Giving Easter a Second Look
Have you ever gone for a walk way off the beaten path into some winding woods? Have you ever done it with a genuine ornithologist (i.e., bird watcher)? That experience would probably make most of us feel our eyesight would be something comparable to Stevie Wonder’s during a solar eclipse. Because while our gaze would likely mainly be focused fearfully on the earth below (to avoid a repeat of the near face plant of a half mile back), our bird watcher friend would be joyously peering around 180 degrees with the piercing gaze of
an American bald eagle. Imagine as he enthusiastically points to a 90’ Grevillea Robusta tree (silver oak, stay with me now) and says, “Wow! Did you see that? A striated pardalote! Beautiful specimen! Look! Quick! Look!” And as you risk your life and lift your eyes off the path to peer at the focus of his excitement, frustration floods in quickly, because all you see is leaves and branches. Lots of leaves. Lots of branches.

When You Jump, God Will Catch You Keith Chandler, Journey Christian Church
When my children were young, we’d go to the pool and play that game where Dad stands a few feet from the side in chest-deep water, and tries to convince the kids to jump to him. From the father’s perspective, there’s zero risk to this game, but you wouldn’t know it by watching the kids quiver on the deck. “Jump!“ I would say. “Daddy? Will you catch me?” “Yes! Trust me! Just jump.” “When you jump, then I’ll catch you. But I can’t prove that I’ll catch you until you jump!” As grown-ups who can stand in a few feet of water; we laugh at the little kids cowering on the pool deck. But let’s be honest: jumping can be a scary business. Especially when we’re not entirely certain Daddy’s going to catch us. Let’s talk about our heavenly father. What things do we fear when it comes to trusting Him? Maybe we’re afraid because we’re convinced God’s angry with us and wants to punish us. Maybe he wants to teach us a lesson by letting us hit the water and go under. Maybe our fears are simply based on our desire for pleasure and comfort. What will God call us to do if we decide to take that leap? Or maybe our fear is ex-
actly the same as the one perched on the side of the pool: we’re afraid Daddy isn’t gonna catch us. But the Bible says perfect love drives out fear. So how do we get past it? When you seem far away it’s harder to jump. As a father, I gradually moved toward them. That’s the same approach God has taken with us through the ages. After the fall, God began to draw closer to us again. At first, he was a voice beyond the clouds, then a visible pillar of fire and a massive cloud leading them through the wilderness. Next, he came to the people in the Tabernacle and later the Temple. When they still didn’t get it, he came so close that he was human—Jesus! But then he said, “I’ll get even closer. I’ll unleash the transformative power of my Spirit to change you from the inside out.” With every step closer, God proved his love for us. God deserves our trust but we still have to step off the edge. God stands ever so close and says, “When you jump, then I’ll catch you. But I can’t prove it until you jump.” Continued next month, Keith www.tampajourney.com

A Month of Deep Reflection Samantha Taylor Pure Health & Fitness Studios April is a good time to reflect on life. Spring has just begun, you are recovered from the rush of the holiday season, and summer is soon around the corner. Yet it also makes you think about how it’s already April, we are through the first quarter of the year of 2017, and just as quick, it will be 2018. In the midst of the journey from here until January of 2018 are days full of choices. We can either be disciplined and get it done or we can be riddled with excuses of why it wasn’t. In the end, we are the only one that will look ourselves in the mirror and really know that we either took care of our health or we didn’t. I saw a T-shirt one day that said, “There are two pains in life: the pain of discipline or the pain of regret.” Discipline is not always easy, however, it’s much more enjoyable to do what it takes to be more disciplined then it is to live in regret. That is one thing about this life that is wonderful but is also a challenge. We have a free will. We aren’t robots made to just walk out this life blindly in doing all things that are good for us, we have a free will and we can choose whether to do something that is helpful or harmful to our lives. I think that so many people are just so busy, so caught up in life and were not really taught to make health a major priority that it just gets shoved under the carpet. Yet the more you shove your health under the carpet and don’t deal with it, the more it will soon become this giant lump that you start tripping over and will cause harm. I have been in the health and fitness industry for almost 25 years and I really can’t believe how
blind most Americans are to their health. Not only do they suffer but their family suffers too. It saddens me to even walk through the grocery store and see how sick, tired, and out of shape most have become. But you know what? We will never change what we tolerate. We have to choose to not accept that for our lives anymore. We have to choose that it matters to take care of our bodies, and what better time than April to do that? It’s also a great month of reflection because of Resurrection Sunday (aka Easter). Personally, it’s the day I experienced really meeting God for the first time, 22 years ago. This body builder at the gym would not stop talking about Jesus, and my husband didn’t really want to hear it anymore. So the guy said, “If you go to church with me on Easter, I will stop talking about it.” So we went and that day changed our lives. It really is amazing how one decision can change your life so dramatically. Not only did my husband and I surrender our lives to God and accept Christ as our personal savior that day, but it catapulted me into an amazing experience of helping people learn how to experience victory with God in their lives, how to take what the Bible says can be done in your life and actually experience it. Now I am blessed to have a Christian business with three locations where we can serve women in helping them honor their body as the Temple of God and become healthier so they have more energy and stamina to do the things God has called them to do in life. I encourage you to get to church this Easter. Even if you haven’t been in a long time, just go. It can be a great turning point in your life. And if you are going to church, invite someone else to go with you. You never know who will say “Yes” just like I did and how many lives their life can impact. Happy Resurrection Day!

Human Trafficking is Big Business Anne Childers, Staff Writer
Human trafficking may well be the biggest industry you have never heard of. Forced labor and human trafficking is a$150B industry globally with 20.9M victims worldwide, according to figures supplied by the International Labor Organization. Victims of human trafficking include children, women, and men who are subjected to sexual exploitation or forced labor through force, fraud, or coercion. The U.S. Department of Justice human trafficking task force reports 83% of sex trafficking victims identified in the United States are U.S. citizens with an average age of 12-14. Florida continues to rank third in the nation in the number of calls to the National Human Trafficking Hotline. Those calls signal an increased local awareness largely because of state level action. Attorney General Pam Bondi has worked with Florida’s legislative leaders to create a 15-member Statewide Council on Human Trafficking. The Council, chaired by Bondi, was created and signed into law in 2014. It is comprised of law enforcement officers, prosecutors, legislators, and experts in the fields of health, education, and social services. Attorney General Bondi is committed to an all-hands-on-deck approach to eradicating human trafficking. You can be part of the
solution for victims of modern-day slavery by raising your own awareness, and alerting authorities to suspicious activities. Signs of human trafficking can include but are not limited to: • Poor mental health or abnormal behavior • Poor physical health • Lack of control • Few or no personal possessions • Is not in control of his/her own money • Is not in control of his/her own identification documents (ID or passport) • Is not allowed or able to speak for themselves (a third party may insist on being present and/or translating) If you think you have come into contact with a victim of human trafficking, do not become involved personally, but do call one of the professional services trained to recognize and rescue victims. Report your suspicions anonymously to local law enforcement, the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 1-888-373-7888, the U.S. Department of Justice Hotline at 1-888-428-7581, the Florida Abuse Hotline at 1-800-96-ABUSE (22873), or 911. Tampa Bay is a lovely place to live, yet because claims are abundant in the state of Florida, auto insurance can be pricey. That being said, there are ways to bring your rates down. 1. Shop around. Car insurance rates can vary drastically among companies for the same levels of coverage. Independent agencies help you compare quotes from several insurers to make sure you’re getting the best deal. 2. Raise deductibles. The deductible is the amount that the insurance company doesn’t cover when paying for repairs. Raising the comprehensive and collision deductibles from $500 to $1,000 can save up to $200 a year. 3. Consider the vehicle. If your car is not in the greatest condition, it might be time to drop collision and comprehensive coverage. Collision pays to repair damage to your car if it crashes into another
vehicle/object or flips over. Comprehensive pays if your car is vandalized, stolen, damaged by storms or by hitting an animal. If your annual premium plus your deductible equals more than your car, then it’s time to drop comp and collision. Companies never pay out more than the car is worth. If you do remove the additional coverage, you’ll be able to save for repairs or even a new car. 4. Maintain good credit. Credit is a big factor used to calculate premiums. To improve your credit, focus on making all loan and credit card payments on time, keeping balances below credit limits and opening credit accounts only when necessary. 5. Drive safely Our final tip and possibly the most important is DRIVE SAFELY. Traffic violations and accidents can substantially drive up your premiums. Unsafe driving can also pose a threat to you, your vehicle, and others. This article is provided by ABC Insurance of Tampa, an independent agency where the client comes first. They have relationships with dozens of insurance companies, allowing you to get coverage at the best price for your needs. Your Net Worth at Retirement James H. Willis, III Founder and President The Willis Agency, Inc 813-948-9109 Jim@TheWillisAgency.com www.TheWillisAgency.com 1 Peter 5:7 How much is enough? It seems to be an impossible question, when in reality it’s much easier than we make it out to be. We all, no matter how much we make, want more and more! But, in 99% of the cases that’s just not reality. Therefore, people set themselves up for worry, stress, frustration, and fear as well as disappointment. What if reality was the true guiding light—could it be more pleasant? The phrase “when reality sets in” happens; it does not have to be disappointing. Use reality to be prepared. Ease and contentment are much happier places to be instead of greed and want all the time. Matthew 11:28-30, Philippians 4:11-12. As we go through life, we need to recognize several important facts in determining our net worth. 1) Every financial decision ultimately impacts our net worth, such as what we spend on our kids growing up, education, and of course what we spend on our grandkids. Oops, sorry! I got preachy there, didn’t I? Hey, my wife Candi and I have 10 grandkids. I know what I am talking about. 2) Our net worth is the one number that can be quantified and therefore it can be measured on a period to period basis. So you can and should keep track of it.
3) My net worth is the sum total of every financial decision I have ever made. You all know that I have traveled the world over several times and that certainly cost money. With that said, I understand the impact this plays on my finances and I keep my goals in balance. So yes, I could have more money for sure, but with certain goals I choose to use my funds for a bigger purpose, sharing and helping in all parts of the globe. 4) The question ”How much is enough?” can always be answered. Over the years it may change, but at least you’ll have a target and goal to reach. 5) Net worth is always and only a measure of God’s provision, and never a measure of success or failure or significant importance. Retirement is achievable and can be enjoyable while living inside your means; your true net worth. We certainly can’t forget adding in the value of family, friends, experiences, and our health. We have a lot to be thankful for. Caring for You and Yours, Jim If you need help to determine “How much is enough?” and needing answers to retirement, then give me a call. That’s what I do!
“I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” — Galations 2:20
A Little Boy’s Explanation of God
It was written by an 8-year-old named Danny Dutton, who lives in Chula Vista, CA. He wrote it for his third grade homework assignment to explain God. EXPLANATION OF GOD: “One of God’s main jobs is making people. He makes them to replace the ones that die, so there will be enough people to take care of things on Earth. He doesn’t make grownups, just babies, I think because they are smaller and easier to make. That way he doesn’t have to take up his valuable time teaching them to talk and walk. He can just leave that to mothers and fathers. God’s second most important job is listening to prayers. An awful lot of this goes on, since some people, like preachers and things, pray at times beside bedtime. God doesn’t have time to listen to the radio or TV because of this. Because he hears everything, there must be a terrible lot of noise in his ears, unless he has thought of a way to turn it off. God sees everything and hears everything and is everywhere which keeps Him pretty busy. So you shouldn’t go wasting his time by going over your mom and dad’s head asking for something they said you couldn’t have.
Atheists are people who don’t believe in God. I don’t think there are any in Chula Vista. At least there aren’t any who come to our church. Jesus is God’s Son. He used to do all the hard work, like walking on water and performing miracles and trying to teach the people who didn’t want to learn about God. They finally got tired of him preaching to them and they crucified him. But he was good and kind, like his father, and he told his father that they didn’t know what they were doing and to forgive them and God said okay. His dad (God) appreciated everything that he had done and all his hard work on earth so he told him he didn’t have to go out on the road anymore. He could stay in heaven. So he did. And now he helps his dad out by listening to prayers and seeing things which are important for God to take care of and which ones he can take care of himself without having to bother God. Like a secretary, only more important. You can pray anytime you want and they are sure to help you because they got it worked out so one of them is on duty all the time. You should always go to church on Sunday because it makes God happy, and if there’s anybody you want to make happy, it’s God! Don’t skip church to do something you think will be more fun like going to the beach. This is wrong. And besides, the sun doesn’t come out at the beach until noon, anyway. If you don’t believe in God, besides being an atheist, you will be very lonely, because your parents can’t go everywhere with you, like to camp, but God can. It is good to know He’s around you when you’re scared, in the dark or when you can’t swim and you get thrown into real deep water by big kids. But you shouldn’t just always think of what God can do for you. I figure God put me here and he can take me back any time he pleases. And that’s why I believe in God.”

What Lies Ahead? Dr. Dan Coflin Pastor, River of Life Church The Depression era gave way to the Great Generation followed by the Baby Boomers, Generations X, Y, and now Z. We have run out of alphabet letters to describe the characteristics of those born in various generations. So, are we at the end? Is the end near? What is the end? During my lifetime I have witnessed in nearly every decade, those with “absolute proof ” that the end of world has come or at least is right around the corner. Several decades ago we were entering another ice age where few, if any would survive. Then “they” (the rarely identified experts) determined that the polar caps were melting and the whole planet had entered a heat wave with cataclysmic consequences. Some have forecast the soon arrival of meteorites or asteroids or some football stadium size rock that will wipe out all life on the planet. And if the dangers of the universe were not enough then the work of terrorist or corrupt politicians would certainly be our demise. Such projections have caused many to feel like there is no hope and the future is bleak. Dismay and despair have captured the hearts of many. There is hope. Hope is a joyful and confident expectation of good. Hope is found in God who is called the “God of hope” (Rm. 15:13). This verse continues, saying, “The God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing that you may abound in hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.” If you are filled with hope, then joy and peace will characterize your life. His promise to us is predicated on our believing and then receiving what he said is true. We are told not to “be anxious about anything”
but instead “to pray” and then be “thankful” knowing God has heard us and then his promise to bring peace into our hearts will be fulfilled (Phl. 4:6,7). Jesus tells us to “not let our heart be troubled” (Jn. 14:1) or “to be afraid” (Jn. 14:27). Fear of the future is not to define us. Let me quickly describe what God has said about your future. Jesus sent his disciples (all who believe in him) to carry the gospel (good news) to every nation, people, tribe, and language and tell them their sins are forgiven and eternal life is free for all who will receive it. The Bible also describes a time when the kings of the earth will come and seek the Lord wanting to know him. The sincerity of their faith is seen when they transform their weapons of war into implements of harvest (Is. 2:2-4). It will come to pass that the knowledge of the glory of God will cover all the earth even as the waters cover the sea (Hab. 2:14). When will these things come to pass? Jesus is retained in heaven until everything the prophets have prophesied has been fulfilled (Ats. 3:21). So when the news is bad and doom and gloom are the headlines of the day, it is time for us to turn our attention to the Word of God. You are not destined to destruction, but to greatness. You are to walk in the victory Jesus finished on the cross and demonstrated at the empty tomb. Dr. Dan Coflin and his wife Dianne are copastors of River of Life Church in Lutz, FL. 410 Chapman Rd. An Act of Kindness—The Good Samaritan Jesus answered, “A certain man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who both stripped him and beat him, and departed, leaving him half dead. By chance a certain priest was going down that way. When he saw him, he passed by on the other side. In the same way a Levite also, when he came to the place, and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a certain Samaritan, as he travelled, came where he was. When he saw him, he was moved with compassion, came to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. He set him on his own animal, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. On the next day, when he departed, he took out two denarii, and gave them to the host, and said to him, ‘Take care of him. Whatever you spend beyond that, I will repay you when I return.’ Now which of these three do you think seemed to be a neighbor to him who fell among the robbers?” He said, “He who showed mercy on him.” Then Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.” —Luke 10:30–37, World English Bible

Giving Easter a Second Look Continued from Page 1
For many, the wonder of the resurrection is like that. The marvel of the matter is missed because the look is just a glancing one. No intent to peer in. No careful observation. And that’s exactly how it started for one of Jesus’ closest disciples. “Now on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. Then she ran and came to Simon Peter and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him.
Peter therefore went out, and the other disciple, and were going to the tomb. So they both ran together, and the other disciple outran Peter and came to the tomb first. And he, stooping down and looking in, saw the linen cloths lying there; yet he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb, and he saw the linen cloths lying there, and the handkerchief that had been around His head, not lying with the linen cloths but folded together in a place by itself. Then the other disciple, who came to the tomb first, went in also, and he saw and believed.” (John 20:1-8/parenthesis and underlines added) Three Kinds of “Looks” Into the Empty Tomb The Easter Glance John was younger and faster then Peter. He let us know he could outrun Peter in a foot race. But though he got to the tomb first, John didn’t actually enter. He only bent down and “looked” (Greek, blepo) in. This word implies a glance. A quick look. By giving the empty tomb only a blepo look, John missed a lot. By not being more
observant, he thought no further then what the women had said. Somebody’s taken him! The Easter Examination But when Peter arrived (panting like happens when you’re not in your 20’s anymore!) he did not stop at the opening, but went right in. When he did, he gave the area a kind of look that required a different word to be used (Greek, theoreo). His look is the look of careful observation and scrutiny, the look of the ornithologist to the trees in search of birds. The look of the biologist through a microscope to see his tissue samples. The look of the astronomer through his telescope to peer at the moons of Venus. Here’s what Peter saw that John didn’t. The garments were lying just as if he were still in them. His head cloth was rolled up in a manner that was like unto how it would have been on him, and separated from his body. Huh?! Who robs graves and leaves the clothes! And if, for some weird reason, they did, who would take the time to lay them out much as they were when wrapped about the deceased? Giving Easter a Second Look As John was outside waiting for Peter, something hit him. “Wait. Did I see...?” So he went in with Peter. This time, his look was far more intense, and a third Greek word for “see” is used–horao. It means “to take heed, to perceive.” When he did this, he believed! How carefully have you looked at this matter? Have you, like former atheist and investigative journalist for the Chicago Tribune Lee Strobel, done your homework? When he only gave a glance at the story of Easter, he couldn’t see the truth. But he went past blepo looks to theoreo and horao looks and believed! There’s an old adage—you see what you look at. Don’t see evidence for a risen Christ? One thing’s for sure, you aren’t looking closely enough! If you need a closer look, watch The Case for Christ by Lee Strobel at a theater near you this Easter season! Might not it be time in your life to give Easter a second look? By Mike Holm, Pastor of Calvary Chapel 17538 Livingston Ave., Lutz. You are invited to our services every Sunday at 10:15. Hope to see you soon! www.cctampa.org
Easter And What It Has To Do With A Bunny
Easter, a celebration of Jesus Christ’s resurrection from the dead, is the holiest day of the Christian calendar. According to the gospels of the New Testament, Jesus Christ and his apostles entered Jerusalem to observe Passover, the Jewish holy season that celebrates the Hebrews’ release from slavery. After the Passover supper, Jesus was arrested, and on what is now called Good Friday, he was crucified. Two days later, he rose from the dead. Those of Jewish origin were the first to celebrate the resurrection, likely as a new facet of the Passover festival. In fact, the Easter celebration was called “PASCHA.” It’s derived from the word “PESACH” (the Jewish translation for Passover). Originally, Easter was celebrated two days after Passover, so it fell on any day of the week,
but Easter Wednesday just didn’t feel right. In 325 AD, Roman Emperor Constantine and the Council of Nicaea ruled that Easter must fall only on a Sunday, the day when Christ rose from the dead. Easter Sunday would be the first Sunday following the full moon after the spring equinox; it could occur anywhere between March 22nd and April 25th. Around the same time, Christians began one of the first recorded rituals of the modern Easter celebration—the lighting of the Paschal candle. Its flame is a reminder of Christ’s resurrection—light out of darkness. As Christianity spread throughout Europe, different pagan customs blended into the holidays. In fact, the actual word “Easter” may have come from “Ēostre,” the Goddess of spring and fertility, which brings us to the Easter egg. Eggs have been a mythological symbol of birth for thousands of years. Christians ad-

opted the egg as an Easter custom sometime around the 13th century. The yolk inside a shell represented Christ emerging from the tomb. Eggs were painted red, representing the blood Christ shed from the cross.
The colorful Easter egg soon hatched its own traditions. A popular one was egg rolling. In 1876, Congress prohibited kids from playing on the Capitol grounds, so President Rutherford B. Hayes opened the White House lawn to the little rollers. Thereafter, the White House Easter Egg Roll became a tradition. So, when did that Easter Bunny hop onto the scene? The fertile rabbit has long been a symbol of new life in European pagan celebrations. Beginning around the 16th century, parents told children that if they behaved, on the eve of Easter, the Osterhase (the name given in Germany to the Easter Bunny) would come and lay colorful eggs, so the children built nests in their homes to entice the rabbit to visit. Thus began the custom of the Easter egg hunt and the Easter basket. To help fill out those baskets, 19th century European chocolatiers began making egg-shaped chocolates, and the sweet trend spread throughout the world. Today, billions of dollars are spent each year on Easter candy. Easter is a joyful day when Christians celebrate Jesus Christ’s resurrection. It witnesses the immense power of God Himself
and the belief that God exists. Only He who created life can resurrect it after death 1st Corinthians 15:54-55 “He can remove the sting that is death and the victory that is the grave.” In Jesus resurrecting from the grave, God reminds us of His absolute sovereignty over life and death. Jesus is the testimony to the resurrection of human beings, which is the principle on which the Christian faith is based. Unlike all other religions, Christianity alone possesses a founder who transcends death and who promises that His followers will do the same. All the other religions were founded by men and prophets whose end was the grave. As Christians, we take comfort in the fact that our God became a man who died for our sins and was resurrected on the third day from a grave that could not hold him. Today, He lives and sits at the right hand of God.
For 2000 years, new customs have been added, some spiritual and some fun. But Easter is also the time for families to gather and to welcome spring, when new life emerges after the dead of winter. The Florida Orchestra Celebrates 50 Years The Florida Orchestra celebrates its milestone 50th season with a blockbuster lineup of concerts ranging from Carmina Burana to the Music of Star Trek & Star Wars under the leadership of Music Director Michael Francis. The 2017-18 season debuts in October and reflects TFO’s deep roots in Tampa Bay while underscoring its bold future, with the debut of two weekend matinee series at the Mahaffey Theater, the world premiere of a major work commissioned by the orchestra, and expansion of its popular Coffee series at Ruth Eckerd Hall. “The Florida Orchestra is a jewel in the crown of Tampa Bay,” said Maestro Michael Francis, who has signed on to lead TFO through the 2020-21 season. “Our 50th anniversary is a chance for us to celebrate our rich and successful past by performing favorite masterpieces from throughout the years. We will also look to our future with vibrant new works, including a very special anniversary commission by exciting young composer
Michael Ippolito, who will capture the spirit of Florida to honor The Florida Orchestra. At the heart of our past and future is the extraordinary talent of The Florida Orchestra musicians, whom we will showcase in a variety of ways all season long.” “Outside the concert halls, we will continue to grow our community programs, which have been so warmly received by everyone. We want to touch even more people this season through the power of music.” Francis leads his third season brimming with special moments to celebrate the orchestra’s 50th anniversary of bridging the bay with music, which fittingly started more than five decades ago with an agreement signed on a boat in the middle of Tampa Bay in a merger of the Tampa Philharmonic and the St. Petersburg Symphony. The Florida Orchestra still is the only performing arts organization that unites the bay area, with performances in Tampa, St. Petersburg, and Clearwater.
