Should Christians Vote? This topic has the potential to be divisive when you’re talking about religion, and when you add a political overtone sometimes it has the potential for fireworks. Rather than turning this into a debate of opinion about who is right and who is wrong, let’s see what the Bible has to say about voting. Psalm 146:3: “Do not put your trust in princes, human beings who cannot save.” The Bible says that there is no supreme answer to the woes of the world. But how do we as Christians relate to what is about to unfold in 2018 in an intense and inflammatory political season? Should we run in the other direction? After all, we’re citizens of another kingdom, and others think we should use our influence for good and have every church become a polling station.

This is not about any party or person, it’s about principles and attitudes. The Bible says we are primarily citizens of another kingdom. John 18:36: Jesus said, “My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders. But for now, my kingdom is from another place.” This is letting us know that Jesus will someday reign supreme in this world. But right now there’s a contest between two principal leaders, Jesus and the Devil, with a lot of people in between. Luke 17:20: Jesus replied, “The coming of the kingdom of God is not something that can be observed, nor will people say, ‘Here it is,’ or ‘There it is,’ because the kingdom of God is within you.” Continued on Page 8

What a Beautiful Legacy! Abby Sayler never liked to be the center of attention even though she ran an incredibly successful enterprise in Carrollwood for 21 years. Her passion has always been May 17, 1942-August 24, 2018 sharing and teachAbby’s Health & Nutrition ing the miraculous creation of the human body and how we live and function largely as a result of nutrition and supplementation. To say that she has helped and affected thousands of lives is an understatement. Our employees relate stories they’ve heard over the years that always amaze us and generally they are unsolicited coming from our regular customers. Many of you have been wonderful to ask about her over the last few months and wanting to extend your well wishes for her recovery. True to who she was, Abby has always been a very private person and chose to spend her last days with her loved ones and wanted no fuss made over her condition. With her staff, customers, and community in mind, over the last five years we have worked together to ensure a seamless transition, with
this eventuality in mind. She never wanted her legacy of health to end with her passing, so Abby’s will continue to be the leader in “Better Health Through Education.” Four years ago, with her legacy in mind, she donated property in Lutz to be used as a community farm in perpetuity, where families can grow their own organic food and learn to live a more sustainable lifestyle. Thank you for your kind sentiments for our wonderful Abby and thank you for your continued patronage of her legacy of health. She was an educator, a visionary, someone that always put others before herself. Throughout her career she helped many people overcome all kinds of health challenges and find hope. God introduced me to her in 1997 and for the last 21 years, I have had the privilege to work alongside her and learn from one of the most brilliant minds when it came to how the body works. She was my mentor, my friend, and my business partner and I thank God for her every day. Although she will not be with us here on Earth, she is no longer suffering and surrounded by love. Her vision and legacy will live on from generation to generation. I love you, Abby. You will be greatly missed. Thank you for your unselfish contribution to our community. — Victor Karydis
The Problems With Collisions Dr. Dan Coflin Pastor, River of Life Church Have you ever been involved in an auto accident? Most of us have and the results are always unpleasant. First there is the trauma of bodily injury that may disable us, at least for a season, to one degree or another. If we are fortunate enough to survive the crash without injury we still have to deal with the auto repair, the insurance coverage, car rental, towing and garage issues. Accidents can create a whole host of problems that consume our time and money. While auto accidents were not a part of the Apostle Paul’s world or the church at Philippi to whom he wrote, Paul still warns of the problems caused by collisions. In Philippians 2:2 he writes, “I beseech Euodias and beseech Syntyche that they be of the same mind in the Lord.” The Greek word Paul uses here translated “beseech” carries the idea of begging, exhorting, entreating, or to try to appease by entreaty. In other words Paul was trying to get these women to come together and “be of the same mind.” Apparently, there was a strong disagreement between them and Paul knew the damage it could cause in the church. Even the names of these women reveal the contention between them. Euodias means, “fine traveling” and Syntyche means “an accident”. When these two got together there was a collision that brought about trouble in the church. Have you ever been traveling along and all is well until, suddenly someone brings strife and trouble into your home, business, workplace, or even ministry that upsets everyone involved? Your focus and energy is now expended on trying to restore peace and heal the breach instead of accomplishing the business at hand. Fortu-
nately, we have instructions in the scriptures of how to handle just such a situation. First of all we need to recognize where strife comes from. The Bible is not vague on this subject, “only by pride comes contention” (Pr. 13:10). Someone said, “pride makes excuses, but humility makes adjustments.” (unknown) We must take responsibility for our part in a contentious situation. Usually, people get their feelings hurt and become offended because of what someone else said or how their actions were perceived. We can choose to forgive those who offended us and humble ourselves before God. Our goal should always be to restore the relationship instead of defend ourselves. When we choose to walk in humility we receive the grace of God (His power, help and favor) for God, “resist the proud, but gives grace to the humble” (Jms. 4:6). Secondly, we should know that the person who brought the hurtful words or actions is hurting himself or herself. Most people are not trying to be difficult, but are reacting out of their own past hurts and hardships. They are filled with fear and lash out to protect themselves not wanting to be hurt again. The devil is real and his wicked plots are to divide and destroy, but we overcome him with the truth of God’s word and putting into practice his commands, “Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamor, and evil speaking, be put away from you with all malice: and be kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake has forgiven you” (Eph. 4:31-32). We may not be able to avoid all quarreling and disagreements, but if we know that the end result of strife is, “confusion and every evil work” (Jms. 3:16) we might be more likely to follow Paul’s admonition, which says, “as much as lives in you, live peaceably with all men” (Rm. 12:18).
We may collect some dents and dings in our fenders and have our paint scratched on occasion, but by walking humbly and in the love of God we can avoid painful and expensive collisions as we enjoy the journey on the road of life. Wisdom, Part 1
Keith Chandler, Journey Christian Church I thought it might be wise with all that is going on in our country to spend some time in Proverbs looking at some of the wisdom Solomon has for us. The Bible called Solomon the wisest man who ever lived. I think we could all use more wisdom trying to navigate our way through the pressures of work, family, finances, career, and relationships. The Bible has a word to describe the person who navigates life well. That word is “wise.” I want to take some time and talk about this much needed virtue. A person can be knowledgeable without being wise. It’s not the goal of the Bible to teach us information so we can simply grow in knowledge. The Bible was given to us for our application. When we apply Biblical truth into our lives, we experience a transformation in our lives. Before we begin, there’s some background you need to know. The book of Proverbs was written around 900 B.C. yet it’s filled with wisdom for our lives today. The author is primarily Solomon. Every proverb has three distinct and vital components to it: 1. Every proverb is a timeless truth, not temporary advice. This is something that is ongoing. It’s not a quick fix. It’s something that will continue to carry you through. Let me demonstrate how easy it is for you to remember proverbs. I’m going to start and you finish it for me. Look before you… A penny saved… The apple doesn’t fall far… Can’t teach an old dog… Proverbs, whether Biblical or secular, help us for the long haul. Proverbs 22:7 “The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is slave to the lender.” What a timeless truth written 3,000 years ago and yet just as appropriate to us today. What if we really believed what Solomon writes? What if we actually put it into practice? Would there be fewer arguments in our home, and less stress in our life? Would generosity come more naturally? 2. It’s a general principle, not an uncondi-
tional promise. Proverbs 22:6 “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” KJV Nine out of ten times that’s what will happen, but the fact that occasionally there’s an exception shows us that it is not a promise from God, it’s a principle from God. The reason it becomes a principle is man’s free will is thrown into the mix (the person might choose to go a totally different direction than the way their parents raised them). 3. It’s specific information that has a broad application. These principles can be taught in business settings, in budgeting sessions, in high school classrooms. Their applications stretch beyond a church setting. Each of these proverbs are morally and ethically sound. When we study these principles, they give us a glimpse of God’s character and what’s important to him. Solomon’s words are needed today. I think it’s important that we understand how Solomon became the wisest. Israel was at its highest point of peace and economic prosperity. The Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream and said to him, “Ask for whatever you want and I will give it to you.” Read 1 Kings 3. Solomon asks for wisdom, for a discerning heart. The Lord is pleased with Solomon’s request. God says, “I will give you a wise and discerning heart. But because you didn’t ask for some other things,” he said, “I’m also going to give you those things too.” He gives him a bonus because he’s so pleased with his request. And Solomon shows his wisdom in how he governs Israel. Solomon says the foolish person despises wisdom and instruction. A lot of us do foolish things. How many of us spend about as much as you earn, occasionally hurt someone we love, and are full of pride and slow to ask for help? If you do any of those things, the Bible says you’re foolish. Don’t be a fool—get wisdom. Scripture says: 1. Fools act before they think. Proverbs 13:16: “Wise people think before
they act. Fools don’t—and they even brag about their foolishness.” 2. Fools spend all they earn. Proverbs 21:20 “In the house of the wise are stores of choice food and oil, but the foolish man devours all he has.” He eats it all, he spends it all. “But everybody else does it!” Well, everybody else is foolish. 3. Fools hurt those they love. Proverbs 14:1 “The wise woman builds her house, but with her own hands the foolish one tears it down.” She belittles them, she nags, she controls. What does he do? He’s domineering and angry. The foolish one tears and hurts those they love.
4. Fools think they know it all. Proverbs 12:15 “Fools think their own way is right, but the wise listen to others.” Scripture says, “How much better to get wisdom than gold, to choose understanding rather than silver!” Wisdom is better than the most valuable thing you can get in this world. Proverbs will teach us to hunger for it. Until next month, Keith 7708 Van Dyke Rd, Odessa 813-920-0442 Services Sunday at 10:00 www.tampajourney.com
The Great Florida Outdoors Dr. Robert Norman, Clinical Professor, Dermatology, Nova Southeastern University What is this called? The Tampa butterfly orchid is native to Florida and the Bahamas. It is an epiphyte most commonly found growing on southern live oak. Other homes include cypress, pond apples, mangroves, pines, and palms in tropical hardwood hammocks and along rivers. It has dark green 7 cm pseudobulbs with narrow foliage up to 16 cm in length and 2 cm in width with flowers that are alternate, 2.5 cm in diameter, and fragrant. The mature plants produce a branched inflorescence in summer containing several flowers with green to bronze sepals and petals surrounding a white lip with a purple dot. Encyclia is from the Greek - enkykleoma “to encircle” and tampensis - “Tampa”, first described by John Torrey in 1846. The name “butterfly” orchid was given because of how they sometimes appear in a breeze. Remember to look up when exploring the Florida landscape! What causes the color change on the high water mark? “Lichens as Indicators of Hydrology Lichens have long provided a means to date historical, naturally-occurring events because they are longlived, have a relatively slow radial growth rate, and have different species-specific tolerances to inundation (Benedict 2009). In forested wetland systems, elevations of past water levels can be inferred by ‘reading’ the history of lichen lines on tree boles. An understanding of the relationship between lichen lines and recurring water elevations is particularly important at sites for which there are either no hydrodata, or no hydrodata exist for the time period of interest.
At one such site, in one of the few studies of lichen lines ever published in central Florida, Hale (1984) observed a corticolous (i.e. ‘on bark’) lichen line ‘move’ up a bald cypress (Taxodium distichum) tree bole over time. The apparent upward migration of the lichen line was in response to consecutively higher flooding events along the Peace River in Polk County, Florida. Hale’s study was the first published work in Florida that associated sustained, elevated water levels with chlorosis, exfoliation, and disintegration of lichens on trees. He found that in order to form a lichen line, water must remain at an elevated level for at least seven days to sufficiently kill lichen thalli below that level. (Tim Hull “Using Lichens as Indicators of Hydrology in Mixed Pond-Cypress (Taxodium ascendens) - Pine (Pinus sp.) Wetlands in Central Florida” Lichen is sensitive to water and chemical changes and is an indicator of pollution. What is this fascinating tree? This is sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua). It can grow up to 148 ft. The leaves of the Sweetgum is hand shaped, lobed with typically five leaf tips with serrated leaf margins. The fruits are spiky capsule fruits that contain up to 40 capsules and in autumn the whole ground under the tree is often covered with seeds. The branches are light brown and often corky and the bark (Sweet-Gum is also called Alligator-Wood) is strong furrowed and light brown. The Sweetgum’s resinous sap running from the wounded bark was previously used in chewing gum production. Get out and explore the Great Florida Outdoors! Dr. Norman is an advanced master naturalist graduate of the FMNP program from UF and a board-certified dermatologist based in Tampa and Riverview. He can be reached at 813-880-7546.

Kate’s Story
Samantha Taylor Samantha Taylor Fitness One of the things I love about my career is I get to see the extreme difference in a woman’s life, who she is before she met me and after she does our program. It truly is amazing! Let me tell you about Kate, for this is such an amazing story of how a woman’s life is impacted. When I first met Kate, she was pretty grumpy because she had lost hope. She was 64, had lost and gained back 60 lbs. three times, hadn’t worked out in 40 years, and had just given up. As I told her about our programs and the results she could get, she was so beaten down by her past failures that it was hard for her to believe she could do it. After we talked about the options, she looked at me with a stern look and said, “I don’t know if this is going to work but I am going to give it a try because you sure seem confident that you can help me.” I still smile when I think of that day because of who she is now, compared to who she was, it is quite miraculous and I am so proud of her! About 6 months after she joined, she ran up to me beaming from ear to ear and practically tackled me, hugging me so hard she almost cracked me half! She said, “I just have to tell you how much you have changed my life!” She could not stop smiling! She grabbed my arm and as tears started to swell up in her eyes she exclaimed, “I just have to thank you, you have given me my life back!” “I have lost 41 lbs. and 5 sizes! I have SO much energy, I don’t even know what to do with it and I love to exercise now after 40 years of not doing it! Thank you!!!” She stood to the side and opened her jacket she said, “Look how flat my stomach is now! I used to look pregnant!” I exclaimed my absolute excitement for
her as she gave me another huge hug. The great thing is, she has now lost 60 lbs. and has kept it off for over a year. She sent me a picture of herself on her 66th birthday zip lining, mountain climbing, and horseback riding and she said, “Is this what 66 year olds do on their birthday?!” I said, “Fit ones do!” She said it was the best vacation she has ever had in her life! Now THAT is why I do what I do because I love to see women’s lives impacted. She was so transformed I asked her to be a guest on our TV show we have on ABC. On the show she said, “My husband says he has wife back now and that I am the happy, energetic woman he fell in love with and he is so glad to see me happy again. I can’t even tell you what this program has meant to my life. I feel and look 20 years younger and I know I will keep it off this time and that feels wonderful.“ The difference between her previous situation and her having an amazing transformation was that she took action. That is the key for many of you reading this article. If you really want to get results you need to take action and do something different then you have been doing. A good place to start is to do what Kate did, set up a FREE Body Transformation Analysis to see how we can help you. We have 5 locations, newest one in Palm Harbor. An Act of Kindness:: The Good Samaritan Jesus answered, “A certain man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who both stripped him and beat him, and departed, leaving him half dead. By chance a certain priest was going down that way. When he saw him, he passed by on the other side. In the same way a Levite also, when he came to the place, and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a certain Samaritan, as he travelled, came where he was. When he saw him, he was moved with compassion, came to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. He set him on his own animal, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. On the next day, when he departed, he took out two denarii, and gave them to the host, and said to him, ‘Take care of him. Whatever you spend beyond that, I will repay you when I return.’ Now which of these three do you think seemed to be a neighbor to him who fell among the robbers?” He said, “He who showed mercy on him.” Then Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.” — Luke 10:30–37, World English Bible

44th Annual International Folk Fair Uniting the country with food & performances from 36 cultural groups at St Petersburg’s Vinoy Park. A 44-year tradition has been revitalized. In an immigrant nation facing an identity crisis, we have a new purpose. This year, the St. Petersburg International Folk Fair Society (SPIFFS) Annual Folk Fair reminds us who we are: a fabric of cultures woven into a United States. SPIFFS 44th Annual International Folk Fair will be held from October 25 - 28, 2018 at Vinoy Park in downtown St. Petersburg, FL. The 4-day festival showcases food and culture from 36+ member organizations, each representing immigrants from nations across the globe. The groups will unite in a Grand Parade of Nations, culminating in a swearingin ceremony of new American citizens. OCT 27 & 28 - PUBLIC FESTIVAL: Doors open to the public for a weekend of festivities featuring food and performances from three dozen cultures. Tickets are available at www.spiffsFolkFair.org or at the door. For advertising, sponsorship, and vendor information, please contact us at folkfair@ ij.net or 727-804-3492.
SPIFFS International Folk Fair transforms St. Petersburg’s waterfront into a microcosm of the world, with a multitude of ethnic crafts, arts, food, cooking demonstrations and special entertainment. Some highlights include Giving Tree Music drum circles; student performances on the main stage; Polynesian dancers; and music featuring the Mongolian “Horse Head Violin” (Morin Khuur). Additional entertainment in the Main Stage/Beer Garden area includes performances by Urban Gypsies, Brazilian Samba by O Som Do Jazz, New Horizon Band of Gulfport, Irish Lift Band and The Islanders Greek Band. Folk dancing and music will be performed throughout the festival on two stages. Over centuries, people across the globe chose America to become their home. SPIFFS invites Tampa Bay to experience the raw tastes, sounds and experiences that have blended together to create American society. Help support this experience by sponsoring a school group, purchasing an ad, or reserving a vendor booth. www.spiffsFolkFair.org

Should Christians Vote? With that said, is there anything wrong with feeling some emotions of patriotism? How did Jesus feel when He prayed, “Oh, Jerusalem, Jerusalem how often?” The concept of voting and choosing leaders is actually Biblical. Deuteronomy 1:13: Moses said, “Choose wise, understanding, and knowledgeable men from among your tribes, and I will make them head over you.” Trying to find a replacement for Judas, the two cast lots. Acts 1:23-26: “So they nominated two men: Joseph called Barsabbas (also known as Justus) and Matthias. Then they prayed, ‘Lord, you know everyone’s heart. Show us which of these two you have chosen to take over this apostolic ministry, which Judas left to go where he belongs.’ Then they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias, so he was added to the eleven apostles.” Acts 6:3: “Therefore brethren, seek out from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, which we may appoint over this business.” It may not be clear on how they came up with the seven deacons for nominees, but they came up with seven names. One of the seven was Nicholas of Antioch, a convert who later went bad, whom you can read in Revelation about the doctrine of the Nicolaitans. Nicholas started out good, full of the Holy Spirit, but when he when bad the disciples decided, “We’re not going to vote for anyone ever again because they could go bad.” This may have not been clear thinking on their part because, after all, who made Lucifer? Was he a good angel? But going bad was his responsibility. Though the people said, “Give us a king.” The people didn’t pick Saul. God picked Saul and then filled him with the Holy Spirit, and for a while, he was a good king. But then pride went to him and he went bad, so did God make a mistake? God picked Saul because of his free will to do good, so He entrusted him and filled him with the Holy Spirit until pride crept into his heart. The point is, God does not pick bad behavior people unless you’re born again. A good example of this is in the New Testament. Saul of Tarsus had been converted along the Damas-

Paul said in 1 Corinthians 3:3-4: “For you are still carnal. For where there are envy, strife, and division among you, are you not carnal and behaving like mere men?” As Christians, we shouldn’t be doing any of that in the house of the Lord, for judgment does not fall upon you, only God. But there are biblical principles and issues that Christians should support and demonstrate. We are to respect his cities and political systems and our There’s a story in 2 Kings 20-1-10 in the Bination established by God. Good or bad, this is how we get leaders. when the Babylonians will come to take your sons and make them eunuchs in the palace of Babylon.” As in Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. “Everything you showed them is going to be carried off. Hezekiah said, “Good in this is the work of the Lord. At least there will be peace in my day.” He may as well said, “You know, I don’t care about what the government does with the environment, as long as I still have resources in my day.” Nevertheless, who we will be electing will have consequences for generations to come. The reason you are free now is that many lives were shed in World War l and World War II, and because of America, more and more countries have had a democratic representation and the privilege to vote. Some people think by not voting, they won’t be linked to what happens or what these people do in office. But, you might be linked by not voting anyway because this too will influence the outcome. Actually, not voting is a form of voting. So when policies and leadership are being chosen, we ought to pray for wisdom to make intelligent choices for the proclamation of the gospel. Jesus said, “Occupy until I come.” Luke 11:23. “He who is not with me is against me, and he who does not gather with me scatters.” So as Christians, you may have to get involved, for we live in a country where rich, poor, no matter who you are, you have the privilege of that one vote. 1 Timothy 2:1-2 tells us that we should care about who our leaders are, so we might have a quiet and peaceable life. Edmond Burke said, “All that is required for evil to prevail is for good men to do nothing.” Romans 6:23: If the wages of sin is death, then why we are not dead yet? Because Jesus gave Himself up and bought us some time to be His disciples and work for him and to do what Jesus would do. Chris Tillman As a longtime advertiser in Dunndeal Publications, I just wanted to say thanks for your years of service. I’ve met so many great readers over the years, many who use our services year after year. Advertising in your publications is probably the sole reason my Palm Trimming business has succeeded over the years. It’s the only place I gladly pay for advertising year after year. Thanks Kay for all the great service over the years, and I’m looking forward to many more years of advertising with you!

When my personal training career started in this area over 17 years ago, Mark Dunn called me and asked if I wanted to be a part of it. I was new in business here but knew I had to get my name out there, so this was the first media outlet I had ever advertised in. As people started to hear about what I offered, through THIS paper, my name started to get out in the community, and in a few years I became the #1 producing personal trainer in the large gym I was in, out of 2,000 trainers! When it was time to go out on my own, God used THIS paper to give me the confidence that I could find clients outside of that gym. I knew I must, because I wanted to create an environment for women that didn’t want to be in a gym. That wanted a safe place they could work out and not feel judged. I also enjoy catering to Christian women who liked that our studio cared about that. Now we have trained over 6,000 people, have 17 trainers, won the Small Business of the Year Award by the Chamber, give free seminars to the community, and started a meal prep service delivered to your home. We opened our 5th location in Palm Harbor, and we just moved our Wesley Chapel location into a new building that we own. We also have Land O Lakes, Carrollwood, Westchase, and more to come! I thank God for bringing this paper into my life, and I am SO grateful, for they helped give me the original confidence that I could build this business, and look what its turned into and the amount of people we serve! The owners, Mark and Kay, are some the nicest, most genuine people you’ll ever meet and I appreciate how they honor Jesus Christ in this paper. It’s such a blessing to partner with them, and I’m happy to know that I am the longest advertiser in the last 17 years!
