races, and traditions. It’s not deďŹ ned by any of those natural things and, instead, operates in and through and beyond and despite any of those things. The Church was brought into existence by the will of God as the spiritual organism for exalting Jesus and spreading His Kingdom on the earth. The Church is made up of people called out of every culture, religion, ethnicity, race, and tradition to become one Family uniďŹ ed under one King who has given us a common Image and Mission deďŹ ned by a common Book that tells us to take one Message to the world—the King and the Kingdom have come. And right there is where things break down because we like our idea of “onenessâ€? over God’s. Our idea of oneness is almost always sameness. God’s idea of oneness is unity. So, though we live in the most culturally diverse nation on the earth, our churches of-

ten don’t reect that diversity as we still have white churches, black churches, Hispanic churches, Asian churches, etc. And instead of our denominations being representative of our diversity, they instead are often the reason for our divide. If we’re not careful, we will let this separateness that we’re so comfortable with play out at the Well, too. We’ll be tempted to stick with what we know and who we know and sit with those who look like us. But we can break that mold and be to each other what this otherworldly Kingdom is all about! We can refuse to duplicate at the Well what we know is broken. We can join the revolution Jesus started when He broke down the dividing wall between Jew and Gentile. The gaps between us will shorten as each of us continually and intentionally takes a step away from what’s comfortable and moves toward someone unfamiliar or just plain dierent from ourselves. That’s how a church, and that’s how a city, are won!

Canines for Christ

Support Rosie for Honorary Mayor!

By Karen McBride

Canines for Christ is an animal therapy ministry. Volunteers and their dogs visit people in cancer centers, children’s homes, nursing homes, hospitals, prison ministries, and other places where people are in need of God’s comforting words and the unconditional love and aection dogs can bring. Chaplain Larry Randolph started Canines for Christ in July 2007. It has grown to over 300 volunteers in the Tampa Bay region. The teams visit over 60 centers in the area, including Brighton Gardens, Connerton Court – New Tampa, John Knox Village, James A. Haley Veterans Hospital, Shriners Hospital for Children, Hope Lodge at MofďŹ tt Cancer Center, and Gulfside Center for Hospice Care. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, you must complete an application, are

required to have a certiďŹ cate of health completed by your veterinarian, provide the AKC Canine Good Citizen or Therapy Dog CertiďŹ cation, and sign a liability waiver. Dogs must be two years old to enter the ministry, well-mannered, and non-aggressive. Volunteers must be Christians, share God’s message of love and hope, and, of course, be willing to spend time to visit with the patients. Canine for Christ volunteers are needed for an upcoming event at a camp for people with disabilities. Volunteers can choose from Monday, May 29 from 2-4pm or Tuesday, May 30 from 1-3pm. The camp is located at Lake Aurora Christian Camp, 237 Goldenbough Rd., Lake Wales, Florida 33898. Many people with auto and homeowner’s insurance wonder if a personal umbrella policy (PUP) is really necessary. If you own property or have other assets, you should strongly consider umbrella insurance. A PUP covers a much higher limit and goes above and beyond liability directly relating to your home, boat, jet ski, RV, golf cart, and auto. The main purpose of your umbrella policy is to protect your assets from an unforeseen event, such as a tragic accident in which you are held responsible for damages or bodily injuries. You don’t have to be a millionaire to need that much coverage. For example, say you’re hosting an outdoor dinner party and a balcony collapses, injuring several people. If those people are unable to work for a few months, you could be responsible for their unearned income, along with any medical bills. This can quickly add up to more than the $100,000 or $300,000 liability limits on your homeowners policy. The personal umbrella policy would kick in at this point. It is designed to save you

from major claims and lawsuits. As a result, it helps protect your assets and your future. Without a PUP, you could be stuck paying the remaining balance of a claim out of pocket. Underlying liability limits must be 250/500 on auto and $300,000 on home. An umbrella policy only pays once your basic liability limits have been exhausted. The claim will be made against you, the policyholder, on behalf of the wronged party. Then your insurance company may pay the settlement amount up to the limits of your coverage. The average personal umbrella policy with limits of $1 million typically runs about $380 annually. Considering that 13% of bodily injury liability settlements are $1 million or more, an umbrella policy is deďŹ nitely worth it. You may also cover your business with commercial umbrella insurance. Similar to a personal umbrella, a business umbrella policy picks up where your business auto liability, general liability or other liability coverage stops. Rather than increasing total limits, umbrella insurance is an inexpensive way to provide extra coverage. How Dare You Create World So Full of Misery AW

Dr. Dianne Coin Co-Pastor, River of Life Church I recently read the interview of the Englishman Stephen Fry (an atheist) who commented on a question asked him by Gay Byrne as to what he would do if he actually met God at the Pearly Gates? Mr. Fry’s answer was this “I’d say, bone cancer in children?â€? What’s that about? “How dare you create a world to which there is such misery that is not our fault? It’s not right and utterly, utterly, evil.â€? He then said, “Why should I respect a capricious meanminded stupid God who creates a world so full of injustice and pain?â€? When I read comments like this, it always hurts my heart that so many have such a perverted view of God and His doings. God has been accused of much over the years, when indeed he has nothing to do with the evil in this world. Now I know God can defend Himself. But I felt I would like to respond. In the book of Genesis, Adam and Eve were given the (privilege) authority to rule in this earth. (Genesis 2:27-28). Unfortunately, they disobeyed God by partaking of the one tree they were told NOT to eat, BECAUSE if they did, they would surely die. (Genesis 2:16-17) The devil came into this world to steal, kill and destroy. (John 10:10)

The Bible tells us that through one man’s oense (Adam) judgment (death) passed upon all men. However, it was through one Man’s righteous act (Jesus) the free gift came to all of us. This sin-fallen world was NEVER God’s intention, but HE would NEVER override Man’s will. His heart was broken when Adam and Eve disobeyed. He had warned them so as NOT to have this world ravaged with the likes of that serpent. His desire was a creation that would fellowship with Him and never have to endure the pain of any injustice, evil, pain, or disease. The question, Stephen Fry, is NOT “How dare you create a world to which there is such misery that is not our fault,â€?and“Why a world so full of injustice and pain?â€? The question SHOULD be, “Why have you been so gracious to a world that has continuously deďŹ ed your will and your ways, and yet you STILL sent your Son to die in their place, so that fellowship would be restored?â€?Food for thought!! We invite you to come join us at River of Life Church in Lutz, Florida. Our services begin at 10:30am on Sundays. We would love to have you come! Honoring Mom

Samantha Taylor Samantha Taylor Fitness Moms give so much of their lives to raise their children. Most of the time, she gives up her time and schedule to be there for whatever her kids need. And in the midst of caring for everyone else, Mom often doesn’t take care of her own health. She carefully packs everyone’s lunch but her own. She makes sure everyone gets to their sports and activities but her own. What Mom doesn’t realize sometimes is that by not taking care of herself, she cannot give as much as she can to those kids because she is just so tired by the end of the day. Of course, that is not the case for all moms, but the thousands of moms I have helped lose weight say before they start our program, “I just wish I had more energy and I felt better to be more active with my kids.â€? I had one client who lost 4 sizes and helped her children come o of sugar as well and she said, “I am so much happier as a mother. I didn’t realize how irritable I had become with these three boys. It really is so dierent raising kids when you are healthy and ďŹ t.â€? Many moms regret sitting on the sidelines instead of being engaged with them. Many moms have admitted to me that that they don’t feel as conďŹ dent about their body compared to the other moms so they feel embarrassed showing up at events and interacting with other people and that they are not as happy as they used to be and that makes them grouchier and snappier with their kids. And by the time the evening rolls around, she has given so much of herself without tak-

ing time for herself too that when it comes time to spend time with her husband, she just feels too tired and wants to go bed. Then I hear the other side of moms who do take action and invest time in themselves. They learn that it’s not selďŹ sh and it’s actually for the family too because when mom is happy and feeling good, that aects the whole family. I have had husbands of our clients tell me, “Thank you for giving me my wife back! She is happy again!â€? A good visual is that if you keep pouring out the water in a pitcher and you never put water back in, that pitcher will not have any more water to pour out for others. It’s so important as mothers that we take time to take care of ourselves, too. When we do this, our bodies are strong and we have lots of energy and stamina to be the super woman that mothers are! Women are amazing, and being a mother is a whole other level. Give yourself the gift of taking care of you, too! You are not only doing it for yourself, but you are also doing it for your family. You want to be able to play with those children on the ground and easily get back up, to be able to watch them graduate, to hold their new baby and babysit those grandchildren without being bogged down with a bunch of medical issues. I know it might be a ways down the road, but thinking about what that woman looks like now is important. Most people that deal with medical issues wish they would have taken care of their body. I know some medical issues are not avoidable but doing something to prevent the ones that are is the key. Give yourself or you mother the gift of health and wellness and contact us for a complimentary Body Transformation Analysis so you can see and feel how much better you will feel when you are healthier! www.SamanthaTaylorFitness.com

Thank you so much for the Disney on Ice tickets. The timing was perfect. My ďŹ ve year-old grandson’s visit just happened to coincide with the ticket dates. He absolutely LOVED the show. The look on his face when the show began was priceless. I deďŹ nitely had a mesmerized little boy in my presence. The show was entertaining from start to ďŹ nish. Everything was perfect from the costumes to the music. Afterward he asked me, as well as his mom, what were our favorite parts of the show. My daughter and I agreed that we liked the Little Mermaid best. I asked him about his favorite, and he enthusiastically replied, “Cars!â€? This was a great way to kick o his weeklong visit. My daughter and I were the happy recipients of four Disney On Ice tickets. My husband couldn’t make any of the showtimes, so we invited some friends of ours and gave them two tickets. Their mom even had Disney ears made for the occasion! My Grace (the little one in the top picture) just turned 2 and she was mesmerized by all the music and skating and dancing for two whole hours! She loved hanging out with her friends. What a great birthday experience! Thank you from Rebecca and Grace!

Garden Connect By Steve and Jeanne Wolfe from White Dove Farm

Spring has sprung! However, where are the April showers to bring the May owers? We have used up our water in the rain barrels and that was just for speciďŹ c plants, not the grass, which is now brown and crunchy underfoot. There has been many a year when we have had extremely dry or wet seasons. This year I need a little extra grace. Steve and I would like to really encourage you to attend the May 20th Garden Connect meeting here at White Dove Farm since we will have a new speaker which is Dr. Reddy, MD who will speak on plant-based nutrition. In the past ten years, we have had countless speakers. Some have come back time and again by invitation because they were so vital and enriched our lives. We love them all. If you are putting together a new garden this spring, you will have to really mulch slowly as the plant becomes established by putting down pine needles and leaves. I put

worm castings with soil and pat it around the little plants. Remember not to put these before the seedlings become established or else they will not be able to get in line with the sun and will not ourish. I noticed that I have lost some plants due to lack of moisture, so go searching for leaves since people will put bags of leaves by their curbside and don’t mind at all if someone carries them away. Find a source for horse manure. It is possible by ringing the doorbells of those who own horses and politely ask when and where you can have some of that black gold. We put a black garbage bag into a garbage can and don’t ďŹ ll it too much because it will be too heavy. My friend and I would get ďŹ ve gallon buckets and a shovel. Three quarters full was what we could handle. Toss the mixture into a low pile, toss a bag of topsoil on it, then let the sun dry and mix with a rake. Caution, though, never put green manure of any type near your plants. Let it ferment and cure ďŹ rst. When you decide to use this wonderful mixture, pitch it around your plants, not up against them. Water the mixture well. Try a new kind of seed this year, and you will be amazed to see it grow. I particularly was astonished when I saw and said, “What is this?â€? Guess what! It was Brussels sprouts. Share your experiences with us. Have you ever eaten Kohlrabi? It’s great! Is your family resistant to eating vegetables? I make a vegetable pie that everyone loves. Email me for the recipe at whtdovefarm@yahoo.com. Send us your RSVP request for the May 20th Garden Connect Event. Be blessed!!

Raising a Perfect Child Continued from Page 1 I think you get the picture. SuďŹƒce to say that child number two had a somewhat dierent temperament then child number one, resembling, at times, the sweet and pleasing manner of a cat caught in a ventilator fan. It wasn’t long after my friend gave up on his book project. Raising the perfect child is the title of this article. But it’s a trick title. If it were about what it sounds like, I would certainly need to save my ďŹ ngers for a more honest venture, like say, counting ballots. I mean, my wife and I sure didn’t pull o that feat with any of our three children. Great daughters! But, alas, a little more like their parents then we could have wished. Truth be told, my parents missed the mark about as far as my ďŹ rst tee shot did the fairway. Gang, trace this tendency back up the ole’ family tree as far as you want. Take it clear up to Mr. and Mrs. Noah. Continue right to the door of Adam and Eve. You’ll ďŹ nd you’re loaded with family tree disease as far as your family branches will stretch. Flawed seed And therein lies the point behind this article, the answer to the mystery behind why no parents ever prevail at raising perfect children. It’s simply because the presence of imperfection is as potently proliďŹ c in all us parents as it is in all our posterity. What was true of David is true of us all. “Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me.â€? (Psalm 51:5). I’m hoping this is making some hurting mom feel at least a little bit better. I know there are some moms out there who are being very hard on yourselves for no reason this Mother’s Day season. After 32 years of pastoring, I’ve seen plenty of self-inicted pain of some precious moms pining because of a prodigal who was a prodigal, even when still in the womb. 8IBU T JU UBLF UP SBJTF B QFSGFDU DIJME Precious moms, please know that in the history of Earth, only one woman achieved the elusive honor of rearing a perfect prodigy. And lest you say to yourself, “Yes, which proves it can be done, but I failed,â€? we need all to stop and consider what was and was not the reason behind her success. “And Mary said, ‘My soul magniďŹ es the Lord, and my spirit has rejoiced in God my

Savior. For He has regarded the lowly state of His maidservant, for behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed. For He who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is His name.’â€? (Luke 1:46-49) Blessed Mary! All generations of moms should realize how blessed she was! But upon what grounds? That she raised a perfect child? No! That is not why we rightly call Mary blessed. But we call her blessed because she was given to raise a perfect child! A child who would have been perfect if any other mother on Earth had raised Him. Oh, listen to again to her humble words, “He who is mighty has done great things for me.â€? It wasn’t like God thought, “Okay, the world is pining in sin. It’s a complete train wreck down there. Time to implement the plan. The world needs a Lamb. It needs a PERFECT Lamb. A Lamb without spot (inherent imperfection) or defect (acquired imperfection) of ANY kind! To produce this, we will need to ďŹ nd the perfect mom. A mom who will practice perfect parenting so as to produce a perfect prodigy. Gabriel, go ďŹ nd me a perfect mom to raise for Me a perfect Son to be for them a perfect Lamb and make a perfect payment for this altogether sinful and imperfect race of man.â€? If that were the mission, Gabriel would still be roaming around the Earth today. A word to moms from your kids Dear Mom, please know in your heart that, to us, you are so precious! We realize we gave you a Mission Impossible, making the assignments Peter Graves handed his team look like a trip to the beach at sunset! Because as precious and perfect as we once appeared to you when you lovingly cuddled and caressed our little 7 lb. 5 ounce selves, the sin was already there. But Mom, you loved us anyway! And you taught us right from wrong! And you believed in us! We know our failings have hurt your heart at times. But Mom, please know that to us, you were and always will be A WONDERFUL MOM! By Mike Holm, Pastor of Calvary Chapel 17538 Livingston Ave., Lutz. You are invited to our services every Sunday at 10:15. Hope to see you soon! www.cctampa.org

Memorial Day

It’s the three-day weekend that oďŹƒcially kicks o summer vacations‌ a time for hanging out at the beach, barbecuing, even catching a few laps at the Indy 500. But Memorial Day is also the most solemn American holiday--a day to remember those who made the ultimate sacriďŹ ce, while defending their nation. In the Civil War, America’s bloodiest chapter, over 600,000 soldiers were killed in action. Almost every community in every state

suered the loss of young men. As the war came to an end, mourners in both northern and southern states began placing ags and owers on the graves of fallen soldiers. The town of Waterloo, New York is oďŹƒcially credited with starting the holiday. On May 5, 1866, its citizens closed their shops and businesses so that everyone could decorate the graves of the men killed during the war. Then an old war general had an idea. John A. Logan, leader of the Union Veteran Association, spearheaded an eort to unite all the decoration services into one national holiday, designating May 30th as Decoration Day. On the ďŹ rst national Decoration Day in 1868, 5,000 war widows, orphans, and other mourners gathered at Arlington National Cemetery. They placed owers and ribbons on the 20,000 graves of both Union and Con-

federate soldiers. Two future Presidents and fellow Union veterans, Ulysses S. Grant and James A. GarďŹ eld, attended the ceremony. Throughout the 19th century, Decoration Day grew. Ceremonies were held in major Civil War battleďŹ elds like Gettysburg, Pennsylvania and Antietam ďŹ eld in Maryland. By the end of the century, the holiday was renamed Memorial Day. But war wounds ran deep; most southern states refused to commemorate a holiday they regarded as honoring Union soldiers. So each state commemorated their war dead with dierent Confederate Decoration Days. Several southern states continue the tradition to this day. WWI ushered in the age of modern warfare. America lost over 130,000 soldiers in the global conict. This shared experience ďŹ nally bonded America’s north and south. When the war ended, May 30th became

a day to honor all American soldiers who died in battle as far back as the Revolutionary War. America interred its ďŹ rst Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery on Armistice Day in 1921. Every Memorial Day, this soldier and other unknown soldiers are honored with a wreath-laying ceremony conducted by the President or Vice President. They are reminders of all those who’ve never made it home. Memorial Day became a federal holiday in 1971, when Congress shifted it from May 30th to the fourth Monday in May, giving federal workers a threeday weekend. All across America, veterans and civilians still gather in parades and vigils to remember the generations who gave their lives for their nation’s freedom. http://www.history.com/topics/memorialday-history/media#history-of-memorial-day.
