The Origins of Christmas We’ve all heard the biblical origin of Christmas, but society had been celebrating life and birth in the dark days of winter for centuries before Jesus walked the earth. In the Norse country, the winter celebration was known as Yule. Around December 21st, the winter solstice, fathers and sons dragged an evergreen indoors as a reminder of life and sat logs on a fire as a promise of good fortune. Ancient Romans had their own

Lunch With Mark Dominik
How NOT to Gain 10 Pounds This Month
Article and photography by Jeffrey Neil Fox
I was fortunate to be invited as a guest to a Wounded Warriors luncheon by my longtime friend, A. Bronson Thayer, CEO of Bay Cities Bank. The luncheon was held in downtown Tampa high atop the First City Center skyscraper in the private University Club. The panoramic view of Tampa was awesome. I joked and told everyone that I was able to see my dock on the Weeki Wachee River 50 miles away from our vantage point overlooking the Tampa Bay region. Our keynote speaker was Mark Dominik, who is the General Manager of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. I met Mark back in 1995 when he started with the Buccaneers as an intern in the scouting department. I was publishing the Buccaneer Magazine at the time. Mark worked for many years in the scouting and player personnel department and was instrumental in recruiting the players that would give our Bucs the best
chance of winning. Mark moved up the ranks and was made the General Manager in 2009, replacing Bruce Allen. From the moment I met him, I was able to tell that he was being groomed to become a General Manager for an NFL football team. I liked that he stayed with the Buccaneers so I could follow his progress and decisions closely. Dominik and his staff spend millions of dollars on players in salaries and performance bonuses. Many times the salaries are guaranteed and the team has to continue to pay even if the players are no longer active on the team’s roster. I told Mark that I particularly like the Ring of Honor immortalizing players and coaches from yesteryear. Their legacy will live on forever with their name prominently displayed in Raymond James Stadium. Our Buccaneers now have two players in the prestigious Hall of Fame. Our beloved Lee Roy Selmon and the recently inducted Warren Sapp. Two players and a coach made the initial cut for next year’s class. Linebacker Derrick Brooks, safety John Lynch, and coach Tony Dungy. Jeffrey Neil Fox has covered the Tampa Bay Sports scene for over four decades. He is an expert at fan culture. Samantha Taylor Pure Health Studios I do love the holidays, but we all know along with them comes lots of savory foods that we don’t always have access to, hence our mind tends to justify eating them. The problem is, it’s not just one meal, it’s a lot of different meals, parties, and pastries that people seem to always bring out during the holidays, especially in the workplace. I decided years ago that I was not going to let myself use the holidays as an excuse to gorge and plump out like a stuffed turkey. Personally, my biggest challenge is with sugar, and during the last three months of the year, there are temptations everywhere. Here are five tips to help you enjoy this month without expanding your waistline. That way you can get smaller-sized pants for Christmas instead of needing larger ones! 1) Know that you have a mind, will, and intellect that can decide not to partake in every little fancy food that makes its way across your path. Just because it’s there, doesn’t mean you have to eat it. A dog acts on impulse and just scarfs down whatever is there. You are not a dog. You can make wise decisions for the outcome you want and not just act on impulse. 2) Have balance. Enjoy some foods and for
some, say “Not today.” This can cut down on 50% of the calories you would normally consume at this time. 3) Make sure you exercise at least four times a week. With the extra holiday foods, if you exercise, you at least won’t gain. Of course if you have weight to lose, losing at least a few pounds this month is a better goal. However, it’s also a great accomplishment to not gain weight this month, either. 4) Fill up first on protein, fat, veggies, and nuts before eating the starchy carbohydrate foods. That way, you will be fuller and can start to lose your appetite a little for those foods. This also helps balance your blood sugar more instead of eating carbs first, which spikes your insulin and leads you to to eat more calories overall. 5) Fill up on a glass of water or snack on some nuts or salad before you go to a party or dinner. That way, you aren’t starving when you get there. We tend to make worse choices when we’re starving. I’ve learned not to put myself in that position. I’m all about celebrating Christmas. I love it! I would like to invite you to the Christmas party we’re having on Saturday, December 14th. We will have lots of goodies and some delicious sweets with hardly any carbs in them. Wait until you try these things, especially my no-sugar chocolate peanut butter cups! Check out my website for more details and to RSVP, for we’re not only celebrating Christmas but also our new location. I’m moving my studio into a new building by Jan 1st on a lake in Land O’ Lakes. Check it out at www. purehealthstudios.com. Merry Christmas!

Hope Children’s Home Rescuing the Next Generation
Is Christmas a busy time of year for your family? It sure is for mine. But Christmas is a very exciting time for us. Obviously, the children are excited about receiving presents. They also look forward to celebrating with family and friends. But for me, Christmas is exciting because we get to have an impact on so many lives during this time of year. Many people are hurting. Some are wondering how they are going to provide Christmas for their families. Others may be mourning the loss of a loved one. Still others are just struggling with life in general. During Christmas, we get to reach out and touch more lives through our songs and testimonies and hopefully, make a little difference in someone’s life. But I’d like to share a solution that I found many years ago, a permanent solution to the trials of life. This solution is the reason we celebrate Christmas in the first place. The solution is Jesus Christ. God came to earth in the form of an infant in the person of Jesus. He was born of a virgin in a manger in Bethlehem, Israel. He walked this earth for thirty-three years, teaching, healing, and establishing a way for man to regain fellowship with God. According to the Bible, all of us are sinners. God cannot be associated with sin. So when man sinned in the Garden of Eden, man broke fellowship with God. God then established a way for man to atone for his sin through the sacrifice of blood from an unblemished animal.
But man corrupted that practice as well. So God, in His desire to fellowship with man again, sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to die on the cross, to shed the perfect blood of the perfect Lamb of God, for all sins, even yours and mine. By accepting the blood sacrifice that Jesus made for you on the cross, you can have fellowship with God. It is called salvation. Salvation also guarantees your residency in heaven for eternity. But salvation is a gift. And just like at Christmas, if you don’t accept the gift, you don’t get it. Jesus is the reason for the season, but He is also the solution to many of the problems each of us face each day. Won’t you consider Christ and accept His free gift of salvation? All of our staff and many of the children have taken this step of faith in their lives. You may ask, “Why are the children in the situation they are in if God loves them so much?” Salvation doesn’t eliminate our problems. It helps us to cope with and conquer them. We still struggle with things. But we know we have a heavenly Father who will answer our prayers and help us through any situation. This principle helps many of our children to overcome the difficulties they’ve experienced in their lives. So, this Christmas season, please consider Christ. He wants to be the best Christmas present you’ve ever received. If you are looking to give a gift to a child, let me suggest a gift card to Walmart, Target, JC Penny’s or Sears. Come June, many of the children will have outgrown the clothes they get at Christmas and will need new ones. This would allow us to ensure those children are taken care of at Christmas. We can also use fast food gift cards (McDonald’s, Taco Bell, and Dairy Queen are some of their favorites). God bless you and may you have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

The answer: God gave himself in this gift. “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son.” He gave a piece of his heart. What would Christmas be like if we also made a gift of our hearts? Maybe you are angry with someone. Wouldn’t the gift of forgiveness help bring peace to the situation? Maybe there is, you know, someone who is alone and unhappy. Wouldn’t the gift of time and laughter bring joy? Maybe there is someone struggling with the circumstances of their life. Wouldn’t the offer of a helpful hand, a shoulder to lean on, and a supportive friend bring hope? And maybe, just maybe, there is someone in your life so different it causes you to keep your distance. Wouldn’t accepting them as they are, helping them to be what God desires them to be and not what we want them to be, be a gift of love that would change both your lives? Over two thousand years ago, God gave a piece of his heart. Now we have the same opportunity. It may not be the easiest gift to give, but it will be the most precious. May the joy, hope, peace, and love of the Christ Child be renewed in all our hearts this Holy Season. Merry Christmas.
It’s Christmas again. Decorations are going up. Houses, stores, and trees are glowing with multi-colored lights. Christmas carols fill the air. Once again, we find ourselves surfing the Internet, digging through ads, and running from store to store searching for the perfect gift while trying to stay within an overstretched budget. On that first Christmas night, the angels spoke of a different kind of gift. They conveyed a message of joy (“I bring you a message of great joy”), hope (“a Savior is born”), peace (“Peace on earth”), and love (“Goodwill to all mankind”). How was this possible? What material blessing was provided to cause so much joy? What new invention was going to produce such hope? What change in the economic and political climate would finally bring about peace? What amazing gift did Bruce Blagg God use to bring love to mankind? Pastor, LifeQuest It was a baby, a baby in a manger. Enjoying Everyday Life On The Way To Where I Am Going
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!” — 2 Corinthians 5:17
The Origins of Christmas Continued from Page 1
December festival. One week before the winter solstice, Romans began celebrating Saturnalia, a festival of food and drink in honor of Saturn, the god of agriculture. Some Romans, particularly soldiers and government officials, also worshiped Mithra, the sun god. It’s also believed that this set the birthday of Mithra as December 25th, the holiest day of the year. By the first century A.D., pagan traditions were being challenged as Christianity took hold throughout the empire. But Christ’s
birthday remains a mystery since the Bible doesn’t mention exactly when he was born. Since pagan Rome already celebrated Mithra on December 25th, it’s been theorized that the church adopted the date as the date of the birth of the Christ child. In the fourth century, the church made it official, declaring December 25th as the first day of the nativity. The church knew it could not outlaw the pagan traditions of Christmas, so it came to accept them. The evergreens traditionally brought indoors were decorated with apples symbolizing the Garden of Eden. These apples would eventually become Christmas ornaments. The story of Santa Claus also begins in the fourth century with the death of Nicholas, a beloved Turkish bishop. The anniversary of his death became known as St. Nicholas Day, and on December 6th good
children awoke and received gifts and bad children received nothing. In Holland, he was known as Sinterklaas. About 1,500 years later in America, a seminary professor named Clement Clark Moore re-imagined the legend of St. Nicholas and in 1822 wrote a poem called The Night Before Christmas about a goodnatured saint called Santa Claus who was pulled by group of reindeer and came down the chimney on Christmas Eve. Like
St. Nicholas, Santa Claus spread good cheer and gave gifts to children, and it was less clear what Santa Claus looked like. Then in 1863, Thomas Nast, a cartoonist for Harper’s Weekly, settled the matter with his version of the Christmas saint. Thomas Nast’s Santa was rotund and jolly with a full white beard and a sack full of toys, and an American icon was born. http://www.history.com/videos/historyof-christmas#european-christmas-customs

Veterans Dept. Donates to Liberty Manor On November 17th, the American Veterans Sons of Am. Vets Department State of Florida made a donation of a cargo trailer to Liberty Manor for Veterans at their Annual District Meeting at Am. Vets 4 in Tampa. The enclosed utility trailer is the first equipment to be donated for the purpose of implementing a Veterans Thrift Store. The thrift store is intended to assist Liberty Manor for Veterans to become selfsupporting and provide veterans with the means to become gainfully employed. Due to the extent of veterans’ injuries, the veterans have an excessive amount of medical appointments preventing them from procuring full-time gainful employment. Veterans Thrift Store will be able to work
around their medical appointments as well as providing veterans the means to become self-sufficient. This initiative is made possible as a result of American Veterans Sons of Am. Vets National, State, State Commander Ken Barber and Am. Vets 26 sons Commander Jeff Peck and David Lindsay.
